In a previous paper, the third author proved that finite-degree polynomial functors over infinite fields are topologically Noetherian. In this paper, we prove that the same holds for polynomial functors from free $R$-modules to finitely generated $R$-modules, for any commutative ring $R$ whose spectrum is Noetherian. As Erman-Sam-Snowden pointed out, when applying this with $R = \mathbb{Z}$ to direct sums of symmetric powers, one of their proofs of a conjecture by Stillman becomes characteristic-independent.
Our paper advertises and further develops the beautiful but not so well-known machinery of polynomial laws. In particular, to any finitely generated R-module M we associate a topological space, which we show is Noetherian when $\operatorname{Spec}(R)$ is; this is the degree-zero case of our result on polynomial functors.
Draisma recently proved that polynomial representations of $\mathbf{GL}_{\infty}$ are topologically noetherian. We generalize this result to algebraic representations of infinite rank classical groups.
We prove that any finite-degree polynomial functor is topologically Noetherian. This theorem is motivated by the recent resolution of Stillman's conjecture and a recent Noetherianity proof for the space of cubics. Via work by Erman-Sam-Snowden, our theorem implies Stillman's conjecture and indeed boundedness of a wider class of invariants of ideals in polynomial rings with a fixed number of generators of prescribed degrees.
A major open problem in the theory of twisted commutative algebras (tca's) is proving noetherianity of finitely generated tca's. For bounded tca's this is easy, in the unbounded case, noetherianity is only known for Sym(Sym^2(C^\infty)) and Sym(\wedge^2(C^\infty)). In this paper, we establish noetherianity for the skew-commutative versions of these two algebras, namely \wedge(Sym^2(C^\infty)) and \wedge(\wedge^2(C^\infty)). The result depends on work of Serganova on the representation theory of the infinite periplectic Lie superalgebra, and has found application in the work of Miller-Wilson on…
In recent years, researchers have discovered various large algebraic structures that have surprising finiteness properties, such as FI-modules and Delta-modules. In this paper, we add another example to the growing list: we show that certain degree two twisted commutative algebras are noetherian. This example appears to have some fundamental differences from previous examples, and is therefore especially interesting. Reflective of this, our proof introduces new methods for establishing noetherianity that are likely to be applicable in other situations. The algebras considered in this paper are…
Let $P_3(\mathbf{C}^{\infty})$ be the space of complex cubic polynomials in infinitely many variables. We show that this space is $\mathbf{GL}_{\infty}$-noetherian, meaning that any $\mathbf{GL}_{\infty}$-stable Zariski closed subset is cut out by finitely many orbits of equations. Our method relies on a careful analysis of an invariant of cubics introduced here called q-rank. This result is motivated by recent work in representation stability, especially the theory of twisted commutative algebras. It is also connected to certain stability problems in commutative algebra, such as Stillman's co…
Let $k$ be a perfect field of characteristic $p>0$, $k(t)_{per}$ the perfect closure of $k(t)$ and $A$ a $k$-algebra. We characterize whether the ring $A\otimes_k k(t)_{per}$ is noetherian or not. As a consequence, we prove that the ring $A\otimes_k k(t)_{per}$ is noetherian when $A$ is the ring of formal power series in $n$ indeterminates over $k$.
We consider a large class of monomial maps respecting an action of the infinite symmetric group, and prove that the toric ideals arising as their kernels are finitely generated up to symmetry. Our class includes many important examples where Noetherianity was recently proved or conjectured. In particular, our results imply Hillar-Sullivant's Independent Set Theorem and settle several finiteness conjectures due to Aschenbrenner, Martin del Campo, Hillar, and Sullivant. We introduce a matching monoid and show that its monoid ring is Noetherian up to symmetry. Our approach is then to factorize a …
Let $R$ be a commutative Noetherian ring. We introduce the notion of localization functors $λ^W$ with cosupports in arbitrary subsets $W$ of $\text{Spec}\, R$; it is a common generalization of localizations with respect to multiplicatively closed subsets and left derived functors of ideal-adic completion functors. We prove several results about the localization functors $λ^W$, including an explicit way to calculate $λ^W$ by the notion of Cech complexes. As an application, we can give a simpler proof of a classical theorem by Gruson and Raynaud, which states that the projective dimension of a f…
In this paper we develop a Grobner bases theory for ideals of partial difference polynomials with constant or non-constant coefficients. In particular, we introduce a criterion providing the finiteness of such bases when a difference ideal contains elements with suitable linear leading monomials. This can be explained in terms of Noetherianity of the corresponding quotient algebra. Among these Noetherian quotients we find finitely generated polynomial algebras where the action of suitable finite dimensional commutative algebras and in particular finite abelian groups is defined. We obtain ther…
This work studies conditions under which integral transforms induce exact functors on singularity categories between schemes that are proper over a Noetherian base scheme. A complete characterization for this behavior is provided, which extends earlier work of Ballard and Rizzardo. We leverage a description of the bounded derived category of coherent sheaves as finite cohomological functors on the category of perfect complexes, which is an application of Neeman's approximable triangulated categories, to reduce arguments to an affine local setting. Moreover, we study adjoints of such functors, …
Let R be a commutative Noetherian ring. We introduce the notion of colocalization functors with supports in arbitrary subsets of Spec R, which is a natural generalization of right derived functors of section functors with supports in specialization-closed subsets. We prove that the local duality theorem and the vanishing theorem of Grothendieck type hold for colocalization functors.
