It is widely believed that topological superconductivity, a hitherto elusive phase of quantum matter, can be achieved by inducing superconductivity in topological materials. In search of such topological superconductors, certain topological insulators (like, Bi$_2$Se$_3$) were successfully turned into superconductors by metal-ion (Cu, Pd, Sr, Nb etc. ) intercalation. Superconductivity could be induced in topological materials through applying pressure as well. for example, a pressure-induced superconducting phase was found in the topological insulator Bi$_2$Se$_3$. However, in all such cases, no conclusive signature of topological superconductivity was found. In this review, we will discuss about another novel way of inducing superconductivity in a non-superconducting topological material -- by creating a mesoscopic interface on the material with a non-superconducting, normal metallic tip where the mesoscopic interface becomes superconducting. Such a phase is now known as a tip-induced superconducting (TISC) phase. This was first seen in 2014 on Cd$_3$As$_2$ at IISER Mohali, India. Following that, a large number of other topological materials were shown to display TISC. Since the TISC phase emerges only at a confined region under a mesoscopic point contact, traditional bulk tools for characterizing superconductivity cannot be employed to detect/confirm such a phase. On the other hand, such a point contact geometry is ideal for probing the possible existence of a temperature and magnetic field dependent superconducting energy gap and a temperature and magnetic field dependent critical current. We will review the details of the experimental signatures that can be used to prove the existence of superconductivity even when the "text-book" tests for detecting superconductivity cannot be performed. Then, we will review different systems where a TISC phase could be realized.
We present a method to produce superconducting tips to be used in Scanning Tunneling Microscopy/Spectroscopy experiments. We use these tips to investigate the evolution of the electronic density of states of NbSe2 from 0.3K up to its critical temperature (7.2K). The use of a superconducting tip (Pb) as ounterelectrode provides an enhancement of the different features related to the DOS of NbSe2 in the tunneling conductance curves, along all the studied thermal range. The analysis of the experimental results gives evidence of the presence of multiband superconductivity in NbSe2.
ZrSiS was recently shown to be a new material with topologically non-trivial band structure which exhibits multiple Dirac nodes and a robust linear band dispersion up to an unusually high energy of 2\,eV. Such a robust linear dispersion makes the topological properties of ZrSiS insensitive to perturbations like carrier doping or lattice distortion. Here we show that a novel superconducting phase with a remarkably high $T_c$ of 7.5\,K can be induced in single crystals of ZrSiS by a non-superconducting metallic tip of Ag. From first-principles calculations we show that the observed superconducti…
Recently, we presented a paper about the tip-induced superconducting phase on TaAs single crystal (arXiv:1607.00513). A conductance plateau with double conductance peaks at finite bias, sharp double dips and a zero bias conductance peak were observed in the point contact spectra (PCS). These three features in one PCS suggest the possibility of p-wave like superconductivity and Majorana zero modes in the surface. Soon after our paper posted on arXiv, Gayen el al. (arXiv:1607.01405) questioned the underlying mechanism of our observations based on their experimental measurements in conventional s…
Superconductivity with an ultra low Tc $\sim$ 0.5 mK was discovered recently in bismuth, a semimetal. To develop a model and scenario for Bi we begin with a cubic reference lattice, close to A7 (dimerized cubic) structure of Bi. Three valence electrons hop among 6p$_x$, 6p$_y$ and 6p$_z$ orbitals and form \textit{quasi one dimensional chains at half filling}. An interesting interplay follows: i) Mott localization tendency in the chains, ii) metallization by interchain hopping and iii) lattice dimerization by electron-phonon coupling. In our proposal, a potential high Tc superconductivity from …
Weyl fermion is a massless Dirac fermion with definite chirality, which has been long pursued since 1929. Though it has not been observed as a fundamental particle in nature, Weyl fermion can be realized as low-energy excitation around Weyl point in Weyl semimetal, which possesses Weyl fermion cones in the bulk and nontrivial Fermi arc states on the surface. As a firstly discovered Weyl semimetal, TaAs crystal possesses 12 pairs of Weyl points in the momentum space, which are topologically protected against small perturbations. Here, we report for the first time the tip induced superconductivi…
