We generalize the formalism proposed by Dalibard, Dupont-Roc, and Cohen-Tannoudji [the DDC formalism] in the fourth order for two atoms in interaction with scalar fields in vacuum to a thermal bath at finite temperature $T$, and then calculate the interatomic interaction energy of two ground-state atoms separately in terms of the contributions of thermal fluctuations and the radiation reaction of the atoms and analyze in detail the thermal corrections to the van der Waals and Casimir-Polder interactions. We discover a particular region, i.e., $\sqrt[4]{λ^3β}\ll L\ll λ$ with $L$, $β$ and $λ$ denoting the interatomic separation, the wavelength of thermal photons and the transition wavelength of the atoms respectively, where the thermal corrections remarkably render the van der Waals force, which is usually attractive, repulsive, leading to an interesting crossover phenomenon of the interatomic interaction from attractive to repulsive as the temperature increases. We also find that the thermal corrections cause significant changes to the Casimir-Polder force when the temperature is sufficiently high, resulting in an attractive force proportional to $TL^{-3}$ in the $λ\llβ\ll L$ region, and a force which can be either attractive or repulsive and even vanishing in the $ β\llλ\ll L$ region depending on the interatomic separation.
In this paper we dwell on three issues: 1) revisit the relation between vacuum fluctuations and radiation reaction in atom-field interactions, which began in the 70s and settled in the 90s with its resolution recorded in monographs; 2) the fluctuation-dissipation relation (FDR) of the system, pointing out the differences between that in linear response theory (LRT) assuming ultra-weak coupling between the system and the bath, and the FDR in an equilibrated final state, relaxed from the nonequilibrium evolution of an open quantum system; 3) quantum radiation from an atom interacting with a quan…
In this paper, we analyze the effects of thermal fluctuations on a STU black hole. We observe that these thermal fluctuations can affect the stability of a STU black hole. We will also analyze the effects of these thermal fluctuations on the thermodynamic of STU black hole. Furthermore, in the Jacobson formalism such a modification will produce a deformation of the geometry of the STU black hole. Hence, we use the AdS/CFT correspondence to analyze the effect of such a deformation on the dual quark-gluon plasma. So, we explicitly analyze the effect of thermal fluctuations on the shear viscosity…
We consider a multilevel hydrogen atom in interaction with the quantum electromagnetic field and separately calculate the contributions of the vacuum fluctuation and radiation reaction to the rate of change of the mean atomic energy of the atom for uniform acceleration. It is found that the acceleration disturbs the vacuum fluctuations in such a way that the delicate balance between the contributions of vacuum fluctuation and radiation reaction that exists for inertial atoms is broken, so that the transitions to higher-lying states from ground state are possible even in vacuum. In contrast to …
Recent work has shown that the stress tensor components, such as energy density or pressure, of a quantum field can be subject to large vacuum fluctuations. The energy density or pressure must be averaged in time before the fluctuations can be finite, and the probability of a large fluctuation depends upon the details of the averaging and can be much larger than that predicted by a Gaussian distribution. This paper explores vacuum radiation pressure fluctuation on Rydberg atoms and their possible observable effects. The excitation and de-excitation of a Rydberg atom provide an explicit model f…
We study the effects of light-cone fluctuations on the renormalized zero-point energy associated with a free massless scalar field in the presence of boundaries. In order to simulate light-cone fluctuations we introduce a space-time dependent random coefficient in the Klein-Gordon operator. We assume that the field is defined in a domain with one confined direction. For simplicity, we choose the symmetric case of two parallel plates separated by a distance $a$. The correction to the renormalized vacuum energy density between the plates goes as $1/a^{8}$ instead of the usual $1/a^{4}$ dependenc…
We study the spontaneous excitation of a uniformly accelerated two-level atom non-linearly coupled with vacuum Dirac field fluctuations using the formalism proposed by Dalibard, Dupont-Roc and Cohen-Tannoudji (DDC) and generalized to the present case in the current paper. We find that a cross term involving both vacuum fluctuations and radiation reaction appears, which is absent in the linear coupling cases such as an atom interacting with vacuum scalar or electromagnetic fluctuations. Furthermore, the contribution of this term actually dominates over that of radiation reaction. Thus, the mean…
