We propose a phylogenetic approach (PA) as a novel and robust tool to detect galaxy populations (GPs) based on their chemical composition. The branches of the tree are interpreted as different GPs and the length between nodes as the internal chemical variation along a branch. We apply the PA using 30 abundance indices from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey to 475 galaxies in the Coma Cluster and 438 galaxies in the field. We find that a dense environment, such as Coma, shows several GPs, which indicates that the environment is promoting galaxy evolution. Each population shares common properties that can be identified in colour magnitude space, in addition to minor structures inside the red sequence. The field is more homogeneous, presenting one main GP. We also apply a principal component analysis (PCA) to both samples, and find that the PCA does not have the same power in identifying GPs.
We present Hubble Space Telescope (HST) observations of the low surface brightness (SB) galaxy Coma P. This system was first discovered in the Arecibo Legacy Fast ALFA HI survey and was cataloged as an (almost) dark galaxy because it did not exhibit any obvious optical counterpart in the available survey data (e.g., Sloan Digital Sky Survey). Subsequent WIYN pODI imaging revealed an ultra-low SB stellar component located at the center of the HI detection. We use the HST images to produce a deep color-magnitude diagram (CMD) of the resolved stellar population present in Coma P. We clearly detec…
If the extremely low surface brightness galaxy Coma P lies at $5.5\pm0.3$ Mpc as recently proposed then it would have an extraordinarily deviant peculiar velocity of $\sim900$ km $\mathrm{s^{-1}}$ at a location where differential velocities between galaxies are low. We have accessed the images from the HST archives used to derive the literature distance from the magnitude of the tip of the red giant branch. Our analysis gives the distance to be $10.9\pm1.0$ Mpc. At this location the galaxy lies within the infall region of the Virgo Cluster, such that its still considerable peculiar velocity of…
We resolve a significant fraction of globular clusters (GCs) in NGC 4921, the brightest spiral galaxy in Coma. Also we find a number of extended bright star clusters (star complexes) in the spur region of the arms. The latter are much brighter and bluer than those in the normal star-forming region, being as massive as 3x10^5 M_odot. The color distribution of the GCs in this galaxy is found to be bimodal. The turnover magnitudes of the luminosity functions (LF) of the blue (metal-poor) GCs (0.70<(V-I)<1.05) in the halo are estimated to be V(max) =27.11+-0.09 mag and I(max)=26.21+-0.11 mag. We o…
We present new deep images of the Coma Cluster from the ESA Herschel Space Observatory at wavelengths of 70, 100 and 160 microns, covering an area of 1.75 x 1.0 square degrees encompassing the core and southwest infall region. Our data display an excess of sources at flux densities above 100 mJy compared to blank-field surveys, as expected. We use extensive optical spectroscopy of this region to identify cluster members and hence produce cluster luminosity functions in all three photometric bands. We compare our results to the local field galaxy luminosity function, and the luminosity function…
The Coma cluster is the nearest massive ($M \gtrsim 10^{15}\,\mathrm{M_\odot}$) galaxy cluster, making it an excellent laboratory to probe the influence of the cluster environment on galaxy star formation. Here, we present a sample of 41 galaxies with disturbed morphologies consistent with ram pressure stripping. These galaxies are identified visually using high-quality, multi-band imaging from the Canada-France-Hawaii telescope covering ~9 $\mathrm{deg^2}$ of the Coma cluster. These "stripping candidates" are clear outliers in common quantitative morphological measures, such as concentration-…
We present a homogeneous catalog of 275 large (effective radius $\gtrsim$ 5.3 arcsec) ultra-diffuse galaxy (UDG) candidates lying within an $\approx$ 290 square degree region surrounding the Coma cluster. The catalog results from our automated postprocessing of data from the Legacy Surveys, a three-band imaging survey covering 14,000 square degrees of the extragalactic sky. We describe a pipeline that identifies UDGs and provides their basic parameters. The survey is as complete in these large UDGs as previously published UDG surveys of the central region of the Coma cluster. We conclude that …
