Applying a microscopic model, we study theoretically the quasiparticle excitation of a twodimensional topological insulator (TI) being in proximity to a high-Tc superconductor. In the momentum space, the proximity induced pairing term in the TI layer includes both the singlet channel and triplet channel, leading to the C4 rotational symmetry breaking of the energy bands and the quasiparticle spectra. For a cylinder geometry, the zero energy edge states may appear but they are localized at the upper boundary. For the finite-size system with open boundaries, the zero energy states at the upper boundary disappear and the Majorana bound states emerge at the two lower corners. All of the results can be understood well through exploring the pairing order parameter and the anomalous Green's function.
Majorana corner modes appearing in two-dimensional second-order topological superconductors have great potential applications for fault-tolerant topological quantum computations. We demonstrate that in the presence of an in-plane magentic field two-dimensional ($s+p$)-wave superconductors host Majorana corner modes, whose location can be manipulated by the direction of the magnetic field. In addition, we discuss the effects of edge imperfections on the Majorana corner modes. We describe how different edge shapes and edge disorder affect the number and controllability of the Majorana corner mod…
In this paper we find that confining a second-order topological superconductor with a harmonic potential leads to a proliferation of Majorana corner modes. As a consequence, this results in the formation of Majorana corner flat bands which have a fundamentally different origin from that of the conventional mechanism. This is due to the fact that they arise solely from the one-dimensional gapped boundary states of the hybrid system that become gapless without the bulk gap closing under the increase of the trapping potential magnitude. The Majorana corner states are found to be robust against th…
As platforms of Majorana modes, topological insulator (quantum anomalous Hall insulator)/superconductor (SC) heterostructures have attracted tremendous attention over the past decade. Here we substitute the topological insulator by its higher-order counterparts. Concretely, we consider second-order topological insulators (SOTIs) without time-reversal symmetry and investigate SOTI/SC heterostructures in both two and three dimensions. Remarkably, we find that such novel heterostructures provide natural realizations of second-order topological superconductors (SOTSCs) which host Majorana corner m…

We review the current status of this rapidly-developing field, focusing on semiconductor-superconductor proposals for topological superconductivity. Material science progress and robust signatures of Majorana zero modes in recent experiments are discussed. After a brief introduction to the subject, we outline several next-generation experiments probing exotic properties of Majorana zero modes, including fusion rules and non-Abelian exchange statistics. We study the robustness of Majorana zero energy modes and minigaps of quasiparticle excitations in a vortex by numerically solving Bogoliubov-deGennes equations in a heterostructure composed of an \textit{s} -wave superconductor, a spin-orbit-coupled semiconductor thin film, and a magnetic insulator. This heterostructure was proposed recently as a platform for observing non-Abelian statistics and performing topological quantum computation. The dependence of the Majorana zero energy states and the minigaps on various physics parameters (Zeeman field, chemical potential, spin-orbit coupling stre…
We uncover a novel two-particle Berry phase mechanism to realize exotic corner modes in second-order topological insulators (TIs) and topological superconductors (TSCs) with time-reversal symmetry. We show that the nontrivial pseudospin textures of edge states in two different types of two-dimensional TIs give rise to the novel two-particle geometric phases in the particle-hole and particle-particle channels, respectively, for which the edge mass domain walls or intrinsic $π$-junctions emerge across corners when an external magnetic field or $s$-wave superconductivity is considered, hosting Di…
Second-order topological superconductors host Majorana corner and hingemodes in contrast to conventional edge and surface modes in two and three dimensions. However, the realization of such second-order corner modes usually demands unconventional superconducting pairing or complicated junctions or layered structures. Here we show that Majorana corner modes could be realized using a 2D quantum spin Hall insulator in proximity contact with an $s$-wave superconductor and subject to an in-plane Zeeman field. Beyond a critical value, the in-plane Zeeman field induces opposite effective Dirac masses…
We theoretically study the effect of orbital-dependent exchange field in the formation of second order topological superconductors. We demonstrate that changing the orbital difference can induce topological transition and the Majorana corner modes therein can be manipulated. We further propose to detect the corner modes via a normal probe terminal. The conductance quantization is found to be robust to changes of the relevant system parameters.
