Light escape from an optical waveguide side-coupled to a waveguide lattice provides a photonic analogue of the spontaneous emission process of an excited two-level atom in a one-dimensional array of cavities. According to the Fermi golden rule the decay process is prevented when the atomic resonance frequency falls in a stop band of the lattice, while time-reversal symmetry ensures that the spontaneously emitted photon has equal probability to propagate in opposite directions of the array. This scenario is drastically modified when the quantum emitter drifts along the lattice at a constant speed. In the waveguide optics analogue the atomic drift is emulated by the introduction of a slight geometric tilt of the waveguide axis from the lattice axis. In this setting light excitation in the array is chiral, i.e. light propagates in a preferred direction of the lattice, and coupling is allowed even though the waveguide is far detuned from the tight-binding lattice band.
Based on coupled mode equations, the formula of null null bandwidth for tilted fiber grating is deduced in this paper. Numerical simulations and theoretical analysis of the effects of the tilt angle on bandwidth and maximum reflectivity are performed. Furthermore, under the maximum reflection of 95%, the relation of bandwidth with modulation amplitude and length of grating, and the needed length of grating are demonstrated in two three dimensional diagrams. It reveals that the grating tilt can obviously narrow the bandwidth, especially in the case of large modulation amplitude and grating leng…
Terahertz (THz)-bandwidth continuous-wave (CW) squeezed light is essential for integrating quantum processors with time-domain multiplexing (TDM) by using optical delay line interferometers. Here, we utilize a single-pass optical parametric amplifier (OPA) based on a single-spatial-mode periodically poled ZnO:LiNbO3 waveguide, which is directly bonded onto a LiTaO3 substrate. The single-pass OPA allows THz bandwidth, and the absence of higher-order spatial modes in the single-spatial-mode structure helps to avoid degradation of squeezing. In addition, the directly bonded ZnO-doped waveguide ha…
We theoretically study unattenuated electromagnetic guided wave modes in centrosymmetric Weyl semimetal layered systems. By solving Maxwell's equations for the electromagnetic fields and using the appropriate boundary conditions, we derive dispersion relations for propagating modes in a finite-sized Weyl semimetal. Our findings reveal that for ultrathin structures, and proper Weyl cones tilts, extremely localized guided waves can propagate along the semimetal interface over a certain range of frequencies. This follows from the anisotropic nature of the semimetal where the diagonal components o…
We propose to use the integrated aluminum nitride waveguide with engineered width variation to achieve optical frequency conversion based on $χ^{(2)}$ nonlinear effect on a photonic chip. We show that in an adiabatically tapered waveguide, the frequency conversion has a much broader bandwidth and the efficiency within the bandwidth is almost constant, which is favorable for short pulses. We demonstrate both analytically and numerically an "area law" for the frequency conversion, i.e. the product of bandwidth and efficiency is conserved as long as peak conversion efficiency does not saturate. T…
Light pulses entering an elongated bottle microresonator (BMR) from a transversely oriented input-output waveguide (microfiber) slowly propagate along the BMR length and bounce between turning points at its constricting edges. To avoid insertion losses and processing errors, a pulse should completely transfer from the waveguide into the BMR and, after being processed, completely return back into the waveguide. For this purpose, the waveguide and BMR should be impedance matched along the pulse bandwidth. Here we show how to enhance the impedance matched bandwidth by optimization of the BMR effe…
We report on the spectral properties of a diode laser with a tunable external cavity in integrated optics. Even though the external cavity is short compared to other small-bandwidth external cavity lasers, the spectral bandwidth of this tunable laser is as small as 25 kHz (FWHM), at a side-mode suppression ratio (SMSR) of 50 dB. Our laser is also able to access preset wavelengths in as little as 200 us and able to tune over the full telecom C-band (1530 nm - 1565 nm).
