Gravitational wave (GW) ringdown waveforms may contain "echoes" that encode new physics in the strong gravity regime. It is commonly assumed that the new physics gives rise to the GW echoes whose intervals are constant. We point out that this assumption is not always applicable. In particular, if the post-merger object is initially a wormhole, which slowly pinches off and eventually collapses into a black hole, the late-time ringdown waveform exhibit a series of echoes whose intervals are increasing with time. We also assess how this affects the ability of Advanced LIGO/Virgo to detect these new signals.
Recently the possibility of detecting echoes of ringdown gravitational waves from binary black hole mergers was shown. The presence of echoes is expected if the black hole is surrounded by a mirror that reflects gravitational waves near the horizon. Here, we present slightly more sophisticated templates motivated by a waveform which is obtained by solving the linear perturbation equation around a Kerr black hole with a complete reflecting boundary condition in the stationary traveling wave approximation. We estimate that the proposed template can bring about $10\%$ improvement in the signal-to…
The holographic interpretation of the Randall-Sundrum model based on the adaptation of the AdS/CFT correspondence to the braneworld scenario states that the black holes localized on the brane are {\it quantum corrected}. This can be better understood from the fact that the classical $AdS_{5}$ bulk dynamics is dual to gravity coupled with CFT on the four dimensional brane. Based on the back reaction of the CFT on the classical black hole geometry, localized on the brane, it is expected that there exist possible near horizon modifications. This may result in the black hole horizon becoming parti…
Quantum nature of black hole horizons has been a subject of recent interest and scrutiny. In particular, a near-horizon quantum violation of the equivalence principle has been proposed as a resolution of the black hole information paradox. Such a violation may lead to a modified dispersion relation at high energies, which could become relevant due to the intense gravitational blueshift experienced by ingoing gravitational waves. We investigate the ringdown for a perturbed black hole with such a modified dispersion relation and find that infalling gravitational waves are partially reflected nea…
Deep conceptual problems associated with classical black holes can be addressed in string theory by the ``fuzzball'' paradigm, which provides a microscopic description of a black hole in terms of a thermodynamically large number of regular, horizonless, geometries with much less symmetry than the corresponding black hole. Motivated by the tantalizing possibility to observe quantum gravity signatures near astrophysical compact objects in this scenario, we perform the first $3+1$ numerical simulations of a scalar field propagating on a large class of multicenter geometries with no spatial isomet…
We show that the higher order curvature corrections to general relativity in the strong gravity regime of near horizon scales produce a rapidly oscillating and infalling Ricci scalar fireball just outside the horizon. This can generate the ringdown modes of gravitational waves having the same natural frequency as those which are generated by the black hole mergers. Our analysis provides a viable explanation to the echoes in the ringdown modes recently detected from the LIGO data, without invoking the existence of any exotic structures at the horizon.
Gravitational waves are a sensitive probe into the structure of compact astronomical objects and the nature of gravity in the strong regime. Modifications of near-horizon physics can imprint on the late time ringdown waveform, leaving behind a train of echoes, from which useful information about new physics in the strong gravity regime can be extracted. We propose a novel approach to compute the ringdown waveform and characterize individual echoes perturbatively using the Fredholm determinants, which can be intuitively represented via a diagrammatical scheme. Direct non-perturbative treatments…
In the context of higher dimensional braneworld scenario, we have argued that the occurrence of horizonless exotic compact objects, as an alternative to classical black holes, are more natural. These exotic compact objects carry a distinctive signature of the higher dimension, namely a tidal charge parameter, inherited from the projection of the higher dimensional Weyl tensor onto the four dimensional spacetime we live in. Due to the absence of any horizon, rotating exotic compact objects are often unstable because of superradiance. Interestingly, these higher dimensional exotic compact object…
We consider a very simple model for gravitational wave echoes from black hole merger ringdowns which may arise from local Lorentz symmetry violations that modify graviton dispersion relations. If the corrections are sufficiently soft so they do not remove the horizon, the reflection of the infalling waves which trigger the echoes is very weak. As an example, we look at the dispersion relation of a test scalar field corrected by roton-like operators depending only on spatial momenta, in Gullstrand-Painlevé coordinates. The near-horizon regions of a black hole do become reflective, but only very…
Though the cosmic censorship conjecture states that spacetime singularities must be hidden from an asymptotic observer by an event horizon, naked singularities can form as the end product of a gravitational collapse under suitable initial conditions, so the question of how to observationally distinguish such naked singularities from standard black hole spacetimes becomes important. In the present paper, we try to address this question by studying the ringdown profile of the Janis-Newman-Winicour (JNW) naked singularity under axial gravitational perturbation. The JNW spacetime has a surfacelike…
Gravitational wave (GW) echoes, if they exist, would be a probe to the near-horizon quantum structure of black hole (BH), which has motivated the searching for the echo signals in GW data. We point out that the echo phenomenology related with the potential structure might be not so simple as expected. In particular, if the near-horizon regime of BH is modelled as a multiple-barriers filter, the late-time GW ringdown waveform will exhibit the mixing of echoes, even the superpositions. As a result, the amplitudes of successive echoes might not drop sequentially.
