We introduce ACRONYM, a dataset for robot grasp planning based on physics simulation. The dataset contains 17.7M parallel-jaw grasps, spanning 8872 objects from 262 different categories, each labeled with the grasp result obtained from a physics simulator. We show the value of this large and diverse dataset by using it to train two state-of-the-art learning-based grasp planning algorithms. Grasp performance improves significantly when compared to the original smaller dataset. Data and tools can be accessed at https://sites.google.com/nvidia.com/graspdataset.
Object grasping is critical for many applications, which is also a challenging computer vision problem. However, for the clustered scene, current researches suffer from the problems of insufficient training data and the lacking of evaluation benchmarks. In this work, we contribute a large-scale grasp pose detection dataset with a unified evaluation system. Our dataset contains 87,040 RGBD images with over 370 million grasp poses. Meanwhile, our evaluation system directly reports whether a grasping is successful or not by analytic computation, which is able to evaluate any kind of grasp poses w…

Robotic dexterous grasping is the first step to enable human-like dexterous object manipulation and thus a crucial robotic technology. However, dexterous grasping is much more under-explored than object grasping with parallel grippers, partially due to the lack of a large-scale dataset. In this work, we present a large-scale robotic dexterous grasp dataset, DexGraspNet, generated by our proposed highly efficient synthesis method that can be generally applied to any dexterous hand. Our method leverages a deeply accelerated differentiable force closure estimator and thus can efficiently and robu…
Despite the impressive progress achieved in robotic grasping, robots are not skilled in sophisticated tasks (e.g. search and grasp a specified target in clutter). Such tasks involve not only grasping but the comprehensive perception of the world (e.g. the object relationships). Recently, encouraging results demonstrate that it is possible to understand high-level concepts by learning. However, such algorithms are usually data-intensive, and the lack of data severely limits their performance. In this paper, we present a new dataset named REGRAD for the learning of relationships among objects an…

In this paper, we introduce DA$^2$, the first large-scale dual-arm dexterity-aware dataset for the generation of optimal bimanual grasping pairs for arbitrary large objects. The dataset contains about 9M pairs of parallel-jaw grasps, generated from more than 6000 objects and each labeled with various grasp dexterity measures. In addition, we propose an end-to-end dual-arm grasp evaluation model trained on the rendered scenes from this dataset. We utilize the evaluation model as our baseline to show the value of this novel and nontrivial dataset by both online analysis and real robot experiment…
Grasping in cluttered scenes is challenging for robot vision systems, as detection accuracy can be hindered by partial occlusion of objects. We adopt a reinforcement learning (RL) framework and 3D vision architectures to search for feasible viewpoints for grasping by the use of hand-mounted RGB-D cameras. To overcome the disadvantages of photo-realistic environment simulation, we propose a large-scale dataset called Real Embodied Dataset (RED), which includes full-viewpoint real samples on the upper hemisphere with amodal annotation and enables a simulator that has real visual feedback. Based …

There has been increasing interest in smart factories powered by robotics systems to tackle repetitive, laborious tasks. One impactful yet challenging task in robotics-powered smart factory applications is robotic grasping: using robotic arms to grasp objects autonomously in different settings. Robotic grasping requires a variety of computer vision tasks such as object detection, segmentation, grasp prediction, pick planning, etc. While significant progress has been made in leveraging of machine learning for robotic grasping, particularly with deep learning, a big challenge remains in the need…

Despite the enormous progress and generalization in robotic grasping in recent years, existing methods have yet to scale and generalize task-oriented grasping to the same extent. This is largely due to the scale of the datasets both in terms of the number of objects and tasks studied. We address these concerns with the TaskGrasp dataset which is more diverse both in terms of objects and tasks, and an order of magnitude larger than previous datasets. The dataset contains 250K task-oriented grasps for 56 tasks and 191 objects along with their RGB-D information. We take advantage of this new brea…
We consider the task of grasping a target object based on a natural language command query. Previous work primarily focused on localizing the object given the query, which requires a separate grasp detection module to grasp it. The cascaded application of two pipelines incurs errors in overlapping multi-object cases due to ambiguity in the individual outputs. This work proposes a model named Command Grasping Network(CGNet) to directly output command satisficing grasps from RGB image and textual command inputs. A dataset with ground truth (image, command, grasps) tuple is generated based on the…

