In this paper, we give a more down-to-earth introduction to the connection between Gelfand-Tsetlin modules over $\mathfrak{gl}_n$ and diagrammatic KLRW algebras, and develop some of its consequences. In addition to a new proof of this description of the category Gelfand-Tsetlin modules appearing in earlier work, we show three new results of independent interest: (1) we show that every simple Gelfand-Tsetlin module is a canonical module in the sense of Early, Mazorchuk and Vishnyakova, and characterize when two maximal ideals have isomorphic canonical modules, (2) we show that the dimensions of Gelfand-Tsetlin weight spaces in simple modules can be computed using an appropriate modification of Leclerc's algorithm for computing dual canonical bases, and (3) we construct a basis of the Verma modules of $\mathfrak{sl}_n$ which consists of generalized eigenvectors for the Gelfand-Tsetlin subalgebra.
Furthermore, we present computations of multiplicities and Gelfand-Kirillov dimensions for all integral Gelfand-Tsetlin modules in ranks 3 and 4; unfortunately, for ranks $>4$, our computers are not adequate to perform these computations.
In the paper using the method of $Z$-invariants of Zhelobenko we construct base vectors of Gelfand-Tsetlin type in a representation of $\mathfrak{o}_{2n+1}$, based on restrictions $\mathfrak{o}_{2n+1}\downarrow\mathfrak{o}_{2n-1}$. The construction is based on a discovered relation between restriction problems $\mathfrak{o}_{2n+1}\downarrow\mathfrak{o}_{2n-1}$ and $\mathfrak{gl}_{n+1}\downarrow\mathfrak{gl}_{n-1}$.
We provide a classification and an explicit realization of all irreducible Gelfand-Tsetlin modules of the complex Lie algebra sl(3). The realization of these modules uses regular and derivative Gelfand-Tsetlin tableaux. In particular, we list all simple Gelfand-Tsetlin sl(3)-modules with infinite-dimensional weight spaces. Also, we express all simple Gelfand-Tsetlin sl(3)-modules as subquotionets of localized Gelfand-Tsetlin E_{21}-injective modules.
We prove a conjecture for the irreducibility of singular Gelfand-Tsetlin modules. We describe explicitly the irreducible subquotients of certain classes of singular Gelfand-Tsetlin modules.
We propose a new effective method of constructing explicitly Gelfand -Tsetlin modules for $\mathfrak{gl}_n$. We obtain a large family of simple modules that have a basis consisting of Gelfand-Tsetlin tableaux, the action of the Lie algebra is given by the Gelfand-Tsetlin formulas and with all Gelfand-Tsetlin multiplicities equal $1$. As an application of our construction we prove necessary and sufficient condition for the Gelfand and Graev's continuation construction to define a module which was conjectured by Lemire and Patera.
The purpose of this paper is to construct new families of irreducible Gelfand-Tsetlin modules for U_q(gl_n). These modules have arbitrary singularity and Gelfand-Tsetlin multiplicities bounded by 2. Most previously known irreducible modules had all Gelfand-Tsetlin multiplicities bounded by 1 \cite{FRZ1}, \cite{FRZ2}. In particular, our method works for q=1 providing new families of irreducible Gelfand-Tsetlin modules for gl_n. This generalizes the results of \cite{FGR3} and \cite{FRZ}.
A construction of Gelfand-Tsetlin type base vectors in a finite-dimensional representation of $\mathfrak{sp}_{2n}$ was firstly obtained in 60-th by Zhelobenko. But the final construction was obtained only in the year 1998 by Molev, who gave a construction of Gelfand-Tsetlin type base vectors and derived formulas for the action of generators of the algebra in this base. These two approaches use different ideas. In the present paper we compare these two approaches. Also we show that the Molev's base vectors can be obtained using a construction based on a relation between restriction problems $\m…
In this note we compute the leading term with respect to the De Concini-Kac filtration of $U_q(\mathfrak{gl}_n)$ of a generating set for the quantum Gelfand-Tsetlin subalgebra.
