We consider continuous-time random walks on a random locally finite subset of $\mathbb{R}^d$ with random symmetric jump probability rates. The jump range can be unbounded. We assume some second--moment conditions and that the above randomness is left invariant by the action of the group $\mathbb{G}=\mathbb{R}^d$ or $\mathbb{G}=\mathbb{Z}^d$. We then add a site-exclusion interaction, thus making the particle system a simple exclusion process. We show that, for almost all environments, under diffusive space-time rescaling the system exhibits a hydrodynamic limit in path space. The hydrodynamic equation is non-random and governed by the effective homogenized matrix $D$ of the single random walk, which can be degenerate. The above result covers a very large family of models including e.g. simple exclusion processes built from random conductance models on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ and on crystal lattices (possibly with long conductances), Mott variable range hopping, simple random walks on Delaunay triangulations, random walks on supercritical percolation clusters.
We consider random walks on marked simple point processes with symmetric jump rates and unbounded jump range. We prove homogenization properties of the associated Markov generators. As an application, we derive the hydrodynamic limit of the simple exclusion process given by multiple random walks as above, with hard-core interaction, on a marked Poisson point process. The above results cover Mott variable range hopping, which is a fundamental mechanism of phonon-induced electron conduction in amorphous solids as doped semiconductors. Our techniques, based on an extension of two-scale convergenc…
We consider a stationary and ergodic random field {ω(b)} parameterized by the family of bonds b in Z^d, d>1. The random variable ω(b) is thought of as the conductance of bond b and it ranges in a finite interval [0,c_0]. Assuming that the set of bonds with positive conductance has a unique infinite cluster C, we prove homogenization results for the random walk among random conductances on C. As a byproduct, applying the general criterion of \cite{F} leading to the hydrodynamic limit of exclusion processes with bond-dependent transition rates, for almost all realizations of the environment we p…
In \cite{J} M. Jara has presented a method, reducing the proof of the hydrodynamic limit of symmetric exclusion processes to an homogenization problem, as unified approach to recent works on the field as \cite{N}, \cite{F1}, \cite{F2} and \cite{FJL}. Although not stated in \cite{J}, the reduction of the hydrodynamic limit to an homogenization problem was already obtained (in a different way) in \cite{N}, \cite{F1}. This alternative and very simple relation between the two problems goes back to an idea of K.\ Nagy \cite{N}, is stated in \cite{F1}[Section B] for exclusion processes on $\bbZ^d$ a…
In this paper, we introduce a random environment for the exclusion process in $\mathbb{Z}^d$ obtained by assigning a maximal occupancy to each site. This maximal occupancy is allowed to randomly vary among sites, and partial exclusion occurs. Under the assumption of ergodicity under translation and uniform ellipticity of the environment, we derive a quenched hydrodynamic limit in path space by strengthening the mild solution approach initiated in [39] and [21]. To this purpose, we prove, employing the technology developed for the random conductance model, a homogenization result in the form of…
We study a two-component asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP) that is equivalent to the ASEP with second-class particles. We prove self-duality with respect to a family of duality functions which are shown to arise from the reversible measures of the process and the symmetry of the generator under the quantum algebra $U_q[\mathfrak{gl}_3]$. We construct all invariant measures in explicit form and discuss some of their properties. We also prove a sum rule for the duality functions.
We study a new process, which we call ASEP$(q,j)$, where particles move asymmetrically on a one-dimensional integer lattice with a bias determined by $q\in (0,1)$ and where at most $2j\in\mathbb{N}$ particles per site are allowed. The process is constructed from a $(2j+1)$-dimensional representation of a quantum Hamiltonian with $U_q(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$ invariance by applying a suitable ground-state transformation. After showing basic properties of the process ASEP$(q,j)$, we prove self-duality with several self-duality functions constructed from the symmetries of the quantum Hamiltonian. By mak…
We consider random walks on the support of a random purely atomic measure on $\mathbb{R}^d$ with random jump probability rates. The jump range can be unbounded. The purely atomic measure is reversible for the random walk and stationary for the action of the group $\mathbb{G}=\mathbb{R}^d$ or $\mathbb{G}=\mathbb{Z}^d$. By combining two-scale convergence and Palm theory for $\mathbb{G}$-stationary random measures and by developing a cut-off procedure, under suitable second moment conditions we prove for almost all environments the homogenization for the massive Poisson equation of the associated…
We introduce a new method, which we call stochastic fusion, which takes an exclusion process and constructs an interacting particle systems in which more than one particle may occupy a lattice site. The construction only requires the existence of stationary measures of the original exclusion process on a finite lattice. If the original exclusion process satisfies Markov duality on a finite lattice, then the construction produces Markov duality functions (for some initial conditions) for the fused exclusion process. The stochastic fusion construction is based off of the Rogers-Pitman intertwini…
We prove a comparison inequality between a system of independent random walkers and a system of random walkers which either interact by attracting each other -- a process which we call here the symmetric inclusion process (SIP) -- or repel each other -- a generalized version of the well-known symmetric exclusion process. As an application, new correlation inequalities are obtained for the SIP, as well as for some interacting diffusions which are used as models of heat conduction, -- the so-called Brownian momentum process, and the Brownian energy process. These inequalities are counterparts of…
We prove a law of large numbers for the empirical density of one-dimensional, boundary driven, symmetric exclusion processes with different types of non-reversible dynamics at the boundary. The proofs rely on duality techniques.
