The next-to-leading order (NLO) ($\mathcal{O}(α_s^3)$) corrections for gluon fragmentation functions to a heavy quark-antiquark pair in ${^{3}\hspace{-0.6mm}P_{J}^{[1,8]}}$ states are calculated within the NRQCD factorization. We use integration-by-parts reduction and differential equations to semi-analytically calculate fragmentation functions in full-QCD, and find that infrared divergences can be absorbed by the NRQCD long distance matrix elements. Thus, the NRQCD factorization conjecture is verified at two-loop level via a physical process, which is free of artificial ultraviolet divergences. Through matching procedure, infrared-safe short distance coefficients and $\mathcal{O}(α_s^2)$ perturbative NRQCD matrix elements $\langle{\mathcal O}^{{^{3}\hspace{-0.6mm}P_{J}^{[1,8]}}}({^{3}\hspace{-0.6mm}S_{1}^{[8]}})\rangle_{\mathrm{NLO}}$ are obtained simultaneously. The NLO short distance coefficients are found to have significant corrections comparing with the LO ones.
We calculate the NLO corrections for the gluon fragmentation functions to a heavy quark-antiquark pair in ${^{1}\hspace{-0.6mm}S_{0}^{[1]}}$ or ${^{1}\hspace{-0.6mm}S_{0}^{[8]}}$ state within NRQCD factorization. We use integration-by-parts reduction to reduce the original expression to simpler master integrals (MIs), and then set up differential equations for these MIs. After calculating the boundary conditions, MIs can be obtained by solving the differential equations numerically. Our results are expressed in terms of asymptotic expansions at singular points of $z$ (light-cone momentum fract…
The universal fragmentation functions of gluon into the flavored quarkonia $B_c$ and (polarized) $B_c^*$ are computed within NRQCD factorization framework, at the lowest order in velocity expansion and strong coupling constant. It is mandatory to invoke the DGLAP renormalization program to render the NRQCD short-distance coefficients UV finite in a point-wise manner. The calculation is facilitated with the sector decomposition method, with the final results presented with high numerical accuracy. This knowledge is useful to enrich our understanding toward the large-$p_T$ behavior of $B_c^{(*)}…
We study the transverse-momentum spectrum of quarkonium production from single light-parton fragmentation mechanism. In the case of semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering, we observe that there are two possible initiating processes, namely photon-gluon fusion and light-quark fragmentation. For the second case we derive the factorization theorem, which involves a new hadronic quantity: the quarkonium transverse-momentum-dependent fragmentation functions in NRQCD. We calculate their matching onto the non-perturbative long distance matrix elements at the lowest order in the strong-coupling cons…
We discuss heavy quarkonium production through parton fragmentation, including a review of arguments for the factorization of high-p_T particles into fragmentation functions for hadronic initial states. We investigate the further factorization of fragmentation functions in the NRQCD formalism, and argue that this requires a modification of NRQCD octet production matrix elements to include nonabelian phases, which makes them gauge invariant. We describe the calculation of uncanceled infrared divergences in fragmentation functions that must be factorized at NNLO, and verify that they are absorbe…
We discuss factorization in heavy quarkonium production in high energy collisions using NRQCD. Infrared divergences at NNLO are not matched by conventional NRQCD matrix elements. However, we show that gauge invariance and factorization require that conventional NRQCD production matrix elements be modified to include Wilson lines or non-abelian gauge links. With this modification NRQCD factorization for heavy quarkonium production is restored at NNLO.
