Despite the enormous progress and generalization in robotic grasping in recent years, existing methods have yet to scale and generalize task-oriented grasping to the same extent. This is largely due to the scale of the datasets both in terms of the number of objects and tasks studied. We address these concerns with the TaskGrasp dataset which is more diverse both in terms of objects and tasks, and an order of magnitude larger than previous datasets. The dataset contains 250K task-oriented grasps for 56 tasks and 191 objects along with their RGB-D information. We take advantage of this new breadth and diversity in the data and present the GCNGrasp framework which uses the semantic knowledge of objects and tasks encoded in a knowledge graph to generalize to new object instances, classes and even new tasks. Our framework shows a significant improvement of around 12% on held-out settings compared to baseline methods which do not use semantics. We demonstrate that our dataset and model are applicable for the real world by executing task-oriented grasps on a real robot on unknown objects. 6D robotic grasping beyond top-down bin-picking scenarios is a challenging task. Previous solutions based on 6D grasp synthesis with robot motion planning usually operate in an open-loop setting, which are sensitive to grasp synthesis errors. In this work, we propose a new method for learning closed-loop control policies for 6D grasping. Our policy takes a segmented point cloud of an object from an egocentric camera as input, and outputs continuous 6D control actions of the robot gripper for grasping the object. We combine imitation learning and reinforcement learning and introduce a goal-auxi…

Transparent objects are common in day-to-day life and hence find many applications that require robot grasping. Many solutions toward object grasping exist for non-transparent objects. However, due to the unique visual properties of transparent objects, standard 3D sensors produce noisy or distorted measurements. Modern approaches tackle this problem by either refining the noisy depth measurements or using some intermediate representation of the depth. Towards this, we study deep learning 6D pose estimation from RGB images only for transparent object grasping. To train and test the suitability…
A segmentation-based architecture is proposed to decompose objects into multiple primitive shapes from monocular depth input for robotic manipulation. The backbone deep network is trained on synthetic data with 6 classes of primitive shapes generated by a simulation engine. Each primitive shape is designed with parametrized grasp families, permitting the pipeline to identify multiple grasp candidates per shape primitive region. The grasps are priority ordered via proposed ranking algorithm, with the first feasible one chosen for execution. On task-free grasping of individual objects, the metho…

This paper considers the final approach phase of visual-closed-loop grasping where the RGB-D camera is no longer able to provide valid depth information. Many current robotic grasping controllers are not closed-loop and therefore fail for moving objects. Closed-loop grasp controllers based on RGB-D imagery can track a moving object, but fail when the sensor's minimum object distance is violated just before grasping. To overcome this we propose the use of image-based visual servoing (IBVS) to guide the robot to the object-relative grasp pose using camera RGB information. IBVS robustly moves the…

In this paper, we investigate the problem of grasping novel objects in unstructured environments. To address this problem, consideration of the object geometry, reachability and force closure analysis are required. We propose a framework for grasping unknown objects by localizing contact regions on the contours formed by a set of depth edges in a single view 2D depth image. According to the edge geometric features obtained from analyzing the data of the depth map, the contact regions are determined. Finally,We validate the performance of the approach by applying it to the scenes with both sing…
Despite the impressive progress achieved in robotic grasping, robots are not skilled in sophisticated tasks (e.g. search and grasp a specified target in clutter). Such tasks involve not only grasping but the comprehensive perception of the world (e.g. the object relationships). Recently, encouraging results demonstrate that it is possible to understand high-level concepts by learning. However, such algorithms are usually data-intensive, and the lack of data severely limits their performance. In this paper, we present a new dataset named REGRAD for the learning of relationships among objects an…
The ability to adapt to uncertainties, recover from failures, and coordinate between hand and fingers are essential sensorimotor skills for fully autonomous robotic grasping. In this paper, we aim to study a unified feedback control policy for generating the finger actions and the motion of hand to accomplish seamlessly coordinated tasks of reaching, grasping and re-grasping. We proposed a set of quantified metrics for task-orientated rewards to guide the policy exploration, and we analyzed and demonstrated the effectiveness of each reward term. To acquire a robust re-grasping motion, we deplo…
This paper presents a comprehensive survey on vision-based robotic grasping. We conclude three key tasks during vision-based robotic grasping, which are object localization, object pose estimation and grasp estimation. In detail, the object localization task contains object localization without classification, object detection and object instance segmentation. This task provides the regions of the target object in the input data. The object pose estimation task mainly refers to estimating the 6D object pose and includes correspondence-based methods, template-based methods and voting-based meth…