Transparent objects are common in our daily life and frequently handled in the automated production line. Robust vision-based robotic grasping and manipulation for these objects would be beneficial for automation. However, the majority of current grasping algorithms would fail in this case since they heavily rely on the depth image, while ordinary depth sensors usually fail to produce accurate depth information for transparent objects owing to the reflection and refraction of light. In this work, we address this issue by contributing a large-scale real-world dataset for transparent object dept…

In this paper, we present a modular robotic system to tackle the problem of generating and performing antipodal robotic grasps for unknown objects from n-channel image of the scene. We propose a novel Generative Residual Convolutional Neural Network (GR-ConvNet) model that can generate robust antipodal grasps from n-channel input at real-time speeds (~20ms). We evaluate the proposed model architecture on standard datasets and a diverse set of household objects. We achieved state-of-the-art accuracy of 97.7% and 94.6% on Cornell and Jacquard grasping datasets respectively. We also demonstrate a…

After a grasp has been planned, if the object orientation changes, the initial grasp may not have to be modified to accommodate the orientation change. For example, rotation of a cylinder by any amount around its centerline does not change its geometric shape relative to the grasper. Objects that can be approximated to solids of revolution or contain other geometric symmetries are prevalent in everyday life, and this information can be employed to improve the efficiency of existing grasp planning models. This paper experimentally investigates change in human-planned grasps under varied object …
Modern approaches to grasp planning often involve deep learning. However, there are only a few large datasets of labelled grasping examples on physical robots, and available datasets involve relatively simple planar grasps with two-fingered grippers. Here we present: 1) a new human grasp demonstration method that facilitates rapid collection of naturalistic grasp examples, with full six-degree-of-freedom gripper positioning; and 2) a dataset of roughly forty thousand successful grasps on 109 different rigid objects with the RightHand Robotics three-fingered ReFlex gripper.

We present the Evolved Grasping Analysis Dataset (EGAD), comprising over 2000 generated objects aimed at training and evaluating robotic visual grasp detection algorithms. The objects in EGAD are geometrically diverse, filling a space ranging from simple to complex shapes and from easy to difficult to grasp, compared to other datasets for robotic grasping, which may be limited in size or contain only a small number of object classes. Additionally, we specify a set of 49 diverse 3D-printable evaluation objects to encourage reproducible testing of robotic grasping systems across a range of compl…

Robotic grasping for a diverse set of objects is essential in many robot manipulation tasks. One promising approach is to learn deep grasping models from large training datasets of object images and grasp labels. However, empirical grasping datasets are typically sparsely labeled (i.e., a small number of successful grasp labels in each image). The data sparsity issue can lead to insufficient supervision and false-negative labels and thus results in poor learning results. This paper proposes a Maximum Likelihood Grasp Sampling Loss (MLGSL) to tackle the data sparsity issue. The proposed method …

To reduce data collection time for deep learning of robust robotic grasp plans, we explore training from a synthetic dataset of 6.7 million point clouds, grasps, and analytic grasp metrics generated from thousands of 3D models from Dex-Net 1.0 in randomized poses on a table. We use the resulting dataset, Dex-Net 2.0, to train a Grasp Quality Convolutional Neural Network (GQ-CNN) model that rapidly predicts the probability of success of grasps from depth images, where grasps are specified as the planar position, angle, and depth of a gripper relative to an RGB-D sensor. Experiments with over 1,…
Grasp detection with consideration of the affiliations between grasps and their owner in object overlapping scenes is a necessary and challenging task for the practical use of the robotic grasping approach. In this paper, a robotic grasp detection algorithm named ROI-GD is proposed to provide a feasible solution to this problem based on Region of Interest (ROI), which is the region proposal for objects. ROI-GD uses features from ROIs to detect grasps instead of the whole scene. It has two stages: the first stage is to provide ROIs in the input image and the second-stage is the grasp detector b…

