We study massless geodesics near the photon-spheres of a large family of solutions of Einstein-Maxwell theory in five dimensions, including BHs, naked singularities and smooth horizon-less JMaRT geometries obtained as six-dimensional uplifts of the five-dimensional solution. We find that a light ring of unstable photon orbits surrounding the mass center is always present, independently of the existence of a horizon or singularity. We compute the Lyapunov exponent, characterizing the chaotic behaviour of geodesics near the `photon-sphere' and the time decay of ring-down modes dominating the response of the geometry to perturbations at late times. We show that, for geometries free of naked singularities, the Lyapunov exponent is always bounded by its value for a Schwarzschild BH of the same mass.
Coulomb branch chiral rings of $\mathcal N=2$ SCFTs are conjectured to be freely generated. While no counter-example is known, no direct evidence for the conjecture is known either. We initiate a systematic study of SCFTs with Coulomb branch chiral rings satisfying non-trivial relations, restricting our analysis to rank 1. The main result of our study is that (rank-1) SCFTs with non-freely generated CB chiral rings when deformed by relevant deformations, always flow to theories with non-freely generated CB rings. This implies that if they exist, they must thus form a distinct subset under RG f…
We discuss the relation between solutions admitting Killing spinors of minimal supergravities in five dimensions and four dimensional complex geometries. In the ungauged case (vanishing cosmological constant Λ=0) the solutions are determined in terms of a hyper-Kahler base space; in the gauged case (Λ<0) the complex geometry is Kahler; in the de Sitter case (Λ>0) the complex geometry is hyper-Kahler with torsion (HKT). In the latter case some details of the derivation are given. The method for constructing explicit solutions is discussed in each case.
We study topology-changing transitions in the space of higher-dimensional black hole solutions. Kol has proposed that these are conifold-type transitions controlled by self-similar double-cone geometries. We present an exact example of this phenomenon in the intersection between a black hole horizon and a cosmological deSitter horizon in D >= 6. We also describe local models for the critical geometries that control many transitions in the phase space of higher-dimensional black holes, such as the pinch-down of a topologically spherical black hole to a black ring or to a black p-sphere, or the …
We investigate five dimensional Einstein spaces in warped geometries from the point of view of the four dimensional physically relevant Robertson-Walker-Friedman cosmological metric and the Schwarzschild metric. We show that a four-dimensional cosmology with a closed spacelike section and a cosmological constant can be imbedded into five-dimensional flat space-time.
We show that there exist supersymmetric solutions of five-dimensional, pure, $\mathcal{N}=1$ Supergravity such that the norm of the supersymmetric Killing vector, built out of the Killing spinor, is a real not-everywhere analytic function such that all its derivatives vanish at a point where the Killing vector field becomes null. The norm of the Killing vector field then is not an analytic function on a neighborhood around this point. We explicitly construct such solutions by using a multi-center Gibbons-Hawking base. Although many of these solutions have infinite charges, we find explicit exa…
It has been proven in arXiv:1303.0853 that all regular supersymmetric near-horizon geometries in minimal five-dimensional gauged supergravity admit automatic supersymmetry enhancement. Using this result, the integrability conditions associated with the existence of the additional supersymmetry are analysed, and the near-horizon geometries are determined explicitly. We show that they all correspond to previously constructed examples. Hence, there are no supersymmetric black ring solutions in minimal five-dimensional gauged supergravity.
