It is established that for every pair of additive forms $f=\sum_{i=1}^s a_i x_i^k, g=\sum_{i=1}^s b_i x_i^k$ of degree $k$ in $s>2k^2$ variables the equations $f=g=0$ have a non-trivial $p$-adic solution for all odd primes $p$.
We show that Artin's conjecture concerning p-adic solubility of Diophantine equations fails for infinitely many systems of r homogeneous diagonal equations whenever r>1.
The author reviews results and conjectures of Selberg on a class of Dirichlet series functions which share properties with the Riemann zeta function, and he relates this work to the theory of Artin L-functions.
This is an exposition of work on Artin's Conjecture on the zeros of $p$-adic forms. A variety of lines of attack are described, going back to 1945. However there is particular emphasis on recent developments concerning quartic forms on the one hand, and systems of quadratic forms on the other.
For a global function field K of positive characteristic p, we show that Artin conjecture for L-functions of geometric p-adic Galois representations of K is true in a non-trivial p-adic disk but is false in the full p-adic plane. In particular, we prove the non-rationality of the geometric unit root L-functions.
E. Artin conjectured that any integer $a >1$ which is not a perfect square is a primitive root modulo $p$ for infinitely many primes $p.$ Let $f_a(p)$ be the multiplicative order of the non-square integer $a$ modulo the prime $p.$ M. R. Murty and S. Srinivasan [10] showed that if $\sum_{p<x} \frac 1 {f_a(p)}= O(x^{1/4})$ then Artin's conjecture is true for $a.$ We relate the Murty-Srinivasan condition to sums involving the cyclotomic periods from the subfields of $\mathbb Q(e^{2πi/p})$ corresponding to the subgroups $<a> \subseteq \mathbb F*_p.$
This is an expanded version of a write-up of a talk given in the fall of 2000 in Oberwolfach. A large part of it is intended to be understandable by non-number theorists with a mathematical background. The talk covered some of the history, results and ideas connected with Artin's celebrated primitive root conjecture dating from 1927. In the update several new results established after 2000 are also discussed.
We discuss how one could study asymptotics of cyclotomic quantities via the mean values of certain multiplicative functions and their Dirichlet series using a theorem of Delange. We show how this could provide a new approach to Artin's conjecture on primitive roots. We focus on whether a fixed prime has a certain order modulo infinitely many other primes. We also give an estimate for the mean value of one such Dirichlet series.
In this article, we introduce a systematic and uniform construction of non-singular plane curves of odd degrees $n \geq 5$ which violate the local-global principle. Our construction works unconditionally for $n$ divisible by $p^2$ for some odd prime number $p$. Moreover, our construction also works for $n$ divisible by some $p \geq 5$ which satisfies a conjecture on $p$-adic properties of the fundamental units of $\mathbb{Q}(p^{1/3})$ and $\mathbb{Q}((2p)^{1/3})$. This conjecture is a natural cubic analogue of the classical Ankeny-Artin-Chowla-Mordell conjecture for $\mathbb{Q}(p^{1/2})$ and e…
Let K/F be an arbitrary Galois extension of number fields and r be a representation of Gal(K/F) into GSp(4,C). Let E_16 be the elemetary abelian group of order 16 and C_5 the cyclic group of order 5. If the image of r in the projective space PGSp(4,C) is isomorphic to the semidirect product of E_16 by C_5, then we show r satisfies Artin's conjecture by proving r corresponds to an automorphic representation. A specific case is given where r is primitive, so Artin's conjecture does not follow from previous results.
We prove that (under the assumption of the generalized Riemann hypothesis) a totally real multiquadratic number field $K$ has a positive density of primes $p \in \mathbb{Z}$ for which the image of the unit group $(\mathcal{O}_K)^{\times})$ in $(\mathcal{O}_K/p\mathcal{O}_K)^{\times})$ has minimal index $(p-1)/2$ if and only if $K$ contains a unit of norm $-1$.
We examine the sums $S(k,\,n)$ of the $k-$th powers of the $ϕ(n)$ integers $α_1<α_2<\cdots<α_{ϕ(n)}$ less than and prime to $n$ (Euler set) and prove a formula (new) for $S(3,\,n)$. If $n$ equals a prime $p$, we prove a theorem showing a connection of $S(3,\,p)$ with Artin's conjectural constant for primitive roots and with other functions involving primes.
We establish some new cases of Artin's conjecture. Our results apply to Galois representations over $\Q$ with image $S_5$ satisfying certain local hypotheses, the most important of which is that complex conjugation is conjugate to $(12)(34)$. In fact, we prove the stronger claim conjectured by Langlands that these representations are automorphic. For the irreducible representations of dimensions 4 and 6, our result follows from known 2-dimensional cases of Artin's conjecture (proved by Sasaki) as well as the functorial properties of the Asai transfer proved by Ramakrishnan. For the irreducible…
Suppose $ m,n\geq 2 $ are co prime integers. We prove certain new symmetries of the base $ n $ representation of $ 1/m $, and in particular characterize the subgroup generated by $ n $ inside $ (\mathbb{Z}/m\mathbb{Z})^\times $. As an application we give a sufficient condition for a prime $ p $ such that a non square number $ n $ is a primitive root modulo $ p $.
