Given a 4d ${\mathcal N}=2$ supersymmetric theory with an ${\mathcal N}=(2,2)$ supersymmetric surface defect, a marginal perturbation of the bulk theory induces a complex structure deformation of the defect moduli space. We describe a concrete way of computing this deformation using the bulk-defect OPE.
I explain how conventional topological defects -- the Abrikosov-Nielsen-Olesen (ANO) string and domain walls -- can acquire non-Abelian moduli localized on their world sheets. The set-up is conceptually similar and generalizes that used by Witten for cosmic strings.
We investigate deformations of extremal near-horizon geometries in Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton theory, including various topological terms, and also in D=11 supergravity. By linearizing the field equations and Bianchi identities over the compact spatial cross-sections of the near-horizon geometry, we prove that the moduli associated with such deformations are constrained by elliptic systems of PDEs. The moduli space of deformations of near-horizon geometries in these theories is therefore shown to be finite dimensional.
We point out that the moduli sector of the $(2,2)$ string compactification with its nonperturbatively preserved non-compact symmetries is a fertile framework to study global topological defects, thus providing a natural source for the large scale structure formation. Based on the target space modular invariance of the nonperturbative superpotential of the four-dimensional N=1 supersymmetric string vacua, topologically stable stringy domain walls are found. They are supersymmetric solutions, thus saturating the Bogomolnyi bound. It is also shown that there are moduli sectors that allow for the …
Boundary conformal field theory is the suitable framework for a microscopic treatment of D-branes in arbitrary CFT backgrounds. In this work, we develop boundary deformation theory in order to study the changes of boundary conditions generated by marginal boundary fields. The deformation parameters may be regarded as continuous moduli of D-branes. We identify a large class of boundary fields which are shown to be truly marginal, and we derive closed formulas describing the associated deformations to all orders in perturbation theory. This allows us to study the global topology properties of th…
We consider the weighted average of a two dimensional CFT, whose target space is $T^2$, over its Narain moduli space. We take as the weighing function the integral kernel which gives rise to $T \bar T$ deformation when applied to the world sheet moduli data of the partition function viewed as vacuum amplitude when the world sheet is a torus. We compute the smeared partition function where this kernel is applied to the target space moduli. Smearing the partition function over the parameter space of a field theory generally leads to the breakdown in the ability to write the partition function as…
We consider N-point deformation of algebraic K3 surfaces. First, we construct two-point deformation of algebraic K3 surfaces by considering algebraic deformation of a pair of commutative algebraic K3 surfaces. In this case, the moduli space of the noncommutative deformations is of dimension 19, the same as the moduli dimension of the complex deformations of commutative algebraic K3 surfaces. Then, we extend this method to the N-point case. In the N-point case, the dimension of deformation moduli space becomes 19N(N-1)/2.
We study the problem of string propagation in a general instanton background for the case of the complete heterotic superstring. We define the concept of generalized HyperK\" ahler manifolds and we relate it to (4,4) superconformal theories. We propose a generalized h-map construction that predicts a universal SU(6) symmetry for the modes of the string excitations moving in an instanton background. We also discuss the role of abstract $N$=4 moduli and, applying it to the particular limit case of the solvable SU(2) X R instanton found by Callan et al. we show that it admits deformations and cor…
We discuss deformations of orbifold singularities on tilted tori in the context of Type IIA orientifold model building with D6-branes on special Lagrangian cycles. Starting from $T^6/(\mathbb{Z}_2 \times \mathbb{Z}_2)$, we mod out an additional $\mathbb{Z}_3$ symmetry to describe phenomenologically appealing backgrounds and reduce to $\mathbb{Z}_3$ and $Ω\mathcal{R}$ invariant orbits of deformations. While D6-branes carrying SO(2N) or USp(2N) gauge groups do not constrain deformations, D6-branes with U(N) gauge groups develop non-vanishing D-terms if they couple to previously singular, now def…
We initiate the study of $T\bar T$-like irrelevant solvable deformations in quantum field theory with boundaries and defects. For this purpose, we employ a general formalism developed in the context of spin chains, which allows us to derive both, the deformed bulk and boundary/defect scattering matrices of integrable models. Using the deformed scattering matrices, we derive the flow equation for the deformed finite volume spectrum, as well as the cylinder partition function and the exact $g$-function.
