Topological superconductors represent one of the key hosts of Majorana-based topological quantum computing. Typical scenarios for one-dimensional topological superconductivity assume a broken gauge symmetry associated to a superconducting state. However, no interacting one-dimensional many-body system is known to spontaneously break gauge symmetries. Here, we show that zero modes emerge in a many-body system without gauge symmetry breaking and in the absence of superconducting order. In particular, we demonstrate that Majorana zero modes of the symmetry-broken superconducting state are continuously connected to these zero-mode excitations, demonstrating that zero-bias anomalies may emerge in the absence of gauge symmetry breaking. We demonstrate that these many-body zero modes share the robustness features of the Majorana zero modes of symmetry-broken topological superconductors. We introduce a bosonization formalism to analyze these excitations and show that a ground state analogous to a topological superconducting state can be analytically found in a certain limit. Our results demonstrate that robust Majorana-like zero modes may appear in a many-body systems without gauge symmetry breaking, thus introducing a family of protected excitations with no single-particle analogs.
The Majorana lattice gauge theory purely composed of Majorana fermions on square lattice is studied throughly. The ground state is obtained exactly and exhibits the coexistence of symmetry breaking and topological order. The $Z_2$ symmetry breaking of matter fields leads to the intertwined antiferromagnetic spin order and $η$-pairing order. The topological order is reflected in the $Z_2$ quantum spin liquid ground state of gauge fields. The Majorana lattice gauge theory, alternatively can be viewed as interacting Majorana fermion model, is possibly realized on a Majorana-zero-mode lattice.
We study the boundary Majorana modes for the single component p-wave weak topological superconductors or superfluids, which form zero energy flat bands protected by time-reversal symmetry in the orbital channel. However, due to the divergence of density of states, the band flatness of the edge Majorana modes is unstable under spontaneously generated spatial variations of Cooper pairing phases. Staggered current loops appear near the boundary and thus time-reversal symmetry is spontaneously broken in the orbital channel. This effect can appear in both condensed matter and ultra-cold atom system…
We carry out a theoretical analysis of a prototypical Majorana system, which demonstrates the existence of a Majorana-mediated many-body state and an associated intermediate low-energy fixed point. Starting from two Majorana bound states, hosted by a Coulomb-blockaded topological superconductor and each coupled to a separate lead, we derive an effective low-energy Hamiltonian, which displays a Kondo-like character. However, in contrast to the Kondo model which tends to a strong- or weak-coupling limit under renormalization, we show that this effective Hamiltonian scales to an intermediate fixe…
Recently, there has been substantial progress in methods of identifying local integrals of motion in interacting integrable models or in systems with many-body localization. We show that one of these approaches can be utilized for constructing local, conserved, Majorana fermions in systems with an arbitrary many-body interaction. As a test case, we first investigate a non-interacting Kitaev model and demonstrate that this approach perfectly reproduces the standard results. Then, we discuss how the many-body interactions influence the spatial structure and the lifetime of the Majorana modes. Fi…
Realizing Majorana modes in topological superconductors, i.e., the condensed-matter counterpart of Majorana fermions in particle physics, may lead to a major advance in the field of topologically-protected quantum computation. Here, we introduce one-dimensional, counterpropagating, and dispersive Majorana modes as bulk excitations of a periodic chain of partially-overlapping, zero-dimensional Majorana modes in proximitized nanowires via periodically-modulated fields. This system realizes centrally-extended quantum-mechanical supersymmetry with spontaneous partial supersymmetry breaking. The ma…
We study a tight-binding model of interacting Majorana (Hermitian) modes on a square lattice. The model may have an experimental realization in a superconducting-film--topological-insulator heterostructure in a magnetic field. We find a rich phase diagram, as a function of interaction strength, including a superfluid phase with spontaneous breaking of an emergent $U(1)$ symmetry, separated by a supersymmetric transition from a gapless normal phase.