Recently, Wang $et$ $al.$ have reported the observation of "unconventional superconductivity" in the Weyl semimetal TaAs [arXiv:1607.00513]. The authors have written "\textit{A conductance plateau and sharp double dips are observed in the point contact spectra, indicating p-wave like unconventional superconductivity. Furthermore, the zero bias conductance peak in low temperature regime is detected, suggesting potentially the existence of Majorana zero modes. The experimentally observed tunneling spectra can be interpreted with a novel mirror-symmetry protected topological superconductor induce…
The search for nontrivial superconductivity in novel quantum materials is currently a most attractive topic in condensed matter physics and material science. The experimental studies have progressed quickly over the past couple of years. In this article, we report systematic studies of superconductivity in Au2Pb single crystals. The bulk superconductivity (onset transition temperature, Tconset= 1.3 K) of Au2Pb is characterized by both transport and diamagnetic measurements, where the upper critical field Hc2 shows unusual quasi-linear temperature dependence. The superconducting gap is revealed…
Differential resistance measurements are conducted for point contacts (PCs) between tungsten tip approaching along the $c$ axis direction and the $ab$ plane of Sr$_{2}$RuO$_{4}$ single crystal. Three key features are found. Firstly, within 0.2 mV there is a dome like conductance enhancement due to Andreev reflection at the normal-superconducting interface. By pushing the W tip further, the conductance enhancement increases from 3\% to more than 20\%, much larger than that was previously reported, probably due to the pressure exerted by the tip. Secondly, there are also superconducting like fea…
We report the observation of local superconductivity induced at the point contact formed between a normal metal tip and WC -- a triple point topological semimetal with super hardness. Remarkably, the maximum critical temperature is up to near 12 K but insensitive to the tip's magnetism. The lateral dimensions of the superconducting puddles were evaluated and the temperature dependencies of superconducting gap and upper critical field were also obtained. These results put constraints on the explanation of the induced superconductivity and pave a pathway for exploring topological superconductivi…
We study proximity induced triplet superconductivity in a spin-orbit-coupled system, and show that the \textbf{d} vector of the induced triplet superconductivity undergoes precession that can be controlled by varying the relative strengths of Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit couplings. In particular, a long-range spin-triplet helix is predicted when these two spin-orbit couplings have equal strengths. We also study the Josephson junction geometry and show that a transition between 0 and $π$ junctions can be induced by controlling the spin-orbit coupling with a gate voltage. An experimental se…
We show that optically pumped semiconductors can exhibit superconductivity. We illustrate this phenomenon in the case of a two-band semiconductor tunnel-coupled to broad-band reservoirs and driven by a continuous wave laser. More realistically, we also show that superconductivity can be induced in a two-band semiconductor interacting with a broad-spectrum light source. We furthermore discuss the case of a three-band model in which the middle band replaces the broad-band reservoirs as the source of dissipation. In all three cases, we derive the simple conditions on the band structure, electron-…
The superconducting materials family of doped Bi2Se3 remains intensively studied in the field of condensed matter physics due to strong experimental evidence for topologically non-trivial superconductivity in the bulk. However, at the surface of these materials, even the observation of superconductivity itself is still controversial. We use scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) down to 0.4 K to show that on the surface of bulk superconducting SrxBi2Se3, no gap in the density of states is observed around the Fermi energy as long as clean metallic probe tips are used. Nevertheless, using scanning …
The oxide interface between LaAlO3 and KTaO3(111) can host an electron gas that condenses into superconductivity at low temperatures. In this work, we demonstrate a local and non-volatile control of this electron gas using a biased conducting atomic force microscope tip. By scanning the tip, charges can be accumulated on the surface of LaAlO3, which subsequently tune the conduction of the buried LaAlO3/KTaO3(111) interface largely, varying from conducting (superconducting) to insulating states. The tuning effects are stable for > 20 h at room temperature. The maximum modulation of carrier dens…
We show analytically and by numerical simulations that the conductance through $π$-biased chaotic Josephson junctions is enhanced by several orders of magnitude in the short-wavelength regime. We identify the mechanism behind this effect as {\it macroscopic resonant tunneling} through a macroscopic number of low-energy quasi-degenerate Andreev levels.