In this work we investigate two distinct extensions of the deformation procedure introduced in former works on deformed defects. The first extension deals with the use of deformation functions which can assume complex values, and the second concerns the possibility of making the deformation dependent on the defect solution of the model used to implement the deformation. These two extensions bring the deformation procedure to a significantly higher standard and allow to build interesting results, as we explicitly illustrate with examples of current interest to high energy physics.
We study the moduli space of three-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ SQCD with $SU(N)$ gauge group and $F<N$ massless flavors. In the case of an $SU(2)$ theory with a single massless flavor, we explicitly calculate the quantum constraint $YM=1$ and generalize the calculation to models with arbitrary $N$ and $F=N-1$ flavors. In theories with $F<N-1$ flavors, we find that analogous constraints exist in locally defined coordinate charts of the moduli space. The existence of such constraints allows us to show that the Coulomb branch superpotential generated by single monopole effects is equivalent to th…
Starting from the pseudo-${\cal B}_0$ gauge solution for marginal deformations in OSFT, we analytically compute the relation between the perturbative deformation parameter $\tildeλ$ in the solution and the BCFT marginal parameter $λ$, up to fifth order, by evaluating the Ellwood invariants. We observe that the microscopic reason why $\tildeλ$ and $λ$ are different is that the OSFT propagator renormalizes contact term divergences differently from the contour deformation used in BCFT
We study intersecting brane systems that realize a class of singular monopole configurations in four-dimensional Yang-Mills-Higgs theory. Singular monopoles are solutions to the Bogomolny equation on R^3 with a prescribed number of singularities corresponding to the insertion of 't Hooft defects. We use the brane construction to motivate a recent conjecture on the conditions for which the moduli space of solutions is non-empty. We also show how branes provide physical intuition for various aspects of the dimension formula derived in {arXiv:1404.5616}, including the contribution to the dimensio…
We deform a defect conformal field theory by an exactly marginal bulk operator and we consider the dependence on the marginal coupling of flat and spherical defect expectation values. For even dimensional spherical defects we find a logarithmic divergence which can be related to a $a$-type defect anomaly coefficient. This coefficient, for defect theories, is not invariant on the conformal manifold and its dependence on the coupling is controlled to all orders by the one-point function of the associated exactly marginal operator. For odd-dimensional defects, the flat and spherical case exhibit …
We study D2-branes on the K3-fibration P^4_(11222)[8] using matrix factorizations at the Landau-Ginzburg point and analyze their moduli space and superpotentials in detail. We find that the open string moduli space consists of various intersecting branches of different dimensions. Families of D2-branes wrapping rational curves of degree one intersect with bound state branches. The influence of non-toric complex structure deformations is investigated in the Landau-Ginzburg framework, where these deformations arise as bulk moduli from the twisted sectors.
We study possible deformations of BPS supertubes keeping their conserved charges fixed. We show that there is no flat direction to closed supertubes of circular cross section with uniform electric and magnetic fields, and also to open planar supertubes. We also find that there are continuously infinite flat deformations to supertubes of general shape under certain conditions.
We describe semiuniversal deformation spaces for the noncompact surfaces $Z_k := \operatorname{Tot} (\mathcal O_{\mathbb P^1} (-k))$ and prove that any nontrivial deformation $Z_k (τ)$ of $Z_k$ is affine. It is known that the moduli spaces of instantons of charge $j$ on $Z_k$ are quasi-projective varieties of dimension $2j-k-2$. In contrast, our results imply that the moduli spaces of instantons on any nontrivial deformation $Z_k (τ)$ are empty.
