Let $X_{1},...,X_{m}$ be a family of real smooth vector fields defined in $\mathbb{R}^{n}$, $1$-homogeneous with respect to a nonisotropic family of dilations and satisfying Hörmander's rank condition at $0$ (and therefore at every point of $\mathbb{R}^{n}$). The vector fields are not assumed to be translation invariant with respect to any Lie group structure. Let us consider the nonvariational evolution operator $$ \mathcal{H}:=\sum_{i,j=1}^{m}a_{i,j}(t,x)X_{i}X_{j}-\partial_{t}% $$ where $(a_{i,j}(t,x))_{i,j=1}^{m}$ is a symmetric uniformly positive $m\times m$ matrix and the entries $a_{ij}$ are bounded Hölder continuous functions on $\mathbb{R}^{1+n}$, with respect to the "parabolic" distance induced by the vector fields. We prove the existence of a global heat kernel $Γ(\cdot;s,y)\in C_{X,\mathrm{loc}}^{2,α}(\mathbb{R}^{1+n}\setminus\{(s,y)\})$ for $\mathcal{H}$, such that $Γ$ satisfies two-sided Gaussian bounds and $\partial_{t}Γ, X_{i}Γ,X_{i}X_{j}Γ$ satisfy upper Gaussian bounds on every strip $[0,T]\times\mathbb{R}^n$. We also prove a scale-invariant parabolic Harnack inequality for $\mathcal{H}$, and a standard Harnack inequality for the corresponding stationary operator $$
\mathcal{L}:=\sum_{i,j=1}^{m}a_{i,j}(x)X_{i}X_{j}.
$$
with Hölder continuos coefficients.
We report on recent results and a new line of research at the crossroad of two major theories in the analysis of partial differential equations. The celebrated De Giorgi-Nash-Moser theory shows H{ö}lder estimates and the Harnack inequality for uniformly elliptic or parabolic equations with rough coefficients in divergence form. The theory of hypoellipticity of H{ö}rmander shows, under general "bracket" conditions, the regularity of solutions to partial differential equations combining first and second order derivative operators when ellipticity fails in some directions. We discuss recent exten…
The main result established in this paper is the existence and uniqueness of strong solutions to the obstacle problem for a class of subelliptic operators in non-divergence form. The operators considered are structured on a set of smooth vector fields in R^n; X = \{X_0, X_1, ...,X_q\}, q \le n, satisfying Hörmanders finite rank condition. In this setting, X_0 is a lower order term while {X1, ...,X_q} are building blocks of the subelliptic part of the operator. In order to prove this, we establish an embedding theorem under the assumption that the set {X_0, X_1, ...,X_q} generates a homogeneous…
In this paper, we establish a scale invariant Harnack inequality for some inhomogeneous parabolic equations in a suitable intrinsic geometry dictated by the nonlinearity. The class of equations that we consider correspond to the parabolic counterpart of the equations studied by Julin in [10] where a generalized Harnack inequality was obtained which quantifies the strong maximum principle. Our version of parabolic Harnack (see Theorem 1.2) when restricted to the elliptic case is however quite different from that in [10]. The key new feature of this work is an appropriate modification of the sta…
We develop an abstract theory to obtain Harnack inequality for non homogeneous PDEs in the setting of quasi metric spaces. The main idea is to adapt the notion of double ball and critical density property given by Di Fazio, Gutiérrez, Lanconelli, taking into account the right hand side of the equation. Then we apply the abstract procedure to the case of subelliptic equations in non divergence form involving Grushin vector fields and to the case of X-elliptic operators in divergence form.
We consider viscosity solutions to non-homogeneous degenerate and singular parabolic equations of the $p$-Laplacian type and in non-divergence form. We provide local Hölder and Lipschitz estimates for the solutions. In the degenerate case, we prove the Hölder regularity of the gradient. Our study is based on a combination of the method of alternatives and the improvement of flatness estimates.
We prove invariant Harnack inequalities for certain classes of non-divergence form equations of Kolmogorov type. The operators we consider exhibit invariance properties with respect to a homogeneous Lie group structure. The coefficient matrix is assumed either to satisfy a Cordes-Landis condition on the eigenvalues, or to admit a uniform modulus of continuity.

In this paper we continue the study initiated in [FGN] concerning the obstacle problem for a class of parabolic non-divergence operators structured on a set of vector fields X = {X_1,...,X_q} in R^n with C^1-coefficients satisfying Hörmander's finite rank condition, i.e., the rank of Lie{X_1,...,X_q} equals n at every point in R^n. In [FGN] we proved, under appropriate assumptions on the operator and the obstacle, the existence and uniqueness of strong solutions to a general obstacle problem. The main result of this paper is that we establish further regularity, in the interior as well as at t…
We prove the unique solvability in weighted Sobolev spaces of non-divergence form elliptic and parabolic equations on a half space with the homogeneous Neumann boundary condition. All the leading coefficients are assumed to be only measurable in the time variable and have small mean oscillations in the spatial variables. Our results can be applied to Neumann boundary value problems for {\em stochastic} partial differential equations with BMO$_x$ coefficients.