We compute correlation functions in the AdS/CFT correspondence to study the emergence of effective spacetime geometries describing complex underlying microstates. The basic argument is that almost all microstates of fixed charges lie close to certain "typical" configurations. These give a universal response to generic probes, which is captured by an emergent geometry. The details of the microstates can only be observed by atypical probes. We compute two point functions in typical ground states of the Ramond sector of the D1-D5 CFT, and compare with bulk two-point functions computed in asymptot…
We construct smooth BPS three-charge geometries that resolve the zero-entropy singularity of the U(1) x U(1) invariant black ring. This singularity is resolved by a geometric transition that results in geometries without any branes sources or singularities but with non-trivial topology. These geometries are both ground states of the black ring, and non-trivial microstates of the D1-D5-P system. We also find the form of the geometries that result from the geometric transition of N zero-entropy black rings, and argue that, in general, such geometries give a very large number of smooth bound-stat…
These are notes for some introductory lectures about microstate geometries and their construction. The first lecture considers BPS black holes in four dimensions as a way to introduce what one should expect from the BPS equations. The second lecture discusses the "no solitons without topology" theorem. The subsequent lectures move on to the construction and properties of bubbled microstate geometries in five dimensions. Since these are graduate lectures, they involve a strongly computational narrative intended to build some proficiency and understanding of supersymmetric solitons in five-dimen…
We derive the relation between the Hilbert space of certain geometries under the Bohr-Sommerfeld quantization and the perturbative prepotentials for the supersymmetric five-dimensional SU(N) gauge theories with massive fundamental matters and with one massive adjoint matter. The gauge theory with one adjoint matter shows interesting features. A five-dimensional generalization of Nekrasov's partition function can be written as a correlation function of two-dimensional chiral bosons and as a partition function of a statistical model of partitions. From a ground state of the statistical model we …
We classify all pseudo-supersymmetric near horizon geometries of extremal black holes in five dimensional de-Sitter supergravity coupled to vector multiplets. We find that there are three types of solution. The first type corresponds to the near-horizon geometry of extremal de Sitter BMPV black holes, and the spatial cross-section of the horizon is topologically S^3. The other two solutions cannot be embedded into the minimal de-Sitter supergravity theory, and correspond to near-horizon geometries for which the spatial cross-sections of the horizon are T^3 or S^1 * S^2.
We study the BPS solutions of the asymptotically flat, stationary microstate geometries with bi-axisymmetry and reflection symmetry in the five-dimensional ungauged minimal supergravity. We show that the angular momenta of the microstate geometry with a small number of centers (at least, five centers) have lower bounds, which are slightly smaller than those of the maximally spinning BMPV black hole. Therefore, there exists a certain narrow parameter region such that the microstate geometry with a small number of centers admits the same angular momenta as the BMPV black hole. Moreover, we inves…
New families of BPS black ring solutions with four electric and four dipole magnetic charges have recently been explicitly constructed and uplifted to M-theory. These solutions were found to belong to a CFT with central charge different compared to the one of the STU model. Because of their importance to AdS/CFT, here we give the microstate description of these geometries in terms of topological bubbles and supertubes. The fourth charge results in an additional flux through the topological cycles that resolve the brane singularities. The analog of these solutions in the IIB frame yield a gener…
We investigate the dynamics of space-time filling five-branes wrapped on curves in heterotic and orientifold Calabi-Yau compactifications. We first study the leading N=1 scalar potential on the infinite deformation space of the brane-curve around a supersymmetric configuration. The higher order potential is also determined by a brane superpotential which we compute for a subset of light deformations. We argue that these deformations map to new complex structure deformations of a non-Calabi-Yau manifold which is obtained by blowing up the brane-curve into a four-cycle and by replacing the brane…
In this paper we continue our analysis of arXiv:1308.1478[hep-th] and study in detail the parameter space of three families of doubly spinning black ring solutions: balanced black ring, unbalanced ring and dipole-charged balanced black rings. In all these three families the Extremal Vanishing Horizon (EVH) ring appears in the vanishing limit of the dimensionful parameter of the solution which measures the ring size. We study the near horizon limit of the EVH black rings and for all three cases we find a (pinching orbifold) AdS$_3$ throat with the AdS$_3$ radius $\ell^2=8 G_5 M/(3π)$ where $M$ …
We analyze the map between a class of `fuzzball' solutions in five dimensions and four-dimensional multicentered solutions under the 4D-5D connection, and interpret the resulting configurations in the framework of Denef and Moore. In five dimensions, we consider Kaluza-Klein monopole supertubes with circular profile which represent microstates of a small black ring. The resulting four-dimensional configurations are, in a suitable duality frame, polar states consisting of stacks of D6 and anti-D6 branes with flux. We argue that these four-dimensional configurations represent zero-entropy consti…
Associated to every stationary extremal black hole is a unique near-horizon geometry, itself a solution of the field equations. These latter spacetimes are more tractable to analyze and most importantly, retain properties of the original black hole which are intrinsic to the event horizon. After reviewing general features of near-horizon geometries, such as SO(2,1) symmetry enhancement, I report on recent work on stationary, charged extremal black hole solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell equations with a negative cosmological constant in four dimensions and present a classification of near-horiz…

We investigate the structure of smooth and horizonless microstate geometries in six dimensions, in the spirit of the five-dimensional analysis of Gibbons and Warner [arXiv:1305.0957]. In six dimensions, which is the natural setting for horizonless geometries with the charges of the D1-D5-P black hole, the natural black objects are strings and there are no Chern-Simons terms for the tensor gauge fields. However, we still find that the same reasoning applies: in absence of horizons, there can be no smooth stationary solutions without non-trivial topology. We use topological arguments to describe…
The Chong-Cvetic-Lu-Pope 5D rotating charged black hole proves to belong to a set of solutions to Einstein-Maxwell-Chern-Simons (EMCS) equations that share the electromagnetic potential and the Chern-Simons coupling constant but differ in the Kretschmann invariant. This one-parametric family of solutions is found by proposing a properly deformed Plebanski-Demianski Ansatz for modeling the metric tensor. While no black-hole solutions for other values of the Chern-Simons coupling constant are found within this Ansatz, another type of non-static electrovacuum solutions to 5D EMCS equations are ob…
We show the existence of stable bound orbits for the massive and massless particles moving in the simplest microstate geometry spacetime in the bosonic sector of the five-dimensional minimal supergravity. In our analysis, reducing the motion of particles to a two-dimensional potential problem, we numerically investigate whether the potential has a negative local minimum.
