We propose a one-dimensional Floquet ladder that possesses two distinct topological transport channels with opposite directionality. The transport channels occur due to a $\mathbb Z_2$ non-Hermitian Floquet topological phase that is protected by time-reversal symmetry. The signatures of this phase are two pairs of Kramers degenerate Floquet quasienergy bands that are separated by an imaginary gap. We discuss how the Floquet ladder can be implemented in a photonic waveguide lattice and show that the direction of transport in the resulting waveguide structure can be externally controlled by focusing two light beams into adjacent waveguides. The relative phase between the two light beams selects which of the two transport channels is predominantly populated, while the angles of incidence of the two light beams determine which of the transport channels is suppressed by non-Hermitian losses. We identify the optimal lattice parameters for the external control of transport and demonstrate the robustness of this mechanism against disorder.
We consider asymmetric and symmetric dimerized two-leg ladders, comprising of four different lattice points per unit cell, illuminated by circularly polarized light. In the asymmetric dimerized ladder case, rungs are not perpendicular to the ladder's legs whereas the rungs are perpendicular to the legs for the symmetric one. Using the Floquet theory, we obtain an effective Hamiltonian to study topological properties of the systems. Depending on the dimerization strength and driving amplitude, it is shown that topologically protected edge states manifest themselves not only as a zero-energy ban…
Floquet engineering has the advantage of generating new phases with large topological invariants and many edge states by simple driving protocols. In this work, we propose an approach to obtain Floquet edge states with fourfold degeneracy and even-integer topological characterizations in a spinful Creutz ladder model, which is realizable in current experiments. Putting the ladder under periodic quenches, we found rich Floquet topological phases in the system, which belong to the symmetry class CII. Each of these phases is characterized by a pair of even integer topological invariants $(w_{0},w…
We introduce $\mathbb Z_2$-valued bulk invariants for symmetry-protected topological phases in $2+1$ dimensional driven quantum systems. These invariants adapt the $W_3$-invariant, expressed as a sum over degeneracy points of the propagator, to the respective symmetry class of the Floquet-Bloch Hamiltonian. The bulk-boundary correspondence that holds for each invariant relates a non-zero value of the bulk invariant to the existence of symmetry-protected topological boundary states. To demonstrate this correspondence we apply our invariants to a chiral Harper, time-reversal Kane-Mele, and parti…
Periodically driven non-Hermitian systems could possess exotic nonequilibrium phases with unique topological, dynamical and transport properties. In this work, we introduce an experimentally realizable two-leg ladder model subjecting to both time-periodic quenches and non-Hermitian effects, which belongs to an extended CII symmetry class. Due to the interplay between drivings and nonreciprocity, rich non-Hermitian Floquet topological phases emerge in the system, with each of them been characterized by a pair of even-integer topological invariants $(w_{0},w_π)\in2\mathbb{Z}\times2\mathbb{Z}$. U…
We present a non-Hermitian Floquet model with topological edge states in real and imaginary band gaps. The model utilizes two stacked honeycomb lattices which can be related via four different types of non-Hermitian time-reversal symmetry. Implementing the correct time-reversal symmetry provides us with either two counterpropagating edge states in a real gap, or a single edge state in an imaginary gap. The counterpropagating edge states allow for either helical or chiral transport along the lattice perimeter. In stark contrast, we find that the edge state in the imaginary gap does not propagat…
We consider a Floquet triple-layer setup composed of a two-dimensional electron gas with spin-orbit interactions, proximity coupled to an s-wave superconductor and to a ferromagnet driven at resonance. The ferromagnetic layer generates a time-oscillating Zeeman field which competes with the induced superconducting gap and leads to a topological phase transition. The resulting Floquet states support a second-order topological superconducting phase with a pair of localized zero-energy Floquet Majorana corner states. Moreover, the phase diagram comprises a Floquet helical topological superconduct…
In this paper, we use Floquet theory to theoretically study the effect of monochromatic circularly and linearly polarized light on the Hofstadter butterfly in the square lattice, which is induced by uniform perpendicular magnetic field. In the absence of laser, the butterfly has a fractal, self-similar structure particle-hole symmetry and reflection symmetry about magnetic flux $ϕ= 1/2$. These symmetries are preserved by the sub-lattice and the time-reversal symmetry, respectively. As the system is exposed to circularly polarized light, the original Hofsatdter butterfly in equilibrium is defor…
Studies of periodically driven one-dimensional many-body systems have advanced our understanding of complex systems and stimulated promising developments in quantum simulation. It is hence of interest to go one step further, by investigating the topological and dynamical aspects of periodically driven spin ladders as clean quasi-one-dimensional systems with spin-spin interaction in the rung direction. Specifically, we find that such systems display subharmonic magnetization dynamics reminiscent to that of discrete time crystals (DTCs) at finite system sizes. Through the use of generalized Jord…
