For a sequence $\{X_{n}, \, n \geqslant 1 \}$ of nonnegative random variables where $\max[\min(X_{n} - s,t),0]$, $t > s \geqslant 0$, satisfy a moment inequality, sufficient conditions are given under which $\sum_{k=1}^n (X_k - \mathbb{E} \, X_k)/b_n \overset{\mathrm{a.s.}}{\longrightarrow} 0$. Our statement allows us to obtain a strong law of large numbers for sequences of pairwise negatively quadrant dependent random variables under sharp normalising constants.
We consider complete convergence and closely related Hsu-Robbins-Erdos-Spitzer-Baum-Katz series for sums whose terms are elements of a linear 2-nd order autoregressive sequences of random variables and prove sufficient conditions for the convergence of this series.
In the paper, upper bounds for the rate of convergence in laws of large numbers for mixed Poisson random sums are constructed. As a measure of the distance between the limit and pre-limit laws, the Zolotarev $ζ$-metric is used. The obtained results extend the known convergence rate estimates for geometric random sums (in the famous R{é}nyi theorem) to a considerably wider class of random indices with mixed Poisson distributions including, e. g., those with the (generalized) negative binomial distribution.
We investigate the complete $p$-th moment convergence for weighted sums of independent, identically distributed random variables under sublinear expectations space. Using moment inequality and truncation methods, we prove the equivalent conditions of complete $p$-th moment convergence of weighted sums of independent, identically distributed random variables under sublinear expectations space, which complement the corresponding results obtained in Guo and Shan (2020).
The complete convergence for weighted sums of sequences of independent, identically distributed random variables under sublinear expectations space was studied. By moment inequality and truncation methods, we establish the equivalent conditions of complete convergence for weighted sums of sequences of independent, identically distributed random variables under sublinear expectations space. The results extend the corresponding results obtained by Guo (2012) to those for sequences of independent, identically distributed random variables under sublinear expectations space.
For moving average processes with random coefficients and heavy-tailed innovations that are weakly dependent in the sense of strong mixing and local dependence condition $D'$ we study joint functional convergence of partial sums and maxima. Under the assumption that all partial sums of the series of coefficients are a.s. bounded between zero and the sum of the series we derive a functional limit theorem in the space of $\mathbb{R}^{2}$-valued càdlàg functions on $[0, 1]$ with the Skorokhod weak $M_{2}$ topology.
In this work we prove an asymptotic result, that under some conditions on the involved distribution functions, is valid for any Oppenheim expansion, extending a classical result proven by W. Vervaat in 1972 for denominators of the Luroth case. Furthermore, we study the convergence in distribution of weighted sums of a sequence of independent random variables. Although the result is of its own interest, in the present setting it is used to prove convergence in distribution of specific sequences of random variables generalizing known results obtained for Luroth random variables.
We study the asymptotic behaviour of Bahadur-Kiefer processes that are generated by summing partial sums of (weakly or strongly dependent) random variables and their renewals. Known results for i.i.d. case will be extended to dependent cases.
We show, how the classical Berry-Esseen theorem for normal approximation may be used to derive rates of convergence for random sums of centerd, real-valued random variables with respect to a certain class of probability metrics, including the Kolmogorov and the Wasserstein distances. This technique is applied to several examples, including the approximation by a Laplace distribution of a geometric sum of centered random variables with finite third moment, where a concrete Berry-Esseen bound is derived. This bound reduces to a bound of the supposedly optimal order $\sqrt{p}$ in the i.i.d. case.
In this work, conditions are provided under which a normed double sum of independent random elements in a real separable Rademacher type $p$ Banach space converges completely to $0$ in mean of order $p$. These conditions for the complete convergence in mean of order $p$ are shown to provide an exact characterization of Rademacher type $p$ Banach spaces. In case the Banach space is not of Rademacher type $p$, it is proved that the complete convergence in mean of order $p$ of a normed double sum implies a strong law of large numbers.
In this paper, we prove a Berry--Esseen bound with optimal order for self-normalized sums of local dependent random variables under some mild dependence conditions. The proof is based on Stein's method and a randomized concentration inequality. As applications, we obtain optimal Berry--Esseen bounds for $m$-dependent random variables and graph dependency.
