Gravitational waves are rapidly becoming a very reliable tool for testing alternative theories of gravity. In particular, features in the gravitational wave emission during black hole ringdown phase provide a direct probe of the spacetime outside the black hole. In this article, we consider black holes in ghost-free massive gravity. These black holes generically have scalar hair. We found that a simple coupling between gravitational perturbations and this scalar hair can change the quasinormal ringing of the black hole, and in particular, produce echoes in the emitted gravitational waves. This finding provides a clear-cut way to test massive gravity theory using gravitational wave observations.
We show that the higher order curvature corrections to general relativity in the strong gravity regime of near horizon scales produce a rapidly oscillating and infalling Ricci scalar fireball just outside the horizon. This can generate the ringdown modes of gravitational waves having the same natural frequency as those which are generated by the black hole mergers. Our analysis provides a viable explanation to the echoes in the ringdown modes recently detected from the LIGO data, without invoking the existence of any exotic structures at the horizon.
We study the stability of an asymptotically flat, static, spherically symmetric naked singularity spacetime in the novel four dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet (EGB) gravity. The four dimensional EGB black hole for large enough values of the coupling parameter leads to such a naked singularity. The stability and the response of the spacetime is studied against the perturbations by test scalar, electromagnetic and Dirac fields and the time evolution of these perturbations were observed numerically. Implementing a null Dirichlet boundary condition near the singularity, we observed that for l=1 m…
We construct a star with uniform density in frame of tracking Rastall gravity, in which the density of effective dark matter tracks the density of dark energy. To demonstrate stability of the star we analyse the axial gravitational perturbations of the star. We find that echo wavelets naturally appear in the axial gravitational waves when the dark matter plays a significant role in construction of the star. We show that the physical origin of this echo roots in the potential valley near the surface of star. This effect leads to a clue to detect Rastall dark energy from the ringdown phase of gr…
The compact stars are promising candidates associated with the generation of gravitational waves (GWs). In this work, we study a special type of compact stars known as strange stars in the $f(\mathcal{R})$ gravity Palatini formalism. Here we consider three promising $f(\mathcal{R})$ gravity models viz., Starobinsky, Hu-Sawicki and Gogoi-Goswami models in the domain of MIT Bag model and linear equations of state (EoSs). We compute the stellar structures numerically and constrained the $f(\mathcal{R})$ model parameters with a set of probable strange star candidates. The study shows that the cons…
Gravitational waves are a sensitive probe into the structure of compact astronomical objects and the nature of gravity in the strong regime. Modifications of near-horizon physics can imprint on the late time ringdown waveform, leaving behind a train of echoes, from which useful information about new physics in the strong gravity regime can be extracted. We propose a novel approach to compute the ringdown waveform and characterize individual echoes perturbatively using the Fredholm determinants, which can be intuitively represented via a diagrammatical scheme. Direct non-perturbative treatments…
We explore the idea of asymptotic silence in causal set theory and find that causal sets approximated by continuum spacetimes exhibit behaviour akin to asymptotic silence. We make use of an intrinsic definition of spatial distance between causal set elements in the discrete analogue of a spatial hypersurface. Using numerical simulations for causal sets approximated by D=2,3 and 4 dimensional Minkowski spacetime, we show that while the discrete distance rapidly converges to the continuum distance at a scale roughly an order of magnitude larger than the discreteness scale, it is significantly la…
We have calculated the static and spherically symmetric solutions for compact stars in the $f(\mathcal{R},T)$ gravity metric formalism. To describe the matter of compact stars, we have used the MIT Bag model equation of state (EoS) and the color-flavor-locked (CFL) EoS. Solving the hydrostatic equilibrium equations i.e., the modified TOV equations in $f(\mathcal{R},T)$ gravity, we have obtained different stellar models. The mass-radius profiles for such stars are eventually discussed. The stability of these configurations are then analysed using different parameters. From the obtained solution…
Scalar-tensor theory predicts solutions to the gravitational field equations which describe compact objects in the presence of a non-minimally coupled scalar field to the Einstein tensor. These objects are black holes with scalar hair and wormholes supporting scalar phantom matter. The evolution of test fields in fixed asymptotically-flat backgrounds of exotic compact objects leads to the formation of echoes in the ringdown signal, which designate the existence of trapping regions close to the event horizon. Here, we consider minimally-coupled test scalar fields propagating on compact object s…
