We investigate a dual membrane active-passive cavity where each mechanical membrane individually quadratically coupled to passive and active cavities via two-phonon process. Due to the fact that in the quadratically coupled optomechanical system mean-field approximation fails, hence to analyze the system completely, we switch to a more generalized out of equilibrium approach, namely Keldysh Green's functional approach. We calculate transmission rate using predetermined full retarded Green's function, and then numerically examine the effect of the various parameters on the transmission coefficient and discuss the features and physics behind them in detail. On the basis of the optical responsivity we further extend our study of fast and slow light phenomenon. The results show that our proposed system can not only realize ultra-fast light/ultra-slow light under proper choice of cavity parameters, but realization of the conversion between fast and slow light and vice versa.
We report on the optical and mechanical characterization of arrays of parallel micromechanical membranes. Their optical properties are accurately determined using a combination of broadband and monochromatic illuminations and the lowest vibrational mode frequencies and mechanical quality factors are determined interferometrically. The results and techniques demonstrated are promising for investigations of collective phenomena in optomechanic…

Using Fano-type guided resonances (GRs) in photonic crystal (PhC) slab structures, we numerically and experimentally demonstrate optical reflectivity enhancement of high-Q SiNx membrane-type resonators used in membrane-in-the-middle optomechanical (OM) systems. Normal-incidence transmission and mechanical ringdown measurements of 50-nm-thick PhC membranes demonstrate GRs near 1064 nm, leading to a ~ 4\times increase in reflectivity while preserving high mechanical Q factors of up to ~ 5 \times 10^6. The results would allow improvement of membrane-in-the-middle OM systems by virtue of increased…
Exploring the fundamental quantum behaviour of optomechanical resonators is of great interest recently but requires the realization of the strong coupling regime. We study the optical photon-phonon coupling of the so-called membrane in the middle (MITM) optomechanical system. Using coupled-mode theory we find that the optomechanical coupling is proportional to the electric susceptibility of the membrane. By considering the doping atoms or spins into the membrane and driving these appropriately we induce a tunable ultra-large refractive index without absorption which enhances the optomechanical…
We present an experimental study of an optomechanical system formed by a vibrating thin semi-transparent membrane within a high-finesse optical cavity. We show that the coupling between the optical cavity modes and the vibrational modes of the membrane can be tuned by varying the membrane position and orientation. In particular we demonstrate a large quadratic dispersive optomechanical coupling in correspondence with avoided crossings between optical cavity modes weakly coupled by scattering at the membrane surface. The experimental results are well explained by a first order perturbation trea…
We introduce a passively-aligned, flexure-tuned cavity optomechanical system in which a membrane is positioned microns from one end mirror of a Fabry-Perot optical cavity. By displacing the membrane through gentle flexure of its silicon supporting frame (i.e., to ~80 m radius of curvature (ROC)), we gain access to the full range of available optomechanical couplings, finding also that the optical spectrum exhibits none of the abrupt discontinuities normally found in "membrane-in-the-middle" (MIM) systems. More aggressive flexure (3 m ROC) enables >15 microns membrane travel, milliradian tilt t…
We report an optomechanical system with two dielectric membranes inside a Fabry-Perot cavity. The cavity resonant frequencies are measured in such a two-membrane-in-the-middle system, which show an interesting band-structure-like diagram. This system exhibits great controllability on the parameters of the system. The positions and angles of each membrane can be manipulated on demand by placing two membranes inside the cavity separately. The eigenfrequencies of the vibrational modes of the membranes can also be tuned individually with piezoelectricity. This scheme could be straightforwardly ext…
We study the cavity mode frequencies of a Fabry-Pérot cavity containing two vibrating dielectric membranes. We derive the equations for the mode resonances and provide approximate analytical solutions for them as a function of the membrane positions, which act as an excellent approximation when the relative and center-of-mass position of the two membranes are much smaller than the cavity length. With these analytical solutions, one finds that extremely large optomechanical coupling of the membrane relative motion can be achieved in the limit of highly reflective membranes when the two membrane…
We describe an optomechanical device consisting of a fiber-based optical cavity containing a silicon nitiride membrane. In comparison with typical free-space cavities, the fiber-cavity's small mode size (10 μm waist, 80 μm length) allows the use of smaller, lighter membranes and increases the cavity-membrane linear coupling to 3 GHz/nm and quadratic coupling to 20 GHz/nm^2. This device is also intrinsically fiber-coupled and uses glass ferrules for passive alignment. These improvements will greatly simplify the use of optomechanical systems, particularly in cryogenic settings. At room temperat…
Optomechanical arrays made of structured flexible dielectrics are a promising system for exploring quantum and many-body optomechanical phenomena. We generalize investigations of the optomechanical properties of periodic arrays of one-dimensional scatterers in optical resonators to the case of vibrating membranes whose thickness is not necessarily small with respect to the optical wavelength of interest. The array optical transmission spectrum and its optomechanical coupling with a linear Fabry-Perot cavity field are investigated both analytically and numerically.