6-DoF robotic grasping is a long-lasting but unsolved problem. Recent methods utilize strong 3D networks to extract geometric grasping representations from depth sensors, demonstrating superior accuracy on common objects but perform unsatisfactorily on photometrically challenging objects, e.g., objects in transparent or reflective materials. The bottleneck lies in that the surface of these objects can not reflect back accurate depth due to the absorption or refraction of light. In this paper, in contrast to exploiting the inaccurate depth data, we propose the first RGB-only 6-DoF grasping pipe…
Generalising robotic grasping to previously unseen objects is a key task in general robotic manipulation. The current method for training many antipodal generative grasping models rely on a binary ground truth grasp map generated from the centre thirds of correctly labelled grasp rectangles. However, these binary maps do not accurately reflect the positions in which a robotic arm can correctly grasp a given object. We propose a continuous Gaussian representation of annotated grasps to generate ground truth training data which achieves a higher success rate on a simulated robotic grasping bench…

Intelligent robot grasping is a very challenging task due to its inherent complexity and non availability of sufficient labelled data. Since making suitable labelled data available for effective training for any deep learning based model including deep reinforcement learning is so crucial for successful grasp learning, in this paper we propose to solve the problem of generating grasping Poses/Rectangles using a Pix2Pix Generative Adversarial Network (Pix2Pix GAN), which takes an image of an object as input and produces the grasping rectangle tagged with the object as output. Here, we have prop…

6D grasping in cluttered scenes is a longstanding problem in robotic manipulation. Open-loop manipulation pipelines may fail due to inaccurate state estimation, while most end-to-end grasping methods have not yet scaled to complex scenes with obstacles. In this work, we propose a new method for end-to-end learning of 6D grasping in cluttered scenes. Our hierarchical framework learns collision-free target-driven grasping based on partial point cloud observations. We learn an embedding space to encode expert grasping plans during training and a variational autoencoder to sample diverse grasping …

In this paper, we present a transformer-based architecture, namely TF-Grasp, for robotic grasp detection. The developed TF-Grasp framework has two elaborate designs making it well suitable for visual grasping tasks. The first key design is that we adopt the local window attention to capture local contextual information and detailed features of graspable objects. Then, we apply the cross window attention to model the long-term dependencies between distant pixels. Object knowledge, environmental configuration, and relationships between different visual entities are aggregated for subsequent gras…
Deep learning has enabled remarkable improvements in grasp synthesis for previously unseen objects from partial object views. However, existing approaches lack the ability to explicitly reason about the full 3D geometry of the object when selecting a grasp, relying on indirect geometric reasoning derived when learning grasp success networks. This abandons explicit geometric reasoning, such as avoiding undesired robot object collisions. We propose to utilize a novel, learned 3D reconstruction to enable geometric awareness in a grasping system. We leverage the structure of the reconstruction net…

We consider the optimization of the vector of grasping forces that support a known generalized force acting on the grasped object---a rigid body or a mechanism. Working in the framework of finite-dimensional normed vector spaces and their dual spaces, the cost function to be minimized is assumed to be a norm on the space of grasping forces. We present an expression for the optimum which depends on the external force and the kinematics of the grasping system. Next, assuming that optimal grasping forces are applied using force control, and assuming that there is a bound on the norm of the admiss…

