Using Foster-Lyapunov techniques we establish new conditions on non-extinction, non-explosion, coming down from infinity and staying infinite, respectively, for the general continuous-state nonlinear branching processes introduced in Li et al. (2019). These results can be applied to identify boundary behaviors for the critical cases of the above nonlinear branching processes with power rate functions driven by Brownian motion and (or) stable Poisson random measure, which was left open in Li et al. (2019). In particular, we show that even in the critical cases, a phase transition happens between coming down from infinity and staying infinite.
After generalizing the criteria introduced by Chen, we establish the necessary and sufficient conditions for the extinction, explosion and coming down from infinity of a continuous-state nonlinear Neveu's branching process.
The nonlinear branching process with immigration is constructed as the pathwise unique solution of a stochastic integral equation driven by Poisson ran- dom measures. Some criteria for the regularity, recurrence, ergodicity and strong ergodicity of the process are then established.
We construct a flow of continuous time and discrete state branching processes. Some scaling limit theorems for the flow are proved, which lead to the path-valued branching processes and nonlocal branching superprocesses over the positive half line studied in Li (2012).
In this note, we study the asymptotic behaviour near extinction of (sub-) critical continuous state branching processes. In particular, we establish an analogue of Khintchin's law of the iterated logarithm near extinction time for a continuous state branching process whose branching mechanism satisfies a given condition and its reflected process at its infimum.
Under natural assumptions, a Feller type diffusion approximation is derived for critical, irreducible multi-type continuous state and continuous time branching processes with immigration. Namely, it is proved that a sequence of appropriately scaled random step functions formed from a critical, irreducible multi-type continuous state and continuous time branching process with immigration converges weakly towards a squared Bessel process supported by a ray determined by the Perron vector of a matrix related to the branching mechanism of the branching process in question.
We define the height process for super-critical continuous state branching processes with quadratic branching mechanism. It appears as a projective limit of Brownian motions with positive drift reflected at 0 and a>0 as a goes to infinity. Then we extend the pruning procedure of branching processes to the super-critical case. This give a complete duality picture between pruning and size proportional immigration for quadratic continuous state branching processes.
In this paper we provide explicit representations of Laplace transforms of extinction time and total progeny of rough continuous-state branching processes introduced in [7]. Also, we show that their tail distributions are much fatter than those of Feller branching diffusions.
A multi-type continuous state and continuous time branching process with immigration satisfying some moment conditions is identified as a pathwise unique strong solution of certain stochastic differential equation with jumps.
We construct a continuous state branching process with immigration (CBI) whose immigration depends on the CBI itself and we recover a continuous state branching process (CB). This provides a dual construction of the pruning at nodes of CB introduced by the authors in a previous paper. This construction is a natural way to model neutral mutation. Using exponential formula, we compute the probability of extinction of the original type population in a critical or sub-critical quadratic branching, conditionally on the non extinction of the total population.
In this paper, for $α\in (1, 2}$ we show that the $α$-stable continuous-state branching process and the associated process conditioned never to become extinct are positive self-similar Markov processes. Understanding the interaction of the Lamperti transformation for continuous-state branching processes and the Lamperti transformation for positive self-similar Markov processes permits accessto a number of explicit results concerning the paths of stable-continuous branching processes and its conditioned version.
Using the Lyapunov criteria arguments, we find sufficient conditions on explosion/nonexplosion for continuous-state branching processes with competition in Lévy random environment. In particular, we identify the necessary and sufficient conditions on explosion/nonexplosion when the competition function is a power function and the Lévy measure of the associated branching mechanism is stable.
Recursions for moments of multi-type continuous state and continuous time branching process with immigration are derived. It turns out that the $k$-th (mixed) moments and the $k$-th (mixed) central moments are polynomials of the initial value of the process, and their degree are at most $k$ and $\lfloor k/2 \rfloor$, respectively.