Quasinormal modes describe the return to equilibrium of a perturbed system, in particular the ringdown phase of a black hole merger. But as globally-defined quantities, the quasinormal spectrum can be highly sensitive to global structure, including distant small perturbations to the potential. In what sense are quasinormal modes a property of the resulting black hole? We explore this question for the linearized perturbation equation with two potentials having disjoint bounded support. We give a composition law for the Wronskian that determines the quasinormal frequencies of the combined system…
Gravitational wave (GW) echoes, if they exist, would be a probe to the near-horizon physics of black hole. In this brief report, we performed the Monte Carlo Markov Chain analysis to search for echo signal in all GWTC-1 and O3 GW events. We focus on the Insprial-Merger-Ringdown-Echo (IMRE) waveform, and apply the Bayesian model selection to compare the IMRE result with IMR's (no echo). We find no statistically significant ($<1σ$ combined) evidence for the GW echoes and only individual GW events with the echoes at $1\sim 2σ$ significance.
Motivated by capturing putative quantum effects at the horizon scale, we model the black hole horizon as a membrane with fluctuations following a Gaussian profile. By extending the membrane paradigm at the semiclassical level, we show that the quantum nature of the black hole horizon implies partially reflective boundary conditions and a frequency-dependent reflectivity. This generically results into a modified quasi-normal mode spectrum and the existence of echoes in the postmerger signal. On a similar note, we derive the horizon boundary condition for a braneworld black hole that could origi…
The ringdown of the gravitational-wave signal from a merger of two black holes has been suggested as a probe of the structure of the remnant compact object, which may be more exotic than a black hole. It has been pointed out that there will be a train of echoes in the late-time ringdown stage for different types of exotic compact objects. In this paper, we present a template-based search methodology using Bayesian statistics to search for echoes of gravitational waves. Evidence for the presence or absence of echoes in gravitational-wave events can be established by performing Bayesian model se…
General relativity admits a plethora of exact compact object solutions. The augmentation of Einstein's action with non-minimal coupling terms leads to modified theories with rich structure, which, in turn, provide non-trivial solutions with intriguing phenomenology. Thus, assessing their viability under generic fluctuations is of utmost importance for gravity theories. We consider static and spherically-symmetric solutions of a Horndeski subclass which includes a massless scalar field non-minimally coupled to the Einstein tensor. Such theory possesses second-order field equations and admits an…
Gravitational-wave echoes in the post-merger ringdown phase are under intense scrutiny as probes of near-horizon quantum structures and as signatures of exotic states of matter in ultracompact stars. We present an analytical template that describes the ringdown and the echo signal for nonspinning objects in terms of two physical parameters: the reflectivity and the redshift at the surface of the object. We characterize the properties of the template and adopt it in a preliminary parameter estimation with current (aLIGO) and future (Cosmic Explorer, Einstein Telescope, LISA) gravitational-wave …
The behavior of hairy black hole solutions, obtained by the gravitational decoupling (GD) method, is investigated under scalar perturbations. The quasinormal mode frequencies of such solutions are regulated by GD hair. The numerically generated wave solutions are derived for a range of values for the GD hairy black hole parameters, with higher-frequency modes very sensitive to them. The results are confronted with the corresponding ones for the Schwarzschild solution, whose deviations from it demonstrate a unique physical identification of GD hairy black holes. The method here presented compri…
It has been recently shown that observing pulses isolated from the gravitational radiation transient (also known as echoes) would prove the existence of exotic compact objects (ECOs). Many features of the ringdown signal can be reproduced by simulating a scattering problem instead of the full coalescence of ECOs. In this paper, we study the dynamics of scalar and tensor wavepackets colliding against a spherically symmetric Morris-Thorne wormhole. Our aim is to extract the features of the time-dependent scattering solutions inside and outside the effective potential cavity in addition to their …