Training computers to understand, model, and synthesize human grasping requires a rich dataset containing complex 3D object shapes, detailed contact information, hand pose and shape, and the 3D body motion over time. While "grasping" is commonly thought of as a single hand stably lifting an object, we capture the motion of the entire body and adopt the generalized notion of "whole-body grasps". Thus, we collect a new dataset, called GRAB (GRasping Actions with Bodies), of whole-body grasps, containing full 3D shape and pose sequences of 10 subjects interacting with 51 everyday objects of varyi…

Grasping skill is a major ability that a wide number of real-life applications require for robotisation. State-of-the-art robotic grasping methods perform prediction of object grasp locations based on deep neural networks. However, such networks require huge amount of labeled data for training making this approach often impracticable in robotics. In this paper, we propose a method to generate a large scale synthetic dataset with ground truth, which we refer to as the Jacquard grasping dataset. Jacquard is built on a subset of ShapeNet, a large CAD models dataset, and contains both RGB-D images…

Grasping is natural for humans. However, it involves complex hand configurations and soft tissue deformation that can result in complicated regions of contact between the hand and the object. Understanding and modeling this contact can potentially improve hand models, AR/VR experiences, and robotic grasping. Yet, we currently lack datasets of hand-object contact paired with other data modalities, which is crucial for developing and evaluating contact modeling techniques. We introduce ContactPose, the first dataset of hand-object contact paired with hand pose, object pose, and RGB-D images. Con…

Object grasping in cluttered scenes is a widely investigated field of robot manipulation. Most of the current works focus on estimating grasp pose from point clouds based on an efficient single-shot grasp detection network. However, due to the lack of geometry awareness of the local grasping area, it may cause severe collisions and unstable grasp configurations. In this paper, we propose a two-stage grasp pose refinement network which detects grasps globally while fine-tuning low-quality grasps and filtering noisy grasps locally. Furthermore, we extend the 6-DoF grasp with an extra dimension a…
Current learning-based robot grasping approaches exploit human-labeled datasets for training the models. However, there are two problems with such a methodology: (a) since each object can be grasped in multiple ways, manually labeling grasp locations is not a trivial task; (b) human labeling is biased by semantics. While there have been attempts to train robots using trial-and-error experiments, the amount of data used in such experiments remains substantially low and hence makes the learner prone to over-fitting. In this paper, we take the leap of increasing the available training data to 40 …

Gathering real-world data from the robot quickly becomes a bottleneck when constructing a robot learning system for grasping. In this work, we design a semi-supervised grasping system that, on top of a small sample of robot experience, takes advantage of images of products to be picked, which are collected without any interactions with the robot. We validate our findings both in the simulation and in the real world. In the regime of a small number of robot training samples, taking advantage of the unlabeled data allows us to achieve performance at the level of 10-fold bigger dataset size used …
The vision-based grasp detection method is an important research direction in the field of robotics. However, due to the rectangle metric of the grasp detection rectangle's limitation, a false-positive grasp occurs, resulting in the failure of the real-world robot grasp task. In this paper, we propose a novel generative convolutional neural network model to improve the accuracy and robustness of robot grasp detection in real-world scenes. First, a Gaussian-based guided training method is used to encode the quality of the grasp point and grasp angle in the grasp pose, highlighting the highest-q…
Deep learning is an established framework for learning hierarchical data representations. While compute power is in abundance, one of the main challenges in applying this framework to robotic grasping has been obtaining the amount of data needed to learn these representations, and structuring the data to the task at hand. Data-driven approaches have become a dominant paradigm for robotic grasp planning. However, the performance of these approaches is enormously influenced by the quality of the available training data. In this paper, we propose a framework to generate object shapes to improve the grasping dataset quality, thus enhancing the grasping ability of a pre-designed learning-based grasp planning network. In this framework, the object shapes are embedded into a low-dimensional feature space using an AutoEncoder (encoder-decoder) based structure network.