We study several classes of marginal deformations of the conformal field theory SU(2) x R. This theory describes the near-horizon region of a stack of parallel and coincident NS5-branes and is related holographically to little string theory. We investigate the supersymmetry properties of these deformations and we elucidate their role in the context of holography. The conformal field theory moduli space contains "non-holographic" operators that do not seem to have a simple interpretation in little string theory. Subsequently, we analyze several NS5-brane configurations in terms of SU(2) x R def…
We consider deformations of torsion-free G2 structures, defined by the G2-invariant 3-form $ϕ$ and compute the expansion of the Hodge star of $ϕ$ to fourth order in the deformations of $ϕ$. By considering M-theory compactified on a G2 manifold, the G2 moduli space is naturally complexified, and we get a Kahler metric on it. Using the expansion of the Hodge star of $ϕ$ we work out the full curvature of this metric and relate it to the Yukawa coupling.
In this paper we use the deformation procedure introduced in former work on deformed defects to investigate several new models for real scalar field. We introduce an interesting deformation function, from which we obtain two distinct families of models, labeled by the parameters that identify the deformation function. We investigate these models, which identify a broad class of polynomial interactions. We find exact solutions describing global defects, and we study the corresponding stability very carefully.
Cohomological Yang-Mills theory is formulated on a noncommutative differentiable four manifold through the $θ$-deformation of its corresponding BRST algebra. The resulting noncommutative field theory is a natural setting to define the $θ$-deformation of Donaldson invariants and they are interpreted as a mapping between the Chevalley-Eilenberg homology of noncommutative spacetime and the Chevalley-Eilenberg cohomology of noncommutative moduli of instantons. In the process we find that in the weak coupling limit the quantum theory is localized at the moduli space of noncommutative instantons.
The self-dual Einstein equations on a compact Riemannian 4-manifold can be expressed as a quadratic condition on the curvature of an $SU(2)$ (spin) connection which is a covariant generalization of the self-dual Yang-Mills equations. Local properties of the moduli space of self-dual Einstein connections are described in the context of an elliptic complex which arises in the linearization of the quadratic equations on the $SU(2)$ curvature. In particular, it is shown that the moduli space is discrete when the cosmological constant is positive; when the cosmological constant is negative the modu…
We apply Kadanoff's theory of marginal deformations of conformal field theories to twistfield deformations of Z_2 orbifold models in K3 moduli space. These deformations lead away from the Z_2 orbifold sub-moduli-space and hence help to explore conformal field theories which have not yet been understood. In particular, we calculate the deformation of the conformal dimensions of vertex operators for p^2<1 in second order perturbation theory.
In this paper D-brane monodromies are studied from a world-sheet point of view. More precisely, defect lines are used to describe the parallel transport of D-branes along deformations of the underlying bulk conformal field theories. This method is used to derive B-brane monodromies in Kahler moduli spaces of non-linear sigma models on projective hypersurfaces. The corresponding defects are constructed at Landau-Ginzburg points in these moduli spaces where matrix factorisation techniques can be used. Transporting them to the large volume phase by means of the gauged linear sigma model we find t…
We study a set of asymmetric deformations of non-critical superstring theories in various dimensions. The deformations arise as Kaehler and complex structure deformations of an orthogonal two-torus comprising of a parallel and a transverse direction in the near-horizon geometry of NS5-branes. The resulting theories have the following intriguing features: Spacetime supersymmetry is broken in a continuous fashion and the masses of the lightest modes are lifted. In particular, no bulk or localized tachyons are generated in the non-supersymmetric vacua. We discuss the effects of these deformations…
We point out that the moduli sector of the $(2,2)$ string compactification with its nonperturbatively preserved non-compact symmetries is a framework to study global topological defects. Based on the target space modular invariance of the nonperturbative superpotential of the four-dimensional $N=1$ supersymmetric string vacua, topologically stable stringy domain walls are found. Explicit supersymmetric solutions for the modulus field and the metric, which saturate the Bogomol'nyi bound, are presented. They interpolate between {\it non-degenerate} vacua. As a corollary, this defines a new notio…
In string field theory an infinitesimal background deformation is implemented as a canonical transformation whose hamiltonian function is defined by moduli spaces of punctured Riemann surfaces having one special puncture. We show that the consistency conditions associated to the commutator of two deformations are implemented by virtue of the existence of moduli spaces of punctured surfaces with two special punctures. The spaces are antisymmetric under the exchange of the special punctures, and satisfy recursion relations relating them to moduli spaces with one special puncture and to string ve…
The complex dimension of the space of exactly marginal deformations for quiver CFTs dual to IIB theory compactified on $Y^{p,q}$ is known to be generically three. Simple general formulas already exist for two of the exactly marginal directions in the space of couplings, one of which corresponds to the sum of the (inverse squared of) gauge couplings, and the other to the $β$-deformation. Here we identify the third exactly marginal direction, which is dual to the modulus $\int B_{2}$ on the gravity side. This identification leads to a relation between the field theory gauge couplings and the vac…
We consider supersymmetric deformations of gauge theories in various dimensions obtained from a String Theory realisation of branes embedded in flux backgrounds. In particular we obtain deformations which take the form of Wilson line defects, where the R-symmetry is twisted into the gauge symmetry. Furthermore we construct higher-order generalisations, also expressed a twisting of the R-symmetry, that have symmetries associated to co-dimension two and three defects.