Gravitational waves are rapidly becoming a very reliable tool for testing alternative theories of gravity. In particular, features in the gravitational wave emission during black hole ringdown phase provide a direct probe of the spacetime outside the black hole. In this article, we consider black holes in ghost-free massive gravity. These black holes generically have scalar hair. We found that a simple coupling between gravitational perturbations and this scalar hair can change the quasinormal ringing of the black hole, and in particular, produce echoes in the emitted gravitational waves. This…
With the advent of gravitational wave astronomy, searching for gravitational wave echoes from black holes (BHs) is becoming an interesting probe of their quantum nature near their horizons. Newborn BHs may be strong emitters of echoes, as they accompany large perturbations in the surrounding spacetime upon formation. Utilizing the Quantum Black Hole Seismology framework (Oshita et al. 2020), we study the expected echoes upon BH formation resulting from neutron star mergers and failed supernovae. For BH remnants from neutron star mergers, we evaluate the consistency of these models with the rec…
It is well known that a hypothetical compact object that looks like an Einsteinian (Schwarzschild or Kerr) black hole everywhere except a small region near its surface should have the ringdown profile predicted by the Einstein theory at early and intermediate times, but modified by the so-called echoes at late times. A similar phenomenon appears when one considers an Einsteinian black hole and a shell of matter placed at some distance from it, so that astrophysical estimates could be made for the allowed mass of the black hole environment. While echoes for both systems have been extensively st…
We construct a star with uniform density in frame of tracking Rastall gravity, in which the density of effective dark matter tracks the density of dark energy. To demonstrate stability of the star we analyse the axial gravitational perturbations of the star. We find that echo wavelets naturally appear in the axial gravitational waves when the dark matter plays a significant role in construction of the star. We show that the physical origin of this echo roots in the potential valley near the surface of star. This effect leads to a clue to detect Rastall dark energy from the ringdown phase of gr…
The existence of black hole horizons has not been strictly proven observationally, and indeed it may not be possible to do so. However, alternatives may be established by the observation of gravitational wave echoes that probe possible near-horizon structure. These echoes are proposed to be generated in exotic compact objects that are horizonless and feature a partially reflecting "wall" inside their light rings, creating a cavity in which gravitational perturbations may echo, while leaking out through the angular momentum barrier with each pass. The characteristic signature of echoes is a com…
Gravitational-wave echoes in the post-merger signal of a binary coalescence are predicted in various scenarios, including near-horizon quantum structures, exotic states of matter in ultracompact stars, and certain deviations from general relativity. The amplitude and frequency of each echo is modulated by the photon-sphere barrier of the remnant, which acts as a spin- and frequency-dependent high-pass filter, decreasing the frequency content of each subsequent echo. Furthermore, a major fraction of the energy of the echo signal is contained in low-frequency resonances corresponding to the quas…
Gravitational waves from binary coalescences provide one of the cleanest signatures of the nature of compact objects. It has been recently argued that the post-merger ringdown waveform of exotic ultracompact objects is initially identical to that of a black-hole, and that putative corrections at the horizon scale will appear as secondary pulses after the main burst of radiation. Here we extend this analysis in three important directions: (i) we show that this result applies to a large class of exotic compact objects with a photon sphere for generic orbits in the test-particle limit; (ii) we in…
Gravitational wave astronomy provides an unprecedented opportunity to test the nature of black holes and search for exotic, compact alternatives. Recent studies have shown that exotic compact objects (ECOs) can ring down in a manner similar to black holes, but can also produce a sequence of distinct pulses resembling the initial ringdown. These "echoes" would provide definite evidence for the existence of ECOs. In this work we study the generation of these echoes in a generic, parametrized model for the ECO, using Green's functions. We show how to reprocess radiation in the near-horizon region…
At the dawn of a golden age for gravitational wave astronomy, we must leave no stone unturned in our quest for new phenomena beyond our current understanding of General Relativity (GR), particle physics and nuclear physics. In this paper we discuss gravitational echoes from ultracompact stars. We restrict our analysis to exact solutions of Einstein field equations in GR that are supported by physically motivated equations of state (EoS), and in particular we impose the constraint of causality. Our main conclusion is that ultracompact objects supported by physical EoS are not able to generate g…