Optical modulators are required to have high modulation bandwidths and a compact footprint. In this paper we experimentally demonstrate a novel Si/In$_2$O$_3$ hybrid plasmonic waveguide modulator, which is realized by an asymmetric directional coupler (ADC) consisting of a silicon photonic waveguide and a Si/In$_2$O$_3$ hybrid plasmonic waveguide. The optical signal is modulated by radio-frequency (RF) signal applied on the Au electrodes at the top of MOS capacitor and contacting the In$_2$O$_3$ thin film. The record-high modulation bandwidth of >40 GHz is realized by a silicon-doping-free met…
We demonstrate adiabatically tapered fibers terminating in sub-micron tips that are clad with a higher-index material for coupling to an on-chip waveguide. This cladding enables coupling to a high-index waveguide without losing light to the buried oxide. A technique to clad the tip of the tapered fiber with a higher-index polymer is introduced. Conventional tapered waveguides and forked tapered waveguide structures are investigated for coupling from the clad fiber to the on-chip waveguide. We find the forked waveguide facilitates alignment and packaging, while the conventional taper leads to h…
Dispersion engineering is among the most important steps towards a promising optical frequency comb. We propose a new and general approach to trim frequency combs using a self-adaptive boundary of the optical mode at different wavelengths in a sub-wavelength structured waveguide. The feasibility of ultra-wide bandwidth dispersion engineering comes from the fact that light at different wavelengths automatically self-adapts to slightly different effective spatial spans determined by the effective indices of the mode. Using this self-adaptive variation on the confinement, we open up the window of…
We report an all-optical radio-frequency (RF) spectrum analyzer with a bandwidth greater than 5 terahertz (THz), based on a 50-cm long spiral waveguide in a CMOS-compatible high-index doped silica platform. By carefully mapping out the dispersion profile of the waveguides for different thicknesses, we identify the optimal design to achieve near zero dispersion in the C-band. To demonstrate the capability of the RF spectrum analyzer, we measure the optical output of a femtosecond fiber laser with an ultrafast optical RF spectrum in the terahertz regime.
Here we propose a waveguide-integrated germanium plasmonic photodetector that is based on a long-range dielectric-loaded surface plasmon polariton waveguide configuration. As this configuration ensures a long propagation distance, i.e., small absorption into metal, and a good mode field confinement, i.e., high interaction of the electric field with a germanium material, it is perfect for a realization of plasmonic germanium photodetectors. Such a photodetector even without optimization provides a responsivity exceeding 1 A/W for both wavelengths of 1310 nm and 1550 nm. To achieve such a respon…
We construct families of optical semi-discrete composite solitons (SDCSs), with one or two independent propagation constants, supported by a planar slab waveguide, XPM-coupled to a periodic array of stripes. Both structures feature the cubic nonlinearity and support intrinsic modes with mutually orthogonal polarizations. We report three species of SDCSs, odd, even, and twisted ones, the first type being stable. Transverse motion of phase-tilted solitons, with potential applications to beam steering, is considered too.
Topological photonic crystal waveguides can create edge states that may be more robust against fabrication disorder, and can yield propagation modes below the light line. We present a fully three-dimensional method to modify state-of-the-art designs to achieve a significant bandwidth improvement for lossless propagation. Starting from an initial design with a normalized bandwidth of 7.5% (13.4 THz), the modification gives more than 100% bandwidth improvement to 16.2% (28.0 THz). This new design is obtained using automatic differentiation enabled inverse design and a guided mode expansion techn…
We report on systematic experimental mapping of the transmission properties of two-dimensional silicon-on-insulator photonic crystal waveguides for a broad range of hole radii, slab thicknesses and waveguide lengths for both TE and TM polarizations. Detailed analysis of numerous spectral features allows a direct comparison of experimental data with 3D plane wave and finite-difference time-domain calculations. We find, counter-intuitively, that the bandwidth for low-loss propagation completely vanishes for structural parameters where the photonic band gap is maximized. Our results demonstrate t…
Strong amplification in integrated photonics is one of the most desired optical functionalities for computing, communications, sensing, and quantum information processing. Semiconductor gain and cubic nonlinearities, such as four-wave mixing and stimulated Raman and Brillouin scattering, have been among the most studied amplification mechanisms on chip. Alternatively, material platforms with strong quadratic nonlinearities promise numerous advantages with respect to gain and bandwidth, among which nanophotonic lithium niobate is one of the most promising candidates. Here, we combine quasi-phas…
