It is known that, if all the real-valued irreducible characters of a finite group have odd degree, then the group has normal Sylow $2$-subgroup. We generalize this result for Sylow $p$-subgroups, for any prime number $p$, while assuming the group to be $p$-solvable. In particular, it is proved that a $p$-solvable group has a normal Sylow $p$-subgroup if $p$ does not divide the degree of any irreducible character of the group fixed by a field automorphism of order $p$.
We define fully irreducible automorphisms of generalized Baumslag-Solitar groups in analogy with fully irreducible automorphisms of free groups. We first obtain a characterization of fully irreducible automorphisms analogous to a condition given by Kapovich. Next we discuss the existence of pseudo-periodic conjugacy classes based on the study of Nielsen paths in a train track representative. Finally we give an algorithm which finds out whether an automorphism with a train track representative is pseudo-atoroidal and fully irreducible.
For any right-angled Artin group, we show that its outer automorphism group contains either a finite-index nilpotent subgroup or a nonabelian free subgroup. This is a weak Tits alternative theorem. We find a criterion on the defining graph that determines which case holds. We also consider some examples of solvable subgroups, including one that is not virtually nilpotent and is embedded in a non-obvious way.
We study the minimally displaced set of irreducible automorphisms of a free group. Our main result is the co-compactness of the minimally displaced set of an irreducible automorphism with exponential growth $ϕ$, under the action of the centraliser $C(ϕ)$. As a corollary, we get that the same holds for the action of $<ϕ>$ on $Min(ϕ)$. Finally, we prove that the minimally displaced set of an irreducible automorphism of growth rate one is consisted of a single point.
We introduce a new class of automorphisms $φ$ of the non-abelian free group $F_N$ of finite rank $N \geq 2$ which contains all iwips (= fully irreducible automorphisms), but also any automorphism induced by a pseudo-Anosov homeomorphism of a surface with arbitrary many boundary components. More generally, there may be subgroups of $F_N$ of rank $\geq 2$ on which $φ$ restricts to the identity. We prove some basic facts about such {\em tree-irreducible} automorphisms, and show that, together with Dehn twist automorphisms, they are the natural basic building blocks from which any automorphism of …
Similarly to the action of $Out(F_N)$ on Outer Space, the outer automorphism group of a Generalized Baumslag Solitar group acts on a deformation space endowed with the Lipschitz metric and the action of any fully irreducible automorphism with a train track representative is hyperbolic. Inspired by previous work by Algom-Kfir, we prove that the axis of such an automorphism is strongly contracting.
We prove that the minimally displaced set of a relatively irreducible automorphism of a free splitting, situated in a deformation space, is uniformly locally finite. The minimally displaced set coincides with the train track points for an irreducible automorphism. We develop the theory in a general setting of deformation spaces of free products, having in mind the study of the action of reducible automorphisms of a free group on the simplicial bordification of Outer Space. For instance, a reducible automorphism will have invariant free factors, act on the corresponding stratum of the bordifica…
Let $G$ be a finite solvable group, given through a refined consistent polycyclic presentation, and $α$ an automorphism of $G$, given through its images of the generators of $G$. In this paper, we discuss algorithms for computing the order of $α$ as well as the cycle length of a given element of $G$ under $α$. We give correctness proofs and discuss the theoretical complexity of these algorithms. Along the way, we carry out detailed complexity analyses of several classical algorithms on finite polycyclic groups.
The main theorem of this document emulates, in the context of Out(F_r) theory, a mapping class group theorem (by H. Masur and J. Smillie) that determines precisely which index lists arise from pseudo-Anosov mapping classes. Since the ideal Whitehead graph gives a finer invariant in the analogous setting of a fully irreducible outer automorphism, we instead focus on determining which of the 21 connected, loop-free, 5-vertex graphs are ideal Whitehead graphs of ageometric, fully irreducible outer automorphisms of the free group of rank 3. Our main theorem accomplishes this by showing that there …
By a theorem of Thurston, in the subgroup of the mapping class group generated by Dehn twists around two curves that fill, every element not conjugate to a power of one of the twist is pseudo-Anosov. We prove an analogue of this theorem for the outer automorphism group of a free group.