New theoretical approaches developed in the last years predict that macroscopic quantum gravity effects in black holes should lead to modifications of the gravitational wave signals expected in the framework of classical general relativity, with these modifications being characterized by the existence of dampened repetitions of the primary signal. Here we use the fact that non-perturbative corrections to the near-horizon external geometry of black holes are necessary for these modifications to exist, in order to classify different proposals and paradigms with respect to this criterion and stud…
We present numerical waveforms of gravitational-wave echoes from spinning exotic compact objects (ECOs) that result from binary black hole coalescence. We obtain these echoes by solving the Teukolsky equation for the $ψ_4$ associated with gravitational waves that propagate toward the horizon of a Kerr spacetime, and process the subsequent reflections of the horizon-going wave by the surface of the ECO, which lies right above the Kerr horizon. The trajectories of the infalling objects are modified from Kerr geodesics, such that the gravitational waves propagating toward future null infinity mat…
While recent detections of gravitational waves from the mergers of binary black holes match well with the predictions of General Relativity (GR), they cannot directly confirm the existence of event horizons. Exotic compact objects (ECOs) are motivated by quantum models of black holes, and can have exotic structure (or a "wall") just outside the (would-be) horizon. ECOs produce similar ringdown waveforms to the GR black holes, but they are followed by delayed "echoes". By solving linearized Einstein equations we can model these echoes and provide analytic templates that can be used to compare t…

We first use five non-spinning and two mildly spinning (chi_i \simeq -0.44, +0.44) numerical-relativity waveforms of black-hole binaries and calibrate an effective-one-body (EOB) model for non-precessing spinning binaries, notably its dynamics and the dominant (2,2) gravitational-wave mode. Then, we combine the above results with recent outcomes of small-mass-ratio simulations produced by the Teukolsky equation and build a prototype EOB model for detection purposes, which is capable of generating inspiral-merger-ringdown waveforms for non-precessing spinning black-hole binaries with any mass r…
Observations of gravitational waves (GWs) by the advanced LIGO--Virgo detectors provide us with ground breaking opportunities to test predictions of Einstein's theory of general relativity (GR) in the strong field regime. In this article, we summarise the nine tests of GR performed on the new GW signals included in the third GW transient catalog, GWTC-3. These tests include overall and self-consistency checks of the signal with the data; tests of the GW generation, propagation and polarizations; and probes of the nature of the remnant object by testing the BH ringdown hypothesis and searching …
The upcoming detection of gravitational waves by terrestrial interferometers will usher in the era of gravitational-wave astronomy. This will be particularly true when space-based detectors will come of age and measure the mass and spin of massive black holes with exquisite precision and up to very high redshifts, thus allowing for better understanding of the symbiotic evolution of black holes with galaxies, and for high-precision tests of General Relativity in strong-field, highly dynamical regimes. Such ambitious goals require that astrophysical environmental pollution of gravitational-wave …
We introduce \TEOBiResumSM{}, a nonspinning inspiral-merger-ringdown waveform model built within the effective one body (EOB) framework that includes gravitational waveform modes beyond the dominant quadrupole $(\ell,|m|) = (2,2)$. The model incorporates: (i) an improved Padé resummation of the factorized waveform amplitudes $ρ_{\ell m}^{\rm orb}$ entering the EOB-resummed waveform where the 3PN, mass-ratio dependent, terms are hybridized with test-mass limit terms up to 6PN relative order for most of the multipoles up to $\ell=6$ included; (ii) an improved determination of the effective 5PN f…
Searching for a signal depending on unknown parameters in a noisy background with matched filtering techniques always requires an analysis of the data with several templates in parallel in order to ensure a proper match between the filter and the real waveform. The key feature of such an implementation is the design of the filter bank which must be small to limit the computational cost while keeping the detection efficiency as high as possible. This paper presents a geometrical method which allows one to cover the corresponding physical parameter space by a set of ellipses, each of them being …
