We generalize the formalism proposed by Dalibard, Dupont-Roc and Cohen-Tannoudji [the DDC formalism] to the fourth order of the coupling constant, which can be used to study the interatomic interaction of two ground-state atoms coupled with the vacuum scalar fields. We show that the interatomic potential can be attributed to the joint effect of both vacuum fluctuations and the radiation reaction of atoms. Remarkably, the formulae we derived for the contributions of vacuum fluctuations and the radiation reaction to the interatomic potential upon which future research on fourth-order effects in particular circumstances can be based differ from those in the existing literature [Phys. Rev. D 95, 085014 (2017)].
The resonance fluorescence emitted by a system of two dipole-dipole interacting nearby four-level atoms in J=1/2 - J=1/2 configuration is studied. This setup is the simplest realistic model system which provides a complete description of the (interatomic) dipole-dipole interaction for arbitrary orientation of the interatomic distance vector, and at the same time allows for intraatomic spontaneously generated coherences. We discuss different methods to analyze the contribution of the various vacuum-induced coupling constants to the total resonance fluorescence spectrum. These allow us to find a…
Based on the idea that the vacuum fluctuations of electromagnetic fields can induce instantaneous correlated dipoles, we study the far-zone Casimir-Polder potential between two atoms in the Boulware, Unruh and Hartle-Hawking vacua outside a Schwarzschild black hole. We show that, at spatial infinity, the Casimir-Polder potential in the Boulware vacuum is similar to that in the Minkowski vacuum in flat spacetime with a behavior of $R^{-7}$, so is in the Unruh vacuum as a result of the backscattering of the Hawking radiation from the black hole off the spacetime curvature. However, the interatom…
A number of recent controversial experiments have observed anomalous thrust forces with devices making use of electromagnetic fields, and which do not appear to emit any particles or radiation; in apparent violation of the principle of the conservation of momentum. This has led to proposals that the measured forces are being produced due to an interaction between the applied electromagnetic fields of the device, and virtual particles/anti-particles of the quantum vacuum. Using an argument based on Lorentz invariance, as well as a formal quantum field theoretic calculation, we investigate the f…
By generalizing the formalism proposed by Dalibard, Dupont-Roc and Cohen Tannoudji, we study the resonance interatomic energy of two identical atoms coupled to quantum massless scalar fields in a symmetric /antisymmetric entangled state in the Minkowski and cosmic string spacetimes. We find that in both spacetimes, the resonance interatomic energy has nothing to do with the field fluctuations but is attributed to the radiation reaction of the atoms only. We then concretely calculate the resonance interatomic energy of two static atoms near a perfectly reflecting boundary in the Minkowski space…
We study the influence of the environment-induced interatomic interaction, which is usually neglected, on the entanglement dynamics of two uniformly accelerated atoms coupled with fluctuating massless scalar fields in the Minkowski vacuum. When the two-atom system is initially prepared in a separable state such that the two atoms are in the ground and excited states respectively, the environment-induced interatomic interaction assists entanglement generation, in the sense that the parameter space of acceleration and interatomic separation that allows entanglement generation is enlarged, the ra…
We analyze entanglement generation between a pair of neutral two level atoms that are initially excited in a common electromagnetic vacuum. The nonlocal correlations that appear due to the interaction with the field can become entanglement when the field state is known. We distinguish two different situations: in the first, the field remains in the vacuum state, and second two photons are present in the final state. In both cases we study the dependence of the entanglement with time and interatomic distance, at ranges related with locality issues.
We investigate radiative processes of inertial two-level atoms in an entangled state interacting with a quantum electromagnetic field. Our intention is to clarify and to analyze the contributions of vacuum fluctuations and radiation reaction to the decay rate of the entangled state. The possible relevance of the findings in the present work is discussed.
We consider vacuum fluctuations of the quantum electromagnetic field in the presence of an infinite and perfectly conducting plate. We evaluate how the change of vacuum fluctuations due to the plate modifies the Casimir-Polder potential between two atoms placed near the plate. We use two different methods to evaluate the Casimir-Polder potential in the presence of the plate. They also give new insights on the role of boundary conditions in the Casimir-Polder interatomic potential, as well as indications for possible generalizations to more complicated boundary conditions.