Since Hooley's seminal 1967 resolution of Artin's primitive root conjecture under the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis, numerous variations of the conjecture have been considered. We present a framework generalizing and unifying many previously considered variants, and prove results in this full generality (under GRH).
We formulate several variants of a conjecture relating the arithmetic degree of certain hermitian fibre bundles with the values of the logarithmic derivative of Artin's L-functions at negative integers. This generalizes conjectures by Colmez and Gross-Deligne and complements Beilinson's conjectures for the Artin motives. We announce several results in the direction of these statements.
The concept of Artin transfer pattern $((\ker(T_{K,N_i}))_i,(\mathrm{Cl}_p(N_i))_i)$ for homogeneous multiplets $(N_1,\ldots,N_m)$ of unramified cyclic prime degree p extensions $N_i/K$ of a base field K with p-class transfer homomorphisms$T_{K,N_i}:\,\mathrm{Cl}_p(K)\to\mathrm{Cl}_p(N_i)$ is generalized for heterogeneous multiplets of ramified extensions. By application to quadratic subfields K of dihedral fields N of degree 2p with an odd prime p, a conjecture of Scholz concerning the index of subfield units, $(U_N:U_0)$, for ramified extensions N/K with conductor f>1 is verified computation…
We show that the sum of the traces of Frobenius elements of Artin $L$-functions in a family of $G$-fields satisfies the Gaussian distribution under certain counting conjectures. We prove the counting conjectures for $S_4$ and $S_5$-fields. We also show central limit theorem for modular form $L$-functions with the trivial central character with respect to congruence subgroups as the level goes to infinity.
In 1927, Artin conjectured that any integer other than -1 or a perfect square generates the multiplicative group $\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z}^\times$ for infinitely many $p$. In \cite{MoSt}, Moree and Stevenhagen considered a two-variable version of this problem, and proved a positive density result conditionally to the generalized Riemann Hypothesis by adapting a proof by Hooley for the original conjecture (\cite{Ho}). In this article, we prove an unconditional lower bound for this two-variable problem. In particular, we prove an estimate for the number of distinct primes which divide one of the f…
Let $Γ\subset\mathbb{Q}^*$ be a finitely generated subgroup and let $p$ be a prime such that the reduction group $Γ_p$ is a well defined subgroup of the multiplicative group $\mathbb{F}_p^*$. We prove an asymptotic formula for the average of the number of primes $p\le x$ for which the index $[\mathbb{F}_p^*:Γ_p]=m$. The average is performed over all finitely generated subgroups $Γ=\langle a_1,\dots,a_r \rangle\subset\mathbb{Q}^*$, with $a_i\in\mathbb{Z}$ and $a_i\le T_i$ with a range of uniformity: $T_i>\exp(4(\log x \log\log x)^{\frac{1}{2}})$ for every $i=1,\dots,r$. We also prove an asympto…
We define an Artin prime for an integer $g$ to be a prime such that $g$ is a primitive root modulo that prime. Let $g\in \mathbb{Z}\setminus\{-1\}$ and not be a perfect square. A conjecture of Artin states that the set of Artin primes for $g$ has a positive density. In this paper we study a generalization of this conjecture for the primes produced by a polynomial and explore its connection with the problem of finding a fixed integer $g$ and a prime producing polynomial $f(x)$ with the property that a long string of consecutive primes produced by $f(x)$ are Artin primes for $g$. By employing so…
Artin conjectured that certain Galois representations should give rise to entire L-series. We give some history on the conjecture and motivation of why it should be true by discussing the one-dimensional case. The first known example to verify the conjecture in the icosahedral case did not surface until Buhler's work in 1977. We explain how this icosahedral representation is attached to a modular elliptic curve isogenous to its Galois conjugates, and then explain how it is associated to a cusp form of weight 5 with level prime to 5.
Let a and b be non-zero rational numbers that are multiplicatively independent. We study the natural density of the set of primes p for which the subgroup of the multiplicative group of the finite field with p elements generated by (a\mod p) contains (b\mod p). It is shown that, under assumption of the generalized Riemann hypothesis (GRH), this density exists and equals a positive rational multiple of the universal constant S=\prod_{p prime}(1-p/(p^3-1)). An explicit value of the density is given under mild conditions on a and b. This extends and corrects earlier work of P.J. Stephens (1976). …
We extend the modularity lifting result of the arXiv:1111.2804 to allow Galois representations with some ramification at p. We also prove modularity mod 2 and 5 of certain Galois representations. We use these results to prove many new cases of the strong Artin conjecture over totally real fields in which 5 is unramified. As an ingredient of the proof, we provide a general result on the automatic analytic continuation of overconvergent p-adic Hilbert modular forms of finite slope which substantially generalizes a similar result in arXiv:1111.2804.