We study superconformal deformations of the $T_ρ^{\hatρ}[SU(N)]$ theories of Gaiotto-Hanany-Witten, paying special attention to mixed-branch operators with both electrically- and magnetically-charged fields. We explain why all marginal ${\cal N}=2$ operators of an ${\cal N}=4$ CFT$_3$ can be extracted unambiguously from the superconformal index. Computing the index at the appropriate order we show that the mixed moduli in $T_ρ^{\hatρ}[SU(N)]$ theories are double-string operators transforming in the (Adjoint, Adjoint) representation of the electric and magnetic flavour groups, up to some overco…
Conformal moduli spaces of four-dimensional superconformal theories obtained by deformations of a superpotential are considered. These spaces possess a natural metric (a Zamolodchikov metric). This metric is shown to be Kahler. The proof is based on superconformal Ward identities.
In this paper, we will analyse the topological defects in a deformation of a non-abelian gauge theory using the Polyakov variables. The gauge theory will be deformed by the existence of a minimum measurable length scale in the background spacetime. We will construct the Polyakov loops for this deformed non-abelian gauge theory, and use these deformed loop space variables for obtaining a deformed loop space curvature. It will be demonstrated that this curvature will vanish if the deformed Bianchi identities are satisfied. However, it is possible that the original Bianchi identities are satisfie…
We extend the detailed analysis of the quantum moduli space of the cascading SU(p+M) x SU(p) gauge theory in the recent paper of Dymarsky, Klebanov, and Seiberg for the Sp(p+M) x Sp(p) cascading gauge theory, which lives on the world volume of p D3-branes and M fractional D3-branes at the tip of the orientifolded conifold. As in their paper, we also find in this case that the ratio of the deformation parameters of the quantum constraint on the different branches in the gauge theory can be reproduced by the ratio of the deformation parameters of the conifold with different numbers of mobile D3-…
We consider N=2 supersymmetric QCD with the U(N) gauge group (with no Fayet-Iliopoulos term) and N_f flavors of massive quarks deformed by the mass term μfor the adjoint matter, W=μA^2, assuming that N\leq N_f<2N. This deformation breaks N=2 supersymmetry down to N=1. This theory supports non-Abelian flux tubes (strings) which are stabilized by W. They are referred to as F-term stabilized strings. We focus on the studies of such strings in the vacuum in which N squarks condense, at small μ, so that the Z_N strings preserve, in a sense, their BPS nature. We calculate string tensions both in the…
We study the vacuum moduli spaces of 3d N=2 supersymmetric quantum field theories by applying the formalism developed in our previous paper arXiv:1404.5527. The 3d theories can be realized by branes in type IIB string theory, which in a decoupling limit reduce to 4d N=4 super-Yang-Mills theory on an interval with BPS defects inserted. The moduli space of a given 3d theory is obtained by solving a generalization of Nahm's equations with appropriate boundary/junction conditions, along with help from the S-duality of type IIB string theory. Our classical computations reproduce many known results …
We study relevant deformations of an N=1 superconformal theory which is an exactly marginal deformation of U(N) N=4 SUSY Yang-Mills. The resulting theory has a classical Higgs branch that is a complex deformation of the orbifold C^3/Z_n x Z_n that is a non-compact Calabi-Yau space with isolated conifold singularities. At these singular points in moduli space the theory exhibits a duality cascade and flows to a confining theory with a mass gap. By exactly solving the corresponding holomorphic matrix model we compute the exact quantum superpotential generated at the end of the duality cascade an…
In this paper we investigate the relation between complexified Fenchel-Nielsen coordinates and spectral network coordinates on Seiberg-Witten moduli space. The main technique is the comparison of exact expressions for the expectation value of 't Hooft defects in certain 4D $SU(2)$ $\mathcal{N}=2$ gauge theories. We derive an index-like theorem for a class of Dirac operators on singular monopole moduli spaces. Our expression determines the indices of Dirac operators on singular monopole moduli spaces in terms of characteristic numbers for vector bundles over certain Kronheimer-Nakajima quiver v…