We investigate the dynamics of a two-level atom flying through a photonic cavity when the light-matter interaction is in the ultrastrong coupling regime. We adopt a closed full quantum description that takes into account the quantization of the atom center-of-mass motion in addition to its internal degree of freedom and to the quantized photonic cavity field. We find that multiple qualitatively different dynamical regimes are achievable according to two key figures of merit: the ratio between the kinetic energy and the bare excitation energies, and the product of these bare energies with the t…
We investigate the resonance dipole-dipole interaction energy between two identical atoms, one in the ground state and the other in the excited state, interacting with the electromagnetic field in the presence of a perfectly reflecting plane boundary. The atoms are prepared in a correlated (symmetric or anti-symmetric) Bell-type state. Following a procedure due to Dalibard et. al. [J. Dalibard et. al., J. Phys. (Paris) {\bf 43}, 1617 (1982); {\bf 45}, 637 (1984)], we separate the contributions of vacuum fluctuations and radiation reaction (source) field to the resonance interaction energy betw…
The effect of quantum vacuum on spin precession is investigated. The radiation reaction is obtained and the time of spin flip (up state to down state) or spontaneous decay, is calculated.
Several authors have used the Heisenberg picture to show that the atomic transitions, the stability of the ground state and the position-momentum commutation relation [x,p]=ih, can only be explained by introducing radiation reaction and vacuum electromagnetic fluctuation forces. Here we consider the simple case of a nonrelativistic charged harmonic oscillator, in one dimension, to investigate how to take into account the radiation reaction and vacuum fluctuation forces within the Schrodinger picture. We consider the effects of both classical zero-point and thermal electromagnetic vacuum fields…
We study, in the presence of an external electrostatic field, the interatomic interaction between two ground-state atoms coupled with vacuum electromagnetic fluctuations within the dipole coupling approximation based on the perturbation theory. We show that, up to the fourth order, the electrostatic-field-induced interatomic interaction is just the classical dipole-dipole interaction, which disagrees with the recent result from Fiscelli et al. [G. Fiscelli et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 124, 013604 (2020)]. However, to higher orders, there exist external-field-related quantum corrections to the indu…
We apply the DDC formalism [proposed by Dalibard, Dupont-Roc and Cohen-Tannoudji] to study the average rate of change of energy of two identical two-level atoms interacting with the vacuum massless scalar field in synchronized motion along stationary trajectories. By separating the contributions of vacuum fluctuations and atomic radiation reaction, we first show that for the two-atom system initially prepared in the factorizable eigenstates $|g_Ag_B\rangle$ and $|e_Ae_B\rangle$, where $g$ and $e$ represent the ground state and the excited state of a single atom respectively, both vacuum fluctu…
Violation of the action-reaction principle is shown to occur in the van der Waals interaction between two atoms, one of which is excited. It is accompanied by the transfer of linear momentum to the electromagnetic vacuum. The vacuum momentum results from the asymmetric interference of the virtual photons scattered off each atom along the interatomic direction, which is in itself a manifestation of the optical theorem. This momentum, of equal strength and opposite direction to the momentum gained by the two-atom system, is ultimately released through directional spontaneous emission. A quantita…
A system of two closely spaced atoms interacting through a vacuum electromagnetic field is considered. It is demonstrated that radiative decay in such a system resulting from photon exchange gives rise to a definite amount of information related to interatomic communication. Joint distributions of detection probabilities of atomic quanta and the corresponding amount of communication information are calculated.
We study the resonance interaction between two entangled identical atoms coupled to a quantized scalar field vacuum, and accelerating between two mirrors. We show how radiative processes of the two-atom entangled state can be manipulated by the atomic configuration undergoing noninertial motion. Incorporating the Heisenberg picture with symmetric operator ordering, the vacuum fluctuation and the self-reaction contributions are distinguished. We evaluate the resonance energy shift and the relaxation rate of energy of the two atom system from the self-reaction contribution in the Heisenberg equa…
By taking a Klein-Gordon field as the environment of an harmonic oscillator and using a new method for dealing with quantum dissipative systems (minimal coupling method), the quantum dynamics and radiation reaction for a quantum damped harmonic oscillator investigated. Applying perturbation method, some transition probabilities indicating the way energy flows between oscillator, reservoir and quantum vacuum, obtained
Dalibard, Dupont-Roc and Cohen-Tannoudji (J. Physique 43 (1982) 1617; 45 (1984) 637) used the Heisenberg picture to show that the atomic transitions, and the stability of the ground state, can only be explained by introducing radiation reaction and vacuum fluctuation forces. Here we consider the simple case of nonrelativistic charged harmonic oscillator, in one dimension, to investigate how to take into account the radiation reaction and vacuum fluctuation forces within the Schrodinger picture. We consider classical vacuum fields and large mass oscillator.
