Determining the distances to the Planck Galactic cold clumps (PGCCs) is crucial for the measurement of their physical parameters and the study of their Galactic distribution. Based on two large catalogues of stars with robust distances and reddening estimates from the literature, we have estimated accurate distances to 61 PGCCs in the second Galactic quadrant. For this purpose, we have selected stars along the sightlines overlapping with the cores of the sample clumps and fitted the reddening profiles with a simple reddening model. The typical uncertainties of the resultant distances of these PGCCs are less than 8 per cent. The new estimates differ significantly from the kinematic values, well known to suffer from large errors. With the new distances, we have updated the physical properties including the radii, masses and virial parameters of the cores of the PGCCs.
In order to understand the initial conditions and early evolution of star formation in a wide range of Galactic environments, we carried out an investigation of 64 \textit{Planck} Galactic Cold Clumps (PGCCs) in the second quadrant of the Milky Way. Using the $^{13}$CO and C$^{18}$O $J = 1 - 0$ lines, and 850\,$μ$m continuum observations, we investigated cloud fragmentation and evolution associated with star formation. We extracted 468 clumps and 117 cores from the $^{13}$CO line and 850\,$μ$m continuum maps, respectively. We make use of the Bayesian Distance Calculator and derived the distanc…
Sixty five Planck Galactic cold clumps (PGCCs) from the first quadrant (IQuad) and thirty nine of PGCCs from the Anti-Center direction region (ACent) were observed in $^{12}$CO, $^{13}$CO and C$^{18}$O J=1-0 lines using the PMO 13.7-m telescope. All the targets were detected with all the three lines, except for 12 IQuad and 8 ACent PGCCs without C$^{18}$O detection. Seventy six and 49 velocity components were obtained in IQuad and ACent respectively. One-hundred and forty-six cores were extracted from 76 IQuad clumps and 100 cores from 49 ACent clumps. The average T$_{\mathrm{ex}}$ of IQuad co…
A survey of C2H N=1-0 and N2H+ J=1-0 toward Planck Galactic cold clumps (PGCCs) was performed using the Purple Mountain Observatory's 13.7 m telescope. C2H and N2H+ were chosen to study the chemical evolutionary states of PGCCs. Among 121 observed molecular cores associated with PGCCs, 71 and 58 are detected with C2H N=1-0 and N2H+ J=1-0, respectively. The detected lines of most sources can be fitted with a single component with compatible Vlsr and line widths, which confirms that these PGCC cores are very cold (with gas temperatures 9-21 K) and quiescent while still dominanted by turbulence. …
The low dust temperatures (<14 K) of Planck Galactic Cold Clumps (PGCCs) make them ideal targets to probe the initial conditions and very early phase of star formation. TOP-SCOPE is a joint survey program targeting ~2000 PGCCs in J=1-0 transitions of CO isotopologues and ~1000 PGCCs in 850 micron continuum emisison. The objective of the TOP-SCOPE survey and the joint surveys (SMT 10-m, KVN 21-m and NRO 45-m) is to statistically study the initial conditions occurring during star formation and the evolution of molecular clouds, across a wide range of environments. The observations, data analysis…
We present the first survey of dense gas towards Planck Galactic Cold Clumps (PGCCs). Observations in the J=1-0 transitions of HCO+ and HCN towards 621 molecular cores associated with PGCCs were performed using the Purple Mountain Observatory 13.7-m telescope. Among them, 250 sources have detection, including 230 cores detected in HCO+ and 158 in HCN. Spectra of the J=1-0 transitions from CO, 13CO, and C18O at the centers of the 250 cores were extracted from previous mapping observations to construct a multi-line data set. The significantly low detection rate of asymmetric double-peaked profil…
The Planck Catalogue of Galactic Cold Clumps (PGCC) contains over 13000 sources detected based on their cold dust signature. They are believed to consist of a mixture of quiescent, pre-stellar, and already star-forming objects. We extracted PGCC-type objects from cloud simulations and examined their physical and polarisation properties. The comparison with the PGCC catalogue helps to characterise the PGCC sample and provides valuable tests for numerical simulations of interstellar medium. We used several MHD snapshots to define the density field of our models. Sub-millimetre images of the surf…
