Convergence of random sums and statistics constructed from samples with random sizes to the Linnik and Mittag-Leffler distributions and their generalizations
We present some product representations for random variables with the Linnik, Mittag-Leffler and Weibull distributions and establish the relationship between the mixing distributions in these representations. Based on these representations, we prove some limit theorems for a wide class of rather simple statistics constructed from samples with random sized including, e. g., random sums of independent random variables with finite variances, maximum random sums, extreme order statistics, in which the Linnik and Mittag-Leffler distributions play the role of limit laws. Thus we demonstrate that the scheme of geometric summation is far not the only asymptotic setting (even for sums of independent random variables) in which the Mittag-Leffler and Linnik laws appear as limit distributions. The two-sided Mittag-Leffler and one-sided Linnik distribution are introduced and also proved to be limit laws for some statistics constructed from samples with random sizes.
We present some product representations for random variables with the Linnik, Mittag-Leffler and Weibull distributions and establish the relationship between the mixing distributions in these representations. The main result is the representation of the Linnik distribution as a normal scale mixture with the Mittag-Leffler mixing distribution. As a corollary, we obtain the known representation of the Linnik distribution as a scale mixture of Laplace distributions. Another corollary of the main representation is the theorem establishing that the distributions of random sums of independent identi…
In this article, we introduce Mittag-Leffler Lévy process and provide two alternative representations of this process. First, in terms of Laplace transform of the marginal densities and next as a subordinated stochastic process. Both these representations are useful in analyzing the properties of the process. Since integer order moments for this process are not finite, we obtain fractional order moments. Its density function and corresponding Lévy measure density is also obtained. Further, heavy tailed behavior of densities and stochastic self-similarity of the process is demonstrated. Our res…
It is noticed that a certain transform of the Mittag-Leffler function Ea is completely monotone for a in [1,2]. Using the explicit expressions of its Bernstein density, an identity in law between suprema of completely asymmetric Levy a-stable processes. In the spectrally positive case, we retrieve the exact expression of a unilateral small deviation constant which had been previously obtained by a different method by Bernyk, Dalang and Peskir.
The Mittag-Leffler process $X=(X_t)_{t\ge 0}$ is introduced. This Markov process has the property that its marginal random variables $X_t$ are Mittag-Leffler distributed with parameter $e^{-t}$, $t\in [0,\infty)$, and the semigroup $(T_t)_{t\ge 0}$ of $X$ satisfies $T_tf(x)={\mathbb E}(f(x^{e^{-t}}X_t))$ for all $x\ge 0$ and all bounded measurable functions $f:[0,\infty)\to{\mathbb R}$. Further characteristics of the process $X$ are derived, for example an explicit formula for the joint moments of its finite dimensional distributions. The main result states that the block counting process of t…
The fractional Poisson process has recently attracted experts from several fields of study. Its natural generalization of the ordinary Poisson process made the model more appealing for real-world applications. In this paper, we generalized the standard and fractional Poisson processes through the waiting time distribution, and showed their relations to an integral operator with a generalized Mittag--Leffler function in the kernel. The waiting times of the proposed renewal processes have the generalized Mittag--Leffler and stretched-squashed Mittag--Leffler distributions. Note that the generali…
We study three non-equivalent queueing models in continuous time that each generalise the classical M/M/1 queue in a different way. Inter-event times in all models are Mittag-Leffler distributed, which is a heavy tail distribution with no moments. For each of the models we answer the question of the queue being at zero infinitely often (the `recurrence' or `stable' regime) or not (the transient regime). Aside from this question, the different analytical properties of each models allow us to answer a number of questions such as existence and description of equilibrium distributions, mixing time…
Pollard used contour integration to show that the Mittag-Leffler function is the Laplace transform of a positive function, thereby proving that it is completely monotone. He also cited personal communication by Feller of a discovery of the result by "methods of probability theory". In his published work, Feller used the two-dimensional Laplace transform of a bivariate distribution to derive the Pollard result. But both approaches may be described as analytic, despite the occurrence of the stable distribution in Feller's starting point and in the Pollard result itself. We adopt a Bayesian proba…
We review the function theoretical properties of the Mittag-Leffler function $E_{a,b}\left( z\right) $ in a self-contained manner, but also add new results; more than half is new!
We consider two operations on the Mittag-Leffler function which cancel the exponential term in the expansion at infinity, and generate a completely monotonic function. The first one is the action of a certain differential-difference operator, and leads to a characterization via some necktie domain. The second one is the subtraction of the exponential term itself multiplied by an incomplete Gamma function. These results extend previous works by various authors.
