Covariant models of loop quantum gravity generically imply dynamical signature change at high density. This article presents detailed derivations that show the fruitful interplay of this new kind of signature change with wave-function proposals of quantum cosmology, such as the no-boundary and tunneling proposals. In particular, instabilities of inhomogeneous perturbations found in a Lorentzian path-integral treatment are naturally cured. Importantly, dynamical signature change does not require Planckian densities when off-shell instantons are relevant.
We describe a scheme for the exploration of quantum gravity phenomenology focussing on effects that could be thought as arising from a fundamental granularity of space-time. In contrast with the simplest assumptions, such granularity is assumed to respect Lorentz Invariance but is otherwise left unspecified. The proposal is fully observer covariant, it involves non-trivial couplings of curvature to matter fields and leads to a well defined phenomenology. We present the effective Hamiltonian which could be used to analyze concrete experimental situations, some of which are briefly described, an…
It is known that the no-boundary proposal in the traditional Einstein gravity does not prefer inflation, that is, the probability of realizing a large number of e-folds is exponentially suppressed. This situation may be changed drastically in a class of nonlinear massive gravity theories recently proposed by deRham, Gabadadze and Tolley, called dRGT massive gravity. We show that the contribution from the massive gravity sector can enhance the probability of a large number of e-folds substantially for a sufficiently large mass parameter mg comparable to the Hubble parameter during inflation, sa…
Explicit tests are presented of the conjectured entropic origin of the gravitational force. The gravitational force on a test particle in the vicinity of the horizon of a large Schwarzschild black hole in arbitrary spacetime dimensions is obtained as entropic force. The same conclusion can be reached for the cases of a large electrically charged black hole and a large slowly rotating Kerr black hole. The generalization along the same lines to a test mass in the field of an arbitrary spherical star is also studied and found not to be possible. Our results thus reinforce the argument that the en…
Two very similar proposals have been made recently for witnessing nonclassical features of gravity, by Bose et al. and by Marletto and Vedral. However, while these proposals are asserted to be very general, they are in fact based on a very strong claim: that quantum systems cannot become entangled via a classical intermediary. We point out that the support provided for this claim is only applicable to a very limited class of quantum-classical interaction models, corresponding to Koopman-type dynamics. We show that the claim is also valid for mean-field models, but that it is contradicted by ex…
In this paper we extend some previous results for a new proposal for gravity and place them into overall context. The basic fields of this proposal provide an off-shell realization of symmetry with respect to SO(3,C) gauge transformations and general coordinate transformations of 4-dimensional spacetime.
Models of loop quantum gravity based on real connections have a deformed notion of general covariance, which leads to the phenomenon of signature change. This result is confirmed here in a general analysis of all midisuperspace models without local degrees of freedom. As a subclass of models, 2-dimensional theories of dilaton gravity appear, but a larger set of examples is possible based only on the condition of anomaly freedom. While the classical dilaton gravity models are the only such systems without deformed covariance, they do give rise to signature change when holonomy modifications are…
We propose a model for the quantum theory of gravity. the model has diffeomorphism invariance, a natural length scale, and (plausibly) propagating modes. in the new addendum, we alter the model in a way which makes the propagating modes much easier to approach.
We propose new version of massive $F(R)$ gravity which is natural generalization of convenient massive ghost-free gravity. Its Hamiltonian formulation in scalar-tensor frame is developed. We show that such $F(R)$ theory is ghost-free. The cosmological evolution of such theory is investigated. Despite the strong Bianchi identity constraint the possibility of cosmic acceleration (especially, in the presence of cold dark matter) is established. Ghost-free massive $F(R,T)$ gravity is also proposed.
The class of covariant gravity theories which have nice ultraviolet behavior and seem to be (super)-renormalizable is proposed. The apparent breaking of Lorentz invariance occurs due to the coupling with the effective fluid which is induced by Lagrange multiplier constrained scalar field. Spatially-flat FRW cosmology for such covariant field gravity may have accelerating solutions. Renormalizable versions of more complicated modified gravity which depends on Riemann and Ricci tensor squared may be constructed in the same way.