We propose a feasible scheme to realize all-optical photon transmission switching in a passiveactive optomechanical system, consisting of one ordinary passive cavity, one active cavity and one common movable membrane oscillator of perfect reflection, driven by two strong control fields and two weak probe fields symmetrically. By means of the gain effect of the active cavity, many novel and valuable phenomena arise, such as frequency-independent perfect reflection (FIPR) first proposed in this paper, adjustable photon bidirectional transmission, phase-dependent non-reciprocity and so on. The re…
We present an experimental study of dynamical back-action cooling of the fundamental vibrational mode of a thin semitransparent membrane placed within a high-finesse optical cavity. We study how the radiation pressure interaction modifies the mechanical response of the vibrational mode, and the experimental results are in agreement with a Langevin equation description of the coupled dynamics. The experiments are carried out in the resolved sideband regime, and we have observed cooling by a factor 350 We have also observed the mechanical frequency shift associated with the quadratic term in the…
A theoretical consideration of the so-called "membrane-in-the-middle" optomechanical cavity revealed that it undergoes a spontaneous symmetry breaking as a function of the transparency of the membrane. Such typical features of this phenomenon as a square-root development of the order parameter and divergency of the critical susceptibility were identified. In the contract to classical spontaneous-symmetry-breaking systems of ferromagnets and ferroelectrics, in the considered system, this divergency remains, due to interference effects, an "internal" property of the system, which does not reveal…
We predict that illumination by a plane electromagnetic wave of optically resonant membranes, such as graphene or monolayers of transition metal dichalcogenides, directly affects their mechanical tension. The induced optomechanical tension is anisotropic and, depending on the spectral detuning from the resonance, can be both positive and negative. In the latter case, it can overcome the bending rigidity of the membrane leading to transition to the crumpled phase. The instability caused by optomechanical heating of flexural vibrations is also considered.
Flexible control of photons and phonons in silicon nanophotonic waveguides is a key feature for emerging applications in communications, sensing and quantum technologies. Strong phonon leakage towards the silica under-cladding hampers optomechanical interactions in silicon-on-insulator. This limitation has been circumvented by totally or partially removing the silica under-cladding to form pedestal or silicon membrane waveguides. Remarkable optomechanical interactions have been demonstrated in silicon using pedestal strips, membrane ribs, and photonic/phononic crystal membrane waveguides. Stil…
We present here an optomechanical system fabricated with novel stress management techniques that allow us to suspend an ultrathin defect-free silicon photonic-crystal membrane above a Silicon-on-Insulator (SOI) substrate with a gap that is tunable to below 200 nm. Our devices are able to generate strong attractive and repulsive optical forces over a large surface area with simple in- and outcoupling and feature the strongest repulsive optomechanical coupling in any geometry to date (gOM/2π ~ -65 GHz/nm). The interplay between the optomechanical and photo-thermal-mechanical dynamics is explored…
We demonstrate the analogue of electromagnetically induced transparency in a room temperature cavity optomechanics setup formed by a thin semitransparent membrane within a Fabry-Pérot cavity. Due to destructive interference, a weak probe field is completely reflected by the cavity when the pump beam is resonant with the motional red sideband of the cavity. Under this condition we infer a significant slowing down of light of hundreds of microseconds, which is easily tuned by shifting the membrane along the cavity axis. We also observe the associated phenomenon of electromagnetically induced amp…
In cavity optomechanics, nonlinear interactions between an optical field and a mechanical resonator mode enable a variety of unique effects in classical and quantum measurement and information processing. Here, we describe nonlinear optomechanical coupling in the membrane-in-the-middle (MIM) setup in a way that allows direct comparison to the intrinsic optomechanical nonlinearity in a standard, single-cavity optomechanical system. We find that the enhancement of nonlinear optomechanical coupling in the MIM system as predicted by Ludwig et al. arXiv:1202.0532 is limited to the degree of sideban…
