Let $k$ be a number field and $G$ be a finite group. Let $\mathfrak{F}_{k}^{G}(Q)$ be the family of number fields $K$ with absolute discriminant $D_K$ at most $Q$ such that $K/k$ is normal with Galois group isomorphic to $G$. If $G$ is the symmetric group $S_n$ or any transitive group of prime degree, then we unconditionally prove that for all $K\in\mathfrak{F}_k^G(Q)$ with at most $O_ε(Q^ε)$ exceptions, the $L$-functions associated to the faithful Artin representations of $\mathrm{Gal}(K/k)$ have a region of holomorphy and non-vanishing commensurate with predictions by the Artin conjecture and the generalized Riemann hypothesis. This result is a special case of a more general theorem. As applications, we prove that:
1) there exist infinitely many degree $n$ $S_n$-fields over $\mathbb{Q}$ whose class group is as large as the Artin conjecture and GRH imply, settling a question of Duke;
2) for a prime $p$, the periodic torus orbits attached to the ideal classes of almost all totally real degree $p$ fields $F$ over $\mathbb{Q}$ equidistribute on $\mathrm{PGL}_p(\mathbb{Z})\backslash\mathrm{PGL}_p(\mathbb{R})$ with respect to Haar measure;
3) for each $\ell\geq 2$, the $\ell$-torsion subgroups of the ideal class groups of almost all degree $p$ fields over $k$ (resp. almost all degree $n$ $S_n$-fields over $k$) are as small as GRH implies; and
4) an effective variant of the Chebotarev density theorem holds for almost all fields in such families.
In this expository note we show the inception and development of the Heilbronn characters and their application to the holomorphy of quotients of Artin L-functions. Further we use arithmetic Heilbronn characters introduced by Wong, to deal with holomorphy of quotients of certain L-functions, e.g,, L-functions associated to CM elliptic curves. Furthermore we use the supercharacter theory introduced by Diaconis and Isaacs to study Artin L-functions associated to such characters. We conclude the note surveying about various other unconditional approaches taken based on character theory of finite …
We prove three main results: all Langlands-Shahidi automorphic $L$-functions over function fields are rational; after twists by highly ramified characters our automorphic $L$-functions become polynomials; and, if $π$ is a globally generic cuspidal automorphic representation of a split classical group or a unitary group ${\bf G}_n$ and $τ$ a cuspidal (unitary) automorphic representation of a general linear group, then $L(s,π\times τ)$ is holomorphic for $\Re(s) > 1$ and has at most a simple pole at $s=1$. We also prove the holomorphy and non-vanishing of automorphic exterior square, symmetric s…
Let E be an elliptic curve and ρan Artin representation, both defined over the rational numbers. Let p be a prime at which E has good reduction. We prove that there exists an infinite set of Dirichlet characters χ, ramified only at p, such that the Artin-twisted L-values L(E,ρχ,β) are non-zero when βlies in a specified region in the critical strip (assuming the conjectural continuations and functional equations for these L-functions). The new contribution of our paper is that we may choose our characters to be ramified only at one prime, which may divide the conductor of ρ.
We prove a rigid analytic analogue of the Artin vanishing theorem. Precisely, we prove (under mild hypotheses) that the geometric etale cohomology of any Zariski-constructible sheaf on any affinoid rigid space $X$ vanishes in all degrees above the dimension of $X$. Along the way, we show that branched covers of normal rigid spaces can often be extended across closed analytic subsets, in analogy with a classical result for complex analytic spaces. We also prove a general comparison theorem relating the algebraic and analytic etale cohomologies of any affinoid rigid space.
Prime counting functions are believed to exhibit, in various contexts, discrepancies beyond what famous equidistribution results predict; this phenomenon is known as Chebyshev's bias. Rubinstein and Sarnak have developed a framework which allows to conditionally quantify biases in the distribution of primes in general arithmetic progressions. Their analysis has been generalized by Ng to the context of the Chebotarev density theorem, under the assumption of the Artin holomorphy conjecture, the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis, as well as a linear independence hypothesis on the zeros of Artin $L$-…
We establish some new cases of Artin's conjecture. Our results apply to Galois representations over $\Q$ with image $S_5$ satisfying certain local hypotheses, the most important of which is that complex conjugation is conjugate to $(12)(34)$. In fact, we prove the stronger claim conjectured by Langlands that these representations are automorphic. For the irreducible representations of dimensions 4 and 6, our result follows from known 2-dimensional cases of Artin's conjecture (proved by Sasaki) as well as the functorial properties of the Asai transfer proved by Ramakrishnan. For the irreducible…
We provide a complete proof of a duality theorem for the fppf cohomology of either a curve over a finite field or a ring of integers of a number field, which extends the classical Artin-Verdier Theorem in étale cohomology. We also prove some finiteness and vanishing statements.
Let $p$ be a fixed odd prime. Let $E$ be an elliptic curve defined over a number field with either good ordinary reduction or multiplicative reduction at each prime of $F$ above $p$. We shall study the characteristic element of the Selmer group of $E$ over a $p$-adic Lie extension. In particular, we relate the order of vanishing of these characteristic element evaluated at Artin representations to the Selmer coranks and their twists in the intermediate subextensions of the $p$-adic Lie extension.
