We study the stability of an asymptotically flat, static, spherically symmetric naked singularity spacetime in the novel four dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet (EGB) gravity. The four dimensional EGB black hole for large enough values of the coupling parameter leads to such a naked singularity. The stability and the response of the spacetime is studied against the perturbations by test scalar, electromagnetic and Dirac fields and the time evolution of these perturbations were observed numerically. Implementing a null Dirichlet boundary condition near the singularity, we observed that for l=1 modes of scalar, electromagnetic perturbation and l=0,1 modes of Dirac perturbation the time-domain profile give rise to distinct echoes. However, as the coupling constant is increased, the echoes align and the QNM structure of the 4D-EGB naked singularity-spacetime becomes prominent. For higher values of the multipole number, the spacetime becomes unstable, thereby restricting the parameter space for the coupling parameter.
Though the cosmic censorship conjecture states that spacetime singularities must be hidden from an asymptotic observer by an event horizon, naked singularities can form as the end product of a gravitational collapse under suitable initial conditions, so the question of how to observationally distinguish such naked singularities from standard black hole spacetimes becomes important. In the present paper, we try to address this question by studying the ringdown profile of the Janis-Newman-Winicour (JNW) naked singularity under axial gravitational perturbation. The JNW spacetime has a surfacelike…
We add a Gauss-Bonnet term to the Einstein-Hilbert action and study the recent proposal to solve the cosmological constant problem. We also consider the possibility of adding a dilaton potential to the action. In the absence of supersymmetry, we obtain first order Bogomol'nyi equation as a solution-generating method in our scenario. When the coefficient of the Gauss-Bonnet term is positive, the dilaton potential is bounded below. Assuming a simple double-well potential, the dilaton field is found to be a kink in the fifth dimension.
We give a model of the higher-dimensional spherically symmetric gravitational collapse of a dust cloud in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity. A simple formulation of the basic equations is given for the spacetime $M \approx M^2 \times K^{n-2}$ with a perfect fluid and a cosmological constant. This is a generalization of the Misner-Sharp formalism of the four-dimensional spherically symmetric spacetime with a perfect fluid in general relativity. The whole picture and the final fate of the gravitational collapse of a dust cloud differ greatly between the cases with $n=5$ and $n \ge 6$. There are two …
We obtain a general spherically symmetric solution of a null dust fluid in $n (\geq 4)$-dimensions in Gauss-Bonnet gravity. This solution is a generalization of the $n$-dimensional Vaidya-(anti)de Sitter solution in general relativity. For $n=4$, the Gauss-Bonnet term in the action does not contribute to the field equations, so that the solution coincides with the Vaidya-(anti)de Sitter solution. Using the solution for $n \ge 5$ with a specific form of the mass function, we present a model for a gravitational collapse in which a null dust fluid radially injects into an initially flat and empty…
We show that the black hole solutions of the effective string theory action, where one-loop effects that couple the moduli to gravity via a Gauss-Bonnet term are taken into account, admit primary scalar hair. The requirement of absence of naked singularities imposes an upper bound on the scalar charges.
In this paper, we study spherical gravitational collapse of inhomogeneous pressureless matter in a well-defined $n \rightarrow4$d limit of the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity. The collapse leads to either a black hole or a massive naked singularity depending on time of formation of trapped surfaces. More precisely, horizon formation and its time development is controlled by relative strengths of the Gauss-Bonnet coupling $(λ)$ and the Misner-Sharp mass function $F(r,t)$ of collapsing sphere. We find that, if there is no trapped surfaces on the initial Cauchy hypersurface and $F(r,t)< 2\sqrtλ$, t…
We study the asymptotic behavior of the spherically symmetric solutions of the system obtained from the dimensional reduction of the six-dimensional Einstein- Gauss-Bonnet action. We show that in general the scalar field that parametrizes the size of the internal space is not trivial, but nevertheless the solutions depend on a single parameter. In analogy with other models containing Gauss-Bonnet terms, naked singularities are avoided if a minimal radius for the horizon is assumed.