We classify under some assumptions the IIB black hole horizons with 5-form flux preserving more than 2 supersymmetries. We find that the spatial horizon sections with non-vanishing flux preserving 4 supersymmetries are locally isometric either to S^1 * S^3 * T^4 or to S^1 * S^3 * K_3 and the associated near horizon geometries are locally isometric to AdS_3 * S^3 * T^4 and AdS_3 * S^3 * K_3$, respectively. The near horizon geometries preserving more than 4 supersymmetries are locally isometric to R^{1,1} * T^8.
We study semiclassical string solutions on the 1/2 BPS geometry of type IIB string theory characterized by concentric rings on the boundary plane. We consider both folded rotating strings carrying nonzero R-charge and circular pulsating strings. We find that unlike rotating strings, as far as circular pulsating strings are concerned, the dynamics remains qualitatively unchanged when the concentric rings replace AdS_5\times S^5. Using the gravity dual we have also studied the Wilson loop of the corresponding gauge theory. The result is qualitatively the same as that in AdS_5\times S^5 in the gl…
We consider the classification of static near-horizon geometries of stationary extremal (not necessarily BPS) black hole solutions of five dimensional Einstein-Maxwell theory coupled to a Chern-Simons term with coupling xi (with xi=1 corresponding to supergravity). Assuming the black holes have two rotational symmetries, we show that their near-horizon geometries are either the direct product AdS_3 X S^2 or a warped product of AdS_2 and compact 3d space. In the AdS_2 case we are able to classify all possible near-horizon geometries with no magnetic fields. There are two such solutions: the dir…
We construct the most generic three-charge, three-dipole-charge, BPS black-ring solutions in a Taub-NUT background. These solutions depend on seven charges and six moduli, and interpolate between a four-dimensional black hole and a five-dimensional black ring. They are also instrumental in determining the correct microscopic description of the five-dimensional BPS black rings.
We systematically derive the asymptotically flat five dimensional black rings in EMd gravity by using the sigma model structure of the dimensionally reduced field equations. New non-asymptotically flat EMd black ring solutions in five dimensions are also constructed and their physical properties are analyzed.
We study vacuum solutions of five-dimensional Einstein equations generated by the inverse scattering method. We reproduce the black ring solution which was found by Emparan and Reall by taking the Euclidean Levi-Civita metric plus one-dimensional flat space as a seed. This transformation consists of two successive processes; the first step is to perform the three-solitonic transformation of the Euclidean Levi-Civita metric with one-dimensional flat space as a seed. The resulting metric is the Euclidean C-metric with extra one-dimensional flat space. The second is to perform the two-solitonic t…
We analyze some properties of the four dimensional supergravity theories which originate from five dimensions upon reduction. They generalize to N>2 extended supersymmetries the d-geometries with cubic prepotentials, familiar from N=2 special Kähler geometry. We emphasize the role of a suitable parametrization of the scalar fields and the corresponding triangular symplectic basis. We also consider applications to the first order flow equations for non-BPS extremal black holes.
