Significant efforts are being directed towards developing a quantum annealer capable of solving combinatorial optimization problems. The challenges are Hamiltonian programming and large-scale implementations. Here we report quantum annealing demonstration of Ising Hamiltonians programmed with up to $N=22$ spins mapped on various Cayley tree graphs. Experiments are performed with a Rydberg-atom quantum simulator, in which rubidium single atoms are arranged in three dimensional space in such a way that their Rydberg atoms and blockaded strong couplings respectively represent the nodes and edges of each graph. Three different Cayley-tree graphs of $Z=3$ neighbors and of up to $S=4$ shells are constructed, and their ground-state phases and Néel's order formations are probed. In good agreement with model calculations, the anti-ferromagnetic phase in regular Cayley trees and frustrated competing ground-states in a dual-center Cayley tree are directly observed. This demonstrates the possibilities of high-dimensional qubit connection programming in quantum simulators.
We study quantum annealing of pure and random transverse Ising chains that are coupled to boson baths, using a novel numerical method based on the combination of the quasi-adiabatic propagation path integral (QUAPI) and the matrix product state (MPS) formalisms. We present numerical results on systems up to 64 spins and conclude that the baths disturb quantum annealing of pure and random Ising chains. The numerical method to compute the reduced density matrix is described in detail.
We propose a nonadiabatic approach to quantum annealing, in which we repeat quantum annealing in nonadiabatic time scales, and collect the final states of many realizations to find the ground state among them. In this way, we replace the diffculty of long annealing time in adiabatic quantum annealing by another problem of the number of nonsidabatic (short-time) trials. The one-dimensional transverse-field Ising model is used to test this idea, and it is shown that nonadiabatic quantum annealing has the same computational complexity to find the ground state as the conventional adiabatic anneali…
Probing the lowest energy configuration of a complex system by quantum annealing was recently found to be more effective than its classical, thermal counterpart. Comparing classical and quantum Monte Carlo annealing protocols on the random two-dimensional Ising model we confirm the superiority of quantum annealing relative to classical annealing. We also propose a theory of quantum annealing, based on a cascade of Landau-Zener tunneling events. For both classical and quantum annealing, the residual energy after annealing is inversely proportional to a power of the logarithm of the annealing ti…
In this paper we show quantum fluctuation effect of fully frustrated Ising spin systems. Quantum annealing has been expected to be an efficient method to find ground state of optimization problems. However it is not clear when to use the quantum annealing. In order to clarify when the quantum annealing works well, we have to study microscopic properties of quantum annealing. In fully frustrated Ising spin systems, there are macroscopically degenerated ground states. When we apply quantum annealing to fully frustrated systems, we cannot obtain each ground state with the same probability. This n…
We show clear evidence of a quadratic speedup of a quantum annealing (QA) Schroedinger dynamics over a Glauber master-equation simulated annealing (SA) for a random Ising model in one dimension, via an equal-footing exact deterministic dynamics of the Jordan-Wigner fermionized problems. This is remarkable, in view of the arguments of Katzgraber et al., PRX 4, 021008 (2014), since SA does not encounter any phase transition, while QA does. We also find a second remarkable result: that a "quantum-inspired" imaginary-time Schroedinger QA provides a further exponential speedup, i.e., an asymptotic …
Quantum annealing method has been widely attracted attention in statistical physics and information science since it is expected to be a powerful method to obtain the best solution of optimization problem as well as simulated annealing. The quantum annealing method was incubated in quantum statistical physics. This is an alternative method of the simulated annealing which is well-adopted for many optimization problems. In the simulated annealing, we obtain a solution of optimization problem by decreasing temperature (thermal fluctuation) gradually. In the quantum annealing, in contrast, we dec…