After sketching the basic principles of renewal theory we discuss the classical Poisson process and offer two other processes, namely the renewal process of Mittag-Leffler type and the renewal process of Wright type, so named by us because special functions of Mittag-Leffler and of Wright type appear in the definition of the relevant waiting times. We compare these three processes with each other, furthermore consider corresponding renewal processes with reward and numerically their long-time behaviour.
We construct admissible circulant Laplacian matrix functions as generators for strictly increasing random walks on the integer line. These Laplacian matrix functions refer to a certain class of Bernstein functions. The approach has connections with biased walks on digraphs. Within this framework, we introduce a space-time generalization of the Poisson process as a strictly increasing walk with discrete Mittag-Leffler jumps subordinated to a (continuous-time) fractional Poisson process. We call this process `{\it space-time Mittag-Leffler process}'. We derive explicit formulae for the state pro…
We discuss some applications of the Mittag-Leffler function and related probability distributions in the theory of renewal processes and continuous time random walks. In particular we show the asymptotic (long time) equivalence of a generic power law waiting time to the Mittag-Leffler waiting time distribution via rescaling and respeeding the clock of time. By a second respeeding (by rescaling the spatial variable) we obtain the diffusion limit of the continuous time random walk under power law regimes in time and in space. Finally, we exhibit the time-fractional drift process as a diffusion l…
We extend the construction principle of multivariate phase-type distributions to establish an analytically tractable class of heavy-tailed multivariate random variables whose marginal distributions are of Mittag-Leffler type with arbitrary index of regular variation. The construction can essentially be seen as allowing a scalar parameter to become matrix-valued. The class of distributions is shown to be dense among all multivariate positive random variables and hence provides a versatile candidate for the modelling of heavy-tailed, but tail-independent, risks in various fields of application.
In this paper we define the class of matrix Mittag-Leffler distributions and study some of its properties. We show that it can be interpreted as a particular case of an inhomogeneous phase-type distribution with random scaling factor, and alternatively also as the absorption time of a semi-Markov process with Mittag-Leffler distributed interarrival times. We then identify this class and its power transforms as a remarkably parsimonious and versatile family for the modelling of heavy-tailed risks, which overcomes some disadvantages of other approaches like the problem of threshold selection in …
By observing that the fractional Caputo derivative can be expressed in terms of a multiplicative convolution operator, we introduce and study a class of such operators which also have the same self-similarity property as the Caputo derivative. We proceed by identifying a subclass which is in bijection with the set of Bernstein functions and we provide several representations of their eigenfunctions, expressed in terms of the corresponding Bernstein function, that generalize the Mittag-Leffler function. Each eigenfunction turns out to be the Laplace transform of the right-inverse of a non-decre…
The main contribution of this paper is the use of probability theory to prove that the three-parameter Mittag-Leffler function is the Laplace transform of a distribution and thus completely monotone. Pollard used contour integration to prove the result in the one-parameter case. He also cited personal communication by Feller of a discovery of the result by ''methods of probability theory''. Feller used the two-dimensional Laplace transform of a bivariate distribution to derive the result. We pursue the theme of probability theory to explore complete monotonicity beyond the contribution due to …
The main purpose of this note is to point out the relevance of the Mittag-Leffler probability distribution in the so-called thinning theory for a renewal process with a queue of power law type. This theory, formerly considered by Gnedenko and Kovalenko in 1968 without the explicit reference to the Mittag-Leffler function, was used by the authors in the theory of continuous random walk and consequently of fractional diffusion in a plenary lecture by the late Prof Gorenflo at a Seminar on Anomalous Transport held in Bad-Honnef in July 2006, published in a 2008 book. After recalling the basic the…
In this paper we consider space-time fractional telegraph equations, where the time derivatives are intended in the sense of Hilfer and Hadamard while the space fractional derivatives are meant in the sense of Riesz-Feller. We provide the Fourier transforms of the solutions of some Cauchy problems for these fractional equations. Probabilistic interpretations of some specific cases are also provided.
The aim of this paper is to investigate the asymptotic behavior of the so-called elephant random walk with stops (ERWS). In contrast with the standard elephant random walk, the elephant is allowed to be lazy by staying on his own position. We prove that the number of ones of the ERWS, properly normalized, converges almost surely to a Mittag-Leffler distribution. It allows us to carry out a sharp analysis on the asymptotic behavior of the ERWS. In the diffusive and critical regimes, we establish the almost sure convergence of the ERWS. We also show that it is necessary to self-normalized the po…