We conduct the first self-consistent numerical simulations of a recently discovered population of 47 large, faint (ultra-diffuse) galaxies, speculated to lie in the Coma cluster. With structural properties consistent with very large low surface brightness systems (i.e. $μ$(g,0)$<24$ mag arcsec$^{\rm -2}$, r$_{\rm eff}$ comparable to the Galaxy), the red colour ($\langle$g-r$\rangle$$\sim$0.8) and assumed low metallicity of these objects compels us to consider a scenario in which these are underdeveloped galaxies whose early ($z$$\simeq$2) accretion to an overdense environment quenched further …
We present new high-resolution HI spectral line imaging of Coma P, the brightest HI source in the system HI 1232$+$20. This extremely low surface brightness galaxy was first identified in the ALFALFA survey as an "(Almost) Dark" object: a clearly extragalactic HI source with no obvious optical counterpart in existing optical survey data (although faint ultraviolet emission was detected in archival GALEX imaging). Using a combination of data from the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope and the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array, we investigate the HI morphology and kinematics at a variety of phys…
Based on an extensive redshift survey for galaxy cluster Abell 2029 and Coma, we measure the luminosity functions (LFs), stellar mass functions (SMFs) for the entire cluster member galaxies. Most importantly, we measure the velocity dispersion functions (VDFs) for quiescent members. The MMT/Hectospec redshift survey for galaxies in A2029 identifies 982 spectroscopic members; for 838 members we derive the central velocity dispersion from the spectroscopy. Coma is the only other cluster surveyed as densely. The LFs, SMFs and VDFs for A2029 and Coma are essentially identical. The SMFs of the clus…
In this paper we present the structural properties and morphology of galaxies in the central region of the Coma Cluster brighter than $19.5^m$ in the $F814W$ band. from the HST/ACS Coma Cluster Treasury Survey. Using mainly spectroscopic redshifts, we find 132 members from our sample of 219 galaxies. In our sample of 132 members, we find 51 non-dwarfs and 81 dwarfs and amongst our 32 non-members, we find 4 dwarfs and 28 non dwarfs. We do not have redshifts for the remaining 55 galaxies. We present bulge-disc decomposition of the sample using GALFIT and obtain parameters for our sample. Using v…
[abridged] We explore the diversity of internal galaxy structures in the Coma cluster across a wide range of luminosities ($-17$\,$>$\,$M_g$\,$>$\,$-22$) and cluster-centric radii ($0$\,$<$\,$r_{\rm{cluster}}$\,$<$\,1.3 $r_{200}$) through analysis of deep Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope $i$ band imaging. We present 2D multi-component decomposition via GALFIT, encompassing a wide range of candidate model morphologies with up to three photometric components. Particular focus is placed on early-type galaxies with outer discs (i.e. S0s), and deviations from simple (`unbroken') exponential discs. Ri…
Remarkable dust extinction features in the deep HST V and I images of the face-on Coma cluster spiral galaxy NGC 4921 show in unprecedented ways how ram pressure strips the ISM from the disk of a spiral galaxy. New VLA HI maps show a truncated and highly asymmetric HI disk with a compressed HI distribution in the NW, providing evidence for ram pressure acting from the NW. Where the HI distribution is truncated in the NW region, HST images show a well-defined, continuous front of dust that extends over 90 degrees and 20 kpc. This dust front separates the dusty from dust-free regions of the gala…
We describe a far infrared survey of the Coma cluster and the galaxy filament it resides within. Our survey covers an area of $\sim$150 deg$^2$ observed by $Herschel$ H-ATLAS in five bands at 100, 160, 250, 350 and 500$μ$m. The SDSS spectroscopic survey ($m_{r} \le 17.8)$ is used to define an area (within the Virial radius) and redshift selected ($4268 < v < 9700$ km s$^{-1}$) sample of 744 Coma cluster galaxies - the Coma Cluster Catalogue (CCC). For comparison we also define a sample of 951 galaxies in the connecting filament - the Coma Filament Catalogue (CFC). The optical positions and par…