We introduce two-dimensional topological insulators in proximity to high-temperature cuprate or iron-based superconductors as high-temperature platforms of Majorana Kramers pairs of zero modes. The proximity-induced pairing at the helical edge state of the topological insulator serves as a Dirac mass, whose sign changes at the sample corner because of the pairing symmetry of high-$T_c$ superconductors. This sign changing naturally creates at each corner a pair of Majorana zero modes protected by time-reversal symmetry. Conceptually, this is a topologically trivial superconductor-based approach…
We present a pedagogical review of topological superconductivity and its consequences in spin-orbit coupled semiconductor/superconductor heterostructures. We start by reviewing the historical origins of the notions of Dirac and Majorana fermions in particle physics and discuss how lower dimensional versions of these emerge in one dimensional superconductors. Ultimately, we focus on Majorana zero-modes, which emerge at defects in the Majorana equation. We then review the definition of the topological invariant, and how it allows the prediction of such Majorana modes from the bulk bandstructure …
We propose a novel platform for the creation and manipulation of Majorana zero modes consisting of a ferromagnetic metallic wire placed between conventional superconductors which are in proximity to ferromagnetic insulators. Our device relies on the interplay of applied supercurrents and exchange fields emerging from the ferromagnetic insulators. We assert that the proposed superconductor/ferromagnet heterostructures exhibit enhanced controllability, since topological superconductivity can be tuned apart from gate voltages applied on the ferromagnetic wire, also by manipulating the applied sup…
Majorana bound states often occur at the end of 1D topological superconductor or at the $π$ Josephson junction mediated by a helical edge state. Validated by a new bulk invariant and an intuitive edge argument, we show the emergence of one Majorana Kramers pair at each corner of a square-shaped 2D topological insulator proximitized by an $s_\pm$-wave (e.g., Fe-based) superconductor. We obtain a phase diagram that emphasizes the roles of bulk parameters and edge orientations. We propose several experimental realizations in lattice-matched candidate materials. Our scheme offers a high-temperatur…

We propose an alternative platform to observe Majorana bound states in solid state systems. High critical temperature cuprate superconductors can induce superconductivity, by proximity effect, in quasi one dimensional nanowires with strong spin orbit coupling. They favor a wider and more robust range of conditions to stabilize Majorana fermions due to the large gap values, and offer novel functionalities in the design of the experiments determined by different dispersion for Andreev bound states as a function of the phase difference.
We investigate a heterostructure system with a spin-orbit coupled semiconductor sandwiched by an s-wave superconductor and a ferromagnetic insulator, which supports Majorana fermions (MFs) at the superconducting vortex cores. We propose a scheme of transporting and braiding the MFs, which only requires application of point-like gate voltages in a system with nano-meter patterns. By solving the time-dependent Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation numerically, we monitor the time evolutions of MF wave-functions and show that the braiding of MFs with non-Abelian statistics can be achieved by adiabatic sw…
We propose and analyze theoretically an experimental setup for detecting the elusive Majorana particle in semiconductor-superconductor heterostructures. The experimental system consists of one-dimensional semiconductor wire with strong spin-orbit Rashba interaction embedded into a superconducting quantum interference device. We show that the energy spectra of the Andreev bound states at the junction are qualitatively different in topologically trivial (i.e., not containing any Majorana) and nontrivial phases having an even and odd number of crossings at zero energy, respectively. The measureme…
We study a vortex chain in a thin film of a topological insulator with proximity-induced superconductivity---a promising platform to realize Majorana zero modes (MZMs)---by modeling it as a two-leg Majorana ladder. While each pair of MZMs hybridizes through vortex tunneling, we hereby show that MZMs can be stabilized on the ends of the ladder with the presence of tilted external magnetic field and four-Majorana interaction. Furthermore, a fruitful phase diagram is obtained by controlling the direction of magnetic field and the thickness of the sample. We reveal many-body Majorana states and in…