Let $G=(V,E)$ be a graph with the vertex-set $V$ and the edge-set $E$. Let $N(v)$ denote the set of neighbors of the vertex $v$ of $G.$ The graph $G$ is called $ irreducible $ whenever for every $v,w \in V$ if $v \neq w$, then $N(v)\neq N(w).$ In this paper, we present a method for finding automorphism groups of connected bipartite irreducible graphs. Then, by our method, we determine automorphism groups of some classes of connected bipartite irreducible graphs, including a class of graphs which are derived from Grassmann graphs. Let $a_0$ be a fixed positive integer. We show that if $G$ is a …
The weights for a finite group G with respect to a prime number p where introduced by Jon Alperin, in order to formulate his celebrated conjecture. In 1992, Everett Dade formulates a refinement of Alperin's conjecture involving ordinary irreducible characters - with their defect - and, in 2000, Geoffrey Robinson proves that the new conjecture holds for p-solvable groups. But this refinement is formulated in terms of a vanishing alternating sum, without giving any possible refinement for the weights. In this note we show that, in the case of the p-solvable finite groups, the method developed in…
We show that the conjugacy problem is solvable in [finitely generated free]-by-cyclic groups, by using a result of O. Maslakova that one can algorithmically find generating sets for the fixed subgroups of free group automorphisms, and one of P. Brinkmann that one can determine whether two cyclic words in a free group are mapped to each other by some power of a given automorphism. The algorithm effectively computes a conjugating element, if it exists. We also solve the power conjugacy problem and give an algorithm to recognize if two given elements of a finitely generated free group are Reideme…
For every free product decomposition $G = G_{1} \ast ...\ast G_{q} \ast F_{r}$, where $F_r$ is a finitely generated free group, of a group $G$ of finite Kurosh rank, we can associate some (relative) outer space $\mathcal{O}$. In this paper, we develop the theory of (stable) laminations for (relative) irreducible with irreducible powers (IWIP) automorphisms. In particular, we examine the action of $Out(G, \mathcal{O}) \leq Out(G)$ (i.e. the automorphisms which preserve the set of conjugacy classes of $G_i$'s) on the set of laminations. We generalise the theory of the attractive laminations asso…
Let $G$ be a finite group, and assume that $G$ has an automorphism of order at least $ρ|G|$, with $ρ\in\left(0,1\right)$. Generalizing recent analogous results of the author on finite groups with a large automorphism cycle length, we prove that if $ρ>1/2$, then $G$ is abelian, and if $ρ>1/10$, then $G$ is solvable, whereas in general, the assumption implies $[G:\operatorname{Rad}(G)]\leqρ^{-1.78}$, where $\operatorname{Rad}(G)$ denotes the solvable radical of $G$. Furthermore, we generalize an example of Horoševski\uı to show that in finite groups, the quotient of the maximum automorphism orde…
The self-similar structure of the attracting subshift of a primitive substitution is carried over to the limit set of the repelling tree in the boundary of Outer Space of the corresponding irreducible outer automorphism of a free group. Thus, this repelling tree is self-similar (in the sense of graph directed constructions). Its Hausdorff dimension is computed. This reveals the fractal nature of the attracting tree in the boundary of Outer Space of an irreducible outer automorphism of a free group.
We show that a finite group $G$ admitting an automorphism $α$ such that the function $G\rightarrow G$, $g\mapsto gα(g)$, is bijective is necessarily solvable.
For every atoroidal iwip automorphism $ϕ$ of $F_N$ (i.e. the analogue of a pseudo-Anosov mapping class) it is shown that the algebraic lamination dual to the forward limit tree $T_+(ϕ)$ is obtained as "diagonal closure" of the support of the backward limit current $μ_-(ϕ)$. This diagonal closure is obtained through a finite procedure in analogy to adding diagonal leaves from the complementary components to the stable lamination of a pseudo-Anosov homeomorphism. We also give several new characterizations as well as a structure theorem for the dual lamination of $T_+(ϕ)$, in terms of Bestvina-Fe…
There are various results in the literature which are part of the general philosophy that a finite group for which a certain parameter (for example, the number of conjugacy classes or the maximum number of elements inverted, squared or cubed by a single automorphism) is large enough must be close to being abelian. In this paper, we show the following: Fix a real number $ρ$ with $0<ρ\leq 1$. Then a finite group $G$ with an automorphism inverting or squaring at least $ρ|G|$ of the elements in $G$ is "almost abelian" in the sense that both the index and the derived length of the solvable radical …
Let N be a normal subgroup of a finite group G and consider the set cd(G|N) of degrees of irreducible characters of G whose kernels do not contain N. A number of theorems are proved relating the set cd(G|N) to the structure of N. For example, if N is solvable, its derived length is bounded above by a function of |cd(G|N)|. Also, if |cd(G|N)| is at most 2, then N is solvable and its derived length is at most |cd(G|N)|. If G is solvable and |cd(G|N)| = 3, then the derived length of N is at most 3.
