Within NRQCD factorization framework, in this work we compute, at the lowest order in velocity expansion, the next-to-leading-order (NLO) perturbative corrections to the short-distance coefficients associated with heavy quark fragmentation into the ${}^1S_0^{(1,8)}$ components of a heavy quarkonium. Starting from the Collins and Soper's operator definition of the quark fragmentation function, we apply the sector decomposition method to facilitate the numerical manipulation. It is found that the NLO QCD corrections have a significant impact.
Gluon fragmentation to heavy $J^{PC}=2^{-+}$ quarkonia is studied herein. We compute these D-wave states' polarized fragmentation functions and find that they are enhanced by large numerical prefactors. The prospects for detecting the lowest lying $^1D_2$ charmonium state at the Tevatron are discussed.
We present a calculation of the leading order QCD fragmentation functions for gluons to split into spin-triplet D-wave quarkonia. We apply them to evaluate the gluon fragmentation contributions to inclusive ^3D_J quarkonium production at large transverse momentum processes like the Tevatron and find that the D-wave quarkonia, especially the charmonium 2^{--} state, could be observed through color-octet mechanism with present luminosity. Since there are distinctively large gaps between the contributions of two different (i.e, color-singlet and color-octet) quarkonium production mechanisms, our …
Heavy quarkonium production is a powerful implement to study the strong interaction dynamics and QCD theory. Fragmentation is the dominant production mechanism for heavy quarkonia with large transverse momentum. With the large heavy quark mass, the relative motion of the heavy quark pair inside a heavy quarkonium is effectively nonrelativistic and it is also well-known that their fragmentation functions can be calculated in the perturbative QCD framework. Here, we analytically calculate the process-independent fragmentation functions for a gluon to split into the spin-singlet and -triplet $S$-…
We investigate the effect of Fermi motion on the direct fragmentation of the $J/ψ$ and $Υ$ states employing a light-cone wave function. Consistent with such a wave function we set up the kinematics of a heavy quark fragmenting into a quarkonia such that the Fermi motion of the constituents split into longitudinal as well as transverse direction and thus calculate the fragmentation functions for these states. In the framework of our investigation, we estimate that the fragmentation probabilities of $J/ψ$ and $Υ$ may increase at least up to 14 percent when including this degree of freedom.
Within the NRQCD factorization framework, we compute the next-to-leading-order QCD corrections to the gluon fragmentation into the ${}^1S_0^{(1,8)}$ Fock components of a quarkonium, at the lowest order in velocity expansion. We follow the operator definition of the fragmentation function advanced by Collins and Soper. The key technique underpinning our calculation is the sector decomposition method widely used in the area of multi-loop computation. It is found that the NLO QCD corrections have significant effects, and qualitatively modify the profiles of the corresponding leading-order fragmen…
In the paper, we derive the next-to-leading order (NLO) fragmentation function for a heavy quark, either charm or bottom, into a heavy quarkonium $J/Ψ$ or $Υ$. The ultra-violet divergences in the real corrections are removed through the operator renormalization, which is performed under the modified minimal subtraction scheme. We then obtain the NLO fragmentation function at an initial factorization scale, e.g. $μ_{F}=3 m_c$ for $c\to J/Ψ$ and $μ_{F}=3m_b$ for $b\to Υ$, which can be evolved to any scale via the use of Dokshitzer-Gribov-Lipatov-Altarelli-Parisi equation. As an initial applicati…
Gluon fragmentation represents the dominant source of high energy prompt quarkonia at hadron colliders. Fragmentation approximations break down, however, when a quarkonium's transverse momentum becomes comparable to its mass. In this paper, we identify a large class of color-octet diagrams that mediate quarkonia production at all energies and reduce to the dominant set of gluon fragmentation graphs in the high $p_\perp$ limit. They contribute to quarkonia differential cross sections at the same order as color-singlet diagrams and bring theoretical predictions for Upsilon and Psi production at …
We calculate the NLO corrections for the gluon fragmentation functions to a heavy quark-antiquark pair in ${^{1}\hspace{-0.6mm}S_{0}^{[1]}}$ or ${^{1}\hspace{-0.6mm}S_{0}^{[8]}}$ state within NRQCD factorization. We use integration-by-parts reduction to reduce the original expression to simpler master integrals (MIs), and then set up differential equations for these MIs. After calculating the boundary conditions, MIs can be obtained by solving the differential equations numerically. Our results are expressed in terms of asymptotic expansions at singular points of $z$ (light-cone momentum fract…
We compute the Noncommutative QCD (NCQCD) contributions to the three gluon decay modes of heavy quarkonia. For triplet quarkonia (ortho-quarkonia), the NCQCD correction to the QCD three gluon decay mode, like the standard model contribution, is infrared finite. In the case of singlet quarkonia (para-quarkonia), whose QCD three gluon decay mode has infrared singularities which are removed using one-loop corrections to the two gluon mode, we find that NCQCD contribution is also infrared finite. The calculations are performed in the weak binding limit and do not require the introduction of additi…
Quarkonia -- mesons made of a heavy quark and anti-quark -- have been extensively studied experimentally. Theoretical calculations of quarkonia based on lattice QCD are possible with control over the systematic errors. The comparison with experimental measurements of the quarkonia spectra leads to determinations of Standard Model parameters: the strong coupling, $α_s$, and the heavy quark masses.