Study of the polarized heavy quarkonium production in recently proposed QCD factorization formalism requires knowledge of a large number of input fragmentation functions (FFs) from a single parton or a heavy quark-antiquark pair to a polarized heavy quarkonium. In this paper, we calculate these FFs at the input scale in terms of nonrelativistic QCD (NRQCD) factorization. We derive all relevant polarized NRQCD long-distance matrix elements based symmetries and propose a self-consistent scheme to define them in arbitrary $d$ dimensions. We then calculate polarized input FFs contributed from all …
We bring evidence that the recently discovered property of natural stability of the high-energy resummation is directly connected to the fragmentation mechanism of heavy hadrons. As a phenomenological support, we provide predictions for differential distributions sensitive to heavy-hadron tags, calculated at the next-to-leading logarithmic level of the hybrid high-energy/collinear factorization (NLL/NLO), as implemented in the JETHAD multimodular code. We show that the stabilizing mechanism is encoded in gluon channels of both heavy-flavor collinear fragmentation functions extracted from data …
We compute the relativistic corrections to the color-singlet contribution to gluon fragmentation into a J/psi at relative order v^4, making use of the nonrelativistic QCD (NRQCD) factorization approach. The corresponding full-QCD process exhibits infrared divergences that manifest themselves as single and double poles in epsilon in 4-2epsilon dimensions. We isolate the infrared-divergent contributions and treat them analytically. In the matching of full QCD to NRQCD, the pole contributions are absorbed into long-distance NRQCD matrix elements. The renormalizations of the ultraviolet divergence…
We study the fragmentation function of the gluon to color-octet $^3S_1$ heavy quark-antiquark pair using the soft gluon factorization (SGF) approach, which expresses the fragmentation function in a form of perturbative short-distance hard part convoluted with one-dimensional color-octet $^3S_1$ soft gluon distribution (SGD). The short distance hard part is calculated to next-to-leading order in $α_s$ and a renormalization group equation for the SGD is derived. By solving the renormalization group equation, threshold logarithms are resummed to all orders in perturbation theory. The comparison w…
Recently, a new perturbative QCD factorization formalism for heavy quarkonium production at a large transverse momentum was proposed. Phenomenological application of this new approach relies on our knowledge of a large number of universal fragmentation functions (FFs) at an input factorization scale $μ_0\gtrsim 2m_Q$ with heavy quark mass $m_Q$, which are nonperturbative, and in principle, should be extracted from data. With heavy quark mass $m_Q\gg Λ_{\rm QCD}$, we calculate these input FFs in terms of non-relativistic QCD (NRQCD) factorization. In a companion paper, we calculated these input…
In this paper, we compute the relativistic corrections to the fragmentation functions (FFs) of a heavy quark to $B_c$ and $B_c^*$ within the framework of non-relativistic QCD (NRQCD) factorization. The non-singlet and singlet DGLAP evolution are also presented.
The approach of nonrelativistic QCD(NRQCD) factorization was proposed to study inclusive production of a quarkonium. It is widely used and successful. However, a recent study of gluon fragmentation into a quarkonium at two-loop level shows that the factorization is broken. It is suggested that the color-octet NRQCD matrix elements should be modified by adding a gauge link to restore the factorization. The modified matrix elements may have extra soft-divergences at one-loop level which the unmodified can not have, and this can lead to a violation of the universality of these matrix elements. In…
We explore the role of soft gluon exchange in heavy quarkonium production at large transverse momentum. We find uncanceled infrared poles at NNLO that are not matched by conventional NRQCD matrix elements. We show, however, that gauge invariance and factorization require that conventional NRQCD production operators be modified to include nonabelian phases or Wilson lines. With appropriately modified operators, factorization is restored at NNLO. We also argue that, in the absence of special cancellations, infrared poles at yet higher orders may require the inclusion of additional nonlocal opera…
Following the operator definition of the fragmentation function developed by Collins and Soper, we compute the gluon-to-$h_c$ fragmentation function at the lowest order in the velocity expansion in NRQCD factorization approach. Utilizing some modern technique developed in the area of multi-loop calculation, we are able to analytically deduce the infrared-finite color-singlet short-distance coefficient associated with the fragmentation function. The fragmentation probability for gluon into $h_c$ is estimated to be order $10^{-6}$.
Within NRQCD factorization framework, in this work we compute, at the lowest order in velocity expansion, the next-to-leading-order (NLO) perturbative corrections to the short-distance coefficients associated with heavy quark fragmentation into the ${}^1S_0^{(1,8)}$ components of a heavy quarkonium. Starting from the Collins and Soper's operator definition of the quark fragmentation function, we apply the sector decomposition method to facilitate the numerical manipulation. It is found that the NLO QCD corrections have a significant impact.
