Approximations of non-smooth multivariate functions return low-order approximations in the vicinities of the singularities. Most prior works solve this problem for univariate functions. In this work we introduce a method for approximating non-smooth multivariate functions of the form $f = g + r_+$ where $g,r \in C^{M+1}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ and the function $r_+$ is defined by \[ r_+(y) = \left\{ \begin{array}{ll} r(y), & r(y) \geq 0 \\ 0, & r(y) < 0 \end{array} \right. \ , \ \forall y \in \mathbb{R}^n \ . \] Given scattered (or uniform) data points $X \subset \mathbb{R}^n$, we investigate approximation by quasi-interpolation. We design a correction term, such that the corrected approximation achieves full approximation order on the entire domain. We also show that the correction term is the solution to a Moving Least Squares (MLS) problem, and as such can both be easily computed and is smooth. Last, we prove that the suggested method includes a high-order approximation to the locations of the singularities.
In this paper, we are concerned with multivariate Gegenbauer approximation of functions defined in the $d$-dimensional hypercube. Two new and sharper bounds for the coefficients of multivariate Gegenbauer expansion of analytic functions are presented based on two different extensions of the Bernstein ellipse. We then establish an explicit error bound for the multivariate Gegenbauer approximation associated with an $\ell^q$ ball index set in the uniform norm. We also consider the multivariate approximation of functions with finite regularity and derive the associated error bound on the full gri…
Given gridded cell-average data of a smooth multivariate function, we present a constructive explicit procedure for generating a high-order global approximation of the function. One contribution is the derivation of high order approximations to point-values of the function directly from the cell-average data. The second contribution is the development of univariate B-spline based high order quasi-interpolation operators using cell-average data. Multivariate spline quasi-interpolation approximation operators are obtained by tensor products of the univariate operators.
The Sanathanan-Koerner iteration developed in 1963 is classical approach for rational approximation. This approach multiplies both sides of the approximation by the denominator polynomial yielding a linear problem and then introduces a weight at each iteration to correct for this linearization. Unfortunately this weight introduces a numerical instability. We correct this instability by constructing Vandermonde matrices for both the numerator and denominator polynomials using the Arnoldi iteration with an initial vector that enforces this weighting. This Stabilized Sanathanan-Koerner iteration …
We consider spline functions over simplicial meshes in $\RR^n$. We assume that the spline pieces join together with some finite order of smoothness but the pieces themselves are infinitely smooth. Such splines can have extra orders of smoothness at a vertex, a property known as \emph{supersmoothness}, which plays a role in the construction of multivariate splines and in the finite element method. In this paper we characterize supersmoothness in terms of the degeneracy of spaces of polynomial splines over the cell of simplices sharing the vertex, and use it to determine the maximal order of sup…
We compare a recently proposed multivariate spline based on mixed partial derivatives with two other standard splines for the scattered data smoothing problem. The splines are defined as the minimiser of a penalised least squares functional. The penalties are based on partial differentiation operators, and are integrated using the finite element method. We compare three methods to two problems: to remove the mixture of Gaussian and impulsive noise from an image, and to recover a continuous function from a set of noisy observations.
In this paper, we address the problem of approximating a multivariate function defined on a general domain in $d$ dimensions from sample points. We consider weighted least-squares approximation in an arbitrary finite-dimensional space $P$ from independent random samples taken according to a suitable measure. In general, least-squares approximations can be inaccurate and ill-conditioned when the number of sample points $M$ is close to $N = \dim(P)$. To counteract this, we introduce a novel method for sampling in general domains which leads to provably accurate and well-conditioned approximation…
We address classic multivariate polynomial regression tasks from a novel perspective resting on the notion of general polynomial $l_p$-degree, with total, Euclidean, and maximum degree being the centre of considerations. While ensuring stability is a theoretically known and empirically observable limitation of any computational scheme seeking for fast function approximation, we show that choosing Euclidean degree resists the instability phenomenon best. Especially, for a class of analytic functions, we termed Trefethen functions, we extend recent argumentations that suggest this result to be g…
In some applications, one is interested in reconstructing a function $f$ from its Fourier series coefficients. The problem is that the Fourier series is slowly convergent if the function is non-periodic, or is non-smooth. In this paper, we suggest a method for deriving high order approximation to $f$ using a Padé-like method. Namely, by fitting some Fourier coefficients of the approximant to the given Fourier coefficients of $f$. Given the Fourier series coefficients of a function on a rectangular domain in $\mathbb{R}^d$, assuming the function is piecewise smooth, we approximate the function …
We combine a periodization strategy for weighted $L_{2}$-integrands with efficient approximation methods in order to approximate multivariate non-periodic functions on the high-dimensional cube $\left[-\frac{1}{2},\frac{1}{2}\right]^{d}$. Our concept allows to determine conditions on the $d$-variate torus-to-cube transformations ${ψ:\left[-\frac{1}{2},\frac{1}{2}\right]^{d}\to\left[-\frac{1}{2},\frac{1}{2}\right]^{d}}$ such that a non-periodic function is transformed into a smooth function in the Sobolev space $\mathcal H^{m}(\mathbb{T}^{d})$ when applying $ψ$. We adapt some $L_{\infty}(\mathb…
The natural kinship between classical theories of interpolation and approximation is well explored. In contrast to this, the interrelation between interpolation and approximation is subtle and this duality is relatively obscure in the context of fractal interpolation. The notion of $α$-fractal function provides a proper foundation for the approximation theoretic facet of univariate fractal interpolation functions (FIFs). However, no comparable approximation theoretic aspects of FIFs has been developed for functions of several variables. The current article intends to open the door for intrigui…
We present two approaches for computing rational approximations to multivariate functions, motivated by their effectiveness as surrogate models for high-energy physics (HEP) applications. Our first approach builds on the Stieltjes process to efficiently and robustly compute the coefficients of the rational approximation. Our second approach is based on an optimization formulation that allows us to include structural constraints on the rational approximation, resulting in a semi-infinite optimization problem that we solve using an outer approximation approach. We present results for synthetic a…
Multivariate quasi-projection operators $Q_j(f,φ, \widetildeφ)$, associated with a function $φ$ and a distribution/function $\widetildeφ$, are considered. The function $φ$ is supposed to satisfy the Strang-Fix conditions and a compatibility condition with $\widetildeφ$. Using technique based on the Fourier multipliers, we studied approximation properties of such operators for functions $f$ from anisotropic Besov spaces and $L_p$ spaces with $1\le p\le \infty$. In particular, upper and lower estimates of the $L_p$-error of approximation in terms of moduli of smoothness and best approximations a…
In this paper, we introduce a method known as polynomial frame approximation for approximating smooth, multivariate functions defined on irregular domains in $d$ dimensions, where $d$ can be arbitrary. This method is simple, and relies only on orthogonal polynomials on a bounding tensor-product domain. In particular, the domain of the function need not be known in advance. When restricted to a subdomain, an orthonormal basis is no longer a basis, but a frame. Numerical computations with frames present potential difficulties, due to the near-linear dependence of the truncated approximation syst…
We study approximation properties of general multivariate periodic quasi-interpolation operators, which are generated by distributions/functions $\widetildeφ_j$ and trigonometric polynomials $φ_j$. The class of such operators includes classical interpolation polynomials ($\widetildeφ_j$ is the Dirac delta function), Kantorovich-type operators ($\widetildeφ_j$ is a characteristic function), scaling expansions associated with wavelet constructions, and others. Under different compatibility conditions on $\widetildeφ_j$ and $φ_j$, we obtain upper and lower bound estimates for the $L_p$-error of a…

