Brillouin spectroscopy emerges as a promising non-invasive tool for nanoscale imaging and sensing. One-dimensional semiconductor superlattice structures are eminently used for selectively enhancing the generation or detection of phonons at few GHz. While commercially available Brillouin spectrometers provide high-resolution spectra, they consist of complex experimental techniques and are not suitable for semiconductor cavities operating at a wide range of optical wavelengths. We develop a pragmatic experimental approach for conventional Brillouin spectroscopy integrating a widely tunable excitation-source. Our setup combines a fibered-based angular filtering and a spectral filtering based on a single etalon and a double grating spectrometer. This configuration allows probing confined acoustic phonon modes in the 20-300 GHz frequency range with excellent laser rejection and high spectral resolution. Remarkably, our scheme based on the excitation and collection of the enhanced Brillouin scattering signals through the optical cavity, allows for better angular filtering for low phonon frequency. It can be implemented for the study of cavity optomechanics and stimulated Brillouin scattering over broadband optical and acoustic frequency ranges.
We introduce a monolithic Brillouin generator based on a semiconductor micropillar cavity embedding a high frequency nanoacoustic resonator operating in the hundreds of GHz range. The concept of two nested resonators allows an independent design of the ultrahigh frequency Brillouin spectrum and of the optical device. We develop an optical free-space technique to characterize spontaneous Brillouin scattering in this monolithic device and propose a measurement protocol that maximizes the Brillouin generation efficiency in the presence of optically induced thermal effects. The compact and versati…
Achieving cavity-optomechanical strong coupling with high-frequency phonons provides a rich avenue for quantum technology development including quantum state-transfer, memory, and transduction, as well as enabling several fundamental studies of macroscopic phononic degrees-of-freedom. Reaching such coupling with GHz mechanical modes however has proved challenging, with a prominent hindrance being material- and surface-induced-optical absorption in many materials. Here, we circumvent these challenges and report the observation of optomechanical strong coupling to a high frequency (11 GHz) mecha…
We report the observation of stimulated Brillouin scattering and lasing at 1550~nm in barium fluoride (BaF$_2$) crystal. Brillouin lasing was achieved with ultra-high quality ($Q$) factor monolithic whispering gallery mode (WGM) mm-size disk resonators. Overmoded resonators were specifically used to provide cavity resonances for both the pump and all Brillouin Stokes waves. Single and multiple Brillouin Stokes radiations with frequency shift ranging from $8.2$ GHz up to $49$ GHz have been generated through cascaded Brillouin lasing. BaF$_2$ resonator-based Brillouin lasing can find potential a…
Microwave photonic systems are compelling for their ability to process signals at high frequencies and over extremely wide bandwidths as a basis for next generation communication and radar technologies. However, many applications also require narrow-band $(\sim\text{MHz})$ filtering operations that are challenging to implement using optical filtering techniques, as this requires reliable integration of ultra-high quality factor $(\sim 10^8)$ optical resonators. One way to address this challenge is to utilize long-lived acoustic resonances, taking advantage of their narrow-band frequency respon…
The coherent interaction between optical and acoustic waves via stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) is a fundamental tool for manipulating light at GHz frequencies. Its narrowband and noise-suppressing characteristics have recently enabled microwave-photonic functionality in integrated devices based on chalcogenide glasses, silica and silicon. Diamond possesses much higher acoustic and bandgap frequencies and superior thermal properties, promising increased frequency, bandwidth and power; however, fabrication of low-loss optical and acoustic guidance structures with the resonances matched to…
The simultaneous control of optical and mechanical waves has enabled a range of fundamental and technological breakthroughs, from the demonstration of ultra-stable frequency reference devices to the exploration of the quantum-classical boundaries in laser-cooling experiments. More recently, such an opto-mechanical interaction has been observed in integrated nano-waveguides and microcavities in the Brillouin regime, where short-wavelength mechanical modes scatters light at several GHz. Here we engineer coupled optical microcavities spectra to enable a low threshold excitation of mechanical trav…