The strongest evidence for superiority of quantum annealing on spin glass problems has come from comparing simulated quantum annealing using quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) methods to simulated classical annealing [G. Santoro et al., Science 295, 2427(2002)]. Motivated by experiments on programmable quantum annealing devices we revisit the question of when quantum speedup may be expected for Ising spin glass problems. We find that even though a better scaling compared to simulated classical annealing can be achieved for QMC simulations, this advantage is due to time discretization and measurements w…
Quantum annealing is a heuristic algorithm for searching the ground state of an Ising model. Heuristic algorithms aim to obtain near-optimal solutions with a reasonable computation time. Accordingly, many algorithms have so far been proposed. In general, the performance of heuristic algorithms strongly depends on the instance of the combinatorial optimization problem to be solved because they escape the local minima in different ways. Therefore, combining several algorithms to exploit their complementary strength is effective for obtaining highly accurate solutions for a wide range of combinat…
The main aim of the present paper is to prove the existence of a phase transition in quantum Markov chain (QMC) scheme for the Ising type models on a Cayley tree. Note that this kind of models do not have one-dimensional analogous, i.e. the considered model persists only on trees. In this paper, we provide a more general construction of forward QMC. In that construction, a QMC is defined as a weak limit of finite volume states with boundary conditions, i.e. QMC depends on the boundary conditions. Our main result states the existence of a phase transition for the Ising model with competing inte…
Noisy mean field annealing (NMFA) is an algorithm that mimics a coherent Ising machine (CIM), which is an optical system for solving Ising problems. The NMFA has reproduced the solver performance of the CIM for systems of limited size even though it simplifies the interaction between spins with a mean-field approximation. However, recent experiments observing various thermodynamic quantities have revealed that the CIM can capture the phase transitions of the two-dimensional Ising models that the mean field cannot capture. This situation leads to a fundamental question as to how well the NMFA c…
Quantum annealing aims at solving optimization problems efficiently by preparing the ground state of an Ising spin-Hamiltonian quantum mechanically. A prerequisite of building a quantum annealer is the implementation of programmable long-range two-, three- or multi-spin Ising interactions. We discuss an architecture, where the required spin interactions are implemented via two-port, or in general multi-port quantum Ising wires connecting the spins of interest. This quantum annealing architecture of spins connected by Ising quantum wires can be realized by exploiting the three dimensional (3D) …
The coherent Ising machine (CIM) enables efficient sampling of low-lying energy states of the Ising Hamiltonian with all-to-all connectivity by encoding the spins in the amplitudes of pulsed modes in an optical parametric oscillator (OPO). The interaction between the pulses is realized by means of measurement-based optoelectronic feedforward which enhances the gain for lower-energy spin configurations. We present an efficient method of simulating the CIM on a classical computer that outperforms the CIM itself as well as the noisy mean-field annealer in terms of both the quality of the samples …
Recently, Heim, Ronnow, Isakov and Troyer [Science 348 (2015) 215] have reported that Monte Carlo simulations for the Ising spin glass model on the square lattice in the physically relevant continuous-imaginary-time limit do not show superiority of quantum annealing (QA) using transverse field against classical annealing (CA). Although the QA schedule that they had used has been using conventionally, however the QA schedule mathematically has no guarantee that the used schedule is the best QA schedule for performance of optimization. We propose a new QA schedule for studying transverse-field-b…