This paper shows that the automorphism group of a Beauville surface is a finite solvable group, and describes its possible structure. It relies on results of Singerman on triangle group inclusions, and of Lucchini on generators for special linear groups.
By using a notion of a geometric Dehn twist in $\sharp_k(S^2 \times S^1)$, we prove that when projections of two $\mathbb{Z}$-splittings to the free factor complex are far enough from each other in the free factor complex, Dehn twist automorphisms corresponding to the $\mathbb{Z}$-splittings generate a free group of rank $2$. Moreover, every element from this free group is either conjugate to a power of one of the Dehn twists or it is a fully irreducible outer automorphism of the free group. We also prove that, when projected to the intersection graph, the same group of Dehn twists produce ato…
We let $φ$ be an ageometric fully irreducible outer automorphism so that its Handel-Mosher axis bundle consists of a single unique axis. We show that the centralizer $Cen(\langleφ\rangle)$ of the cyclic subgroup generated by $φ$ equals the stabilizer $\text{Stab}(Λ^+_φ)$ of the attracting lamination $Λ^+_φ$ and is isomorphic to $\mathbb Z$. We further show, via an analogous result about the commensurator, that the normalizer $N(\langleφ\rangle)$ of $\langle φ\rangle$ is isomorphic to either $\mathbb Z$ or $\mathbb Z_2 * \mathbb Z_2$.
We study the solvable groups $G$ that have an irreducible character $χ\in \Irr(G)$ such that $χ\barχ$ has at most two non-principal irreducible constituents.
We study subgroups and quotients of outer automorphism groups of right-angled Artin groups (RAAGs). We prove that for all RAAGS, the outer automorphism group is residually finite and, for a large class of RAAGs, it satisfies the Tits alternative. We also investigate which of these automorphism groups contain non-abelian solvable subgroups.
We say a group $G$ has property $R_\infty$ if the number $R(φ)$ of twisted conjugacy classes is infinite for every automorphism $φ$ of $G$. For such groups, the $R_\infty$-nilpotency degree is the least integer $c$ such that $G/γ_{c+1}(G)$ has property $R_\infty$. In this work, we compute the $R_\infty$-nilpotency degree of all Generalized Solvable Baumslag-Solitar groups $Γ_n$. Moreover, we compute the lower central series of $Γ_n$, write the nilpotent quotients $Γ_{n,c}=Γ_n/γ_{c+1}(Γ_n)$ as semidirect products of finitely generated abelian groups and classify which integer invertible matrice…
In this paper we show that if S is a simple classical group, a group G is contained in inner-diagonal automorphisms of S and contains S, and H is a solvable Hall subgroup of G, then there exists five conjugates of H, whose intersection is trivial.
When $G$ is solvable group, we prove that the number of conjugacy classes of elements of prime power order is less than or equal to the number of irreducible characters with values in fields where $\mathbb {Q}$ is extended by prime power roots of unity. We then combine this result with a theorem of Héthelyi and Külshammer that bounds the order of a finite group in terms of the number of conjugacy classes of elements of prime power order to bound the order of a solvable group by the number of irreducible characters with values in fields extended by prime power roots of unity. This yields for so…
We prove an orbifold conjecture for a solvable automorphism group. Namely, we show that if V is a C_2-cofinite simple vertex operator algebra and G is a finite solvable automorphism group of V, then the fixed point vertex operator subalgebra V^G is also C_2-cofinite. This offers a mathematically rigorous background to orbifold theories of finite type with solvable automorphism groups.
Let $X$ be a compact Riemann surface of genus $g\geq 2$. Let $Aut(X)$ be its group of automorphisms and $G\subseteq Aut(X)$ a subgroup. Sharp upper bounds for $|G|$ in terms of $g$ are known if $G$ belongs to certain classes of groups, e.g. solvable, supersolvable, nilpotent, metabelian, metacyclic, abelian, cyclic. We refine these results by finding similar bounds for groups of odd order that are of these types. We also add more types of solvable groups to that long list by establishing the optimal bounds for, among others, groups of order $p^m q^n$. Moreover, we show that Zomorrodian's bound…
A concrete family of automorphisms alpha_n of the free group F_n is exhibited, for any n > 2, and the following properties are proved: alpha_n is irreducible with irreducible powers, has trivial fixed subgroup, and has 2n-1 attractive as well as 2n repelling fixed points at bdry F_n. As a consequence of a recent result of V Guirardel there can not be more fixed points on bdry F_n, so that this family provides the answer to a question posed by G Levitt.