The classical Gelfand-Tsetlin formulas provide a basis in terms of tableaux and an explicit action of the generators of $\mathfrak{gl} (n)$ for every irreducible finite-dimensional $\mathfrak{gl} (n)$-module. These formulas can be used to define a $\mathfrak{gl} (n)$-module structure on some infinite-dimensional modules - the so-called generic Gelfand-Tsetlin modules. The generic Gelfand-Tsetlin modules are convenient to work with since for every generic tableau there exists a unique irreducible generic Gelfand-Tsetlin module containing this tableau as a basis element. In this paper we initiat…
A Gelfand-Tsetlin tableau $T(v)$ induces a character $χ_v$ of the Gelfand-Tsetlin subalgebra $Γ$ of $U = U(\mathfrak{gl}(n,\mathbb C))$. By a theorem due to Ovsienko, for each tableau $T(v)$ there exists a finite number of nonisomorphic irreducible Gelfand-Tsetlin modules with $χ_v$ in its support, though explicit examples of such modules are only known for special families of characters. In this article we build a family of Gelfand-Tsetlin modules parametrized by characters, such that each character appears in its corresponding module. We also find the support of these modules, with multiplic…
We provide a classification and explicit bases of tableaux of all irreducible subquotients of generic Gelfand-Tsetlin modules over Uq(gl(n)) where q different 1 and -1.
We study the structure of the Gelfand-Tsetlin subalgebras of a family of idempotent truncations of the generalized blob algebras. We obtain optimal presentations in terms of generators and relations, monomial basis and dimension formula.
We prove a uniqueness theorem for irreducible non-critical Gelfand-Tsetlin modules. The uniqueness result leads to a complete classification of the irreducible Gelfand-Tsetlin modules with 1-singularity. An explicit construction of such modules was given in \cite{FGR2}. In particular, we show that the modules constructed in \cite{FGR2} exhaust all irreducible Gelfand-Tsetlin modules with 1-singularity. To prove the result we introduce a new category of modules (called Drinfeld category) related to the Drinfeld generators of the Yangian Y(gl_n) and define a functor from the category of non-crit…
We address the problem of classifying of irreducible Gelfand-Tsetlin modules for gl(m|n) and show that it reduces to the classification of Gelfand-Tsetlin modules for the even part. We also give an explicit tableaux construction and the irreducibility criterion for the class of quasi typical and quasi covariant Gelfand-Tsetlin modules which includes all essentially typical and covariant tensor finite dimensional modules. In the quasi typical case new irreducible representations are infinite dimensional gl(m|n)-modules which are isomorphic to the parabolically induced (Kac) modules.
Singular Gelfand-Tsetlin modules of index 2 are modules whose tableaux bases may have singular pairs but no singular triples of entries on each row. In this paper we construct singular Gelfand-Tsetlin modules for arbitrary singular character of index 2. Explicit bases of derivative tableaux and the action of the generators of $\mathfrak{gl}(n)$ are given for these modules. Our construction leads to new families of irreducible Gelfand-Tsetlin modules and also provides tableaux bases for some simple Verma modules.
We give an elementary construction of a $p\geq 1$-singular Gelfand-Tsetlin $\mathfrak{gl}_n(\mathbb C)$-module in terms of local distributions. This is a generalization of the universal $1$-singular Gelfand-Tsetlin $\mathfrak{gl}_n(\mathbb C)$-module obtained in [FGR1]. We expect that the family of new Gelfand-Tsetlin modules that we obtained will lead to a classification of all irreducible $p>1$-singular Gelfand-Tsetlin modules. So far such a classification is known only for singularity $n=1$.