A novel thin-film LiNbO3 (TFLN) electro-optic modulator is proposed and demonstrated. LiNbO3-silica hybrid waveguide is adopted to maintain low optical loss for an electrode spacing as narrow as 3 μm, resulting in a record low half-wave-voltage length product of only 1.7 V*cm. Capacitively loaded traveling-wave electrodes (CL-TWEs) are employed to reduce the microwave loss, while quartz substrate is used in place of silicon substrate to achieve velocity matching. The fabricated TFLN modulator with a 5-mm-long modulation region exhibits a half-wave-voltage of 3.4 V and merely 1.3 dB roll-off in…
Quantum memory is a fundamental building block for large-scale quantum networks. On-demand optical storage with a large bandwidth, a high multimode capacity and an integrated structure simultaneously is crucial for practical application. However, this has not been demonstrated yet. Here, we fabricate an on-chip waveguide in a $\mathrm {^{151}Eu^{3+}:Y_2SiO_5}$ crystal with insertion losses of 0.2 dB, and propose a novel pumping scheme to enable spin-wave atomic frequency comb (AFC) storage with a bandwidth of 11 MHz inside the waveguide. Based on this, we demonstrate the storage of 200 tempora…
Achieving large bandwidth at strong mode conversion strengths is a central problem in few-mode optical waveguides. The most uncomplicated modification of a standard mode-converting grating is to incorporate a single extra gap. Such simple design has not been applied yet for broadening conversion spectrum between core modes of any few-mode waveguide e.g. few-mode fiber, possibly due to lacking knowledge of critical parameter control: (a) phase shift value at resonance wavelength, and (b) deterministic method for placement of the phase shift(s) accommodating the change in waveguide properties du…
The possibility of direct observation of Nonlinear Landau-Zener tunnelling effect with a device consisting of two waveguide arrays connected with a tilted reduced refractive index barrier is discussed. Numerical simulations on this realistic setup are interpreted via simplified double well system and different asymmetric tunnelling scenarios were predicted just varying injected beam intensity.
We demonstrate wavelength conversion of QAM signals including 32GBd QPSK and 10GBd 16QAM in a 50cm long high index doped glass spiral waveguide. The quality of the generated idlers over a 10nm bandwidth is sufficient to achieve a BER performance below the HD FEC threshold (less than 3.8 x 10-3), with an OSNR penalty of less than 0.3 dB compared to the original signal. Our results confirm that this is a promising platform for nonlinear optical signal processing, a result of both very low linear propagation loss (less than 0.07 dB/cm) and the large material bandgap that ensures negligible nonlin…
We present a monolithic solution to extract efficiently light from terahertz quantum cascade lasers with metal-metal waveguides suitable for broadband frequency comb applications. The design is optimized for a bandwidth of 500 GHz around a center frequency of 2.6 THz. A five-fold increase in total output power is observed compared to standard metal-metal waveguides. The extractor features a single-lobed far-field pattern and increases the frequency comb dynamical range to cover more than 50 % of the laser dynamic range. Frequency comb operation up to a spectral bandwidth of 670 GHz is achieved…
Electromagnetic pulses with tilted pulse fronts are instrumental in enhancing the efficiency of many light-matter interaction processes, with prominent examples including terahertz generation by optical rectification, dielectric laser acceleration, ultrafast electron imaging and X-ray generation from free electron lasers. Here, we find closed-form expressions for tilted-pulse-front pulses that capture their exact propagation dynamics even in deeply nonparaxial and sub-single-cycle regimes. By studying the zero-bandwidth counterparts of these pulses, we further obtain classes of nondiffracting …
We investigate high-fidelity multiple beam splitting in Hermitian and non-Hermitian symmetric coupled waveguides with one input and 2N output waveguide channels. In Hermitian systems, we realize adiabatically light splitting in resonant case based on the stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP) and arbitrary proportion from the middle waveguide to outer waveguides in propagation coefficients mismatch case using shortcuts to adiabaticity (STA) technique. In non-Hermitian systems with even waveguides being dissipative, the compact and robust beam splitting can be achieved by eliminating the n…
A 2-D spatio-temporal analysis of terahertz generation by optical rectification of tilted-pulse-fronts is presented. Closed form expressions of terahertz transients and spectra in two spatial dimensions are furnished in the undepleted limit. Importantly, the analysis incorporates spatio-temporal distortions of the optical pump pulse such as angular dispersion, group-velocity dispersion due to angular dispersion, spatial and temporal chirp as well as beam curvature. The importance of the radius of curvature to the tilt-angle and group-velocity dispersion due to angular dispersion to terahertz f…