Model of Riemann-Cartan gravity with varying signature of metric is considered. The basic dynamical variables of the formalism are vierbein, spin connection, and an internal metric in the tangent space. The corresponding action contains new terms, which depend on these fields. In general case the signature of the metric is determined dynamically. The Minkowski signature is preferred dynamically because the configurations with the other signatures are dynamically suppressed. We also discuss briefly the motion of particles in the background of the modified black hole configuration, in which insi…
Signature change has been identified as a generic consequence of holonomy modifications in spherically symmetric models of loop quantum gravity with real connections, which includes modified Schwarzschild solutions. Here, this result is extended to 2-dimensional dilaton models and to different choices of canonical variables, including in particular the Callan-Giddings-Harvey-Strominger (CGHS) solution. New obstructions are found to coupling matter and to including operator-ordering effects in an anomaly-free manner.
Various approaches to quantum gravity such as string theory, loop quantum gravity and Horava-Lifshitz gravity predict modifications of the energy-momentum dispersion relation. Magueijo and Smolin incorporated the modified dispersion relation (MDR) with the general theory of relativity to yield a theory of gravity's rainbow. In this paper, we investigate the Schwarzschild metric in the context of gravity's rainbow. We investigate rainbow functions from three known modified dispersion relations that were introduced by Amelino-Camelia, et el. in [arXiv:hep-th/9605211, arXiv:0806.0339v2, arXiv:ast…
In the first paper of this series, we have introduced the concept of an atom of space-time-matter [STM], which is described by the spectral action of non-commutative geometry, corresponding to a classical theory of gravity. In the present work, we use the Connes time parameter along with the spectral action, to incorporate gravity into trace dynamics. We then derive the spectral equation of motion for the STM atom, which turns out to be the Dirac equation on a non-commutative space.
Holographic entanglement entropy provides a direct connection between classical geometry and quantum entanglement; however the usual prescription does not apply to theories of higher spin gravity, where standard notions of geometry are no longer gauge invariant. We present a proposal for the holographic computation of entanglement entropy in field theories dual to higher spin theories of gravity in AdS3. These theories have a Chern-Simons description, and our proposal involves a Wilson line in an infinite-dimensional representation of the bulk gauge group. In the case of spin-2 gravity such Wi…
We examine holographic complexity in the doubly holographic model introduced in [arXiv:2006.04851][arXiv:2010.00018] to study quantum extremal islands. We focus on the holographic complexity=volume (CV) proposal for boundary subregions in the island phase. Exploiting the Fefferman-Graham expansion of the metric and other geometric quantities near the brane, we derive the leading contributions to the complexity and interpret these in terms of the generalized volume of the island derived from the induced higher-curvature gravity action on the brane. Motivated by these results, we propose a gener…
It is still a challenging problem to the theoretical physicists to know the exact nature of the galactic dark matter which causes the galactic rotational velocity to be more or less a constant. We have proposed that the dark matter as an effect of f(T) gravity. Assuming the flat rotation curves as input we have shown that f(T) gravity can explain galactic dynamics. Here, we don' have to introduce dark matter. Spacetime metric inspired by f(T) gravity describes the region up to which the tangential velocity of the test particle is constant. This inherent property appears to be enough to produce…
General Relativity is a hugely successful description of gravitation. However, both theory and observations suggest that General Relativity might have significant classical and quantum corrections in the Strong Gravity regime. Testing the strong field limit of gravity is one of the main objectives of the future gravitational wave detectors. One way to detect strong gravity is through the polarization of gravitational waves. For quasi-normal modes of black-holes in General Relativity, the two polarisation states of gravitational waves have the same amplitude and frequency spectrum. Using the pr…
The black hole final state proposal implements manifest unitarity in the process of black hole formation and evaporation in quantum gravity, by postulating a unique final state boundary condition at the singularity. We argue that this proposal can be embedded in the gauge/gravity context by invoking a path integral formalism inspired by the Schwinger-Keldysh like thermo-field double construction in the dual field theory. This allows us to realize the gravitational quantum channels for information retrieval to specific deformations of the field theory path integrals and opens up new connections…
We present a new, falsifiable, quantum theory of gravity, which we name Non-commutative Matter-Gravity. The commutative limit of the theory is classical general relativity. In the first two papers of this series, we have introduced the concept of an atom of space-time-matter [STM], which is described by the spectral action in non-commutative geometry, corresponding to a classical theory of gravity. We used the Connes time parameter, along with the spectral action, to incorporate gravity into trace dynamics. We then derived the spectral equation of motion for the gravity part of the STM atom, w…
In this thesis, we study the implications of Quantum Gravity models for the dynamics of spacetime and the ensuing departures from classical General Relativity. The main focus is on cosmological applications, particularly the impact of quantum gravitational effects on the dynamics of a homogenous and isotropic cosmological background. Our interest lies in the consequences for the evolution of the early universe and singularity resolution, as well as in the possibility of providing an alternative explanation for dark matter and dark energy in the late universe. The thesis is divided into two mai…
We study quantum gravity signatures emerging from phenomenologically motivated multiscale models, spectral actions, and Causal Set Theory within the detector approach to the Unruh effect. We show that while the Unruh temperature is unaffected, Lorentz-invariant corrections to the two-point function leave a characteristic fingerprint in the induced emission rate of the accelerated detector. Generically, quantum gravity models exhibiting dynamical dimensional reduction exhibit a suppression of the Unruh rate at high energy while the rate is enhanced in Kaluza-Klein theories with compact extra di…
Signature change at high density has been obtained as a possible consequence of deformed space-time structures in models of loop quantum gravity. This article provides a conceptual discussion of implications for cosmological scenarios, based on an application of mathematical results for mixed-type partial differential equations (the Tricomi problem). While the effective equations from which signature change has been derived are shown to be locally regular and therefore reliable, the underlying theory of loop quantum gravity may face several global problems in its semiclassical solutions.