In this paper we consider viscosity solutions of a class of non-homogeneous singular parabolic equations $$\partial_t u-|Du|^γΔ_p^N u=f,$$ where $-1<γ<0$, $1<p<\infty$, and $f$ is a given bounded function. We establish interior Hölder regularity of the gradient by studying two alternatives: The first alternative uses an iteration which is based on an approximation lemma. In the second alternative we use a small perturbation argument.
Using the quasiconformal mappings theory and Sobolev extension operators, we obtain estimates of principal frequencies of free non-homogeneous membranes. The suggested approach is based on connections between divergence form elliptic operators and quasiconformal mappings. Free non-homogeneous membranes we consider as circular membranes in the quasiconformal geometry associated with non-homogeneity of membranes. As a consequence we get a connection between principal frequencies of free membranes and the smallest-circle problem (initially suggested by J.~J. Sylvester in 1857).
We study $s$-fractional $p$-Laplacian type equations with discontinuous kernel coefficients in divergence form to establish $W^{s+σ,q}$ estimates for any choice of pairs $( σ,q)$ with $q\in(p,\infty)$ and $σ\in\left(0,\min\left\{\frac{s}{p-1},1-s\right\}\right)$ under the assumption that the associated kernel coefficients have small BMO seminorms near the diagonal. As a consequence, we find in the literature an optimal fractional Sobolev regularity of such a non-homogeneous nonlocal equation when the right-hand side is presented by a suitable fractional operator. Our results are new even in th…
The completeness of solutions of homogeneous as well as non-homogeneous unsteady Stokes equations are examined. A necessary and sufficient condition for a divergence-free vector to represent the velocity field of a possible unsteady Stokes flow in the absence of body forces is derived.
We obtained estimates for first eigenvalues of the Dirichlet boundary value problem for elliptic operators in divergence form (i.e. for the principal frequency of non-homogeneous membranes) in bounded domains $Ω\subset \mathbb C$ satisfying quasihyperbolic boundary conditions. The suggested method is based on the quasiconformal composition operators on Sobolev spaces and their applications to constant estimates in the corresponding Sobolev-Poincaré inequalities. We also prove a variant of the Rayleigh-Faber-Khran inequality for a special case of these elliptic operators.
Let X_1,...,X_q be the basis of the space of horizontal vector fields on a homogeneous Carnot group in R^n (q<n). We consider a degenerate elliptic system of N equations, in divergence form, structured on these vector fields, where the coefficients a_{ab}^{ij} (i,j=1,2,...,q, a,b=1,2,...,N) are real valued bounded measurable functions defined in a bounded domain A of R^n, satisfying the strong Legendre condition and belonging to the space VMO_{loc}(A) (defined by the Carnot-Caratheodory distance induced by the X_i's). We prove interior HW^{1,p} estimates (2<p<\infty) for weak solutions to the …
We study a class of non-divergence form elliptic and parabolic equations with singular first-order coefficients in an upper half space with the homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition. In the simplest setting, the operators in the equations under consideration appear in the study of fractional heat and fractional Laplace equations. Intrinsic weighted Sobolev spaces are found in which the existence and uniqueness of strong solutions are proved under certain smallness conditions on the weighted mean oscillations of the coefficients in small parabolic cylinders. Our results are new even when the…
We study a class of second-order degenerate linear parabolic equations in divergence form in $(-\infty, T) \times \mathbb R^d_+$ with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition on $(-\infty, T) \times \partial \mathbb R^d_+$, where $\mathbb R^d_+ = \{x \in \mathbb R^d\,:\, x_d>0\}$ and $T\in {(-\infty, \infty]}$ is given. The coefficient matrices of the equations are the product of $μ(x_d)$ and bounded uniformly elliptic matrices, where $μ(x_d)$ behaves like $x_d^α$ for some given $α\in (0,2)$, which are degenerate on the boundary $\{x_d=0\}$ of the domain. Under a partially VMO assumption on th…
The usual Helmholtz decomposition gives a decomposition of any vector valued function into a sum of gradient of a scalar function and rotation of a vector valued function under some mild condition. In this paper we show that the vector valued function of the second term i.e. the divergence free part of this decomposition can be further decomposed into a sum of a vector valued function polarized in one component and the rotation of a vector valued function also polarized in the same component. Hence the divergence free part only depends on two scalar functions. Further we show the so called com…
We prove square function estimates in $L_2$ for general operators of the form $B_1D_1+D_2B_2$, where $D_i$ are partially elliptic constant coefficient homogeneous first order self-adjoint differential operators with orthogonal ranges, and $B_i$ are bounded accretive multiplication operators, extending earlier estimates from the Kato square root problem to a wider class of operators. The main novelty is that $B_1$ and $B_2$ are not assumed to be related in any way. We show how these operators appear naturally from exterior differential systems with boundary data in $L_2$. We also prove non-tang…