Electro-optic (EO) modulators rely on interaction of optical and electrical signals with second-order nonlinear media. For the optical signal, this interaction can be strongly enhanced by using dielectric slot-waveguide structures that exploit a field discontinuity at the interface between a high-index waveguide core and the low-index EO cladding. In contrast to this, the electrical signal is usually applied through conductive regions in the direct vicinity of the optical waveguide. To avoid excessive optical loss, the conductivity of these regions is maintained at a moderate level, thus leadi…
An electro-absorption optical modulator concept based upon a dual-graphene layer is presented. The device consists of a silicon-on-insulator waveguide upon which two graphene layers reside, separated by a thin insulating region. The lower graphene acts as a tunable absorber, while the upper layer functions as a transparent gate electrode. Calculations based upon realistic graphene material properties show that 3-dB bandwidths over 100 GHz (30 GHz) are possible at near- (λ=1.55 μm) and mid- (λ=3.5μm) infrared bands. The effect of background doping and potential fluctuations on the bandwidth, mo…
Aluminum nitride (AlN)-on-insulator has emerged as a promising platform for the realization of linear and non-linear integrated photonic circuits. In order to efficiently route optical signals on-chip, precise control over the interaction and polarization of evanescently coupled waveguide modes is required. Here we employ nanophotonic AlN waveguides to realize directional couplers with a broad coupling bandwidth and low insertion loss. We achieve uniform splitting of incoming modes, confirmed by high extinction-ratio exceeding 33dB in integrated Mach-Zehnder Interferometers. Optimized three-wa…
When a pump beam is propagating through a silicon nanophotonic waveguide, a very small fraction of the light is scattered to other frequencies. At very low intensity, the amount of scattered light is proportional to the power of the pump beam. We show that the scattering intensity increases linearly within the temperature range 300-575 K and that the photon flux decreases as the inverse of the frequency detuning ν over the investigated bandwidth 0.4 THz < |ν| < 2.5 THz. The simplest interpretation of these observations is that the pump beam is scattered on a 1 dimensional thermal bath of excit…
A photodiode with 0.55$\pm$0.1 A/W responsivity at a wavelength of 1176.9 nm has been fabricated in a 45 nm microelectronics silicon-on-insulator foundry process. The resonant waveguide photodetector exploits carrier generation in silicon-germanium (SiGe) within a microring which is compatible with high-performance electronics. A 3 dB bandwidth of 5 GHz at -4 V bias is obtained with a dark current of less than 20 pA.
A fundamental building block for on-chip quantum photonics is a single-photon source with high repetition rates, which can enable many applications such as high-speed quantum communication and quantum information processing. Ideally, such single photon sources would then require a large on-chip photon extraction decay rate, namely the rate of excited photons coupled into nanofibers or waveguides, over a broad spectral range. However, this goal has remained elusive till date. Here we propose a feasible scheme to enhance the on-chip photon extraction decay rate of quantum emitters, through the t…
A fast silicon-graphene hybrid plasmonic waveguide photodetectors beyond 1.55 μm is proposed and realized by introducing an ultra-thin wide silicon-on-insulator ridge core region with a narrow metal cap. With this novel design, the light absorption in graphene is enhanced while the metal absorption loss is reduced simultaneously, which helps greatly improve the responsivity as well as shorten the absorption region for achieving fast responses. Furthermore, metal-graphene-metal sandwiched electrodes are introduced to reduce the metal-graphene contact resistance, which is also helpful for improv…
We study the dispersion relations in slow-light waveguide structures consisting of coupled microdisk resonators. A group theoretical analysis of the symmetry properties of the propagating modes reveals an interesting phenomenon: The degeneracy of the CW and CCW rotating modes is removed, giving rise to two distinct transmission bands. This effect induces symmetry-based dispersion which may limit usable bandwidth of such structures. The properties of this band splitting and its impact on CROW performance for optical communications are studied in detail.
Four-wave mixing is observed in a silicon W1 photonic crystal waveguide. The dispersion dependence of the idler conversion efficiency is measured and shown to be enhanced at wavelengths exhibiting slow group velocities. A 12-dB increase in the conversion efficiency is observed. Concurrently, a decrease in the conversion bandwidth is observed due to the increase in group velocity dispersion in the slow-light regime. The experimentally observed conversion efficiencies agree with the numerically modeled results.

