We present a new model for simulating the electromagnetic fluctuations with frequencies much lower than the ion cyclotron frequency in plasmas confined in general magnetic configurations. This novel model (termed as GK-E&B) employs nonlinear gyrokinetic equations formulated in terms of electromagnetic fields along with momentum balance equations for solving fields. It, thus, not only includes kinetic effects, such as wave-particle interaction and microscopic (ion Larmor radius scale) physics; but also is computationally more efficient than the conventional formulation described in terms of potentials. As a benchmark, we perform linear as well as nonlinear simulations of the kinetic Alfven wave; demonstrating physics in agreement with the analytical theories.
Following the method in Ref.(1), this paper introduces a fundamental Lagrangian 1-form on the particle's coordinates, which determines the dynamics of all ions and electrons of the magnetized plasma with low-frequency magnetic perturbations. An Ampere-Vlasov model is utilized to model this fundamental Lagrangian 1-form based on a kind of coarse-grained scheme. With the Cary-Littlejohn single-parameter Lie transform method, a new fundamental Lagrangian 1-form on the gyrocenter coordinates is derived through transforming the one on particle's coordinates. This new 1-form determines the dynamics …
A high-order extension is presented for the electromagnetic gyrokinetic formulation in which the parallel canonical momentum is taken as one of phase space coordinates. The high-order displacement vector associated with the guiding-center transformation should be considered in the long wavelength regime. This yields addtional terms in the gyrokinetic Hamiltonian which lead to modifications to the gyrokinetic Poisson and Ampère equations. In addition, the high-order piece of the guiding-center transformation for the parallel canonical momentum should be also kept in the electromagnetic model. T…
It is shown that a considerable improvement in the global gyrokinetic electromagnetic simulations can be achieved by a slight modification of the simulation scheme. The new scheme is verified, simulating a Toroidal Alfvén Eigenmode in tokamak geometry at low perpendicular mode numbers, the so-called "MHD limit". Also, an electromagnetic drift mode has been successfully simulated in a stellarator.
A new gauge-free electromagnetic gyrokinetic theory is developed, in which the gyrocenter equations of motion and the gyrocenter phase-space transformation are expressed in terms of the perturbed electromagnetic fields, instead of the usual perturbed potentials. Gyrocenter polarization and magnetization are derived explicitly from the gyrocenter Hamiltonian, up to first order in the gyrocenter perturbation expansion. Expressions for the sources in Maxwell's equations are derived in a form that is suitable for simulation studies, as well as kinetic-gyrokinetic hybrid modeling.
The nonlinear (full-$f$) electromagnetic gyrokinetic Vlasov-Maxwell equations are derived in the parallel-symplectic representation from an Eulerian gyrokinetic variational principle. The gyrokinetic Vlasov-Maxwell equations are shown to possess an exact energy conservation law, which is derived by Noether method from the gyrokinetic variational principle. Here, the gyrocenter Poisson bracket and the gyrocenter Jacobian contain contributions from the perturbed magnetic field. In the full-$f$ formulation of the gyrokinetic Vlasov-Maxwell theory presented here, the gyrocenter parallel-Ampère equ…
It's pointed out that the traditional gyrokinetic theory dealing with low frequency electromagnetic perturbation violates the near identity transformation, which is supposed to be obeyed by Lie perturbed transformation theory, if resonance happens between ωand k\cdot v. A modification is given to overcome this problem by not requiring all components in the first order Lagrangian 1-form equaling zero. A numerical example is given as an application of the new theory.
As an alternative option to kinetic electrons, the gyrokinetic total-f particle-in-cell (PIC) code XGC1 has been extended to the MHD/fluid type electromagnetic regime by combining gyrokinetic PIC ions with massless drift-fluid electrons analogous to Chen and Parker, Physics of Plasmas 8, 441 (2001). Two representative long wavelength modes, shear Alfvén waves and resistive tearing modes, are verified in cylindrical and toroidal magnetic field geometries.