Within the NRQCD factorization framework, we compute the next-to-leading-order QCD corrections to the gluon fragmentation into the ${}^1S_0^{(1,8)}$ Fock components of a quarkonium, at the lowest order in velocity expansion. We follow the operator definition of the fragmentation function advanced by Collins and Soper. The key technique underpinning our calculation is the sector decomposition method widely used in the area of multi-loop computation. It is found that the NLO QCD corrections have significant effects, and qualitatively modify the profiles of the corresponding leading-order fragmen…
Inspired by the recent measurements of the $η_c$ meson production at LHC, we investigate the relativistic correction effect for the fragmentation function of the gluon into $η_c$, which constitutes the crucial nonperturbative elements to understand $η_c$ production at high $p_T$. Employing three distinct methods, we calculate the leading relativistic correction to the $g\toη_c$ fragmentation function in the NRQCD factorization framework, as well as verify the existing NLO result for the $c\to η_c$ fragmentation function. We also study the evolution behavior of these fragmentation functions wit…
Based on the factorization formalism of nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics (NRQCD), we calculate the production cross section for the charmonium and the bottomonium produced by the hard photoproduction processes and fragmentation processes in relativistic heavy ion collisions. It is shown that the existing experimental data on heavy quarkonium production at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) can be described in the framework of the NRQCD formalism, and the phenomenological values of matrix elements for color-singlet and color-octet components give the main contribution. The numerical results …
I review the current status of quarkonium production theory based on the non-relativistic QCD factorization formalism (NRQCD). While this theory describes much of the world's data on J/ψand Υproduction, there are still outstanding problems, most notably the polarization of quarkonia at large p_T in hadron colliders. In this talk we will present new tests of NRQCD involving the distribution of quarkonia within jets. The distribution of hadrons within jets is determined by nonperturbative functions called fragmenting jet functions (FJFs). FJFs are convolutions of fragmentation functions, evolved…
We present a calculation of the leading order QCD fragmentation functions for gluons to split into spin-triplet D-wave quarkonia. We apply them to evaluate the gluon fragmentation contributions to inclusive ^3D_J quarkonium production at large transverse momentum processes like the Tevatron and find that the D-wave quarkonia, especially the charmonium 2^{--} state, could be observed through color-octet mechanism with present luminosity. Since there are distinctively large gaps between the contributions of two different (i.e, color-singlet and color-octet) quarkonium production mechanisms, our …
A QCD factorization formalism was recently proposed for evaluating heavy quarkonium production at large $p_T$ at collider energies. With systematically calculated short-distance partonic hard parts and evolution kernels of fragmentation functions (FFs), the predictive power of this factorization approach relies on our knowledge of a large number of universal FFs at an input factorization scale $μ_0\gtrsim 2m_Q$ with heavy quark mass $m_Q$. With the large heavy quark mass, the relative motion of the heavy quark pair inside a heavy quarkonium is effectively non-relativistic. We evaluate these un…
The gluon fragmentation function of $g \to h_c$ at leading order of strong coupling constant $α_s$ and typical velocity $v$ is calculated in the framework of NRQCD, of which the contributions from both color-singlet and -octet processes are taken into account and hence the result is infrared safe. It is found that the fragmentation probability of a high energy virtual gluon to split into $h_c$ is about $7.1\times 10^{-7}$. The analytic fragmentation function presented in this work can be employed to the study of $h_c$ production in large transverse momentum at hadron colliders, such as Large H…
The p_T-spectra for direct J/psi and psi' in hadroproduction at Tevatron energy have been calculated based on NRQCD formalism and fragmentation approximation in the collinear parton model and k_T-factorization approach. We have described the CDF data and obtained a good agreement between the predictions obtained in the parton model and k_T-factorization approach. We performed the calculations using the relevant leading order in alpha_s hard amplitudes and the equal values of the color-octet long-distance matrix elements for the both models.
We use the NRQCD factorization formalism to calculate the relativistic corrections to the fragmentation function for a gluon fragmenting into a spin-triplet S-wave heavy quarkonium. We make use of the gauge-invariant formulation of the fragmentation function of Collins and Soper. The color-octet contribution receives a large, negative relativistic correction, while the color-singlet contribution receives a large, positive relativistic correction. The considerable decrease in the color-octet contribution requires a corresponding increase in the phenomenological value of the leading color-octet …
We investigate the effects of colour-octet contributions to the radiative $Υ$ decay within the Bodwin, Braaten and Lepage NRQCD factorization framework. Photons coming both from the coupling to hard processes (`direct') and by collinear emission from light quarks (`fragmentation') are consistently included at next-to-leading order (NLO) in $α_s$. An estimate for the non-perturbative matrix elements which enter in the final result is then obtained. By comparing the NRQCD prediction at NLO for total decay rates with the experimental data, it is found that the non-perturbative parameters must be …
The $X(6900)$ resonance, very recently discovered in the double-$J/ψ$ channel at LHCb experiment, has spurred intensive interest in unravelling the nature of the fully charmed tetraquark state. The aim of this paper is to present a model-independent theoretical framework to study the inclusive production of this novel species of exotic hadrons, the resonances composed of four heavy quark (commonly referred to as $T_{4c}$), at large $p_T$ in hadron collision experiments. Appealing to asymptotic freedom and the fact $m_c\gg Λ_{\rm QCD}$, we propose that the nonpertubative yet universal gluon-to-…
Applications of HQET and NRQCD to fragmentation are briefly reviewed. The special role of the b-quark in applications of heavy quark symmetry is discussed. Predictions of HQET for semileptonic B decays to excited charmed mesons are considered.