We introduce FI-algebras over a commutative ring $K$ and the category of FI-modules over an FI-algebra. Such a module may be considered as a family of invariant modules over compatible varying $K$-algebras. FI-modules over $K$ correspond to the well studied constant coefficient case where every algebra equals $K$. We show that a finitely generated FI-module over a noetherian polynomial FI-algebra is a noetherian module. This is established by introducing OI-modules. We prove that every submodule of a finitely generated free OI-module over a noetherian polynomial OI-algebra has a finite Gröbner…
Let $\k$ be a commutative ring, and let $(A,\mfrak{a})$ be an adic ring which is a $\k$-algebra. We study complete and torsion versions of the derived Hochschild homology and cohomology functors of $A$ over $\k$. To do this, we first establish weak proregularity of certain ideals in flat base changes of noetherian rings. Next, we develop a theory of DG-affine formal schemes, extending the Greenlees-May duality and the MGM equivalence to this setting. Finally, we define complete and torsion derived Hochschild homology and cohomology functors in this setting, and show that if $\k$ is noetherian …
Let $\mathfrak{a}$ be an ideal in a commutative ring $R$. For an $R$-module $M$, we consider the small $\mathfrak{a}$-torsion $Γ_{\mathfrak{a}}(M)=\{x\in M\mid\exists n\in\mathbb{N}:\mathfrak{a}^n\subseteq(0:_Rx)\}$ and the large $\mathfrak{a}$-torsion $\overlineΓ_{\mathfrak{a}}(M)=\{x\in M\mid\mathfrak{a}\subseteq\sqrt{(0:_Rx)}\}$. This gives rise to two functors $Γ_{\mathfrak{a}}$ and $\overlineΓ_{\mathfrak{a}}$ that coincide if $R$ is noetherian, but not in general. In this article, basic properties of as well as the relation between these two functors are studied, and several examples are …
Polynomial reduction is one of the main tools in computational algebra with innumerable applications in many areas, both pure and applied. Since many years both the theory and an efficient design of the related algorithm have been solidly established. This paper presents a general definition of polynomial reduction structure, studies its features and highlights the aspects needed in order to grant and to efficiently test the main properties (noetherianity, confluence, ideal membership). The most significant aspect of this analysis is a negative reappraisal of the role of the notion of term ord…
In this paper we study the commutativity of the Frobenius functor and the colon operation of two ideals for Noetherian rings of positive characteristic $p$. New characterizations of regular rings and local UFDs are given.
We investigate commutative Noetherian rings of prime characteristic such that the Frobenius functor applied to any injective module is again injective. We characterize the class of one-dimensional local rings with this property and show that it includes all one-dimensional F-pure rings.
Let $R$ be a commutative Noetherian ring, $\fa$ an ideal of $R$ and $M$ a finitely generated $R$--module. Let $t$ be a non-negative integer such that $\H^i_\fa(M)$ is $\fa$--cofinite for all $i<t$. It is well--known that $\Hom_R(R/\fa,\H^t_\fa(M))$ is finitely generated $R$--module. In this paper we study the finiteness of $\Ext^1_R(R/\fa,\H^t_\fa(M))$ and $\Ext^2_R(R/\fa,\H^t_\fa(M))$.