We construct an effective Floquet lattice model for the triangular network that emerges in interlayer-biased minimally twisted bilayer graphene and which supports two chiral channels per link for a given valley and spin. We introduce the Floquet scheme with the one-channel triangular network and subsequently extend it to the two-channel case. From the bulk topological index (winding number) and finite system calculations, we find that both cases host anomalous Floquet insulators (AFIs) with a different gap-opening mechanism. In the one-channel network, either time-reversal or in-plane inversio…
We theoretically investigate the Floquet generation of second-order topological superconducting (SOTSC) phase, hosting Majorana corner modes (MCMs), considering a quantum spin Hall insulator (QSHI) with proximity induced superconducting $s$-wave pairing in it. Our dynamical prescription consists of the periodic kick in time-reversal symmetry breaking in-plane magnetic field and four-fold rotational symmetry breaking mass term while these Floquet MCMs are preserved by anti-unitary particle-hole symmetry. The first driving protocol always leads to four zero energy MCMs (i.e. one Majorana per cor…

Universal driving protocol for symmetry-protected Floquet topological phasesWe propose a universal driving protocol for the realization of symmetry-protected topological phases in $2+1$ dimensional Floquet systems. Our proposal is based on the theoretical analysis of the possible symmetries of a square lattice model with pairwise nearest-neighbor coupling terms. Among the eight possible symmetry operators we identify the two relevant choices for topological phases with either time-reversal, chiral, or particle-hole symmetry. From the corresponding symmetry conditions on the protocol parameters…
Floquet engineering is an important way to manipulate the electronic states of condensed matter physics. Recently, the discovery of the magnetic topological insulator MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ and its family provided a valuable platform to study magnetic topological phenomena, such as, the quantum anomalous Hall effect, the axion insulator state and the topological magnetoelectric effect. In this work, based on the effective model and first-principles calculations in combination with the Floquet theory, we reveal that the circularly polarized light (CPL) induces the sign reversal of the Chern number of o…
Based on the Floquet scattering theory, we analytically investigate the topological spin pumping for an exactly solvable model. Floquet spin Chern numbers are introduced to characterize the periodically time-dependent system. The topological spin pumping remains robust both in the presence and in the absence of the time-reversal symmetry, as long as the pumping frequency is smaller than the band gap, where the electron transport involves only the Floquet evanescent modes in the pump. For the pumping frequency greater than the band gap, where the propagating modes in the pump participate in the…
Results are presented for Floquet systems in two spatial dimensions where the Floquet driving breaks an effective time reversal symmetry. The driving protocol also induces flat bands that correspond to anomalous Floquet phases where the Chern number is zero and yet chiral edge modes exist. Analytic expressions for the edge modes, Berry curvature, and the orbital magnetization are derived for the flat bands. Results are also presented for the static Haldane model for parameters when the bands are flat. Floquet driving of the same model is shown to give rise to Chern insulators as well as anomal…
We theoretically investigate a periodically driven semimetal based on a square lattice. The possibility of engineering both Floquet Topological Insulator featuring Floquet edge states and Floquet higher order topological insulating phase, accommodating topological corner modes has been demonstrated starting from the semimetal phase, based on Floquet Hamiltonian picture. Topological phase transition takes place in the bulk quasi-energy spectrum with the variation of the drive amplitude where Chern number changes sign from $+1$ to $-1$. This can be attributed to broken time-reversal invariance (…

Topological edge states form at the edges of periodic materials with specific degeneracies in their modal spectra, such as Dirac points, under the action of effects breaking certain symmetries of the system. In particular, in Floquet topological insulators unidirectional edge states appear upon breakup of the effective time-reversal symmetry due to dynamical modulations of the underlying lattice potential. However, such states are usually reported for certain simple lattice terminations, for example, at zigzag or bearded edges in honeycomb lattices. Here we show that unconventional topological…
We study a model in (2+1)-dimensional spacetime that is realized by an array of chains, each of which realizes relativistic Majorana fields in (1+1)-dimensional spacetime, coupled via current-current interactions. The model is shown to have a lattice realization in an array of two-leg quantum spin-1/2 ladders. We study the model both in the presence and absence of time-reversal symmetry, within a mean-field approximation. We find regimes in coupling space where Abelian and non-Abelian spin liquid phases are stable. In the case when the Hamiltonian is time-reversal symmetric, we find regimes wh…
