The dually flat structure introduced by Amari-Nagaoka is highlighted in information geometry and related fields. In practical applications, however, the underlying pseudo-Riemannian metric may often be degenerate, and such an excellent geometric structure is rarely defined on the entire space. To fix this trouble, in the present paper, we propose a novel generalization of the dually flat structure for a certain class of singular models from the viewpoint of Lagrange and Legendre singularity theory - we introduce a quasi-Hessian manifold endowed with a possibly degenerate metric and a particular symmetric cubic tensor, which exceeds the concept of statistical manifolds and is adapted to the theory of (weak) contrast functions. In particular, we establish Amari-Nagaoka's extended Pythagorean theorem and projection theorem in this general setup, and consequently, most of applications of these theorems are suitably justified even for such singular cases. This work is motivated by various interests with different backgrounds from Frobenius structure in mathematical physics to Deep Learning in data science.
In the field of statistics, many kind of divergence functions have been studied as an amount which measures the discrepancy between two probability distributions. In the differential geometrical approach in statistics (information geometry), dually flat spaces play a key role. In a dually flat space, there exist dual affine coordinate systems and strictly convex functions called potential and a canonical divergence is naturally introduced as a function of the affine coordinates and potentials. The canonical divergence satisfies a relational expression called triangular relation. This can be re…
In this paper, we prove that a strongly convex complex Finsler metric $F$ on a domain $D\subset\mathbb{C}^n$ is projectively flat (resp. dually flat) if and only if $F$ comes from a strongly convex complex Minkowski metric.
We present a correspondence between real analytic Kähler toric manifolds and dually flat spaces, similar to Delzant correspondence in symplectic geometry. This correspondence gives rise to a lifting procedure: if $f:M\to M'$ is an affine isometric map between dually flat spaces and if $N$ and $N'$ are Kähler toric manifolds associated to $M$ and $M'$, respectively, then there is an equivariant Kähler immersion $N\to N'$. For example, we show that the Veronese and Segre embeddings are lifts of inclusion maps between appropriate statistical manifolds. We also discuss applications to Quantum Mech…
In this paper, I will show how to use $β$-deformations to deal with dual flatness of $(α,β)$-metrics. It is a natural continuation of the research on dually flat Randers metrics(see arxiv:1209.1150). $β$-deformations is a new method in Riemann-Finsler geometry, it is introduced by the author(see arxiv:1209.0845).
In this work, the dual flatness, which is connected with Statistics and Information geometry, of general $(α,β)$-metrics (a new class of Finsler metrics) is studied. A nice characterization for such metrics to be dually flat under some suitable conditions is provided and all the solutions are completely determined. By using an original kind of metrical deformations, many non-trivial explicit examples are constructed. Moreover, the relationship of dual flatness and projective flatness of such metrics is shown.
In this paper, we consider Randers change of some special $ (α, β)- $ metrics. First we find the fundamental metric tensor and Cartan tensor of these Randers changed $ (α, β)- $metrics. Next, we establish a general formula for inverse of fundamental metric tensors of these metrics. Finally, we find the necessary and sufficient conditions under which the Randers change of these $ (α, β)- $ metrics are projectively and locally dually flat.
In this paper, I will show how to use beta-deformations to deal with dual flatness of Randers metrics. beta-deformations is a new method in Riemann-Finsler geometry, it is introduced by the author(see arxiv:1209.0845). Later on I will provide more applications of the new kind of deformations in Finsler geometry.
This paper studies geometrical structure of the manifold of escort probability distributions and shows its new applicability to information science. In order to realize escort probabilities we use a conformal transformation that flattens so-called alpha-geometry of the space of discrete probability distributions, which well characterizes nonadditive statistics on the space. As a result escort probabilities are proved to be flat coordinates of the usual probabilities for the derived dually flat structure. Finally, we demonstrate that escort probabilities with the new structure admits a simple a…

The class of spherically symmetric Finsler metrics is studied and locally dually flat and projectively flat spherically symmetric Finsler metrics is classified.
