We exploit a complete sample of 101\,810 {\it Gaia} DR2 giants, selected in Paper I in the space cylinder with a radius of 700 pc around the Sun and a height of $|Z|=1800$ pc, using the {\it Gaia} DR2 parallaxes, $G_\mathrm{BP}$ and $G_\mathrm{RP}$ photometry, and {\it WISE} $W3$ photometry. We explain the spatial variations of the modes of the observables $G_\mathrm{BP}-G_\mathrm{RP}$ and $G_\mathrm{RP}-W3$ by the spatial variations of the corresponding reddenings described in the GM20 3D dust distribution model. Presented in this paper, GM20 is an advanced version of the model introduced by Gontcharov in 2009. GM20 proposes two intersecting dust layers, along the Galactic mid-plane and in the Gould Belt, with exponential vertical and sinusoidal longitudinal variations of the dust spatial density in each layer. The Belt layer is an ellipse, oriented nearly between the centre and anticentre of the Galaxy, and with a semi-major and semi-minor axes of 600 and 146~pc, respectively. $G_\mathrm{BP}-G_\mathrm{RP}$ and $G_\mathrm{RP}-W3$ give similar solutions, but different equatorial layer scale heights of $150\pm15$ and $180\pm15$~pc, respectively, and $(G_\mathrm{BP}-G_\mathrm{RP})_0=(1.14\pm0.01)-(0.022\pm0.010)\,|Z|$, $(G_\mathrm{RP}-W3)_0=(1.44\pm0.01)-(0.015\pm0.010)\,|Z|$, where $Z$ is in kpc. We compare GM20 with several 3D reddening models and maps in their ability to predict the observed colour modes. GM20 and the 3D map by Gontcharov appear to be the best among the models and maps, respectively. However, the most reliable models and maps mainly disagree only in their estimates of low reddening, including the reddening across the whole dust layer.
We compare eight sources of reddening and extinction estimates for approximately 60,000 {\it Gaia} DR1 Tycho--Gaia Astrometric Solution (TGAS) main sequence stars younger than 3~Gyr with a relative error of the {\it Gaia} parallax less than 0.1. For the majority of the stars, the best 2D dust emission-based reddening maps show considerable differences between the reddening to infinity and the one calculated to the stellar distance using the barometric law of the dust distribution. This proves that the majority of the TGAS stars are embedded in to the Galactic dust layer and a proper 3D treatme…
Gaia DR1 Tycho-Gaia Astrometric Solution parallaxes, Tycho-2 photometry and reddening/extinction estimates from nine data sources for 38074 giants within 415 pc from the Sun are used to compare their position in the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram with theoretical estimates, which are based on the PARSEC and MIST isochrones and the TRILEGAL model of the Galaxy with its parameters being widely varied. We conclude that (1) some systematic errors of the reddening/extinction estimates are the main uncertainty in this study; (2) any emission-based 2D reddening map cannot give reliable estimates of redd…
The vast majority of Gaia DR1 Tycho-Gaia astrometric solution (TGAS) stars are located within a distance of 1200 pc from the Sun and up to 600 pc within the Galactic plane. Complete usage of their parallaxes is possible only if their reddening and interstellar extinction are known. We obtained those from a comparison of the eight most accurate and complete 3D maps of reddening and extinction in the considered space. We analyzed the statistics of the maps and their differences in the cells of $20\times20\times20$ pc in the whole considered space. The comparison of the maps in the cells outside …
Precise correction of dust reddening is fundamental to obtain the intrinsic parameters of celestial objects. The Schlegel et al. (SFD) and the Planck 2D extinction maps are widely used for the reddening correction. In this work, using accurate reddening determinations of about two million stars from the Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) data release 5 (DR5) and Gaia DR2, we check and calibrate the SFD and Planck maps in the middle and high Galactic latitudes. The maps show similar precision in reddening correction. We find small yet significant spatially depend…
M dwarfs are the dominating type of stars in the solar neighbourhood. They serve as excellent tracers for the study of the distribution and properties of the nearby interstellar dust. In this work, we aim to obtain high accuracy reddening values of M dwarf stars from the Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) Data Release 8 (DR8). Combining the LAMOST spectra with the high-quality optical photometry from the Gaia Early Data Release 3 (Gaia EDR3), we have estimated the reddening values $E(G_{\rm BP}-G_{\rm RP})$ of 641,426 M dwarfs with the machine-learning algorithm…