The layered semimetal WTe_2 has recently been found to be a two-dimensional topological insulator (2D TI) when thinned down to a single monolayer, with conducting helical edge channels. We report here that intrinsic superconductivity can be induced in this monolayer 2D TI by mild electrostatic doping, at temperatures below 1 K. The 2D TI-superconductor transition can be easily driven by applying a just a small gate voltage. This discovery offers new possibilities for gate-controlled devices combining superconductivity and topology, and could provide a basis for quantum information schemes base…
We study proximity-induced superconductivity in gold nanowires as a function of the length of the nanowire, magnetic field, and excitation current. Short nanowires exhibit a sharp superconducting transition, whereas long nanowires show nonzero resistance. At intermediate lengths, however, we observe two sharp transitions; the normal and superconducting regions are separated by what we call the mini-gap phase. Additionally, we detect periodic oscillations in the differential magnetoresistance. We provide a theoretical model for the mini-gap phase as well as the periodic oscillations in terms of…
We report on a controlled method to fabricate in-situ a superconducting (SC) nanostructure at the apex of the standard W tip of a Scanning Tunnelling Microscope (STM) by pulsing the tunnelling voltage on a graphene covered metal surface. We have characterized the SC properties of the resulting tip as a function of temperature and magnetic field, obtaining a transition temperature of 3.3 K and a critical field well above 3T. The SC nanotip is robust, stable, and achieves atomic resolution. The non-SC tip can be easily recovered by controlled voltage pulsing on a clean metal surface. The present…
The exploration of topological superconductivity and Majorana zero modes has become a rapidly developing field. Many types of proposals to realize topological superconductors have been presented, and significant advances have been recently made. In this review, we conduct a survey on the experimental progress in possible topological superconductors and induced superconductivity in topological insulators or semimetals as well as artificial structures. The approaches to inducing superconductivity in topological materials mainly include high pressure application, the hard-tip point contact method…
In CaFe2As2, superconductivity can be achieved by applying a modest c-axis pressure of several kbar. Here we use scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/S) to explore the STM tip pressure effect on single crystals of CaFe2As2. When performing STM/S measurements, the tip-sample interaction can be controlled to act repulsive with reduction of the junction resistance, thus to apply a tip pressure on the sample. We find that an incoherent energy gap emerges at the Fermi level in the differential conductance spectrum when the tip pressure is increased. This energy gap is of the similar orde…
Superconductivity in FeTe0.8S0.2 is successfully induced by an electrochemical reaction using an ionic liquid solution. A clear correlation between the Fe concentration in the solution and the manifestation of superconductivity was confirmed, suggesting that superconductivity was induced by the deintercalation of excess iron.
Local superconducting gap structure is studied as a function of nanoscale depth in electric-field-induced surface superconductivity such as in SrTiO3. We examine solutions of Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation in two limiting confinement potential cases of electric field with and without screening effects. As unique properties different from bulk superconductivity, there appear in-gap states even for isotropic s-wave pairing, due to multiple gap structure of sub-band dependent surface superconductivity. These determine the depth-dependence of local superconductivity.
Moisture-induced superconductivity was observed in FeTe0.8S0.2. With exposing the sample to the air, the zero resistivity temperature and the superconducting volume fraction were enhanced up to 7.2 K and 48.5 %, respectively, while the as-grown sample showed only filamentary superconductivity. We concluded that the causes of the evolution of superconductivity were water-related ions and/or molecules, because only the sample kept in water at room temperature for several days showed superconductivity. The speed of evolution of superconductivity was strongly enhanced by immersing the sample into …
Vortices play a crucial role in determining the properties of superconductors as well as their applications. Therefore, characterization and manipulation of vortices, especially at the single vortex level, is of great importance. Among many techniques to study single vortices, scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) stands out as a powerful tool, due to its ability to detect the local electronic states and high spatial resolution. However, local control of superconductivity as well as the manipulation of individual vortices with the STM tip is still lacking. Here we report a new function of the ST…
Reentrant behavior is known to exist and magnetic-field-induced superconductivity has been predicted in superconductors with Kondo impurities. We present a simple framework for understanding these phenomena and generalize it to explain the long-standing puzzle of paramagnetic reentrance in thick proximity systems as due to small amounts of Kondo impurities.