We consider the one-dimensional (1D) topological superconductor that may form in a planar superconductor-metal-superconductor Josephson junction in which the metal is is subjected to spin orbit coupling and to an in-plane magnetic field. This 1D topological superconductor has been the subject of recent theoretical and experimental attention. We examine the effect of perpendicular magnetic field and a supercurrent driven across the junction on the position and structure of the Majorana zero modes that are associated with the topological superconductor. In particular, we show that under certain …
3D topological insulator/s-wave superconductor heterostructures have been predicted as candidate systems for the observation of Majorana fermions in the presence of superconducting vortices. In these systems, Majorana fermions are expected to form at the interface between the topological insulator and the superconductor while the bulk plays no role. Yet the bulk of a 3D topological insulator penetrated by a magnetic flux is not inert and can gap the surface vortex modes destroying their Majorana nature. In this work, we demonstrate the circumstances under which only the surface physics is impo…
With the recent discovery of the quantum anomalous Hall insulator (QAHI), which exhibits the conductive quantum Hall edge states without external magnetic field, it becomes possible to create a novel topological superconductor (SC) by introducing superconductivity into these edge states. In this case, two distinct topological superconducting phases with one or two chiral Majorana edge modes were theoretically predicted, characterized by Chern numbers (N ) of 1 and 2, respectively. We present spectroscopic evidence from Andreev reflection experiments for the presence of chiral Majorana modes in…
We identify time-reversal symmetry breaking mixed-parity superconducting states that feature eight Majorana corner modes in properly cleaved three-dimensional cubic crystals. Namely, when an odd-parity isotropic $p$-wave pairing coexists with cubic symmetry preserving even-parity octupolar $d_{x^2-y^2}+i d_{3z^2-r^2}$ pairing, the gapless surface Majorana modes of the former get localized at the eight corners, thus yielding an \emph{intrinsic} third-order topological superconductor (TOTSC). A cousin $d_{xy}+id_{3z^2-r^2}$ pairing also accommodating eight corner Majorana modes, by virtue of bre…
As a half-metal is spin-polarized at its Fermi level by definition, it was conventionally thought to have little proximity effect to an s-wave superconductor. Here we show that, with interface spin-orbit coupling, $p_x +ip_y$ superconductivity without spin degeneracy is induced on the half-metal, and we give an estimate of its bulk energy gap. Therefore a single-band half-metal can give us a topological superconductor with a single chiral Majorana edge state. Our band calculation shows that two atomic layers of VTe or CrO$_2$ is a single-band half-metal for a wide range ($\sim$0.1eV) of Fermi …
Coexistence of Chiral Majorana Edge States and Bogoliubov Fermi Surfaces in Two-Dimensional Nonsymmorphic Dirac Semimetal/Superconductor Heterostructures
Second order topological insulator can be engineered from two-dimensional materials with strong spin-orbit coupling and in-plane Zeeman field. In proximity to superconductor, topological superconducting phase could be induced in the two-dimensional materials, which host Majorana corner modes at the intersection between two zigzag edges. Two types of tight binding models in hexagonal lattice, which include $p_{z}$ or $p_{x,y}$ orbit(s) in each lattice site, are applied to engineer two-dimensional materials in topological superconducting phase. In both models, the condition that induces the seco…
We propose to realize Majorana edge and corner states in electric circuits. First, we simulate the Kitaev model by an LC electric circuit and the $p_{x}+ip_{y}$ model by an LC circuit together with operational amplifiers. Zero-energy edge states emerge in the topological phase, which are detectable by measuring impedance. Next, we simulate the Bernevig-Hughes-Zhang model by including an effective magnetic field without breaking the particle-hole symmetry, where zero-energy corner states emerge in the topological phase. It is demonstrated that they are Ising anyons subject to the braiding. Name…
In a first-order topological phase with sublattice degrees of freedom, a change in the boundary sublattice termination has no effect on the existence of gapless boundary states in dimensions higher than one. However, such a change may strongly affect the physical properties of those boundary states. Motivated by this observation, we perform a systematic study of the impact of sublattice terminations on the boundary physics on the two-dimensional kagome lattice. We find that the energies of the Dirac points of helical edge states in two-dimensional first-order topological kagome insulators sens…