In the present paper we study Gelfand-Tsetlin modules defined in terms of BGG differential operators. The structure of these modules is described with the aid of the Postnikov-Stanley polynomials introduced in [PS09]. These polynomials are used to identify the action of the Gelfand-Tsetlin subalgebra on the BGG operators. We also provide explicit bases of the corresponding Gelfand-Tsetlin modules and prove a simplicity criterion for these modules. The results hold for modules defined over standard Galois orders of type $A$ - a large class of rings that include the universal enveloping algebra …
In the present paper we describe a new class of Gelfand--Tsetlin modules for an arbitrary complex simple finite-dimensional Lie algebra g and give their geometric realization as the space of delta-functions" on the flag manifold G/B supported at the 1-dimensional submanifold. When g=sl(n) (or gl(n)) these modules form a subclass of Gelfand-Tsetlin modules with infinite dimensional weight subspaces. We discuss their properties and describe the simplicity criterion for these modules in the case of the Lie algebra sl(3,C).
We give a survey on the Littlewood-Richardson rule. Using Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns as the main machinery of our analysis, we study the interrelationship of various combinatorial descriptions of the Littlewood-Richardson rule.
We give a crystal structure on the set of Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns which parametrize bases for finite-dimensional irreducible representations of the general linear Lie algebra. The crystal data are given in closed form, expressed using tropical polynomial functions of the entries of the patterns. We prove that with this crystal structure, the natural bijection between Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns and semistandard Young tableaux is a crystal isomorphism.
This work is part of a project on weight bases for the irreducible representations of semisimple Lie algebras with respect to which the representation matrices of the Chevalley generators are given by explicit formulas. In the case of sl_n, the celebrated Gelfand-Tsetlin basis is the only such basis known. Using the setup of supporting graphs developed by Donnelly, we present a simple combinatorial proof of the Gelfand-Tsetlin formulas based on a rational function identity. Some properties of the Gelfand-Tsetlin basis are derived via an algorithm for solving certain equations on the lattice of…
We present a simplified way to construct the Gelfand-Tsetlin modules over $\mathfrak{gl}(n,\mathbb C)$ related to a $1$-singular GT-tableau defined by Futorny, Grantcharov and Ramirez. We begin by reframing the classical construction of generic Gelfand-Tsetlin modules found by Drozd, Futorny and Ovsienki, showing that they form a flat family over generic points of $\mathbb C^{\binom{n}{2}}$. We then show that this family can be extended to a flat family over a variety including generic points and $1$-singular points for a fixed singular pair of entries. The $1$-singular modules are precisely t…
The most famous simple Lie algebra is $sl_n$ (the $n \times n$ matrices with trace equals $0$). The representation theory for $sl_n$ has been one of the most important research areas for the past hundred years and within their the simple finite-dimensional modules have become very important. They are classified and Gelfand and Tsetlin actually gave an explicit construction of a basis for every simple module. We extend it by providing theorems and proofs, and construct monomial bases of the simple module.
Young's orthogonal basis is a classical basis for an irreducible representation of a symmetric group. This basis happens to be a Gelfand-Tsetlin basis for the chain of symmetric groups. It is well-known that the chain of alternating groups, just like the chain of symmetric groups, has multiplicity-free restrictions for irreducible representations. Therefore each irreducible representation of an alternating group also admits Gelfand-Tsetlin bases. Moreover, each such representation is either the restriction of, or a subrepresentation of, the restriction of an irreducible representation of a sym…
We introduce the notion of essential support of a simple Gelfand-Tsetlin $\mathfrak{gl}_n$-module as an important tool towards understanding the character formula of such module. This support detects the weights in the module having maximal possible Gelfand-Tsetlin multiplicities. Using combinatorial tools we describe the essential supports of the simple socles of the universal tableaux modules. We also prove that every simple Verma module appears as a socle of a universal tableaux module and hence obtain a description of the essential supports of all simple Verma modules. As a consequence, we…
S. Ovsienko proved that the Gelfand-Tsetlin variety for $\mathfrak{gl}_n$ is equidimensional (i.e., all its irreducible components have the same dimension) of dimension $\frac{n(n-1)}{2}$. This result is known as Ovsienko's Theorem and it has important consequences in Representation Theory of Algebras. In this paper, we will study the Gelfand-Tsetlin varieties for restricted Yangian $Y_p(\mathfrak{gl}_n)$ and the equidimensionality for $Y_p(\mathfrak{gl}_3)$.