We present non-perturbative results for the spectrum of heavy quarkonia. Using an anisotropic formulation of Lattice QCD we achieved an unprecedented control over statistical and systematic errors. We also study relativistic corrections to the leading order predictions for heavy hybrids and conventional bound states.
This talk is based on results obtained for masses and wave functions of heavy quarkonia in a light-front Hamiltonian formulation of QCD with just one flavor of quarks using an ansatz for the mass-gap for gluons. Since the calculated spectra compare reasonably well with data, some further steps one can make are discussed.
The perturbative renormalization group for light-front QCD Hamiltonian produces a logarithmically rising interquark potential already in second order, when all gluons are neglected. There is a question if this approach produces also color van der Waals forces between heavy quarkonia and of what kind. This article shows that such forces do exist and estimates their strength, with the result that they are on the border of exclusion in naive approach, while more advanced calculation is possible in QCD.
QCD corrections to all the allowed decays of superheavy groundstate quarkonia into electroweak gauge and Higgs bosons are presented. For quick estimates, approximations that reproduce the exact results within less than at worst two percent are also given.
We report the recent progress in the studies of D-wave heavy quarkonia production from gluon fragmentation at the Tevatron and in Z^0 decays, and the D-wave charmonia production in B decays. We show that the color-octet contributions are of crucial importance to the production of D-wave quarkonia. Signals, as strong as that for J/ψand ψ^\prime, should be seen for the D-wave charmonium in the processes. These will provide a test of the color-octet production mechanism.
We investigate the implications of spin symmetry for heavy quarkonia production and decay. We first compare spin symmetry predictions for charmonia and bottomonia radiative transitions with data and find they agree quite well. We next use spin symmetry along with nonrelativistic QCD power counting to determine the leading order alignment of P and D-wave orthoquarkonia that are produced through gluon fragmentation. Finally, we discuss a mechanism which may resolve the current factor of 30 discrepancy between theoretical predictions and experimental measurements of prompt $ψ'$ production at the …
Although individual levels of toponium will be unobservable, the top--anti--top system near threshold fulfills all requirements of a rigorous perturbation theory in QCD for weakly bound systems. Corresponding techniques from positronium may thus be transferred successfully to this case. After clarifying the effect of a non-zero width we calculate the $t\bar{t}$ potential to be used for the calculation of e.g. the cross-sections near threshold.
In this paper we propose an approach which demonstrates the dependence of quarkoni production on the multiplicity of the accompanying hadrons. Our approach is based on the three gluons fusion mechanism, without assuming the multiplicity dependence of the saturation scale. We show, that we describe the experimental data, which has a dependence that is much steeper than the multiplicity of the hadrons.
We present a new factorization theorem for the decay rates of P-wave states of heavy quarkonia. Infrared logarithms that had appeared in previous perturbative calculations of P-wave decays are absorbed into a quantity that is related to the amplitude for the heavy quark and antiquark to be in a relative color-octet S-wave state. We predict all of the light-hadronic and electromagnetic decays rates of the $χ_c$ and $h_c$ states in terms of two phenomenological parameters.
We find that single spin asymmetries in NRQCD are non-vanishing in general. They are proportional to the imaginary parts of some non-perturbative matrix elements. With statistics of about 10^6 identified J/psi's, or 10^5 identified chi_2, it is possible to measure these imaginary parts even if they are an order of magnitude smaller than the real parts. Such statistics are quite reasonable at polarised HERA N and other future experiments.
We study doubly polarised asymmetries of c-cbar and b-bbar mesons in hadro- and photo-production at low transverse momentum in non-relativistic QCD to high orders in the relative velocity of the pair, v. We give the complete set of expressions required for the asymmetries up to order v^9. The asymmetries in the production of eta_{c,b} states are a stable measure of the polarised gluon densities. The asymmetries for chi_{c,b}, J/psi, psi', and the various Upsilon states are stringent tests of the NRQCD scaling relations.