We study the optical appearance of a thin accretion disk around compact objects within the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity. Considering static spherically symmetric black holes and naked singularities we search for characteristic signatures which can arise in the observable images due to the modification of general relativity. While the images of the Gauss-Bonnet black holes closely resemble the Schwarzschild black hole, naked singularities possess a distinctive feature. A series of bright rings are formed in the central part of the images with observable radiation $10^3$ times larger than the r…
The Einstein Gauss-Bonnet theory of gravity is the low energy limit of heterotic super-symmetric string theory. This paper deals gravitational collapse of perfect fluid in Einstein Gauss-Bonnet gravity by considering the Lemaitre - Tolman - Bondi metric. For this purpose, the closed form of exact solution of equations of motion has been determined by using the conservation of stress-energy tensor and the condition of marginally bound shells. It has been investigated that the presence of Gauss-Bonnet coupling term $α>0$ and pressure of the fluid modifies the structure and time formation of sing…
We present the asymptotically AdS solutions of Gauss-Bonnet gravity with hyperbolic horizon in the presence of a non-Abelian Yang-Mills field with the gauge semisimple group $So(n(n-1)/2-1,1)$. We investigate the properties of these solutions and find that the non-negative mass solutions in 6 and higher dimensions are real everywhere with spacelike singularities. They present black holes with one horizon and have the same causal structure as the Schwarzschild spacetime. The solutions in 5 dimensions or the solutions in higher dimensions with negative mass are not real everywhere. In these case…
We present a new type of ultracompact objects, featuring lightrings and echoes in the gravitational-wave spectrum. These particle-like solutions arise in Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet theories in four spacetime dimensions, representing globally regular spacetime manifolds. The scalar field diverges at the center, but the effective stress-energy tensor is free from pathologies. We determine their domain of existence and compare with wormhole solutions, black holes and the Fisher solution.
We obtain a general five dimensional (5D) quasispherical solutions of irrotational dust in Einstein gravity with the Gauss-Bonnet combination of quadratic curvature terms. These solutions are generalization, to Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity, of the 5D quasispherical Szkeres like solutions in general relativity. It is found that the collapse proceed in the same way as in the analogous spherical collapse, i.e., there exists a regular initial data such that the collapse proceed to form naked singularities violating cosmic censorship conjecture. The effect of Gauss-Bonnet quadratic curvature terms…
We encounter these demons on the path towards a UV complete QFT of gravity and a horizonless replacement for black holes. The fate of the ghost is discussed in the strong coupling version of classically-scale-invariant quadratic gravity. Rather than a propagating ghost, the full graviton propagator ends up with a slight acausal behavior. We then turn to the 2-2-hole solutions appearing in a classical approximation of the gravity theory. We present a new solution that is sourced by a relativistic gas, where a benign timelike singularity is shrouded by a fireball. Calculating the standard entrop…
An Oppenheimer-Snyder (OS)-type collapse is considered for a Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati (DGP) brane, whereas a Gauss-Bonnet (GB) term is provided for the bulk. We study the combined effect of the DGP induced gravity plus the GB curvature, regarding any modification of the general relativistic OS dynamics. Our paper has a twofold objective. On the one hand, we investigate the nature of singularities that may arise at the collapse end state. It is shown that all dynamical scenarios for the contracting brane would end in one of the following cases, depending on conditions imposed: either a central s…
We explore the gravitational collapse of a spherically symmetric dust cloud in the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity without a cosmological constant, and obtain three families of LTB-like solutions. It is shown that the Gauss-Bonnet term has a profound influence on the nature of singularities, and the global structure of space-time changes drastically from the analogous general relativistic case. Interestingly, the formation of a naked, massive and uncentral singularity, allowed in 5-dimensional space-time, is forbidden if $D\geq6$. Moreover, such singularity is gravitational strong and a serious …
We consider black-string-type solutions in five-dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity. Numerically constructed solutions under static, axially symmetric and translationally invariant metric ansatz are presented. The solutions are specified by two asymptotic charges: mass of a black string and a scalar charge associated with the radion part of the metric. Regular black string solutions are found if and only if the two charges satisfy a fine-tuned relation, and otherwise the spacetime develops a singular event horizon or a naked singularity. We can also generate bubble solutions from the bla…
AdS spacetime has been shown numerically to be unstable against a large class of arbitrarily small perturbations. In arXiv:1410.1869, the authors presented a preliminary study of the effects on stability of changing the local dynamics by adding a Gauss-Bonnet term to the Einstein action. Here we provide further details as well as new results with improved numerical methods. In particular, we elucidate new structure in Choptuik scaling plots. We also provide evidence of chaotic behavior at the transition between immediate horizon formation and horizon formation after the matter pulse reflects f…