We investigate the effects of ram pressure on the molecular ISM in the disk of the Coma cluster galaxy NGC 4921, via high resolution CO observations. We present 6" resolution CARMA CO(1-0) observations of the full disk, and 0.4" resolution ALMA CO(2-1) observations of the leading quadrant, where ram pressure is strongest. We find evidence for compression of the dense interstellar medium (ISM) on the leading side, spatially correlated with intense star formation activity in this zone. We also detect molecular gas along kiloparsec-scale filaments of dust extending into the otherwise gas stripped…
We have discovered large amounts of molecular gas, as traced by CO emission, in the ram pressure stripped gas tail of the Coma cluster galaxy D100 (GMP 2910), out to large distances of about 50 kpc. D100 has a 60 kpc long, strikingly narrow tail which is bright in X-rays and Hα. Our observations with the IRAM 30m telescope reveal in total ~ 10^9 M_sun of H_2 (assuming the standard CO-to-H_2 conversion) in several regions along the tail, thus indicating that molecular gas may dominate its mass. Along the tail we measure a smooth gradient in the radial velocity of the CO emission that is offset …
We use deep high resolution \textit{HST/ACS} imaging of two fields in the core of the Coma cluster to investigate the occurrence of nuclear star clusters (NSCs) in quiescent dwarf galaxies as faint as $M_{I} = -10$ mag. We employ a hierarchical Bayesian logistic regression framework to model the faint end of the nucleation fraction ($f_{n}$) as a function of both galaxy luminosity and environment. We find that $f_n$ is remarkably high in Coma: at $M_{I} \approx -13$ mag half of the cluster dwarfs still host prominent NSCs. Comparison with dwarf systems in nearby clusters and groups shows that,…
The Coma supercluster (100 Mpc) offers an unprecedented contiguous range of environments in the nearby Universe. In this paper we present a catalogue of spectroscopically confirmed galaxies in the Coma supercluster detected in the ultraviolet (UV) wavebands. We use the arsenal of UV and optical data for galaxies in the Coma supercluster covering ~ 500 square degrees on the sky to study their photometric and spectroscopic properties as a function of environment at various scales. We identify the different components of the cosmic-web: large-scale filaments and voids using Discrete Persistent St…
Studying the interaction between AGN jets and lobes and their surrounding environment is important in order to understand how they transfer energy to their environment as well as determining the intrinsic physical properties of the sources themselves. This paper presents broadband VLA polarization and Faraday rotation observations of the radio galaxy Coma A (3C 277.3) from 1 to 4 GHz, including archival VLA observations at 4.9 and 15 GHz. Through broadband polarization model-fitting, we find that an external Faraday screen with a turbulent magnetic field provides an appropriate description to …
We present the blind Westerbork Coma Survey probing the HI content of the Coma galaxy cluster with the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope. The survey covers the inner $\sim$ 1 Mpc around the cluster centre, extending out to 1.5 Mpc towards the south-western NGC 4839 group. The survey probes the atomic gas in the entire Coma volume down to a sensitivity of $\sim$ 10$^{19}$ cm$^{-2}$ and 10$^8$ M$_{\odot}$. Combining automated source finding with source extraction at optical redshifts and visual verification, we obtained 40 HI detections of which 24 are new. Over half of the sample displays pe…
We present B, V, I time-series photometry of the Coma Berenices dwarf spheroidal galaxy, a faint Milky Way satellite, recently discovered by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We have obtained V, B-V and V, V-I color-magnitude diagrams that reach V~23.0-23.2 mag showing the galaxy turnoff at V~21.7 mag, and have performed the first study of the variable star population of this new Milky Way companion. Two RR Lyrae stars (a fundamental-mode -RRab- and a first overtone -RRc- pulsator) and a short period variable with period P=0.12468 days were identified in the galaxy. The RRab star has a rather long…
We examine ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs) and their relation to non-UDGs in mass-radius-luminosity space. We begin by publishing Keck/KCWI spectroscopy for the Coma cluster UDG Y358, for which we measure both a recessional velocity and velocity dispersion. Our recessional velocity confirms association with the Coma cluster and Y358's status as a UDG. From our velocity dispersion (19 $\pm$ 3 km s$^{-1}$) we calculate a dynamical mass within the half-light radius which provides evidence for a core in Y358's dark matter halo. We compare this dynamical mass, along with those for globular cluster (G…