We observe competition between the modulation instability (MI) and stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) in a 9.2-GHz broadband SBS slow light device, in which a standard 20-km-long single-mode LEAF fibre is used as the SBS medium. We find that MI is dominant and depletes most of the pump power when we use an intense pump beam at ~1.55 μm, where the LEAF fibre is anomalously dispersive. The dominance of the MI in the LEAF-fibre-based system suppresses the SBS gain, degrading the SBS slow light delay and limiting the SBS gain-bandwidth to 126 dB \cdot GHz. In a dispersion-shifted highly nonline…
Room temperature phonon dynamics in crystals of the high-Tc superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O(8+delta) were probed using Brillouin light scattering spectroscopy. Eight distinct acoustic modes were observed and identified, including two quasi-longitudinal bulk modes and four quasi-transverse bulk modes. A peak at a frequency shift of ~95 GHz with behaviour reminiscent of an optic phonon was also observed in the spectra. The existence and nature of these modes is a manifestation of the incommensurate structure of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O(8+delta) and suggests that it may be categorized as a so-called composite in…
Pulse compression processing based on stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) in an optical fiber is theoretically and experimentally demonstrated. Broadband microwave signal is electro-optically modulated onto the pump lightwave that is launched into one end of the fiber. Acoustic wave in the fiber inherits the amplitude and phase information of the pump lightwave and thus the coupling between the acoustic wave and pump lightwave leads to the auto-correlated process of the pump lightwave as well as the modulated microwave signal. Derivation of the SBS coupling equations shows that the short-pul…
In this paper, we propose a low-noise, bandwidth tunable microwave photonics filter (MPF) based on stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) losses. By suppressing the out-of-band signal with two broadened symmetric SBS losses, pass bandwidth can be tuned from 500 MHz to 10 GHz. Considering the limited interaction in the center frequency range, a flat-top response with 0.3 dB ripple is easily achieved. Unlike a SBS gain based filter, due to the transparency of the pass band in our proposed filter, hardly no noise is detected in a noise measurement against an obvious maximum 5 dB noise pedestal for…
Nyquist wavelength division (de)multiplexing (N-WDM) is a highly promising technique for next-generation high-speed elastic networks. In N-WDM, Nyquist filtering is an essential function that governs the channel spectral efficiency. However, most Nyquist filter implementations to date require either expensive, power-hungry digital electronics or complex arrangements of bulky optical components, hindering their adoption for important functions such as Nyquist channel shaping and reconfigurable optical add-drop multiplexers (ROADMs) for Nyquist super-channels. Here, we present a distinctive solu…
We demonstrate stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) lasing in a strongly coupled microcavity system. By coupling two silica toroid microcavities, we achieve large mode splitting of 11 GHz, whose frequency separation matches the Brillouin frequency shift of silica. The SBS light is resonantly amplified by pumping at the higher frequency side of the supermode splitting resonance. Since the mode splitting is adjusted by changing the gap distance between the two cavities, our system does not require precise control of a mm-sized cavity diameter to match the free-spectral spacing with the Brilloui…

A novel photonic approach to the time-frequency analysis of microwave signals is proposed based on the stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS)-assisted frequency-to-time mapping (FTTM). Two types of time-frequency analysis links, namely parallel SBS link and time-division SBS link are proposed. The parallel SBS link can be utilized to perform real-time time-frequency analysis of microwave signal, which provides a promising solution for real-time time-frequency analysis, especially when it is combined with the photonic integration technique. A simulation is made to verify its feasibility by analy…
Brillouin scattering in optical fibres is a fundamental interaction between light and sound with important implications ranging from optical sensors to slow and fast light. In usual optical fibres, light both excites and feels shear and longitudinal bulk elastic waves, giving rise to forward guided acoustic wave Brillouin scattering and backward stimulated Brillouin scattering. In a subwavelength-diameter optical fibre, the situation changes dramatically, as we here report with the first experimental observation of stimulated Brillouin scattering from surface acoustic waves. These Rayleigh-typ…