Applying a microscopic model, we study theoretically the quasiparticle excitation of a twodimensional topological insulator (TI) being in proximity to a high-Tc superconductor. In the momentum space, the proximity induced pairing term in the TI layer includes both the singlet channel and triplet channel, leading to the C4 rotational symmetry breaking of the energy bands and the quasiparticle spectra. For a cylinder geometry, the zero energy edge states may appear but they are localized at the upper boundary. For the finite-size system with open boundaries, the zero energy states at the upper b…
$\text{UTe}_2$ is a leading candidate for chiral p-wave superconductivity, and for hosting exotic Majorana fermion quasiparticles. Motivated by recent STM experiments in this system, we study particle-hole symmetry breaking in chiral p-wave superconductors. We compute the local density of states from Majorana fermion surface states in the presence of Rashba surface spin-orbit coupling, which is expected to be sizeable in heavy-fermion materials like UTe$_2$. We show that time-reversal and surface reflection symmetry breaking lead to a natural pairing tendency towards a triplet pair density wav…
We study a vortex chain in a thin film of a topological insulator with proximity-induced superconductivity---a promising platform to realize Majorana zero modes (MZMs)---by modeling it as a two-leg Majorana ladder. While each pair of MZMs hybridizes through vortex tunneling, we hereby show that MZMs can be stabilized on the ends of the ladder with the presence of tilted external magnetic field and four-Majorana interaction. Furthermore, a fruitful phase diagram is obtained by controlling the direction of magnetic field and the thickness of the sample. We reveal many-body Majorana states and in…
The issue on the effect of interactions in topological states concerns not only interacting topological phases but also novel symmetry-breaking phases and phase transitions. Here we study the interaction effect on Majorana zero modes (MZMs) bound to a square vortex lattice in two-dimensional (2D) topological superconductors. Under the neutrality condition, where single-body hybridization between MZMs is prohibited by an emergent symmetry, a minimal square-lattice model for MZMs can be faithfully mapped to a quantum spin model, which has no sign problem in the world-line quantum Monte Carlo sim…
We study the combined effects of spin-orbit interaction, magnetic field, and Coulomb charging on the Josephson current-phase relation, I(φ), for a multi-level quantum dot tunnel-contacted by two conventional s-wave superconductors with phase difference φ. A general model is formulated and analyzed in the cotunneling regime (weak tunnel coupling) and in the deep subgap limit, fully taking into account interaction effects. We determine the conditions for observing a finite anomalous supercurrent I_a=I(φ=0). For a two-level dot with spin-orbit coupling and arbitrarily weak Zeeman field B, we find…
Twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) realizes a highly tunable, strongly interacting system featuring superconductivity and various correlated insulating states. We establish gate-defined wires in TBG with proximity-induced spin-orbit coupling as $(i)$ a tool for revealing the nature of correlated insulators and $(ii)$ a platform for Majorana-based topological qubits. In particular, we show that the band structure of a gate-defined wire immersed in an `inter-valley coherent' correlated insulator inherits electrically detectable fingerprints of symmetry breaking native to the latter. Surrounding the …
We identify time-reversal symmetry breaking mixed-parity superconducting states that feature eight Majorana corner modes in properly cleaved three-dimensional cubic crystals. Namely, when an odd-parity isotropic $p$-wave pairing coexists with cubic symmetry preserving even-parity octupolar $d_{x^2-y^2}+i d_{3z^2-r^2}$ pairing, the gapless surface Majorana modes of the former get localized at the eight corners, thus yielding an \emph{intrinsic} third-order topological superconductor (TOTSC). A cousin $d_{xy}+id_{3z^2-r^2}$ pairing also accommodating eight corner Majorana modes, by virtue of bre…
We prove a topological criterion for the existence of zero-energy Majorana bound-state on a disclination, a rotation symmetry breaking point defect, in 4-fold symmetric topological crystalline superconductors (TCS). We first establish a complete topological classification of TCS using the Chern invariant and three integral rotation invariants. By analytically and numerically studying disclinations, we algebraically deduce a Z_2-index that identifies the parity of the number of Majorana zero-modes at a disclination. Surprisingly, we also find weakly-protected Majorana fermions bound at the corn…