We prove the existence and pathwise uniqueness of the solution to a stochastic integral equation driven by Poisson random measures based on Kuznetsov measures for a continuous-state branching process. That gives a direct construction of the sample path of a continuous-state branching process with dependent immigration. The immigration rates depend on the population size via some functions satisfying a Yamada--Watanabe type condition. We only assume the existence of the first moment of the process. The existence of excursion law for the continuous-state branching process is not required. By spe…
We observe the continuous-time Markov Branching Process without high-order moments and allowing Immigration. Limit properties of transition functions and their convergence to invariant measures are investigated. Main mathematical tool is regularly varying generating functions with remainder.
By using the coupling technique, we present sufficient conditions for the exponential ergodicity of general continuous-state nonlinear branching processes in both the $L^1$-Wasserstein distance and the total variation norm, where the drift term is dissipative only for large distance, and either diffusion noise or jump noise is allowed to be vanished. Sufficient conditions for the corresponding strong ergodicity are also established.
We propose a class of non-Markov population models with continuous or discrete state space via a limiting procedure involving sequences of rescaled and randomly time-changed Galton--Watson processes. The class includes as specific cases the classical continuous-state branching processes and Markov branching processes. Several results such as the expressions of moments and the branching inequality governing the evolution of the process are presented and commented. The generalized Feller branching diffusion and the fractional Yule process are analyzed in detail as special cases of the general mo…
For a positive continuous function f satisfying some standard conditions, we study the f-moments of continuous-state branching processes with or without immigration. The main results give criteria for the existence of the f-moments. The characterization of the processes in terms of stochastic equations given by Dawson and Li (2012) plays an essential role in the proofs.
In the spirit of Duqesne and Winkel (2007) and Berestycki et al. (2011) we show that supercritical continuous-state branching process with a general branching mechanism and general immigration mechanism is equal in law to a continuous-time Galton Watson process with immigration with Poissonian dressing. The result also characterises the limiting backbone decomposition which is predictable from the work on consistent growth of Galton-Watson trees with immigration in Cao and Winkel (2010).
Under natural conditions, we proved the exponential ergodicity in Wasserstein distance of two-type continuous-state branching processes in Lévy random environments with immigration. Furthermore, we expressed accurately the parameters of the exponent. The coupling method and the conditioned branching property play an important role in the approach. Using the tool of superprocesses, the ergodicity in total variance distance is also proved.
A continuous-state polynomial branching process is constructed as the pathwise unique solution of a stochastic integral equation with absorbing boundary condition. The extinction and explosion probabilities and the mean extinction and explosion times are computed explicitly, which are also new in the classical branching case. We present necessary and sufficient conditions for the process to extinguish or explode in finite times. In the critical or subcritical case, we give a construction of the process coming down from infinity. Finally, it is shown that the continuous-state polynomial branchi…
We construct a modified continuous-state branching process whose Malthusian parameter is replaced by another when passing below a certain level. The construction is obtained via a Lamperti-like transform applied to a refracted Lévy process. Infinitesimal generator, probability of vanishing at infinity, of explosion and some path properties are also provided.
We study the estimation of two-type continuous-state branching processes with immigration (CBI-processes). The ergodicity of the processes is proved. We also establish the strong consistency and central limit theorems of the conditional least squares estimators and the weighted conditional least squares estimators of the drift and diffusion coefficients based on low frequency observations.
In this work, we study asymptotics of the genealogy of Galton-Watson processes. Thus we consider a offspring distribution such that the rescaled Galton-Watson processes converges to a continuous state branching process (CSBP) with jumps. After we show that the rescaled height (or exploration) process of the corresponding Galton-Watson family tree, converges in a functional sense, to the continuous height process that Le Gall and Le Jan introduced in 1998 on their paper "branching processes in Lévy processes : The exploration process".
