We consider the random evolution described by the motion of a particle moving on a circle alternating the angular velocities $ \pm c $ and changing rotation at Poisson random times, resulting in a telegraph process over the circle. We study the analytic properties of the semigroup it generates as well as its probability distribution. The asymptotic behavior of the wrapped process is also studied in terms of circular Brownian motion. Besides, it is possible to derive a stochastic model for harmonic oscillators with random changes in direction and we give a diffusive approximation of this process. Furthermore, we introduce some extensions of the circular telegraph model in the asymmetric case and for non-Markovian waiting times as well. In this last case, we also provide some asymptotic considerations.
We study a family of memory-based persistent random walks and we prove weak convergences after space-time rescaling. The limit processes are not only Brownian motions with drift. We have obtained a continuous but non-Markov process $(Z_t)$ which can be easely expressed in terms of a counting process $(N_t)$. In a particular case the counting process is a Poisson process, and $(Z_t)$ permits to represent the solution of the telegraph equation. We study in detail the Markov process $((Z_t,N_t); t\ge 0)$.
We propose a new generalisation of jump-telegraph process with variable velocities and jumps. Amplitude of the jumps and velocity values are random, and they depend on the time spent by the process in the previous state of the underlying Markov process. This construction is applied to markets modelling. The distribution densities and the moments satisfy some integral equations of the Volterra type. We use them for characterisation of the equivalent risk-neutral measure and for the expression of historical volatility in various settings. The fundamental equation is derived by similar arguments.…
A telegraph process with an elastic barrier at the origin was studied in [5]; in particular the number of visits of the origin before the absorption is a geometric distributed random variable M. Some asymptotic results (large and moderate deviations) for that model were obtained in [17]. In this paper we study large and moderate deviations for a generalized model where M is a light-tailed distributed random variable.
We consider a random trial-based telegraph process, which describes a motion on the real line with two constant velocities along opposite directions. At each epoch of the underlying counting process the new velocity is determined by the outcome of a random trial. Two schemes are taken into account: Bernoulli trials and classical Pólya urn trials. We investigate the probability law of the process and the mean of the velocity of the moving particle. We finally discuss two cases of interest: (i) the case of Bernoulli trials and intertimes having exponential distributions with linear rates (in whi…
We study a one-dimensional Markov modulated random walk with jumps. It is assumed that amplitudes of jumps as well as a chosen velocity regime are random and depend on a time spent by the process at a previous state of the underlying Markov process. Equations for the distribution and equations for its moments are derived. We characterise the martingale distributions in terms of observable proportions between jump and velocity regimes.
We investigate the one-dimensional telegraph random process in the presence of an elastic boundary at the origin. This process describes a finite-velocity random motion that alternates between two possible directions of motion (positive or negative). When the particle hits the origin, it is either absorbed, with probability $α$, or reflected upwards, with probability $1-α$. In the case of exponentially distributed random times between consecutive changes of direction, we obtain the distribution of the renewal cycles and of the absorption time at the origin. This investigation is performed both…
It has been alleged in several papers that the so called delayed continuous-time random walks (DCTRWs) provide a model for the one-dimensional telegraph equation at microscopic level. This conclusion, being widespread now, is strange, since the telegraph equation describes phenomena with finite propagation speed, while the velocity of the motion of particles in the DCTRWs is infinite. In this paper we investigate how accurate are the approximations to the DCTRWs provided by the telegraph equation. We show that the diffusion equation, being the correct limit of the DCTRWs, gives better approxim…
In this paper we study the joint distributions of the telegraph process and its maximum conditioned on the number of changes of direction and the initial velocity. We prove that in the case of positive starting velocity, a form of the reflection principle holds. We call it the negative reflection principle and we generalize it to the paths of the random motions moving with constant finite velocity. In the last section we obtain the conditional distribution of the first passage time of the telegraph process by using the known results on the maximum of the motion. Finally, we derive the distribu…
