In this paper we perform a full gauge-fixing of the phase space of four dimensional General Relativity (GR) of Lorentzian signature for the time symmetric case, using the CDJ variables. In particular, the Gauss' law constraint in the chosen gauge meets the conditions of the Cauchy-Kovalevskaya theorem for first order, quasilinear PDEs. This implies the existence of a unique analytic solution to the initial value constraints problem in some region of 3-space, featuring four free functions per spacetime point. This result constitutes a step toward addressal of the reduced phase space problem of GR.
We examine the advantages of the SO(3)-ADM (Ashtekar) formulation of general relativity, from the point of following the dynamics of the Lorentzian spacetime in direction of applying this into numerical relativity. We describe our strategy how to treat new constraints and reality conditions, together with a proposal of new variables. We show an example of passing a degenerate point in flat spacetime numerically by posing `reality recovering' conditions on spacetime. We also discuss some available advantages in numerical relativity.
In the context of canonical quantum gravity, we study an alternative real quantisation scheme, which is arising by relating simpler Riemannian quantum theory to the more complicated physical Lorentzian theory - the generalised Wick transform. On the symmetry reduced models, homogenous Bianchi cosmology and 2+1 gravity, we investigate its generalised construction principle, demonstrate that the emerging quantum theory is equivalent to the one obtained from standard quantisation and how to obtain physical states in Lorentzian gravity from Wick transforming solutions of Riemannian quantum theory.
Covariant models of loop quantum gravity generically imply dynamical signature change at high density. This article presents detailed derivations that show the fruitful interplay of this new kind of signature change with wave-function proposals of quantum cosmology, such as the no-boundary and tunneling proposals. In particular, instabilities of inhomogeneous perturbations found in a Lorentzian path-integral treatment are naturally cured. Importantly, dynamical signature change does not require Planckian densities when off-shell instantons are relevant.
D = 2+1 gravity with a cosmological constant has been shown by Bonzom and Livine to present a Barbero-Immirzi like ambiguity depending on a parameter. We make use of this fact to show that, for positive cosmological constant, the Lorentzian theory can be partially gauge fixed and reduced to an SU(2) Chern-Simons theory. We then review the already known quantization of the latter in the framework of Loop Quantization for the case of space being topogically a cylinder. We finally construct, in the same setting, a quantum observable which, although non-trivial at the quantum level, corresponds to…
We construct a positive complexifier, differentiable almost everywhere on the classical phase space of real triads and $SU(2)$ connections, which generates a Wick Transform from Euclidean to Lorentzian gravity everywhere except on a phase space set of measure zero. This Wick transform assigns an equal role to the self dual and anti-self dual Ashtekar variables in quantum theory. We argue that the appropriate quantum arena for an analysis of the properties of the Wick rotation is the diffeomorphism invariant Hilbert space of Loop Quantum Gravity (LQG) rather than its kinematic Hilbert space. We…
The Hartle-Hawking state is a proposal for a preferred initial state for quantum gravity, based on a path integral over all compact Euclidean four-geometries which have a given three-geometry as a boundary. The wave function constructed this way satisfies the (Lorentzian) Hamiltonian constraint of general relativity in ADM variables in a formal sense. In this article we mimic this procedure of constructing an initial state in terms of Ashtekar-Barbero variables, and observe that the wave function thus constructed does not satisfy the Lorentzian Hamiltonian constraint even in a formal sense. We…
Recently there has been a surge of interest in studying Lorentzian quantum cosmology using Picard-Lefschetz methods. The present paper aims to explore the Lorentzian path-integral of Gauss-Bonnet gravity in four spacetime dimensions with metric as the field variable. We employ mini-superspace approximation and study the variational problem exploring different boundary conditions. It is seen that for mixed boundary conditions non-trivial effects arise from Gauss-Bonnet sector of gravity leading to additional saddle points for lapse in some case. As an application of this we consider the No-boun…
We reconsider the matrix model formulation of type IIB superstring theory in (9+1)-dimensional space-time. Unlike the previous proposal in which the Wick rotation was used to make the model well-defined, we regularize the Lorentzian model by introducing infrared cutoffs in both the spatial and temporal directions. Monte Carlo studies reveal that the two cutoffs can be removed in the large-N limit and that the theory thus obtained has no parameters other than one scale parameter. Moreover, we find that three out of nine spatial directions start to expand at some "critical time", after which the…
In recent work, we introduced Picard-Lefschetz theory as a tool for defining the Lorentzian path integral for quantum gravity in a systematic semiclassical expansion. This formulation avoids several pitfalls occurring in the Euclidean approach. Our method provides, in particular, a more precise formulation of the Hartle-Hawking no boundary proposal, as a sum over real Lorentzian four-geometries interpolating between an initial three-geometry of zero size, {\it i.e}, a point, and a final three-geometry. With this definition, we calculated the no boundary amplitude for a closed universe with a c…
We formulate a dynamically triangulated model of three-dimensional Lorentzian quantum gravity whose spatial sections are flat two-tori. It is shown that the combinatorics involved in evaluating the one-step propagator (the transfer matrix) is that of a set of vicious walkers on a two-dimensional lattice with periodic boundary conditions and that the entropy of the model scales exponentially with the volume. We also give explicit expressions for the Teichmüller parameters of the spatial slices in terms of the discrete parameters of the 3d triangulations, and reexpress the discretized action in …
The gravitational path-integral of Gauss-Bonnet gravity is investigated and the transition from one spacelike boundary configuration to another is analyzed. Of particular interest is the case of Neumann and Robin boundary conditions which is known to lead to a stable Universe in Einstein-Hilbert gravity in four spacetime dimensions. After setting up the variational problem and computing the necessary boundary terms, the transition amplitude is computed \emph{exactly} in the mini-superspace approximation. The $\hbar\to0$ limit brings out the dominant pieces in the path-integral which is traced …
In previous works, we have demonstrated that the path integral for {\it real, Lorentzian} four-geometries in Einstein gravity yields sensible results in well-understood physical situations, but leads to uncontrolled fluctuations when the "no boundary" condition proposed by Hartle and Hawking is imposed. In order to circumvent our result, new definitions for the gravitational path integral have been sought, involving specific choices for a class of {\it complex} four-geometries to be included. In their latest proposal, Diaz Dorronsoro {\it et al.}~\cite{DiazDorronsoro:2018wro} advocate integrat…

We study the reduced phase space quantization of a closed Friedmann Universe, where matter content is constituted by two (no-interacting) fluids, namely dust (or cold dark matter) and radiation. It is shown that, for this particular model, specific boundary conditions can be related to the algebra of Dirac observables.
