Let $Ω$ be a bounded convex domain in $\mathbb{C}^{n}$. We show that if $φ\in C^{1}(\overlineΩ)$ is holomorphic along analytic varieties in $bΩ$, then $H^{q}_φ$, the Hankel operator with symbol $φ$, is compact. We have shown the converse earlier, so that we obtain a characterization of compactness of these operators in terms of the behavior of the symbol relative to analytic structure in the boundary. A corollary is that Toeplitz operators with these symbols are Fredholm (of index zero).
We establish a connection between compactness of Hankel operators and geometry of the underlying domain through compactness multipliers for the $\overline{\partial}$-Neumann operator. In particular, we prove that any compactness multiplier induces a compact Hankel operator. We also generalize the notion of compactness multipliers to vector fields and matrices and then we use this generalization to generate compact Hankel operators.
Let $Ω$ be a bounded convex Reinhardt domain in $\mathbb{C}^2$ and $ϕ\in C(\barΩ)$. We show that the Hankel operator $H_ϕ$ is compact if and only if $ϕ$ is holomorphic along every non-trivial analytic disc in the boundary of $Ω$.
Using several complex variables techniques, we investigate the interplay between the geometry of the boundary and compactness of Hankel operators. Let f be a function smooth up to the boundary on a smooth bounded pseudoconvex domain D in C^n. We show that, if D is convex or the Levi form of the boundary of D is of rank at least n-2, then compactness of the Hankel operator H_f implies that f is holomorphic "along" analytic discs in the boundary. Furthermore, when D is convex in C^2 we show that the condition on f is necessary and sufficient for compactness of H_f
We prove the following localization for compactness of Hankel operators on Bergman spaces. Assume that D is a bounded pseudoconvex domain in C^n, p is a boundary point of D and B(p,r) is a ball centered at p with radius r so that U=D\cap B(p,r) is connected. We show that if the Hankel operator H^D_f is compact on A^2(D) (the symbols f is C^1 on the closure of D) then H^U_f is compact on A^2(U) where A^2(D) and A^2(U) denote the Bergman spaces on D and U, respectively.
Let D be a piecewise smooth bounded convex Reinhardt domain in C^2. Assume that the symbols f and g are continuous on the closure of D and harmonic on the disks in the boundary of D. We show that if the product of Hankel operators H^*_f H_g is compact on the Bergman space of D, then on any disk in the boundary of D, either f or g is holomorphic.
Let $Ω$ be a bounded pseudoconvex domain in $\mathbb{C}^2$ with Lipschitz boundary or a bounded convex domain in $\mathbb{C}^n$ and $ϕ\in C(\overlineΩ)$ such that $H_ϕ$ is compact on $A^2(Ω)$. Then $ϕ\circ f$ is holomorphic for any holomorphic $f:\mathbb{D}\rightarrow bΩ$.
Let $\D=\D_1\setminus \Dc_2$, where $\D_1$ and $\D_2$ are two smooth bounded pseudoconvex domains in $\C^n, n\geq 3,$ such that $\Dc_2\subset \D_1.$ Assume that the $\dbar$-Neumann operator of $\D_1$ is compact and the interior of the Levi-flat points in the boundary of $\D_2$ is not empty (in the relative topology). Then we show that the Hankel operator on $\D$ with symbol $ϕ, H^{\D}_ϕ,$ is compact for every $ϕ\in C(\Dc)$ but the $\dbar$-Neumann operator on $\D$ is not compact.
Let $Ω$ be a bounded convex domain in $\mathbb{C}^{n}$, $n\geq 2$, $1\leq q\leq (n-1)$, and $ϕ\in C(\barΩ)$. If the Hankel operator $H^{q-1}_ϕ$ on $(0,q-1)$--forms with symbol $ϕ$ is compact, then $ϕ$ is holomorphic along $q$--dimensional analytic (actually, affine) varieties in the boundary. We also prove a partial converse: if the boundary contains only `finitely many' varieties, $1\leq q\leq n$, and $ϕ\in C(\barΩ)$ is analytic along the ones of dimension $q$ (or higher), then $H^{q-1}_ϕ$ is compact.
In this paper we characterize compact Hankel operators with conjugate holomorphic symbols on the Bergman space of bounded convex Reinhardt domains in $\mathbb{C}^2$. We also characterize compactness of Hankel operators with conjugate holomorphic symbols on smooth bounded pseudoconvex complete Reinhardt domains in $\mathbb{C}^2$.