Most of the published articles on random motions have been devoted to the study of the telegraph process or its generalizations that describe the random motion in $R^n$ of a single particle in a Markov or semi-Markov medium. However, up to our best knowledge there are no published papers dealing with the interaction of two or more particles which move according to the telegraph processes. In this paper, we construct the system of telegraph processes with interactions, which can be interpreted as a model of ideal gas. In this model, we investigate the free path times of a family of particles be…
In this work we construct compositions of processes of the form \bm{S}_n^{2β}(c^2 \mathpzc{L}^ν(t) \r, t>0, ν\in (0, 1/2], β\in (0,1], n \in \mathbb{N}, whose distribution is related to space-time fractional n-dimensional telegraph equations. We present within a unifying framework the pde connections of n-dimensional isotropic stable processes \bm{S}_n^{2β} whose random time is represented by the inverse \mathpzc{L}^ν(t), t>0, of the superposition of independent positively-skewed stable processes, \mathpzc{H}^ν(t) = H_1^{2ν} (t) + (2λ\r^{\frac{1}ν} H_2^ν(t), t>0, (H_1^{2ν}, H_2^ν, independent …
Consider $n$ independent Goldstein-Kac telegraph processes $X_1(t), \dots ,X_n(t), \; n\ge 2, \; t\ge 0,$ on the real line $\Bbb R$. Each the process $X_k(t), \; k=1,\dots,n,$ describes a stochastic motion at constant finite speed $c_k>0$ of a particle that, at the initial time instant $t=0$, starts from some initial point $x_k^0=X_k(0)\in\Bbb R$ and whose evolution is controlled by a homogeneous Poisson process $N_k(t)$ of rate $λ_k>0$. The governing Poisson processes $N_k(t), \; k=1,\dots,n,$ are supposed to be independent as well. Consider the linear form of the processes $X_1(t), \dots ,X_…
In a recent work we introduced a semi-Markovian discrete-time generalization of the telegraph process. We referred this random walk to as squirrel random walk (SRW). The SRW is a discrete-time random walk on the one-dimensional infinite lattice where the step direction is reversed at arrival times of a discrete-time renewal process and remains unchanged at uneventful time instants. We first recall general notions of the SRW. The main subject of the paper is the study of the SRW where the step direction switches at the arrival times of a generalization of the Sibuya discrete-time renewal proces…
A stochastic telegraph equation is defined by adding a random inhomogeneity to the classical (second order linear hyperbolic) telegraph differential equation. The inhomogeneities we consider are proportional to the two-dimensional white noise, and solutions to our equation are two-dimensional random Gaussian fields. We show that such fields arise naturally as asymptotic fluctuations of the height function in a certain limit regime of the stochastic six vertex model in a quadrant. The corresponding law of large numbers -- the limit shape of the height function -- is described by the (determinis…
We consider a telegraph process with elastic boundary at the origin studied recently in the literature. It is a particular random motion with finite velocity which starts at $x\geq 0$, and its dynamics is determined by upward and downward switching rates $λ$ and $μ$, with $λ>μ$, and an absorption probability (at the origin) $α\in(0,1]$. Our aim is to study the asymptotic behavior of the absorption time at the origin with respect to two different scalings: $x\to\infty$ in the first case; $μ\to\infty$, with $λ=βμ$ for some $β>1$ and $x>0$, in the second case. We prove several large and moderate …
We analyze the one-dimensional telegraph random process confined by two boundaries, 0 and $H>0$. The process experiences hard reflection at the boundaries (with random switching to full absorption). Namely, when the process hits the origin (the threshold $H$) it is either absorbed, with probability $α$, or reflected upwards (downwards), with probability $1-α$, for $0<α<1$. We provide various results on the expected values of the renewal cycles and of the absorption time. The adopted approach is based on the analysis of the first-crossing times of a suitable compound Poisson process through lin…
The telegraph process models a random motion with finite velocity and it is usually proposed as an alternative to diffusion models. The process describes the position of a particle moving on the real line, alternatively with constant velocity $+ v$ or $-v$. The changes of direction are governed by an homogeneous Poisson process with rate $λ>0.$ In this paper, we consider a change point estimation problem for the rate of the underlying Poisson process by means of least squares method. The consistency and the rate of convergence for the change point estimator are obtained and its asymptotic dist…
Motivated by applications in mathematical biology concerning randomly alternating motion of micro-organisms, we analyze a generalized integrated telegraph process. The random times between consecutive velocity reversals are gamma-distributed, and perform an alternating renewal process. We obtain the probability law and the mean of the process.