We study the scattering of the Dirac electrons by a point-like nonmagnetic impurity on the surface of a topological insulator, driven by a time-periodic gate voltage. It is found that, due to the doublet degenerate crossing points of different Floquet sidebands, resonant backscattering can happen for the surface electrons, even without breaking the time-reversal (TR) symmetry of the topological surface states (TSSs). The energy spectrum is reshuffled in a way quite different from that for the circularly polarized light, so that new features are exhibited in the Friedel oscillations of the loca…
In Hermitian topological systems, the bulk-boundary correspondence strictly constraints boundary transport to values determined by the topological properties of the bulk. We demonstrate that this constraint can be lifted in non-Hermitian Floquet insulators. Provided that the insulator supports an anomalous topological phase, non-Hermiticity allows us to modify the boundary states independently of the bulk, without sacrificing their topological nature. We explore the ensuing possibilities for a Floquet topological insulator with non-Hermitian time-reversal symmetry, where the helical transport …
Creating and manipulating topological states is a key goal of condensed matter physics. Periodic driving offers a powerful method to manipulate electronic states, and even to create topological states in solids. Here, we investigate the tunable Floquet states in a periodically driven higher-order nodal line semimetal with both spatial inversion and time-reversal symmetries. We found that the Floquet Weyl semimetal states, which support both one-dimensional hinge Fermi arc and two-dimensional surface Fermi arc states, can be induced in the higher-order nodal-line semimetal by shining circularly…
Floquet engineering is a convenient strategy to induce nonequilibrium phenomena in molecular and solid-state systems, or to dramatically alter the physicochemical properties of matter, bypassing costly and time-consuming synthetic modifications. In this article, we investigate theoretically some interesting consequences of the fact that an originally achiral molecular system can exhibit nonzero circular dichroism (CD) when it is driven with elliptically polarized light. More specifically, we consider an isotropic ensemble of small cyclic molecular aggregates in solution whose local low-frequen…
We investigate topological characteristics of the photon-dressed band structure of $α$-$\mathcal{T}_3$ lattice on being driven by off-resonant circularly polarized radiation. We obtain exact analytical expressions of the quasienergy bands over the first Brillouin zone. The broken time-reversal symmetry caused by the circularly polarized light lifts the triple point degeneracy completely at both the Dirac points. The gaps become unequal at $ {\bf K}$ and ${\bf K}^{\prime}$ (except at $α=0$ and 1), which reveals the absence of inversion symmetry in the system. At $α=1/\sqrt{2}$, the gap between …
We theoretically investigate the Floquet generation of second-order topological superconducting (SOTSC) phase in the high-temperature platform both in two-dimension (2D) and three-dimension (3D). Starting from a $d$-wave superconducting pairing gap, we periodically kick the mass term to engineer the dynamical SOTSC phase within a specific range of the strength of the drive. Under such dynamical breaking of time-reversal symmetry (TRS), we show the emergence of the \textit{weak} SOTSC phase, harboring eight corner modes \ie two zero-energy Majorana per corner, with vanishing Floquet quadrupole …
We study the three terminal S-QD-S-QD-S Josephson junction biased with commensurate voltages. In the absence of an applied voltage, the Andreev bound states on each quantum dot hybridize forming an `Andreev molecule'. However, understanding of this system in a non-equilibrium setup is lacking. Applying a dc voltage on the bijunction makes the system time-periodic, and the equilibrium Andreev bound states evolve into a ladder of resonances with a finite lifetime due to multiple Andreev reflections (MAR). Starting from the time-periodic Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations we map the problem to a tigh…
It is commonly assumed that topological phase transitions in topological superconductors are accompanied by a closing of the topological gap or a change of the symmetry of the system. We demonstrate that an unconventional topological phase transition with neither gap closing nor a change of symmetry is possible. We consider a nanoscopic length ladder of atoms on a superconducting substrate, comprising self-organized magnetic moments coupled to itinerant electrons. For a range of conditions, the ground state of such a system prefers helical magnetic textures, self-sustaining topologically nontr…
With the aim to reveal universal features of hadronic matter and correlated Dirac insulators in strong AC-electric fields, we study the $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric QCD with a finite quark mass driven by a rotating electric field $\mathcal{E}_x+i\mathcal{E}_y= E e^{iΩt}$. The analysis is done in the holographically dual D3/D7 system in the co-rotating frame, effectively. The nonequilibrium phase diagram is determined from the threshold electric field at which the insulator phase breaks down to a conductive phase due to the AC version of the Schwinger mechanism. The external field induces a r…
