Dalibard, Dupont-Roc and Cohen-Tannoudji (J. Physique 43 (1982) 1617; 45 (1984) 637) used the Heisenberg picture to show that the atomic transitions, and the stability of the ground state, can only be explained by introducing radiation reaction and vacuum fluctuation forces. Here we consider the simple case of nonrelativistic charged harmonic oscillator, in one dimension, to investigate how to take into account the radiation reaction and vacuum fluctuation forces within the Schrodinger picture. We consider classical vacuum fields and large mass oscillator.

The Heisenberg versus the Schrodinger picture in quantum field theory

The Heisenberg picture and Schrodinger picture are supposed to be equivalent representations of quantum mechanics. However this idea has been challenged by P.A.M. Dirac. Also, it has been recently shown by A. J. Faria et al that this is not necessarily the case. In this article a simple problem will be worked out in quantum field theory in which the Heisenberg picture and Schrodinger picture give different results.

Schrodinger picture analysis of the beam splitter: an application of the Janszky representation

The Janszky representation constructs quantum states of a field mode as a superposition of coherent states on a line in the complex plane. We show that this provides a natural Schrödinger picture description of the interference between a pair of modes at a beam splitter.

Comment on "Critical assessment of the Schrodinger picture of quantum mechanics"

Recently, Faria et al [Phys. Lett. A 305 (2002) 322] discussed an example in which the Heisenberg and the Schrodinger pictures of quantum mechanics gave different results. We identify the mistake in their reasoning and conclude that the example they discussed does not support the inequivalence of these two pictures.

Limitations on the use of the Heisenberg picture in quantum optics

The Schrodinger and Heisenberg pictures are equivalent formulations of quantum mechanics. Here we use the Schrodinger picture to calculate the decoherence that occurs when an optical Schrodinger cat state is passed through a beam splitter. We find that an exponentially large amount of decoherence can occur even when there is a negligible change in the quadrature operator x(t) in the Heisenberg picture. Damping Effect of Electromagnetic Radiation and Time-Dependent Schrodinger Equation

The inexactness of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation of a charged particle in an external electromagnetic field is discussed in terms of the damping effect of the radiation. A possible improvement is to add a nonlinear term representing this effect to the linear Schrödinger equation. Conditions for the nonlinear term are investigated and it is demonstrated that the obtained nonlinear Schrödinger equation may present state evolutions similar to the wave-function reduction and transitions between stationary states.

Model of a relativistic oscillator in a generalized Schrödinger picture

In a generalized Schrödinger picture, we consider the motion of a relativistic particle in an external field (like in the case of a harmonic oscillator). In this picture the analogs of the Schrödinger operators of the particle are independent of both the time and the space coordinates. These operators induce operators which are related to Killing vectors of the Anti de Sitter (AdS) space. We also consider the nonrelativistic limit.

Mapping the Schrodinger picture of open quantum dynamics

For systems described by finite matrices, an affine form is developed for the maps that describe evolution of density matrices for a quantum system that interacts with another. On the connection between the Schrodinger and the Heisenberg pictures for unbounded operators

It is well known that the unboundedness of operators in Hilbert space entails domain troubles. It is also well known that most domain troubles can be surmounted by extending the Hilbert space to a rigged Hilbert space. In this note, we point out another of such troubles, namely the correspondence between the Schrodinger and the Heisenberg pictures for unbounded operators, and sketch the solution of this problem within the rigged Hilbert space.

The Schrödinger equation, the zero-point electromagnetic radiation and the photoelectric effect

A Schrödinger type equation for a mathematical probability amplitude ψ(x,t), is derived from the generalized phase space Liouville equation valid for the motion of a microscopic particle, with mass M, moving in a potential V(x). Quantum Fields at Any Time

The canonical quantum theory of a free field using arbitrary foliations of a flat two-dimensional spacetime is investigated. It is shown that dynamical evolution along arbitrary spacelike foliations is unitarily implemented on the same Fock space as that associated with inertial foliations. It follows that the Schrodinger picture exists for arbitrary foliations as a unitary image of the Heisenberg picture for the theory. Schrödinger field theory in curved spacetime: In-In formalism and three-point function for inflationary background

We review the Schrödinger picture of field theory in curved spacetime and using this formalism, the power spectrum of massive non-interacting, minimally coupled scalars in a fixed de Sitter background is obtained. To calculate the N-point function in Schrödinger field theory, the "in-in" formalism is extended in the Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) universe. We compute the three-point function for primordial scalar field fluctuation in the single field inflation by this in-in formalism. The results are the same as the three-point function in the Heisenberg picture.

Nonlinear Quantum Wave Equation of Radiation Electron and Dissipative Systems

As well known, an electron will produce radiative reaction force when the electron emits electromagnetism radiation. Transfer formalism for quantum optics problems

Consistent quantum formalism based on the localized basis of the Wannirer functions in Heisenberg and Schrodinger pictures to describe propagation of electromagnetic field in a three dimensional media including diffraction is presented. N-Level System Interacting with Single Radiation Mode and Multi Cat States of Schrodinger in the Strong Coupling Regime

In this paper we consider some (generalized) models which deal with n--level atom interacting with a single radiation mode and study a general structure of Rabi floppings of these generalized ones in the strong coupling regime. Cascading and Local-Field Effects in Non-Linear Optics Revisited; A Quantum-Field Picture Based on Exchange of Photons

The semi-classical theory of radiation-matter coupling misses local-field effects that may alter the pulse time-ordering and cascading that leads to the generation of new signals. These are then introduced macroscopically by solving Maxwell's equations. This procedure is convenient and intuitive but ad hoc. A model of the two-dimensional quantum harmonic oscillator in an $AdS_3$ background

In this paper we study a model of the two-dimensional quantum harmonic oscillator in a 3-dimensional anti-de Sitter background. We use a generalized Schrödinger picture in which the analogs of the Schrödinger operators of the particle are independent of both the time and the space coordinates in different representations. The spacetime independent operators of the particle induce the Lie algebra of Killing vector fields of the $AdS_3$ spacetime. In this picture, we have a metamorphosis of the Heisenberg's uncertainty relations.