In this paper we perform a full gauge-fixing of the phase space of four dimensional General Relativity (GR) of Lorentzian signature for the time symmetric case, using the CDJ variables. In particular, the Gauss' law constraint in the chosen gauge meets the conditions of the Cauchy-Kovalevskaya theorem for first order, quasilinear PDEs. This implies the existence of a unique analytic solution to the initial value constraints problem in some region of 3-space, featuring four free functions per spacetime point. This result constitutes a step toward addressal of the reduced phase space problem of …
A proposal that the bosonic action of gravity and the standard model is induced from the fermionic action is investigated. It is suggested that this might occur naturally in state sum models.
In recent years, a growing momentum has been gained by the emergent gravity framework. Within the latter, the very concepts of geometry and gravitational interaction are not seen as elementary aspects of Nature but rather as collective phenomena associated to the dynamics of more fundamental objects. In this paper we want to further explore this possibility by proposing a model of emergent Lorentzian signature and scalar gravity. Assuming that the dynamics of the fundamental objects can give rise in first place to a Riemannian manifold and a set of scalar fields we show how time (in the sense …
We propose a new method for determining total masses of low frequency eccentric binaries (such as, neutron star binaries with orbital frequency $f\gsim 10^{-3}$Hz) from their gravitational waves. In this method we use the frequency shift caused by periastron advance, and it works even at low frequency band where chirp signal due to radiation reaction is difficult to be measured. It is shown that the total masses of several Galactic neutron star binaries might be measured accurately (within a few percent error) by LISA with operation period of $\sim 10$ years.
We elaborate on our proposal regarding a connection between global physics and local galactic dynamics via quantum gravity. This proposal calls for the concept of MONDian dark matter which behaves like cold dark matter at cluster and cosmological scales but emulates modified Newtonian dynamics (MOND) at the galactic scale. In the present paper, we first point out a surprising connection between the MONDian dark matter and an effective gravitational Born-Infeld theory. We then argue that these unconventional quanta of MONDian dark matter must obey infinite statistics, and the theory must be fun…
We analyze the classical limit of kinematic loop quantum gravity in which the diffeomorphism and hamiltonian constraints are ignored. We show that there are no quantum states in which the primary variables of the loop approach, namely the SU(2) holonomies along {\em all} possible loops, approximate their classical counterparts. At most a countable number of loops must be specified. To preserve spatial covariance, we choose this set of loops to be based on physical lattices specified by the quasi-classical states themselves. We construct ``macroscopic'' operators based on such lattices and prop…
Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet gravity has recently been known to exhibit spontaneous scalarization. In the presence of the Gauss-Bonnet term the no-hair theorem can be evaded and novel black hole solutions with non-trivial scalar fields have been found besides the general relativistic solutions. In this paper, we aim to investigate the possibility of observationally testing Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet gravity using thin accretion disk properties around such scalarized black holes. Using the Novikov-Thorne model, we numerically calculate the electromagnetic flux, temperature distribution, emiss…
We consider quantization of the Baierlein-Sharp-Wheeler form of the gravitational action, in which the lapse function is determined from the Hamiltonian constraint. This action has a square root form, analogous to the actions of the relativistic particle and Nambu string. We argue that path-integral quantization of the gravitational action should be based on a path integrand $\exp[ \sqrt{i} S ]$ rather than the familiar Feynman expression $\exp[ i S ]$, and that unitarity requires integration over manifolds of both Euclidean and Lorentzian signature. We discuss the relation of this path integr…