We consider refined conjectures of Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer type for the Hasse-Weil-Artin L-series of abelian varieties over general number fields. We shall, in particular, formulate several new such conjectures and establish their precise relation to previous conjectures, including to the relevant special case of the equivariant Tamagawa number conjecture. We also derive a wide range of concrete interpretations and explicit consequences of these conjectures that, in general, involve a thoroughgoing mixture of difficult archimedean considerations related to refinements of the conjecture of De…
In this paper, we introduce and study a variant of Kummer's notion of (ir)regularity of primes which we call G-irregularity. It is based on Genocchi numbers $G_n$, rather than Bernoulli number $B_n.$ We say that an odd prime $p$ is G-irregular if it divides at least one of the integers $G_2,G_4,\ldots, G_{p-3}$, and G-regular otherwise. We show that, as in Kummer's case, G-irregularity is related to the divisibility of some class number. Furthermore, we obtain some results on the distribution of G-irregular primes. In particular, we show that each primitive residue class contains infinitely ma…
We consider an analogue of Artin's primitive root conjecture for units in real quadratic fields. Given such a nontrivial unit, for a rational prime p which is inert in the field the maximal order of the unit modulo p is p+1. An extension of Artin's conjecture is that there are infinitely many such inert primes for which this order is maximal. This is known at present only under the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis. Unconditionally, we show that for any choice of 7 units in different real quadratic fields satisfying a certain simple restriction, there is at least one of the units which satisfies …
This paper is continuation of the paper "Primitive roots in quadratic field". We consider an analogue of Artin's primitive root conjecture for algebraic numbers which is not a unit in real quadratic fields. Given such an algebraic number, for a rational prime $p$ which is inert in the field the maximal order of the unit modulo $p$ is $p^2-1$. An extension of Artin's conjecture is that there are infinitely many such inert primes for which this order is maximal. we show that for any choice of 85 algebraic numbers satisfying a certain simple restriction, there is at least one of the algebraic num…
We present a group-theoretic criterion under which one may verify the Artin conjecture for some (non-monomial) Galois representations, up to finite height in the complex plane. In particular, the criterion applies to S5 and A5 representations. Under more general conditions, the technique allows for the possibility of verifying the Riemann hypothesis for Dedekind zeta functions of non-abelian extensions of Q. In addition, we discuss two methods for locating zeros of arbitrary L-functions. The first uses the explicit formula and techniques (developed jointly with Andreas Strombergsson) for compu…
Deligne's conjecture that $\ell$-adic sheaves on normal schemes over a finite field admit $\ell'$-companions was proved by L. Lafforgue in the case of curves and by Drinfeld in the case of smooth schemes. In this paper, we extend Drinfeld's theorem to smooth Artin stacks and deduce Deligne's conjecture for coarse moduli spaces of smooth Artin stacks. We also extend related theorems on Frobenius eigenvalues and traces to Artin stacks.
We derive a fully explicit version of the Selberg trace formula for twist-minimal Maass forms of weight 0 and arbitrary conductor and nebentypus character, and apply it to prove two theorems. First, conditional on Artin's conjecture, we classify the even 2-dimensional Artin representations of small conductor; in particular, we show that the even icosahedral representation of smallest conductor is the one found by Doud and Moore, of conductor 1951. Second, we verify the Selberg eigenvalue conjecture for groups of small level, improving on a result of Huxley from 1985.
We say that a prime number $p$ is an $\textit{Artin prime}$ for $g$ if $g$ mod $p$ generates the group $(\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z})^{\times}$. For appropriately chosen integers $d$ and $g$, we present a conjecture for the asymptotic number $π_{d,g}(x)$ of primes $p \leq x$ such that both $p$ and $p+d$ are Artin primes for $g$. In particular, we identify a class of pairs $(d,g)$ for which $π_{d,g}(x) =0$. Our results suggest that the distribution of Artin prime pairs, amongst the ordinary prime pairs, is largely governed by a Poisson binomial distribution.
Following the natural instinct that when a group operates on a number field then every term in the class number formula should factorize `compatibly' according to the representation theory (both complex and modular) of the group, we are led to some natural questions about the $p$-part of the classgroup of any CM Galois extension of $\Q$ as a module for $\Gal(K/Q)$, in the spirit of Herbrand-Ribet's theorem on the $p$-component of the class number of $Q(ζ_p)$. In trying to formulate these questions, we are naturally led to consider $L(0,ρ)$, for $ρ$ an Artin representation, in situations where …
We formulate (and prove under a certain assumption) a conjecture relating the order of Somekawa's Milnor $K$-group attached to a torus $T$ and the value of the Artin $L$-function attached to the cocharacter group of $T$ (regarded as an Artin representation) at $s=-1$. The case $T=\G_m$ reduces to the classical Birch-Tate conjecture.
We conjecture that the p-adic L-function of a non-trivial irreducible even Artin character over a totally real field is non-zero at all non-zero integers. This implies that a conjecture formulated by Coates and Lichtenbaum at negative integers extends in a suitable way to all positive integers. We also state a conjecture that for certain characters the Iwasawa series underlying the p-adic L-series have no multiple roots except for those corresponding to the zero at s=0 of the p-adic L-function. We provide some theoretical evidence for our first conjecture, and prove both conjectures by means o…