We introduce transverse ferromagnetic interactions, in addition to a simple transverse field, to quantum annealing of the random-field Ising model to accelerate convergence toward the target ground state. The conventional approach using only the transverse-field term is known to be plagued by slow convergence when the true ground state has strong ferromagnetic characteristics for the random-field Ising model. The transverse ferromagnetic interactions are shown to improve the performance significantly in such cases. This conclusion is drawn from the analyses of the energy eigenvalues of instant…
We have proposed the energy landscape transformation of Ising problems (ELTIP), which changes the combination of the state and eigenvalue without changing all the original eigenvalues [arXiv:2202.05927]. We study how the ELTIP affects the anti-crossing between two levels of the ground and first excited states during quantum annealing. We use a 5-spin maximum-weighted independent set for the problem to numerically investigate the anticrossing. For comparison, we introduce a non-stoquastic Hamiltonian that adds antiferromagnetic interaction to the normal transverse magnetic field. Annealing with…
Quantum annealing tends to be more difficult as the energy landscape of the problem becomes complicated with many local minima. We have found a transformation for changing the energy landscape that swaps the eigenvalues and paired states without changing the eigenvalues of the instance at all. The transformation is basically a partial recombination of the two-spin interaction coefficient Jij and the longitudinal magnetic field interaction coefficient hi. The Hamming distance corresponding to a barrier between the states changes by the transformation, which in turn affects the ground state conv…
We developed a non-Hermitian quantum optimization algorithm to find the ground state of the ferromagnetic Ising model with up to 1024 spins (qubits). Our approach leads to significant reduction of the annealing time. Analytical and numerical results demonstrate that the total annealing time is proportional to ln N, where N is the number of spins. This encouraging result is important in using classical computers in combination with quantum algorithms for the fast solutions of NP-complete problems. Additional research is proposed for extending our dissipative algorithm to more complicated proble…
Combinatorial optimization problems are computationally hard in general, but they are ubiquitous in our modern life. A coherent Ising machine (CIM) based on a multiple-pulse degenerate optical parametric oscillator (DOPO) is an alternative approach to solve these problems by a specialized physical computing system. To evaluate its potential performance, computational experiments are performed on maximum cut (MAX-CUT) problems against traditional algorithms such as semidefinite programming relaxation of Goemans-Williamson and simulated annealing by Kirkpatrick, et al. The numerical results empi…
We compare the performance of quantum annealing (QA, through Schrödinger dynamics) and simulated annealing (SA, through a classical master equation) on the $p$-spin infinite range ferromagnetic Ising model, by slowly driving the system across its equilibrium, quantum or classical, phase transition. When the phase transition is second-order ($p=2$, the familiar two-spin Ising interaction) SA shows a remarkable exponential speed-up over QA. For a first-order phase transition ($p \ge 3$, i.e., with multi-spin Ising interactions), in contrast, the classical annealing dynamics appears to remain stu…
We demonstrate that the performance of a quantum annealer on hard random Ising optimization problems can be substantially improved using quantum annealing correction (QAC). Our error correction strategy is tailored to the D-Wave Two device. We find that QAC provides a statistically significant enhancement in the performance of the device over a classical repetition code, improving as a function of problem size as well as hardness. Moreover, QAC provides a mechanism for overcoming the precision limit of the device, in addition to correcting calibration errors. Performance is robust even to miss…
A non-Hermitian quantum optimization algorithm is created and used to find the ground state of an antiferromagnetic Ising chain. We demonstrate analytically and numerically (for up to N=1024 spins) that our approach leads to a significant reduction of the annealing time that is proportional to $\ln N$, which is much less than the time (proportional to $N^2$) required for the quantum annealing based on the corresponding Hermitian algorithm. We propose to use this approach to achieve similar speed-up for NP-complete problems by using classical computers in combination with quantum algorithms.