We investigate loop corrections to the primordial fluctuations in the single-field inflationary paradigm from spectator fields that experience a smooth transition of their vacuum expectation values. We show that when the phase transition involves a classical evolution effectively driven by a negative mass term from the potential, important corrections to the curvature perturbation can be generated by field perturbations that are frozen outside the horizon by the time of the phase transition, yet the correction to tensor perturbation is naturally suppressed by the spatial derivative couplings b…
A direct consequence of quantization of gravity would be quantum gravitational vacuum fluctuations which induce quadrupole moments in gravitationally polarizable atoms. In this paper, we study the spontaneous excitation of a gravitationally polarizable atom with a uniform acceleration $a$ in interaction with a bath of fluctuating quantum gravitational fields in vacuum, and compare the result with that of a static one in a thermal bath of gravitons at the Unruh temperature. We find that, under the fluctuations of spacetime itself, transitions to higher-lying excited states from the ground state…
The use of atomic decay rates as a probe of sub-vacuum phenomena will be studied. Because electromagnetic vacuum fluctuations are essential for radiative decay of excited atomic states, decay rates can serve as a measure of the suppression of vacuum fluctuation in non-classical states, such as squeezed vacuum states. In such states the renormalized expectation value of the square of the electric field or the energy density can be periodically negative, representing suppression of vacuum fluctuations. We explore the extent to which atomic decays can be used to measure the mean squared electric …
In present paper, by using the generalized DDC formalism, we investigate the spontaneous excitation of an static atom interacting with electromagnetic vacuum fluctuations outside a EGB black hole in $d$-dimensions. We find that spontaneous excitation does not occur in Boulware vacuum. The Gauss-Bonnet term has no effect on the stability of the atom. Finally, we discuss the contribution of the coupling constant and dimensional factor to the results in three different kinds of spacetime.
We study entropy corrections due to thermal fluctuations for asymptotically AdS black holes in the grand canonical ensemble. To leading order, these can be expressed in terms of the black hole response coefficients via fluctuation moments. We also analyze entropy corrections due to mass and charge fluctuations of R-charged black holes, and our results indicate an universality in the logarithmic corrections to charged AdS black hole entropy in various dimensions.
Quantum fluctuations of an inflaton field, slow-rolling during inflation are coupled to metric fluctuations. In conventional four dimensional cosmology one can calculate the effect of scalar metric perturbations as slow-roll corrections to the evolution of a massless free field in de Sitter spacetime. This gives the well-known first-order corrections to the field perturbations after horizon-exit. If inflaton fluctuations on a four dimensional brane embedded in a five dimensional bulk spacetime are studied to first-order in slow-roll then we recover the usual conserved curvature perturbation on…
We study how fluctuations of the black hole geometry affect the properties of Hawking radiation. Even though we treat the fluctuations classically, we believe that the results so obtained indicate what might be the effects induced by quantum fluctuations in a self consistent treatment. To characterize the fluctuations, we use the model introduced by York in which they are described by an advanced Vaidya metric with a fluctuating mass. Under the assumption of spherical symmetry, we solve the equation of null outgoing rays. Then, by neglecting the greybody factor, we calculate the late time corr…
The maximal acceleration corrections to the Lamb shift of one--electron atoms are calculated starting from the Dirac equation and splitting the spinor into large and small components. The results depend on $Z^8$ and a cut-off $Λ$. Sizeable values are obtained even at Z=1 for $Λ\sim a_0/2$, where $a_0$ is the Bohr radius. These values are compatible with theoretical and experimental results.