Planck Galactic Cold Clumps (PGCCs) possibly represent the early stages of star formation. To understand better the properties of PGCCs, we studied 16 PGCCs in the L1495 cloud with molecular lines and continuum data from Herschel, JCMT/SCUBA-2 and the PMO 13.7 m telescope. Thirty dense cores were identified in 16 PGCCs from 2-D Gaussian fitting. The dense cores have dust temperatures of $T_{\rm d}$ = 11-14 K, and H$_{2}$ column densities of $N_{\rm H_{2}}$ = 0.36-2.5$\times10^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$. We found that not all PGCCs contain prestellar objects. In general, the dense cores in PGCCs are usual…
We present the results from a series of ground-based radio observations toward a Planck Galactic Cold Clump (PGCC), PGCC G108.84-00.81, which is located in one curved filamentary cloud in the vicinity of an extended HII region Sh2-152 and SNR G109.1-1.0. PGCC G108.84-00.81 is mainly composed of two clumps, "G108-N" and "G108-S". In the 850 micron dust continuum emission map, G108-N is shown as one component while G108-S is fragmented into four components. There is no infrared source associated with G108-N while there are two infrared sources (IRS 1 and IRS 2) associated with G108-S. The total …
We are performing a series of observations with ground-based telescopes toward Planck Galactic cold clumps (PGCCs) in the $λ$ Orionis complex in order to systematically investigate the effects of stellar feedback. In the particular case of PGCC G192.32-11.88, we discovered an extremely young Class 0 protostellar object (G192N) and a proto-brown dwarf candidate (G192S). G192N and G192S are located in a gravitationally bound bright-rimmed clump. The velocity and temperature gradients seen in line emission of CO isotopologues indicate that PGCC G192.32-11.88 is externally heated and compressed. G…
We report results of the first study utilizing the ultraviolet capabilities of the Hubble Space Telescope to investigate a sample of Planck Galactic Cold Clump (PGCC) sources. We have selected high-resolution spectra toward 25 stars that contain a multitude of interstellar absorption lines associated with the interstellar medium (ISM) gas within these PGCC sources, including carbon monoxide (CO), C I and O I. By building cloud-component models of the individual absorption components present in these spectra, we can identify and isolate components associated with the PGCC sources, allowing for …
Filamentary structures are common morphological features of the cold, molecular interstellar medium (ISM). Recent studies have discovered massive, hundred-parsec-scale filaments that may be connected to the large-scale, Galactic spiral arm structure. Addressing the nature of these Giant Molecular Filaments (GMFs) requires a census of their occurrence and properties. We perform a systematic search of GMFs in the fourth Galactic quadrant and determine their basic physical properties. We identify GMFs based on their dust extinction signatures in near- and mid-infrared and velocity structure probe…
Based on the 850 $μ$m dust continuum data from SCUBA-2 at James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT), we compare overall properties of Planck Galactic Cold Clumps (PGCCs) in the $λ$ Orionis cloud to those of PGCCs in the Orion A and B clouds. The Orion A and B clouds are well known active star-forming regions, while the $λ$ Orionis cloud has a different environment as a consequence of the interaction with a prominent OB association and a giant Hii region. PGCCs in the $λ$ Orionis cloud have higher dust temperatures ($Td=16.13\pm0.15$ K) and lower values of dust emissivity spectral index ($ β=1.65\pm…

In the third Galactic quadrant (180 < l < 270) of the Milky Way, the Galactic thin disk exhibits a significant warp ---shown both by gas and young stars--- bending down a few kpc below the formal Galactic plane (b=0). This warp shows its maximum at 240, in the direction of the Canis Major constellation. In a series of papers we have traced the detailed structure of this region using open star clusters, putting particular emphasis on the spiral structure of the outer disk. We noticed a conspicuous accumulation of young star clusters within 2-3 kpc from the Sun and close to b=0, that we interpre…
