We consider a complete sample of 101810 giants with Gaia DR2 parallaxes $\varpi$ within the red clump domain of the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram in the space cylinder with a radius of 700 pc around the Sun and a height of $|Z|=1800$ pc. We use the Gaia DR2 $G_\mathrm{BP}$, $G_\mathrm{RP}$ and WISE $W3$ photometry. We describe the spatial variations of the modes of the observables $G_\mathrm{BP}-G_\mathrm{RP}$, $G_\mathrm{RP}-W3$, $G_\mathrm{BP}+5+5\,\log_{10}\varpi$, $G_\mathrm{RP}+5+5\,\log_{10}\varpi$, and $W3+5+5\,\log_{10}\varpi$ by extinction and reddening in combination with linear vertical gradients of the intrinsic colours and absolute magnitudes of the red giant clump. The derived clump median absolute magnitude in $W3$ agrees with its recent literature estimates. The clump median intrinsic colours and absolute magnitudes in $G_\mathrm{BP}$ and $G_\mathrm{RP}$ are derived for the first time at a precision level of 0.01 mag. We confirm the reliability of the derived clump absolute magnitudes, intrinsic colours, and their vertical gradients by comparing them with the theoretical predictions from PARSEC, MIST and BaSTI isochrones. This leads us to the median age and [Fe/H] of the clump within $|Z|<1.7$ kpc from the Galactic mid-plane as $(2.3\pm0.5)+(3.2\pm1.6)\,|Z|$ Gyr and $(-0.08\pm0.08)-(0.16\pm0.07)\,|Z|$ dex, respectively, where $Z$ is expressed in kpc. These results agree with recent empirical and theoretical estimates. Moreover, all the models give similar age-metallicity relations by use of our results in the optical range. The derived extinctions and reddenings across the whole dust half-layer below or above the Sun converge to the reddening $E(B-V)=0.06$ mag by use of the most reliable extinction laws.
We compare eight sources of reddening and extinction estimates for approximately 60,000 {\it Gaia} DR1 Tycho--Gaia Astrometric Solution (TGAS) main sequence stars younger than 3~Gyr with a relative error of the {\it Gaia} parallax less than 0.1. For the majority of the stars, the best 2D dust emission-based reddening maps show considerable differences between the reddening to infinity and the one calculated to the stellar distance using the barometric law of the dust distribution. This proves that the majority of the TGAS stars are embedded in to the Galactic dust layer and a proper 3D treatme…
Gaia DR1 Tycho-Gaia Astrometric Solution parallaxes, Tycho-2 photometry and reddening/extinction estimates from nine data sources for 38074 giants within 415 pc from the Sun are used to compare their position in the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram with theoretical estimates, which are based on the PARSEC and MIST isochrones and the TRILEGAL model of the Galaxy with its parameters being widely varied. We conclude that (1) some systematic errors of the reddening/extinction estimates are the main uncertainty in this study; (2) any emission-based 2D reddening map cannot give reliable estimates of redd…
The vast majority of Gaia DR1 Tycho-Gaia astrometric solution (TGAS) stars are located within a distance of 1200 pc from the Sun and up to 600 pc within the Galactic plane. Complete usage of their parallaxes is possible only if their reddening and interstellar extinction are known. We obtained those from a comparison of the eight most accurate and complete 3D maps of reddening and extinction in the considered space. We analyzed the statistics of the maps and their differences in the cells of $20\times20\times20$ pc in the whole considered space. The comparison of the maps in the cells outside …
Precise correction of dust reddening is fundamental to obtain the intrinsic parameters of celestial objects. The Schlegel et al. (SFD) and the Planck 2D extinction maps are widely used for the reddening correction. In this work, using accurate reddening determinations of about two million stars from the Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) data release 5 (DR5) and Gaia DR2, we check and calibrate the SFD and Planck maps in the middle and high Galactic latitudes. The maps show similar precision in reddening correction. We find small yet significant spatially depend…
We exploit a complete sample of 101\,810 {\it Gaia} DR2 giants, selected in Paper I in the space cylinder with a radius of 700 pc around the Sun and a height of $|Z|=1800$ pc, using the {\it Gaia} DR2 parallaxes, $G_\mathrm{BP}$ and $G_\mathrm{RP}$ photometry, and {\it WISE} $W3$ photometry. We explain the spatial variations of the modes of the observables $G_\mathrm{BP}-G_\mathrm{RP}$ and $G_\mathrm{RP}-W3$ by the spatial variations of the corresponding reddenings described in the GM20 3D dust distribution model. Presented in this paper, GM20 is an advanced version of the model introduced by …