We demonstrate temporal measurements of subpicosecond optical pulses via time-to-frequency conversion in a 45cm long CMOS compatible high index glass spiral waveguide. The measurements are based on efficient four wave mixing in the C-band, using around 1W of peak pump power. We achieve a resolution of 400fs over a time window of 100ps, representing a time-bandwidth product > 250.
The integration density of photonic integrated circuits has been limited by light coupling between waveguides. Traditional approaches to layout the waveguide with high density are based on refractive index engineering to suppress the light coupling between waveguides. However, these methods mostly require sophisticated and sensitive structure design, thus lack universality. Herein, we propose high-density multi-mode-multi-core integrated photonic waveguides by inserting high-loss metal strips between waveguides. We have achieved a 10-spatial-channel multi-mode-multi-core waveguide with total o…
We demonstrate efficient generation of mid-infrared frequency combs based on continuous-wave-seeded femtosecond optical parametric generation in nonlinear waveguides. Conversion of the near-infrared pump to signal and idler light takes place with very high efficiency (74 %) and the threshold (25 pJ) is over 300 times lower than in bulk analogs. Relative intensity noise of the mid-infrared comb is exceptionally low, below 5*10-5 (detector-limited, integrated from 10 Hz to 2 MHz). Furthermore, the mid-infrared bandwidth can be increased by driving the process with broadband pump obtained via sup…
Visible and near-infrared spectrum photonic integrated circuits are quickly becoming a key technology to address the scaling challenges in quantum information and biosensing. Thus far, integrated photonic platforms in this spectral range have lacked integrated photodetectors. Here, we report the first silicon nitride-on-silicon waveguide photodetectors that are monolithically integrated in a visible light photonic platform on silicon. Owing to a leaky-wave silicon nitride-on-silicon design, the devices achieved a high external quantum efficiency of > 60% across a record wavelength span from $λ…
We investigate the single-particle time evolution and two-particle quantum correlations in a one-dimensional $N$-site lattice with a site-dependent nearest neighbor tunneling function $t_α(k)=t_0[k(N-k)]^{α/2}$. Since the bandwidth and the energy levels spacings for such a lattice both depend upon $α$, we show that the observable properties of a wavepacket, such as its spread and the relative phases of its constitutents, vary dramatically as $α$ is varied from positive to negative values. We also find that the quantum correlations are exquisitely sensitive to the form of the tunneling function…
We report an integrated all-optical radio frequency spectrum analyzer based on a ~ 4cm long doped silica glass waveguide, with a bandwidth greater than 2.5 THz. We use this device to characterize the intensity power spectrum of ultrahigh repetition rate mode-locked lasers at repetition rates up to 400 GHz, and observe dynamic noise related behavior not observable with other techniques.
We report electro-absorption modulation of light at around 1550 nm in a unipolar InGaAlAs optical waveguide containing a InGaAs/AlAs double-barrier resonant tunneling diode (DB-RTD). The RTD peak-to-valley transition increases the electric field across the waveguide, which shifts the core material absorption band-edge to longer wavelengths via the Franz-Keldysh effect, thus changing the light-guiding characteristics of the waveguide. Low-frequency characterisation of a device shows modulation up to 28 dB at 1565 nm. When dc biased close to the negative differential conductance (NDC) region, th…
Nanophotonic waveguides with sub-wavelength mode confinement and engineered dispersion profiles are an excellent platform for application-tailored nonlinear optical interactions at low pulse energies. Here, we present fully air clad suspended-silicon waveguides for infrared frequency comb generation with optical bandwidth limited only by the silicon transparency. The achieved spectra are lithographically tailored to span 2.1 octaves in the mid-infrared (2.0-8.5 um or 1170--5000 cm-1) when pumped at 3.10 um with 100 pJ pulses. Novel fork-shaped couplers provide efficient input coupling with onl…
High-performance optical beam splitters are of fundamental importance for the development of advanced silicon photonics integrated circuits. However, due to the high refractive index contrast of the silicon-on-insulator platform, state of the art Si splitters are hampered by trade-offs in bandwidth, polarization dependence and sensitivity to fabrication errors. Here, we present a new strategy that exploits modal engineering in slotted waveguides to overcome these limitations, enabling ultra-wideband polarization-insensitive optical power splitters, with relaxed fabrication tolerances. The prop…