We create squeezed light by exploiting the quantum nature of the mechanical interaction between laser light and a membrane mechanical resonator embedded in an optical cavity. The radiation pressure shot noise (fluctuating optical force from quantum laser amplitude noise) induces resonator motion well above that of thermally driven motion. This motion imprints a phase shift on the laser light, hence correlating the amplitude and phase noise, a consequence of which is optical squeezing. We experimentally demonstrate strong and continuous optomechanical squeezing of 1.7 +/- 0.2 dB below the shot …
Photonic crystal (PhC) membranes patterned with sub-wavelength periods offer a unique combination of high reflectivity, low mass, and high mechanical quality factor. We demonstrate a PhC membrane that we use as one mirror of a Fabry-Perot cavity with finesse as high as $F=35,000(500)$, corresponding to a record high PhC reflectivity of $R=0.999835(6)$. The fundamental mechanical frequency is 426 kHz, more than twice the optical linewidth, placing it firmly in the resolved-sideband regime. The mechanical quality factor in vacuum is $Q=1.1(1)\times 10^6$, allowing us to achieve values of the sin…

We propose an optomechanical structure consisting of a photonic-crystal (holey) membrane suspended above a layered silicon-on-insulator substrate in which resonant bonding/antibonding optical forces created by externally incident light from above enable all-optical control and actuation of stiction effects induced by the Casimir force. In this way, one can control how the Casimir force is expressed in the mechanical dynamics of the membrane, not by changing the Casimir force directly but by optically modifying the geometry and counteracting the mechanical spring constant to bring the system in…
We present the optical optimization of an optomechanical device based on a suspended InP membrane patterned with a 2D near-wavelength grating (NWG) based on a 2D photonic-crystal geometry. We first identify by numerical simulation a set of geometrical parameters providing a reflectivity higher than 99.8 % over a 50-nm span. We then study the limitations induced by the finite value of the optical waist and lateral size of the NWG pattern using different numerical approaches. The NWG grating, pierced in a suspended InP 265 nm-thick membrane, is used to form a compact microcavity involving the su…
Optomechanical systems are a promising candidate for the implementation of quantum interfaces for storing and redistributing quantum information. Here we focus on the case of a high-finesse optical cavity with a thin vibrating semitransparent membrane in the middle. We show that robust and stationary optomechanical entanglement could be achieved in the system, even in the presence of nonnegligible optical absorption in the membrane. We also present some preliminary experimental data showing radiation-pressure induced optical bistability.
Optomechanical accelerometers promise quantum-limited readout, high detection bandwidth, self-calibration, and radiation pressure stabilization. We present a simple, scalable platform that enables these benefits with nano-$g$ sensitivity at acoustic frequencies, based on a pair of vertically integrated Si$_3$N$_4$ membranes with different stiffnesses, forming an optical cavity. As a demonstration, we integrate an ultrahigh-Q ($>10^7$), millimeter-scale Si$_3$N$_4$ trampoline membrane above an unpatterned membrane on the same Si chip, forming a finesse $\mathcal{F}\approx2$ cavity. Using direct…
We study the quantum dynamics of the cavity optomechanical system formed by a Fabry-Perot cavity with a thin vibrating membrane at its center. We first derive the general multimode Hamiltonian describing the radiation pressure interaction between the cavity modes and the vibrational modes of the membrane. We then restrict the analysis to the standard case of a single cavity mode interacting with a single mechanical resonator and we determine to what extent optical absorption by the membrane hinder reaching a quantum regime for the cavity-membrane system. We show that membrane absorption does n…
Multi-element cavity optomechanics constitutes a direction to observe novel effects with mechanical resonators. Several exciting ideas include superradiance, increased optomechanical coupling, and quantum effects between distinct mechanical modes among others. Realizing these experiments has so far been difficult, because of the need for extremely precise positioning of the elements relative to one another due to the high-reflectivity required for each element. Here we overcome this challenge and present the fabrication of monolithic arrays of two highly reflective mechanical resonators in a s…