M dwarfs are the dominating type of stars in the solar neighbourhood. They serve as excellent tracers for the study of the distribution and properties of the nearby interstellar dust. In this work, we aim to obtain high accuracy reddening values of M dwarf stars from the Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) Data Release 8 (DR8). Combining the LAMOST spectra with the high-quality optical photometry from the Gaia Early Data Release 3 (Gaia EDR3), we have estimated the reddening values $E(G_{\rm BP}-G_{\rm RP})$ of 641,426 M dwarfs with the machine-learning algorithm…
We present the most extensive and detailed reddening maps of the Magellanic Clouds (MCs) derived from the color properties of Red Clump (RC) stars. The analysis is based on the deep photometric maps from the fourth phase of the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE-IV), covering approximately 670 deg2 of the sky in the Magellanic System region. The resulting maps provide reddening information for 180 deg2 in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and 75 deg2 in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), with a resolution of 1.7x1.7 arcmin in the central parts of the MCs, decreasing to approximately …
The systematic offset of Gaia parallaxes has been widely reported with Gaia's second data release, and it is expected to persist in future Gaia data. In order to use Gaia parallaxes to infer distances to high precision, we develop a hierarchical probabilistic model to determine the Gaia parallax zero point offset along with the calibration of an empirical model for luminosity of red clump stars by combining astrometric and photometric measurements. Using a cross-matched sample of red clump stars from the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE) and Gaia Data Release 2 (D…
Gaia Data Release 1 allows to recalibrate standard candles such as the Red Clump stars. To use those, they first need to be accurately characterised. In particular, colours are needed to derive the interstellar extinction. As no filter is available for the first Gaia data release and to avoid the atmosphere model mismatch, an empirical calibration is unavoidable. The purpose of this work is to provide the first complete and robust photometric empirical calibration of the Gaia Red Clump stars of the solar neighbourhood, through colour-colour, effective temperature-colour and absolute magnitude-…
Recent results have suggested that there is tension between the Gaia DR1 TGAS distances and the distances obtained using luminosities determined by eclipsing binaries or asteroseismology on red giant stars. We use the $K_s$-band luminosities of red clump stars, identified and characterized by asteroseismology, to make independent distance estimates. Our results suggest that Gaia TGAS distances contain a systematic error that decreases with increasing distance. We propose a correction to mitigate this offset as a function of parallax that is valid for the Kepler field and values of parallax tha…
We present reddening maps of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), based on color measurements of the red clump. Reddening values of our maps were obtained by calculating the difference of the observed and intrinsic color of the red clump in both galaxies. To obtain the intrinsic color of the red clump, we used reddenings obtained from late-type eclipsing binary systems, measurements for blue supergiants and reddenings derived from Strömgren photometry of B-type stars. We obtained intrinsic color of the red clump $(V-I)_0$ = 0.838 $\pm$ 0.034 mag in the LMC, and $(…
The zero point of the reddening toward the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) has been the subject of some dispute. Its uncertainty propagates as a systematic error for methods which measure the extragalactic distance scale through knowledge of the absolute extinction of LMC stars. In an effort to resolve this issue, we used three different methods to calibrate the most widely-used metric to predict LMC extinction, the intrinsic color of the red clump, $(V-I)_{RC,0}$, for the inner $\sim$3 degrees of that galaxy. The first approach was to empirically calibrate the color zeropoints of the BaSTI isoch…