The lack of arm tracers, especially the remote tracers, is one of the most difficult problems preventing us from studying the structure of the Milky Way. Fortunately, with its high-sensitivity CO survey, the Milky Way Imaging Scroll Painting (MWISP) project offers such an opportunity. Since completing about one-third of its mission, an area of l=[100,150] deg, b=[-3,5] deg has nearly been covered. The Outer arm of the Milky Way first clearly revealed its shape in the second galactic quadrant in the form of molecular gas --- this is the first time that the Outer arm has been reported in such a …
Distance measurements to molecular clouds are essential and important. We present directly measured distances to 169 molecular clouds in the fourth quadrant of the Milky Way. Based on the near-infrared photometry from the Two Micron All Sky Survey and the Vista Variables in the Via Lactea Survey, we select red clump stars in the overlapping directions of the individual molecular clouds and infer the bin averaged extinction values and distances to these stars. We track the extinction versus distance profiles of the sightlines toward the clouds and fit them with Gaussian dust distribution models…
We present an analysis of local molecular clouds (-6 <VLSR< 30 km/s, i.e., <1.5 kpc) in the first Galactic quadrant (25.8° <l<49.7° and |b|<5°), a pilot region of the Milky Way Imaging Scroll Painting (MWISP) CO survey. Using the SCIMES algorithm to divide large molecular clouds into moderate-sized ones, we determined distances to 28 molecular clouds with the background-eliminated extinction-parallax (BEEP) method using the Gaia DR2 parallax measurements aided by AG and AV, and the distance ranges from 250 pc to about 1.5 kpc. These incomplete distance samples indicate a linear relationship be…
The discovery of new clear windows in the Galactic plane using the VVV near-IR extinction maps allows the study of the structure of the Milky Way (MW) disk. The ultimate goal of this work is to map the spiral arms in the far side of the MW, which is a relatively unexplored region of our Galaxy, using red clump (RC) giants as distance indicators. We search for near-IR clear windows located at low Galactic latitudes ($|b|< 1$ deg) in the MW disk using the VVV near-IR extinction maps. We have identified two new windows named VVV WIN 1607-5258 and VVV WIN 1475-5877, respectively, that complement t…
We have re-analyzed continuum and recombination lines radio data available in the literature in order to derive the luminosity function (LF) of Galactic HII regions. The study is performed by considering the first and fourth Galactic quadrants independently. We estimate the completeness level of the sample in the fourth quadrant at 5 Jy, and the one in the first quadrant at 2 Jy. We show that the two samples (fourth or first quadrant) include, as well as giant and super-giant HII regions, a significant number of sub-giant sources. The LF is obtained, in each Galactic quadrant, with a generaliz…
We present distances to 76 medium-sized molecular clouds and an extra large-scale one in the second Galactic quadrant ($104.75^\circ <l<150.25^\circ $ and $|b|<5.25^\circ$), 73 of which are accurately measured for the first time. Molecular cloud samples are drawn from $l$-$b$-$V$ space ($-95 < V_{\rm LSR}< 25$ \kms) with the density-based spatial clustering of applications with noise (DBSCAN) algorithm, and distances are measured with the background-eliminated extinction-parallax (BEEP) method using extinctions and Gaia DR2 parallaxes. The range of measured distances to 76 molecular clouds is …
We present the Planck Catalogue of Galactic Cold Clumps (PGCC), an all-sky catalogue of Galactic cold clump candidates detected by Planck. This catalogue is the full version of the Early Cold Core (ECC) catalogue, which was made available in 2011 with the Early Release Compact Source Catalogue (ERCSC) and contained 915 high S/N sources. It is based on the Planck 48 months mission data that are currently being released to the astronomical community. The PGCC catalogue is an observational catalogue consisting exclusively of Galactic cold sources. The three highest Planck bands (857, 545, 353 GHz…
We report a trigonometric parallax measurement with the Very Long Baseline Array for the water maser in the distant high-mass star-forming region G75.30+1.32. This source has a heliocentric distance of 9.25+-0.45 kpc, which places it in the Outer arm in the first Galactic quadrant. It lies 200 pc above the Galactic plane and is associated with a substantial HI enhancement at the border of a large molecular cloud. At a Galactocentric radius of 10.7 kpc, G75.30+1.32 is in a region of the Galaxy where the disk is significantly warped toward the North Galactic Pole. While the star-forming region h…