This approach tackles the complexity of such pipelines by proposing different metrics that account for the features and limits of the test platf…
While grasps must satisfy the grasping stability criteria, good grasps depend on the specific manipulation scenario: the object, its properties and functionalities, as well as the task and grasp constraints. In this paper, we consider such information for robot grasping by leveraging manifolds and symbolic object parts. Specifically, we introduce a new probabilistic logic module to first semantically reason about pre-grasp configurations with respect to the intended tasks. Further, a mapping is learned from part-related visual features to good grasping points. The probabilistic logic module ma…

This paper presents a real-time, object-independent grasp synthesis method which can be used for closed-loop grasping. Our proposed Generative Grasping Convolutional Neural Network (GG-CNN) predicts the quality and pose of grasps at every pixel. This one-to-one mapping from a depth image overcomes limitations of current deep-learning grasping techniques by avoiding discrete sampling of grasp candidates and long computation times. Additionally, our GG-CNN is orders of magnitude smaller while detecting stable grasps with equivalent performance to current state-of-the-art techniques. The light-we…

A challenge in robot grasping is to achieve task-grasping which is to select a grasp that is advantageous to the success of tasks before and after grasps. One of the frameworks to address this difficulty is Learning-from-Observation (LfO), which obtains various hints from human demonstrations. This paper solves three issues in the grasping skills in the LfO framework: 1) how to functionally mimic human-demonstrated grasps to robots with limited grasp capability, 2) how to coordinate grasp skills with reaching body mimicking, 3) how to robustly perform grasps under object pose and shape uncerta…

The soft gripper has shown their potential in robust grasping due to their inherent properties-low, control complexity, and high adaptability. However, the deformation of the soft gripper when interacting with objects bring inaccuracy of grasped objects, which causes instability for robust grasping and further manipulation. In this paper, we present an omni-directional adaptive soft finger that can sense deformation based on embedded optical fibers and the application of mac…

Gathering real-world data from the robot quickly becomes a bottleneck when constructing a robot learning system for grasping. In this work, we design a semi-supervised grasping system that, on top of a small sample of robot experience, takes advantage of images of products to be picked, which are collected without any interactions with the robot. We validate our findings both in the simulation and in the real world. In the regime of a small number of robot training samples, taking advantage of the unlabeled data allows us to achieve performance at the level of 10-fold bigger dataset size used …
Autonomous robotic grasping plays an important role in intelligent robotics. However, how to help the robot grasp specific objects in object stacking scenes is still an open problem, because there are two main challenges for autonomous robots: (1)it is a comprehensive task to know what and how to grasp; (2)it is hard to deal with the situations in which the target is hidden or covered by other objects. In this paper, we propose a multi-task convolutional neural network for autonomous robotic grasping, which can help the robot find the target, make the plan for grasping and finally grasp the ta…

Robotic Grasping has always been an active topic in robotics since grasping is one of the fundamental but most challenging skills of robots. It demands the coordination of robotic perception, planning, and control for robustness and intelligence. However, current solutions are still far behind humans, especially when confronting unstructured scenarios. In this paper, we survey the advances of robotic grasping, starting from the classical formulations and solutions to the modern ones. By reviewing the history of robotic grasping, we want to provide a complete view of this community, and perhaps…
This paper studies robustness in planar grasping from a geometric perspective. By treating grasping as a process that shapes the free-space of an object over time, we can define three types of certificates to guarantee success of a grasp: (a) invariance under an initial set, (b) convergence towards a goal grasp, and (c) observability over the final object pose. We develop convex-combinatorial models for each of these certificates, which can be expressed as simple semi-algebraic relations under mild-modeling assumptions. By leveraging these models to synthesize certificates, we optimize certifi…

In this framework, the object shapes are embedded into a low-dimensional feature space using an AutoEncoder (encoder-decoder) based structure network. Deep reinforcement learning (DRL) has been proven to be a powerful paradigm for learning complex control policy autonomously. Numerous recent applications of DRL in robotic grasping have successfully trained DRL robotic agents end-to-end, mapping visual inputs into control instructions directly, but the amount of training data required may hinder these applications in practice. In this paper, we propose a DRL based robotic visual grasping framework, in which visual perception and control policy are trained separately rather than end-to-end. The visual perception produces physical descriptions …