In this paper we discuss two aspects of duality transformations on the Neveu-Schwarz (NS) 5-brane solutions in type II and heterotic string theories. First we demonstrate that the non-extremal NS 5-brane background is U-dual to its CGHS limit, a two-dimensional black hole times $S^3\times T^5$; an intermediate step is provided by the near horizon geometry which is given by the three-dimensional $BTZ_3$ black hole (being closely related to $AdS_3$) times $S^3\times T^4$. In the second part of the paper we discuss the T-duality between $k$ NS 5-branes and the Taub-NUT spaces respectively ALE spa…
We construct the first smooth, horizonless ``microstate geometries'' that have the same charges, dipole charges and angular momenta as a BPS black ring whose horizon is macroscopic. These solutions have exactly the same geometry as black rings, except that the usual infinite throat is smoothly capped off at a very large depth. If the solutions preserve a U(1)x U(1) isometry, then this depth is limited by flux quantization but if this symmetry is broken then the throat can be made arbitrarily deep by tuning classical, geometric moduli. Interpreting these ``abysses'' (smooth microstate geometrie…
We describe and study families of BPS microstate geometries, namely, smooth, horizonless asymptotically-flat solutions to supergravity. We examine these solutions from the perspective of earlier attempts to find solitonic solutions in gravity and show how the microstate geometries circumvent the earlier "No-Go" theorems. In particular, we re-analyse the Smarr formula and show how it must be modified in the presence of non-trivial second homology. This, combined with the supergravity Chern-Simons terms, allows the existence of rich classes of BPS, globally hyperbolic, asymptotically flat, micro…
Five dimensional neutral rotating black rings are described from a Randall-Sundrum brane world perspective in the bulk black string framework. To this end we consider a rotating black string extension of a five dimensional black ring into the bulk of a six dimensional Randall-Sundrum brane world with a single four brane. The bulk solution intercepts the four brane in a five dimensional black ring with the usual curvature singularity on the brane. The bulk geodesics restricted to the plane of rotation of the black ring are constructed and their projections on the four brane match with the usual…
We study axisymmetric self-gravitating non-linear $σ$-model in five-dimensional spacetime admitting three commutating Killing vector fields. We show that the only asymptotically flat black ring solution with a regular event horizon is the black ring characterized by mass and two angular momenta with constant mapping.
In this review article we describe some of the recent progress towards the construction and analysis of three-charge configurations in string theory and supergravity. We begin by describing the Born-Infeld construction of three-charge supertubes with two dipole charges, and then discuss the general method of constructing three-charge solutions in five dimensions. We explain in detail the use of these methods to construct black rings, black holes, as well as smooth microstate geometries with black hole and black ring charges, but with no horizon. We present arguments that many of these microsta…
Motivated by the string theory analysis of arXiv:1108.6331, we construct a class of 1/8-BPS solutions of type IIB supergravity compactified on S^1 x T^4. In this duality frame our ansatz allows for a non-trivial NS-NS B-field which has been usually set to zero in previous studies of 1/8-BPS geometries. We provide a M-theory description of these new geometries and show that they can be interpreted as the lift of solutions of the N=2 5D supergravity with three vector multiplets and whose scalar manifold is the symmetric space SO(1,1) x (SO(1,2)/SO(2)). Finally we show that the non-minimal 5D bla…
We consider the classification of near-horizon geometries in a general two-derivative theory of gravity coupled to abelian gauge fields and uncharged scalars in four and five dimensions, with one and two commuting rotational symmetries respectively. Assuming that the theory of gravity reduces to a 3d non-linear sigma model (as is typically the case for ungauged supergravities), we show that the functional form of any such near-horizon geometry may be determined. As an example we apply this to five dimensional minimal supergravity. We also construct an example of a five parameter near-horizon g…
An overview is given of the construction of a differential polynomial ring of functions on the moduli space of Calabi-Yau threefolds. These rings coincide with the rings of quasi modular forms for geometries with duality groups for which these are known. They provide a generalization thereof otherwise. Higher genus topological string amplitudes can be expressed in terms of the generators of this ring giving them a global description in the moduli space. An action of a duality exchanging large volume and conifold loci in moduli space is discussed. The connection to quasi modular forms is illust…
We construct balanced black ring solutions in $d\geq 6$ spacetime dimensions, by solving the Einstein field equations numerically with suitable boundary conditions. The black ring solutions have a regular event horizon with $S^1\times S^{d-3}$ topology, and they approach the Minkowski background asymptotically. We analyze their global and horizon properties. The Smarr formula is well satisfied.