We search the lambda = 1.1 mm Bolocam Galactic Plane Survey for clumps containing sufficient mass to form ~10^4 M\odot star clusters. 18 candidate massive proto-clusters are identified in the first Galactic quadrant outside of the central kiloparsec. This sample is complete to clumps with mass M(clump) > 10^4 M_sun and radius r < 2.5 pc. The overall Galactic massive cluster formation rate is CFR(M_cluster > 10^4) ~ 5 Myr^-1, which is in agreement with the rates inferred from Galactic open clusters and M31 massive clusters. We find that all massive proto-clusters in the first quadrant are activ…
The Milky Way is one of the very few spiral galaxies known to host large-scale magnetic field reversals. The existence of the field reversal in the first Galactic quadrant near the Sagittarius spiral arm has been well established, yet poorly characterised due to the insufficient number of reliable Faraday depths (FDs) from extragalactic radio sources (EGSs) through this reversal region. We have therefore performed broadband (1-2 GHz) spectro-polarimetric observations with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) to determine the FD values of 194 EGSs in the Galactic longitude range of $20^\ci…
We take advantage of the red clump stars to build the relation of the optical extinction (AV) and distance in each direction of supernova remnants (SNRs) with known extinction in the fourth Galactic quadrant. The distances of 9 SNRs are well determined by this method. Their uncertainties range from 10% to 30%, which is significantly improved for 8 SNRs, G279.0+1.1, G284.3-1.8, G296.1-0.5, G299.2-2.9, G308.4-1.4, G309.2-0.6, G309.8- 2.6, G332.4-0.4. In addition, SNR G284.3-1.8 with the new distance of 5.5 kpc is not likely associated with the PSR J1016-5857 at 3 kpc.
Planck Galactic Cold Clumps (PGCCs) are contemplated to be the ideal targets to probe the early phases of star formation. We have conducted a survey of 72 young dense cores inside PGCCs in the Orion complex with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) at 1.3\,mm (band 6) using three different configurations (resolutions $\sim$ 0$\farcs$35, 1$\farcs$0, and 7$\farcs$0) to statistically investigate their evolutionary stages and sub-structures. We have obtained images of the 1.3\,mm continuum and molecular line emission ($^{12}$CO, and SiO) at an angular resolution of $\sim$ 0$\far…
We present CO, H2, HI and HISA distributions from a set of simulations of grand design spirals including stellar feedback, self-gravity, heating and cooling. We replicate the emission of the 2nd Galactic Quadrant by placing the observer inside the modelled galaxies and post process the simulations using a radiative transfer code, so as to create synthetic observations. We compare the synthetic datacubes to observations of the 2nd Quadrant of the Milky Way to test the ability of the current models to reproduce the basic chemistry of the Galactic ISM, as well as to test how sensitive such galaxy…
Multi-color photometry of the stellar populations in five fields in the third Galactic quadrant centred on the clusters NGC 2215, NGC 2354, Haffner 22, Ruprecht 11, and ESO489SC01 is interpreted in terms of a warped and flared Galactic disk, without resort to an external entity such as the popular Monoceros or Canis Major overdensities. Except for NGC 2215, the clusters are poorly or unstudied previously. The data generate basic parameters for each cluster, including the distribution of stars along the line of sight. We use star counts and photometric analysis, without recourse to Galactic-mod…
We present a pilot HI survey of 17 Planck Galactic Cold Clumps (PGCCs) with the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST). HI Narrow Self-Absorption (HINSA) is an effective method to detect cold HI being mixed with molecular hydrogen H$_2$ and improves our understanding of the atomic to molecular transition in the interstellar medium. HINSA was found in 58\% PGCCs that we observed. The column density of HINSA was found to have an intermediate correlation with that of $^{13}$CO, following $\rm log( N(HINSA)) = (0.52\pm 0.26) log(N_{^{13}CO}) + (10 \pm 4.1) $. HI abundance rel…
We present CO observations toward three large supernova remnants (SNRs) in the third Galactic quadrant using the Purple Mountain Observatory Delingha 13.7m radio telescope. The observations are part of the high-resolution CO survey of the Galactic plane between Galactic longitudes l=-10deg to 250deg and latitudes b=-5deg to 5d. CO emission was detected toward the three SNRs: G205.5+0.5 (Monoceros Nebula), G206.9+2.3 (PKS 0646+06), and G213.0-0.6. Both of SNRs G205.5+0.5 and G213.0-0.6 exhibit the morphological agreement (or spatial correspondences) between the remnant and the surrounding molec…