A constituent parton picture of hadrons with logarithmic confinement arises naturally in light-front QCD when the hamiltonian is computed using a perturbative renormalization group; however, rotational symmetry is not manifest as a simple kinematic symmetry. Relevant operators must typically be fine-tuned when a perturbative renormalization group is used, and in light-front field theory such operators contain functions of longitudinal momenta. We explore the possibility that a gluon mass operator with simple longitudinal momentum dependence may improve approximate kinematic rotational symmetry…
We investigate the effects of including the full three-loop QCD correction to the static short distance $1/r$ potential on the spectroscopy and decays in the charmonium and upsilon systems. We use a variational technique with the full three-loop corrected potential to determine a set of unperturbed trial wave functions and treat the relativistic and one-loop corrections as perturbations. The perturbed results are compared to the subset of the charmonium and upsilon spectra using a $χ^2$ test. This approach results in more accurate descriptions of the hyperfine splittings in both the $b\bar{b}$…
S-wave states of charmonium and bottomonium are described using bottom-up AdS/QCD. We propose a holographic model that unifies the description of masses and decay constants, leading to a precise match with experimental data on heavy quarkonia. Finite temperature effects are considered by calculating the current-current spectral functions of heavy vector mesons. The identification of quasi-particle states as Breit-Wigner resonances in the holographic spectral function was made. We develop a prescription to subtract background contributions from the spectral function to isolate the Breit-Wigner …
We introduce a new sum-rule for large-$N_c$ QCD which relates the density of heavy quarkonium states, the state-averaged square of the wavefunction at the origin, and the heavy quark current-current correlator. Focusing on the region of energy just above perturbative threshold, we calculate the correlator by incorporating arbitrarily high orders in the QCD coupling $α_s$. We use the sum-rule to determine the bottomonium potential using experimentally measured s-wave leptonic widths and compare the result with the potential obtained by direct calculation from the measured s-wave spectrum. We di…
I discuss recent progress in calculating quarkonia correlators and spectral functions on the lattice in relation with the problem of quarkonia dissolution at high temperatures and heavy quark transport in Quark Gluon Plasma.
A holographic model of probe quarkonia is presented, where the dynamical gravity-dilaton background is adjusted to the thermodynamics of 2 +1 flavor QCD with physical quark masses. The quarkonia action is modified to account for a systematic study of the heavy-quark mass dependence. We focus on the $J/ψ$ and $Υ$ spectral functions and relate our model to heavy quarkonia formation as a special aspect of hadron phenomenology in heavy-ion collisions at LHC.
We calculate the annihilation decay widths of spin-singlet heavy quarkonia $h_c, h_b$ and $η_b$} into light hadrons with both QCD and relativistic corrections at order $O(α_{s}v^{2})$ in nonrelativistic QCD. With appropriate estimates for the long-distance matrix elements by using the potential model and operator evolution method, we find that our predictions of these decay widths are consistent with recent experimental measurements. We also find that the $O(α_{s}v^{2})$ corrections are small for $b\bar{b}$ states but substantial for $c\bar{c}$ states. In particular, the negative contribution …
We review recent progress in Non-Relativistic QCD and in related Non-Relativistic Effective Field Theories with emphasis on the applications to heavy quarkonia.
We present an implementation of heavy quarkonium production within a perturbative QCD cascade based on the Colour Dipole Cascade model. We consider the processes most relevant in the context of the psi' surplus at the Tevatron; g -> psi' and c -> psi' in the colour-singlet model and g -> psi' through the colour-octet mechanism. Our implementation is, however, easily extendible to other quarkonia and other production mechanisms. Where comparison is possible we find good agreement with analytical calculations. We present some suggestions for measurements at the Tevatron that would be sensitive t…
We discuss how the spectral changes of quarkonia at T_c can reflect the ``critical'' behaviour of QCD phase transition. Starting from the temperature dependencies of the energy density and pressure from lattice QCD calculation, we extract the temperature dependencies of the scalar and spin 2 gluon condensates near T_c. We also parameterize these changes into the electric and magnetic condensate near T_c. While the magnetic condensate hardly changes across T_c, we find that the electric condensate increases abruptly above T_c. Similar abrupt change is also seen in the scalar condensate. Using t…
The decay rates of P-wave heavy quarkonia to light hadrons are presented to leading order in $v^2$ and next-to-leading order in $α_s$. They include contributions from both the color-singlet component and the color-octet component of quarkonia. Applying these results to charmonium and using measured decay rates for the $χ_{c1}$ and $χ_{c2}$ by E760, we determine the two nonperturbative decay matrix elements, and then predict the hadronic decay rates of $χ_{c0}$ and $h_c$, and the electromagnetic decay rates of $χ_{c0}$ and $χ_{c2}$. The obtained decay rates of $χ_{c0}\to LH$ and $χ_{c0}\toγγ$ a…
We present results on (order v^2) QCD interquark potentials from SU(3) lattice simulations on volumes of up to 32^4 lattice sites at beta = 6.2 and beta = 6.0. Preliminary results on quarkonia spectra as obtained from these potentials are presented.