Scaling limits for continuous-time branching processes with discrete state space are provided as the initial state tends to infinity. Depending on the finiteness or non-finiteness of the mean and/or the variance of the offspring distribution, the limits are in general time-inhomogeneous Gaussian processes, time-inhomogeneous generalized Ornstein-Uhlenbeck type processes or continuous-state branching processes. We also provide transfer results showing how specific asymptotic relations for the probability generating function of the offspring distribution carry over to those of the one-dimensiona…
Under a fourth order moment condition on the branching and a second order moment condition on the immigration mechanisms, we show that an appropriately scaled projection of a supercritical and irreducible continuous state and continuous time branching process with immigration on certain left non-Perron eigenvectors of the branching mean matrix is asymptotically mixed normal. With an appropriate random scaling, under some conditional probability measure, we prove asymptotic normality as well. In case of a non-trivial process, under a first order moment condition on the immigration mechanism, we…
Under a first order moment condition on the immigration mechanism, we show that an appropriately scaled supercritical and irreducible multi-type continuous state and continuous time branching process with immigration (CBI process) converges almost surely. If an $x \log(x)$ moment condition on the branching mechanism does not hold, then the limit is zero. If this $x \log(x)$ moment condition holds, then we prove $L_1$ convergence as well. The projection of the limit on any left non-Perron eigenvector of the branching mean matrix is vanishing. If, in addition, a suitable extra power moment condi…
We consider the genealogical tree of a stationary continuous state branching process with immigration. For a sub-critical stable branching mechanism, we consider the genealogical tree of the extant population at some fixed time and prove that, up to a deterministic time-change, it is distributed as a continuous-time Galton-Watson process with immigration. We obtain similar results for a critical stable branching mechanism when only looking at immigrants arriving in some fixed time-interval. For a general sub-critical branching mechanism, we consider the number of individuals that give descenda…
These notes were used in a short graduate course on branching processes the author gave in Beijing Normal University. The following main topics are covered: scaling limits of Galton--Watson processes, continuous-state branching processes, extinction probabilities, conditional limit theorems, decompositions of sample paths, martingale problems, stochastic equations, Lamperti's transformations, independent and dependent immigration processes. Some of the results are simplified versions of those in the author's book "Measure-valued branching Markov processes" (Springer, 2011). We hope these simpl…
We first derive the recurisions for integer moments of two-type continuous-state branching processes in Lévy random environments. Result shows that the $n$th moment of the process is a polynomial of the initial value of the process with at most $n$ degree. Under some natural condition, the criteria for the existence of $f$-moment of the process are also proved.
A continuous-state branching process in varying environments is constructed by the pathwise unique solution to a stochastic integral equation driven by time-space noises. The process arises naturally in the limit theorem of Galton--Watson processes in varying environments established by Bansaye and Simatos (2015). In terms of the stochastic equation we clarify the behavior of the continuous-state process at its bottlenecks, which are the times when it arrives at zero almost surely by negative jumps.
We study the distribution of the maximal jump of continuous-state branching processes. Several exact expressions and explicit asymptotics of both the local maximal jump and the global maximal jump are obtained. We also compare the distribution of the maximal jump and the Lévy measure to get several absolute continuity results. Then we study local convergence of continuous-state branching processes under various conditionings. We obtain complete results under the conditioning of large maximal jump, and partial results under two other conditionings, which are, the conditioning of large width, an…
This paper uses two new ingredients, namely stochastic differential equations satisfied by continuous-state branching processes (CSBPs), and a topology under which the Lamperti transformation is continuous, in order to provide self-contained proofs of Lamperti's 1967 representation of CSBPs in terms of spectrally positive Lévy processes. The first proof is a direct probabilistic proof, and the second one uses approximations by discrete processes, for which the Lamperti representation is evident.
Continuous state branching processes with immigration are studied. We are particularly concerned with the associated (non-symmetric) Dirichlet form. After observing that gamma distributions are only reversible distributions for this class of models, we prove that every generalized gamma convolution is a stationary distribution of the process with suitably chosen branching mechanism and with continuous immigration. For such non-reversible processes, the strong sector condition is discussed in terms of a characteristic called the Thorin measure. In addition, some connections with notion from non…
Continuous-state branching processes (CSBPs) with immigration (CBIs), stopped on hitting zero, are generalized by allowing the process governing immigration to be any Lévy process without negative jumps. Unlike the CBIs, these newly introduced processes do not appear to satisfy any natural affine property on the level of the Laplace transforms of the semigroups. Basic properties are noted. Explicit formulae (on neighborhoods of infinity) for the Laplace transforms of the first passage times downwards and of the explosion time are derived.