We present new HST F275W, F475W, and F814W imaging of the region of the Coma cluster around D100, a spiral galaxy with a remarkably long and narrow ($60 \times 1.5$ kpc) ram pressure stripped gas tail. We find blue sources coincident with the H$α$ tail, which we identify as young stars formed in the tail. We also determine they are likely to be unbound stellar complexes with sizes of $\sim$ $50-100$ pc, likely to disperse as they age. From a comparison of the colors and magnitudes of the young stellar complexes with simple stellar population models, we find ages ranging from $\sim$ $1-50$ Myr,…
Many ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs) have been discovered in the Coma cluster, and there is evidence that some, notably Dragonfly 44, have Milky Way-like dynamical masses despite dwarf-like stellar masses. We used X-ray, UV, and optical data to investigate the star formation and nuclear activity in the Coma UDGs, and we obtained deep UV and X-ray data (Swift and XMM-Newton) for Dragonfly 44 to search for low-level star formation, hot circumgalactic gas, and the integrated emission from X-ray binaries. Among the Coma UDGs, we find UV luminosities consistent with quiescence but NUV$-r$ colors indi…
Intracluster stellar populations are a natural result of tidal interactions in galaxy clusters. Measuring these populations is difficult, but important for understanding the assembly of the most massive galaxies. The Coma cluster is one of the nearest truly massive galaxy clusters, and is host to a correspondingly large system of globular clusters (GCs). We use imaging from the HST/ACS Coma Cluster Survey to present the first definitive detection of a large population of intracluster GCs (IGCs) that fills the Coma cluster core and is not associated with individual galaxies. The GC surface dens…

We use deep $HST$ WFC3/IR imaging to study the Initial Mass Function (IMF) of the ultra faint dwarf galaxy Coma Berenices (Com Ber). Our observations reach the lowest stellar mass ever probed in a resolved galaxy, with 50\% completeness at $\sim 0.17$ M$_{\odot}$. Unresolved background galaxies however limit our purity below $\sim 0.23$ M$_{\odot}$. If modeled with a single power law, we find that the IMF slope is $-1.45^{+0.29}_{-0.3}$ (68\% credible intervals), compared to a Milky Way value of $-2.3$. For a broken power law, we obtain a low-mass slope of $-1.18_{-0.33}^{+0.49}$, a high-mass …
We present a catalogue of low surface brightness (LSB) galaxies in the Coma cluster obtained from deep Subaru/Suprime-Cam V and R-band imaging data within a region of $\sim$4 deg$^2$. We increase the number of LSB galaxies presented in Yagi et al. (2016) by a factor of $\sim$3 and report the discovery of 29 new ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs). We compile the largest sample of ultra-diffuse galaxies with colours and structural parameters in the Coma cluster. While most UDGs lie along the red-sequence relation of the colour-magnitude diagram, $\sim$5per cent are outside (bluer or redder) the red-s…

In order to study stellar populations and galaxy structures at intermediate and high redshift (z=0.2-2.0) and link these properties to those of low redshift galaxies, there is a need for well-defined local reference samples. Especially for galaxies in massive clusters, such samples are often limited to the Coma cluster galaxies. We present consistently calibrated velocity dispersions and absorption line indices for galaxies in the central 2 R500 x 2 R500 of four massive clusters at z<0.1: Abell 426/Perseus, Abell 1656/Coma, Abell 2029, and Abell 2142. The measurements are based on data from Ge…
We present a source catalog from deep 26 ks GALEX observations of the Coma cluster in the far-UV (FUV; 1530 A) and near-UV (NUV; 2310 A) wavebands. The observed field is centered 0.9 deg (1.6 Mpc) south-west of the Coma core, and has full optical photometric coverage with SDSS. The catalog consists of 9700 galaxies with GALEX and SDSS photometry, including 242 spectroscopically-confirmed Coma member galaxies that range from giant spirals and elliptical galaxies to dwarf irregular and early-type galaxies. The full multi-wavelength catalog (cluster plus background galaxies) is ~80% complete to N…
