We transform the metric of an isolated matter source in the multipolar post-Minkowskian approximation from harmonic (de Donder) coordinates to radiative Newman-Unti (NU) coordinates. To linearized order, we obtain the NU metric as a functional of the mass and current multipole moments of the source, valid all-over the exterior region of the source. Imposing appropriate boundary conditions we recover the generalized Bondi-van der Burg-Metzner-Sachs residual symmetry group. To quadratic order, in the case of the mass-quadrupole interaction, we determine the contributions of gravitational-wave tails in the NU metric, and prove that the expansion of the metric in terms of the radius is regular to all orders. The mass and angular momentum aspects, as well as the Bondi shear, are read off from the metric. They are given by the radiative quadrupole moment including the tail terms.
The most general vacuum solution to Einstein's field equations with no incoming radiation can be constructed perturbatively from two infinite sets of canonical multipole moments, which are found to be mapped into each other under gravitational electric-magnetic duality at the non-linear level. We demonstrate that in non-radiative regions such spacetimes are completely characterized by a set of conserved celestial charges that consist of the Geroch-Hansen multipole moments, the generalized BMS charges and additional celestial multipoles accounting for subleading memory effects. Transitions amon…
We consider vacuum metrics admitting conformal compactification which is smooth up to the scri $\mathscr{I^+}$. We write metric in the Bondi-Sachs form and expand it into power series in the inverse affine distance $1/r$. Like in the case of the luminosity distance, given the news tensor and initial data for a part of metric the Einstein equations define coefficients of the series in a recursive way. This is also true in the stationary case however now the news tensor vanishes and the role of initial data is taken by multipole moments which are equivalent to moments of Thorne. We find an appro…
We provide a prescription to compute the gravitational multipole moments of compact objects for asymptotically de Sitter spacetimes. Our prescription builds upon a recent definition of the gravitational multipole moments in terms of Noether charges associated to specific vector fields, within the residual harmonic gauge, dubbed multipole symmetries. We first derive the multipole symmetries for spacetimes which are asymptotically de Sitter; we also show that these symmetry vector fields eliminate the non-propagating degrees of freedom from the linearized gravitational wave equation in a suitabl…
We define the mass and current multipole moments for an arbitrary theory of gravity in terms of canonical Noether charges associated with specific residual transformations in canonical harmonic gauge, which we call multipole symmetries. We show that our definition exactly matches Thorne's mass and current multipole moments in Einstein gravity, which are defined in terms of metric components. For radiative configurations, the total multipole charges -- including the contributions from the source and the radiation -- are given by surface charges at spatial infinity, while the source multipole mo…
The estimation of radiative modes is a central problem in gravitational wave theory, with essential applications in signal modeling and data analysis. This problem is complicated by most astrophysically relevant systems' not having modes that are analytically tractable. A ubiquitous workaround is to use not modes, but multipole moments defined by spin weighted spherical harmonics. However, spherical multipole moments are only related to the modes of systems without angular momentum. As a result, they can obscure the underlying physics of astrophysically relevant systems, such as binary black h…
The definition of Komar for the mass of a relativistic source is used as a starting point to introduce volume integrals for Relativistic Multipole Moments (RMM). A certain generalization of the classical Gauss theorem is used to rewrite these multipole moments as integrals over a surface at the infinity. Therefore it is shown that the above generalization leads to Asymptotic Relativistic Multipole Moments (ARMM), recovering the multipoles of Geroch or Thorne, when the integrals are evaluated in asympotically cartesian harmonic coordinates. Relationships regarding the Thorne definition and the …
Above Planck energies, the spacetime might become non--Riemannian, as it is known fron string theory and inflation. Then geometries arise in which nonmetricity and torsion appear as field strengths, side by side with curvature. By gauging the affine group, a metric affine gauge theory emerges as dynamical framework. Here, by using the harmonic map ansatz, a new class of multipole like solutions in the metric affine gravity theory (MAG) is obtained.