We consider a complete sample of 101810 giants with Gaia DR2 parallaxes $\varpi$ within the red clump domain of the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram in the space cylinder with a radius of 700 pc around the Sun and a height of $|Z|=1800$ pc. We use the Gaia DR2 $G_\mathrm{BP}$, $G_\mathrm{RP}$ and WISE $W3$ photometry. We describe the spatial variations of the modes of the observables $G_\mathrm{BP}-G_\mathrm{RP}$, $G_\mathrm{RP}-W3$, $G_\mathrm{BP}+5+5\,\log_{10}\varpi$, $G_\mathrm{RP}+5+5\,\log_{10}\varpi$, and $W3+5+5\,\log_{10}\varpi$ by extinction and reddening in combination with linear vertic…
We use the Balmer decrements of the broad-line regions (BLRs) and narrow-line regions (NLRs) of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) as reddening indicators to investigate the location of the dust for four samples of AGNs with reliable estimates of the NLR contribution to the Balmer lines. Intercomparison of the NLR and BLR Balmer decrements indicates that the reddening of the NLR sets a lower limit to the reddening of the BLR. Almost no objects have high NLR reddening but low BLR reddening. The reddening of the BLR is often substantially greater than the reddening of the NLR. The BLR reddening is co…

We combine LAMOST DR7 spectroscopic data and Gaia EDR3 photometric data to construct high-quality giant (0.7 $< (BP-RP) <$ 1.4) and dwarf (0.5 $< (BP-RP) < $ 1.5) samples in the high Galactic latitude region, with precise corrections for magnitude-dependent systematic errors in the Gaia photometry and careful reddening corrections using empirically determined color- and reddening-dependent coefficients. We use the two samples to build metallicity-dependent stellar loci of Gaia colors for giants and dwarfs, respectively. For a given $(BP-RP)$ color, a one dex change in [Fe/H] results in about a…
We have obtained accurate dust reddening from far-ultraviolet (UV) to the mid-infrared (IR) for up to 5 million stars by the star-pair algorithm based on LAMOST stellar parameters along with GALEX, Pan-STARRS 1, Gaia, SDSS, 2MASS, and WISE photometric data. The typical errors are between 0.01-0.03 mag for most colors. We derived the empirical reddening coefficients for 21 colors both in the traditional (single valued) way and as a function of Teff and E(B-V) by using the largest samples of accurate reddening measurements, together with the extinction values from Schlegel et al. The correspondi…
Context: Deep GALEX UV data show that the extreme outskirts of some spiral galaxies are teeming with star formation. Such young stellar populations evolving so far away from the bulk of their host galaxies challenge our overall understanding of how star formation proceeds at galactic scales. It is at present unclear whether our own Milky Way may also exhibit ongoing and recent star formation beyond the conventional edge of the disk ($\sim 15$ kpc). Aims: Using \textit{Gaia} DR2 data, we aim to determine if such a population is present in the Galactic halo, beyond the nominal radius of the Milk…
Aims: Highly resolved maps of the local Galactic dust are an important ingredient for sky emission models. In nearly the whole electromagnetic spectrum one can see imprints of dust, many of which originate from dust clouds within 300pc. Having a detailed 3D reconstruction of these local dust clouds enables detailed studies, helps to quantify the impact on other observables and is a milestone necessary to enable larger reconstructions, as every sightline for more distant objects will pass through the local dust. Methods: To infer the dust density we use parallax and absorption estimates publish…
Circumstellar dust is formed and evolved within the envelope of evolved stars, including Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) and Red Supergiant (RSG). The extinction of stellar light by circumstellar dust is vital for interpreting RSG/AGB observations and determining high-mass RSG progenitors of core-collapse supernovae. Nevertheless, circumstellar dust properties are not well understood. Modern understanding of dust evolution suggests that intense stellar radiation can radically change the dust properties across the circumstellar envelope through the RAdiative Torque Disruption (RAT-D) mechanism. I…