We investigate the local density of states, spectral function, and superconducting pair amplitudes for signatures of Majorana fermions in vortex cores in ferromagnetic and spin-orbit coupled semiconductor-superconductor heterostructures. We show that the Majorana fermion quasiparticle momentum distribution is always symmetrically distributed at a finite radius around a high symmetry point, thereby providing a necessary condition for a low-energy state to be a Majorana fermion. In real space profiles of the local density of states through the vortex core the Majorana fermion, together with othe…
Spin-orbit coupled semiconductor nanowires with Zeeman splitting in proximity contact with bulk $s$-wave superconductivity have recently been proposed as a promising platform for realizing Majorana fermions. However, in this setup the chemical potential of the nanowire is generally pinned by the Fermi surface of the superconductor. This makes the tuning of the chemical potential by external electrical gates, a crucial requirement for unambiguous detection of Majorana fermions, very challenging in experiments. Here we show that tunable topological superconducting regime supporting Majorana ferm…
Majorana fermions have been intensively studied in recent years for their importance to both fundamental science and potential applications in topological quantum computing1,2. Majorana fermions are predicted to exist in a vortex core of superconducting topological insulators3. However, they are extremely difficult to be distinguished experimentally from other quasiparticle states for the tiny energy difference between Majorana fermions and these states, which is beyond the energy resolution of most available techniques. Here, we overcome the problem by systematically investigating the spatial…
We propose a practically feasible time-periodic sinusoidal drive protocol in onsite mass term to generate the two-dimensional~(2D) Floquet second-order topological superconductor, hosting both the regular $0$- and anomalous $π$-Majorana corner modes~(MCMs) while starting from a static 2D topological insulator/$d$-wave superconductor heterostructure setup. We theoretically study the local density spectra and the time dynamics of MCMs in the presence of such drive. The dynamical MCMs are topologically characterized by employing the average quadrupolar motion. Furthermore, we employ the Floquet p…
Non-Majorana-origin of the half-integer conductance quantization elucidated by multi-terminal superconductor-quantum anomalous Hall insulator heterostructure
A fundamental obstacle for achieving quantum computation is local decoherence. One way to circumvent this problem rests on the concepts of topological quantum computation using non-local information storage, for example on pairs of Majorana fermions (MFs). The arguably most promising way to generate MFs relies at present on spin-triplet p-wave states of superconductors (SC), which are not abundant in nature, unfortunately. Thus, proposals for their engineering in devices, usually via proximity effect from a conventional SC into materials with strong spinorbit coupling (SOC), are intensively in…
We propose a realization of the lattice symmetry assisted second order topological superconductors with corner Majorana zero modes (MZM) based on two-dimensional topological insulators (2DTI). The lattice symmetry can naturally lead to the anisotropic coupling of edge states along different directions to the in-plane magnetic field and conventional s-wave pairings, thus leading to a single MZM locating at the corners for various lattice patterns. In particular, we focus on the 2DTI with D$_{3d}$ lattice symmetry and found different types of gap opening for the edge states along the armchair an…
In the heterostructure composed of a topological insulator sandwiched by two s-wave superconductors, the time reversal invariant topological superconducting phase, possessing helical Majorana edge modes, is found to exist when the two s-wave superconductors form a Josephson junction with a pi phase shift. Based on such a heterostructure, a helical Dirac-Majorana interferometer is proposed to directly measure a unique transport signature of the helical Majorana modes. Furthermore, we envision how our proposal can be realized on the basis of existing materials such as Bi2Se3 or Bi2Te3 thin films…
Here we present an analysis of the evolution of Majorana corner modes realizing in a higher-order topological superconductor (HOTSC) on a square lattice under the influence of local Coulomb repulsion. The HOTSC spectral properties were considered in two regimes: when the intensities of many-body interactions are either weak or strong. The weak regime was studied using the mean-field approximation with self-consistent solutions carried out both in the uniform case and taking into account of the boundary of the finite square-shaped system. It is shown that in the uniform case the topologically n…