Using a solution generating technique, we derive a new exact solution describing a charged static black ring on the Taub-bolt gravitational instanton in five dimensions. Unlike the black ring constructed on the self-dual Taub-NUT instanton, it turns out that it is possible to find values of the parameters for which the static black ring is in equilibrium and the conical singularities disappear. We compute its conserved charges and discuss some of its thermodynamic properties.
We analyze higher derivative corrections to attractor geometries in five dimensions. We find corrected AdS_3xS^2 geometries by solving the equations of motion coming from a recently constructed four-derivative supergravity action in five dimensions. The result allows us to explicitly verify a previous anomaly based derivation of the AdS_3 central charges of this theory. Also, by dimensional reduction we compare our results with those of the 4D higher derivative attractor, and find complete agreement.
We present a geometric construction of a new class of hyper-Kahler manifolds with torsion. This involves the superposition of the four-dimensional hyper-Kahler geometry with torsion associated with the NS-5-brane along quaternionic planes in quaternionic k-space, $\bH^k$. We find the moduli space of these geometries and show that it can be constructed using the bundle space of the canonical quaternionic line bundle over a quaternionic projective space. We also investigate several special cases which are associated with certain classes of quaternionic planes in $\bH^k$. We then show that the ei…
Using the solitonic solution-generating technique we rederived the one-rotational five-dimensional black ring solution found by Emparan and Reall. The seed solution is not the Minkowski metric, which is the seed of $S^2$-rotating black ring. The obtained solution has more parameters than the Emparan and Reall's $S^1$-rotating black ring. We found the conditions of parameters to reduce the solution to the $S^1$-rotating black ring. In addition we examined the relation between the expressions of the metric in the prolate-spheroidal coordinates and in the canonical coordinates.
Motivated by the Extremal Vanishing Horizon (EVH) black holes, their near horizon geometry and the EVH/CFT proposal, we construct and classify solutions with (local) SO(2,2) symmetry to four and five dimensional Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton (EMD) theory with positive, zero or negative cosmological constant Lambda, the EMD-$Λ$ theory, and also $U(1)^4$ gauged supergravity in four dimensions and $U(1)^3$ gauged supergravity in five dimensions. In four dimensions the geometries are warped product of AdS3 with an interval or a circle. In five dimensions the geometries are of the form of warped product…
We present balanced black ring solutions of pure Einstein-Maxwell theory in five dimensions. The solutions are asymptotically flat, and their tension and gravitational self-attraction are balanced by the repulsion due to rotation and electrical charge. Hence the solutions are free of conical singularities and possess a regular horizon which exhibits the topology S1 x S2 of a torus. We discuss the global charges and the horizon properties of the solutions and show that they satisfy a Smarr relation. We construct these black rings numerically, restricting to the case of black rings with a rotati…
We study the dynamics of BPS string-like objects obtained by lifting monopole and dyon solutions of N=2 Super-Yang-Mills theory to five dimensions. We present exact traveling wave solutions which preserve half of the supersymmetries. Upon compactification this leads to macroscopic BPS rings in four dimensions in field theory. Due to the fact that the strings effectively move in six dimensions the same procedure can also be used to obtain rings in five dimensions by using the hidden dimension.
Using a solution generating technique based on the symmetries of the dimensionally reduced Lagrangian we derive two exact solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton field equations in five dimensions. More specifically, these solutions describe general systems of non-extremally charged static asymptotically flat black bi/di-ring. We compute their conserved charges and investigate some of their properties. As expected, we find that in general there are conical singularities in between the black rings and for the static solutions considered here they cannot be completely eliminated.
We find soliton solutions in five-dimensional gauged supergravity, where a circle degenerates smoothly in the core of the geometry. In the family of solutions we consider, we find no completely smooth supersymmetric solutions, but we find discrete families of non-supersymmetric solitons. We discuss the relation to previous studies of the asymptotically flat case. We also consider gauged supergravities in four and seven dimensions, but fail to find any smooth solutions.
Five dimensional gravity coupled, both in the bulk and on a brane, to a scalar Liouville field yields a geometry confined to a strip around the brane and with time dependent scale factors for the four geometry. In various limits known models can be recovered as well as a temporally expanding four geometry with a warp factor falling exponentially away from the brane. The effective theory on the brane has a time dependent Planck mass and ``cosmological constant''. Although the scale factor expands, the expansion is not an acceleration.