We present high-resolution maps of the dust reddening in the Magellanic Clouds (MCs). The maps cover the Large and Small Magellanic Cloud (LMC and SMC) area and have a spatial angular resolution between $\sim$ 26 arcsec and 55 arcmin. Based on the data from the optical and near-infrared (IR) photometric surveys, including the Gaia Survey, the SkyMapper Southern Survey (SMSS), the Survey of the Magellanic Stellar History (SMASH), the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) and the near-infrared $YJK_{\rm{S}}$ VISTA survey of the Magellanic Clouds system (VMC), we have obtained multi-band photometric …
We present a map of the dust reddening to 4.5 kpc derived from Pan-STARRS1 stellar photometry. The map covers almost the entire sky north of declination -30 degrees at a resolution of 7' to 14', and is based on the estimated distances and reddenings to more than 500 million stars. The technique is designed to map dust in the Galactic plane, where many other techniques are stymied by the presence of multiple dust clouds at different distances along each line of sight. This reddening-based dust map agrees closely with the Schlegel, Finkbeiner, and Davis (SFD; 1998) far-infrared emission-based du…
We present new three-dimensional (3D) interstellar dust reddening maps of the Galactic plane in three colours, E(G-Ks), E(Bp-Rp) and E(H-Ks). The maps have a spatial angular resolution of 6 arcmin and covers over 7000 deg$^2$ of the Galactic plane for Galactic longitude 0 deg $<$ $l$ $<$ 360 deg and latitude $|b|$ $<$ $10$ deg. The maps are constructed from robust parallax estimates from the Gaia Data Release 2 (Gaia DR2) combined with the high-quality optical photometry from the Gaia DR2 and the infrared photometry from the 2MASS and WISE surveys. We estimate the colour excesses, E(G-Ks), E(B…
We present a three-dimensional map of interstellar dust reddening, covering three-quarters of the sky out to a distance of several kiloparsecs, based on Pan-STARRS 1 and 2MASS photometry. The map reveals a wealth of detailed structure, from filaments to large cloud complexes. The map has a hybrid angular resolution, with most of the map at an angular resolution of 3.4' to 13.7', and a maximum distance resolution of ~25%. The three-dimensional distribution of dust is determined in a fully probabilistic framework, yielding the uncertainty in the reddening distribution along each line of sight, a…
We performed detailed photometric and astrometric analyses of the open star clusters Berkeley 68 and Stock 20. This was based on ground-based CCD UBV photometric data complemented by space-based Gaia Data Release 3 photometry and astrometry. 198 stars were identified as likely cluster members for Berkeley 68 and 51 for Stock 20. Two-color diagrams were used to derive the reddening and photometric metallicity for each cluster. The reddening for Berkeley 68 is $E(B-V)=0.520 \pm 0.032$ and $0.400 \pm 0.048$ mag for Stock 20. Photometric metallicity [Fe/H] is $-0.13 \pm 0.08$ dex for Berkeley 68, …
In this work the optical properties of amorphous carbon (amC) dust condensed around carbon(C)-stars are constrained by comparing the observations for the Large Magellanic Cloud C-stars from the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) and from the Gaia data release 2 (DR2) with the synthetic photometry obtained by computing dust growth and radiative transfer in their circumstellar envelopes. The set of optical constants of amC dust considered have been pre-selected according to their ability to reproduce the infrared colour-colour diagrams in the Small Magellanic Cloud. Only two combinations of the o…

We calibrated a technique to measure dust attenuation in star-forming galaxies. The technique utilizes the stellar-wind lines in Wolf-Rayet stars, which are widely observed in galaxy spectra. The He II 1640 and 4686 features are recombination lines whose ratio is largely determined by atomic physics. Therefore they can serve as a stellar dust probe in the same way as the Balmer lines are used as a nebular probe. We measured the strength of the He II 1640 line in 97 Wolf-Rayet stars in the Galaxy and the Large Magellanic Cloud. The reddening corrected fluxes follow a tight correlation with a fi…
Archival Vilnius CCD photometric observations are presented for the heavily reddened star cluster Melotte 105, resulting in colour-magnitude diagrams and spectral class estimates. There is considerable lack of agreement between studies for reddening, age, and distance for this cluster explaining why the archival data are being made available by this paper. The derived reddening E(B-V =0.34 +/- 0.04 mag and the distance V-M =12.9 +/- 0.3 mag directly from the Vilnius photometry. The Gaia Data Release 2 (DR2) and Vilnius photometric data of the cluster were used to estimate the structural parame…