We measured the electrical resistivity of a BiS2-based compound EuFBiS2 under high pressure. Polycrystalline EuFBiS2 shows insulator-metal transition and pressure-induced superconductivity above 0.7 GPa. The superconducting transition temperature increases with increasing applied pressure and shows the maximum value around 8.6 K at 1.8 GPa.
Superconductivity with Tc of 45 K was realized in the tetragonal ZrCuSiAs-type PrOxFeAs (x=0.75) under heat treatment of 1300 oC and pressure of 6 GPa for 2 hours. Although the sample prepared at 900 oC in vaccum possessed the same phase as that treated in pressure, the electrical transport measurement showed the similar behavior with its parent ReOFeAs (Re: rare-earth metal). This pressure-induced superconductivity could give us a hint to understand the origins of the newly-found iron based superconductors.
We demonstrate that in a superconducting multilayered system with alternating interlayer coupling a new type of nonuniform superconducting state can be realized under in-plane magnetic field. The Zeeman effect in this state is compensated by the energy splitting between bonding and antibonding levels. Such compensation mechanism at low temperature leads to the field-induced superconductivity. We discuss the conditions for the experimental observation of the predicted phenomena.
A search for superconductivity has been carried out on the hexagonal polymorph of Laves-phase CaLi2, a compound for which Feng, Ashcroft, and Hoffmann predict highly anomalous behavior under pressure. No superconductivity is observed above 1.10 K at ambient pressure. However, high-pressure ac susceptibility and electrical resistivity studies to 81 GPa reveal bulk superconductivity in CaLi2 at temperatures as high as 13 K. The normal-state resistivity shows a dramatic increase with pressure.
The Ca10(PtnAs8)(Fe2As2)5 (n=3,4) compounds are a new type of iron pnictide superconductors whose structures consist of stacking Ca-PtnAs8-Ca-Fe2As2 layers in a unit cell. When n=3 (the 10-3-8 phase), the undoped compound is an antiferromagnetic (AFM) semiconductor, while, when n=4 (the 10-4-8 phase), the undoped compound is a superconductor with the transition temperature of 26K. Here we report the results of high-pressure studies on the 10-3-8 compound obtained through a combination of in-situ resistance, magnetic susceptibility, and Hall coefficient measurements. We find that its AFM order …
We report our findings on the mechanism of current-induced suppression of superconductivity in amorphous tantalum films as thin as 5nm under zero applied magnetic field. Our results indicate that the applied current generates magnetic vortices threading the films, and the dynamics of these vortices leads to the suppression of the superconductivity. Our findings also imply that the motion of current-generated magnetic vortices gives rise to nonlinear transport of which characteristics closely resemble those expected in Kosterlitz-Thouless theories with strong finite size effects.
Layered metal chalcogenide materials provide a versatile platform to investigate emergent phenomena and two-dimensional (2D) superconductivity at/near the atomically thin limit. In particular, gate-induced interfacial superconductivity realized by the use of an electric-double-layer transistor (EDLT) has greatly extended the capability to electrically induce superconductivity in oxides, nitrides and transition metal chalcogenides and enable one to explore new physics, such as the Ising pairing mechanism. Exploiting gate-induced superconductivity in various materials can provide us with additio…
We report superconductivity induced in films of the non-superconducting, antiferromagnetic parent material FeTe by low temperature oxygen incorporation in a reversible manner. X-ray absorption shows that oxygen doping changes the nominal Fe valence state from 2+ in the non-superconducting state to mainly 3+ in the superconducting state. Thus superconductivity in O doped FeTe occurs in a quite different charge and strain state than the more common FeTe$_{1-x}$Se$_x$. This work also suggests a convenient path for conducting doping experiments in-situ with many measurement techniques.