We develop a formalism to calculate the response of a model gravitational wave detector to a quantized gravitational field. Coupling a detector to a quantum field induces stochastic fluctuations ("noise") in the length of the detector arm. The statistical properties of this noise depend on the choice of quantum state of the gravitational field. We characterize the noise for vacuum, coherent, thermal, and squeezed states. For coherent states, corresponding to classical gravitational configurations, we find that the effect of gravitational field quantization is small. However, the standard devia…
There has been a proposal that infrared quantum effects of massless interacting field theories in de-Sitter space may provide time-dependent screening of the cosmological constant. As a concrete model of the proposal, we study the three loop corrections to the energy-momentum tensor of massless $λϕ^4$ theory in the background of classical Liouville gravity in $D=2$ dimensional de-Sitter space. We find that the cosmological constant is screened in sharp contrast to the massless $λϕ^4$ theory in $D=4$ dimensions due to the sign difference between the cosmological constant of the Liouville gravit…
In this note we reply to the criticism by Corichi concerning our proposal for an equidistant area spectrum in loop quantum gravity. We further comment on the emission properties of black holes and on the statistics of links.
We show that a recent proposal for the quantization of gravity based on discrete space-time implies a modification of standard quantum mechanics that naturally leads to a loss of coherence in quantum states of the type discussed by Milburn. The proposal overcomes the energy conservation problem of previously proposed decoherence mechanisms stemming from quantum gravity. Mesoscopic quantum systems (as Bose--Einstein condensates) appear as the most promising testing grounds for an experimental verification of the mechanism.
We introduce the group field theory (GFT) formalism for non-perturbative quantum gravity, and present it as a potential unifying framework for several other quantum gravity approaches, i.e. loop quantum gravity and simplicial quantum gravity ones. We then argue in favor of and present in detail what we believe is a new GFT perspective on the emergence of continuum spacetime from discrete quantum structures, based on the idea of quantum space as a condensed matter system. We put forward a more specific, albeit still very much tentative, proposal for the relevant phase of the GFT corresponding t…
A growing number of studies is being devoted to the identification of plausible quantum properties of spacetime which might give rise to observably large effects. The literature on this subject is now relatively large, including studies in string theory, loop quantum gravity and noncommutative geometry. It is useful to divide the various proposals into proposals involving a systematic quantum-gravity effect (an effect that would shift the main/average prediction for a given observable quantity) and proposals involving a non-systematic quantum-gravity effect (an effect that would introduce new …
We introduce a new spinorial, BF-like action for the Einstein gravity. This is a first, up to our knowledge, 2-form action which describes the real, Lorentzian gravity and uses only the self-dual connection. In the generic case, the corresponding classical canonical theory is equivalent to the Einstein-Ashtekar theory plus the reality conditions.
We show that gravitational-wave astronomy has the potential to inform us on quantum aspects of black holes. Based on Bekenstein's quantization, we find that black hole area discretization could impart observable imprints to the gravitational-wave signal from a pair of merging black holes, affecting their absorption properties during inspiral and their late-time relaxation after merger. In contrast with previous results, we find that black hole rotation, ubiquitous in astrophysics, improves our ability to probe quantum effects. Our analysis shows that gravitational-wave echoes and suppressed ti…
We consider a wide class of two-dimensional metrics having one Killing vector. The method is proposed for the construction of maximally extended surfaces with the given Riemannian metric which is the analog of the conformal block method for two-dimensional Lorentzian signature metrics. The Schwarzschild solution is considered as an example.