In this paper, we study both elliptic and parabolic equations in non-divergence form with singular degenerate coefficients. Weighted and mixed-norm $L_p$-estimates and solvability are established under some suitable partially weighted BMO regularity conditions on the coefficients. When the coefficients are constants, the operators are reduced to extensional operators which arise in the study of fractional heat equations and fractional Laplace equations. Our results are new even in this setting and in the unmixed case. For the proof, we establish both interior and boundary Lipschitz estimates f…
A non-homogeneous mixed local and nonlocal problem in divergence form is investigated for the validity of the global Calderón-Zygmund estimate for the weak solution to the Dirichlet problem of a nonlinear elliptic equation. We establish an optimal Calderón-Zygmund theory by finding not only a minimal regularity requirement on the mixed local and nonlocal operators but also a lower level of geometric assumption on the boundary of the domain for the global gradient estimate. More precisely, assuming that the nonlinearity of the local operator, whose prototype is the classical $(-Δ_p)^1$-Laplace …
This article studies the solutions in H 1 of a steady transport equation with a divergence-free driving velocity that is W 1,$\infty$ , in a two-dimensional bounded polygon. Since the velocity is assumed fully non-homogeneous on the boundary, existence and uniqueness of the solution require a boundary condition on the open part $Γ$ -- where the normal component of u is strictly negative. In a previous article, we studied the solutions in L 2 of this steady transport equation. The methods, developed in this article, can be extended to prove existence and uniqueness of a solution in H 1 with Dir…
Let $X$ be a suitable function space and let $\cG \subset X$ be the set of divergence free vector fields generating a global, smooth solution to the incompressible, homogeneous three dimensional Navier-Stokes equations. We prove that a sequence of divergence free vector fields converging in the sense of distributions to an element of $\cG$ belongs to $\cG$ if $n$ is large enough, provided the convergence holds "anisotropically" in frequency space. Typically that excludes self-similar type convergence. Anisotropy appears as an important qualitative feature in the analysis of the Navier-Stokes e…
Let $L$ be a homogeneous divergence form higher order elliptic operator with complex bounded measurable coefficients on $\mathbb{R}^n$ and $X$ a ball quasi-Banach function space on $\mathbb{R}^n$ satisfying some mild assumptions. Denote by $H_{X,\, L}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ the Hardy space, associated with both $L$ and $X$, which is defined via the Lusin area function related to the semigroup generated by $L$. In this article, the authors establish both the maximal function and the Riesz transform characterizations of $H_{X,\, L}(\mathbb{R}^n)$. The results obtained in this article have a wide range o…
In this paper we consider a cascade system in non divergence form which models the interaction between two different species, the first one can be seen as a predator and the other as a prey. Both of them depend on time, on age and on space. Moreover, the diffusion coefficients degenerate at the boundary of domain. We study, in particular, null controllability of the system via the observability inequality for the non homogeneous adjoint problem, which is deduced by Carleman estimates.
The three-dimensional, homogeneous, incompressible Navier-Stokes equations are studied in the absence of viscosity in one direction. It is shown that there are arbitrarily large initial data generating a unique global solution, the main feature of which is that they are slowly varying in the direction where viscosity is missing. The difficulty arises from the complete absence of a regularising effect in this direction. The special structure of the nonlinear term, joint with the divergence-free condition on the velocity field, is crucial in obtaining the result.
This paper is a generalization of the author's previous work [14]. We extend the argument [14] for any uniformly elliptic operator in divergence form $\mathcal{L}u=-div(A(x)\nabla u)$, more precisely, we study a fractional type degenerate elliptic equation posed in bounded domains $$ \partial_t u=div(u\,A(x)\nabla \mathcal{L}^{-s}u) $$ where $\mathcal{L}^{-s}$ is the inverse $s$-fractional elliptic operator for any $s \in (0,1)$. We show the existence of solutions for measurable and bounded non-negative initial data, and homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition.
We study the fractal pointwise convergence for the equation $i\hbar\partial_tu + P(D)u = 0$, where the symbol $P$ is real, homogeneous and non-singular. We prove that for initial data $f\in H^s(\mathbb{R}^n)$ with $s>(n-α+1)/2$ the solution $u$ converges to $f$ $\mathcal{H}^α$-a.e, where $\mathcal{H}^α$ is the $α$-dimensional Hausdorff measure. We improve upon this result depending on the dispersive strength of $P$. On the other hand, for a family of polynomials $P$ and given $α$, we exploit a Talbot-like effect to construct initial data whose solutions $u$ diverge in sets of Hausdorff dimensi…
In this paper we discuss global existence of the solution of the Maxwell and Newton system of equations, describing the interaction of a rigid charge distribution with the electromagnetic field it generates. A unique solution is proved to exist (for regular charge distributions) on suitable homogeneous and non-homogeneous Sobolev spaces, for the electromagnetic field, and on coordinate and velocity space for the charge; provided initial data belong to the subspace that satisfies the divergence part of Maxwell's equations.
We show that divergence free vector fields which belong to L^1 on stratified, nilpotent groups are in the dual space of functions whose sub-gradient are L^Q integrable where Q is the homogeneous dimension of the group. This was first obtained on Euclidean space by Bourgain and Brezis.