We derived the luminosity function (LF) of dwarf galaxies in the Coma Cluster down to M_R=-10 at three fields located at the center, intermediate, and outskirt. The LF (-19<M_R<-10) shows no significant differences among the three fields. It shows a clear dip at M_R\sim-13, and is composed of two distinct components of different slopes; the bright component with -19<M_R<-13 has a flatter slope than the faint component with -13<M_R<-10 which has a steep slope. The bright component (-19<M_R<-13) consists of mostly red extended galaxies including few blue galaxies whose colors are typical of late…

The tight radial acceleration relation (RAR) obeyed by rotationally supported disk galaxies is one of the most successful a priori predictions of the modified Newtonian dynamics (MOND) paradigm on galaxy scales. Another important consequence of MOND as a classical modification of gravity is that the strong equivalence principle (SEP) -- which requires the dynamics of a small, free-falling, self-gravitating system not to depend on the external gravitational field in which it is embedded -- should be broken. Multiple tentative detections of this so-called external field effect (EFE) of MOND have…
We present a detailed census of galaxies in and around PC217.96+32.3, a spectroscopically confirmed Coma analog at z=3.78. Diverse galaxy types identified in the field include Lya emitters (LAEs), massive star-forming galaxies, and ultra-massive galaxies (log (Mstar/Msun)>= 11) which may have already halted their star formation. The sky distribution of the star-forming galaxies suggests the presence of a significant overdensity (delta_g=8+/-2), which is spatially offset from the previously confirmed members by 3-4 Mpc to the west. Candidate quiescent and post-starburst galaxies are also found …
We use Keck/DEIMOS spectroscopy to confirm the cluster membership of 16 ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs) in the Coma cluster, bringing the total number of spectroscopically con- firmed UDGs to 24. We also identify a new cluster background UDG. In this pilot study of Coma UDGs in velocity phase-space, we find evidence that most present-day Coma UDGs have a recent infall epoch while a few may be ancient infalls. These recent infall UDGs have higher absolute relative line-of-sight velocities, bluer optical colors, and are smaller in size, unlike the ancient infalls. The kinematics of the spectroscop…
We have used deep GALEX observations at the infall region of the Coma cluster to measure the faintest UV luminosity functions (LFs) presented for a rich galaxy cluster thus far. The Coma UV LFs are measured to M_UV = -10.5 in the GALEX FUV and NUV bands, or 3.5 mag fainter than previous studies, and reach the dwarf early-type galaxy population in Coma for the first time. The Schechter faint-end slopes (alpha = -1.39 in both GALEX bands) are shallower than reported in previous Coma UV LF studies owing to a flatter LF at faint magnitudes. A Gaussian-plus-Schechter model provides a slightly bette…
We report the discovery with Chandra of X-ray-emitting gas associated with the jet-cloud interaction in the radio galaxy 3C 277.3 (Coma A), a source that falls in the most important power range for radio-mode feedback in the Universe. This hot gas, heated by the jet, dominates the mass of the cloud which is responsible for an extreme projected deflection of the kpc-scale radio jet. Highly absorbed X-ray emission from the nucleus of 3C 277.3 confirms that the jet lies close to the plane of the sky and so has a large intrinsic deflection. We detect group gas on the scale of the radio lobes, and …
We demonstrate a novel technique for calibrating the energy scale of the XMM EPIC-pn detector, which allows us to measure bulk flows in the intracluster medium (ICM) of the Perseus and Coma clusters. The procedure uses the instrumental lines present in all observations, in particular, Cu-Ka. By studying their spatial and temporal variations, in addition to incorporating calibration observations, we refined the absolute energy scale to better than 150 km/s at the Fe-K line, a large improvement over the nominal accuracy of 550 km/s. We then mapped the bulk motions over much of the central 1200 a…
Context. The chemical tagging technique is a promising approach to reconstruct the history of the Galaxy by only using stellar chemical abundances. Different studies have undertaken this analysis and they raised several challenges. Aims. Using a sample of open clusters stars, we wish to address two issues: minimize chemical abundance differences which origin is linked to the evolutionary stage of the stars and not their original composition; evaluate a phylogenetic approach to group stars based on their chemical composition. Methods. We derived differential chemical abundances for 207 stars (b…