Motivated by the recent experiment indicating that superconductivity in the doped topological insulator Cu$_x$Bi$_2$Se$_3$ has an odd-parity pairing symmetry with rotational symmetry breaking, we study the general class of odd-parity superconductors with two-component order parameters in trigonal and hexagonal crystal systems. In the presence of strong spin-orbit interaction, we find two possible superconducting phases below $T_c$, a time-reversal-breaking (i.e., chiral) phase and an anisotropic (i.e., nematic) phase, and determine their relative energetics from the gap function in momentum sp…
We study a Majorana-carrying quantum wire, driven into a trivial phase by breaking the spatial inversion symmetry with a tilted external magnetic field. Interestingly, we predict that a supercurrent applied in the proximate superconductor is able to restore the topological phase and therefore the Majorana end-states. Using Abelian bosonization, we further confirm this result in the presence of electron-electron interactions and show a profound connection of this phenomenon to the physics of a one-dimensional doped Mott-insulator. The present results have important applications in e.g., realizi…
We investigate the conductance of an Aharonov-Bohm (AB) interferometer coupled to a quantum dot and two Majorana bound states on the edge of the topological superconductor with finite length. When the tunnel couplings between the Majorana bound states and the Aharonov-Bohm interferometer are fixed to the specific phase, the differential conductance becomes zero irrespective of all the parameters as long as the hoppings to the two Majorana fermions on the opposite side are equal. The conductance at the zero bias voltage does not change with the magnetic flux penetrating the ring for all cases. …
We study dynamics of a single qubit encoded in two pairs of Majorana modes, whereby each pair is hosted on a trijunction described by the Kitaev model extended by many-body interactions. We demonstrated that the challenging phase-gate may be efficiently implemented via braiding of partially overlapping modes. Although such qubit acquires both geometric and dynamical phases during the braiding protocol, the latter phase may be eliminated if the Majorana modes are hosted by systems with appropriate particle-hole symmetry.
Experimental signatures of Majorana zero modes in a single superconducting quantum wire with spin-orbit coupling have been reported as zero bias peaks in the tunneling spectroscopy. We study whether these zero modes can persist in an array of coupled wires, and if not, what their remnant could be. The bulk exhibits topologically distinct gapped phases and an intervening gapless phase. Even though the bulk pairing structure is topological, the interaction between Majorana zero modes and superfluid phases leads to spontaneous time-reversal symmetry breaking. Consequently, edge supercurrent loops…
Coupling Majorana qubits with other qubits is an absolute essential in storing, manipulating and transferring informations for topological quantum computing. We theoretically propose a manner to coupling Majorana qubits with solitons, another kind of topological impurities, which was first studied in the spinless Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model. We presents a NOT operation on the Majorana qubit with moving the complementary soliton through heterostructure adiabatically. Based on these two topological impurities, the operation is robust against local disorder. Furthermore, we find that the sol…
HgTe-based quantum wells (QWs) recently attracted a lot of attention for the realization of a two-dimensional topological insulator with protected helical edge states. Another class of topological systems are topological superconductors (TSCs) with Majorana edge states. In this paper, we show how proximity induced s-wave superconductivity in the bulk of HgTe-QWs and in the presence of a Zeeman field can exhibit a TSC with chiral Majorana edge states. We calculate the topological invariants and the corresponding Majorana edge states explicitly within a four-band model accounting for inversion s…
We propose a Z$_2$ index theorem for a generic topological superconductor in class D. Introducing a particle-hole symmetry breaking term depending on a parameter and regarding it as a coordinate of an extra dimension, we define the index of the zero modes and corresponding topological invariant for such an extended Hamiltonian. It is shown that these are related with the number of the zero modes of the original Hamiltonian modulo two.