By generating a Brillouin laser in an optical microresonator, we realize a soliton Kerr microcomb through exciting the Kerr frequency comb using the generated Brillouin laser in the same cavity. The intracavity Brillouin laser pumping scheme enables us to access the soliton states with a blue-detuned input pump. Due to the ultra-narrow linewidth and the low-noise properties of the generated Brillouin laser, the observed soliton microcomb exhibits narrow-linewidth comb lines and stable repetition rate even by using a diode laser with relatively broad linewidth. Also, we demonstrate a low-noise …
We observe an interference pattern using a simple fiber-optic interferometer consisting of an electrical spectrum analyzer and a narrowband light source, which is commonly employed for observing the Brillouin gain spectrum. This interference pattern expands well beyond the frequency range corresponding to the Brillouin frequency shift in silica fibers (approximately 11 GHz at 1550 nm). Using both silica single-mode and polymer optical sensing fibers, we then experimentally prove that the distinctive noise in a self-heterodyne-based Brillouin measurement with an unoptimized polarization state o…
Stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) and Kerr-nonlinear four wave-mixing (FWM) are among the most important and widely studied nonlinear effects in optical fibres. At high powers SBS can be cascaded producing multiple Stokes waves spaced by the Brillouin frequency shift. Here, we investigate the complex nonlinear interaction of the cascade of Stokes waves, generated in a Fabry-Perot chalcogenide fibre resonator through the combined action of SBS and FWM. We demonstrate the existence of parameter regimes, in which pump and Stokes waves attain a phase-locked steady state. Real-time measurements…
We measure the Brillouin gain spectra in two cores (the central core and one of the outer cores) of a ~3-m-long, silica-based, 7-core multi-core fiber (MCF) with incident light of 1550 nm wavelength, and investigate the Brillouin frequency shift (BFS) and its dependence on strain and temperature. The BFSs of both the cores are ~10.92 GHz, and the strain- and temperature-dependence coefficients of the BFS in the central core are 484.8 MHz/% and 1.08 MHz/K, respectively, whereas those in the outer core are 516.9 MHz/% and 1.03 MHz/K. All of these values are not largely different from those in a …
The ability to amplify light within silicon waveguides is central to the development of high-performance silicon photonic device technologies. To this end, the large optical nonlinearities made possible through stimulated Brillouin scattering offer a promising avenue for power-efficient all-silicon amplifiers, with recent demonstrations producing several dB of net amplification. However, scaling the degree of amplification to technologically compelling levels (>10 dB), necessary for everything from filtering to small signal detection, remains an important goal. Here, we significantly enhance t…
Silicon nitride (Si3N4) has emerged as a promising material for integrated nonlinear photonics and has been used for broadband soliton microcombs and low-pulse-energy supercontinuum generation. Therefore understanding all nonlinear optical properties of Si3N4 is important. So far, only stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) has not been reported. Here we observe, for the first time, backward SBS in fully cladded Si3N4 waveguides. The Brillouin gain spectrum exhibits an unusual multi-peak structure resulting from hybridization with with high-overtone bulk acoustic resonances (HBARs) of the silic…
We demonstrate a 5-GHz-broadband tunable slow-light device based on stimulated Brillouin scattering in a standard highly-nonlinear optical fiber pumped by a noise-current-modulated laser beam. The noise modulation waveform uses an optimized pseudo-random distribution of the laser drive voltage to obtain an optimal flat-topped gain profile, which minimizes the pulse distortion and maximizes pulse delay for a given pump power. Eye-diagram and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) analysis show that this new broadband slow-light technique significantly increases the fidelity of a delayed data sequence, whi…
The ever-increasing demand for high speed and large bandwidth has made photonic systems a leading candidate for the next generation of telecommunication and radar technologies. The photonic platform enables high performance while maintaining a small footprint and provides a natural interface with fiber optics for signal transmission. However, producing sharp, narrow-band filters that are competitive with RF components has remained challenging. In this paper, we demonstrate all-silicon RF-photonic multi-pole filters with $\sim100\times$ higher spectral resolution than previously possible in sil…