We present an independent examination of the parallax zero-point of the Third Gaia Early Data Release (hereafter EDR3), using the LAMOST primary red clump (PRC) stellar sample. A median parallax offset of around $26 μ$as, slightly larger than that found by examination of distant quasars, is found for both the five- and six-parameter solutions in EDR3, based on samples of over 63,000 and 2000 PRC stars, respectively. Similar to the previous investigation of Lindegren et al., to which we compare our results, the parallax zero-point exhibits clear dependencies on the $G$ magnitudes, colors, and p…
We present a sample of $\sim$ 140,000 primary red clump (RC) stars of spectral signal-to-noise ratios higher than 20 from the LAMOST Galactic spectroscopic surveys, selected based on their positions in the metallicity-dependent effective temperature--surface gravity and color--metallicity diagrams, supervised by high-quality $Kepler$ asteroseismology data. The stellar masses and ages of those stars are further determined from the LAMOST spectra, using the Kernel Principal Component Analysis method, trained with thousands of RCs in the LAMOST-$Kepler$ fields with accurate asteroseismic mass mea…
Based on the Gaia DR1 TGAS parallaxes and photometry from the Tycho-2, Gaia, 2MASS, and WISE catalogues, we have produced a sample of about 100 000 clump red giants within about 800 pc of the Sun. The systematic variations of the mode of their absolute magnitude as a function of the distance, magnitude, and other parameters have been analyzed. We show that these variations reach 0.7 mag and cannot be explained by variations in the interstellar extinction or intrinsic properties of stars and by selection. The only explanation seems to be a systematic error of the Gaia DR1 TGAS parallax dependen…
Although core helium-burning red clump (RC) stars are faint at ultraviolet wavelengths, their ultraviolet-optical color is a unique and accessible probe of their physical properties. Using data from the GALEX All Sky Imaging Survey, Gaia Data Release 2 and the SDSS APOGEE DR14 survey, we find that spectroscopic metallicity is strongly correlated with the location of an RC star in the UV-optical color magnitude diagram. The RC has a wide spread in (NUV - G)$_0$ color, over 4 magnitudes, compared to a 0.7-magnitude range in (G$_{BP}$ - G$_{RP}$)$_0$. We propose a photometric, dust-corrected, ult…

We combine LAMOST DR7 spectroscopic data and Gaia EDR3 photometric data to construct high-quality giant (0.7 $< (BP-RP) <$ 1.4) and dwarf (0.5 $< (BP-RP) < $ 1.5) samples in the high Galactic latitude region, with precise corrections for magnitude-dependent systematic errors in the Gaia photometry and careful reddening corrections using empirically determined color- and reddening-dependent coefficients. We use the two samples to build metallicity-dependent stellar loci of Gaia colors for giants and dwarfs, respectively. For a given $(BP-RP)$ color, a one dex change in [Fe/H] results in about a…
In this first paper we simulate the population of disc Red Clump stars to be observed by Gaia. We generate a set of test particles and we evolve it in a 3D barred Milky Way like galactic potential. We assign physical properties of the Red Clump trace population and a realistic 3D interstellar extinction model. We add Gaia observational constraints and an error model according to the pre-commissioning scientific performance assessments. We present and analyse two mock catalogues, offered to the community, that are an excellent test bed for testing tools being developed for the future scientific…
We have obtained accurate dust reddening from far-ultraviolet (UV) to the mid-infrared (IR) for up to 5 million stars by the star-pair algorithm based on LAMOST stellar parameters along with GALEX, Pan-STARRS 1, Gaia, SDSS, 2MASS, and WISE photometric data. The typical errors are between 0.01-0.03 mag for most colors. We derived the empirical reddening coefficients for 21 colors both in the traditional (single valued) way and as a function of Teff and E(B-V) by using the largest samples of accurate reddening measurements, together with the extinction values from Schlegel et al. The correspondi…
Context: Deep GALEX UV data show that the extreme outskirts of some spiral galaxies are teeming with star formation. Such young stellar populations evolving so far away from the bulk of their host galaxies challenge our overall understanding of how star formation proceeds at galactic scales. It is at present unclear whether our own Milky Way may also exhibit ongoing and recent star formation beyond the conventional edge of the disk ($\sim 15$ kpc). Aims: Using \textit{Gaia} DR2 data, we aim to determine if such a population is present in the Galactic halo, beyond the nominal radius of the Milk…