We prove that on smooth bounded pseudoconvex Hartogs domains in $\mathbb{C}^2$ compactness of the $\bar{\partial}$-Neumann operator is equivalent to compactness of all Hankel operators with symbols smooth on the closure of the domain.
Let $\mathbb{D}^n$ be the polydisk in $\mathbb{C}^n$ and the symbols $ϕ,ψ\in C(\bar{\mathbb{D}^n})$ such that $ϕ$ and $ψ$ are pluriharmonic on any $(n-1)$-dimensional polydisk in the boundary of $\mathbb{D}^{n}.$ Then $H^*_ψH_ϕ$ is compact on $A^2(\mathbb{D}^n)$ if and only if for every $1\leq j,k\leq n$ such that $j\neq k$ and any $(n-1)$-dimensional polydisk $D$, orthogonal to the $z_j$-axis in the boundary of $\mathbb{D}^n,$ either $ϕ$ or $ψ$ is holomorphic in $z_k$ on $D.$ Furthermore, we prove a different sufficient condition for compactnes of the products of Hankel operators. In $\mathbb…
We prove the spectral mapping theorem $σ_e(A_ϕ) = ϕ(σ_e(A_z))$ for the Fredholm spectrum of a truncated Toeplitz operator $A_ϕ$ with symbol $ϕ$ in the Sarason algebra $C+H^\infty$ acting on a coinvariant subspace $K_θ$ of the Hardy space $H^2$. Our second result says that a truncated Hankel operator on the subspace $K_θ$ generated by a one-component inner function $θ$ is compact if and only if it has a continuous symbol. We also suppose a description of truncated Toeplitz and Hankel operators in Schatten classes $S^p$.
Let $Ω\subset \mathbb{C}^2$ be a bounded pseudoconvex complete Reinhardt domain with a smooth boundary. We study the behavior of analytic structure in the boundary of $Ω$ and obtain a compactness result for Hankel operators on the Bergman space of $Ω$.
We study big Hankel operators acting on vector-valued Fock spaces with radial weights in $\C^d$. We provide complete characterizations for the boundedness, compactness and Schatten class membership of such operators.
In this paper, we study the boundedness and the compactness of the little Hankel operators $h_b$ with operator-valued symbols $b$ between different weighted vector-valued Bergman spaces on the open unit ball $\mathbb{B}_n$ in $\mathbb{C}^n.$ More precisely, given two complex Banach spaces $X,Y,$ and $0 < p,q \leq 1,$ we characterize those operator-valued symbols $b: \mathbb{B}_{n}\rightarrow \mathcal{L}(\overline{X},Y)$ for which the little Hankel operator $h_{b}: A^p_α(\mathbb{B}_{n},X) \longrightarrow A^q_α(\mathbb{B}_{n},Y),$ is a bounded operator. Also, given two reflexive complex Banach s…
Let $1\leq q\leq (n-1)$. We first show that a necessary condition for a Hankel operator on $(0,q-1)$-forms on a convex domain to be compact is that its symbol is holomorphic along $q$-dimensional analytic varieties in the boundary. Because maximal estimates (equivalently, a comparable eigenvalues condition on the Levi form of the boundary) turn out to be favorable for compactness of Hankel operators, this result then implies that on a convex domain, maximal estimates exclude analytic varieties from the boundary, except ones of top dimension $(n-1)$ (and their subvarieties). Some of our techniq…
We characterize the boundedness of Hankel bilinear forms on a product of generalized Fock-Sobolev spaces on ${\mathbb C}^n$ with respect to the weight $(1+|z|)^ρe^{-\fracα2|z|^{2\ell}}$, for $\ell\ge 1$, $α>0$ and $ρ\in{\mathbb R}$. We obtain a weak decomposition of the Bergman kernel with estimates and a Littlewood-Paley formula, which are key ingredients in the proof of our main results. As an application, we characterize the boundedness, compactness and the membership in the Schatten class of small Hankel operators on these spaces.
We consider Fock spaces $F^{p,\ell}_α$ of entire functions on ${\mathbb C}$ associated to the weights $e^{-α|z|^{2\ell}}$, where $α>0$ and $\ell$ is a positive integer. We compute explicitly the corresponding Bergman kernel associated to $F^{2,\ell}_α$ and, using an adequate factorization of this kernel, we characterize the boundedness and the compactness of the small Hankel operator $\mathfrak{h}^{\ell}_{b,α}$ on $F^{p,\ell}_α$. Moreover, we also determine when $\mathfrak{h}^{\ell}_{b,α}$ is a Hilbert-Schmidt operator on $F^{2,\ell}_α$.