We discuss a pointwise numerical differentiation formula on multivariate scattered data, based on the coefficients of local polynomial interpolation at Discrete Leja Points, written in Taylor's formula monomial basis. Error bounds for the approximation of partial derivatives of any order compatible with the function regularity are provided, as well as sensitivity estimates to functional perturbations, in terms of the inverse Vandermonde coefficients that are active in the differentiation process. Several numerical tests are presented showing the accuracy of the approximation.
In a recent paper by the same authors, we provided a theoretical foundation for the component-by-component (CBC) construction of lattice algorithms for multivariate $L_2$ approximation in the worst case setting, for functions in a periodic space with general weight parameters. The construction led to an error bound that achieves the best possible rate of convergence for lattice algorithms. Previously available literature covered only weights of a simple form commonly known as product weights. In this paper we address the computational aspect of the construction. We develop fast CBC constructio…
Approximation properties of periodic quasi-projection operators with matrix dilations are studied. Such operators are generated by a sequence of functions $φ_j$ and a sequence of distributions/functions $\widetildeφ_j$. Error estimates for sampling-type quasi-projection operators are obtained under the periodic Strang-Fix conditions for $φ_j$ and the compatibility conditions for $φ_j$ and $\widetildeφ_j$. These estimates are given in terms of the Fourier coefficients of approximated functions and provide analogs of some known non-periodic results. Under some additional assumptions error estima…

Approximation properties of quasi-projection operators $Q_j(f,φ, \widetildeφ)$ are studied. Such an operator is associated with a function $φ$ satisfying the Strang-Fix conditions and a tempered distribution $\widetildeφ$ such that compatibility conditions with $φ$ hold. Error estimates in the uniform norm are obtained for a wide class of quasi-projection operators defined on the space of uniformly continuous functions and on the anisotropic Besov spaces. Under additional assumptions on $φ$ and $\widetildeφ$, two-sided estimates in terms of realizations of the $K$-functional are also obtained.

General multivariate distributions are notoriously expensive to sample from, particularly the high-dimensional posterior distributions in PDE-constrained inverse problems. This paper develops a sampler for arbitrary continuous multivariate distributions that is based on low-rank surrogates in the tensor-train format. We construct a tensor-train approximation to the target probability density function using the cross interpolation, which requires a small number of function evaluations. For sufficiently smooth distributions the storage required for the TT approximation is moderate, scaling linea…