It is well known that the moduli space of all deformations of a compact special Lagrangian submanifold $X$ in a Calabi-Yau manifold $Y$ within the class of special Lagrangian submanifolds is isomorphic to the first de Rham cohomology group of $X$. Reinterpreting the embedding data $X\subset Y$ within the mathematical framework of the Batalin-Vilkovisky quantization, we find a natural deformation problem which extends the above moduli space to the full de Rham cohomology group of $X$.
We investigate deformations of $\mathbb{Z}_2$ orbifold singularities on the toroidal orbifold $T^6/(\mathbb{Z}_2\times\mathbb{Z}_6)$ with discrete torsion in the framework of Type IIA orientifold model building with intersecting D6-branes wrapping special Lagrangian cycles. To this aim, we employ the hypersurface formalism developed previously for the orbifold $T^6/(\mathbb{Z}_2\times\mathbb{Z}_2)$ with discrete torsion and adapt it to the $\mathbb{Z}_2\times\mathbb{Z}_6\timesΩ\mathcal{R}$ point group by modding out the remaining $\mathbb{Z}_3$ subsymmetry and the orientifold projection $Ω\mat…
We prove an analog of the Tian-Todorov theorem for twisted generalized Calabi-Yau manifolds; namely, we show that the moduli space of generalized complex structures on a compact twisted generalized Calabi-Yau manifold is unobstructed and smooth. We also construct the extended moduli space and study its Frobenius structure. The physical implications are also discussed.
We study marginal and relevant supersymmetric deformations of the N=4 super-Yang-Mills theory in four dimensions. Our primary innovation is the interpretation of the moduli spaces of vacua of these theories as non-commutative spaces. The construction of these spaces relies on the representation theory of the related quantum algebras, which are obtained from F-term constraints. These field theories are dual to superstring theories propagating on deformations of the AdS_5xS^5 geometry. We study D-branes propagating in these vacua and introduce the appropriate notion of algebraic geometry for non…
We introduce new times in the monodromy preserving equations. While the usual times related to the moduli of complex structures of Riemann curves such as coordinates of marked points, we consider the moduli of generalized complex structures ($W$-structures) as the new times. We consider linear differential matrix equations depending on $W$-structures on an arbitrary Riemann curve. The monodromy preserving equations have a Hamiltonian form. They are derived via the symplectic reduction procedure from a free gauge theory as well as the associate linear problems. The quasi-classical limit of isom…
We introduce the notion of cyclic cohomology of an A-infinity algebra and show that the deformations of an A-infinity algebra which preserve an invariant inner product are classified by this cohomology. We use this result to construct some cycles on the moduli space of algebraic curves. The paper also contains a review of some well known notions and results about Hochschild and cyclic cohomology of associative algebras, A-infinity algebras, and deformation theory of algebras, and includes a discussion of the homology of the graph complex of metric ribbon graphs which is associated to the modul…
A systematic procedure for obtaining defect structures through cyclic deformation chains is introduced and explored in detail. The procedure outlines a set of rules for analytically constructing constraint equations that involve the finite localized energy of cyclically generated defects. The idea of obtaining cyclically deformed defects concerns the possibility of regenerating a primitive (departing) defect structure through successive, unidirectional, and eventually irreversible, deformation processes. Our technique is applied on kink-like and lump-like solutions in models described by a sin…
Sine-Gordon deformed defects that exhibit unusual phenomenological features on the topological charge are investigated. The possibility of a smooth and continuous transition between topological (non null charge) and non-topological (null charge) scenarios of deformed defects supported by sine-Gordon structures is evinced by the analytical calculation of topological charges and localized energy distributions. By describing cyclic deformation chains, we show that a triggering sine-Gordon model simultaneously supports kink and lump-like defects, whose topological mass values are closed by trigono…