We study the speed of extinction of continuous state branching processes in a Lévy environment, where the associated Lévy process oscillates. Assuming that the Lévy process satisfies the Spitzer's condition and the existence of some exponential moments, we extend recent results where the associated branching mechanism was stable. Our study relies on the path analysis of the process together with its environment, when this latter is conditioned to have a non negative running infimum. This approach is inspired from the discrete setting with i.i.d. environment studied in (Afanasyev et al. 2005).
For a generalized continuous state branching process with non-vanishing diffusion part, finite expectation and a directed ("left-to-right") interaction, we construct the height process of its forest of genealogical trees. The connection between this height process and the population size process is given by an extension of the second Ray--Knight theorem. This paper generalizes earlier work of the two last authors which was restricted to the case of continuous branching mechanisms. Our approach is different from that of Berestycki et al. There the diffusion part of the population process was al…
A continuous time mixed state branching process is constructed as the scaling limits of two-type Galton-Watson processes. The process can also be obtained by the pathwise unique solution to a stochastic equation system. From the stochastic equation system we derive the distribution of local jumps and the exponential ergodicity in Wasserstein-type distances of the transition semigroup is given. Meanwhile, we study immigration structures associated with the process and prove the existence of the stationary distribution of the process with immigration.
Recently in Barczy, Li and Pap (2015), the notion of a multi-type continuous-state branching process (with immigration) having d-types was introduced as a solution to an d-dimensional vector- valued SDE. Preceding that, work on affine processes, originally motivated by math- ematical finance, in Duffie, Filipovic and Schachermayer (2003) also showed the existence of such processes. See also more recent contributions in this direction due to Gabrielli and Teichmann (2014) and Caballero, Perez Garmendia and Uribe Bravo (2015). Older work on multi-type continuous-state branching processes is more…
In this paper, we consider a class of generalized continuous-state branching processes obtained by Lamperti type time changes of spectrally positive Lévy processes using different rate functions. When explosion occurs to such a process, we show that the process converges to infinity in finite time asymptotically along a deterministic curve, and identify the speed of explosion for rate function in different regimes. To prove the main theorems, we also establish a new asymptotic result for scale function of spectrally positive Lévy process.
A version of ``preferential attachment'' random graphs, corresponding to linear ``weights'' with random ``edge additions,'' which generalizes some previously considered models, is studied. This graph model is embedded in a continuous-time branching scheme and, using the branching process apparatus, several results on the graph model asymptotics are obtained, some extending previous results, such as growth rates for a typical degree and the maximal degree, behavior of the vertex where the maximal degree is attained, and a law of large numbers for the empirical distribution of degrees which show…
A multitype continuous-state branching process (MCSBP) ${\rm Z}=({\rm Z}_{t})_{t\geq 0}$, is a Markov process with values in $[0,\infty)^{d}$ that satisfies the branching property. Its distribution is characterised by its branching mechanism, that is the data of $d$ Laplace exponents of $\mathbb{R}^d$-valued spectrally positive Lévy processes, each one having $d-1$ increasing components. We give an expression of the probability for a MCSBP to tend to 0 at infinity in term of its branching mechanism. Then we prove that this extinction holds at a finite time if and only if some condition bearing…
In this article we provide a sufficient condition for a continuous-state branching process with immigration (CBI process) to not hit its boundary, i.e. for non-extinction. Our result applies to arbitrary dimension $d \geq 1$ and is formulated in terms of an integrability condition for its immigration and branching mechanisms $F$ and $R$. The proof is based on a suitable comparison with one-dimensional CBI processes and an existing result for one-dimensional CBI processes. The same technique is also used to provide a sufficient condition for transience of multi-type CBI processes.