This is a report about a comparison of collisionless simulations on global modes (i.e. low poloidal mode number) with gyrokinetic code NEMORB against analytical theory and other codes. Only axisymmetric modes, i.e. with toroidal mode number n=0, are considered, and flat equilibrium profiles. Benchmarks are performed for GAMs against local analytical theory. In the presence of energetic ions, local benchmarks of NEMORB are performed against semilagrangian gyrokinetic code GYSELA. The models of adiabatic vs trapped-kinetic- vs fully-kinetic-electrons and of electrostatic vs electromagnetic at ve…
This comment clarifies the relation of the research in a recently published article [Phys. Plasmas 14, 042503 (2007)] to other prior publications addressing the inclusion of electromagnetic and drift-kinetic electron physics in gyrokinetic simulation, raises a concern related to the inclusion of kinetic electrons in a system with magnetic shear, and discusses alternatives in the face of an important limitation on the general applicability of the algorithm described therein.
Gyrokinetic theory is arguably the most important tool for numerical studies of transport physics in magnetized plasmas. However, exact local energy-momentum conservation law for the electromagnetic gyrokinetic system has not been found despite continuous effort. Without such a local conservation law, energy-momentum can be instantaneously transported across spacetime, which is unphysical and casts doubt on the validity of numerical simulations based on the gyrokinetic theory. Standard Noether's procedure for deriving conservation laws from corresponding symmetries does not apply to gyrokineti…
A two-fold analysis of electromagnetic core tokamak instabilities in the framework of the gyrokinetic theory is presented. First principle theoretical foundations of the gyrokinetic theory are used to explain and justify the numerical results obtained with the global electromagnetic particle-in-cell code Orb5 whose model is derived from the Lagrangian formalism. The energy conservation law corresponding to the Orb5 model is derived from the Noether theorem and implemented in the code as a diagnostics for energy balance and conservation verification. An additional Noether theorem based diagnost…
Global simulations of electromagnetic turbulence, collisionless tearing modes, and Alfven Eigenmodes in the presence of fast particles are carried out using the gyrokinetic particle-in-cell codes ORB5 (E. Lanti et al, Comp. Phys. Comm., ${\bf 251}$, 107072 (2020)) and EUTERPE (V. Kornilov et al, Phys. Plasmas, ${\bf 11}$, 3196 (2004)) in tokamak and stellarator geometries. Computational feasibility of simulating such complex coupled systems is demonstrated.
Electromagnetic turbulence is addressed in tokamak and stellarator plasmas with the global gyrokinetic particle-in-cell codes ORB5 [E. Lanti et al, Comp. Phys. Comm, vol. 251, 107072 (2020)] and EUTERPE [V. Kornilov et al, Phys. Plasmas, vol. 11, 3196 (2004)]. The large-aspect-ratio tokamak, down-scaled ITER, and Wendelstein 7-X geometries are considered. The main goal is to increase the plasma beta, the machine size, the ion-to-electron mass ratio, as well as to include realistic-geometry features in such simulations. The associated numerical requirements and the computational cost for the ca…
A conservative scheme has been formulated and verified for gyrokinetic particle simulations of electromagnetic waves and instabilities in magnetized plasmas. An electron continuity equation derived from drift kinetic equation is used to time advance electron density perturbation by using the perturbed mechanical flow calculated from the parallel vector potential, and the parallel vector potential is solved by using the perturbed canonical flow from the perturbed distribution function. In gyrokinetic particle simulations using this new scheme, shear Alfvén wave dispersion relation in shearless …
The kinetic effects of electrons are important to long wavelength magnetohydrodynamic(MHD)instabilities and short wavelength drift-Alfvenic instabilities responsible for turbulence transport in magnetized plasmas, since the non-adiabatic electron can interact with, modify and drive the low frequency instabilities. A novel conservative split weight scheme is proposed for the electromagnetic simulation with drift kinetic electrons in tokamak plasmas, which shows great computational advantages that there is no numerical constrain of electron skin depth on the perpendicular grid size without sacri…
Understanding turbulent transport physics in the tokamak edge and scrape-off layer (SOL) is critical to developing a successful fusion reactor. The dynamics in these regions plays a key role in achieving high fusion performance by determining the edge pedestal that suppresses turbulence in H-mode. Additionally, the survivability of a reactor is set by the heat load to the vessel walls, making it important to understand turbulent spreading of heat as it flows along open magnetic field lines in the SOL. Large-amplitude fluctuations, magnetic X-point geometry, and plasma interactions with materia…