We present a method to infer reddenings and distances to stars, based only on their broad-band photometry, and show how this method can be used to produce a three-dimensional dust map of the Galaxy. Our method samples from the full probability density function of distance, reddening and stellar type for individual stars, as well as the full uncertainty in reddening as a function of distance in the 3D dust map. We incorporate prior knowledge of the distribution of stars in the Galaxy and the detection limits of the survey. For stars in the Pan-STARRS 1 (PS1) 3 pi survey, we demonstrate that our…

We present a new three-dimensional map of dust reddening, based on Gaia parallaxes and stellar photometry from Pan-STARRS 1 and 2MASS. This map covers the sky north of a declination of -30 degrees, out to a distance of several kiloparsecs. This new map contains three major improvements over our previous work. First, the inclusion of Gaia parallaxes dramatically improves distance estimates to nearby stars. Second, we incorporate a spatial prior that correlates the dust density across nearby sightlines. This produces a smoother map, with more isotropic clouds and smaller distance uncertainties, …

We present measurements of reddening due to dust using the colors of stars in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). We measure the color of main sequence turn-off stars by finding the "blue tip" of the stellar locus: the prominent blue edge in the distribution of stellar colors. The method is sensitive to color changes of order 18, 12, 7, and 8 mmag of reddening in the colors u-g, g-r, r-i, and i-z, respectively, in regions measuring 90' by 14'. We present maps of the blue tip colors in each of these bands over the entire SDSS footprint, including the new dusty southern Galactic cap data provid…
For application to surveys of interstellar matter and Galactic structure, we compute new spectrophotometric distances to 139 OB stars frequently used as background targets for UV spectroscopy. Many of these stars have updated spectral types and digital photometry with reddening corrections from the Galactic O-Star (GOS) spectroscopic survey. We compare our new photometric distances to values used in previous IUE and FUSE surveys and to parallax distances derived from Gaia-DR2, after applying a standard (0.03 mas) offset from the quasar celestial reference frame. We find substantial differences…
We explore variations of the dust extinction law of the Milky Way by selecting stars from the Swift/UVOT Serendipitous Source Catalogue, cross-matched with Gaia DR2 and 2MASS to produce a sample of 10,452 stars out to ~4kpc with photometry covering a wide spectral window. The near ultraviolet passbands optimally encompass the 2175A bump, so that we can simultaneously fit the net extinction, quoted in the V band (A$_V$), the steepness of the wavelength dependence ($δ$) and the bump strength (E$_b$). The methodology compares the observed magnitudes with theoretical stellar atmospheres from the m…
We have exploited Gaia Data Release 2 to study white dwarf members of the Praesepe star cluster. We recovered eleven known white dwarf members (all DA spectral type) plus a new cluster WD never identified before. Two of the eleven known DA objects did not satisfy all quality indicators available in the data release. The remaining nine objects of known spectral type have then been employed to determine their masses (average error of 3-5%) and cooling times (average uncertainty of 5-7\%), by fitting cooling tracks to their colour-magnitude diagram. Assuming the recent Gaia Data Release 2 reddeni…
Parallaxes with an accuracy better than 10% and proper motions from the Gaia DR1 TGAS catalogue, radial velocities from the PCRV, Tycho-2 photometry, PARSEC, MIST, YaPSI, BaSTI isochrones, and the most accurate reddening and extinction estimates have been used to analyze the kinematics of 9543 thin-disk B-F stars as a function of their dereddened color. These stars are located on the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram relative to the isochrones with a high accuracy. This has allowed me to conclude that the reddening and extinction were significantly underestimated in some kinematic studies of other a…
SN 2014J in M82 is the closest detected Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) in at least 28 years and perhaps in 410 years. Despite its small distance of 3.3 Mpc, SN 2014J is surprisingly faint, peaking at V = 10.6 mag, and assuming a typical SN Ia luminosity, we infer an observed visual extinction of A_V = 2.0 +/- 0.1 mag. But this picture, with R_V = 1.6 +/- 0.2, is too simple to account for all observations. We combine 10 epochs (spanning a month) of HST/STIS ultraviolet through near-infrared spectroscopy with HST/WFC3, KAIT, and FanCam photometry from the optical to the infrared and 9 epochs of high-…