The recent demonstration of cooling of a macroscopic silicon nitride membrane based on dissipative coupling makes dissipatively coupled optomechanical systems as promising candidates for squeezing. We theoretically show that such a system in a cavity on resonance can yield good squeezing which is comparable to that produced by dispersive coupling. We also report the squeezing resulting from the combined effects of dispersive and dissipative couplings and thus the device can be operated in one regime or the other. We derive the maximal frequency and quadrature angles to observe squeezing for gi…
We theoretically analyze antibunching of the phonon field in an optomechanical oscillator employ- ing the membrane-in-the-middle geometry. More specifically, a single-mode mechanical oscillator is quadratically coupled to a single-mode cavity field in the regime in which the cavity dissipation is a dominant source of damping, and adiabatic elimination of the cavity field leads to an effective cubic nonlinearity for the mechanics. We show analytically in the weak coupling regime that the mechan- ics displays a chaotic phonon field for small optomechanical cooperativity, whereas an antibunched s…
We realise a simple and robust optomechanical system with a multitude of long-lived ($Q>10^7$) mechanical modes in a phononic-bandgap shielded membrane resonator. An optical mode of a compact Fabry-Perot resonator detects these modes' motion with a measurement rate ($96~\mathrm{kHz}$) that exceeds the mechanical decoherence rates already at moderate cryogenic temperatures ($10\,\mathrm{K}$). Reaching this quantum regime entails, i.~a., quantum measurement backaction exceeding thermal forces, and thus detectable optomechanical quantum correlations. In particular, we observe ponderomotive squeez…
We demonstrate the use of a compound optical cavity as linear displacement detector, by measuring the thermal motion of a silicon nitride suspended membrane acting as the external mirror of a near-infrared Littrow laser diode. Fluctuations in the laser optical power induced by the membrane vibrations are collected by a photodiode integrated within the laser, and then measured with a spectrum analyzer. The dynamics of the membrane driven by a piezoelectric actuator is investigated as a function of air pressure and actuator displacement in a homodyne configuration. The high Q-factor ($\sim 3.4\c…
Quantum optomechanics offers the potential to investigate quantum effects in macroscopic quantum systems in extremely well controlled experiments. In this paper we discuss one such situation, the dynamic stabilization of a mechanical system such as an inverted pendulum. The specific example that we study is a "membrane in the middle" mechanical oscillator coupled to a cavity field via a quadratic optomechanical interaction, with cavity damping the dominant source of dissipation. We show that the mechanical oscillator can be dynamically stabilized by a temporal modulation of the radiation press…

We propose a realistic system with separated optical and mechanical degrees of freedom, in which a high-mechanical-quality silicon nitride membrane is placed upon a high-optical-quality whispering gallery microcavity. The strongly enhanced linear optomechanical coupling, together with simultaneously low optical and mechanical losses in the present system, results in a remarkable single-photon cooperativity exceeding 300. This unprecedented cooperativity in the optomechanical system enables optical nonlinearity at low light intensities and holds great potential in generating, storing, and imple…
We study the optical cooling of the resonator mirror in a cavity-optomechanical system that contains an optical gain medium. We find that the optical damping rate is vanishingly small for an incoherently pumped laser above threshold. In the presence of an external coherent drive however, the optical damping rate can be enhanced substantially with respect to that of a passive cavity. We show that the strength of the incoherent pump provides a conduit to tune the damping rate and the minimum attainable phonon number with the same radiation pressure force, and the latter can be lowered from that …
We experimentally study a fiber-based optical ring cavity integrated with a mechanical resonator mirror and an optical amplifier. The device exhibits a variety of intriguing nonlinear effects including synchronization and self-excited oscillation. Passively generated optical pulses are observed when the frequency of the optical ring cavity is tuned very close to the mechanical frequency of the suspended mirror. The optical power at the threshold of this process of mechanical mode locking is found to be related to quantum noise of the optical amplifier.