Using recent work by Erman-Sam-Snowden, we show that finitely generated ideals in the ring of bounded-degree formal power series in infinitely many variables have finitely generated Gröbner bases relative to the graded reverse lexicographic order. We then combine this result with the first author's work on topological Noetherianity of polynomial functors to give an algorithmic proof of the following statement: ideals in polynomial rings generated by a fixed number of homogeneous polynomials of fixed degrees only have a finite number of possible generic initial ideals, independently of the numb…
The purpose of this paper is to prove that certain limits of polynomial rings are themselves polynomial rings, and show how this observation can be used to deduce some interesting results in commutative algebra. In particular, we give two new proofs of Stillman's conjecture. The first is similar to that of Ananyan-Hochster, though more streamlined; in particular, it establishes the existence of small subalgebras. The second proof is completely different, and relies on a recent noetherianity result of Draisma.
The main theorem in this paper is that the base change functor from a noetherian abelian category to its noetherian polynomial category induces an isomorphism on K-theory. The main theorem implies the well-known fact that A^1-homotopy invariance of K'-theory for noetherian schemes.
Let $A$ be a Noetherian ring. For each $k$ where $0 \leq k \leq \dim A$ we construct left exact functors $D_k$ on $Mod(A)$. Let $D^i_k$ be the $i^{th}$-right derived functor of $D_k$. Let $M$ be a finitely generated $A$-module. Under mild conditions on $A$ and $M$ we prove that vanishing of some finitely many $D^i_k(M)$ is equivalent to $M$ satisfying $S_n$.
Let $R$ be a commutative Noetherian ring with non-zero identity, $\fa$ an ideal of $R$, and $X$ an $R$--module. In this paper, for fixed integers $s, t$ and a finite $\fa$--torsion $R$--module $N$, we first study the membership of $\Ext^{s+t}_{R}(N, X)$ and $\Ext^{s}_{R}(N, H^{t}_{\fa}(X))$ in Serre subcategories of the category of $R$--modules. Then we present some conditions which ensure the existence of an isomorphism between them. Finally, we introduce the concept of Serre cofiniteness as a generalization of cofiniteness and study this property for certain local cohomology modules.
Let $R$ be a commutative Noetherian ring and let $\G$ be the category of modules of G-dimension zero over $R$. We denote the associated stable category by $\pG$. We show that the functor category $\modpG$ is a Frobenius category and we argue how this property could characterize $\G$ as a subcategory of $\modR$.
A commutative ring is said to have ITI with respect to an ideal a if the a-torsion functor preserves injectivity of modules. Classes of rings with ITI or without ITI with respect to certain sets of ideals are identified. Behaviour of ITI under formation of rings of fractions, tensor products and idealisation is studied. Applications to local cohomology over non-noetherian rings are given.
For a commutative Noetherian ring $R$ of prime characteristic, denote by $^{f}R$ the ring $R$ with the left structure given by the Frobenius map. We develop Thomas Marley's work on the property of the Frobenius functor $\F(-) = - \otimes_R {^f}R$ and show the interplay between $\F$ and its dual $\widetilde{\F}(-) = \Hom_R({}^{f}R, -)$ which is introduced by Jürgen Herzog.
In the context of a well generated tensor triangulated category, Section 3 investigates the relationship between the Bousfield lattice of a quotient and quotients of the Bousfield lattice. In Section 4 we develop a general framework to study the Bousfield lattice of the derived category of a commutative or graded-commutative ring, using derived functors induced by extension of scalars. Section 5 applies this work to extend results of Dwyer and Palmieri [DP08] to new non-Noetherian rings.
Let R be a commutative local noetherian ring, and let L and L' be R-modules. We investigate the properties of the functors Tor_i^R(L,-) and Ext^i_R(L,-). For instance, we show the following: (a) if L is artinian and L' is noetherian, then Hom_R(L,L') has finite length; (b) if L and L' are artinian, then the tensor product L \otimes_R L' has finite length; (c) if L and L' are artinian, then Tor_i^R(L,L') is artinian, and Ext^i_R(L,L') is noetherian over the completion \hat R; and (d) if L is artinian and L' is Matlis reflexive, then Ext^i_R(L,L'), Ext^i_R(L',L), and Tor_i^R(L,L') are Matlis ref…
We consider the homotopy category of complexes of projective modules over a Noetherian ring. Truncation at degree zero induces a fully faithful triangle functor from the totally acyclic complexes to the stable derived category. We show that if the ring is either Artin or commutative Noetherian local, then the functor is dense if and only if the ring is Gorenstein. Motivated by this, we define the Gorenstein defect category of the ring, a category which in some sense measures how far the ring is from being Gorenstein.