The dual variety X* for a smooth n-dimensional variety X of the projective space P^N is the set of tangent hyperplanes to X. In the general case, the variety X* is a hypersurface in the dual space (P^N)*. If dim X* < N - 1, then the variety X is called dually degenerate. The authors refine these definitions for a variety X \subset P^N with a degenerate Gauss map of rank r. For such a variety, in the general case, the dimension of its dual variety X* is N - l - 1, where l = n - r, and X is dually degenerate if dim X* < N - l - 1. In 1979 Griffiths and Harris proved that a smooth variety X \subs…
In this paper, we characterize locally dually flat and Antonelli $m$-th root Finsler metrics. Then, we show that every $m$-th root Finsler metric of isotropic mean Berwald curvature reduces to a weakly Berwald metric.
In this paper, we consider Kropina change of $m$-th root Finsler metrics. We find necessary and sufficient condition under which the Kropina change of an $m$-th root Finsler metric be locally dually flat. Then we prove that the Kropina change of an $m$-th root Finsler metric is locally projectively flat if and only if it is locally Minkowskian.
In this paper, we characterize locally dually flat generalized m-th root Finsler metrics. Then we find a condition under which a generalized m-th root metric is projectively related to a m-th root metric. Finally, we prove that if a generalized m-th root metric is conformal to a m-th root metric, then both of them reduce to Riemannian metrics.
In our previous work, we have generalized the notion of dually flat or Hessian manifold to quasi-Hessian manifold; it admits the Hessian metric to be degenerate but possesses a particular symmetric cubic tensor (generalized Amari-Centsov tensor). Indeed, it naturally appears as a singular model in information geometry and related fields. A quasi-Hessian manifold is locally accompanied with a possibly multi-valued potential and its dual, whose graphs are called the $e$-wavefront and the $m$-wavefront respectively, together with coherent tangent bundles endowed with flat connections. In the pres…
We propose a definition of genericity for singular flat planar 3-webs formed by integral curves of implicit ODEs and give a classification of generic singularities of such webs.
Robert Bryant (Theorie des varietes minimales et applications, 1988, 154: 321-347) proved that an isolated singularity of a conformal metric of positive constant curvature on a Riemann surface is a conical one. Using Complex Analysis, we find all of the local models for an isolated singularity of a flat metric whose area satisfies some polynomial growth condition near the singularity. In particular, we show that an isolated singularity of a flat metric with finite area is also a conical one.
We prove a removal of singularities result for Bach-flat metrics in dimension 4 under the assumption of bounded L^2 norm of curvature, bounded Sobolev constant and a volume growth bound. This result extends the removal of singularities result for special classes of Bach-flat metrics obtained in \cite{TVMOD}. For the proof we analyze the decay rates of solutions to the Bach-flat equation linearized around a flat metric. This classification is used to prove that Bach-flat cones are in fact ALE of order $τ$ for any $τ< 2$. This result is then used to prove the removal of singularities theorem.
We construct flat metrics in a given conformal class with prescribed singularities of real orders at marked points of a closed real surface. The singularities can be small conical, cylindrical, and large conical with possible translation component. Along these lines we give an elementary proof of the uniformization theorem for the sphere.
It is classically known that complete flat surfaces in Euclidean 3-space are cylinders over space curves. This implies that the study of global behaviour of flat surfaces requires the study of singular points as well. If a flat surface $f$ admits singularities but its Gauss map $ν$ can be smoothly extended across the singular set, $f$ is called a frontal. In addition, if the pair $(f,ν)$ gives an immersion, $f$ is called a front. A front $f$ is called flat if the Gauss map degenerates everywhere. The parallel surfaces and the focal surface of a flat front $f$ are also flat fronts. In this pape…
Singular Finsler metrics, such as Kropina metrics and $m$-Kropina metrics, have a lot of applications in the real world. In this paper, we classify a class of singular $(α,β)$-metrics which are locally projectively flat with constant flag curvature in dimension $n= 2$ and $n \ge 3$ respectively. Further, we determine the local structure of $m$-Kropina metrics and particularly Kropina metrics which are projectively flat with constant flag curvature and prove that such metrics must be locally Minkowskian but are not necessarily flat-parallel.
We construct Ricci flat Kahler metrics with cone singularities along a complex hypersurface. This construction is inspired in part by R. Mazzeo's program in the case of negative Einstein constant, and uses the linear theory developed recently by S. Donaldson.
We prove an existence theorem for Asymptotically Conical Ricci Flat Kahler metrics in $\mathbb{C}^2$ with cone singularities along a smooth complex curve. These metrics are expected to arise as blow up limits of non collapsed sequences of Kahler Einstein metrics with cone singularities.
