Driven quantum materials often feature emergent topology, otherwise absent in static crystals. Dynamic bulk-boundary correspondence, encoded by nondissipative gapless modes residing near the Floquet zone center and/or boundaries, is its most prominent example. Here we show that topologically robust gapless dispersive modes appear along the grain boundaries, embedded in the interior of Floquet topological crystals, when the Floquet-Bloch band inversion occurring at a finite momentum (${\bf K}^{\rm Flq}_{\rm inv}$) and the Burgers vector (${\bf b}$) of the constituting array of dislocations satisfy ${\bf K}^{\rm Flq}_{\rm inv} \cdot {\bf b}=π$ (modulo $2 π$). Such nondissipative gapless states can be found near the center and/or edges of the Floquet Brillouin zone, irrespective of the drive protocol. We showcase these general outcomes for two-dimensional driven time-reversal symmetry breaking insulators. Promising experimental platforms hosting such dynamic topological dispersive bands in real materials are discussed.
Semimetals exhibiting nodal lines or nodal surfaces represent a novel class of topological states of matter. While conventional Weyl semimetals exhibit momentum-space Dirac monopoles, these more exotic semimetals can feature unusual topological defects that are analogous to extended monopoles. In this work, we describe a scheme by which nodal rings and nodal spheres can be realized in synthetic quantum matter through well-defined periodic-driving protocols. As a central result of our work, we characterize these nodal defects through the quantum metric, which is a gauge-invariant quantity assoc…
Weyl points with monopole charge $\pm 1$ have been extensively studied, however, real materials of multi-Weyl points, whose monopole charges are higher than $1$, have yet to be found. In this Rapid Communication, we show that nodal-line semimetals with nontrivial line connectivity provide natural platforms for realizing Floquet multi-Weyl points. In particular, we show that driving crossing nodal lines by circularly polarized light generates double-Weyl points. Furthermore, we show that monopole combination and annihilation can be observed in crossing-nodal-line semimetals and nodal-chain semi…
Valence and conduction bands in nodal loop semimetals (NLSMs) touch along closed loops in momentum space. If such loops can proliferate and link intricately, NLSMs become exotic topological phases with unconventional topological characteristics and potentially peculiar transport properties. In conventional quantum materials or cold atom systems alike, such exotic phases necessarily require non-local hopping and are therefore intrinsically unrealistic. In this work, we show how this hurdle can be surmounted through an experimentally feasible periodic driving scheme. In particular, by tuning the…
Weyl semimetals and nodal line semimetals are characterized by linear electronic bands touching at zero-dimensional points and one-dimensional lines, respectively. Recently, it has been predicted that nodal line semimetals can be driven into tunable Floquet-Weyl semimetals by circularly polarized light. Here, we study the occurrence of interface states between two regions of a nodal line semimetal shined by two beams of light with opposite circular polarizations. Within a minimal model, we find remarkable modifications of the energy structure by tuning the polarized light, such as the possible…
In mesoscopic physics, the application of a time-periodic drive leads to novel transport behaviour, which is absent in the static regimes. Here we consider a quantum pumping protocol, such that the quasiparticles of Weyl/multi-Weyl and nodal-line semimetals are subjected to a time-periodic rectangular potential well. The presence of an oscillating potential of frequency $ω$ creates equispaced Floquet side-bands with spacing $\hbar ω$. As a result, a Fano resonance is observed when the difference in the Fermi energy (i.e., the energy of the incident quasiparticle), and the energy of one of the …
Creating and manipulating topological states is a key goal of condensed matter physics. Periodic driving offers a powerful method to manipulate electronic states, and even to create topological states in solids. Here, we investigate the tunable Floquet states in a periodically driven higher-order nodal line semimetal with both spatial inversion and time-reversal symmetries. We found that the Floquet Weyl semimetal states, which support both one-dimensional hinge Fermi arc and two-dimensional surface Fermi arc states, can be induced in the higher-order nodal-line semimetal by shining circularly…
This work reports the general design and characterization of two exotic, anomalous nonequilibrium topological phases. In equilibrium systems, the Weyl nodes or the crossing points of nodal lines may become the transition points between higher-order and first-order topological phases defined on two-dimensional slices, thus featuring both hinge Fermi arc and surface Fermi arc. We advance this concept by presenting a strategy to obtain, using time-sequenced normal insulator phases only, Floquet higher-order Weyl semimetals and Floquet higher-order nexus semimetals, where the concerned topological…
In topological semimetals, the valence band and conduction band meet at zero-dimensional nodal points or one-dimensional nodal rings, which are protected by band topology and symmetries. In this Rapid Communication, we introduce "nodal-link semimetals", which host linked nodal rings in the Brillouin zone. We put forward a general recipe based on the Hopf map for constructing models of nodal-link semimetal. The consequences of nodal ring linking in the Landau levels and Floquet properties are investigated.