In this paper we show that given a circle packing of an infinite planar triangulation such that its carrier is parabolic, placing weights on the edges according to a certain natural way introduced by Dubejko, makes the random walk recurrent. We also propose a higher-dimensional analogue of the Dubejko weights.
We show that the circle packing type of a unimodular random plane triangulation is parabolic if and only if the expected degree of the root is six, if and only if the triangulation is amenable in the sense of Aldous and Lyons. As a part of this, we obtain an alternative proof of the Benjamini-Schramm Recurrence Theorem. Secondly, in the hyperbolic case, we prove that the random walk almost surely converges to a point in the unit circle, that the law of this limiting point has full support and no atoms, and that the unit circle is a realisation of the Poisson boundary. Finally, we show that the…
In this paper we study the asymptotic behavior of the maximum magnitude of a complex random polynomial with i.i.d. uniformly distributed random roots on the unit circle. More specifically, let $\{n_k\}_{k=1}^{\infty}$ be an infinite sequence of positive integers and let $\{z_{k}\}_{k=1}^{\infty}$ be a sequence of i.i.d. uniform distributed random variables on the unit circle. The above pair of sequences determine a sequence of random polynomials $P_{N}(z) = \prod_{k=1}^{N}{(z-z_k)^{n_k}}$ with random roots on the unit circle and their corresponding multiplicities. In this work, we show that su…
Motivated by the problem of computing the distribution of the largest distance $d_{\max}$ between $n$ random points on a circle we derive an explicit formula for the moments of the maximal component of a random vector following a Dirichlet distribution with concentration parameters $(1,\ldots,1)$. We use this result to give a new proof of the fact that the law of $n\,d_{\max}-\log n$ converges to a Gumbel distribution as $n$ tends to infinity.
This paper presents finite-velocity random motions driven by fractional Klein-Gordon equations of order $α\in (0,1]$. A key tool in the analysis is played by the McBride's theory which converts fractional hyper-Bessel operators into Erdelyi-Kober integral operators. Special attention is payed to the fractional telegraph process whose space-dependent distribution solves a non-homogeneous fractional Klein-Gordon equation. The distribution of the fractional telegraph process for $α= 1$ coincides with that of the classical telegraph process and its driving equation converts into the homogeneous Kl…
Among several things, we find the side density for random triangles circumscribing the unit circle and calculate that its median is 5.5482.... An analogous exact computation for perimeter density remains open.
We consider a class of discrete-time random walks with directed unit steps on the integer line. The direction of the steps is reversed at the time instants of events in a discrete-time renewal process and is maintained at uneventful time instants. This model represents a discrete-time semi-Markovian generalization of the telegraph process. We derive exact formulae for the propagator using generating functions. We prove that for geometrically distributed waiting times in the diffusive limit, this walk converges to the classical telegraph process. We consider the large-time asymptotics of the ex…
We study random independent and identically distributed iterations of functions from an iterated function system of homeomorphisms on the circle which is minimal. We show how such systems can be analyzed in terms of iterated function systems with probabilities which are non-expansive on average.
In this paper we deduce a universal result about the asymptotic distribution of roots of random polynomials, which can be seen as a complement to an old and famous result of Erdos and Turan. More precisely, given a sequence of random polynomials, we show that, under some very general conditions, the roots tend to cluster near the unit circle, and their angles are uniformly distributed. The method we use is deterministic: in particular, we do not assume independence or equidistribution of the coefficients of the polynomial.