The approach applicable for spatially inhomogeneous and time-dependent problems associated with the induced superconductivity in low dimensional electronic systems is developed. This approach is based on the Fano--Anderson model which describes the decay of a resonance state coupled to a continuum. We consider two types of junctions made of a ballistic 2D electron gas placed in a tunnel finite-length contact with a bulk superconducting leads. We calculate the spectrum of the bound states, supercurrent, and the current-voltage curve which show a rich structure due to the presence of induced gap…
In this letter we report on proximity superconductivity induced in CdTe-HgTe core-shell nanowires, a quasi-one-dimensional heterostructure of the topological insulator HgTe. We demonstrate a Josephson supercurrent in our nanowires contacted with superconducting Al leads. The observation of a sizable $I_c R_n$ product, a positive excess current and multiple Andreev reflections up to fourth order further indicate a high interface quality of the junctions.
Roles of paramagnetic and diamagnetic pair-breaking effects in superconductivity in electric-field-induced surface metallic state are studied by Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation, when magnetic fields are applied parallel to the surface. The multi-gap states of sub-bands are related to the depth dependence and the magnetic field dependence of superconductivity. In the Fermi-energy density of states and the spin density, sub-band contributions successively appear from higher-level sub-bands with increasing magnetic fields. The characteristic magnetic field dependence may be a key feature to identif…
We report specific-heat and resistivity experiments performed in parallel in a Bridgman-type of pressure cell in order to investigate the nature of pressure-induced superconductivity in the iron pnictide compound CaFe2As2. The presence of a pronounced specific-heat anomaly at Tc reveals a bulk nature of the superconducting state. The thermodynamic transition temperature differs dramatically from the onset of the resistive transition. Our data indicates that superconductivity occurs in the vicinity of a crystallographic phase transition. We discuss the discrepancy between the two methods as cau…
The mechanism of superconductivity in ${\rm Sr}_{2}{\rm RuO}_{4}$ is studied using a degenerate Hubbard model within the weak coupling theory. When the system approaches the orbital instability which is realized due to increasing the on-site Coulomb interaction between the electrons in the different orbitals, it is shown that the triplet superconductivity appears. This superconducting mechanism is only available in orbitally degenerate systems with multiple Fermi surfaces.
We reported that bulk superconductivity in Fe$_{1+y}$Te$_{1-x}$Se$_{x}$ can be induced by annealing in Se and S vapor. The well-annealed samples show a large critical current density, emph{J}$_c$ $\sim$ 2 - 4 $\times$ 10$^5$ A/cm$^2$. Combined with our previous reports about O$_2$ and Te annealing effects, we proved that bulk superconductivity can be successfully induced in Fe$_{1+y}$Te$_{1-x}$Se$_{x}$ by annealing in atmosphere of all chalcogens, such as O, S, Se and Te.
The evolution of pressure induced superconductivity in single crystal as well as polycrystalline samples of BaFe2As2 has been investigated through temperature dependent electrical resistivity studies in 0-7 GPa pressure range. While the superconducting transition remains incomplete in polycrystalline sample, a clear pressure induced superconductivity with zero resistivity at the expense of magnetic transition, associated with spin density wave (SDW), is observed in the single crystal sample. The superconducting transition temperature (TC) is seen to increase upto a moderate pressure of about ~…
We explore a spin-fermion model with fermion-spin-quadrupolar interaction. In a nematic phase, this interaction reduces to a four-fermion interaction that is a basis of superconductivity. When the coupling constant is positive the superconductivity is p-wave with spin-parallel paired fermions. When it is negative the superconductivity is p-wave and fermions are spin-antiparallel paired. For a system with zero chemical potential, even a very small coupling can bind fermions into bound state that leads to the superconductivity. When the chemical potential is non-zero the system possesses quantum…
Using a prototype model for proximity induced superconductivity on a bilayer square lattice, we show that interlayer tunneling can drive change in topology of the Bogoliubov quasiparticle bands. Starting with topologically trivial superconductors, transitions to a non-trivial $p_x + {\rm i} p_y$ state and back to another trivial state are discovered. We characterize these phases in terms of edge-state spectra and Chern indices. We show that these transitions can also be controlled by experimentally viable control parameters, the bandwidth of the metallic layer and the gate potential. Insights …
Mineral calaverite AuTe2 is a layered compound with an incommensurately modulated structure. The modulation is characterized by the formation of molecular-like Te2 dimers. We have found that the breaking of Te2 dimers that occurs in Au1-xPtxTe2 results in the emergence of superconductivity at Tc = 4.0 K.