New theoretical approaches developed in the last years predict that macroscopic quantum gravity effects in black holes should lead to modifications of the gravitational wave signals expected in the framework of classical general relativity, with these modifications being characterized by the existence of dampened repetitions of the primary signal. Here we use the fact that non-perturbative corrections to the near-horizon external geometry of black holes are necessary for these modifications to exist, in order to classify different proposals and paradigms with respect to this criterion and stud…
Using conformal field theory and localization tecniques we study the propagation of waves in gravity backgrounds described by Schrödinger like equations with Fuchsian singularities. Exact formulae for the connection matrices relating the asymptotic behaviour of the wave functions near the singularities are obtained in terms of braiding and fusion rules of the CFT. The results are applied to the study of quasi normal modes, absorption cross sections, amplification factors, echoes and tidal responses of black holes (BH) and exotic compact objects (ECO) in four and five dimensions. In particular,…

We study echoes of free massless scalar from dyonic black holes in Einstein-Maxwell gravity extended with the quasi-topological electromagnetic term. These asymptotically-flat black holes all satisfy the dominant energy condition. We find that for suitable parameters, the effective potential can have double peaks and consequently echoes of quasinormal modes arise. In general the echo frequency associated with the initial wave packet released inside the two peaks is about twice the frequency of the one released outside.
Gravitational wave echoes from the black holes have been suggested as a crucial observable to probe the spacetime in the vicinity of the horizon. In particular, it was speculated that the echoes are closely connected with specific characteristics of the exotic compact objects, and moreover, possibly provide an access to the quantum nature of gravity. Recently, it was shown that the discontinuity in the black hole metric substantially modifies the asymptotical behavior of quasinormal frequencies. In the present study, we proceed further and argue that a discontinuity planted into the metric fur…
Gravitational wave (GW) ringdown waveforms may contain "echoes" that encode new physics in the strong gravity regime. It is commonly assumed that the new physics gives rise to the GW echoes whose intervals are constant. We point out that this assumption is not always applicable. In particular, if the post-merger object is initially a wormhole, which slowly pinches off and eventually collapses into a black hole, the late-time ringdown waveform exhibit a series of echoes whose intervals are increasing with time. We also assess how this affects the ability of Advanced LIGO/Virgo to detect these n…
A tentative detection of gravitational-wave echoes in the post-merger signal of GW170817 has been recently claimed at $4.2σ$ significance level. It has been speculated that the signal might provide evidence for near-horizon quantum structures in the remnant exotic object. We point out that if the remnant object is an ultracompact neutron star, echoes are expected for objects with radius only slightly smaller than that of an ordinary neutron star. The reported echoes at ~72 Hz are compatible with a toy model of incompressible star with mass approximately $M\in(2,3) M_\odot$ and radius close to …
The holographic interpretation of the Randall-Sundrum model based on the adaptation of the AdS/CFT correspondence to the braneworld scenario states that the black holes localized on the brane are {\it quantum corrected}. This can be better understood from the fact that the classical $AdS_{5}$ bulk dynamics is dual to gravity coupled with CFT on the four dimensional brane. Based on the back reaction of the CFT on the classical black hole geometry, localized on the brane, it is expected that there exist possible near horizon modifications. This may result in the black hole horizon becoming parti…
One of the most triumphant predictions of the theory if general relativity was the recent LIGO-Virgo detection of gravitational wave (GW) signals produced in binary black hole (BH) mergers. However, it is suggested that exotic compact objects, proposed in quantum gravity models of BHs, may produce similar classical GW waveforms, followed by delayed repeating "echoes". In a companion paper [1], we have presented different arguments for a universal Boltzmann reflectivity of quantum BH horizons. Here, we investigate the resulting echoes from this prescription. We derive corresponding quasi-normal…
We consider a very simple model for gravitational wave echoes from black hole merger ringdowns which may arise from local Lorentz symmetry violations that modify graviton dispersion relations. If the corrections are sufficiently soft so they do not remove the horizon, the reflection of the infalling waves which trigger the echoes is very weak. As an example, we look at the dispersion relation of a test scalar field corrected by roton-like operators depending only on spatial momenta, in Gullstrand-Painlevé coordinates. The near-horizon regions of a black hole do become reflective, but only very…