In this work we give a complete picture of how to in a direct simple way define the mass at null infinity in harmonic coordinates in three different ways that we show satisfy the Bondi mass loss law. The first and second way involve only the limit of metric (Trautman mass) respectively the null second fundamental forms along asymptotically characteristic surfaces (asymptotic Hawking mass) that only depend on the ADM mass. The last in an original way involves construction of special characteristic coordinates at null infinity (Bondi mass). The results here rely on asymptotics of the metric deri…
The mass loss of an isolated gravitating system due to energy carried away by gravitational waves with a cosmological constant $Λ\in\R$ was recently worked out, using the Newman-Penrose-Unti approach. In that same article, an expression for the Bondi mass of the isolated system, $M_Λ$, for the $Λ>0$ case was proposed. The stipulated mass $M_Λ$ would ensure that in the absence of any incoming gravitational radiation from elsewhere, the emitted gravitational waves must carry away a positive-definite energy. That suggested quantity however, introduced a $Λ$-correction term to the Bondi mass $M_B$…
The linearized field equations of general relativity in harmonic coordinates are given by an inhomogeneous wave equation. In the region exterior to the matter field, the retarded solution of this wave equation can be expanded in terms of 10 Cartesian symmetric and tracefree (STF) multipoles in post-Minkowskian approximation. For such a multipole decomposition only three and rather weak assumptions are required: 1. No-incoming radiation condition. 2. The matter source is spatially compact. 3. A spherical expansion for the metric outside the matter source is possible. During the last decades, th…
The estimation of a physical system's normal modes is a fundamental problem in physics. The quasi-normal modes of perturbed Kerr black holes, with their related spheroidal harmonics, are key examples, and have diverse applications in gravitational wave theory and data analysis. Recently, it has been shown that \textit{adjoint}-spheroidal harmonics and the related spheroidal multipole moments may be used to estimate the radiative modes of arbitrary sources. In this paper, we investigate whether spheroidal multipole moments, relative to their spherical harmonic counterparts, better approximate t…
We present expressions for the energy, linear momentum and angular momentum carried away from an isolated system by gravitational radiation based on spin-weighted spherical harmonics decomposition of the Weyl scalar $Ψ_4$. We also show that the expressions derived are equivalent to the common expressions obtained when using a framework based on perturbations of a Schwazschild background. The main idea is to collect together all the different expressions in a uniform and consistent way. The formulae presented here are directly applicable to the calculation of the radiated energy, linear momentu…
As gravitational-wave (GW) observations of binary black holes are becoming a precision tool for physics and astronomy, several subdominant effects in the GW signals need to be accurately modeled. Previous studies have shown that neglecting subdominant modes in the GW templates causes an unacceptable loss in detection efficiency and large systematic errors in the estimated parameters for binaries with large mass ratios. Our recent work [Mehta et al., Phys. Rev. D 96, 124010 (2017)] constructed a phenomenological gravitational waveform family for nonspinning black-hole binaries that includes sub…
The Multipolar Post-Minkowskian (MPM) formalism represents an approach for determining the metric density in the exterior of a compact source of matter. In the MPM formalism the metric density is given in harmonic coordinates and in terms of symmetric tracefree (STF) multipoles. In this investigation, the post-linear metric density of this formalism is used in order to determine the post-linear metric tensor in the exterior of a compact source of matter. The metric tensor is given in harmonic coordinates and in terms of STF multipoles. The post-linear metric coefficients are associated with an…
The gravitational waveform (GWF) generated by inspiralling compact binaries moving in quasi-circular orbits is computed at the third post-Newtonian (3PN) approximation to general relativity. Our motivation is two-fold: (i) To provide accurate templates for the data analysis of gravitational wave inspiral signals in laser interferometric detectors; (ii) To provide the associated spin-weighted spherical harmonic decomposition to facilitate comparison and match of the high post-Newtonian prediction for the inspiral waveform to the numerically-generated waveforms for the merger and ringdown. This …
The exterior solution for an arbitrary charged, massive source, is studied as a static deviation from the Reissner-Nordstrøm metric. This is reduced to two coupled ordinary differential equations for the gravitational and electrostatic potential functions. The homogeneous equations are explicitly solved in the particular case $q^2=m^2$, obtaining a multipole expansion with radial hypergeometric dependence for both potentials. In the limiting case of a neutral source, the equations are shown to coincide with recent results by Bondi and Rindler.