Let $\{X, X_n, n\geq 1\}$ be a sequence of independent identically distributed non-degenerate random variables. Put $S_0=0, S_n = \sum^n_{i=1} X_i$ and $V_n^2=\sum^n_{i=1} X_i^2, n\ge 1.$ A weak convergence theorem is established for the self-normalized partial sums processes $\{S_{[nt]}/V_n, 0\le t\le 1\}$ when $X$ belongs to the domain of attraction of a stable law with index $α\in (0,2]$. The respective limiting distributions of the random variables ${\max_{1\le i\le n}|X_i|}/{S_n}$ and ${\max_{1\le i\le n}|X_i|}/{V_n}$ are also obtained under the same condition.
Two counterexamples, addressing questions raised in \cite{AD} and \cite{PZ}, are provided. Both counterexamples are related to chaoses. Let $F_n=Y_n+Z_n$. It may be that $F_n\overset{a.s.}\longrightarrow 0$, $F_n\overset{L_{2+δ}}\longrightarrow 0$ and $E\bigl\{\sup_n\,\abs{F_n}^δ\bigr\}<\infty$, where $δ>0$ and $Y_n$ and $Z_n$ belong to chaoses of uniformly bounded degree, and yet $Y_n$ fails to converge to 0 a.s.
In this paper, we obtain some results on precise large deviations for non-random and random sums of widely dependent random variables with common dominatedly varying tail distribution or consistently varying tail distribution on $(-\infty,\infty)$. Then we apply the results to reinsurance and insurance and give some asymptotic estimates on proportional reinsurance, random-time ruin probability and the finite-time ruin probability.
We prove that if a rectangular matrix with uniformly small entries and approximately orthogonal rows is applied to the independent standardized random variables with uniformly bounded third moments, then the empirical CDF of the resulting partial sums converges to the normal CDF with probability one. This implies almost sure convergence of empirical periodograms, almost sure convergence of spectra of circulant and reverse circulant matrices, and almost sure convergence of the CDF's generated from independent random variables by independent random orthogonal matrices. For special trigonometric …
In this paper we give new deviation inequalities of Bernstein's type for the partial sums of weakly dependent time series. The loss from the independent case is studied carefully. We give non mixing examples such that dynamical systems and Bernoulli shifts for whom our deviation inequalities hold. The proofs are based on the blocks technique and different coupling arguments.
Given a triangular array $\left\{X_{n,k}, \, 1 \leqslant k \leqslant n, n \geqslant 1 \right\}$ of random variables satisfying $\mathbb{E} \lvert X_{n,k} \rvert^{p} < \infty$ for some $p \geqslant 1$ and sequences $\{b_{n} \}$, $\{c_{n} \}$ of positive real numbers, we shall prove that $\sum_{n=1}^\infty c_n \mathbb{E} \left[ |\sum_{k=1}^n (X_{n,k} - \mathbb{E} \, X_{n,k})| / b_n - \varepsilon \right]_+^p < \infty$, where $x_+ = \max(x,0)$. Our results are announced in a general setting, allowing us to obtain the convergence of the series in question under various types of dependence.
We present some product representations for random variables with the Linnik, Mittag-Leffler and Weibull distributions and establish the relationship between the mixing distributions in these representations. Based on these representations, we prove some limit theorems for a wide class of rather simple statistics constructed from samples with random sized including, e. g., random sums of independent random variables with finite variances, maximum random sums, extreme order statistics, in which the Linnik and Mittag-Leffler distributions play the role of limit laws. Thus we demonstrate that the…
This paper deals with rates of convergence in the strong law of large numbers, in the Baum-Katz form, for partial sums of Banach space valued random variables. The results are then applied to solve similar problems for weighted partial sums of conditional expectations. They are further used to treat partial sums of powers of a reversible Markov chain operator. The method of proof is based on martingale approximation. The conditions are expressed in terms moments of the individual summands.