To pinpoint the peak location of the synchrotron total intensity emission in a spiral arm, we use a map of the spiralarm locations (from the observed arm tangent). Thus In a typical spiral arm in Galactic Quadrant I, we find the peak of the synchrotron radiation to be located about 220 +/-40 pc away from the inner arm edge (hot dust lane) inside the spiral arm. While most of the galactic disk has a clockwise largescale magnetic field, we make a statistical analysis to delimitate more precisely the smaller reverse annulus wiith a counterclockwise galactic magnetic field. We find an annulus widt…
In the inner Galaxy, we statistically find the mean pitch angle of the recently mapped Norma arm in two galactic quadrants (observed tangentially at galactic longitudes near l=328 degrees and near l=20 degrees), using the twin-tangent method, and obtain -13.7 +/-1.4 degrees. We compared with other measurements in the literature. Also, using the latest published data on pitch angle and the latest published data on the radial starting point of the four arms (RGal = 2.2 kpc) in each galactic quadrant, a revised velocity plot of the Norma spiral arm is made, along with other spiral arms in the Mil…
To deepen our understanding of the chemical properties of the Planck Galactic Cold Clump (PGCC) G168.72-15.48, we performed observations of nine molecular species, namely, \ce{c-C3H}, \ce{H2CO}, \ce{HC5N}, \ce{HC7N}, \ce{SO}, \ce{CCH}, \ce{N2H+}, \ce{CH3OH}, and \ce{CH3CCH}, toward two dense cores in PGCC G168.72-15.48 using the Tianma Radio Telescope and Purple Mountain Observatory Telescope. We detected \ce{c-C3H}, \ce{H2CO}, \ce{HC5N}, \ce{N2H+}, \ce{CCH}, and \ce{CH3OH} in both G168-H1 and G168-H2 cores, whereas \ce{HC7N} and \ce{CH3CCH} were detected only in G168-H1 and SO was detected on…
Combining HI data from the Canadian Galactic Plane Survey~(CGPS) and CO data from the Milky Way Imaging Scroll Painting (MWISP) project, we have identified a new segment of a spiral arm between Galactocentric radii of 15 and 19~kpc that apparently lies beyond the Outer Arm in the second Galactic quadrant. Over most of its length, the arm is 400-600 pc thick in $z$. The new arm appears to be the extension of the distant arm recently discovered by Dame & Thaddeus (2011) as well as the Scutum-Centaurus Arm into the outer second quadrant. Our current survey identified a total of 72 molecular cloud…

We report the detection of near-infrared (NIR) [Fe II] (1.644 $μ$m) and H$_{2}$ 1-0 S(1) (2.122 $μ$m) line features associated with Galactic supernova remnants (SNRs) in the first quadrant using two narrowband imaging surveys, UWIFE and UWISH2. Among the total of 79 SNRs fully covered by both surveys, we found 19 [Fe II]-emitting and 19 H$_{2}$-emitting SNRs, giving a detection rate of 24% for each. Eleven SNRs show both emission features. The detection rate of [Fe II] and H$_{2}$ peaks at the Galactic longitude ($l$) of $40^{\circ}$-$50^{\circ}$ and $30^{\circ}$-$40^{\circ}$, respectively, an…
We investigate the magnetic field in an intermediate-velocity filament for which the H$α$ intensity in the WHAM survey correlates with excess Faraday rotation of extragalactic radio sources over the length of the filament from b ~ 20 degr. to b ~ 55 degr. The density-weighted mean magnetic field is 2.8 +/- 0.8 microgauss, derived from rotation measures and an empirical relation between H-alpha emission measure and dispersion measure from Berkhuijsen et al. (2006). In view of the uncertainties in the derived magnetic field strength, we propose an alternative use of the available data, rotation …
We present BVI CCD photometry of 10 northern open clusters, Berkeley 43, Berkeley 45, Berkeley 47, NGC 6846, Berkeley 49, Berkeley 51, Berkeley 89, Berkeley 91, Tombaugh 4 and Berkeley 9, and estimate their fundamental parameters. Eight of the clusters are located in the first galactic quadrant and 2 are in the second. This is the first optical photometry for 8 clusters. All of them are embedded in rich galactic fields and have large reddening towards them (E(B-V) = 1.0 - 2.3 mag). There is a possibility that some of these difficult-to-study clusters may be asterisms rather than physical syste…