Let $ \Bbbk$ be a field of arbitrary characteristic, $A$ a Noetherian $ \Bbbk$-algebra and consider the polynomial ring $A[\mathbf x]=A[x_0,\dots,x_n]$. We consider homogeneous submodules of $A[\mathbf x]^m$ having a special set of generators: a marked basis over a quasi-stable module. Such a marked basis inherits several good properties of a Gröbner basis, including a Noetherian reduction relation. The set of submodules of $A[\mathbf x]^m$ having a marked basis over a given quasi-stable module has an affine scheme structure that we are able to exhibit. Furthermore, the syzygies of a module ge…
Let $K$ be a Gorenstein noetherian ring of finite Krull dimension, and consider the category of cohomologically noetherian commutative differential graded rings $A$ over $K$, such that $H^0(A)$ is essentially of finite type over $K$, and $A$ has finite flat dimension over $K$. We extend Grothendieck's twisted inverse image pseudofunctor to this category by generalizing the theory of rigid dualizing complexes to this setup. We prove functoriality results with respect to cohomologically finite and cohomologically essentially smooth maps, and prove a perfect base change result for $f^{!}$ in this…
In this paper, we shall describe the graded canonical module of a Noetherian multi-section ring of a normal projective variety. In particular, in the case of the Cox ring, we prove that the graded canonical module is a graded free module of rank one with the shift of degree $K_X$. We shall give two kinds of proofs. The first one utilizes the equivariant twisted inverse functor developed by the first author. The second proof is down-to-earth, that avoids the twisted inverse functor.
Let $(R,\mathfrak{m})$ be a commutative noetherian local ring with $\mathfrak{m}$-adic topology, $I$ an ideal of $R$. We investigate coartinianess of $\mathrm{Ext}$ and $\mathrm{Tor}$, show that the $R$-module $\mathrm{Ext}_{R}^{i}(N,M)$ is $I$-coartinian if $M$ is a linearly compact $I$-coartinian $R$-module and $N$ is an $I$-cofinite $R$-module of dimension at most $1$; the $R$-module $\mathrm{Tor}_{i}^{R}(N,M)$ is $I$-coartinian in the case $M$ is semi-discrete linearly compact $I$-coartinian and $N$ is finitely generated with dimension at most $2$.
We consider relative Tor functors built from resolutions described by a semidualizing module C over a commutative noetherian ring R. We show that the bifunctors Tor^{F_CM}_i (-,-) and Tor^{P_CM}_i (-,-), defined using flat-like and projective-like resolutions, are isomorphic. We show how the vanishing of these functors characterizes the finiteness of the homological dimension F_C-pd, and we use this to give a relation between the F_C-pd of a given module and that of a pure submodule. On the other hand, we show that other relations that one may expect to hold similarly, fail in general. In fact…
Let $R$ be a commutative Noetherian local ring of prime characteristic $p$ and $f:R\to R$ the Frobenius ring homomorphism. For $e\ge 1$ let $R^{(e)}$ denote the ring $R$ viewed as an $R$-module via $f^e$. Results of Peskine, Szpiro, and Herzog state that for finitely generated modules $M$, $M$ has finite projective dimension if and only if $\operatorname{Tor}_i^R(R^{(e)},M)=0$ for all $i>0$ and all (equivalently, infinitely many) $e\ge 1$. We prove this statement holds for arbitrary modules using the theory of flat covers and minimal flat resolutions.
In this paper we describe an inductive machinery to investigate asymptotic behaviors of homology groups and related invariants of representations of certain graded combinatorial categories over a commutative Noetherian ring $k$, via introducing inductive functors which generalize important properties of shift functors of $\mathrm{FI}$-modules. In particular, a sufficient criterion for finiteness of Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of finitely generated representations of these categories is obtained. As applications, we show that a few important infinite combinatorial categories appearing in rep…
For a flat commutative $k$-algebra $A$ such that the enveloping algebra $A\otimes_k A$ is noetherian, given a finitely generated bimodule $M$, we show that the adic completion of the Hochschild cohomology module $HH^n(A/k,M)$ is naturally isomorphic to $HH^n(\widehat{A}/k,\widehat{M})$. To show this, we (1) make a detailed study of derived completion as a functor $D(A) \to D(\widehat{A})$ over a non-noetherian ring $A$; (2) prove a flat base change result for weakly proregular ideals; and (3) Prove that Hochschild cohomology and analytic Hochschild cohomology of complete noetherian local rings…
Let $(R,P)$ be a commutative, local Noetherian ring, $I$, $J$ ideals, $M$ and $N$ finitely generated $R$-modules. Suppose $J + ann_R M + ann_R N$ is $P$-primary. The main result of this paper is Theorem 6, which gives necessary and sufficient conditions for the length of $\t_i(M/I^nM,N/J^mN)$, to agree with a polynomial, for $m$, $n \gg 0$. As a corollary, it is shown that the length of $\t_i(M/I^nM,N/I^nN))$ always agrees with a polynomial in $n$, for $n \gg 0$, provided $I + ann_R M + ann_R N$ is $P$-primary.