Let $\{X_n;n\ge 1\}$ be a sequence of independent random variables on a probability space $(Ω, \mathcal{F}, P)$ and $S_n=\sum_{k=1}^n X_k$. It is well-known that the almost sure convergence, the convergence in probability and the convergence in distribution of $S_n$ are equivalent. In this paper, we prove similar results for the independent random variables under the sub-linear expectations, and give a group of sufficient and necessary conditions for these convergence. For proving the results, the Levy and Kolmogorov maximal inequalities for independent random variables under the sub-linear ex…
We prove a central limit theorem for linear triangular arrays under weak dependence conditions. Our result is then applied to the study of dependent random variables sampled by a $\bbZ$-valued transient random walk. This extends the results obtained by Guillotin-Plantard & Schneider (2003). An application to parametric estimation by random sampling is also provided.
Stein's method is used to approximate sums of discrete and locally dependent random variables by a centered and symmetric Binomial distribution. Under appropriate smoothness properties of the summands, the same order of accuracy as in the Berry-Essen Theorem is achieved. The approximation of the total number of points of a point processes is also considered. The results are applied to the exceedances of the $r$-scans process and to the Matérn hardcore point process type I.
Non-uniform estimates are obtained for Poisson, compound Poisson, translated Poisson, negative binomial and binomial approximations to sums of of m-dependent integer-valued random variables. Estimates for Wasserstein metric also follow easily from our results. The results are then exemplified by the approximation of Poisson binomial distribution, 2-runs and $m$-dependent $(k_1,k_2)$-events.
For a sequence of identically distributed negatively associated random variables $\{X_n; n\geq 1\}$ with partial sums $S_n=\sum_{i=1}^nX_i, n\geq 1$, refinements are presented of the classical Baum-Katz and Lai complete convergence theorems. More specifically, necessary and sufficient moment conditions are provided for complete moment convergence of the form $$ \sum_{n \ge n_0} n^{r -2 -\frac{1}{pq}} a_n E(\max_{1 \le k \le n}|S_k|^{\frac{1}{q}} - εb_n^{\frac{1}{pq}})^+ < \infty $$ to hold where $r>1, q>0$ and either $n_0=1, 0<p<2, a_n=1, b_n=n$ or $n_0=3, p=2, a_n=(\log n)^{-\frac{1}{2q}}, b_…
We prove a central limit theorem for random sums of the form $\sum_{i=1}^{N_n} X_i$, where $\{X_i\}_{i \geq 1}$ is a stationary $m-$dependent process and $N_n$ is a random index independent of $\{X_i\}_{i\geq 1}$. Our proof is a generalization of Chen and Shao's result for i.i.d. case and consequently we recover their result. Also a variation of a recent result of Shang on $m-$dependent sequences is obtained as a corollary. Examples on moving averages and descent processes are provided, and possible applications on non-parametric statistics are discussed.
Weak convergence of various general functionals of partial sums of dependent random variables to stochastic integral now play a major role in the modern statistics theory. In this paper, we obtain the weak convergence of various general functionals of partial sums of casual process by means of the method which was introduced in Jacod and Shiryaev (2003).
In this paper, we consider the sums of non-negative integer valued $m$-dependent random variables, and its approximation to the power series distribution. We first discuss some relevant results for power series distribution such as Stein operator, uniform and non-uniform bounds on the solution of Stein equation, and etc. Using Stein's method, we obtain the error bounds for the approximation problem considered. As special cases, we discuss two applications, namely, $2$-runs and $(k_1,k_2)$-runs and compare the bound with the existing bounds.