In this paper, we present a class of rotating solutions in Gauss--Bonnet gravity in the presence of cosmological constant and conformally invariant Maxwell field and study the effects of the nonlinearity of the Maxwell source on the properties of the spacetimes. These solutions may be interpret as black brane solutions with inner and outer event horizons provide that the mass parameter $m$ is greater than an extremal value $m_{ext}$, an extreme black brane if $m=m_{ext}$ and a naked singularity otherwise. We investigate the conserved and thermodynamics quantities for asymptotically flat and as…
We study static black hole solutions in Einstein and Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity with product two-spheres topology, ${\bf SO(n) \times SO(n)}$, in higher dimensions. There is an unusual new feature of Gauss-Bonnet black hole that the avoidance of non-central naked singularity prescribes a mass range for black hole in terms of $Λ>0$. For Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet black hole a limited window of negative values for $Λ$ is also permitted. This topology encompasses black string and brane as well as a generalized Nariai metric. We also give new solutions with product two-spheres of constant curvatures…
We propose a class of higher-derivative gravities that can be viewed as the Gauss-Bonnet extension of the Starobinsky model. The theory admits the Minkowski spacetime vacuum whose linear spectrum consists of the graviton and a massive scalar mode. In addition to the usual Schwarzschild black hole, we use numerical analysis to establish that in some suitable mass range, new black holes carrying the massive scalar hair can emerge. The new black hole serves as a "wall" separating the naked spacetime singularity and wormholes in the parameter space of the scalar hair. Our numerical results also in…
In this paper, we analyze the deflection angle of light by Brane-Dicke wormhole in the weak field limit approximation to find the effect of the Brane-Dicke coupling parameter on the weak gravitation lensing. For this purpose, we consider new geometric techniques, i.e., Gauss-Bonnet theorem and optical geometry in order to calculate the deflection angle. Furthermore, we verify our results by considering the most familiar geodesic technique. Moreover, we establish the quantum corrected metric of Brane-Dicke wormhole by replacing the classical geodesic with Bohmian trajectories, whose matter sour…
We study the gravitational deflection of relativistic massive particles by Janis-Newman-Winicour (JNW) spacetimes (also known as a rotating source with a surface-like naked singularity), and a rotating Kerr-like wormholes. Based on the recent article [K. Jusufi, Phys. Rev. D 98, 064017 (2018)], we extend some of these results by exploring the effects of naked singularity and Kerr-like objects on the deflection of particles. We start by introducing coordinate transformation leading to an isotropic line element which gives the refraction index of light for the corresponding optical medias. On th…
In this work, we have assumed the generalized Vaidya solution in Lovelock theory of gravity in $(n+2)$-dimensions. It has been shown that Gauss-Bonnet gravity, dimensionally continued Lovelock gravity and pure Lovelock gravity can be constructed by suitable choice of parameters. We have investigated the occurrence of singularities formed by the gravitational collapse in above three particular forms of Lovelock theory of gravity. The dependence of the nature of singularity on the existence of radial null geodesic for Vaidya space-time has been specially considered. In all the three models, we h…
Besides scalarized black holes and wormholes, Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet theories allow also for particle-like solutions. The scalar field of these particle-like solutions diverges at the origin, akin to the divergence of the Coulomb potential at the location of a charged particle. However, these particle-like solutions possess a globally regular metric, and their effective stress energy tensor is free from pathologies, as well. We determine the domain of existence for particle-like solutions in a number of Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet theories, considering dilatonic and power-law coupling f…
New theoretical approaches developed in the last years predict that macroscopic quantum gravity effects in black holes should lead to modifications of the gravitational wave signals expected in the framework of classical general relativity, with these modifications being characterized by the existence of dampened repetitions of the primary signal. Here we use the fact that non-perturbative corrections to the near-horizon external geometry of black holes are necessary for these modifications to exist, in order to classify different proposals and paradigms with respect to this criterion and stud…
Inspired by the Lifshitz gravity as a theory with anisotropic scaling behavior, we suggest a new $(n+1)-$dimensional metric in which the time and spatial coordinates scale anisotropically as $(t,r,θ_{i})\,\to (λ^{z}t,λ^{-1}r,λ^{x_i}\,θ_{i})$. Due to the anisotropic scaling dimension of the spatial coordinates, this spacetime does not support the full Schrödinger symmetry group. We look for the analytical solution of Gauss-Bonnet gravity in the context of the mentioned geometry. We show that Gauss-Bonnet gravity admits an analytical solution provided that the constants of the theory are properl…
We examine the problem of overcharging extremal and near-extremal black hole solutions of Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity in any dimension, generalizing the result in general relativity. We show that as in the case of general relativity, it is not possible to create a naked singularity by overcharging an extremal black hole in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity using a charged test particle. Our result suggests that the validity of the cosmic censorship hypothesis transcends beyond general relativity to well motivated higher curvature gravity.
The Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati (DGP) braneworld model is employed to study the gravitational collapse of dust, with a Gauss-Bonnet (GB) term present in the five-dimensional bulk. We find that, within the normal (nonself-accelerating) DGP branch and due to the curvature effects from the GB component on the brane, the black hole singularity acquires modified features. More precisely, during collapse and for a finite comoving time, before a singularity would emerge at the zero physical radius, the first time derivative of the Hubble rate diverges, whereas the brane energy density and the Hubble rate…
We obtain a black hole solution in the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory for the string cloud model in a five dimensional spacetime. We analyze the event horizons and naked singularities. Later, we compute the Hawking temperature $T_{\mathrm{H}}$, the specific heat $C$, the entropy $S$, and the Helmholtz free energy $F$ of the black hole. The entropy was computed using the Wald formulation. In addition, the quantum correction to the Wald's entropy is considered for the string cloud source. We mainly explore the thermodynamical global and local stability of the system with vanishing or non-vanishing…
The Zipoy-Voorhees family of static, axisymmetric vacuum solutions forms an interesting family in that it contains the Schwarzschild black hole excepting which all other members have naked singularity. We analyze some properties of the region near singularity by studying a natural family of 2-surfaces. We establish that these have the topology of the 2-sphere by an application of the Gauss-Bonnet theorem. By computing the area, we establish that the singular region is `point-like'. Isometric embedding of these surfaces in the three dimensional Euclidean space is used to distinguish the two typ…
In this work we examine the small mass limit of black holes, with and without spin, in theories where a scalar field is non-minimally coupled to a Gauss-Bonnet term. First, we provide an analytical example for a theory where a static closed-form solution with a small mass limit is known, and later use analytical and numerical techniques to explore this limit in standard scalar-Gauss-Bonnet theories with dilatonic, linear and quadratic-exponential couplings. In most cases studied here, we find an inner singularity that overlaps with the event horizon of the static black hole as the small mass l…
We discuss black holes in an effective theory derived from a superstring model, which includes a dilaton field, a gauge field and the Gauss-Bonnet term. Assuming U(1) or SU(2) symmetry for the gauge field, we find four types of spherically symmetric solutions, i.e., a neutral, an electrically charged, a magnetically charged and a ``colored'' black hole, and discuss their thermodynamical properties and fate via the Hawking evaporation process. For neutral and electrically charged black holes, we find critical point and a singular end point. Below the mass corresponding to the critical point, no…

We consider the O(a') string effective action, with Gauss-Bonnet curvature-squared and fourth-order dilaton-derivative terms, which is derived by a matching procedure with string amplitudes in five space-time dimensions. We show that a non-factorizable metric of the Randall-Sundrum (RS) type, with four-dimensional conformal factor Exp(-2 k|z|), can be a solution of the pertinent equations of motion. The parameter k is found proportional to the string coupling g_s and thus the solution appears to be non-perturbative. It is crucial that the Gauss-Bonnet combination has the right (positive in our…
Lovelock theory is a natural extension of Einstein theory of gravity to higher dimensions, and it is of great interest in theoretical physics as it describes a wide class of models. In particular, it describes string theory inspired ultraviolet corrections to Einstein-Hilbert action, while admits the Einstein general relativiy and the so called Chern-Simons theories of gravity as particular cases. Recently, five-dimensional Lovelock theory has been considered in the literature as a working example to illustrate the effects of including higher-curvature terms in the context of AdS/CFT correspon…