Let $R$ be a commutative Noetherian ring, $I$ an ideal, $M$ and $N$ finitely generated $R$-modules. Assume $V(I)\cap Supp(M)\cap Supp(N)$ consists of finitely many maximal ideals and let $ł(\e^i(N/I^nN,M))$ denote the length of $\e^i(N/I^nN,M)$. It is shown that $ł(\e^i(N/I^nN,M))$ agrees with a polynomial in $n$ for $n>>0$, and an upper bound for its degree is given. On the other hand, a simple example shows that some special assumption such as the support condition above is necessary in order to conclude that polynomial growth holds.
The main theorem in this paper is that the base change functor from an abelian category $\cA$ to its polynomial category in the sense of Schlichting $-\otimes_{\cA}\bbZ[t]:\cA \to \cA[t]$ induces an isomorphism on their $K$-theories if $\cA$ is noetherian and has enough projective objects. The main theorem implies the well-known fact that $\mathbb{A}^1$-homotopy invariance of $K'$-theory for noetherian schemes.
Let $R\rightarrow S$ be an arbitrary ring extension of Noetherian rings. In this article we study the behaviour of Zariski closedness of the support of Lyubeznik functors $\mathrm{T}$, when the ring extension $R\rightarrow S$ is namely `flat', `faithfully flat', `pure' and lastly `cyclically pure'. We show that the Zariski closedness of the support comes down from extended ring to the base ring for faithfully flat, pure and finally for cyclically pure ring extensions. Lastly, we focus on a special case of pure extension i.e. when $R$ is a direct summand of $S$ and we compare the sets $\mathrm{…
Let $R$ be a commutative Noetherian ring with non-zero identity, $\mathfrak{a}$ an ideal of $R$, $M$ a finitely generated $R$--module, and $X$ an arbitrary $R$--module. In this paper, for non-negative integers $s, t$ and a finitely generated $R$--module $N$, we study the membership of $\operatorname{Ext}_{R}^{s}(N, \operatorname{H}^{t}_{\mathfrak{a}}(M, X))$ in Serre subcategories of the category of $R$--modules and present some upper bounds for the injective dimension and the Bass numbers of $\operatorname{H}^{t}_{\mathfrak{a}}(M, X)$. We also give some results on cofiniteness and minimaxness…
We define the graph minor category and prove that the category of contravariant representations of the graph minor category over a Noetherian ring is locally Noetherian. This can be regarded as a categorification of the Robertson--Seymour graph minor theorem. In addition, we generalize Sam and Snowden's Gröbner theory of categories to the setting of pairs consisting of a category along with a functor to sets, and we apply this theory to the edge functor on the graph minor category. As an application, we study homology groups of unordered configuration spaces of graphs, improving upon various f…
Let R be a commutative Noetherian ring, I and J ideals of R and M a finitely generated R-module. Let F be a covariant R-linear functor from the category of finitely generated R-modules to itself. We first show that if F is coherent, then the sets of associated primes of F(M/I^n M) and F(I^n-1 M / I^n M) and the J-depths of F(M/I^n M) and F(I^n-1 M / I^n M) become independent of n for large n. Next, we consider several examples in which F is a rather familiar functor, but is not coherent or not even finitely generated in general. In these cases, the set of associated primes of F(M/I^n M) still …
Let $A$ be a commutative noetherian ring, let $\mathfrak{a}\subseteq A$ be an ideal, and let $I$ be an injective $A$-module. A basic result in the structure theory of injective modules states that the $A$-module $Γ_{\mathfrak{a}}(I)$ consisting of $\mathfrak{a}$-torsion elements is also an injective $A$-module. Recently, de Jong proved a dual result: If $F$ is a flat $A$-module, then the $\mathfrak{a}$-adic completion of $F$ is also a flat $A$-module. In this paper we generalize these facts to commutative noetherian DG-rings: let $A$ be a commutative non-positive DG-ring such that $\mathrm{H}^…
Gorenstein homological dimensions are refinements of the classical homological dimensions, and finiteness singles out modules with amenable properties reflecting those of modules over Gorenstein rings. As opposed to their classical counterparts, these dimensions do not immediately come with practical and robust criteria for finiteness, not even over commutative noetherian local rings. In this paper we enlarge the class of rings known to admit good criteria for finiteness of Gorenstein dimensions: It now includes, for instance, the rings encountered in commutative algebraic geometry and, in the…
Let A be a commutative noetherian ring, and \a an ideal in it. In this paper we continue the study, begun in [PSY1], of the derived \a-adic completion and the derived \a-torsion functors. Here are our results: (1) a structural characterization of bounded above cohomologically complete complexes; (2) the Cohomologically Complete Nakayama Theorem; and (3) a characterization of cohomologically cofinite complexes.
