Recent studies on excitons in two-dimensional materials have been widely conducted for their potential usages for novel electronic and optical devices. Especially, sophisticated manipulation techniques of quantum degrees of freedom of excitons are demanded. In this paper we propose a technique of forming an optical dipole trap for excitons in graphane, a two-dimensional wide gap semiconductor, based on first principles calculations. We develop a first principles method to evaluate the exciton transition dipole matrix and combine it with the density functional theory and GW+BSE calculations. We reveal that in graphane the huge exciton binding energy and the large dipole moments of Wannier-like excitons enable us to induce the dipole trap of the order of meV depth and $μ$m width. This work opens a new way to control light-exciton interacting systems based on a newly developed numerically robust ab initio calculations.
Transition metal dichalcogenide heterostructures can host interlayer excitons (IXs), which consist of electrons and holes spatially separated in different layers. IXs possess permanent dipoles and have proven to offer a wealth of novel physics. We develop a discrete, random-walk model which includes annihilation and repulsion interactions among IXs. Using this model, we simulate the trapping of IXs in traps of different depths, densities, and shapes. Our results show that dipole-dipole interactions play an important role in regulating IX trapping. The effects of dipole interactions can be miti…
Interlayer excitons (IXs) in 2D semiconductors have long lifetimes and spin-valley coupled physics, with a long-standing goal of single exciton trapping for valleytronic applications. In this work, we use a nano-patterned graphene gate to create an electrostatic IX trap. We measure a unique power-dependent blue-shift of IX energy, where narrow linewidth emission exhibits discrete energy jumps. We attribute these jumps to quantized increases of the number occupancy of IXs within the trap and compare to a theoretical model to assign the lowest energy emission line to single IX recombination.

We investigate the formation of waveguides for Rydberg excitons in Cu$_\text{2}$O from cylindrical stressors as alternatives to optical traps. We show that the achievable potential depths can easily reach the meV and the trap frequencies the GHz regimes. For Rydberg excitons, we find that it is sufficient to consider only the shift of the band gap, whereas the excitonic binding energies remain almost unchanged.
Hybrid Perovskites have shown a great potential for applications in photovoltaics and light-emitting devices with high efficiency. Interaction between defect-induced trapped excitons and phonons plays an important role in understanding the emerging phenomena for such an excellent figure-of-merit. Here we demonstrate hot polarons with narrow linewidth in $\mathrm{CH_{3}NH_{3}PbBr_{3}}$ nanowires, which originate from the interaction between trapped excitons and octahedra-twist phonons. The observation of hot polarons in photoluminescence without gain methods indicates the large interaction stre…
We measured basic parameters such as the lifetime, mobility, and diffusion constant of trapped paraexcitons in cuprous oxide at very low temperatures (below 1 K) using a dilution refrigerator. To obtain these parameters, we observed the space- and time-resolved luminescence spectrum of paraexcitons in strain-induced trap potential. We extracted the lifetime of 410 ns from the measurements of the decay of the luminescence intensity. By comparing the experimental results and numerical calculations, we found that the mobility and the diffusion constant increase as the temperature of the paraexcit…
Interlayer excitons in layered materials constitute a novel platform to study many-body phenomena arising from long-range interactions between quantum particles. The ability to localise individual interlayer excitons in potential energy traps is a key step towards simulating Hubbard physics in artificial lattices. Here, we demonstrate spatial localisation of long-lived interlayer excitons in a strongly confining trap array using a WS$_{2}$/WSe$_{2}$ heterostructure on a nanopatterned substrate. We detect long-lived interlayer excitons with lifetime approaching 0.2 ms and show that their confin…
We study theoretically Rydberg excitons in one-dimensional chains of traps in Cu$_2$O coupled via the van der Waals interaction. The triplet of optically active $p$-shell states acts as an effective spin-$1$ and the interactions between the excitons are strongly spin-dependent. We predict that the system {has the} topological Haldane phase with the diluted antiferromagnetic order, long-range string correlations, and finite excitation gap. We also analyze the effect of the trap geometry and interactions anisotropy on the Rydberg exciton spin states and demonstrate that a rich spin phase diagram…
Atomically-thin transition metal dichalcogenide crystals (TMDCs) hold great promise for future semiconductor optoelectronics due to their unique electronic and optical properties. In particular, electron-hole pairs (excitons) in TMDCs are stable at room temperature and interact strongly with light. When TMDCs are embedded in an optical microcavity, the excitons can hybridise with cavity photons to form exciton polaritons (polaritons herein), which display both ultrafast velocities and strong interactions. The ability to manipulate and trap polaritons on a microchip is critical for future appli…
The creation of moiré patterns in crystalline solids is a powerful approach to manipulate their electronic properties, which are fundamentally influenced by periodic potential landscapes. In 2D materials, a moiré pattern with a superlattice potential can form by vertically stacking two layered materials with a twist and/or finite lattice constant difference. This unique approach has led to emergent electronic phenomena, including the fractal quantum Hall effect, tunable Mott insulators, and unconventional superconductivity. Furthermore, theory predicts intriguing effects on optical excitations…

Localized excitons play a vital role in the optical response of monolayers of transition metal dichalcogenides and can be exploited as single photon sources for quantum information technology. While the optical properties of such localized excitons are vastly studied, the ultrafast capture process of delocalized excitons into localized potentials is largely unexplored. We perform quantum kinetic calculations of exciton capture via acoustic and optical phonons showing that efficient capture takes place on an ultrafast time scale. The polaron formation in the low-temperature limit leads to highe…
We keep track of the orbital degree of freedom of an exciton polariton condensate, confined in an optical trap, and reveal the stochastic switching of persistent annular polariton currents in the pulse-periodic excitation regime. In an elliptic trap, the low-lying in energy polariton current states are inherent in a two-petalled density distribution and swirling phase. In the stochastic regime, the averaged over multiple excitation pulses density distribution gets homogenised in the azimuthal direction, while the weighted phase extracted from interference experiments experiences two compensatin…

Point defects, local strain or impurities can crucially impact the optical response of atomically thin two-dimensional materials as they offer trapping potentials for excitons. These trapped excitons appear in photoluminescence spectra as new resonances below the bright exciton that can even be exploited for single photon emission. While large progress has been made in deterministically introducing defects, only little is known about their impact on the optical fingerprint of 2D materials. Here, based on a microscopic approach we reveal direct signatures of localized bright excitonic states as…
In this thesis, we study two different aspects of many-particle physics. In the first part, we study the Bose-Einstein condensation of microcavity exciton-polaritons in different artificial lattices. Bose-Einstein condensation is a quantum phase transition, which allows the system to macroscopically occupy its ground state and develop coherence spontaneously. Often studied in microcavities, which are optical cavities that trap light at specific wavelengths, exciton-polaritons are a kind of quasiparticle arising from the strong coupling between quantum well excitons and cavity photons. By perio…