Distances to individual stars in our own Galaxy are critical in order to piece together the nature of its velocity and spatial structure. Core helium burning red clump (RC) stars have similar luminosities, are abundant throughout the Galaxy, and thus constitute good standard candles. We build a hierarchical probabilistic model to quantify the quality of RC stars as standard candles using parallax measurements from the first Gaia data release. A unique aspect of our methodology is to fully account for (and marginalize over) parallax, photometry, and dust corrections uncertainties, which leads t…
We present new reddening maps of the SMC and LMC based on the data of the third phase of the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE III). We have used two different methods to derive optical reddening maps. We adopt a theoretical mean unreddened colour for the red clump in the SMC and LMC, respectively. We subdivide the photometric data for both Clouds into subfields and calculate the difference between the observed red clump position and the theoretical value for each field, which provides us with the reddening value in (V-I). Furthermore reddening values are obtained for 13490 LMC RR…
We present high-resolution maps of the dust reddening in the Magellanic Clouds (MCs). The maps cover the Large and Small Magellanic Cloud (LMC and SMC) area and have a spatial angular resolution between $\sim$ 26 arcsec and 55 arcmin. Based on the data from the optical and near-infrared (IR) photometric surveys, including the Gaia Survey, the SkyMapper Southern Survey (SMSS), the Survey of the Magellanic Stellar History (SMASH), the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) and the near-infrared $YJK_{\rm{S}}$ VISTA survey of the Magellanic Clouds system (VMC), we have obtained multi-band photometric …
Using a sample of nearly 140,000 primary red clump stars selected from the LAMOST and $Gaia$ surveys, we have identified a large sample of "young" [$α$/Fe]-enhanced stars with stellar ages younger than 6.0 Gyr and [$α$/Fe] ratios greater than 0.15 dex. The stellar ages and [$α$/Fe] ratios are measured from LAMOST spectra, using a machine learning method trained with common stars in the LAMOST-APOGEE fields (for [$α$/Fe]) and in the LAMOST-$Kepler$ fields (for stellar age). The existence of these "young" [$α$/Fe]-enhanced stars is not expected from the classical Galactic chemical evolution mode…
We present new three-dimensional (3D) interstellar dust reddening maps of the Galactic plane in three colours, E(G-Ks), E(Bp-Rp) and E(H-Ks). The maps have a spatial angular resolution of 6 arcmin and covers over 7000 deg$^2$ of the Galactic plane for Galactic longitude 0 deg $<$ $l$ $<$ 360 deg and latitude $|b|$ $<$ $10$ deg. The maps are constructed from robust parallax estimates from the Gaia Data Release 2 (Gaia DR2) combined with the high-quality optical photometry from the Gaia DR2 and the infrared photometry from the 2MASS and WISE surveys. We estimate the colour excesses, E(G-Ks), E(B…
We propose a new way to search for hypervelocity stars in the Galactic bulge, by using red clump (RC) giants, that are good distance indicators. The 2nd Gaia Data Release and the near-IR data from the VISTA Variables in the Via Lactea (VVV) Survey led to the selection of a volume limited sample of 34 bulge RC stars. A search in this combined data set leads to the discovery of seven candidate hypervelocity red clump stars in the Milky Way bulge. Based on this search we estimate the total production rate of hypervelocity RC stars from the central supermassive black hole (SMBH) to be $N_{HVRC} = …
We performed detailed photometric and astrometric analyses of the open star clusters Berkeley 68 and Stock 20. This was based on ground-based CCD UBV photometric data complemented by space-based Gaia Data Release 3 photometry and astrometry. 198 stars were identified as likely cluster members for Berkeley 68 and 51 for Stock 20. Two-color diagrams were used to derive the reddening and photometric metallicity for each cluster. The reddening for Berkeley 68 is $E(B-V)=0.520 \pm 0.032$ and $0.400 \pm 0.048$ mag for Stock 20. Photometric metallicity [Fe/H] is $-0.13 \pm 0.08$ dex for Berkeley 68, …

Determining the distances to the Planck Galactic cold clumps (PGCCs) is crucial for the measurement of their physical parameters and the study of their Galactic distribution. Based on two large catalogues of stars with robust distances and reddening estimates from the literature, we have estimated accurate distances to 61 PGCCs in the second Galactic quadrant. For this purpose, we have selected stars along the sightlines overlapping with the cores of the sample clumps and fitted the reddening profiles with a simple reddening model. The typical uncertainties of the resultant distances of these …