We construct functors categorifying the branching rules for $U_q(\mathfrak{g})$ for $\mathfrak{g}$ of type $B_n$, $C_n$, and $D_n$ for the embeddings $so_{2n+1}\supset so_{2n-1}$, $sp_{2n}\supset sp_{2n-2}$, and $so_{2n}\supset so_{2n-2}$. We give the corresponding categorical Gelfand-Tsetlin basis.
For the Lie algebras $g_n= \mathfrak{o}_{2n+1},\mathfrak{sp}_{2n},\mathfrak{o}_{2n}$ a simple construction of a base in an irreducible representation is given. The construction of this base uses the method of $Z$-invariants of Zhelobenko and the technique of Wigner coefficients, which was applied by Biedenharn and Baird to the construction of a Gelfand-Tsetlin base in the case $\mathfrak{gl}_n$. A relation between matrix elements and Wigner coefficients for $g_n$ and analogous objects for $\mathfrak{gl}_{n+1}$ is established.
This paper is a study of the polyhedral geometry of Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns arising in the representation theory $\mathfrak{gl}_n \C$ and algebraic combinatorics. We present a combinatorial characterization of the vertices and a method to calculate the dimension of the lowest-dimensional face containing a given Gelfand-Tsetlin pattern. As an application, we disprove a conjecture of Berenstein and Kirillov about the integrality of all vertices of the Gelfand-Tsetlin polytopes. We can construct for each $n\geq5$ a counterexample, with arbitrarily increasing denominators as $n$ grows, of a non-i…
We exploit the idea that the character of an irreducible finite dimensional $\mathfrak{gl}_n$-module is the sum of certain exponents of integer points in a Gelfand-Tsetlin polytope and can thus be calculated via Brion's theorem. In order to show how the result of such a calculation matches Weyl's character formula we prove some interesting combinatorial traits of Gelfand-Tsetlin polytopes. Namely, we show that under the relevant substitution the integer point transforms of all but $n!$ vertices vanish, the remaining ones being the summands in Weyl's formula.
S. Ovsienko proved that the Gelfand-Tsetlin variety for $\mathfrak{gl}_n$ is equidimensional (i.e. all its irreducible components have the same dimension) with dimension equals $\frac{n(n-1)}{2}$. This result has important consequences in Representation Theory of Algebras, implying, in particular, the equidimensionality of the nilfiber of the Kostant-Wallach map. In this paper we will present the generalization of this result and will address a weak version of Ovsienko's Theorem which includes the regular case.
Laumon moduli spaces are certain smooth closures of the moduli spaces of maps from the projective line to the flag variety of GL_n. We calculate the equivariant cohomology rings of the Laumon moduli spaces in terms of Gelfand-Tsetlin subalgebra of U(gl_n), and formulate a conjectural answer for the small quantum cohomology rings in terms of certain commutative shift of argument subalgebras of U(gl_n).
This is a review paper on the Gelfand-Tsetlin type bases for representations of the classical Lie algebras. Different approaches to construct the original Gelfand-Tsetlin bases for representations of the general linear Lie algebra are discussed. Weight basis constructions for representations of the orthogonal and symplectic Lie algebras are reviewed. These rely on the representation theory of the B,C,D type twisted Yangians
In the paper a realization of representation of a Lie algebra $\mathfrak{sp}_4$ in the space of function on the Lie group $Sp_4$ is considered. We find a function corresponding to a Gelfand-Tsetlin type vector for $\mathfrak{sp}_4$ constructed by D.P. Zhelobenko. This function is expressed though a $A$-hypergeometric function. After developing some new technique we derive analytically formulas for the action of generators of algebra in this base (the were not known before). These formula turn out to be much more difficult than the formulas for the action of generators in the Gelfand-Tsetlin ty…
We construct generic Gelfand-Tsetlin representations of the $\imath$quantum groups $U_q^{\text{tw}}(\mathfrak{so}_3)$ and $U_q^{\text{tw}}(\mathfrak{so}_4)$. These representations are infinite-dimensional analogs to the finite-dimensional irreducible representations provided by Gavrilik and Klimyk. They are quantum analogs of generic Gelfand-Tsetlin representations constructed by Mazorchuk. We give sufficient conditions for irreducibility and provide an upper bound for the length with the help of Casimir elements found by Molev, Ragoucy, and Sorba.