We study the frustrated Ising model on the two-dimensional $L \times L$ square lattice with ferromagnetic (FM) nearest-neighbor and antiferromagnetic diagonal-neighbor interactions using the D-wave quantum annealing machine (D-QAM) with 5000+ qubits composed on structure of the Pegasus graph. As the former Monte Carlo and mean field results, we find the FM to stripe order phase transition, through observations of the magnetization $M$, energy, magnetic susceptibility and structure factor. We also analyze probability which occurs any $M$ at a given interaction for many quantum annealing shots t…
Frustration represents an essential feature in the behavior of magnetic materials when constraints on the microscopic Hamiltonian cannot be satisfied simultaneously. This gives rise to exotic phases of matter including spin liquids, spin ices, and stripe phases. Here we demonstrate an approach to understanding the microscopic effects of frustration by computing the phases of a 468-spin Shastry-Sutherland Ising Hamiltonian using a quantum annealer. Our approach uses mean-field boundary conditions to mitigate effects of finite size and defects alongside an iterative quantum annealing protocol to…
We study the role of Hamiltonian complexity in the performance of quantum annealers. We consider two general classes of annealing Hamiltonians: stoquastic ones, which can be simulated efficiently using the quantum Monte Carlo algorithm, and nonstoquastic ones, which cannot be treated efficiently. We implement the latter by adding antiferromagnetically coupled two-spin driver terms to the traditionally studied transverse-field Ising model, and compare their performance to that of similar stoquastic Hamiltonians with ferromagnetically coupled additional terms. We focus on a model of long-range I…
We present an implementation of Quantum Annealing (QA) via lattice Green's function Monte Carlo (GFMC), focusing on its application to the Ising spin-glass in transverse field. In particular, we study whether or not such method is more effective than the Path-Integral Monte Carlo (PIMC) based QA, as well as classical simulated annealing (CA), previously tested on the same optimization problem. We identify the issue of importance sampling, i.e., the necessity of possessing reasonably good (variational) trial wavefunctions, as the key point of the algorithm. We have considered two possible class…
Quantum annealing aims to solve combinatorial optimization problems mapped on to Ising interactions between quantum spins. A critical factor that limits the success of a quantum annealer is its sensitivity to noise, and intensive research is consequently focussed towards developing noise-resilient annealers. Here we propose a new paradigm for quantum annealing with a scalable network of all-to-all connected, two-photon driven Kerr-nonlinear resonators. Each of these resonators encode an Ising spin in a robust degenerate subspace formed by two coherent states of opposite phases. The fully-conne…
We study the performance of quantum annealing for two sets of problems, namely, 2-satisfiability (2-SAT) problems represented by Ising-type Hamiltonians, and nonstoquastic problems which are obtained by adding extra couplings to the 2-SAT problem Hamiltonians. In addition, we add to the transverse Ising-type Hamiltonian used for quantum annealing a third term, the trigger Hamiltonian with ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic couplings, which vanishes at the beginning and end of the annealing process. We also analyze some problem instances using the energy spectrum, average energy or overlap of t…
We derive a generic bound on the rate of decrease of transverse field for quantum annealing to converge to the ground state of a generic Ising model when quantum annealing is formulated as an infinite-time process. Our theorem is based on a rigorous upper bound on the excitation probability in the infinite-time limit and is a mathematically rigorous counterpart of a previously known result derived only from the leading-order term of the asymptotic expansion of adiabatic condition. Since our theorem gives a sufficient condition of convergence for a generic transverse-field Ising model, any spec…
Simulated Quantum Annealing (SQA), that is emulating a Quantum Annealing (QA) dynamics on a classical computer by a Quantum Monte Carlo whose parameters are changed during the simulation, is a well established computational strategy to cope with the exponentially large Hilbert space. It has enjoyed some early successes but has also raised more recent criticisms. Here we investigate, on the paradigmatic case of a one-dimensional transverse field Ising chain, two issues related to SQA in its Path-Integral implementation: the question of Monte Carlo vs physical (Schrödinger) dynamics and the issu…
The rotational and fine structure of open-shell molecules in a $Σ$ electronic state gives rise to crossings between Zeeman states of different parity. These crossings become avoided in the presence of an electric field. We propose an algorithm that encodes Ising models into qubits defined by pairs of $^2Σ$ molecules sharing an excitation near these avoided crossings. This can be used to realize a transverse field Ising model tunable by an external electric or magnetic field, suitable for quantum annealing applications. We perform dynamical calculations for several examples with one- and two-di…