I review several different calculations, coming from string theory, nonperturbative quantum gravity and analyses of black holes that lead to predictions of phenomena that would uniquely be signatures of quantum gravitational effects. These include: 1) deviations from a thermal spectra for evaporating black holes, 2) upper limits on the entropy and energy content of bounded regions, 3) suppression of ultra-high energy scattering amplitudes, consistent with a modified uncertainty principle, 4) physical volumes and areas have discrete spectra, 5), violations of $CPT$ and universal violations of $…
The recent Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) observations of the M87* have led to a surge of interest in studying the shadow of black holes. Besides, investigation of time evolution and lifetime of black holes helps us to veto/restrict some theoretical models in gravitating systems. Motivated by such exciting properties, we study optical features of black holes, such as the shadow geometrical shape and the energy emission rate in modified gravity. We consider a charged AdS black hole in dRGT massive gravity and look for criteria to restrict the free parameters of the theory. The main goal of this …
In this paper, I investigate the possible quantization, in the context of LQG, of three dimensional gravity in the case of positive cosmological constant Λ and try to make contact with alternative quantization approaches already existing in the literature. Due to the appearance of an anomaly in the constraints algebra, previously studied as a first step of the analysis, alternative techniques developed for the quantization of systems with constraints algebras not associated with a structure Lie group need to be adopted. Therefore, I introduce an ansatz for a physical state which gives some tra…
Over the last few years the study of possible Planck-scale departures from classical Lorentz symmetry has been one of the most active areas of quantum-gravity research. We now have a satisfactory description of the fate of Lorentz symmetry in the most popular noncommutative spacetimes and several studies have been devoted to the fate of Lorentz symmetry in loop quantum gravity. Remarkably there are planned experiments with enough sensitivity to reveal these quantum-spacetime effects, if their magnitude is only linearly suppressed by the Planck length. Unfortunately, in some quantum-gravity sce…
Using the action for the instanton representation of Plebanski gravity (IRPG), we construct minisuperspace solutions restricted to diagonal variables. We have treated the Euclidean signature case with zero cosmological constant, depicting a gravitational analogy to free particle motion. This paper provides a testing ground for the IRPG for a simple case, which will be extended to the full theory in future work.
Our proposal here is to set up the conceptual framework for an eventual {Theory of Everything}. We formulate the arena -language- to build up {\it any} QG. In particular, we show how the objects of fundamental theories, such as p-branes (strings, loops and others) could be posed in this language.
A recent proposal for quantizing gravity is investigated for self consistency. There are well-known difficulties in dealing with Einstein gravity when resorting to the perturbative techniques of quantum field theory. This however does not preclude the existence of a quantum form. This Letter is all about such a subtle but important difference.
The "problem of time" in canonical quantum gravity refers to the difficulties involved in defining a Hilbert space structure on states -- and local observables on this Hilbert space -- for a theory in which the spacetime metric is treated as a quantum field, so no classical metrical or causal structure is present on spacetime. We describe an approach -- much in the spirit of ideas proposed by Misner, Kuchar and others -- to defining states and local observables in quantum gravity which exploits the analogy between the Hamiltonian formulation of general relativity and that of a relativistic par…
We propose the holographic principle as a dynamical cutoff for any quantum theory of gravity with a geometric description at low energies, incorporating ideas of effective field theory. We illustrate the proposal by revisiting the problem of defining a measure for homogeneous and isotropic spacetimes coupled to a scalar field and conclude by discussing the implications to the inflationary model.
We present an introduction to the canonical quantization of gravity performed in loop quantum gravity, based on lectures held at the 3rd quantum geometry and quantum gravity school in Zakopane in 2011. A special feature of this introduction is the inclusion of new proposals for coupling matter to gravity that can be used to deparametrize the theory, thus making its dynamics more tractable. The classical and quantum aspects of these new proposals are explained alongside the standard quantization of vacuum general relativity in loop quantum gravity.
We point out that recent Verlinde's proposal of emergent gravity suffers from some internal inconsistencies. The main idea in this proposal is to preserve general relativity at short scales where numerous tests verified its validity, but modify it on large scales where we meet puzzles raised by observations (in particular dark matter), by using some entropic concepts. We first point out that gravity as a conservative force is very difficult (if possible at all) to portray as an entropic force. We then show that the derivation of the MOND relation using the elastic strain idea is not self-consi…
The use of proper ``time'' to describe classical ``spacetimes'' which contain both Euclidean and Lorentzian regions permits the introduction of smooth (generalized) orthonormal frames. This remarkable fact permits one to describe both a variational treatment of Einstein's equations and distribution theory using straightforward generalizations of the standard treatments for constant signature.
We solve a general equation describing the lowest order corrections arising from quantum gravitational effects to the spectrum of cosmological fluctuations. The spectra of scalar and tensor perturbations are calculated to first order in the slow roll approximation and the results are compared with the most recent observations. The slow roll approximation gives qualitatively new quantum gravitational effects with respect to the pure de Sitter case.