We investigated the space velocity components of 6610 red clump (RC) stars in terms of vertical distance, Galactocentric radial distance and Galactic longitude. Stellar velocity vectors are corrected for differential rotation of the Galaxy which is taken into account using photometric distances of RC stars. The space velocity components estimated for the sample stars above and below the Galactic plane are compatible only for the space velocity component in the direction to the Galactic rotation of the thin disc stars. The space velocity component in the direction to the Galactic rotation (V) s…
Machine learning has been successfully applied in varied field but whether it is a viable tool for determining the distance to molecular clouds in the Galaxy is an open question. In the Galaxy, the kinematic distance is commonly employed as the distance to a molecular cloud. However, there is a problem in that for the inner Galaxy, two different solutions, the ``Near'' solution, and the ``Far'' solution, can be derived simultaneously. We attempted to construct a two-class (``Near'' or ``Far'') inference model using a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), a form of deep learning that can capture …
Some important predictions from 4 main models of spiral arm formation are tested here, using observational data acquired for the Milky Way galaxy. Many spiral arm models (density wave, tidal wave, nuclear Lyapunov tube, or dynamic transient wave) have some consistencies with some of the observations, and some inconsistencies. Our 4 tests consist of the relative locations and relative speeds of different arm tracers away from the dust lane, and the global arm pitch angle as obtained over two Galactic quadrants and several Galactic radii, as well as the arm's continuity of shape from Galactic qu…
In the present work we investigate the properties of 18 embedded clusters (ECs). The sample includes 11 previously known clusters and we report the discovery of 7 ECs on WISE images, thus complementing our recent list of 437 new clusters. The main goal is to use such clusters to shed new light on the Galactic structure by tracing the spiral arms with cluster distances. Our results favour a four-armed spiral pattern tracing three arms, Sagitarius-Carina, Perseus, and the Outer arm. The Sagitarius-Carina spiral arm is probed in the borderline of the third and fourth quadrants at a distance from …
In this paper we investigate the nature of 27 star cluster candidates, most of them projected towards the Galactic anticentre. We derive fundamental parameters for 20 confirmed clusters, among these 7 are new identifications. Four of the remaining are uncertain cases that require deeper photometry to establish their nature, and 4 are probably field fluctuations. In addition, we provide a partial census of the open clusters towards the Galactic anticentre. We also include in this study some interesting objects outside the anticentre region, in the second and third Galactic quadrants, mainly in …

In an effort to improve our understanding of the spiral arm structure of the Milky Way, we use Classical Cepheids (CCs) to increase the number of young tracers on the far side of the Galactic disk with accurately determined distances. We use a sample of 30 CCs, discovered using near-infrared photometry from the VISTA Variables in the Vía Láctea survey (VVV) and classified based on their radial velocities and metallicities. We combine them with another 20 CCs from the literature for which VVV photometry is available. The compiled sample of CCs with homogeneously computed distances based on VVV …
We present the Forgotten Quadrant Survey (FQS), an ESO large project that used the 12m antenna of the Arizona Radio Observatory to map the Galactic Plane in the range 220°$<l<$240°and -2.5°$<b<$0°, both in $^{12}$CO(1-0) and $^{13}$CO(1-0), at a spectral resolution of 0.65 km s$^{-1}$ and 0.26 km s$^{-1}$. Our dataset allows us to easily identify how the molecular dense gas is organised at different spatial scales: from the giant clouds with their denser filamentary networks, down to the clumps and cores that host the newborn stars and to obtain reliable estimates of their key physical paramet…