We generalize the formalism proposed by Dalibard, Dupont-Roc, and Cohen-Tannoudji [the DDC formalism] in the fourth order for two atoms in interaction with scalar fields in vacuum to a thermal bath at finite temperature $T$, and then calculate the interatomic interaction energy of two ground-state atoms separately in terms of the contributions of thermal fluctuations and the radiation reaction of the atoms and analyze in detail the thermal corrections to the van der Waals and Casimir-Polder interactions. We discover a particular region, i.e., $\sqrt[4]{λ^3β}\ll L\ll λ$ with $L$, $β$ and $λ$ de…
We consider a multilevel hydrogen atom in interaction with the quantum electromagnetic field and separately calculate the contributions of the vacuum fluctuation and radiation reaction to the rate of change of the mean atomic energy of the atom for uniform acceleration. It is found that the acceleration disturbs the vacuum fluctuations in such a way that the delicate balance between the contributions of vacuum fluctuation and radiation reaction that exists for inertial atoms is broken, so that the transitions to higher-lying states from ground state are possible even in vacuum. In contrast to …
The mean force exerted upon a perfect mirror moving in vacuum in a two dimensional spacetime has the same expression as the radiation reaction force computed in classical electron theory. It follows that unacceptable runaway solutions are predicted. We show that this instability problem does not appear when partially transmitting mirrors are studied. The mechanical impedance describing the mirror coupled to vacuum radiation pressure is computed explicitly; recoil is neglected. It is found to be a passive function, so that stability is ensured. This is connected to the fact that no energy can b…
We show a mechanism that projects a pair of neutral two-level atoms from an initially uncorrelated state to a maximally entangled state while they remain spacelike separated. The atoms begin both excited in a common electromagnetic vacuum, and the radiation is collected with a partial Bell-state analyzer. If the interaction time is short enough and a certain two-photon Bell state is detected after the interaction, a high degree of entanglement, even maximal, can be generated while one atom is outside the light cone of the other, for arbitrary large interatomic distances.
In this paper we dwell on three issues: 1) revisit the relation between vacuum fluctuations and radiation reaction in atom-field interactions, which began in the 70s and settled in the 90s with its resolution recorded in monographs; 2) the fluctuation-dissipation relation (FDR) of the system, pointing out the differences between that in linear response theory (LRT) assuming ultra-weak coupling between the system and the bath, and the FDR in an equilibrated final state, relaxed from the nonequilibrium evolution of an open quantum system; 3) quantum radiation from an atom interacting with a quan…
We study the spontaneous excitation of a uniformly accelerated two-level atom non-linearly coupled with vacuum Dirac field fluctuations using the formalism proposed by Dalibard, Dupont-Roc and Cohen-Tannoudji (DDC) and generalized to the present case in the current paper. We find that a cross term involving both vacuum fluctuations and radiation reaction appears, which is absent in the linear coupling cases such as an atom interacting with vacuum scalar or electromagnetic fluctuations. Furthermore, the contribution of this term actually dominates over that of radiation reaction. Thus, the mean…
Radiation from a mirror moving in vacuum electromagnetic fields is shown to vanish in the case of a uniformly accelerated motion. Such motions are related to conformal coordinate transformations, which preserve correlation functions characteristic of vacuum fluctuations. As a result, vacuum fluctuations remain invariant under reflection upon a uniformly accelerated mirror, which therefore does not radiate and experiences no radiation reaction force. Mechanical effects of vacuum fluctuations thus exhibit an invariance with respect to uniformly accelerated motions.