In the well-known stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) process, spontaneous acoustic phonons in materials are stimulated by laser light and scatter the latter into a Stokes sideband. SBS becomes more pronounced in optical fibers and has been harnessed to amplify optical signals and even achieve lasing. Exploitation of SBS has recently surged on integrated photonics platforms as simultaneous confinement of photons and phonons in waveguides leads to drastically enhanced interaction. Instead of being optically stimulated, coherent phonons can also be electromechanically excited with very high ef…
Highly selective and reconfigurable microwave filters are of great importance in radio-frequency signal processing. Microwave photonic (MWP) filters are of particular interest, as they offer flexible reconfiguration and an order of magnitude higher frequency tuning range than electronic filters. However, all MWP filters to date have been limited by trade-offs between key parameters such as tuning range, resolution, and suppression. This problem is exacerbated in the case of integrated MWP filters, blocking the path to compact, high performance filters. Here we show the first chip-based MWP ban…
The demand for high-performance chip-scale lasers has driven rapid growth in integrated photonics. The creation of such low-noise laser sources is critical for emerging on-chip applications, ranging from coherent optical communications, photonic microwave oscillators remote sensing and optical rotational sensors. While Brillouin lasers are a promising solution to these challenges, new strategies are needed to create robust, compact, low power and low cost Brillouin laser technologies through wafer-scale integration. To date, chip-scale Brillouin lasers have remained elusive due to the difficul…
Using only electro-optic modulators, we generate a 41-line 10-GHz Gaussian-shaped optical frequency comb. We use this comb to demonstrate apodized microwave photonic filters with greater than 43-dB sidelobe suppression without the need for a pulse shaper.
Photonic integration, advanced functionality, reconfigurability, and high RF performance are key features in integrated microwave photonic systems that are still difficult to achieve simultaneously. In this work, we demonstrate an integrated microwave photonic circuit that can be reconfigured for two distinct RF functions, namely, a tunable notch filter and a phase shifter. We achieved $>$50dB high-extinction notch filtering over 6-16 GHz and 2$π$ continuously tunable phase shifting over 12-20 GHz frequencies. At the same time, we implemented an on-chip linearization technique to achieve a spu…
Achieving nonreciprocal light propagation in photonic circuits is essential to control signal crosstalk and optical back-scatter. However, realizing high-fidelity nonreciprocity in low-loss integrated photonic systems remains challenging. In this paper, we experimentally demonstrate a device concept based on nonlocal acousto-optic light scattering to produce nonreciprocal single-sideband modulation and mode conversion in an integrated silicon photonic platform. In this process, a traveling-wave acoustic phonon driven via optical forces in a silicon waveguide is used to modulate light in a spat…
A photonic-assisted multiple radio frequency (RF) measurement approach based on stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) and frequency-to-time mapping with high accuracy and high-frequency resolution is reported. A two-tone signal is single-sideband (SSB) modulated on an optical carrier via a dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator to construct one SBS gain and two SBS losses for SBS gain bandwidth reduction. The unknown RF signal is also SSB modulated on a carrier that has been modulated by a sweep signal, thus the unknown RF signal is converted to a sweep optical signal along with the sweep optica…
We frequency stabilize the output of a miniature stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) laser to rubidium atoms in a microfabricated cell to realize a laser system with frequency stability at the $10^{-11}$ level over seven decades in averaging time. In addition, our system has the advantages of robustness, low cost and the potential for integration that would lead to still further miniaturization. The SBS laser operating at 1560 nm exhibits a spectral linewidth of 820 Hz, but its frequency drifts over a few MHz on the 1 hour timescale. By locking the second harmonic of the SBS laser to the Rb …