We present the first Herschel PACS and SPIRE photometric observations in a portion of the outer Galaxy ($216.5^{\circ} \lesssim \ell \lesssim 225.5^{\circ}$ and $-2^{\circ} \lesssim b \lesssim 0^{\circ}$) as a part of the Hi-GAL survey. The maps between 70 and 500 $μ$m, the derived column density and temperature maps, and the compact source catalog are presented. NANTEN CO(1-0) line observations are used to derive cloud kinematics and distances, so that we can estimate distance-dependent physical parameters of the compact sources (cores and clumps) having a reliable spectral energy distributio…
Aims: This paper has two main objectives: (1) To determine the intrinsic properties of 16 faint and mostly unstudied open clusters in the poorly known sector of the Galaxy at 270$^\circ-$300$^\circ$, to probe the Milky Way structure in future investigations. (2) To address previously reported systematics in Gaia DR2 parallaxes by comparing the cluster distances derived from photometry with those derived from parallaxes. Methods: Deep UBVI photometry of 16 open clusters was carried out. Observations were reduced and analyzed in an automaticway using the ASteCA package to get individual distance…
New-generation spectroscopic surveys of the Milky Way plane have been revealing the structure of the interstellar medium, allowing the simultaneous study of dense structures from single star-forming objects or systems to entire spiral arms. We present the catalogue of molecular clouds extracted from the $^{13}$CO(1-0) data cubes of the Forgotten Quadrant Survey, which mapped the Galactic plane in the range 220°<l<240°, and -2.5°<b<0°in $^{12}$CO(1-0) and $^{13}$CO(1-0).The catalogue contains 87 molecular clouds for which the main physical parameters such as area, mass, distance, velocity dispe…
Context. The properties of the population of Galactic supernova remnants (SNRs) are essential to our understanding of the dynamics of the interstellar medium (ISM) in the Milky Way. However, the completeness of the catalog of Galactic SNRs is expected to be only ${\sim}30\%$, with on order 700 SNRs yet to be detected. Deep interferometric radio continuum surveys of the Galactic plane help in rectifying this apparent deficiency by identifying low surface brightness SNRs and compact SNRs that have not been detected in previous surveys. However, SNRs are routinely confused with H II regions, whic…
Using 21cm HI observations from the Parkes Radio Telescope's Galactic All-Sky Survey, we measure 255 HI clouds in the lower Galactic halo that are located near the tangent points at 16.9 < l < 35.3 degrees and |b| < 20 degrees. The clouds have a median mass of 700 Msun and a median distance from the Galactic plane of 660 pc. This first Galactic quadrant (QI) region is symmetric to a region of the fourth quadrant (QIV) studied previously using the same data set and measurement criteria. The properties of the individual clouds in the two quadrants are quite similar suggesting that they belong to…
We estimated the galactic model parameters for a set of 20 intermediate-latitude fields with galactic longitudes 0<l<100 and 160<l<240, included in the currently available Data Release 6 (DR6) of SDSS, to explore their possible variation with galactic longitude. The local space densities of the thick disc and halo are almost the same for all fields, <(n_{2}/n_{1})>=6.52% and <(n_{3}/n_{1})>=0.35%, respectively, a result different than the one cited for high-latitude fields. The thin disc's scaleheight is 325 pc in the galactic centre changes to 369 pc in the third quadrant, which confirms the …
We present a large, homogeneous catalogue of molecular clouds within 4 kpc from the Sun at low Galactic latitudes ($|b|$ $<$ 10\degr) with unprecedented accurate distance determinations. Based on the three-dimensional dust reddening map and estimates of colour excesses and distances of over 32 million stars presented in Chen et al, we have identified 567 dust/molecular clouds with a hierarchical structure identification method and obtained their distance estimates by a dust model fitting algorithm. The typical distance uncertainty is less than 5 per cent. As far as we know, this is the first l…
We report the discovery of 25 new open clusters resulting from a search in dense low galactic latitude fields. We also provide, for the first time, structural and astrophysical parameters for the new findings and 34 other recently discovered open clusters using Gaia DR2 data. The candidates were confirmed by jointly inspecting the vector point diagrams and spatial distribution. The discoveries were validated by matching near known objects and comparing their mean astrometric parameters with the available literature. A decontamination algorithm was applied to the three-dimensional astrometric s…