The purpose of this article is to observe that the zero sets of continuous-state branching processes with immigration (CBI) are infinitely divisible regenerative sets. Indeed, they can be constructed by the procedure of random cutouts introduced by Mandelbrot in 1972. We then show how very precise information about the zero sets of CBI can be obtained in terms of the branching and immigrating mechanism.
Branching processes and Fleming-Viot processes are two main models in stochastic population theory. Incorporating an immigration in both models, we generalize the results of Shiga (1990) and Birkner et al. (2005) which respectively connect the Feller diffusion with the classical Fleming-Viot process and the alpha-stable continuous state branching process with the Beta(2-alpha, alpha)-generalized Fleming-Viot process. In a recent work, a new class of probability-measure valued processes, called M-generalized Fleming-Viot processes with immigration, has been set up in duality with the so-called …
We encode the genealogy of a continuous-state branching process associated with a branching mechanism $Ψ$ - or $Ψ$-CSBP in short - using a stochastic flow of partitions. This encoding holds for all branching mechanisms and appears as a very tractable object to deal with asymptotic behaviours and convergences. In particular we study the so-called Eve property - the existence of an ancestor from which the entire population descends asymptotically - and give a necessary and sufficient condition on the $Ψ$-CSBP for this property to hold. Finally, we show that the flow of partitions unifies the loo…
In this paper we study the conditional limit theorems for critical continuous-state branching processes with branching mechanism $ψ(λ)=λ^{1+α}L(1/λ)$ where $α\in [0,1]$ and $L$ is slowly varying at $\infty$. We prove that if $α\in (0,1]$, there are norming constants $Q_{t}\to 0$ (as $t\uparrow +\infty$) such that for every $x>0$, $P_{x}\left(Q_{t}X_{t}\in\cdot|X_{t}>0\right)$ converges weakly to a non-degenerate limit. The converse assertion is also true provided the regularity of $ψ$ at 0. We give a conditional limit theorem for the case $α=0$. The limit theorems we obtain in this paper allow…
We provide a simple set of sufficient conditions for the weak convergence of discrete Galton-Watson branching processes with immigration to continuous time and continuous state branching processes with immigration.
We consider the class of continuous-state branching processes with immigration (CBI-processes), introduced by Kawazu and Watanabe (1971) and their limit distributions as time tends to infinity. We determine the Levy-Khintchine triplet of the limit distribution and give an explicit description in terms of the characteristic triplets of the Levy subordinator and the spectrally positive Levy process, which describe the immigration resp. branching mechanism of the CBI-process. This representation allows us to describe the support of the limit distribution and characterise its absolute continuity a…
We develop a new methodology for the fluctuation theory of continuous-time skip-free Markov chains, extending the recent work of Choi and Patie [5] for discrete-time skip-free Markov chains. As the main application we use it to derive a full set of fluctuation identities regarding exiting a finite or infinite interval for Markov branching processes with immigration, thereby uncovering many new results for this classical family of continuous-time Markov chains. The theory also allows us to recover in a simple manner fluctuation identities for skip-free downward compound Poisson processes.

In this manuscript, we continue with the systematic study of the speed of extinction of continuous state branching processes in Lévy environments under more general branching mechanisms. Here, we deal with the weakly subcritical regime under the assumption that the branching mechanism is regularly varying. We extend recent results of Li and Xu [14] and Palau et al. [17], where it is assumed that the branching mechanism is stable and complement the recent articles of Bansaye et al. [2] and by the authors in [7], where the critical and the strongly and intermediate subcritical cases were treated…
Motivated by the study of a parasite infection in a cell line, we introduce a general class of Markov processes for the modelling of population dynamics. The population process evolves as a diffusion with positive jumps whose rate is a function of the population size. It also undergoes catastrophic events which kill a fraction of the population, at a rate depending on the population state. We study the long time behaviour of this class of processes.