We demonstrate that cross-field transport in the scrape-off layer (SOL) can be moderately increased by electromagnetic effects in high-beta regimes, resulting in a broader electron heat-flux width on the endplates. This conclusion is taken from full-$f$ electromagnetic gyrokinetic simulations of a helical SOL model that roughly approximates the SOL of the National Spherical Torus Experiment (NSTX). The simulations have been performed with the Gkeyll code, which recently became the first code to demonstrate the capability to simulate electromagnetic gyrokinetic turbulence on open magnetic field…
We present a gyrokinetic theory for the electromagnetic waves and instabilities with frequencies much lower than the ion cyclotron frequency in finite-$β$ anisotropic uniform plasmas. Here, $β$ is the ratio between plasma and magnetic pressures. Kinetic effects due to both the finite Larmor radii and wave-particle resonances are fully kept in the analysis. Corresponding linear dispersion relation and wave polarizations, valid for general $β$ value and perpendicular wavelength, are then specifically derived for a bi-Maxwellian plasma. Analytic expressions for the criteria of kinetic firehose an…
We derive a gyrokinetic formalism which is very generally valid: the ordering allows both large inhomogeneities in plasma flow and magnetic field at long wavelength, like typical drift-kinetic theories, as well as fluctuations at the gyro-scale. The underlying approach is to order the vorticity to be small, and to assert that the timescales in the local plasma frame are long compared to the gyrofrequency. Unlike most other derivations, we do not treat the long and short wavelength components of the fluctuating fields separately; the single-field description defines the particle motion and thei…

The first gyrokinetic simulations of plasma turbulence in the Texas Helimak device, a simple magnetized torus, are presented. The device has features similar to the scrape-off layer region of tokamaks, such as bad-curvature-driven instabilities and sheath boundary conditions on the end plates, which are included in these simulations. Comparisons between simulations and measurements from the experiment show similarities, including equilibrium profiles and fluctuation amplitudes that approach experimental values, but also some important quantitative differences. Both experimental and simulation …
A fully implicit particle-in-cell method for handling the $v_\parallel$-formalism of electromagnetic gyrokinetics has been implemented in XGC. By choosing the $v_\parallel$-formalism, we avoid introducing the non-physical skin terms in Ampère's law, which are responsible for the well-known ``cancellation problem" in the $p_\parallel$-formalism. The $v_\parallel$-formalism, however, is known to suffer from a numerical instability when explicit time integration schemes are used due to the appearance of a time derivative in the particle equations of motion from the inductive component of the elec…
The first linear global electromagnetic gyrokinetic particle simulation on the excitation of toroidicity induced Alfven eigenmode (TAE) by energetic particles is reported. With an increase in the energetic particle pressure, the TAE frequency moves down into the lower continuum.
The exact global energy conservation laws for the full-$f$ and $δf$ formulations of the nonlinear electromagnetic gyrokinetic equations in general magnetic geometry are presented. In both formulations, the relation between polarization and magnetization effects in the gyrokinetic Poisson and Ampère equations and the quadratic ponderomotive gyrocenter Hamiltonian is emphasized.
We present an energy-conserving discontinuous Galerkin scheme for the full-$f$ electromagnetic gyrokinetic system in the long-wavelength limit. We use the symplectic formulation and solve directly for $\partial A_\parallel/\partial t$, the inductive component of the parallel electric field, using a generalized Ohm's law derived directly from the gyrokinetic equation. Linear benchmarks are performed to verify the implementation and show that the scheme avoids the Ampère cancellation problem. We perform a nonlinear electromagnetic simulation in a helical open-field-line system as a rough model o…
This paper presents the current state of the global gyrokinetic code ORB5 as an update of the previous reference [Jolliet et al., Comp. Phys. Commun. 177 409 (2007)]. The ORB5 code solves the electromagnetic Vlasov-Maxwell system of equations using a PIC scheme and also includes collisions and strong flows. The code assumes multiple gyrokinetic ion species at all wavelengths for the polarization density and drift-kinetic electrons. Variants of the physical model can be selected for electrons such as assuming an adiabatic response or a ``hybrid'' model in which passing electrons are assumed adi…
The effect of varying magnetic shear on scrape-off layer turbulence and profiles is studied via electromagnetic gyrokinetic simulations of a helical scrape-off layer model. We develop a model helical geometry with magnetic shear and a corresponding field-aligned coordinate system, which is used for simulations with the Gkeyll code. We find that perpendicular transport is reduced in cases with stronger shear, resulting in higher peak particle and heat fluxes to the endplates. Electromagnetic effects slightly increase transport in strong shear cases.