J/psi production in top quark rare decays is investigated under the framework of NRQCD factorization formalism. Various production channels are studied, and we find that the contributions from the color-singlet quark fragmentation and the color-octet gluon fragmentation are both over 3 orders larger than that from the leading order color-singlet process. The numerical results show that the branching ratio B(t -> c + J/psi + X) is about 10^{-14} in the SM, and 10^{-10} in the MSSM.
I compute the leading color-octet contributions to the process $γ+ p \to J/ψ+ γ(+ X)$ within the non-relativistic QCD (NRQCD) factorization formalism. In the color-singlet model, $J/ψ+ γ$ can only be produced when the photon interacts through its structure function, while the color-octet mechanism allows for production of $J/ψ+ γ$ via direct photon-gluon fusion. Resolved photon processes can be easily be distinguished from direct photon processes by examining the fraction of the incident photon energy carried away by the $J/ψ$ in the event. Therefore, this process provides a conclusive test of…
Gluon fragmentation represents the dominant source of high energy prompt quarkonia at hadron colliders. Fragmentation approximations break down, however, when a quarkonium's transverse momentum becomes comparable to its mass. In this paper, we identify a large class of color-octet diagrams that mediate quarkonia production at all energies and reduce to the dominant set of gluon fragmentation graphs in the high $p_\perp$ limit. They contribute to quarkonia differential cross sections at the same order as color-singlet diagrams and bring theoretical predictions for Upsilon and Psi production at …
I study the direct hadroproduction of Jψassociated with a charm-quark pair at leading order in alpha_S and v in NRQCD. This process provides an interesting signature that could be studied at the Tevatron. I consider both colour-singlet and colour-octet transitions. I compare our results to the fragmentation approximation and discuss the associated experimental signatures.
We present a novel study on the inclusive production of a heavy quarkonium ($J/ψ$ or $Υ$), in association with a light-flavored jet, as a test field of the high-energy QCD dynamics. The large transverse momenta at which the two final-state objects are detected permits us to perform an analysis in the spirit of the variable-flavor number scheme (VFNS), in which the cross section for the hadroproduction of a light parton is convoluted with a perturbative fragmentation function that describes the transition from a light quark to a heavy hadron. The quarkonium collinear fragmentation function is b…
We present a new calculation, in the nonrelativistic QCD (NRQCD) factorization formalism, of the relativistic corrections to the double-charmonium cross section sigma[e+ e- -> J/psi+eta_c] at the energy of the Belle and BABAR experiments. In comparison with previous work, our calculation contains several refinements. These include the use of the improved results for the nonperturbative NRQCD matrix elements, the resummation of a class of relativistic corrections, the use of the vector-meson-dominance method to calculate the fragmentation contribution to the pure QED amplitude, the inclusion of…

The exclusive production of pairs of vector mesons with J^{PC} = 1^{--} in e^+ e^- collisions can proceed through e^+ e^- annihilation into two virtual photons. At energies much greater than the meson masses, the cross section is dominated by the independent fragmentation of the virtual photons into the vector mesons. The fragmentation approximation is used to calculate the cross sections and angular distributions for pairs of vector mesons that can be produced at the B factories. The predicted cross sections for rho^0 + rho^0 and rho^0 + phi production agree with recent measurements by the Ba…
We study heavy quarkonium production associated with gluons in $\rm e^+e^-$ annihilation as an illustration of the perturbative QCD (pQCD) factorization approach, which incorporates the first nonleading power in the energy of the produced heavy quark pair. We show how the renormalization of the four-quark operators that define the heavy quark pair fragmentation functions using dimensional regularization induces "evanescent" operators that are absent in four dimensions. We derive closed forms for short-distance coefficients for quark pair production to next-to-leading order ($α_s^2$) in the rel…
We calculate the cross sections for the direct hadroproduction of J/psi and Upsilon associated with a heavy-quark pair of the same flavour at leading order in alpha_S and v in NRQCD. These processes provide an interesting signature that could be studied at the Tevatron and the LHC and also constitute a gauge-invariant subset of the NLO corrections to the inclusive hadroproduction of J/psi and Upsilon. We find that the fragmentation approximation commonly used to evaluate the contribution of these processes to the inclusive quarkonium production sizeably underestimates the exact calculation in …
This is a brief overview of the spin physics opportunities at a high energy, high luminosity, polarized Electron-Ion Collider (EIC). It covers measurements of electroweak polarized structure functions, quark and gluon PDFs, TMDs, GPDs and GTMDs. Exploiting the many possible final states allows to probe various spin effects. Open and bound heavy quark production can be used to probe gluon TMDs, but also color-octet NRQCD long distance matrix elements. Spin-dependent fragmentation functions can be used too, but are also interesting in themselves. Especially for studies of the small-$x$ and the h…