We examine local cohomology in the setting of valuation rings. The novelty of this investigation stems from the fact that valuation rings are usually non-Noetherian, whereas local cohomology has been extensively developed mostly in a Noetherian setting. We prove various vanishing results on local cohomology for valuation rings of finite Krull dimension. These vanishing results stem from a uniform bound on the global dimension of such rings. Our investigation reveals differences in the sheaf theoretic definition of local cohomology, and the algebraic definition in terms of a limit of certain Ex…
The main purposes of this paper are to establish and exploit the result that, over a complete (Noetherian) local ring $R$ of prime characteristic for which the Frobenius homomorphism $f$ is finite, the appropriate restrictions of the Matlis-duality functor provide an equivalence between the category of left modules over the Frobenius skew polynomial ring $R[x,f]$ that are Artinian as $R$-modules and the category of right $R[x,f]$-modules that are Noetherian as $R$-modules.
Let $R$ be a commutative Noetherian ring of Krull dimension $d$ admitting a dualizing complex $D$ and let $\frak a$ be any ideal of $R$, we prove that $Γ_{\frak a}(G)$ is Gorenstein injective for any Gorenstein injective $R$-module $G$. Let $(R,\frak m)$ be a local ring and $M$ be a finitely generated $R$-module. We show that ${\rm Gid}{\bf R}Γ_{\frak m}(M)<\infty$ if and only if ${\rm Gid}_{\hat{R}}(M\otimes_R\hat{R})<\infty$. We also show that if ${\rm Gfd}_R{\bf R}Γ_{\frak m}(M)<\infty$, then ${\rm Gfd}_RM<\infty$. Let $(R,\frak m)$ be a Cohen-Macaulay local ring and $M$ be a Cohen-Macaulay…
Over a Noetherian, local ring R of prime characteristic p, the Frobenius functor F induces a diagonalizable map on certain quotients of rational Grothendieck groups. This leads to an explicit formula for the Dutta multiplicity, and it is shown that a weaker version of Serre's vanishing conjecture holds if only chi(F(X)) = p^{dim R}chi(X) for all bounded complexes X of finitely generated, projective modules with finite length homology.
Let (A,m_A) -> (B,m_B) be a local morphism of local noetherian rings and M a finitely generated B-module. Then it follows from Tor^A_1(M,A/m_A) = 0 that M is a flat A-module. This is usually called the "local criterion of flatness". We give a proof that proceeds along different lines than the usual textbook proofs, using completions and only elementary properties of flat modules and the Tor-functor.
We prove two results about the derived functor of $a$-adic completion: (1) Let $K$ be a commutative noetherian ring, let $A$ be a flat noetherian $K$-algebra which is $a$-adically complete with respect to some ideal $a\subseteq A$, such that $A/a$ is essentially of finite type over $K$, and let $M,N$ be finitely generated $A$-modules. Then adic reduction to the diagonal holds: $A\otimes^{L}_{ A\hat{\otimes}_{K} A } ( M\hat{\otimes}^{L}_{K} N ) \cong M \otimes^{L}_A N$. A similar result is given in the case where $M,N$ are not necessarily finitely generated. (2) Let $A$ be a commutative ring, l…
For a reduced Noetherian ring $R$ of characteristic $p > 0$, in this paper we discuss an extension of $R$ called its perfect closure $R^\infty$. This extension contains all $p^e$-th roots of elements of $R$, and is usually non-Noetherian. We first define the generalized notions of associated primes of a module over a non-Noetherian ring. Then for any $R$-module $M$, we state a correspondence between certain generalized prime ideals of $(R^\infty \otimes_R M)/N$ over $R^\infty$, and the union of associated prime ideals of $F^e(M)/N_e$ as $e \in \mathbb{N}$ varies. Here $F$ refers to the Frobeni…