Internal kink instabilities have been studied in straight tokamak geometry employing an electromagnetic gyrokinetic particle-in-cell (PIC) code. The ideal-MHD internal kink mode and the collisionless $m = 1$ tearing mode have been successfully simulated with the PIC code. Diamagnetic effects on the internal kink modes have also been investigated.
The exact energy and angular-momentum conservation laws are derived by Noether method for the Hamiltonian and symplectic representations of the gauge-free electromagnetic gyrokinetic Vlasov-Maxwell equations. These gyrokinetic equations, which are solely expressed in terms of electromagnetic fields, describe the low-frequency turbulent fluctuations that perturb a time-independent toroidally-axisymmetric magnetized plasma. The explicit proofs presented here provide a complete picture of the transfer of energy and angular momentum between the gyrocenters and the perturbed electromagnetic fields,…
A gyrokinetic model is presented that can properly describe strong flows, large and small amplitude electromagnetic fluctuations occurring on scale lengths ranging from the electron Larmor radius to the equilibrium perpendicular pressure gradient scale length, and large deviations from thermal equilibrium. The formulation of the gyrokinetic model is based on a second order description of the single charged particle dynamics, derived from Lie perturbation theory, where the fast particle gyromotion is decoupled from the slow drifts, assuming that the ratio of the ion sound Larmor radius to the p…

In magnetized plasma turbulence, the couplings of perpendicular spatial scales that arise due to the nonlinear interactions are analyzed from the perspective of the free-energy exchanges. The plasmas considered here, with appropriate ion or electron adiabatic electro-neutrality responses, are described by the gyrokinetic formalism in a toroidal magnetic geometry. Turbulence develops due to the electrostatic fluctuations driven by temperature gradient instabilities, either ion temperature gradient (ITG) or electron temperature gradient (ETG). The analysis consists in decomposing the system into…
Previous limiter-biasing experiments on the Texas Helimak, a simple magnetized torus, have been inconclusive on the effect of flow shear on turbulence levels. To investigate this, the first gyrokinetic simulations of limiter biasing in the Helimak using the plasma physics code Gkeyll have been carried out, and results are presented here. For the scenarios considered, turbulence is mostly driven by the interchange instability, which depends on gradients of equilibrium density profiles. An analysis of both experimental and simulation data demonstrates that shear rates are mostly less than than l…
The foundations of gyrokinetic theory are reviewed with an emphasis on the applications of Lagrangian and Hamiltonian methods used in the derivation of nonlinear gyrokinetic Vlasov-Maxwell equations. These reduced dynamical equations describe the turbulent evolution of low-frequency electromagnetic fluctuations in nonuniform magnetized plasmas with arbitrary magnetic geometry.