Let N_0 = C^2/H be an isolated quotient singularity with H in U (2) a finite subgroup. We show that for any Q-Gorenstein smoothings of N_0 a nearby fiber admits ALE Ricci-flat Kahler metrics in any Kahler class. Moreover, we generalize Kronheimer's results on hyperkahler 4-manifolds, by giving an explicit classification of the ALE Ricci-flat Kahler surfaces. We construct ALF Ricci-flat Kahler metrics on the above non-simply connected manifolds. These provide new examples of ALF Ricci-flat Kahler 4-manifolds, with cubic volume growth and cyclic fundamental group at infinity.
On an affine flat manifold with coordinates x^j and convex local potential function f, we call the affine Kahler metric f_{ij} dx^i dx^j semi-flat Calabi-Yau if it satisfies det f_{ij} = 1. Recently Gross-Wilson have constructed many such metrics on S^2 minus 24 singularities, as degenerate limits of Calabi-Yau metrics on elliptic K3 surfaces. We construct many more such metrics on S^2, singular at any 6 or more points, and compute the local affine structure near the singularities. The techniques involve affine differential geometry and solving a semilinear PDE on S^2 minus singularities. We a…
In a previous article, we generalised the classical four-dimensional Chern-Gauss-Bonnet formula to a class of manifolds with finitely many conformally flat ends and singular points, in particular obtaining the first such formula in a dimension higher than two which allows the underlying manifold to have isolated conical singularities. In the present article, we extend this result to all even dimensions $n\geq 4$ in the case of a class of conformally flat manifolds.
Singular Finsler metrics, such as Kropina metrics and $m$-Kropina metrics, have a lot of applications in the real world. In this paper, we study a class of singular Finsler metrics defined by a Riemann metric $α$ and 1-form $β$ and characterize those which are respectively Douglasian and locally projectively flat in dimension $n\ge 3$ by some equations. Our study shows that the main class induced is an $m$-Kropina metric plus a linear part on $β$. For this class with $m\ne -1$, the local structure of projectively flat case is determined, and it is proved that a Douglas $m$-Kropina metric must …
By Hartman--Nirenberg's theorem, any complete flat hypersurface in Euclidean space must be a cylinder over a plane curve. However, if we admit some singularities, there are many non-trivial examples. Flat fronts are flat hypersurfaces with admissible singularities. Murata--Umehara gave a representation formula for complete flat fronts with non-empty singular set in Euclidean $3$-space, and proved the four vertex type theorem. In this paper, we prove that, unlike the case of $n=2$, there do not exist any complete flat fronts with non-empty singular set in Euclidean $(n+1)$-space $(n\geq 3)$.
We consider flat surfaces and the points of their metric completions, particularly the singularities to which the flat structure of the surface does not extend. The local behavior near a singular point x can be partially described by a topological space L(x) which captures all the ways that x can be "approached linearly". The homeomorphism type of L(x) is an affine invariant. When x is not a cone point or an infinite-angle singularity, we say it is wild; in this case it is necessary to add further metric data to L(x) to get a quantitative description of the surface near x.
We study the flat geometry of the least degenerate singularity of a singular surface in $\mathbb R^4$, the $I_{1}$ singularity parametrised by $(x,y)\mapsto(x,xy,y^{2},y^{3})$. This singularity appears generically when projecting a regular surface in $\mathbb R^5$ orthogonally to $\mathbb R^4$ along a tangent direction. We obtain a generic normal form for $I_1$ invariant under diffeomorphisms in the source and isometries in the target. We then consider the contact with hyperplanes by classifying submersions which preserve the image of $I_1$. The main tool is the study of the singularities of t…
This paper continues the previous studies in two papers of Huang-Yin [HY3-4] on the flattening problem of a CR singular point of real codimension two sitting in a submanifold in ${\mathbb C}^{n+1}$ with $n+1\ge 3$, whose CR points are non-minimal. Partially based on the geometric approach initiated in [HY3] and a formal theory approach used in [HY4], we are able to provide a very general flattening theorem for a non-degenerate CR singular point. As an application, we provide a solution to the local complex Plateau problem and obtain the analyticity of the local hull of holomorphy near a real a…
The fine structure of the singular set of area-minimizing integral currents II: rectifiability of flat singular points with singularity degree larger than $1$
We extend our discrete uniformization theorems for planar, $m$-connected, Jordan domains [Journal für die reine und angewandte Mathematik 670 (2012), 65--92] to closed surfaces of non-positive genus.