Recently, a deviation of the Gaia TGAS parallaxes from the asteroseismic ones for giants was found. We show that for parallaxes $\varpi<1.5$ mas it can be explained by a selection effect in favour of bright and luminous giants in the Tycho-2 and TGAS catalogues. Another explanation of this deviation seems to be valid for $\varpi>1.5$ mas based on the best extinction estimates: the deviation may be caused not by a bias of parallax, but by an underestimation of the extinction (and, consequently, an overestimation of the calculated absolute magnitude) in the asteroseismic results. We demonstrate …
We present a simultaneous detection of gravitational magnification and dust reddening effects due to galactic halos and large-scale structure. The measurement is based on correlating the brightness of ~85,000 quasars at z>1 with the position of 20 million galaxies at z~0.3 derived from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and is used to constrain the galaxy-mass and galaxy-dust correlation functions up to cosmological scales. The presence of dust is detected from 20 kpc to several Mpc, and we find its projected density to follow: Sigma_dust ~ theta^-0.8, a distribution similar to mass. The amount of d…
We have used a combination of broad-band near-infrared and optical Johnson-Cousins photometry to study the dust properties in the line of sight to the Galactic globular cluster M4. We have investigated the reddening effects in terms of absolute strength and variation across the cluster field, as well as the form of the reddening law defined by the type of dust. Here, we determine the ratio of absolute to selective extinction (R_V) in the line of sight towards M4, which is known to be a useful indicator for the type of dust and therefore characterizes the applicable reddening law. Our method is…
This work employs high-quality {\em Hubble Space Telescope} ({\em HST}) Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) F606W and F814W photometry to correct for the differential reddening affecting the colour-magnitude diagram (CMD) of the poorly-studied globular cluster (GC) Palomar\,2. Differential reddening is taken into account by assuming that morphological differences among CMDs extracted across the field of view of Palomar\,2 correspond essentially to shifts (quantified in terms of $δE(B-V)$) along the reddening vector due to a non-uniform dust distribution. The average reddening difference over all…
We present a new 3D map of interstellar dust reddening, covering three quarters of the sky (declinations greater than -30 degrees) out to a distance of several kiloparsecs. The map is based on high-quality stellar photometry of 800 million stars from Pan-STARRS 1 and 2MASS. We divide the sky into sightlines containing a few hundred stars each, and then infer stellar distances and types, along with the line-of-sight dust distribution. Our new map incorporates a more accurate average extinction law and an additional 1.5 years of Pan-STARRS 1 data, tracing dust to greater extinctions and at highe…

We present a detailed analysis of 317 $2.0 \leq z \leq 2.7$ star-forming galaxies from the Keck Baryonic Structure Survey (KBSS). Using complementary spectroscopic observations with Keck/LRIS and Keck/MOSFIRE, as well as spectral energy distribution (SED) fits to broadband photometry, we examine the joint rest-UV and rest-optical properties of the same galaxies, including stellar and nebular dust attenuation, metallicity, and star formation rate (SFR). The inferred parameters of the stellar population (reddening, age, SFR, and stellar mass) are strongly dependent on the details of the assumed …

$Context$. Gaia Second Data Release provides precise astrometry and photometry for more than 1.3 billion sources. This catalog opens a new era concerning the characterization of open clusters and test stellar models, paving the way for a better understanding of the disc properties. $Aims$. The aim of the paper is to improve the knowledge of cluster parameters, using only the unprecedented quality of the Gaia photometry and astrometry. $Methods$. We make use of the membership determination based on the precise Gaia astrometry and photometry. We apply anautomated Bayesian tool, BASE-9, to fit st…