Topological superconductivity has been sought for in a variety of heterostructure systems, the interest being that a material displaying such a phenomenon could prove to be the ideal platform to support Majorana fermions, which in turn could be the basis for advanced qubit technologies. Recently the high Tc family of superconductors, $FeSe_{x}Te_{1-x}$, have been shown to exhibit the property of topological superconductivity and further, evidence has been found for the presence of Majorana fermions. We have studied the interplay of topology, magnetism and superconductivity in the $FeSe_{x}Te_{…
We consider the surface states of a spherical topological insulator piecewise-terminated by superconductivity or ferromagnetism over various regions of the spherical surface. Such terminations gap the surface states by breaking U(1) particle-number symmetry or time-reversal symmetry, respectively. Interfaces and trijunctions between differently terminated surface regions can host propagating and bound Majorana modes, and the finite size of the spherical system makes it easily amenable to numerical analysis via exact diagonalization of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes Hamiltonian within a truncated Hil…
We relax one of the requirements for topological quantum computation with Majorana fermions. Topological quantum computation was discussed so far as manipulation of the wave function within degenerate many body ground state. The simplest particles providing degenerate ground state, Majorana fermions, often coexist with extremely low energy excitations, so keeping the system in the ground state may be hard. We show that the topological protection extends to the excited states, as long as the Majorana fermions do not interact neither directly, nor via the excited states. This protection relies o…
We theoretically consider the ubiquitous soft gap measured in the tunneling conductance of semiconductor-superconductor hybrid structures, in which recently observed signatures of elusive Majorana bound states have created much excitement. We systematically study the effects of magnetic and non-magnetic disorder, temperature, dissipative Cooper pair breaking, and interface inhomogeneity, which could lead to a soft gap. We find that interface inhomogeneity with moderate dissipation is the only viable mechanism that is consistent with the experimental observations. Our work indicates that improv…
What distinguishes trivial from topological superluids in interacting many-body systems where the number of particles is conserved? Building on a class of integrable pairing Hamiltonians, we present a number-conserving, interacting variation of the Kitaev model, the Richardson-Gaudin-Kitaev chain, that remains exactly solvable for periodic and antiperiodic boundary conditions. Our model allows us to identify fermionic parity switches that distinctively characterize topological superconductivity in interacting many-body systems. Although the Majorana zero-modes in this model have only a power-l…
Large Hubbard U limit of the Kane-Mele model on a zigzag ribbon of honeycomb lattice near half-filling is studied via a renormalized mean-field theory. The ground state exhibits time-reversal symmetry (TRS) breaking d + i d'-wave superconductivity. At large spin-orbit coupling, the Z2 phase with non-trivial spin Chern number in the pure Kane-Mele model is persistent into the TRS broken state (called spin-Chern phase), and has two pairs of counter-propagating helical Majorana modes at the edges. As the spin-orbit coupling is reduced, the system undergoes a topological quantum phase transition f…
Majorana fermions often coexist with other low-energy fermionic degrees of freedom. In such situation, topological quantum computation requires the use of fermionic zero modes of a many-body system. We classify all such modes for interacting fermions and show how to select the mode that maximizes the decoherence time. We find that in a typical interacting system the maximal decoherence time is within one order of magnitude from the decoherence time of a qbit based on the local part of the fermion parity operator.