For moduli space of stable parabolic bundles on a compact Riemann surface, we derive an explicit formula for the curvature of its canonical line bundle with respect to Quillen's metric and interpret it as a local index theorem for the family of dbar-operators in associated parabolic endomorphism bundles. The formula consists of two terms: one standard (proportional to the canonical Kaehler form on the moduli space), and one nonstandard, called a cuspidal defect, that is defined by means of special values of the Eisenstein-Maass series. The cuspidal defect is explicitly expressed through curvat…
We study Bethe/gauge correspondence at the special locus of Coulomb moduli where the integrable system exhibits the splitting of degenerate levels. For this investigation, we consider the four-dimensional pure $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric $U(N)$ gauge theory, with a half-BPS surface defect constructed with the help of an orbifold or a degenerate gauge vertex. We show that the non-perturbative Dyson-Schwinger equations imply the Schrödinger-type and the Baxter-type differential equations satisfied by the respective surface defect partition functions. At the special locus of Coulomb moduli the…
We interpret the chiral WZNW model with general monodromy as an infinite dimensional quasi-Hamiltonian dynamical system. This interpretation permits to explain the totality of complicated cross-terms in the symplectic structures of various WZNW defects solely in terms of the single concept of the quasi-Hamiltonian fusion. Translated from the WZNW language into that of the moduli space of flat connections on Riemann surfaces, our result gives a compact and transparent characterisation of the symplectic structure of the moduli space of flat connections on a surface with k handles, n boundaries a…
We suggest to compactify the universal covering of the moduli space of complex structures by non-commutative spaces. The latter are described by certain categories of sheaves with connections which are flat along foliations. In the case of abelian varieties this approach gives quantum tori as a non-commutative boundary of the moduli space. Relations to mirror symmetry, modular forms and deformation theory are discussed.
We obtain variational formulas for holomorphic objects on Riemann surfaces with respect to arbitrary local coordinates on the moduli space of complex structures. These formulas are written in terms of a canonical object on the moduli space which corresponds to the pairing between the space of quadratic differentials and the tangent space to the moduli space. This canonical object satisfies certain commutation relations which appear to be the same as the ones that emerged in the integrability theory of Whitham type hierarchies. Driven by this observation, we develop the theory of Whitham type h…
Donaldson-Thomas theory on a Calabi-Yau can be described in terms of a certain six-dimensional cohomological gauge theory. We introduce a certain class of defects in this gauge theory which generalize surface defects in four dimensions. These defects are associated with divisors and are defined by prescribing certain boundary conditions for the gauge fields. We discuss generalized instanton moduli spaces when the theory is defined with a defect and propose a generalization of Donaldson-Thomas invariants. These invariants arise by studying torsion free coherent sheaves on Calabi-Yau varieties w…
We consider lattice deformations (both continuous and topological) in the hexagonal lattice Hubbard model in the tight binding approximation to graphene, involving operators with the range up to next-to-neighbor. In the low energy limit, we find that these deformations give rise to couplings of the electronic Dirac field to an external scalar (Yukawa) and gauge fields. The fields are expressed in terms of original defects. As a by-product we establish that the next-to-nearest order is the minimal range of deformations which produces the complete gauge and scalar fields. We consider an example …