We provide a systematic approach to deal with the following problem. Let $X_1,\ldots,X_n$ be, possibly dependent, $[0,1]$-valued random variables. What is a sharp upper bound on the probability that their sum is significantly larger than their mean? In the case of independent random variables, a fundamental tool for bounding such probabilities is devised by Wassily Hoeffding. In this paper we consider analogues of Hoeffding's result for sums of dependent random variables for which we have certain information on their dependency structure. We prove a result that yields concentration inequalitie…
It is well-known that the central limit theorem holds for partial sums of a stationary sequence $(X_i)$ of $m$-dependent random variables with finite variance; however, the limit may be degenerate with variance 0 even if $\mathrm{Var}(X_i)\neq0$. We show that this happens only in the case when $X_i-\mathbb E X_i=Y_i-Y_{i-1}$ for an $(m-1)$-dependent stationary sequence $(Y_i)$ with finite variance (a result implicit in earlier results), and give a version for block factors. This yields a simple criterion that is a sufficient condition for the limit not to degenerate. Two applications to subtre…
Let $\bX=\{X_n\}_{n\geq 1}$ and $\bY=\{Y_n\}_{n\geq 1}$ be two independent random sequences. We obtain rates of convergence to the normal law of randomly weighted self-normalized sums $$ ψ_n(\bX,\bY)=\sum_{i=1}^nX_iY_i/V_n,\quad V_n=\sqrt{Y_1^2+...+Y_n^2}. $$ These rates are seen to hold for the convergence of a number of important statistics, such as for instance Student's $t$-statistic or the empirical correlation coefficient.
We obtain almost optimal convergence rate in the central limit theorem for "nonconevntional" sums of the form $S_N=N^{-\frac12}\sum_{n=1}^N (F(ξ_n,ξ_{2n},...,ξ_{\ell n})-\bar F)$.
We consider the problem of bounding large deviations for non-i.i.d. random variables that are allowed to have arbitrary dependencies. Previous works typically assumed a specific dependence structure, namely the existence of independent components. Bounds that depend on the degree of dependence between the observations have only been studied in the theory of mixing processes, where variables are time-ordered. Here, we introduce a new way of measuring dependences within an unordered set of variables. We prove concentration inequalities, that apply to any set of random variables, but benefit from…
We study functional convergence of sums of moving averages with random coefficients and heavy-tailed innovations. Under some standard moment conditions and the assumption that all partial sums of the series of coefficients are a.s. bounded between zero and the sum of the series we obtain functional convergence of the corresponding partial sum stochastic process in the space $D[0,1]$ of càdlàg functions with the Skorohod $M_{2}$ topology.
We prove moment inequalities for a class of functionals of i.i.d. random fields. We then derive rates in the central limit theorem for weighted sums of such randoms fields via an approximation by $m$-dependent random fields.
In this paper we show that the continuous version of the self normalised process $Y_{n,p}(t)= S_n(t)/V_{n,p}+(nt-[nt])X_{[nt]+1}/V_{n,p}$ where $S_n(t)=\sum_{i=1}^{[nt]} X_i$ and $V_{(n,p)}= \sum_{i=1}^{n}|X_i|^p)^{\frac{1}{p}}$ and $X_i$ i.i.d. random variables belong to $DA(α)$, has a non trivial distribution iff $p=α=2$. The case for $2 > p > α$ and $p \le α< 2$ is systematically eliminated by showing that either of tightness or finite dimensional convergence to a non-degenerate limiting distribution does not hold. This work is an extension of the work by Csörgö et al. who showed Donsker's …
We consider the generalized differential entropy of normalized sums of independent and identically distributed (IID) continuous random variables. We prove that the Rényi entropy and Tsallis entropy of order $α (α>0)$ of the normalized sum of IID continuous random variables with bounded moments are convergent to the corresponding Rényi entropy and Tsallis entropy of the Gaussian limit, and obtain sharp rates of convergence.