We show that Property $(P)$ of $\partialΩ$, compactness of the $\bar{\partial}$-Neumann operators $N_1$, and compactness of Hankel operator on a smooth bounded pseudoconvex Hartogs domain $Ω={\{(z, w_1, w_2,\dots, w_n) \in \mathbb{C}^{n+1} \mid\sum_{k=1}^{n} |w_k|^2 < e^{-2φ(z)}, z\in\mathit{D}\}}$ are equivalent, where $D$ is a smooth bounded connected open set in $\mathbb{C}$.
We study the problem of characterizing Hankel-Schur multipliers and Toeplitz-Schur multipliers of Schatten-von Neumann class $\bS_p$ for $0<p<1$. We obtain various sharp necessary conditions and sufficient conditions for a Hankel matrix to be a Schur multiplier of $\bS_p$. We also give a characterization of the Hankel-Schur multipliers of $\bS_p$ whose symbols have lacunary power series. Then the results on Hankel-Schur multipliers are used to obtain a characterization of the Toeplitz-Schur multipliers of $\bS_p$. Finally, we return to Hankel-Schur multipliers and obtain new results in the cas…
In this article, we investigate the (big) Hankel operators $H_f$ on Hardy spaces of strongly pseudoconvex domains with smooth boundaries in $\mathbb{C}^n$. We also give a necessary and sufficient condition for boundedness of the Hankel operator $H_f$ on the Hardy space of the unit disc, which is new in the setting of one variable.
We obtain sufficient conditions for a densely defined operator on the Fock space to be bounded or compact. Under the boundedness condition we then characterize the compactness of the operator in terms of its Berezin transform.
We establish compactness estimates for $\bar{\partial}_{M}$ on a compact pseudoconvex CR-submanifold $M$ of $\mathbb{C}^{n}$ of hypersurface type that satisfies the (analogue of the) geometric sufficient conditions for compactness of the $\bar{\partial}$-Neumann operator given by the authors earlier. These conditions are formulated in terms of certain short time flows in complex tangential directions.
We study compact operators on the Bergman space of the Thullen domain defined by $\{(z_1,z_2)\in \mathbb C^2: |z_1|^{2p}+|z_2|^2<1\}$ with $p>0$ and $p\neq 1$. The domain need not be smooth nor have a transitive automorphism group. We give a sufficient condition for the boundedness of various operators on the Bergman space. Under this boundedness condition, we characterize the compactness of operators on the Bergman space of the Thullen domain.
We realize norms of most composition operators acting on the Hardy space with linear fractional symbol as roots of hypergeometric functions. This realization leads to simple necessary and sufficient conditions on the symbol to exhibit extremal non-compactness, establishes equivalence of cohyponormality and cosubnormality of composition operators with linear fractional symbol, and yields a complete classification of those linear fractional that induce composition operators whose norms are determined by the action of the adjoint on the normalized reproducing kernels in the Hardy space.
This paper provides a complete characterization of quasicontractive groups and analytic $C_0$-semigroups on Hardy and Dirichlet space on the unit disc with a prescribed generator of the form $Af=Gf'$. In the analytic case we also give a complete characterization of immediately compact semigroups. When the analyticity fails, we obtain sufficient conditions for compactness and membership in the trace class. Finally, we analyse the case where the unit disc is replaced by the right-half plane, where the results are drastically different.
For a very general class of weighted Fock spaces on $\mathbb{C}^n$, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for a Toeplitz operator with a (not necessarily positive) measure symbol to be compact. Furthermore, we show that all compact operators are in the norm closure of the algebra generated by Toeplitz operators with $C_c ^\infty(\mathbb{C}^n)$ symbols, and in the Hilbert space setting show that all compact operators are in the norm closure of the set of such Toeplitz operators.