Archival Vilnius CCD photometric observations are presented for the heavily reddened star cluster Melotte 105, resulting in colour-magnitude diagrams and spectral class estimates. There is considerable lack of agreement between studies for reddening, age, and distance for this cluster explaining why the archival data are being made available by this paper. The derived reddening E(B-V =0.34 +/- 0.04 mag and the distance V-M =12.9 +/- 0.3 mag directly from the Vilnius photometry. The Gaia Data Release 2 (DR2) and Vilnius photometric data of the cluster were used to estimate the structural parame…
We have demonstrated the advantage of combining multi-wavelength observations, from the ultraviolet (UV) to near-infrared, to study Kron 3, a massive star cluster in the Small Magellanic Cloud. We have estimated the radius of the cluster Kron 3 to be 2.'0 and for the first time, we report the identification of NUV-bright red clump (RC) stars and the extension of the RCin colour and magnitude in the NUV vs (NUV-optical) colour-magnitude diagram (CMD). We found that extension of the RC is an intrinsic property of the cluster and it is not due to contamination of field stars or differential redde…
We present a new three-dimensional map of dust reddening, based on Gaia parallaxes and stellar photometry from Pan-STARRS 1 and 2MASS. This map covers the sky north of a declination of -30 degrees, out to a distance of several kiloparsecs. This new map contains three major improvements over our previous work. First, the inclusion of Gaia parallaxes dramatically improves distance estimates to nearby stars. Second, we incorporate a spatial prior that correlates the dust density across nearby sightlines. This produces a smoother map, with more isotropic clouds and smaller distance uncertainties, …

Using a sample of nearly 140,000 red clump stars selected from the LAMOST and Gaia Galactic surveys, we have mapped mean vertical velocity $\overline{V_{z}}$ in the $X$-$Y$ plane for a large volume of the Galactic disk (6 $< R < 16$ kpc; $-20 <ϕ< 50^{\circ}$; $|Z| < 1$ kpc). A clear signature where $\overline{V_{z}}$ increases with $R$ is detected for the chemically thin disk. The signature for the thick disk is however not significant, in line with the hot nature of this disk component. For the thin disk, the warp signature shows significant variations in both radial and azimuthal directions,…
For application to surveys of interstellar matter and Galactic structure, we compute new spectrophotometric distances to 139 OB stars frequently used as background targets for UV spectroscopy. Many of these stars have updated spectral types and digital photometry with reddening corrections from the Galactic O-Star (GOS) spectroscopic survey. We compare our new photometric distances to values used in previous IUE and FUSE surveys and to parallax distances derived from Gaia-DR2, after applying a standard (0.03 mas) offset from the quasar celestial reference frame. We find substantial differences…
The Blanco DECam Bulge Survey (BDBS) VIII: Chemo-kinematics in the southern Galactic bulge from 2.3 million red clump stars with Gaia DR3 proper motions
We have exploited Gaia Data Release 2 to study white dwarf members of the Praesepe star cluster. We recovered eleven known white dwarf members (all DA spectral type) plus a new cluster WD never identified before. Two of the eleven known DA objects did not satisfy all quality indicators available in the data release. The remaining nine objects of known spectral type have then been employed to determine their masses (average error of 3-5%) and cooling times (average uncertainty of 5-7\%), by fitting cooling tracks to their colour-magnitude diagram. Assuming the recent Gaia Data Release 2 reddeni…

A probabilistic approach has been used in combination with the parallax data from Gaia (e)DR3 to calibrate Period-Luminosity-(Abundance) (PLZ) Relations covering a wide range of visual to Infrared observations of RR Lyrae stars. Absolute Magnitude Relations are given, derived from the same selection of stars, for $V$, $G$, $I$, $K_\mathrm{s}$ and WISE $W1$ as well as for for the reddening free pseudo-magnitudes $WBV$, $WVI$ and finally also Gaia $WG$. The classical relation between $M_V$ and [Fe/H] is redetermined and as an illustration distances are given to a few selected objects.