Majorana bound states, with their non-Abelian properties, are candidates for the realization of fault-tolerant quantum computation. Here we study the influence of long-range many-body interactions on Majorana zero modes present in Kitaev chains. We show that these interactions can suppress the lifetime of the Majorana zero mode. We also discuss the role of long-range interactions on the Majorana state's spatial structure, and the overlap of the Majorana states localized at opposite ends of the chain. We have determined that increasing the interaction strength leads to decreasing of the stabili…
In this paper, a one-dimensional non-Hermitian quasiperiodic $p$-wave superconductor without $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry is studied. By analyzing the spectrum, we discovered there still exists real-complex energy transition even if the inexistence of $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry breaking. By the inverse participation ratio, we constructed such a correspondence that pure real energies correspond to the extended states and complex energies correspond to the localized states, and this correspondence is precise and effective to detect the mobility edges. After investigating the topological properties, we a…
We present quantum control techniques to engineer flat bands of symmetry-protected Majorana edge modes in s-wave superconductors. Specifically, we show how periodic control may be employed for designing time-independent effective Hamiltonians, which support $Floquet$ $Majorana$ $flat$ $bands$, starting from equilibrium conditions that are either topologically trivial or only support individual Majorana pairs. In the first approach, a suitable modulation of the chemical potential simultaneously induces Majorana flat bands and dynamically $activates$ a pre-existing chiral symmetry which is respo…
In condensed matter systems, zero-dimensional or one-dimensional Majorana modes can be realized respectively as the end and edge states of one-dimensional and two-dimensional topological superconductors. In this $\textit{top-down}$ approach, $(d-1)$-dimensional Majorana modes are obtained as the boundary states of a topologically nontrivial $d$-dimensional bulk. In a $\textit{bottom-up}$ approach instead, $d$-dimensional Majorana modes in a $d$-dimensional system can be realized as the continuous limit of a periodic lattice of coupled $(d-1)$-dimensional Majorana modes. We illustrate this idea…
A two-dimensional time-reversal symmetric topological superconductor is a fully gapped system possessing a helical Majorana mode on the edges. This helical Majorana edge mode (HMEM), which is a Kramer's pair of two chiral Majorana edge modes in the opposite propagating directions, is robust under time-reversal symmetry protection. We propose a feasible setup and accessible measurement to provide the preliminary step of the HMEM realization by studying superconducting antiferromagnetic quantum spin Hall insulators. Since this antiferromagnetic topological insulator hosts a helical electron edge…
Majorana fermions are fascinating and not yet confirmed quasiparticles in condensed matter physics. Here we propose using microwave spectra to distinguish Majorana bound states (MBSs) from topological trivial Andreev bound states. By numerically calculating the transmission and Zeeman field dependence of the many-body excitation spectrum of a 1D Josephson junction, we find that the two kinds of bound states have distinct responses to variations in the related parameters. Furthermore, the singular behaviors of the MBSs spectrum could be attributed to the robust fractional Josephson coupling and…
We propose to realize Majorana edge and corner states in electric circuits. First, we simulate the Kitaev model by an LC electric circuit and the $p_{x}+ip_{y}$ model by an LC circuit together with operational amplifiers. Zero-energy edge states emerge in the topological phase, which are detectable by measuring impedance. Next, we simulate the Bernevig-Hughes-Zhang model by including an effective magnetic field without breaking the particle-hole symmetry, where zero-energy corner states emerge in the topological phase. It is demonstrated that they are Ising anyons subject to the braiding. Name…
Majorana zero modes in condensed matter systems have been the subject of much interest in recent years. Their non-Abelian exchange statistics, making them a unique state of matter, and their potential applications in topological quantum computation, earned them attention from both theorists and experimentalists. It is generally understood that in order to form Majorana zero modes in quasi-one-dimensional topological insulators, time-reversal symmetry must be broken. The straightforward mechanisms for doing so -- applying magnetic fields or coupling to ferromagnets -- turned out to have many un…
Among the major approaches that are being pursued for realizing quantum bits, the Majorana-based platform has been the most recent to be launched. It attempts to realize qubits which store quantum information in a topologically-protected manner. The quantum information is protected by its nonlocal storage in localized and well-separated Majorana zero modes, and manipulated by exploiting their nonabelian quantum exchange properties. Realizing these topological qubits is experimentally challenging, requiring superconductivity, helical electrons (created by spin-orbit coupling) and breaking of ti…
Chiral and helical Majorana edge modes are two archetypal gapless excitations of two-dimensional topological superconductors. They belong to superconductors from two different Altland-Zirnbauer symmetry classes characterized by $\mathbb{Z}$ and $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological invariant respectively. It seems improbable to tune a pair of co-propagating chiral edge modes to counter-propagate without symmetry breaking. Here we show that such a direct topological transition is in fact possible, provided the system possesses an additional symmetry $\mathcal{O}$ which changes the bulk topological invaria…