We study the stellar population far into the halo of one of the two brightest galaxies in the Coma cluster, NGC 4889, based on deep medium resolution spectroscopy with FOCAS at the Subaru 8.2m telescope. We fit single stellar population models to the measured line-strength (Lick) indices (Hbeta, Mgb, [MgFe]' and <Fe>). Combining with literature data, we construct radial profiles of metallicity, [alpha/Fe] element abundance ratio and age for NGC 4889, from the center out to ~60 kpc (~4Re). We find evidence for different chemical and star formation histories for stars inside and outside 1.2Re = …
The spatial and kinematic distribution of warm gas in and around the Coma Cluster is presented through observations of Lyman-alpha absorbers using background QSOs. Updates to the Lyman-alpha absorber distribution found in Yoon et al. (2012) for the Virgo Cluster are also presented. At 0.2-2.0 R_vir of Coma we identify 14 Lyman-alpha absorbers (N_HI = 10^{12.8-15.9} cm^-2) towards 5 sightlines and no Lyman-alpha absorbers along 3 sightlines within 3\sigmav_coma. For both Coma and Virgo, most Lyman-alpha absorbers are found outside the virial radius or beyond 1\sigmav consistent with them largel…
We study a sample of 148 early-type galaxies in the Coma cluster using SDSS photometry and spectra, and calibrate our results using detailed dynamical models for a subset of these galaxies, to create a precise benchmark for dynamical scaling relations in high-density environments. For these galaxies, we successfully measured global galaxy properties, modeled stellar populations, and created dynamical models, and support the results using detailed dynamical models of 16 galaxies, including the two most massive cluster galaxies, using data taken with the SAURON IFU. By design, the study provides…
The Cosmic Web is a complex network of filaments, walls and voids that represent the largest structures in the Universe. In this network, which is the direct result of structure formation, galaxy clusters occupy central positions as the nodes, connected through the filaments. In this work, we investigate the position in the Cosmic Web of one of the most known and best studied clusters of galaxies, the Coma cluster. We make use of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7 (SDSS DR7) Main Galaxy Sample and of the Discrete Persistent Structure Extractor (DisPerSE) to detect large scale filament…
We present deep CFHT/MegaCam photometry of the ultra-faint Milky Way satellite galaxies Coma Berenices (ComBer) and Ursa Major II (UMa II). These data extend to r~25, corresponding to three magnitudes below the main sequence turn-offs in these galaxies. We robustly calculate a total luminosity of M_V=-3.8 +/- 0.6 for ComBer and M_V=-3.9 +/- 0.5 for UMa II, in agreement with previous results. ComBer shows a fairly regular morphology with no signs of active tidal stripping down to a surface brightness limit of 32.4 magarcsec^-2. Using a maximum likelihood analysis, we calculate the half-light ra…
We present NLTE abundances and atmospheric parameters for three metal-poor stars ([Fe/H]<-2) in Coma Berenices ultra-faint dwarf galaxy (UFD). The derived results are based on new photometric observations obtained with the 2.5-m telescope of the SAI MSU Caucasian observatory and spectra from the archive of the 10-m Keck telescope. Effective temperatures were determined from V-I, V-K, V-J colours. For each star, Teffs derived from different colours agree within 20K. Surface gravities (log g) were calculated using a relation between log g, MV, BC, distance, Teff, and mass, adopted as 0.8MSun. Th…
We take a close look at the galaxies in the Coma Supercluster and assess the role of the environment (in the form of cluster, group and supercluster filament) in their evolution, in particular examining the role of groups. We characterise the groups according to intrinsic properties such as richness and halo mass, as well as their position in the supercluster and proximity to the two rich clusters, Abell 1656 (Coma) and Abell 1367. We devise a new way of characterising the local environment using a kernel density estimator. We find that apart from the dominant effects of the galaxy mass, the e…