Hosting unique drumhead surface states enclosed by nodal lines, topological nodal-line semimetals exhibit novel transport phenomena. Thus, the exploration of topological semimetals with different nodal-line structures has attracted much attention. In this paper, we first find a second-order nodal line semimetal (SONLS), which has coexisting hinge Fermi arcs and drumhead surface states, in a $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry broken system. Then, without changing the intrinsic parameters, we artificially create exotic hybrid-order nodal-line semimetals hosted by different quasienergy gaps and rich nodal-l…
Weyl semimetals and nodal line semimetals are characterized by linear band touching at zero-dimensional points and one-dimensional lines, respectively. We predict that a circularly polarized light drives nodal line semimetals into Weyl semimetals. The Floquet Weyl points thus obtained are tunable by the incident light, which enables investigations of them in a highly controllable manner. The transition from nodal line semimetals to Weyl semimetals is accompanied by the emergence of a large and tunable anomalous Hall conductivity. Our predictions are experimentally testable by transport measure…
We propose a method for the measurement of adiabatic phases of periodically driven quantum systems coupled to an open cavity that enables dispersive readout. It turns out that the cavity transmission exhibits peaks at frequencies determined by a resonance condition that involves the dynamical and the geometric phase. Since these phases scale differently with the driving frequency, one can determine them by fitting the peak positions to the theoretically expected behavior. For the derivation of the resonance condition and for a numerical study, we develop a Floquet theory for the dispersive rea…
Motivated by recent experiments, we study the dynamics of a qubit quadratically coupled to its detector, a damped harmonic oscillator. We use a complex-environment approach, explicitly describing the dynamics of the qubit and the oscillator by means of their full Floquet state master equations in phase-space. We investigate the backaction of the environment on the measured qubit and explore several measurement protocols, which include a long-term full read-out cycle as well as schemes based on short time transfer of information between qubit and oscillator. We also show that the pointer become…
The topological phases of periodically-driven, or Floquet systems, rely on a perfectly periodic modulation of system parameters in time. Even the smallest deviation from periodicity leads to decoherence, causing the boundary (end) states to leak into the system's bulk. Here, we show that in one dimension this decay of topologically protected end states depends fundamentally on the nature of the bulk states: a dispersive bulk results in an exponential decay, while a localized bulk slows the decay down to a diffusive process. The localization can be due to disorder, which remarkably counteracts …
Nodal-line semimetals are characterized by a kind of topologically nontrivial bulk-band crossing, giving rise to almost flat surface states. Yet, a direct evidence of the surface states is still lacking. Here we study theoretically impurity effects in topological nodal-line semimetals based on the T-matrix method. It is found that for a bulk impurity, some in-gap states may be induced near the impurity site, while the visible resonant impurity state can only exist for certain strength of the impurity potentials. For a surface impurity, robust resonant impurity states exist in a wide range of i…
In recent years, realizing new topological phase of matter has been a hot topic in the fields of physics and materials science. Topological semimetals and metals can conventionally be classified into two types: type-I and type-II according to the tilting degree of the fermion cone. Here, it is the first time to report a new topological metal phase with the critical-type nodal line between type-I and type-II nodal line. The critical-type nodal line shows a unique nontrivial band crossing which is composed of a at band and a dispersive band and leads to a new fermionic state. We propose intermet…
Recent discoveries on topological characterization of gapless systems have attracted interest in both theoretical studies and experimental realizations. Examples of such gapless topological phases are Weyl semimetals, which exhibit 3D Dirac cones (Weyl points), and nodal line semimetals, which are characterized by line nodes (two bands touching along a line). Inspired by our previous discoveries that the kicked Harper model exhibits many fascinating features of Floquet topological phases, in this manuscript we consider a generalization of the model, where two additional periodic system paramet…
Topological nodal-line semimetals are predicted to exhibit unique drumhead-like surface states (DSS). Yet, a direct detection of such states remains a challenge. Here, we propose spin-resolved transport in a junction between a normal metal and a spin-orbit coupled nodal-line semimetal as the mechanism for their detection. Specifically, we find that in such a device, the DSS induce resonant spin-flipped reflection. This effect can be probed by both vertical spin transport and lateral charge transport between anti-parallel magnetic terminals. In the tunneling limit of the junction, both spin and…
Topological antiferromagnetic (AFM) spintronics is an emerging field of research, which exploits the Néel vector to control the topological electronic states and the associated spin-dependent transport properties. A recently discovered Néel spin-orbit torque has been proposed to electrically manipulate Dirac band crossings in antiferromagnets; however, a reliable AFM material to realize these properties in practice is missing. Here, we predict that room temperature AFM metal MnPd$_{2}$ allows the electrical control of the Dirac nodal line by the Néel spin-orbit torque. Based on first-principle…
Optical response of crystalline solids is to a large extent driven by excitations that promote electrons among individual bands. This allows one to apply optical and magneto-optical methods to determine experimentally the energy band gap - a fundamental property crucial to our understanding of any solid - with a great precision. Here we show that such conventional methods, applied with great success to many materials in the past, do not work in topological Dirac semimetals with a dispersive nodal line. There, the optically deduced band gap depends on how the magnetic field is oriented with res…

Topological semimetal phases in two-dimensional (2D) materials have gained widespread interest due to their potential applications in developing nanoscale devices. Despite the prediction of the Dirac/Weyl points in a wide variety of 2D candidates, materials featuring topological nodal lines are still in great scarcity. Herein, we predict two stable thinnest films of aluminum diboride with hyper- and hypo-stoichiometries of Al$_2$B$_2$ and AlB$_4$ as new 2D nonmagnetic Dirac nodal line semimetals (NLSMs) which promise to offer many novel features. Our elaborate electronic structure calculations…
We study the interplay of disorder and bandstructure topology in a Weyl semimetal with a tilted conical spectrum around the Weyl points. The spectrum of particles is given by the eigenvalues of a non-Hermitian matrix, which contains contributions from a Weyl Hamiltonian and complex self-energy due to electron elastic scattering on disorder. We find that the tilt-induced matrix structure of the self-energy gives rise to either a flat band or a nodal line segment at the interface of the electron and hole pockets in the bulk bandstructure of type-II Weyl semimetals depending on the Weyl cone incl…