We examine certain two-charge supersymmetric states with spin in five-dimensional string theories which can be viewed as small black rings when the gravitational coupling is large. Using the 4D-5D connection, these small black rings correspond to four-dimensional non-spinning small black holes. Using this correspondence, we compute the degeneracy of the microstates of the small black rings exactly and show that it is in precise agreement with the macroscopic degeneracy to all orders in an asymptotic expansion. Furthermore, we analyze the five-dimensional small black ring geometry and show qual…
Recently, 1/2-BPS AdS bubble solutions have been obtained by Lin, Lunin and Maldacena, which correspond to Fermi droplets in phase space in the dual CFT picture. They can be thought of as generalisations of 1/2-BPS AdS black hole solutions in five or seven dimensional gauged supergravity. In this paper, we extend these solutions by invoking additional gauge fields and scalar fields in the supergravity Lagrangians, thereby obtaining AdS bubble generalisations of the previously-known multi-charge AdS black solutions of gauged supergravity. We also obtain analogous AdS bubble solutions in four-di…
We study how the charges of the black rings measured at the asymptotic infinity are encoded in the near-horizon metric and gauge potentials, independent of the detailed structure of the connecting region. Our analysis clarifies how different sets of four-dimensional charges can be assigned to a single five-dimensional object under the Kaluza-Klein reduction. Possible choices are related by the Witten effect on dyons and by the large gauge transformation in four and five dimensions, respectively.
The entropy function for five-dimensional supersymmetric black rings, which are solutions of $U(1)^{3}$ minimal supergravity, is calculated via both on-shell and off-shell formalism. We find that at the tree level, the entropy function obtained from both perspectives can reproduce the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy. We also compute the higher order corrections to the entropy arising form five-dimensional Gauss-Bonnet term as well as supersymmetric $R^{2}$ completion respectively and compare the results with previous microscopic calculations.
The vacuum Einstein equations in five dimensions are shown to admit a solution describing an asymptotically flat spacetime regular on and outside an event horizon of topology S^1 x S^2. It describes a rotating ``black ring''. This is the first example of an asymptotically flat vacuum solution with an event horizon of non-spherical topology. There is a range of values for the mass and angular momentum for which there exist two black ring solutions as well as a black hole solution. Therefore the uniqueness theorems valid in four dimensions do not have simple higher dimensional generalizations. I…
We study half-BPS surface operators in supersymmetric gauge theories in four and five dimensions following two different approaches. In the first approach we analyze the chiral ring equations for certain quiver theories in two and three dimensions, coupled respectively to four- and five-dimensional gauge theories. The chiral ring equations, which arise from extremizing a twisted chiral superpotential, are solved as power series in the infrared scales of the quiver theories. In the second approach we use equivariant localization and obtain the twisted chiral superpotential as a function of the …
We derive new rotating, non-asymptotically flat black ring solutions in five-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton gravity with dilaton coupling constant $α=\sqrt{8/3}$ which arises from a six-dimensional Kaluza-Klein theory. As a limiting case we also find new rotating, non-asymptotically flat five-dimensional black holes. The solutions are analyzed and the mass, angular momentum and charge are computed. A Smarr-like relation is found. It is shown that the first law of black hole thermodynamics is satisfied.
We use solution-generating techniques to construct interpolating geometries between general asymptotically flat, charged, rotating, non-extremal black holes in four and five dimensions and their subtracted geometries. In the four-dimensional case, this is achieved by the use of Harrison transformations, whereas in the five-dimensional case we use STU transformations. We also give the interpretation of these solution-generating transformations in terms of string (pseudo)-dualities, showing that they correspond to combinations of T-dualities and Melvin twists. Upon uplift to one dimension higher…
We show that for n-dimensional Einstein gravity coupled to a scalar field with mass-squared m_0^2=-n(n-2)/(4\ell^2), the first law of thermodynamics of (charged) AdS black holes will be modified by the boundary conditions of the scalar field at asymptotic infinity. Such scalars can arise in gauged supergravities in four and six dimensions, but not in five or seven. The result provides a guiding principle for constructing designer black holes and solitons in general dimensions, where the properties of the dual field theories depend on the boundary conditions.