The ability to detect and scrutinize gravitational waves from the merger and coalescence of compact binaries opens up the possibility to perform tests of fundamental physics. One such test concerns the dark, nature of compact objects: are they really black holes? It was recently pointed out that the absence of horizons -- while keeping the external geometry very close to that of General Relativity -- would manifest itself in a series of echoes in gravitational wave signals. The observation of echoes by LIGO/Virgo or upcoming facilities would likely inform us on quantum gravity effects or unsee…
Recently it has been argued that near-horizon modifications of the standard (classical) black hole spacetime could lead to observable alterations of the gravitational waveform generated by a binary black hole coalescence. Such modifications can be inspired by quantum gravity considerations, resulting in speculative horizonless exotic compact objects (ECOs) with no singularities, which may be an alternative to the classical black hole solution. A largely model-independent description of these objects proposed in the literature relies on the introduction of a partially reflective wall at some sm…
It is often said that there is no gravity theory based on local action principles giving rise to firewall black hole solutions. Additionally, Guo and Mathur 2022 (2205.10921) have cast doubt on the observability of firewall echoes due to closed trapped surface produced by backreaction of macroscopic in-falling wave packets. In this paper, we bring Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton action as a toy model that serves as counterexample to these assertions. Actions with Maxwell and dilaton fields emerge from several fundamental theories, such as the low energy limit of (super) string theory or Kaluza-Klein …
Quantum nature of black hole horizons has been a subject of recent interest and scrutiny. In particular, a near-horizon quantum violation of the equivalence principle has been proposed as a resolution of the black hole information paradox. Such a violation may lead to a modified dispersion relation at high energies, which could become relevant due to the intense gravitational blueshift experienced by ingoing gravitational waves. We investigate the ringdown for a perturbed black hole with such a modified dispersion relation and find that infalling gravitational waves are partially reflected nea…
In classical General Relativity (GR), an observer falling into an astrophysical black hole is not expected to experience anything dramatic as she crosses the event horizon. However, tentative resolutions to problems in quantum gravity, such as the cosmological constant problem, or the black hole information paradox, invoke significant departures from classicality in the vicinity of the horizon. It was recently pointed out that such near-horizon structures can lead to late-time echoes in the black hole merger gravitational wave signals that are otherwise indistinguishable from GR. We search for…
In this paper, we will analyze the energy dependent deformation of massive gravity using the formalism of massive gravity's rainbow. So, we will use the Vainshtein mechanism and the dRGT mechanism for the energy dependent massive gravity, and thus analyze a ghost free theory of massive gravity's rainbow. We study the energy dependence of a time-dependent geometry, by analyzing the radiating Vaidya solution in this theory of massive gravity's rainbow. The energy dependent deformation of this Vaidya metric will be performed using suitable rainbow functions.
Gravitational wave `echoes' during black-hole merging events have been advocated as possible signals of modifications to gravity in the strong-field (but semiclassical) regime. In these proposals the observable effect comes entirely from the appearance of nonzero reflection probability at the horizon, which vanishes for a standard black hole. We show how to apply EFT reasoning to these arguments, using and extending earlier work for localized systems that relates choices of boundary condition to the action for the physics responsible for these boundary conditions. EFT reasoning applied to this…
Gravitational wave echoes, if they exist, could encode important information of new physics from the strong gravity regime. Current echo searches usually assume constant interval echoes (CIEs) a priori, although unequal interval echoes (UIEs) are also possible. Despite of its simplicity, the using of CIE templates need to be properly justified, especially given the high sensitivity of future gravitational wave detectors. In this paper, we assess the necessity of UIE templates in echo searches. By reconstructing injected UIE signals with both CIE and UIE templates, we show that the CIE template…
A Dirac spinor is coupled to topologically massive gravity and the D=3 dimensional action is reduced to D=2 dimensions with a metric that includes both the electromagnetic potential 1-form A and a dilaton scalar ϕ. The dimensionnaly reduced spinor is made a mass eigenstate with a (local) chiral rotation. The non-trivial interactions thus induced are discussed.