We demonstrate a cryogenic optomechanical system comprising a flexible Si3N4 membrane placed at the center of a free-space optical cavity in a 400 mK cryogenic environment. We observe a mechanical quality factor Q > 4 x 10^6 for the 261-kHz fundamental drum-head mode of the membrane, and a cavity resonance halfwidth of 60 kHz. The optomechanical system therefore operates in the resolved sideband limit. We monitor the membrane's thermal motion using a heterodyne optical circuit capable of simultaneously measuring both of the mechanical sidebands, and find that the observed optical spring and da…
Macroscopic mechanical objects and electromagnetic degrees of freedom couple to each other via radiation pressure. Optomechanical systems with sufficiently strong coupling are predicted to exhibit quantum effects and are a topic of considerable interest. Devices reaching this regime would offer new types of control of the quantum state of both light and matter and would provide a new arena in which to explore the boundary between quantum and classical physics. Experiments to date have achieved sufficient optomechanical coupling to laser-cool mechanical devices but have not yet reached the quan…
Cavity-optomechanics enables photon-phonon interaction and correlations by harnessing the radiation-pressure force. Here, we realize a ``cavity-in-a-membrane'' optomechanical architecture which allows detection of the motion of lithographically-defined, ultrathin membranes via an integrated optical cavity. Using a dissipative filtering method, we are able to eliminate the probe light in situ and observe photon-phonon correlations associated with the low-frequency membrane mechanical mode. The developed method is generally applicable for study of low-frequency light scattering processes where c…
By harnessing the resonant nature of localized electromagnetic modes in a nanostructured silicon membrane, an all-dielectric metamaterial can act as nonlinear medium at optical telecommunications wavelengths. We show that such metamaterials provide extremely large optomechanical nonlinearities, operating at intensities of only a few μW per unit cell and modulation frequencies as high as 152 MHz, thereby offering a path to fast, compact and energy efficient all-optical metadevices.
The temperature dependence of the asymmetry between Stokes and anti-Stokes Raman scattering can be exploited for self-calibrating, optically-based thermometry. In the context of cavity optomechanics, we observe the cavity-enhanced scattering of light interacting with the standing-wave drumhead modes of a silicon nitride membrane mechanical resonator. The ratio of the amplitude of Stokes to anti-Stokes scattered light is used to measure temperatures of optically-cooled mechanical modes down to the level of a few vibrational quanta. We demonstrate that the Raman-ratio technique is able to measur…
A transparent material exhibits ultra-fast optical nonlinearity and is subject to optical pressure if irradiated by a laser beam. However, the effect of nonlinearity on optical pressure is often overlooked, even if a nonlinear optical pressure may be potentially employed in many applications, as optical manipulation, biophysics, cavity optomechanics, quantum optics, optical tractors, and is relevant in fundamental problems as the Abraham-Minkoswky dilemma, or the Casimir effect. Here we show that an ultra-fast nonlinear polarization gives indeed a contribution to the optical pressure that also…
Studying the interplay between multiple coupled mechanical resonators is a promising new direction in the field of optomechanics. Understanding the dynamics of the interaction can lead to rich new effects, such as enhanced coupling and multi-body physics. In particular, multi-resonator optomechanical systems allow for distinct dynamical effects due to the optical cavity coherently coupling mechanical resonators. Here, we study the mechanical response of two SiN membranes and a single optical mode, and find that the cavity induces a time delay between the local and cavity-transduced thermal noi…
We theoretically study a strongly-driven optomechanical system which consists of a passive optical cavity and an active mechanical resonator. When the optomechanical coupling strength is varied, phase transitions, which are similar those observed in $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric systems, are observed. We show that the optical transmission can be controlled by changing the gain of the mechanical resonator and loss of the optical cavity mode. Especially, we find that: (i) for balanced gain and loss, optical amplification and absorption can be tuned by changing the optomechanical coupling strength thr…

Optical cavities containing a negative dispersion medium have been proposed as a means of improving the sensitivity of laser interferometric gravitational wave (GW) detectors through the creation of white light signal recycling cavities. Here we classically demonstrate that negative dispersion can be realized using an optomechanical cavity pumped by a blue detuned doublet. We used an 85mm cavity with an intra-cavity silicon nitride membrane. Tunable negative dispersion is demonstrated, with a phase derivative $dφ/df$ from $-0.14$ Deg$\cdot$Hz$^{-1}$ to $-4.2\times10^{-3}$ Deg$\cdot$Hz$^{-1}$.