In earlier work (arXiv:1707.04927) the authors obtained formulas for the probability in the asymmetric simple exclusion process that at time $t$ a particle is at site $x$ and is the beginning of a block of $L$ consecutive particles. Here we consider asymptotics. Specifically, for the KPZ regime with step initial condition, we determine the conditional probability (asymptotically as $t\rightarrow\infty$) that a particle is the beginning of an $L$-block, given that it is at site $x$ at time $t$. Using duality between occupied and unoccupied sites we obtain the analogous result for a gap of $G$ u…
For a series of Markov processes we prove stochastic duality relations with duality functions given by orthogonal polynomials. This means that expectations with respect to the original process (which evolves the variable of the orthogonal polynomial) can be studied via expectations with respect to the dual process (which evolves the index of the polynomial). The set of processes include interacting particle systems, such as the exclusion process, the inclusion process and independent random walkers, as well as interacting diffusions and redistribution models of Kipnis-Marchioro-Presutti type. …
We introduce the mathematical theory of the particle systems that interact via permutations, where the transition rates are assigned not to the jumps from a site to a site, but to the permutations themselves. This permutation processes can be viewed as a generalization of the symmetric exclusion processes, where particles interact via transpositions. The duality and coupling techniques for the processes are described, the needed conditions for them to apply are established. The stationary distributions of the permutation processes are explored for translation invariant cases.
We study the $n$-component priority asymmetric simple exclusion process ($n$-ASEP) with reflecting boundaries. We obtain all invariant measures in explicit form and prove reversibility. Using the symmetry of the generator of the process under the quantum algebra $U_q[\mathfrak{gl}(n+1)]$ we construct duality functions with respect to which the $n$-ASEP is self-dual, both for the finite and the infinite integer lattice. For the $n$-ASEP on the infinite lattice we use self-duality to derive in explicit form the time evolution of a family of measures with $K$ shocks in terms of the transition pro…
We study the problem of lateral diffusion on a static, quasi-planar surface generated by a stationary, ergodic random field possessing rapid small-scale spatial fluctuations. The aim is to study the effective behaviour of a particle undergoing Brownian motion on the surface viewed as a projection on the underlying plane. By formulating the problem as a diffusion in a random medium, we are able to use known results from the theory of stochastic homogenization of SDEs to show that, in the limit of small scale fluctuations, the diffusion process behaves quantitatively like a Brownian motion with …
We present a new method for obtaining duality functions in multi-species asymmetric exclusion processes (mASEP), from solutions of the deformed Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov equations. Our method reproduces, as a special case, duality functions for the self-dual single species ASEP on the integer lattice.
We study a class of interacting particle systems with asymmetric interaction showing a self-duality property. The class includes the ASEP($q,θ$), asymmetric exclusion process, with a repulsive interaction, allowing up to $θ\in \mathbb{N}$ particles in each site, and the ASIP$(q,θ)$, $θ\in \mathbb{R}^+$, asymmetric inclusion process, that is its attractive counterpart. We extend to the asymmetric setting the investigation of orthogonal duality properties done in [8] for symmetric processes. The analysis leads to multivariate $q-$analogues of Krawtchouk polynomials and Meixner polynomials as ort…
We introduce new integrable exclusion and zero-range processes on the one-dimensional lattice that generalize the $q$-Hahn TASEP and the $q$-Hahn Boson (zero-range) process introduced in [Pov13] and further studied in [Cor14], by allowing jumps in both directions. Owing to a Markov duality, we prove moment formulas for the locations of particles in the exclusion process. This leads to a Fredholm determinant formula that characterizes the distribution of the location of any particle. We show that the model-dependent constants that arise in the limit theorems predicted by the KPZ scaling theory …
We consider first-passage percolation with positive, stationary-ergodic weights on the square lattice $\mathbb{Z}^d$. Let $T(x)$ be the first-passage time from the origin to a point $x$ in $\mathbb{Z}^d$. The convergence of the scaled first-passage time $T([nx])/n$ to the time-constant as $n$ tends to infinity can be viewed as a problem of homogenization for a discrete Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) equation. By borrowing several tools from the continuum theory of stochastic homogenization for HJB equations, we derive an exact variational formula for the time-constant. We then construct an expl…
We study two generalizations of the asymmetric simple exclusion process with two types of particles. Particles of type 1 can jump over particles of type 2, while particles of type 2 can only influence the jump rates of particles of type 1. We prove that the processes are self-dual and explicitly write the duality function. As an application, an expression for the r-th moment of the exponentiated current is written in terms of r-particle evolution. The construction and proofs of duality are accomplished using symmetry of the quantum groups $U_q(\mathfrak{gl}_3)$ and $U_q(\mathfrak{sp}_4)$, with…