In their study of the equivariant K-theory of the generalized flag varieties $G/P$, where $G$ is a complex semisimple Lie group, and $P$ is a parabolic subgroup of $G$, Lenart and Postnikov introduced a combinatorial tool, called the alcove paths model. It provides a model for the highest weight crystals with dominant integral highest weights, generalizing the model by semistandard Young tableaux. In this paper, we prove a simple and explicit formula describing the crystal isomorphism between the alcove paths model and the Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns model for type $A$.
A realization of representations of the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{o}_5$ in the space of functions on a group $Spin_5\simeq Sp_4$ is considered. In a representation we take a Gelfand-Tsetlin type base associated with a restriction $\mathfrak{o}_5\downarrow\mathfrak{o}_3$. Such a base is useful is problems appearing in quantum mechanics. We construct explicitely functions on the group that correspond to base vectors. As in the cases of Lie algebras $\mathfrak{gl}_3$, $\mathfrak{sp}_4$ these functions can be expressed through $A$-hypergeometric functions (this does not hold for algebras of these ser…
This paper completes a series devoted to explicit constructions of finite-dimensional irreducible representations of the classical Lie algebras. Here the case of odd orthogonal Lie algebras (of type B) is considered (two previous papers dealt with C and D types). A weight basis for each representation of the Lie algebra o(2n+1) is constructed. The basis vectors are parametrized by Gelfand--Tsetlin-type patterns. Explicit formulas for the matrix elements of generators of o(2n+1) in this basis are given. The construction is based on the representation theory of the Yangians. A similar approach i…
We consider two bases for an arbitrary finite dimensional irreducible representation of a complex special linear Lie algebra: the classical Gelfand-Tsetlin basis and the relatively new Chari-Loktev basis. Both are parametrized by the set of (integral Gelfand-Tsetlin) patterns with a fixed bounding sequence determined by the highest weight of the representation. We define the "row-wise dominance" partial order on this set of patterns, and prove that the transition matrix between the two bases is triangular with respect to this partial order. We write down explicit expressions for the diagonal e…
We associate to an arbitrary positive root $α$ of a complex semisimple finite-dimensional Lie algebra $\mfrak{g}$ a twisting endofunctor $T_α$ of the category of $\mfrak{g}$-modules. We apply this functor to generalized Verma modules in the category $\mcal{O}(\mfrak{g})$ and construct a family of $α$-Gelfand--Tsetlin modules with finite $Γ_α$-multiplicities, where $Γ_α$ is a commutative $\C$-subalgebra of the universal enveloping algebra of $\mfrak{g}$ generated by a Cartan subalgebra of $\mfrak{g}$ and by the Casimir element of the $\mfrak{sl}(2)$-subalgebra corresponding to the root $α$. Thi…
Stanley (1986) showed how a finite partially ordered set gives rise to two polytopes, called the order polytope and chain polytope, which have the same Ehrhart polynomial despite being quite different combinatorially. We generalize his result to a wider family of polytopes constructed from a poset P with integers assigned to some of its elements. Through this construction, we explain combinatorially the relationship between the Gelfand-Tsetlin polytopes (1950) and the Feigin-Fourier-Littelmann polytopes (2010), which arise in the representation theory of the special linear Lie algebra. We then…
A weight ring in type A is the coordinate ring of the GIT quotient of the variety of flags in $\C^n$ modulo a twisted action of the maximal torus in $\SL(n,\C)$. We show that any weight ring in type A is generated by elements of degree strictly less than the Krull dimension, which is at worst $O(n^2)$. On the other hand, we show that the associated semigroup of Gelfand--Tsetlin patterns can have an essential generator of degree exponential in $n$.