We study, in the multipolar coupling scheme, a uniformly accelerated multilevel hydrogen atom in interaction with the quantum electromagnetic field near a conducting boundary and separately calculate the contributions of the vacuum fluctuation and radiation reaction to the rate of change of the mean atomic energy. It is found that the perfect balance between the contributions of vacuum fluctuations and radiation reaction that ensures the stability of ground-state atoms is disturbed, making spontaneous transition of ground-state atoms to excited states possible in vacuum with a conducting bound…
We discuss different physical effects related to the uniform acceleration of atoms in vacuum, in the framework of quantum electrodynamics. We first investigate the van der Waals/Casimir-Polder dispersion and resonance interactions between two uniformly accelerated atoms in vacuum. We show that the atomic acceleration significantly affects the van der Waals force, yielding a different scaling of the interaction with the interatomic distance and an explicit time dependence of the interaction energy. We argue how these results could allow for an indirect detection of the Unruh effect through disp…
We apply the open systems concept and the influence functional formalism introduced in Paper I to establish a stochastic theory of relativistic moving spinless particles in a quantum scalar field. The stochastic regime resting between the quantum and semi-classical captures the statistical mechanical attributes of the full theory. Applying the particle-centric world-line quantization formulation to the quantum field theory of scalar QED we derive a time-dependent (scalar) Abraham-Lorentz-Dirac (ALD) equation and show that it is the correct semiclassical limit for nonlinear particle-field syste…
We study the resonance interaction between two uniformly accelerated identical atoms, one excited and the other in the ground state, prepared in a correlated (symmetric or antisymmetric) state and interacting with the scalar field or the electromagnetic field in the vacuum state. In this case (resonance interaction), the interatomic interaction is a second-order effect in the atom-field coupling. We separate the contributions of vacuum fluctuations and radiation reaction to the resonance energy shift of the system, and show that only radiation reaction contributes, while Unruh thermal fluctuat…
We calculate the third order susceptibility $χ^{(3)}$ of a pair of 2 level atoms which interact via the exchange of photons. QED corrections to second order in coupling to vacuum field modes yield collective two photon absorption resonances which can be observed in transmission spectroscopy of shaped broadband pulses. While some collective effects can be obtained by introducing an effective interatomic coupling using a quantum master equation, the predicted signals contain clear features that are missed by that level of theory and require a full diagrammatic QED treatment.
We consider the dispersion interaction between two ground-state hydrogen atoms, interacting with the quantum electromagnetic field in the vacuum state, in the presence of an external static electric field, both in the nonretarded and in the retarded Casimir-Polder regime. We show that the presence of the external field strongly modifies the dispersion interaction between the atoms, changing its space dependence. Moreover, we find that, for specific geometrical configurations of the two atoms with respect to the external field and/or the relative orientation of the fields acting on the two atom…
We investigate the resonance interaction energy between two uniformly accelerated identical atoms, interacting with the scalar field or the electromagnetic field in the vacuum state, in the reference frame coaccelerating with the atoms. We assume that one atom is excited and the other in the ground state, and that they are prepared in their correlated symmetric or antisymmetric state. Using perturbation theory, we separate, at the second order in the atom-field coupling, the contributions of vacuum fluctuations and radiation reaction field to the energy shift of the interacting system. We show…
This work continues the investigation of radiation phenomena from atom-field interactions, extending our earlier study of quantum radiation from a stationary atom's internal degree of freedom, modeled by a harmonic oscillator, to the emittance of classical radiation. By assuming that the atom interacts with a quantum scalar field initially in a coherent state, we show how a stochastic component of the internal dynamics of the atom arises from the vacuum fluctuations of the field, resulting in the emittance of quantum radiation, whose reaction induces quantum dissipation in the internal dynamic…
We study, in the paradigm of open quantum systems, the entanglement dynamics of two uniformly accelerated atoms with the same acceleration perpendicular to the separation. The two-atom system is treated as an open system coupled with a bath of fluctuating massless scalar fields in the Minkowski vacuum, and the master equation that governs its evolution is derived. It has been found that, for accelerated atoms with a nonvanishing separation, entanglement sudden death is a general feature when the initial state is entangled, while for those in a separable initial state, entanglement sudden birth…
We review different aspects of the atom-atom and atom-wall Casimir-Polder forces. We first discuss the role of a boundary condition on the interatomic Casimir-Polder potential between two ground-state atoms, and give a physically transparent interpretation of the results in terms of vacuum fluctuations and image atomic dipoles. We then discuss the known atom-wall Casimir-Polder force for ground- and excited-state atoms, using a different method which is also suited for extension to time-dependent situations. Finally, we consider the fluctuation of the Casimir-Polder force between a ground-stat…
We study the spontaneous de-excitation and excitation of accelerated atoms on arbitrary stationary trajectories (``generalized Unruh effect''). We consider the effects of vacuum fluctuations and radiation reaction separately. We show that radiation reaction is generally not altered by stationary acceleration, whereas the contribution of vacuum fluctuations differs for all stationary accelerated trajectories from its inertial value. Spontaneous excitation from the ground state occurs for all { accelerated stationary} trajectories and is therefore the ``normal case''. We furthermore show that th…