We show that the Lorentzian Snyder models, together with their Galilei and Carroll limiting cases, can be rigorously constructed through the projective geometry description of Lorentzian, Galilean and Carrollian spaces with nonvanishing constant curvature. The projective coordinates of such curved spaces take the role of momenta, while translation generators over the same spaces are identified with noncommutative spacetime coordinates. In this way, one obtains a deformed phase space algebra, which fully characterizes the Snyder model and is invariant under boosts and rotations of the relevant …
The family of Gowdy universes with the spatial topology of a three-torus is studied both classically and quantum mechanically. Starting with the Ashtekar formulation of Lorentzian general relativity, we introduce a gauge fixing procedure to remove almost all of the non-physical degrees of freedom. In this way, we arrive at a reduced model that is subject only to one homogeneous constraint. The phase space of this model is described by means of a canonical set of elementary variables. These are two real, homogeneous variables and the Fourier coefficients for four real fields that are periodic i…
The quantum cosmological version of the multidimensional Einstein-Yang-Mills model in a $R \times S^3 \times S^d$ topology is studied in the framework of the Hartle-Hawking proposal. In contrast to previous work in the literature, we consider Yang-Mills field configurations with non-vanishing time-dependent components in both $S^3$ and $S^d$ spaces. We obtain stable compactifying solutions that do correspond to extrema of the Hartle-Hawking wave function of the Universe. Subsequently, we also show that the regions where 4-dimensional metric behaves classically or quantum mechanically (i.e. reg…
$[n+1]$-dimensional ($n\geq 3$) smooth Einsteinian spaces of Euclidean and Lorentzian signature are considered. The base manifold $M$ is supposed to be smoothly foliated by a two-parameter family of codimension-two-surfaces which are orientable and compact without boundary in $M$. By applying a pair of nested $1+n$ and $1+[n-1]$ decompositions, the canonical form of the metric and the conformal structure of the foliating codimension-two-surfaces a gauge fixing, analogous to the one applied in arXiv:1409.4914, is introduced. In verifying that the true degrees of freedom of gravity may convenien…
Building on a recent proposal for a quantum reduction to spherical symmetry from full loop quantum gravity, we investigate the relation between a quantisation of spherically symmetric general relativity and a reduction at the quantum level. To this end, we generalise the previously proposed quantum reduction by dropping the gauge fixing condition on the radial diffeomorphisms, thus allowing to make direct contact between previous work on reduced quantisation. A dictionary between spherically symmetric variables and observables with respect to the reduction constraints in the full theory is dis…
We analyse the boundary structure of General Relativity in the coframe formalism in the case of a lightlike boundary, i.e., when the restriction of the induced Lorentzian metric to the boundary is degenerate. We describe the associated reduced phase space in terms of constraints on the symplectic space of boundary fields. We explicitly compute the Poisson brackets of the constraints and identify the first- and second-class ones. In particular, in the 3+1 dimensional case, we show that the reduced phase space has two local degrees of freedom, instead of the usual four in the non-degenerate case…
Causal fermion systems are introduced as a general mathematical framework for formulating relativistic quantum theory. By specializing, we recover earlier notions like fermion systems in discrete space-time, the fermionic projector and causal variational principles. We review how an effect of spontaneous structure formation gives rise to a topology and a causal structure in space-time. Moreover, we outline how to construct a spin connection and curvature, leading to a proposal for a "quantum geometry" in the Lorentzian setting. We review recent numerical and analytical results on the support o…

We introduce hp-greedy, a refinement approach for building gravitational wave surrogates as an extension of the standard reduced basis framework. Our proposal is data-driven, with a domain decomposition of the parameter space, local reduced basis, and a binary tree as the resulting structure, which are obtained in an automated way. When compared to the standard global reduced basis approach, the numerical simulations of our proposal show three salient features: i) representations of lower dimension with no loss of accuracy, ii) a significantly higher accuracy for a fixed maximum dimensionality…
We study the role of the Barbero-Immirzi parameter $γ$ and the choice of connection in the construction of (a symmetry-reduced version of) loop quantum gravity. We start with the four-dimensional Lorentzian Holst action that we reduce to three dimensions in a way that preserves the presence of $γ$. In the time gauge, the phase space of the resulting three-dimensional theory mimics exactly that of the four-dimensional one. Its quantization can be performed, and on the kinematical Hilbert space spanned by SU(2) spin network states the spectra of geometric operators are discrete and $γ$-dependent…