The universal enveloping algebra of any semisimple Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ contains a family of maximal commutative subalgebras, called shift of argument subalgebras, parametrized by regular Cartan elements of $\mathfrak{g}$. For $\mathfrak{g}=\mathfrak{gl}_n$ the Gelfand-Tsetlin commutative subalgebra in $U(\mathfrak{g})$ arises as some limit of subalgebras from this family. We study the analogous limit of shift of argument subalgebras for the Lie algebras $\mathfrak{g}=\mathfrak{sp}_{2n}$ and $\mathfrak{g}=\mathfrak{so}_{2n+1}$. The limit subalgebra is described explicitly in terms of Bet…
We introduce a stochastic dynamics related to the measures that arise in harmonic analysis on the infinite-dimensional unitary group. Our dynamics is obtained as a limit of a sequence of natural Markov chains on Gelfand-Tsetlin graph. We compute finite-dimensional distributions of the limit Markov process, the generator and eigenfunctions of the semigroup related to this process. The limit process can be identified with Doob h-transform of a family of independent diffusions. Space-time correlation functions of the limit process have a determinantal form.
The Gelfand-Tsetlin graph is an infinite graded graph that encodes branching of irreducible characters of the unitary groups. The boundary of the Gelfand-Tsetlin graph has at least three incarnations --- as a discrete potential theory boundary, as the set of finite indecomposable characters of the infinite-dimensional unitary group, and as the set of doubly infinite totally positive sequences. An old deep result due to Albert Edrei and Dan Voiculescu provides an explicit description of the boundary; it can be realized as a region in an infinite-dimensional coordinate space. The paper contains …
This paper is devoted to an elementary new construction of $1$-singular Gelfand-Tsetlin modules using complex geometry. We introduce a universal ring $\mathcal D_o$ together with the vector space $\mathcal S=\mathcal S(\mathcal D_o)$ with basis $\mathcal B_o = \mathcal B(\mathcal D_o)$ formed from some local distributions such that $\mathcal S$ is a natural $\mathcal D_o$-module. For any homomorphism of rings $\mathcal U(\mathfrak{h}) \to \mathcal D_o$, where $\mathfrak{h}$ is a Lie algebra, it follows that $\mathcal S$ is also an $\mathfrak{h}$-module. We observe that the homomorphism of ring…
We construct a four-parameter family of Markov processes on infinite Gelfand-Tsetlin schemes that preserve the class of central (Gibbs) measures. Any process in the family induces a Feller Markov process on the infinite-dimensional boundary of the Gelfand-Tsetlin graph or, equivalently, the space of extreme characters of the infinite-dimensional unitary group U(infinity). The process has a unique invariant distribution which arises as the decomposing measure in a natural problem of harmonic analysis on U(infinity) posed in arXiv:math/0109193. As was shown in arXiv:math/0109194, this measure ca…
In our previous work (arXiv:1807.11126) we studied the analogous limit of shift of argument subalgebras for the Lie algebras $\mathfrak{g}=\mathfrak{sp}_{2n}$ and $\mathfrak{g}=\mathfrak{o}_{2n+1}$. We described the li…
Remarkable subalgebras of the Yangian for gl_n called the shifted Yangians were introduced in a recent work by Brundan and Kleshchev in relation to their study of finite W-algebras. In particular, in that work a classification of finite-dimensional irreducible representations of the shifted Yangians and the associated finite W-algebras was given. We construct a class of these representations in an explicit form via bases of Gelfand-Tsetlin type.
Macdonald polynomials are an important class of symmetric functions, with connections to many different fields. Etingof and Kirillov showed an intimate connection between these functions and representation theory: they proved that Macdonald polynomials arise as (suitably normalized) vector-valued characters of irreducible representations of quantum groups. In this paper, we provide a branching rule for these characters. The coefficients are expressed in terms of skew Macdonald polynomials with plethystic substitutions. We use our branching rule to give an expansion of the characters with respe…