As an application of a new characterization of compactness of the $\bar\partial $-Neumann operator we derive a sufficient condition for compactness of the $\bar\partial $- Neumann operator on $(0,q)$-forms in weighted $L^2$-spaces on $\mathbb{C}^n.$
On a smooth, bounded pseudoconvex domain $Ω$ in $\mathbb{C}^n$, to verify that Catlin's Property ($P$) holds for $bΩ$, it suffices to check that it holds on the set of D'Angelo infinite type boundary points. In this note, we consider the support of the Levi core, $S_{\mathfrak{C}(\mathcal{N})}$, a subset of the infinite type points, and show that Property ($P$) holds for $bΩ$ if and only if it holds for $S_{\mathfrak{C}(\mathcal{N})}$. Consequently, if Property ($P$) holds on $S_{\mathfrak{C}(\mathcal{N})}$, then the $\overline{\partial}$-Neumann operator $N_1$ is compact on $Ω$.
The purpose of this paper is to systematically study compactness and essential norm properties of operators on a very general class of weighted Fock spaces over $\C$. In particular, we obtain rather strong necessary and sufficient conditions for a wide class of operators (which includes operators in the Toeplitz algebra generated by bounded symbols) to be compact and we obtain related estimates on the essential norm of such operators. Finally, we discuss interesting open problems related to our results, and in particular discuss the possibility of extending our results to other generally weigh…
By establishing a unified estimate of the twisted Kohn-Morrey-Hörmander estimate and the $q$-pseudoconvex Ahn-Zampieri estimate, we discuss variants of Property $(P_q)$ of Catlin and Property $(\widetilde{P_q})$ of McNeal on the boundary of a smooth pseudoconvex domain in $\mathbb{C}^n$ for certain high level forms. These variant conditions on the one side, imply $L^2$-compactness of the $\overline{\partial}$-Neumann operator on the associated domain, on the other side, are different from the classical Property $(P_q)$ and Property $(\widetilde{P_q})$. As an application of our result, we show …
In this paper we study the compactness of operators on the Bergman space of the unit ball and on very generally weighted Bargmann-Fock spaces in terms of the behavior of their Berezin transforms and the norms of the operators acting on reproducing kernels. In particular, in the Bergman space setting we show how a vanishing Berezin transform combined with certain (integral) growth conditions on an operator $T$ are sufficient to imply that the operator is compact. In the weighted Bargmann-Fock space setting we show that the reproducing kernel thesis for compactness holds for operators satisfying…
Let $Ω\subset \mathbb{C}^n$ for $n\geq 2$ be a bounded pseudoconvex domain with a $C^2$-smooth boundary. We study the compactness of composition operators on the Bergman spaces of smoothly bounded convex domains. We give a partial characterization of compactness of the composition operator (with sufficient regularity of the symbol) in terms of the behavior of the Jacobian on the boundary. We then construct a counterexample to show the converse of the theorem is false.
For smooth bounded pseudoconvex domains in $mathbb{C}^{2}$, we provide geometric conditions on (the points of infinite type in) the boundary which imply compactness of the $\bar{\partial}$-Neumann operator. It is noteworthy that the proof of compactness does \emph{not} proceed via verifying the known potential theoretic sufficient conditions.
We provide geometric conditions on the set of boundary points of infinite type of a smooth bounded pseudoconvex domain in $\mathbb{C}^{n}$ which imply that the $\bar{\partial}$-Neumann operator is compact. These conditions are formulated in terms of certain short time flows in suitable complex tangential directions. It is noteworthy that compactness is \emph{not} established via the known potential theoretic sufficient conditions. Our results generalize to $\mathbb{C}^{n}$ the corresponding $\mathbb C^{2}$ results due to the second author.
In a celebrated conjecture D.Sarason stated a necessary and sufficient condition on the symbols f, g in the Bergman space, L^2_a(Δ) of the unit disk, Δ, for the products T_{f}T_{\bar g} of associated Toeplitz operators to be bounded (respectively compact) on L^2_a(Δ) . K. Stroethoff and D. Zheng proved that these conditions are necessary. We prove the sufficiency of these conditions, thus solvind Sarason's conjecture.
We give a sufficient condition for subelliptic estimates for the d-bar-Neumann operator on smoothly bounded, pseudoconvex domains in $\mathbb{C}^n$. This condition is a quantified version of McNeal's condition ($\tilde{P}$) for compactness of the d-bar-Neumann operator, and it extends Catlin's condition for subellipticity as it is less stringent.
A theory of global regularity of the d-bar-Neumann operator is developed which unifies the two principal approaches to date, namely the one via compactness due to Kohn-Nirenberg and Catlin, and the one via plurisubharmonic defining functions and/or vector fields that commute approximately with d-bar due to Boas and the author.