We present a detailed photometric and kinematical analysis of poorly studied open cluster IC 1434 using CCD VRI, APASS, and Gaia DR2 database for the first time. BY determining the membership probability of stars, we identified the 238 most probable members with a probability higher than 60% by using proper motion and parallax data as taken from the Gaia DR2 catalog. The mean proper motion of the cluster is obtained as emu_x= - 3.89 +/- 0.19 and emu_y= - 3.34 +/- 0.19 mas/yr in both the directions of right ascension and declination. The radial distribution of member stars provides cluster exte…
Using spectroscopically selected galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey we present a detection of reddening due to dust in the circumgalactic medium of galaxies. We detect the mean change in the colors of "standard crayons" correlated with the presence of foreground galaxies at z ~0.05 as a function of angular separation. Following Peek & Graves (2010), we create standard crayons using passively evolving galaxies corrected for Milky Way reddening and color-redshift trends, leading to a sample with as little as 2% scatter in color. We devise methods to ameliorate possible systematic effects…
The dust attenuation for a sample of $\sim$10000 local ($z\lesssim0.1$) star forming galaxies is constrained as a function of their physical properties. We utilize aperture-matched multi-wavelength data available from the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) to ensure that regions of comparable size in each galaxy are being analyzed. We follow the method of Calzetti et al. (1994) and characterize the dust attenuation through the UV power-law index, $β$, and the dust optical depth, which is quantified using the difference in Balmer emission line optical dept…
We conduct a spectroscopic search of quasars observed by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) with broad absorption line (BAL) troughs due to Mg II and troughs due to Fe II that simultaneously exhibit strong Balmer narrow emission lines (NELs). We find that in a redshift range of 0.4 less than or equal to z less than or equal to 0.9 approximately 23 of the 70 Mg II BALs and 4 of a subset of 15 Fe II BALs exhibit strong Balmer emission. We also find significant fractions of Mg II BALs (approximately 23%) and those Mg II BALs with Fe II troughs (approximately 27%) have strong continuum reddening,…
Globular clusters (GCs) are important tools to understand the formation and evolution of the Milky Way (MW). The known MW sample is still incomplete, so the discovery of new GC candidates and the confirmation of their nature are crucial for the census of the MW GC system. Our goal is to confirm the physical nature of two GC candidates: Patchick99 and TBJ3, located towards the Galactic bulge. We use public data in the near-IR from the VVV, VVVX and 2MASS along the with deep optical data from the Gaia DR2, in order to estimate their main physical parameters: reddening, extinction, distance, lumi…
We estimate the abundance of dust in damped Lyman-α absorbers (DLAs) by statistically measuring the excess reddening they induce on their background quasars. We detect systematic reddening behind DLA consistent with the SMC type reddening curve, but it is inconsistent with the Milky Way type reddening. We find that the derived dust-to-gas ratio is, on average, inversely proportional to the column density of neutral hydrogen, implying that the amount of dust is constant, irrespective of the column density of hydrogen. It means that the average metallicity is inversely proportional to the column…
Interstellar dust is still the dominant uncertainty in Astronomy, limiting precision in e.g., cosmological distance estimates and models of how light is re-processed within a galaxy. When a foreground galaxy serendipitously overlaps a more distant one, the latter backlights the dusty structures in the nearer foreground galaxy. Such an overlapping or occulting galaxy pair can be used to measure the distribution of dust in the closest galaxy with great accuracy. The STARSMOG program uses HST observation of occulting galaxy pairs to accurately map the distribution of dust in foreground galaxies i…
We present new photometry and analysis of the twelve variable stars (nine RR Lyrae, three SX Phoenicis) belonging to the Sagittarius globular cluster Arp 2. Of the nine RR Lyrae stars in the cluster, eight are RRab and one is RRc. From the RRab stars, we determined a mean period of $\langle P_{ab}\rangle=0.581\pm0.047$ days, where the error is the standard error of the mean. This places Arp 2 at the border between the Oosterhoff I and Oosterhoff-Int clusters. Using the $V$-band data from the RR Lyrae stars, a distance modulus of $(m-M)_0=17.24\pm0.17$ was determined. From the $I$-band data, we…