We have analyzed the space velocities of stars with the proper motions and trigonometric parallaxes from the Gaia TGAS catalogue in combination with the line-of-sight velocities from the RAVE5 catalogue. In the (V,\sqrt{U^2+2V^2}) velocity plane we have identified three clumps, BB17-1, BB17-2, and BB17-3, in the region of large velocities (V<-150 km/s). The stars of the BB17-1 and BB17-2 clumps are associated with the kinematic groups VelHel-6 and VelHel-7 detected previously by Helmi et al. We give the greatest attention to the BB17-3 clump. The latter is shown to be most closely linked with …
Red clump stars are commonly used to map the reddening and morphology of the inner regions of the Milky Way. We use the new photometric catalogues of the VISTA Variables in the Vía Láctea survey to achieve twice the spatial resolution of previous reddening maps for Galactic longitudes $-10^{\circ}<l<10^{\circ}$ and latitudes $-1.5^{\circ}<b<1.5^{\circ}$. We use these de-reddened catalogues to construct the $K_{s}$ luminosity function around the red clump in the Galactic plane. We show that the secondary peak (fainter than the red clump) detected in these regions does not correspond to the bulg…
Galaxy interactions distort the distribution of baryonic matter and can affect star formation. The nearby Magellanic Clouds are a prime example of an ongoing galaxy interaction process. Here we use the intermediate-age ($\sim1$-$10$ Gyr) red clump stars to map the three-dimensional structure of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) and interpret it within the context of its history of interaction with the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and the Milky Way. Red clump stars are selected from near-infrared colour-magnitude diagrams based on data from the VISTA survey of the Magellanic Clouds. Interstellar…
Parallaxes with an accuracy better than 10% and proper motions from the Gaia DR1 TGAS catalogue, radial velocities from the PCRV, Tycho-2 photometry, PARSEC, MIST, YaPSI, BaSTI isochrones, and the most accurate reddening and extinction estimates have been used to analyze the kinematics of 9543 thin-disk B-F stars as a function of their dereddened color. These stars are located on the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram relative to the isochrones with a high accuracy. This has allowed me to conclude that the reddening and extinction were significantly underestimated in some kinematic studies of other a…
Recently, a deviation of the Gaia TGAS parallaxes from the asteroseismic ones for giants was found. We show that for parallaxes $\varpi<1.5$ mas it can be explained by a selection effect in favour of bright and luminous giants in the Tycho-2 and TGAS catalogues. Another explanation of this deviation seems to be valid for $\varpi>1.5$ mas based on the best extinction estimates: the deviation may be caused not by a bias of parallax, but by an underestimation of the extinction (and, consequently, an overestimation of the calculated absolute magnitude) in the asteroseismic results. We demonstrate …
By combining LAMOST DR4 and Gaia DR2 common red clump stars with age and proper motion, we analyze the amplitude evolution of the stellar warp independently of any assumption with a simple model. The greatest height of the warp disk increases with Galactocentric distance in different populations and it is dependent on the age: the younger stellar populations exhibit stronger warp features than the old ones, accompanied with the warp amplitude $γ({\rm age})$ decreasing with age and its first derivative $\dotγ ({\rm age})$ is different from zero. The azimuth of line of nodes $ϕ_w$ is stable at $…