To compare two space-times on large domains, and in particular the global structure of their manifolds, requires using identical frames of reference and associated coordinate conditions. In this paper we use and compare two classes of time-like congruences and corresponding adapted coordinates: the harmonic and quo-harmonic classes. Besides the intrinsic definition and some of their intrinsic properties and differences we consider with some detail their differences at the level of the linearized approximation of the field equations. The hard part of this paper is an explicit and general determ…
The coherent WaveBurst (cWB) pipeline implements a minimally-modelled search to find a coherent response in the network of gravitational wave detectors of the LIGO-Virgo Collaboration in the time-frequency domain. In this manuscript, we provide a timely introduction to an extension of the cWB analysis to detect spectral features beyond the main quadrupolar emission of gravitational waves during the inspiral phase of compact binary coalescences; more detailed discussion will be provided in a forthcoming paper [1]. The search is performed by defining specific regions in the time-frequency map to…
Considering perturbations off the Reissner-Nordstrom metric while keeping the perturbations in the class of type II Einstein-Maxwell metrics, we do a spherical harmonic expansion of all the variables up to the quadrupole term. This leads to a rather surprising results. Referring to the source of the metric as a type II particle (analogous to referring to a Schwarzschild-Reissner-Nordstrom or Kerr-Newman particle), we see immediately that the Bondi momentum of the particle take the classical form of mass times velocity plus an electromagnetic radiation reaction term while the Bondi mass loss eq…

We study the sensitivity of a pair of Einstein Telescopes (ET) (hypothetically located at the two sites currently under consideration for ET) to the anisotropies of the Stochastic Gravitational Wave Background (SGWB). We focus on the $\ell =0,2,4$ multipoles of an expansion of the SGWB in spherical harmonics, since the sensitivity to other multipoles is suppressed due to the fact that this pair of detector operates in a regime for which the product between the observed frequency and the distance between the two sites is much smaller than one. In this regime, the interferometer overlap function…
We study gravitational lensing by a generic extended mass distribution. For that, we consider the diffraction of electromagnetic (EM) waves by an extended, weakly aspherical, gravitating object. We account for the static gravitational field of such a lens by representing its exterior potential in the most generic form, expressed via an infinite set of symmetric trace free (STF) tensor multipole mass moments. This yields the most general form of the gravitational phase shift, which allows for a comprehensive description of the optical properties of a generic gravitational lens. We found that at…
We study in detail the dynamics and stability of marginally trapped surfaces during a binary black hole merger. This is the second in a two-part study. The first part studied the basic geometric aspects of the world tubes traced out by the marginal surfaces and the status of the area increase law. Here we continue and study the dynamics of the horizons during the merger, again for the head-on collision of two non-spinning black holes. In particular we follow the spectrum of the stability operator during the course of the merger for all the horizons present in the problem and implement systemat…
The paper deals with a special kind of problems that appear in solutions of Einstein's field equations for extended bodies: many structure-dependent terms appear in intermediate calculations that cancel exactly in virtue of the local equations of motion or can be eliminated by appropriate gauge transformations. For a single body at rest these problems are well understood for both the post-Newtonian and the post-Minkowskian cases. However, the situation is still unclear for approximations of higher orders. This paper discusses this problem for a "body" of spherical symmetry to post-linear order…