A detailed study of the various cosmological aspects in massive gravity theory has been presented in the present work. For the homogeneous and isotropic FLRW model, the deceleration parameter has been evaluated, and, it has been examined whether there is any transition from deceleration to acceleration in recent past, or not. With the proper choice of the free parameters, it has been shown that the massive gravity theory is equivalent to Einstein gravity with a modified Newtonian gravitational constant together with a negative cosmological constant. Also, in this context, it has been examined …
First, we obtain the plane wave solution of the linearized massive conformal gravity field equations. It is shown that the theory has seven physical plane waves. In addition, we investigate the gravitational radiation from binary systems in massive conformal gravity. We find that the theory with large graviton mass can reproduce the orbit of binaries by the emission of gravitational waves.
We study the entropy spectrum of (2+1) BTZ black holes in massive gravity models. We use the formalism proposed by Jiang and Han where black hole property of adiabaticity and the oscillating velocity of the black hole horizon are used to investigate the quantization of the entropy of such systems. We find that the entropy of the BTZ black holes in massive gravity is quantized with equally spaced spectra.
By using the algebra of exterior forms and the first order formalism with constraints, an alternative derivation of the field equations for the Minimal massive 3D gravity model is presented.
Impulsive, non-diverging, Petrov-Segre type N gravitational wave solutions to a general massive three-dimensional gravity in the de Sitter, anti-de Sitter and flat Minkowski backgrounds are constructed in a unified manner by using the exterior algebra of differential forms.
We calculate explicitly the black-hole temperature for the Schwarzschild de-Sitter solution inside massive gravity by defining the Killing-vector in the direction of the Stückelberg function. We then consider the conditions which an observer in massive gravity has to obey in order to agree with the standard results of General Relativity.
The quadratic curvature lagrangians having metric field equations with second order trace are constructed relative to an orthonormal coframe. In $n>4$ dimensions, pure quadratic curvature lagrangian having second order trace constructed contains three free parameters in the most general case. The fourth order field equations of some of these models, in arbitrary dimensions, are cast in a particular form using the Schouten tensor. As a consequence, the field equations for the New massive gravity theory are related to those of the Topologically massive gravity. In particular, the conditions unde…
We analyse the Dirac equation for slow fermions coupled to linearised massive gravity above the Minkowski background and derive the effective low-energy gravitational potential. The obtained results can be used in terrestrial laboratories for the detection of gravitational waves and fluxes of massive gravitons emitted by cosmological objects. We also calculate the neutron spin precession within linearised massive gravity, which in principle can be measured by neutron interferometers.
We continue our investigation of massive gravity in the massless limit of vanishing graviton mass. From gauge invariance we derive the most general coupling between scalar matter and gravity. We get further couplings beside the standard coupling to the energy-momentum tensor. On the classical level this leads to a further modification of general relativity.
We include a Chern-Simons term in a GL(3,R) gauge formulation of gravity with a cosmological contribution in 2+1 dimension and we explore consistence showing that excitations must be causal and standard topological massive gravity is recovered from this type of construction at the torsionless limit.
We obtain a general class of exact solutions to topologically massive gravity with or without a negative cosmological constant. In the first case, we show that the solution is supersymmetric and asymptotically approaches the extremal BTZ black hole solution, while in the latter case it goes to flat space-time.
Spherical gravitational wave is strictly forbidden in vacuum space in frame of general relativity by the Birkhoff theorem. We prove that spherical gravitational waves do exist in non-linear massive gravity, and find the exact solution. Further more, we find exact gravitational wave solution with a singular string by meticulous studies of familiar equation, in which the horizon becomes non-compact. We analyze the properties of the congruence of graviton rays of these wave solution. We clarify subtle points of dispersion relation, velocity and mass of graviton in massive gravity with linear pert…
Recently, the static spherically symmetric solution of the gravitational field equations have been found in theories describing massive graviton with spontaneous breaking of the Lorentz invariance. These solutions, which show off two integration constants instead of one in General Relativity, are discussed. They are candidates for modified black holes provided they are stable against small perturbations. These solutions may have both attractive or repulsive behavior at large distances. Therefore, these modified black holes may mimics the presence of dark matter or be a source of anti-gravity.
The Kerr/CFT correspondence is a possible route to gain insight into the quantum theory of gravity in the near-horizon region of a Kerr black hole via a dual holographic conformal field theory (CFT). Predictions of the black hole entropy, scattering cross-section and the quasi normal modes from the dual holographic CFT corroborate this proposed correspondence. More recently, it has been suggested that quantum gravitational effects in the near-horizon region of a black hole may drastically modify the classical general relativistic description, leading to potential observable consequences. In th…