We show that topological phases should be realizable in readily available and well studied heterostructures. In particular we identify a new class of topological materials which are well known in spintronics: helical ferromagnet-superconducting junctions. We note that almost all previous work on topological heterostructures has focused on creating Majorana modes at the proximity interface in effectively two-dimensional or one-dimensional systems. The particular heterostructures we address exhibit finite range proximity effects leading to nodal superconductors with Majorana modes localized well…
In this work, we demonstrate that making a cut (a narrow vacuum regime) in the bulk of a quantum anomalous Hall insulator (QAHI) creates a topologically protected single helical channel with counter-propagating electron modes, and inducing superconductivity on the helical channel through proximity effect will create Majorana zero energy modes (MZMs) at the ends of the cut. In this geometry, there is no need for the proximity gap to overcome the bulk insulating gap of the QAHI to create MZMs as in the two-dimensional QAHI/superconductor (QAHI/SC) heterostructures. Therefore, the topological reg…
We show theoretically that a heterostructure of monolayer FeTe$_{1-x}$Se$_x$ - a superconducting quantum spin Hall material - with a monolayer of FeTe - a bicollinear antiferromagnet - realizes a higher order topological superconductor phase characterized by emergent Majorana zero modes pinned to the sample corners. We provide a minimal effective model for this system, analyze the origin of higher order topology, and fully characterize the topological phase diagram. Despite the conventional s-wave pairing, we find rather surprising emergence of a novel topological nodal superconductor in the p…
Monolayer WTe$_2$, a centrosymmetric transition metal dichacogenide, has recently been established as a quantum spin Hall insulator and found superconducting upon gating. Here we study the pairing symmetry and topological nature of superconducting WTe$_2$ with a microscopic model at mean-field level. Surprisingly, we find that the spin-triplet phases in our phase diagram all host Majorana modes localized on two opposite corners. Even when the conventional pairing is favored, we find that an intermediate in-plane magnetic field exceeding the Pauli limit stabilizes an unconventional equal-spin p…
In proximity to an s-wave superconductor, a one- or two-dimensional, electron- or hole-doped semiconductor with a sizable spin-orbit coupling and a Zeeman splitting can support a topological superconducting (TS) state. The semiconductor TS state has Majorana fermions as localized zero-energy excitations at order parameter defects such as vortices and sample edges. Here we examine the effects of quenched disorder from the semiconductor surface on the stability of the TS state in both electron- and hole-doped semiconductors. By considering the interplay of broken time reversal symmetry (due to Z…
Exotic states of topological materials are challenging or impossible to create under ambient conditions.1-4 Moreover, it is unclear whether topological superconductivity, as a critical element for topological quantum computing, exists in any naturally occurring materials.5-7 Although these problems can be overcome through the combination of materials in heterostructures, there are still many requisites, such as low temperatures and specific magnetic fields.8,9 Herein, an intrinsic topological superconductor that does not depend on particular external conditions is demonstrated. It is accomplis…
We show that a film of a semiconductor such as GaAs, in which s-wave superconductivity and a Zeeman splitting are induced by proximity effect, supports zero-energy Majorana fermion modes in the ordinary vortex excitations. The key to the topological order is the existence of spin-orbit coupling, coexisting with proximity-induced s-wave superconductivity. Since time reversal symmetry is explicitly broken, the edge of the film constitutes a chiral Majorana wire. The heterostructure we propose -- a semiconducting thin film sandwiched between an s-wave superconductor and a magnetic insulator -- is…
Motivated by experiments on the superfluid 3He confined in a thin slab, we design a concrete experimental setup for observing the Majorana surface states. We solve the quasi-classical Eilenberger equation, which is quantitatively reliable, to evaluate several quantities, such as local density of states (LDOS), mass current for the A-phase, and spin current for the B-phase. In connection with realistic slab samples, we consider the upper and lower surfaces and the side edges including the corners with several thicknesses. Consequently the influence on the Majorana zero modes from the spatial va…