We consider an atom in interaction with a massless scalar quantum field. We discuss the structure of the rate of variation of the atomic energy for an arbitrary stationary motion of the atom through the quantum vacuum. Our main intention is to identify and to analyze quantitatively the distinct contributions of vacuum fluctuations and radiation reaction to the spontaneous excitation of a uniformly accelerated atom in its ground state. This gives an understanding of the role of the different physical processes underlying the Unruh effect. The atom's evolution into equilibrium and the Einstein c…
The fluctuation determinant which determines the preexponential factor of the transition rate for minimal bubbles is computed for the electroweak theory with $\sin Θ_W = 0$. As the basic action we use the three-dimensional high-temperature action including, besides temperature dependent masses, the $T Φ^3$ one-loop contribution which makes the phase transition first order. The results show that this contribution (which has then to be subtracted from the exact result) gives the dominant contribution to the one-loop effective action. The remaining correction is of the order of, but in general la…
We revisit the calculation of quantum-gravitational corrections to the power spectra of scalar and tensor perturbations in the Born-Oppenheimer approach to quantum gravity. We focus on the issue of the definition of the inner product of the theory and the unitarity of the corrections to the dynamics of the cosmological perturbations. We argue that the correction terms are unitary, provided the inner product is defined in a suitable way, which can be related to a notion of gauge-fixing the time variable and the use of conditional probabilities in quantum cosmology. We compare the corrections ob…
In this paper, we will analyze the effects of thermal fluctuations on the stability of a black Saturn. The entropy of the black Saturn will get corrected due to these thermal fluctuations. We will demonstrate that the correction term generated by these thermal fluctuations is a logarithmic term. Then we will use this corrected value of the entropy to obtain bounds for various parameters of the black Saturn. We will also analyze the thermodynamical stability of the black Saturn in presence of thermal fluctuations, using this corrected value of the entropy.
Quantum fluctuation effects have an irrefutable role in high energy physics. Such fluctuation can be often regarded as a correction of infrared (IR) limit. In this paper, the effects of the first-order correction of entropy, caused by thermal fluctuation, on the thermodynamics of charged black holes in gravity's rainbow will be discussed. It will be shown that such correction has profound contributions to high energy limit of thermodynamical quantities, stability conditions of the black holes and interestingly has no effect on thermodynamical phase transitions. The coupling between gravity's r…
It is shown that the rate of corrections to the hydrogen atom and harmonic oscillator due to profound quantum-gravitational effect of space-time dimension running/reduction coincides well with those obtained by means of the minimum-length deformed quantum mechanics. The rate of corrections are pretty much the same within the accuracy by which we can judge the quantum-gravitational corrections at all. Such a convergence of results makes the concept of space-time dimension running more appreciable. As a remarkable distinction, the energy shift due to dimension reduction has the opposite sign as …
In this paper, we consider the first order correction of the entropy and temperature in a charged black hole with a scalar field. Here, we apply such correction for the different cases of black holes. These corrections are due to the thermal fluctuations of statistical physics. Also, we take advantage of such corrections and study the $ P - V $ critically and phase transition. Also, we investigate the effect of correction on the critical point and stability of the system. We obtain modified thermodynamics quantities and find effects of thermal fluctuations in the stability of the black hole. W…
In the present paper we discuss how trans-Planckian physics affects inflationary vacuum fluctuations and primordial density perturbations. The trans-Planckian problem during inflation has been widely discussed in literature, but it is still under debate. We reconsider this problem by using the two-point correlation function of the non-minimally coupled scalar fields and constructing the effective potential with the adiabatic (WKB) regularization or approximation. First, we clearly show that the cut-off divergence of the quantum fluctuations does not drastically change during inflation under re…
We determine the fermionic corrections to the nucleation rate of bubbles at the electroweak phase transition. The fermion determinant is evaluated exactly and by using the gradient expansion. The gradient expansion is found to be a reliable approximation and is used to extrapolate to the large values of $ν_n = (2n+1)πT$ needed in the Matsubara sum. The contribution to effective action is found to be negative and to be given, essentially, by the gradient terms, the finite part of the wave function renormalization. Only the top quark contribution is evaluated, it is of the same order as the Higg…
Precise cosmological data from WMAP and forthcoming CMB experiments motivate the study of the quantum corrections to the slowroll inflationary parameters. We find the quantum (loop) corrections to the equations of motion of the classical inflaton, its quantum fluctuations and the Friedmann equation in general single field slow roll inflation. We implement a renormalized effective field theory EFT approach based on an expansion in (H/M_{Pl})^2 and slow roll parameters epsilon_V,eta_V,sigma_V, xi_V.We find that the leading order quantum corrections to the inflaton effective potential and its equat…