Red clump stars (RCs) are useful tracers of distances, extinction, chemical abundances, and Galactic structures and kinematics. Accurate estimation of the RC parameters -- absolute magnitude and intrinsic color -- is the basis for obtaining high-precision RC distances. By combining astrometric data from Gaia, spectroscopic data from APOGEE and LAMOST, and multi-band photometric data from Gaia, APASS, Pan-STARRS1, 2MASS, and WISE surveys, we use the Gaussian process regression to train machine learners to derive the multi-band absolute magnitudes $M_λ$ and intrinsic colors $(λ_1-λ_2)_0$ for eac…
We investigate the three-dimensional asymmetrical kinematics and present time stamps of the Milky Way disk between Galactocentric distances of $R=12$ and 15 \,kpc, using red clump stars selected from the LAMOST Galactic survey, also with proper motion measurements provided by the Gaia DR2. We discover velocity substructure above the Galactic plane corresponding to a density dip found recently ("south-middle opposite" density structure[R $\sim$ 12-15 \,kpc, Z $\sim$ 1.5 \,kpc] discovered in \citet{Wang2018b, Wang2018c}) in the radial and azimuthal velocity. For the vertical velocity, we detect …
This study presents the multi-wavelength investigation of the absolute magnitudes and colours of the red clump (RC) stars selected from APOGEE and GALAH DR2 combined catalogue which is complemented with {\it Gaia} DR2 astrometric data and multi-wavelength photometric data of {\it GALEX} GR6/7, SDSS DR7, {\it Gaia} DR2, 2MASS and {\it WISE} sky surveys. The analyses are centred on the different distance estimation methods using {\it Gaia} trigonometric parallaxes, (1/$\varpi$) and Bayes statistics, and chemically defined Galactic disc populations on [$α$/Fe]$\times$[Fe/H] plane. Such investigat…
Observed reddening in the circum-galactic medium (CGM) indicates a significant abundance of small grains, of which the origin is still to be clarified. We examine a possible path of small-grain production through shattering of pre-existing large grains in the CGM. Possible sites where shattering occurs on a reasonable time-scale are cool clumps with hydrogen number density $n_\mathrm{H}\sim 0.1$ cm$^{-3}$ and gas temperature $T_\mathrm{gas}\sim 10^4$ K, which are shown to exist through observations of Mg II absorbers. We calculate the evolution of grain size distribution in physical conditions…

$Context$. Gaia Second Data Release provides precise astrometry and photometry for more than 1.3 billion sources. This catalog opens a new era concerning the characterization of open clusters and test stellar models, paving the way for a better understanding of the disc properties. $Aims$. The aim of the paper is to improve the knowledge of cluster parameters, using only the unprecedented quality of the Gaia photometry and astrometry. $Methods$. We make use of the membership determination based on the precise Gaia astrometry and photometry. We apply anautomated Bayesian tool, BASE-9, to fit st…
We present a detailed photometric and kinematical analysis of poorly studied open cluster IC 1434 using CCD VRI, APASS, and Gaia DR2 database for the first time. BY determining the membership probability of stars, we identified the 238 most probable members with a probability higher than 60% by using proper motion and parallax data as taken from the Gaia DR2 catalog. The mean proper motion of the cluster is obtained as emu_x= - 3.89 +/- 0.19 and emu_y= - 3.34 +/- 0.19 mas/yr in both the directions of right ascension and declination. The radial distribution of member stars provides cluster exte…