The question of how nonlinear interactions redistribute the energy of fluctuations across available degrees of freedom is of fundamental importance in the study of turbulence and transport in magnetized weakly collisional plasmas, ranging from space settings to fusion devices. In this letter, we present a theory for the dual cascade found in such plasmas, which predicts a range of new behavior that distinguishes this cascade from that of neutral fluid turbulence. These phenomena are explained in terms of the constrained nature of spectral transfer in nonlinear gyrokinetics. Accompanying this t…
An accurate description of turbulence up to the transport time scale is essential for predicting core plasma profiles and enabling reliable calculations for designing advanced scenarios and future devices. Here, we exploit the gap separation between turbulence and transport time scales and couple the global gyrokinetic code GENE to the transport-solver Tango, including kinetic electrons, collisions, realistic geometries, toroidal rotation and electromagnetic effects for the first time. This approach overcomes gyrokinetic codes' limitations and enables high-fidelity profile calculations in expe…
The linear gyrokinetic stability properties of magnetically confined electron-positron plasmas are investigated in the parameter regime most likely to be relevant for the first laboratory experiments involving such plasmas, where the density is small enough that collisions can be ignored and the Debye length substantially exceeds the gyroradius. Although the plasma beta is very small, electromagnetic effects are retained, but magnetic compressibility can be neglected. The work of a previous publication (Helander, 2014) is thus extended to include electromagnetic instabilities, which are of imp…
The gyrokinetic turbulence code GS2 was used to investigate the effects of plasma beta on linear, collisionless ion temperature gradient (ITG) modes and trapped electron modes (TEM) in National Compact Stellarator Experiment (NCSX) geometry. Plasma beta affects stability in two ways: through the equilibrium and through magnetic fluctuations. The first was studied here by comparing ITG and TEM stability in two NCSX equilibria of differing beta values, revealing that the high beta equilibrium was marginally more stable than the low beta equilibrium in the adiabatic-electron ITG mode case. Howeve…
The non-linear evolution of a magnetic island is studied using the Vlasov gyro-kinetic code GKW. The interaction of electromagnetic turbulence with a self-consistently growing magnetic island, generated by a tearing unstable $Δ' > 0$ current profile, is considered. The turbulence is able to seed the magnetic island and bypass the linear growth phase by generating structures that are approximately an ion gyro-radius in width. The non-linear evolution of the island width and its rotation frequency, after this seeding phase, is found to be modified and is dependent on the value of the plasma beta…
The nonlinear gyrokinetic code GS2 has been extended to treat non-axisymmetric stellarator geometry. Electromagnetic perturbations and multiple trapped particle regions are allowed. Here, linear, collisionless, electrostatic simulations of the quasi-axisymmetric, three-field period National Compact Stellarator Experiment (NCSX) design QAS3-C82 have been successfully benchmarked against the eigenvalue code FULL. Quantitatively, the linear stability calculations of GS2 and FULL agree to within ~10%.
Global electromagnetic gyrokinetic simulations show the existence of near threshold conditions for both a high-$n$ kinetic ballooning mode (KBM) and an intermediate-$n$ kinetic version of peeling-ballooning mode (KPBM) in the edge pedestal of two DIII-D H-mode discharges. When the magnetic shear is reduced in a narrow region of steep pressure gradient, the KPBM is significantly stabilized, while the KBM is weakly destabilized and hence becomes the most-unstable mode. Collisions decrease the KBM's critical $β$ and increase the growth rate.
We introduce modes of instantaneous optimal growth of free energy for the fully electromagnetic gyrokinetic equations. We demonstrate how these "optimal modes" arise naturally from the free energy balance equation, allowing its convenient decomposition, and yielding a simple picture of energy flows. Optimal modes have a number of other favorable features, such as their low-dimensionality, efficiency of computation, and the fact that their growth rates provide a rigorous and "tight" upper bound on both the nonlinear growth rate of energy, and the linear growth rate of traditional gyrokinetic (n…
The purpose of this document is to find an analytical solution for the gyrokinetic equation under specific, simplificative hypotheses. The case I am considering is that of a collisional plasma in the presence of a chain of magnetic islands. The presence of the magnetic islands causes the onset of perturbative fields, in particular an electrostatic field, with a gradient length-scale comparable with the island's width. When the island's width w becomes comparable with the ion Larmor radius rho_i , the drift-kinetic equation is inadequate to treat the transport and the calculation of the neoclas…
A new representation of electromagnetic gyrokinetic Vlasov-Maxwell theory is presented in which the gyrocenter equations of motion are expressed solely in terms of the perturbed electric and magnetic fields. In this representation, the gyrocenter symplectic (Poisson-bracket) structure and the gyrocenter Jacobian contain electric and magnetic perturbation terms associated with the standard first-order gyrocenter polarization and magnetization terms that traditionally appear in the gyrokinetic Maxwell equations. In addition, the gyrocenter polarization drift (which includes perturbed magnetic-fi…