Optical whispering-gallery microresonators are useful tools in microphotonics, and nonlinear optics at very low threshold powers. Here, we present details about the fabrication of ultra-high-Q whispering-gallery-mode resonators made by CO2-laser lathe machining of fused-quartz rods. The resonators can be fabricated in less than one minute and the obtained optical quality factors exceed Q = 10^9. Demonstrated resonator diameters are in the range between 170 μm and 8 mm (free spectral ranges between 390 GHz and 8 GHz). Using these microresonators, a variety of optical nonlinearities are observed…
Narrow linewidth visible light lasers are critical for atomic, molecular and optical (AMO) applications including atomic clocks, quantum computing, atomic and molecular spectroscopy, and sensing. Historically, such lasers are implemented at the tabletop scale, using semiconductor lasers stabilized to large optical reference cavities. Photonic integration of high spectral-purity visible light sources will enable experiments to increase in complexity and scale. Stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) is a promising approach to realize highly coherent on-chip visible light laser emission. While pro…
We investigate slow-light via stimulated Brillouin scattering in a room temperature optical fiber that is pumped by a spectrally broadened laser. Broadening the spectrum of the pump field increases the linewidth $Δω_p$ of the Stokes amplifying resonance, thereby increasing the slow-light bandwidth. One physical bandwidth limitation occurs when the linewidth becomes several times larger than the Brillouin frequency shift $Ω_B$ so that the anti-Stokes absorbing resonance cancels out substantially the Stokes amplifying resonance and hence the slow-light effect. We find that partial overlap of the…
Controlling the vibrations in solids is crucial to tailor their mechanical properties and their interaction with light. Thermal vibrations represent a source of noise and dephasing for many physical processes at the quantum level. One strategy to avoid these vibrations is to structure a solid such that it possesses a phononic stop band, i.e., a frequency range over which there are no available mechanical modes. Here, we demonstrate the complete absence of mechanical vibrations at room temperature over a broad spectral window, with a 5.3 GHz wide band gap centered at 8.4 GHz in a patterned sili…
A photonics-enabled wavelet-like transform system, characterized by multi-resolution time-frequency analysis, is proposed based on a typical stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) pump-probe setup using an optical nonlinear frequency-sweep signal. In the pump path, a continuous-wave optical signal is injected into an SBS medium to generate an SBS gain. In the probe path, a periodic nonlinear frequency-sweep optical signal with a time-varying chirp rate is generated, which is then modulated at a Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM) by the electrical signal under test (SUT). The optical signal from the M…
Narrow-band filtering of light is widely used in optical spectroscopy. Atomic filters, which rely on the Faraday effect, allow for GHz-wide transmission spectra, which are intrinsically matched to an atomic transition. We present an experimental realization and a theoretical study of a Faraday anomalous dispersion optical filter (FADOF) based on cesium and its D$_1$-line-transition ($6^2S_{1/2}\rightarrow6^2P_{1/2}$) around 894nm. We also present the prospects and visions for combining this filter with the single photon emission of a single quantum dot (QD), which matches with the atomic trans…
This letter proposes a new spoof surface plasmon transmission line (SSP-TL) using capacitor loading techniques. This new SSP-TL features flexible and reconfigurable dispersion control and highly selective filtering performance without resorting to configuration change. Moreover, it requires much smaller line width than the conventional SSP-TLs for achieving a extremely slow wave (or a highly confined field), which is quite useful for a compact system. To illustrate the design principle, several examples are designed within the frequency range of 2-8 GHz. Both numerical and experimental results…
We explored the issues related to the resolution and the modulation extinction when filtering the spectrum of a UV femtosecond laser with a standard ultrashort pulse shaper. We have learned that a higher pulse shaping resolution often requires a larger working beam size or a higher density grating for greater dispersion. However, these approaches also introduce more optical errors and degrade the extinction. In this work, we examined specifics of each component to determine the best configuration of our spectral filtering setup. As a proof-of-concept demonstration, we utilized elements availab…
