This paper addresses the problem of approximating a function of bounded variation from its scattered data. Radial basis function(RBF) interpolation methods are known to approximate only functions in their native spaces, and to date, there has been no known proof that they can approximate functions outside the native space associated with the particular RBF being used. In this paper, we describe a scattered data interpolation method which can approximate any function of bounded variation from its scattered data as the data points grow dense. As the class of functions of bounded variation is a much wider class than the native spaces of the RBF, this method provides a crucial advantage over RBF interpolation methods.
We discuss a pointwise numerical differentiation formula on multivariate scattered data, based on the coefficients of local polynomial interpolation at Discrete Leja Points, written in Taylor's formula monomial basis. Error bounds for the approximation of partial derivatives of any order compatible with the function regularity are provided, as well as sensitivity estimates to functional perturbations, in terms of the inverse Vandermonde coefficients that are active in the differentiation process. Several numerical tests are presented showing the accuracy of the approximation.
In this paper we propose a method for the approximation of high-dimensional functions over finite intervals with respect to complete orthonormal systems of polynomials. An important tool for this is the multivariate classical analysis of variance (ANOVA) decomposition. For functions with a low-dimensional structure, i.e., a low superposition dimension, we are able to achieve a reconstruction from scattered data and simultaneously understand relationships between different variables.
We compare a recently proposed multivariate spline based on mixed partial derivatives with two other standard splines for the scattered data smoothing problem. The splines are defined as the minimiser of a penalised least squares functional. The penalties are based on partial differentiation operators, and are integrated using the finite element method. We compare three methods to two problems: to remove the mixture of Gaussian and impulsive noise from an image, and to recover a continuous function from a set of noisy observations.
The recovery of multivariate functions and estimating their integrals from finitely many samples is one of the central tasks in modern approximation theory. Marcinkiewicz--Zygmund inequalities provide answers to both the recovery and the quadrature aspect. In this paper, we put ourselves on the $q$-dimensional sphere $\mathbb{S}^q$, and investigate how well continuous $L_p$-norms of polynomials $f$ of maximum degree $n$ on the sphere $\mathbb{S}^q$ can be discretized by positively weighted $L_p$-sum of finitely many samples, and discuss the relationship between the offset between the continuou…
Spherical Gauss-Laguerre (SGL) basis functions, i. e., normalized functions of the type $L_{n-l-1}^{(l + 1/2)}(r^2) r^l Y_{lm}(\vartheta,φ)$, $|m| \leq l < n \in \mathbb{N}$, $L_{n-l-1}^{(l + 1/2)}$ being a generalized Laguerre polynomial, $Y_{lm}$ a spherical harmonic, constitute an orthonormal polynomial basis of the space $L^2$ on $\mathbb{R}^3$ with radial Gaussian (multivariate Hermite) weight $\exp(-r^2)$. We have recently described fast Fourier transforms for the SGL basis functions based on an exact quadrature formula with certain grid points in $\mathbb{R}^3$. In this paper, we presen…
In this paper we propose an approximation method for high-dimensional $1$-periodic functions based on the multivariate ANOVA decomposition. We provide an analysis on the classical ANOVA decomposition on the torus and prove some important properties such as the inheritance of smoothness for Sobolev type spaces and the weighted Wiener algebra. We exploit special kinds of sparsity in the ANOVA decomposition with the aim to approximate a function in a scattered data or black-box approximation scenario. This method allows us to simultaneously achieve an importance ranking on dimensions and dimensio…
In this paper, we present a method for denoising and reconstruction of low-dimensional manifold in high-dimensional space. We suggest a multidimensional extension of the Locally Optimal Projection algorithm which was introduced by Lipman et al. in 2007 for surface reconstruction in 3D. The method bypasses the curse of dimensionality and avoids the need for carrying out dimensional reduction. It is based on a non-convex optimization problem, which leverages a generalization of the outlier robust L1-median to higher dimensions while generating noise-free quasi-uniformly distributed points recons…
A Radial Basis Function Generated Finite-Differences (RBF-FD) inspired technique for evaluating definite integrals over bounded volumes that have smooth boundaries in three dimensions is described. A key aspect of this approach is that it allows the user to approximate the value of the integral without explicit knowledge of an expression for the boundary surface. Instead, a tesselation of the node set is utilized to inform the algorithm of the domain geometry. Further, the method applies to node sets featuring spatially varying density, facilitating its use in Applied Mathematics, Mathematical…
We obtain the spline recovery method on a $d$-dimensional simplex $T$ that uses as information values and gradients of a function $f$ at the vertices of $T$ and is optimal for recovery of $f({\bf w})$ at every point ${\bf w}$ of an admissible domain $P$ containing $T$ on the class $W^2(P)$ of twice differentiable functions on $P$ with uniformly bounded second order derivatives in any direction. If, in particular, every face of $T$ (of any dimension) contains its circumcenter, we can take $P=T$. We also find the error function of the pointwise optimal method which turns out to be a function in …
Cubature formulas (CFs) based on radial basis functions (RBFs) have become an important tool for multivariate numerical integration of scattered data. Although numerous works have been published on such RBF-CFs, their stability theory can still be considered as underdeveloped. Here, we strive to pave the way towards a more mature stability theory for RBF-CFs. In particular, we prove stability for RBF-CFs based on compactly supported RBFs under certain conditions on the shape parameter and the data points. Moreover, it is shown that asymptotic stability of many RBF-CFs is independent of polynom…
We propose and analyse numerical algorithms based on weighted least squares for the approximation of a real-valued function on a general bounded domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^d$. Given any $n$-dimensional approximation space $V_n \subset L^2(Ω)$, the analysis in [6] shows the existence of stable and optimally converging weighted least-squares estimators, using a number of function evaluations $m$ of the order $n \log n$. When an $L^2(Ω)$-orthonormal basis of $V_n$ is available in analytic form, such estimators can be constructed using the algorithms described in [6,Section 5]. If the basis also …