We give a geometric interpretation of weighted homogeneous solutions to the associativity equation in terms of the web theory and construct a massive Frobenius 3-fold germ via a singular 3-web germ satisfying the following conditions: 1) the web germ admits at least one infinitesimal symmetry, 2) the Chern connection form is holomorphic, 3) the curvature form vanishes identically.
Singular Finsler metrics, such as Kropina metrics and $m$-Kropina metrics, have a lot of applications in the real world. In this paper, we study a class of two-dimensional singular Finsler metrics defined by a Riemann metric $α$ and 1-form $β$, and we characterize those which are Douglasian or locally projectively flat by some equations. It shows that the main class induced is an $m$-Kropina metric plus a linear part on $β$. For this class, the local structure of Douglasian or (in part) projectively flat case is determined, and in particular we show that a Kropina metric is always Douglasian a…
By a result of W.~P. Thurston, the moduli space of flat metrics on the sphere with $n$ cone singularities of prescribed positive curvatures is a complex hyperbolic orbifold of dimension $n-3$. The Hermitian form comes from the area of the metric. Using geometry of Euclidean polyhedra, we observe that this space has a natural decomposition into real hyperbolic convex polyhedra of dimensions $n-3$ and $\leq \frac{1}{2}(n-1)$. By a result of W.~Veech, the moduli space of flat metrics on a compact surface with cone singularities of prescribed negative curvatures has a foliation whose leaves have a…
In this paper we establish stability of the Ricci de Turck flow near Ricci-flat metrics with isolated conical singularities. More precisely, we construct a Ricci de Turck flow which starts sufficiently close to a Ricci-flat metric with isolated conical singularities and converges to a singular Ricci-flat metric under an assumption of integrability, linear and tangential stability. We provide a characterization of conical singularities satisfying tangential stability and discuss examples where the integrability condition is satisfied.
The Fine Structure of the Singular Set of Area-Minimizing Integral Currents III: Frequency 1 Flat Singular Points and $\mathcal{H}^{m-2}$-a.e. Uniqueness of Tangent Cones
This thesis studies moduli spaces of singular connections on 3-manifolds and manifolds with cylindrical ends. A Chern-Simons functional is defined for singular connections on 3-manifolds which are singular along a knot. The critical points of that Chern-Simons functional are flat singular connections. The Hodge-de Rham theory of singular flat connections is presented, yielding a topological condition for determining when a singular flat connection is isolated. Finally, moduli spaces of anti-self-dual singular connections are investigated on manifolds with cylindrical ends. The main analytical …
We consider developable surfaces along the singular set of a swallowtail which are considered to be flat approximations of the swallowtail. For the study of singularities of such developable surfaces, we introduce the notion of Darboux frames along swallowtails and invariants. As a by-product, we give a new example of a frontal which is locally homeomorphic to a swallowtail.
We show that the explicit ALE Ricci-flat Kahler metrics constructed by Eguchi-Hanson, Gibbons-Hawking, Hitchin and Kronheimer, and their free quotients are metrics obtained by Tian-Yau techniques. The proof relies on a construction of good compactifications of Q-Gorenstein deformations of quotient surface singularities as log del Pezzo surfaces with only cyclic quotient singularities at infinity.
For any elliptic K3 surface $\mathfrak{F}: \mathcal{K} \rightarrow \mathbb{P}^1$, we construct a family of collapsing Ricci-flat Kähler metrics such that curvatures are uniformly bounded away from singular fibers, and which Gromov-Hausdorff limit to $\mathbb{P}^1$ equipped with the McLean metric. There are well-known examples of this type of collapsing, but the key point of our construction is that we can additionally give a precise description of the metric degeneration near each type of singular fiber, without any restriction on the types of singular fibers.
The regularity of systolically extremal surfaces is a notoriously difficult problem already discussed by M. Gromov in 1983, who proposed an argument toward the existence of $L^2$-extremizers exploiting the theory of $r$-regularity developed by P. A. White and others by the 1950s. We propose to study the problem of systolically extremal metrics in the context of generalized metrics of nonpositive curvature. A natural approach would be to work in the class of Alexandrov surfaces of finite total curvature, where one can exploit the tools of the completion provided in the context of Radon measures…