In this paper we study random walks on the hypergroup of circles in a finite field of prime order p = 4l + 3. We investigating the behavior of random walks on this hypergroup, the equilibrium distribution and the mixing times. We use two different approaches - comparision of Dirichlet forms (geometric bound of eigenvalues), and coupling methods, to show that the mixing time of random walks on hypergroup of circles is only linear.
Given a dense countable set in a metric space, the infinite random geometric graph is the random graph with the given vertex set and where any two points at distance less than 1 are connected, independently, with some fixed probability. It has been observed by Bonato and Janssen that in some, but not all, such settings, the resulting graph does not depend on the random choices, in the sense that it is almost surely isomorphic to a fixed graph. While this notion makes sense in the general context of metric spaces, previous work has been restricted to sets in Banach spaces. We study the case whe…
The link between Gaussian random fields and Markov random fields is well established based on a stochastic partial differential equation in Euclidean spaces, where the Matérn covariance functions are essential. However, the Matérn covariance functions are not always positive definite on circles and spheres. In this manuscript, we focus on the extension of this link to circles, and show that the link between Gaussian random fields and Markov random fields on circles is valid based on the circular Matérn covariance function instead. First, we show that this circular Matérn function is the covari…
In this paper, we study the Dvoretzky covering problem with non-uniformly distributed centers. When the probability law of the centers admits an absolutely continuous density which satisfies a regular condition on the set of essential infimum points, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for covering the circle. When the lengths of covering intervals are of the form $\ell_n = \frac{c}{n}$, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for covering the circle, without imposing any regularity on the density function.
The arctic circle theorem of Jockusch, Propp, and Shor asserts that uniformly random domino tilings of an Aztec diamond of high order are frozen with asymptotically high probability outside the "arctic circle" inscribed within the diamond. A similar arctic circle phenomenon has been observed in the limiting behavior of random square Young tableaux. In this paper, we show that random domino tilings of the Aztec diamond are asymptotically related to random square Young tableaux in a more refined sense that looks also at the behavior inside the arctic circle. This is done by giving a new derivati…
Let $f = \sum_{k=0}^n \varepsilon_k z^k$ be a random polynomial, where $\varepsilon_0,\ldots ,\varepsilon_n$ are iid standard Gaussian random variables, and let $ζ_1,\ldots,ζ_n$ denote the roots of $f$. We show that the point process determined by the magnitude of the roots $\{ 1-|ζ_1|,\ldots, 1-|ζ_n| \}$ tends to a Poisson point process at the scale $n^{-2}$ as $n\rightarrow \infty$. One consequence of this result is that it determines the magnitude of the closest root to the unit circle. In particular, we show that \[ \min_{k} ||ζ_k| - 1|n^2 \rightarrow \mathrm{Exp}(1/6),\] in distribution, …
Let $f_n(z) = \sum_{k = 0}^n \varepsilon_k z^k$ be a random polynomial where $\varepsilon_0,\ldots,\varepsilon_n$ are i.i.d. random variables with $\mathbb{E} \varepsilon_1 = 0$ and $\mathbb{E} \varepsilon_1^2 = 1$. Letting $r_1, r_2,\ldots, r_k$ denote the real roots of $f_n$, we show that the point process defined by $\{|r_1| - 1,\ldots, |r_k| - 1 \}$ converges to a non-Poissonian limit on the scale of $n^{-1}$ as $n \to \infty$. Further, we show that for each $δ> 0$, $f_n$ has a real root within $Θ_δ(1/n)$ of the unit circle with probability at least $1 - δ$. This resolves a conjecture of S…
In this note we study the error term R_{n,L}(x) in the generalized circle problem for a ball of volume x and a random lattice L of large dimension n. Our main result is the following functional central limit theorem: Fix an arbitrary function f(n) from the positive integers to the positive real line, tending to infinity with n but with subexponential growth. Then, the random function t -> (2f(n))^{-1/2} R_{n,L}(t f(n)) on the interval [0,1] converges in distribution to one-dimensional Brownian motion as n tends to infinity. The proof goes via convergence of moments, and for the computations we…