In the context of Markov processes, both in discrete and continuous setting, we show a general relation between duality functions and symmetries of the generator. If the generator can be written in the form of a Hamiltonian of a quantum spin system, then the "hidden" symmetries are easily derived. We illustrate our approach in processes of symmetric exclusion type, in which the symmetry is of SU(2) type, as well as for the Kipnis-Marchioro-Presutti (KMP) model for which we unveil its SU(1,1) symmetry. The KMP model is in turn an instantaneous thermalization limit of the energy process associat…
We study three classes of continuous time Markov processes (inclusion process, exclusion process, independent walkers) and a family of interacting diffusions (Brownian energy process). For each model we define a boundary driven process which is obtained by placing the system in contact with proper reservoirs, working at different particles densities or different temperatures. We show that all the models are exactly solvable by duality, using a dual process with absorbing boundaries. The solution does also apply to the so-called thermalization limit in which particles or energy is instantaneous…
We find all factorized duality functions for a class of interacting particle systems. The functions we recover are self-duality functions for interacting particle systems such as zero-range processes, symmetric inclusion and exclusion processes, as well as duality and self-duality functions for their continuous counterparts. The approach is based on, firstly, a general relation between factorized duality functions and stationary product measures and, secondly, an intertwining relation provided by generating functions. For the interacting particle systems, these self-duality and duality functio…
We study self-duality for interacting particle systems, where the particles move as continuous time random walkers having either exclusion interaction or inclusion interaction. We show that orthogonal self-dualities arise from unitary symmetries of the Markov generator. For these symmetries we provide two equivalent expressions that are related by the Baker-Campbell-Hausdorff formula. The first expression is the exponential of an anti Hermitian operator and thus is unitary by inspection; the second expression is factorized into three terms and is proved to be unitary by using generating functi…
We consider consistent particle systems, which include independent random walkers, the symmetric exclusion and inclusion processes, as well as the dual of the KMP model. Consistent systems are such that the distribution obtained by first evolving $n$ particles and then removing a particle at random is the same as the one given by a random removal of a particle at the initial time followed by evolution of the remaining $n-1$ particles. In this paper we discuss two main results. Firstly, we show that, for reversible systems, the property of consistency is equivalent to self-duality, thus obtaini…
We consider two particles performing continuous-time nearest neighbor random walk on $\mathbb Z$ and interacting with each other when they are at neighboring positions. Typical examples are two particles in the partial exclusion process or in the inclusion process. We provide an exact formula for the Laplace-Fourier transform of the transition probabilities of the two-particle dynamics. From this we derive a general scaling limit result, which shows that the possible scaling limits are coalescing Brownian motions, reflected Brownian motions, and sticky Brownian motions. In particle systems wit…
We consider the symmetric simple exclusion process in $\mathbb Z^d$ with quenched bounded dynamic random conductances and prove its hydrodynamic limit in path space. The main tool is the connection, due to the self-duality of the process, between the invariance principle for single particles starting from all points and the macroscopic behavior of the density field. While the hydrodynamic limit at fixed macroscopic times is obtained via a generalization to the time-inhomogeneous context of the strategy introduced in \cite{nagy_symmetric_2002}, in order to prove tightness for the sequence of em…
We consider hydrodynamic limits of interacting particles systems with open boundaries, where the exterior parameters change in a time scale slower than the typical relaxation time scale. The limit deterministic profiles evolve quasi-statically. These limits define rigorously the thermodynamic quasi static transformations also for transition between non-equilibrium stationary states. We study first the case of the symmetric simple exclusion, where duality can be used, and then we use relative entropy methods to extend to other models like zero range systems. Finally we consider a chain of anhar…
In this paper we study intermittency for the parabolic Anderson equation $\partial u/\partial t=κΔu+γξu$ with $u:\mathbb{Z}^d\times[0,\infty)\to\mathbb{R}$, where $κ\in[0,\infty)$ is the diffusion constant, $Δ$ is the discrete Laplacian, $γ\in(0,\infty)$ is the coupling constant, and $ξ:\mathbb{Z}^d\times[0,\infty)\to\mathbb{R}$ is a space--time random medium. The solution of this equation describes the evolution of a ``reactant'' $u$ under the influence of a ``catalyst'' $ξ$. We focus on the case where $ξ$ is the voter model with opinions 0 and 1 that are updated according to a random walk tr…