The production of heavy quarkonia is a powerful tool to test our understanding of strong interaction dynamics. It is well-known that the dominant production mechanism for heavy quarkonia with large transverse momentum is fragmentation. In this work we, analytically, calculate the QCD leading order contribution to the process-independent fragmentation functions (FFs) for a gluon to split into the vector ($J/ψ$) and pseudoscalar ($η_c$) $S$-wave charmonium states. The analyses of this paper differ in which we present, for the first time, an analytical form of the $g\rightarrow J/ψ$ FF using a di…
Bottomonium and charmonium, representing quarkonia states, are scrutinized under the point of view of the information theory, in the AdS/QCD holographic setup. A logarithmic measure of information, comprised by the configurational entropy, is here employed to quantitatively study quarkonia radially excited S-wave states. The configurational entropy provides data regarding the relative dominance and the abundance of the bottomonium and charmonium states, whose underlying information is more compressed, in the Shannon's theory meaning. The derived configurational entropy, therefore, identifies t…
We argue that the photon spectra in radiative decays of various heavy quarkonium states provide important information on their nature. If two of these states are in the strong coupling regime, we are able to produce a parameter-free model independent formula, which holds at next-to-leading order and includes both direct and fragmentation contributions. When the formula is checked against recent CLEO data it favors Upsilon (2S) and Upsilon (3S) in the strong coupling regime and disfavors Upsilon (1S) in it.
New double ratios of exponential moments of different two-point functions, which are less sensitive to the heavy quark mass and to the continuum effects than the commonly used ratio of moments, are presented for a more refined analysis of the mass-splittings between the different heavy quarkonia states. We show that at the $c$ and $b$ quark mass scales the $1/m$-expansion does not converge for these quarkonia channels, while a connection of our mass and width formulae, with the potential model ones is done. Using the present value of the QCD coupling $α_s$, we deduce the value: $<α_s G^2> = (7…
One of the most important tasks in high energy physics is search for the exotic states, such as glueball, hybrid and multi-quark states. The transitions $ψ(ns)\to ψ(ms)+ππ$ and $Υ(ns)\to Υ(ms)+ππ$ attract great attentions because they may reveal characteristics of hybrids. In this work, we analyze those transition modes in terms of the theoretical framework established by Yan and Kuang. It is interesting to notice that the intermediate states between the two gluon-emissions are hybrids, therefore by fitting the data, we are able to determine the mass spectra of hybrids. The ground hybrid state…
An effective, low-energy, field theory of s-wave quarkonia, constituent heavy quarks, and gluons is constructed which is manifestly gauge invariant. The interaction Lagrangian has the form of a twist expansion, as typically encountered in hard processes, and involves derivatives of arbitrary order. The parameters in the interaction are related with the non-relativistic wave function, and standard results for $Q\bar{Q}$ inclusive decays and radiative transitions are shown to be easily recovered. The light-cone gluon momentum distribution at very small $x$ is calculated and shown to be uniquely …
The status of determinations of $\al_s$ from quarkonia using lattice QCD is reviewed. We compare the results with those obtained from perturbative QCD.
For heavy quarkonia of moderate energy, we generalize the relevant successful theory, non-relativistic Quantum Chromodynamics (NRQCD), to include interactions in nuclear matter. The new resulting theory, NRQCD with Glauber gluons, provides for the first time a universal microscopic description of the interaction of heavy quarkonia with a strongly interacting medium, consistently applicable to a range of phases, such as cold nuclear matter, dense hadron gas, and quark-gluon plasma. The effective field theory we present in this work is derived from first principles and is an important step forwa…
Here I review the temperature-dependence of heavy quarkonia correlators in potential models with three different screened potentials, and compare these to the results from lattice QCD. None of the potentials investigated yield results consistent with the lattice data, indicating that screening is likely not the mechanism for heavy quarkonia suppression. I also discuss a simple toy model, not based on temperature-dependent screening, that can reproduce the lattice results.