It follows from the work of Artin and Hooley that, under assumption of the generalized Riemann hypothesis, the density of the set of primes $q$ for which a given non-zero rational number $r$ is a primitive root modulo $q$ can be written as an infinite product $\prod_p δ_p$ of local factors $δ_p$ reflecting the degree of the splitting field of $X^p-r$ at the primes $p$, multiplied by a somewhat complicated factor that corrects for the `entanglement' of these splitting fields. We show how the correction factors arising in Artin's original primitive root problem and some of its generalizations ca…
Let $E$ be an elliptic curve defined over $\mathbb{Q}$ and without complex multiplication. For a prime $p$ of good reduction for $E$, we write $\#E_p(\mathbb{F}_p) = p + 1 - a_p(E)$ for the number of $\mathbb{F}_p$-rational points of the reduction $E_p$ of $E$ modulo $p$. Under the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis (GRH), we study the primes $p$ for which the integer $|a_p(E)|$ is a prime. In particular, we prove the following results: (i) the number of primes $p < x$ for which $|a_p(E)|$ is a prime is bounded from above by $C_1(E) \frac{x}{(\log x)^2}$ for some constant $C_1(E)$; (ii) the number…
We use former results on geometric local $\varepsilon$-factors over curves in order to prove a factorization result for the determinant of the cohomology of an $\ell$-adic sheaf over an arbitrary proper scheme over a perfect field of positive characteristic $p$ distinct from $\ell$. The local contributions are constructed by iterating vanishing cycle functors as well as certain "refined Artin conductors", the latter being exact additive functors which can be considered as linearized versions of Artin conductors and local $\varepsilon$-factors. We provide several applications of our higher dime…

Let p be a prime. We study pro-p groups of p-absolute Galois type, as defined by Lam-Liu-Sharifi-Wake-Wang. We prove that the pro-p completion of the right-angled Artin group associated to a chordal simplicial graph is of p-absolute Galois type, and moreover it satisfies a strong version of the Massey vanishing property. Also, we prove that Demushkin groups are of p-absolute Galois type, and that the free pro-p product -- and, under certain conditions, the direct product -- of two pro-p groups of p-absolute Galois type satisfying the Massey vanishing property is again a pro-p group of p-absolu…
The primary goal of this article is to study $p$-adic Beilinson conjectures in the presence of exceptional zeros for Artin motives over CM fields. In more precise terms, we address a question raised by Hida and Tilouine on the order of vanishing of Katz $p$-adic $L$-functions associated to CM fields, by means of a leading term formula we prove in terms of Rubin-Stark elements. In the particular case when the CM field in question is imaginary quadratic, our leading term formula and its consequences we record herein are unconditional.
This article is devoted to the elliptic Stark conjecture formulated by Darmon, Lauder and Rotger [DLR], which proposes a formula for the transcendental part of a $p$-adic avatar of the leading term at $s=1$ of the Hasse-Weil-Artin $L$-series $L(E,\varrho_1\otimes \varrho_2,s)$ of an elliptic curve $E$ twisted by the tensor product $\varrho_1\otimes \varrho_2$ of two odd $2$-dimensional Artin representations, when the order of vanishing is two. The main ingredient of this formula is a $2\times 2$ $p$-adic regulator involving the $p$-adic formal group logarithm of suitable Stark points on $E$. T…
Let $N/K$ be a Galois extension of $p$-adic number fields and let $V$ be a $p$-adic representation of the absolute Galois group $G_K$ of $K$. The equivariant local $ε$-constant conjecture $C_{EP}^{na}(N/K, V)$ is related to the compatibility of the equivariant Tamagawa number conjecture with the functional equation of Artin $L$-functions and it can be formulated as the vanishing of a certain element $R_{N/K}$ in $K_0(\mathbb Z_p[G],\mathbb Q_p^c[G])$. One of the main technical difficulties in the computation of $R_{N/K}$ arises from the so-called cohomological term $C_{N/K}$, which requires th…
For a prime number p and a number field k, we first study certain etale cohomology groups with coefficients associated to a p-adic Artin representation of its Galois group, where we twist the coefficients using a modified Tate twist with a p-adic index. We show that those groups are cofinitely generated and explicitly compute an additive Euler characteristic. When k is totally real and the representation is even, we relate the order of vanishing of the p-adic L-function at a point of its domain and the corank of such a cohomology group with a suitable p-adic twist. If the groups are finite, th…
We study the Fitting ideals over the finite layers of the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of $\mathbb{Q}$ of Selmer groups attached to the Rankin--Selberg convolution of two modular forms $f$ and $g$. Inspired by the Theta elements for modular forms defined by Mazur and Tate in ``Refined conjectures of the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer type'', we define new Theta elements for Rankin--Selberg convolutions of $f$ and $g$ using Loeffler--Zerbes' geometric $p$-adic $L$-functions attached to $f$ and $g$. Under certain technical hypotheses, we generalize a recent work of Kim--Kurihara on elliptic cu…