A series of high-pressure resistivity measurements on single crystals of TbTe3 reveal a complex phase diagram involving the interplay of superconducting, antiferromagnetic and charge density wave orders. The onset of superconductivity reaches a maximum of ~ 3.5 K (onset) near 75 kbar.
The perpendicular critical fields of a superconducting film have been strongly enhanced by using a nanoengineered lattice of magnetic dots (dipoles) on top of the film. Magnetic-field-induced superconductivity is observed in these hybrid superconductor / ferromagnet systems due to the compensation of the applied field between the dots by the stray field of the dipole array. By switching between different magnetic states of the nanoengineered field compensator, the critical parameters of the superconductor can be effectively controlled.
One approach to discovering topological superconductor is establishing superconductivity based on well-identified topological insulators. However, the coexistence of superconductivity and topological state is always arcane. In this paper, we report how pressure tunes the crystal structure, electronic structure, and superconductivity in topological insulator Bi2Te2.1Se0.9. The first pressure-induced structure transition start from 8.4 GPa, followed by the structure sequence of R-3m - C2/m - C2/c - Im-3m up to 37 GPa. Superconductivity starts to present at 2.4 GPa with the Tc around 6.6 K. Moreo…
Cavalleri and coworkers have discovered evidence of light-induced superconductivity and related phenomena in several different materials. Here we suggest that some features may be naturally interpreted using a time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau model. In particular, we focus on the lifetime of the transient state in La$_{1.675}$Eu$_{0.2}$Sr$_{0.125}$CuO$_4$ (LESCO$_{1/8}$), which is remarkably long below about 25 K, but exhibits different behavior at higher temperature.
Using a diamond anvil cell with nearly hydrostatic helium pressure medium we have significantly extended the superconducting phase diagram Tc(P) of Sc, the lightest of all transition metals. We find that superconductivity is induced in Sc under pressure, Tc increasing monotonically to 8.2 K at 74.2 GPa. The Tc(P) dependences of the trivalent d-electron metals Sc, Y, La, and Lu are compared and discussed within a simple s-d charge transfer framework.
We observe a characteristic energy $\hbarω_{c}\approx 2.1$ eV which separates regions of different behavior of the phonon intensities in the Raman spectra of the $R\rm Ba_2Cu_3O_7$ system. A superconductivity-induced drop of phonon intensities is found for the oxygen modes O(4) and O(2)-O(3) only for excitation energies below $\hbarω_c$. This intensity drop indicates an order parameter which affects energies in the vicinity of $\hbarω_c$.
Using Andreev reflection (AR) as an experimental gauge of the superconducting proximity effect (PE), we assess the topological purity of the superconductivity that is induced by the c-axis PE between an s-wave superconductor and the topological insulators Bi$_{2}$X$_{3}$ (X=Se,Te). Point-contact AR spectroscopy is performed with Nb tips on Bi$_{2}$X$_{3}$ single crystals at 4.2 K. Scanning tunneling spectroscopy is also used, to locate the Fermi level $E_F$ relative to the Dirac point in the crystals. The AR data is analyzed with Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk theory, taking into account tip-induced…
We investigate the influence of a d-density wave (DDW) gap on the superconductivity-induced renormalization of phonon frequency and linewidth. The results are discussed with respect to Raman and inelastic neutron scattering experiments. It turns out that the DDW gap can enhance the range of frequencies for $q=0$ phonon softening depending on the underlying band structure. Moreover we show that an anisotropic 'd-wave' pseudogap can also contribute to the q-dependent linewidth broadening of the 340cm$^{-1}$ phonon in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_7$.
To understand the recently observed high temperature superconductivity in the monolayer CuO$_2$ grown on the Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ substrates, we propose a two band model of the hybridized oxygen $p_x$ and $p_y$ orbitals with the proximity effect of the substrate. We demonstrate that both the nodal and nodeless d-wave superconducting states can be induced by the proximity effect, depending on the strengths of the pairing parameters.