QCD running coupling constant $α_s(m_c)$ and $α_s(m_b)$ are determined from heavy quarkonia $c\overline{c}$ and $b\overline{b}$ decays. The decay rates of $V\rightarrow 3g$ and $V\rightarrow e^+ e^-$ for $V=J/ψ$ and $Υ$ are estimated by taking into account both relativistic and QCD radiative corrections. The decay amplitudes are derived in the Bethe-Salpeter formalism, and the decay rates are estimated by using the meson wavefunctions which are obtained with a QCD-inspired inter-quark potential. For the $V\rightarrow 3g$ decay we find the relativistic correction to be very large and to severel…
We have investigated the spectra of light-heavy quarkonia with the use of a quantum-chromodynamic potential model which is similar to that used earlier for the heavy quarkonia. An essential feature of our treatment is the inclusion of the one-loop radiative corrections to the quark-antiquark potential, which contribute significantly to the spin-splittings among the quarkonium energy levels. Unlike $c\bar{c}$ and $b\bar{b}$, the potential for a light-heavy system has a complicated dependence on the light and heavy quark masses $m$ and $M$, and it contains a spin-orbit mixing term. We have obtai…
We discuss systems containing a heavy quark and a heavy antiquark in the infinite mass limit of QCD. Studying the limit of equal velocities for both heavy particles, we formulate an effective theory approach to heavy quarkonia-like systems. The method is well suited to processes in which the two heavy quarks annihilate, such as electromagnetic and strong decays of charmonium and bottomonium and weak decays of $B_c$.
In the framework of QCD sum rules one uses a scheme, allowing one to apply the conditions of both nonrelativistic heavy quark motion inside mesons and independence of nonsplitting nS-state density on the heavy quark flavours. In the leading order an analitic expression is derived for leptonic constants of both heavy quarkonia and heavy mesons with a single heavy quark. The expression allows one explicitly to determine scaling properties of the constants.
A scheme is presented here to cancel out the topologically unfactorized infrared divergences in the inclusive production of heavy quarkonia, which affect the NRQCD factorization of these processes. The heavy quarkonia are defined as resonance states of QCD instead of color singlet heavy quark pair. Thus the final heavy quark pair is nor necessarily to be color singlet. In addition, the heavy quarkonia are reconstructed by their decay products. As the result, transition between states containing containing heavy quarks caused by exchanges of soft gluons are also taken into account here. Such ca…
A constituent parton picture of hadrons with logarithmic confinement naturally arises in weak coupling light-front QCD. Confinement provides a mass gap that allows the constituent picture to emerge. The effective renormalized Hamiltonian is computed to ${\cal O}(g^2)$, and used to study charmonium and bottomonium. Radial and angular excitations can be used to fix the coupling $α$, the quark mass $M$, and the cutoff $Λ$. The resultant hyperfine structure is very close to experiment.
Leading twist light cone distribution amplitudes (LCDAs) are key ingredients in calculating various hadronic amplitudes using light cone QCD sum rules. This work concentrates on calculating the leading twist LCDAs of P-wave heavy quarkonia. Quark model wavefunctions for the ground, first and second excited states of P-wave charmonia and bottomonia have been calculated, and are used for calculating the relevant LCDAs and leptonic decay constants.
We show that the perturbation series for quarkonia energies diverges at large orders. This results in a perturbative ambiguity in the energy that scales as e^(-1/a*Lambda) where a is the Bohr radius of quarkonium and Lambda is the QCD scale parameter. This ambiguity is associated with a nonperturbative contribution to the energy from distances of order 1/Lambda and greater. This contribution is separate from that of the gluon condensate.
Rigorous QCD predictions for decay rates of the P-wave states of heavy quarkonia are presented. They are based on a new factorization theorem which is valid to leading order in the heavy quark velocity and to all orders in the running coupling constant of QCD. The decay rates for all four P states into light hadronic or electromagnetic final states are expressed in terms of two phenomenological parameters, whose coefficients are perturbatively calculable. Logarithms of the binding energy encountered in previous perturbative calculations of P-wave decays are factored into a phenomenological par…

The spin-dependent interactions in mesons are considered in detail in the framework of the Field Correlator Method. Analytic expressions for the spin-dependent potentials in heavy and light quarkonia are derived with the QCD string moment of inertia taken into account. Recent lattice data are analysed using these formulae and the data are shown to be consistent with very small values of the gluonic correlation length, <0.1 fm. The Field Correlator and the Eichten-Feinberg definitions of the spin-dependent potentials in the lowest, Gaussian approximation for the QCD vacuum are compared to one a…