Let $\{X_1, X_2, ... \}$ be a sequence of dependent heavy-tailed random variables with distributions $F_1, F_2,...$ on $(-\infty,\infty)$, and let $τ$ be a nonnegative integer-valued random variable independent of the sequence $\{X_k, k \ge 1\}$. In this framework, we study the asymptotic behavior of the tail probabilities of the quantities $X_{(n)} = \max_{1\le k \le n} X_k$, $S_n =\sum_{k=1}^n X_k$ and $S_{(n)}=\max_{1\le k\le n} S_k$ for $n>1$, and for those of their randomized versions $X_{(τ)}$, $S_τ$ and $S_{(τ)}$. We also consider applications of the results obtained to some commonly-us…
We use Stein's method to obtain a bound on the distance between scaled $p$-dimensional random walks and a $p$-dimensional (correlated) Brownian Motion. We consider dependence schemes including those in which the summands in scaled sums are weakly dependent and their $p$ components are strongly correlated. As an example application, we prove a functional limit theorem for exceedances in an $m$-scans process, together with a bound on the rate of convergence. We also find a bound on the rate of convergence of scaled U-statistics to Brownian Motion, representing an example of a sum of strongly dep…
We study some SDEs derived from the $q\to 1$ limit of a 2D surface growth model called the $q$-Whittaker process. The fluctuations are proven to exhibit Gaussian characteristics that "come down from infinity": After rescaling and re-centering, convergence to the time-inverted stationary additive stochastic heat equation holds. The point of view in this paper is a probabilistic representation of the SDEs by independent sums. By this connection, the normal and Poisson approximations and the in-between slow decorrelation, all in particular integrated forms, explain the convergence of the re-cente…
Under correlation-type conditions, we derive upper bounds of order $\frac{1}{\sqrt{n}}$ for the Kolmogorov distance between the distributions of weighted sums of dependent summands and the normal law.
In this paper, we study the asymptotic behavior of sums of functions of the increments of a given semimartingale, taken along a regular grid whose mesh goes to 0. The function of the $i$th increment may depend on the current time, and also on the past of the semimartingale before this time. We study the convergence in probability of two types of such sums, and we also give associated central limit theorems. This extends known results when the summands are a function depending only on the increments, and this is motivated mainly by statistical applications.
We prove a version of a general transfer theorem for random sequences with independent random indexes in the double array limit setting under relaxed conditions. We also prove its partial inverse providing the necessary and sufficient conditions for the convergence of randomly indexed random sequences. Special attention is paid to the case where the elements of the basic double array are formed as cumulative sums of independent not necessarily identically distributed random variables. Using simple moment-type conditions we prove the theorem on convergence of the distributions of such sums to n…
We consider the distribution of the polygonal paths joining partial sums of classical Kloosterman sums, as their parameter varies modulo a prime tending to infinity. Using independence of Kloosterman sheaves, we prove convergence in the sense of finite distributions to a specific random Fourier series. We also consider Birch sums, for which we can establish convergence in law in the space of continuous functions. We then derive some applications.
We consider a simple regression model where a regressor is composed of order statistics and a noise is Markov-modulated. We introduce an empirical bridge of regression residuals and prove its weak convergence to a centered Gaussian process.
In this paper, we obtain precise rates of convergence in the strong invariance principle for stationary sequences of real-valued random variables satisfying weak dependence conditions including strong mixing in the sense of Rosenblatt (1956) as a special case. Applications to unbounded functions of intermittent maps are given.
The distribution of the sum of 1-dependent lattice vectors with supports on coordinate axes is approximated by a multivariate compound Poisson distribution and by signed compound Poisson measure. The local and $\ell_α$-norms are used to obtain the error bounds. The Heinrich method is used for the proofs.
The problem of convergence in law of normed sums of exchangeable random variables is examined. First, the problem is studied w.r.t. arrays of exchangeable random variables, and the special role played by mixtures of products of stable laws - as limits in law of normed sums in different rows of the array - is emphasized. Necessary and sufficient conditions for convergence to a specific form in the above class of measures are then given. Moreover, sufficient conditions for convergence of sums in a single row are proved. Finally, a potentially useful variant of the formulation of the results just…
In this paper, we obtain error bound for binomial and negative binomial approximations to weighted sums of locally dependent random variables, using Stein's method. We also discuss approximation results for weighted sums of independent random variables. We demonstrate our results through some applications in finance and runs in statistics.
We study convergence in law of partial sums of linear processes with heavy-tailed innovations. In the case of summable coefficients necessary and sufficient conditions for the finite dimensional convergence to an $α$-stable Lévy Motion are given. The conditions lead to new, tractable sufficient conditions in the case $α\leq 1$. In the functional setting we complement the existing results on $M_1$-convergence, obtained for linear processes with nonnegative coefficients by Avram and Taqqu (1992) and improved by Louhichi and Rio (2011), by proving that in the general setting partial sums of linea…