(Free-abelian)-by-free, self-similar groups generated by finite self-similar sets of tree automorphisms and having unsolvable conjugacy problem are constructed. Along the way, orbit undecidable, free subgroups of GL_d(Z), for d > 5, and Aut(F_d), for d > 4, are constructed as well.
Let $p\ge 3$ be a prime. A generalised multi-edge spinal group is a subgroup of the automorphism group of a regular $p$-adic rooted tree T that is generated by one rooted automorphism and $p$ families of directed automorphisms, each family sharing a common directed path disjoint from the paths of the other families. This notion generalises the concepts of multi-edge spinal groups, including the widely studied GGS-groups, and the extended Gupta-Sidki groups that were introduced by Pervova. Extending techniques that were developed in these more special cases, we prove: generalised multi-edge spi…
We prove that the base size of a transitive group $G$ with solvable point stabilizer and with trivial solvable radical is not greater than $k$ provided the same statement holds for the group of $G$-induced automorphisms of each nonabelian composition factor of $G$.
We study those fully irreducible outer automorphisms phi of a finite rank free group F_r which are ``parageometric'', meaning that the attracting fixed point of phi in the boundary of outer space is a geometric R-tree with respect to the action of F_r, but phi itself is not a geometric outer automorphism in that it is not represented by a homemorphism of a surface. Our main result shows that the expansion factor of phi is strictly larger than the expansion factor of the inverse of phi. As corollaries (proved independently by Guirardel), the inverse of a parageometric outer automorphism is neit…
We complete the description of automorphism groups of all nonsplit extensions of elementary abelian $2$-groups by $PSL_2(q)$, with $q$ odd, for an irreducible induced action. An application of this result to the theory of $π$-submaximal subgroups is given.
We prove the following: For any $ρ\in\left(0,1\right)$, if a finite group $G$ has an automorphism with a cycle of length at least $ρ\cdot|G|$, then the index of the solvable radical $\operatorname{Rad}(G)$ in $G$ is bounded from above in terms of $ρ$, and such a condition is strong enough to imply solvability of $G$ if and only if $ρ>\frac{1}{10}$. Furthermore, considering, for exponents $e\in\left(0,1\right)$, the condition that a finite group $G$ have an automorphism with a cycle of length at least $|G|^e$, such a condition is strong enough to imply $|\operatorname{Rad}(G)|\to\infty$ for $|G…
We classify the nonsplit extensions of elementary abelian $p$-groups by $PSL_2(q)$, with odd $p$ dividing $q-1$, for an irreducible induced action, calculate the relevant low-dimensional cohomology groups, and describe the automorphism groups of such extensions.

Let $FH$ be a Frobenius group with kernel $F$ and complement $H$, acting coprimely on the finite solvable group $G$ by automorphisms. We prove that if $C_{G}(H)$ is of Fitting length $n$ then the index of the $n$-th Fitting subgroup $F_{n}(G)$ in $G$ is bounded in terms of $|C_{G}(F)|$ and $|F|.$ This generalizes a result of Khukhro and Makarenko \cite{k-m} which handles the case $n=1.$
We prove that if a solvable group A acts coprimely on a solvable group G, then A has a "large" orbit in its corresponding action on the set of ordinary complex irreducible characters of G. This extends (at the cost of a weaker bound) a 2005 result of A. Moreto who obtained such a bound in case that A is a p-group.
The automorphism group of the vertex operator algebra $V_L^+$ is studied by using its action on isomorphism classes of irreducible $V_L^+$-modules. In particular, the shape of the automorphism group of $V_L^+$ is determined when $L$ is isomorphic to an even unimodular lattice without roots, $\sqrt2R$ for an irreducible root lattice $R$ of type $ADE$ and the Barnes-Wall lattice of rank 16.
In \cite{Ka14} we produced an algorithm for deciding whether or not an element $ϕ\in Out(F_N)$ is an iwip ("fully irreducible") automorphism. At several points that algorithm was rather inefficient as it involved some general enumeration procedures as well as running several abstract processes in parallel. In this paper we refine the algorithm from \cite{Ka14} by eliminating these inefficient features, and also by eliminating any use of mapping class groups algorithms. Our main result is to produce, for any fixed $N\ge 3$, an algorithm which, given a topological representative $f$ of an elemen…
We prove that $d(G) \log |G| = O(n^2 \log q)$ for irreducible subgroups $G$ of GL$(n,q)$, and estimate the associated constants. The result is motivated by attempts to bound the complexity of computing the automorphism groups of various classes of finite groups.