Ising spin Hamiltonians are often used to encode a computational problem in their ground states. Quantum Annealing (QA) computing searches for such a state by implementing a slow time-dependent evolution from an easy-to-prepare initial state to a low energy state of a target Ising Hamiltonian of quantum spins, $H_I$. Here, we point to the existence of an analytical solution for such a problem for an arbitrary $H_I$ beyond the adiabatic limit for QA. This solution provides insights into the accuracy of nonadiabatic computations. Our QA protocol in the pseudo-adiabatic regime leads to a monotoni…
Quantum simulation has emerged as a valuable arena for demonstrating and understanding the capabilities of near-term quantum computers. Quantum annealing has been used successfully in simulating a range of open quantum systems, both at equilibrium and out of equilibrium. However, in all previous experiments, annealing has been too slow to simulate a closed quantum system coherently, due to the onset of thermal effects from the environment. Here we demonstrate coherent evolution through a quantum phase transition in the paradigmatic setting of the 1D transverse-field Ising chain, using up to 20…
In a typical quantum annealing protocol, the system starts with a transverse field Hamiltonian which is gradually turned off and replaced by a longitudinal Ising Hamiltonian. The ground state of the Ising Hamiltonian encodes the solution to the computational problem of interest, and the state overlap with this ground state gives the success probability of the annealing protocol. The form of the annealing schedule can have a significant impact on the ground state overlap at the end of the anneal, so precise control over these annealing schedules can be a powerful tool for increasing success pro…
Relations of simulated annealing and quantum annealing are studied by a mapping from the transition matrix of classical Markovian dynamics of the Ising model to a quantum Hamiltonian and vice versa. It is shown that these two operators, the transition matrix and the Hamiltonian, share the eigenvalue spectrum. Thus, if simulated annealing with slow temperature change does not encounter a difficulty caused by an exponentially long relaxation time at a first-order phase transition, the same is true for the corresponding process of quantum annealing in the adiabatic limit. One of the important dif…
Here we consider using quantum annealing to solve Set Cover with Pairs (SCP), an NP-hard combinatorial optimization problem that play an important role in networking, computational biology, and biochemistry. We show an explicit construction of Ising Hamiltonians whose ground states encode the solution of SCP instances. We numerically simulate the time-dependent Schrödinger equation in order to test the performance of quantum annealing for random instances and compare with that of simulated annealing. We also discuss explicit embedding strategies for realizing our Hamiltonian construction on th…
The Potts model is a generalization of the Ising model with $Q>2$ components. In the fully connected ferromagnetic Potts model, a first-order phase transition is induced by varying thermal fluctuations. Therefore, the computational time required to obtain the ground states by simulated annealing exponentially increases with the system size. This study analytically confirms that the transverse magnetic-field quantum annealing induces a first-order phase transition. This result implies that quantum annealing does not exponentially accelerate the ground-state search of the ferromagnetic Potts mod…
A shorter processing time is desirable for quantum computation to minimize the effects of noise. We propose a simple procedure to variationally determine a set of parameters in the transverse-field Ising model for quantum annealing appended with a field along the $y$ axis. The method consists of greedy optimization of the signs of coefficients of the $y$-field term based on the outputs of short annealing processes. We test the idea in the ferromagnetic system with all-to-all couplings and spin-glass problems, and find that the method outperforms the traditional form of quantum annealing and si…
Graph structure of quantum spin networks plays an essential role in applying quantum annealing (QA). The Ising model is the typical choice to describe the interactions between the spins in the networks. Here, we explore the interplay of different interaction types between the spins and the structure of the underlying network on the performance of QA. Specifically, we consider the Heisenberg XY and antisymmetric anisotropic exchange interaction models, in addition to the usual Ising Model, in graph structures ranging from linear chains to complete graphs with different connectivities. We find t…

Quantum Annealing (QA) was originally intended for accelerating the solution of combinatorial optimization tasks that have natural encodings as Ising models. However, recent experiments on QA hardware platforms have demonstrated that, in the operating regime corresponding to weak interactions, the QA hardware behaves like a noisy Gibbs sampler at a hardware-specific effective temperature. This work builds on those insights and identifies a class of small hardware-native Ising models that are robust to noise effects and proposes a procedure for executing these models on QA hardware to maximize …
We propose a two qubit experiment for validating tunable antiferromagnetic $XX$ interactions in quantum annealing. Such interactions allow the time-dependent Hamiltonian to be non-stoquastic, and the instantaneous ground state can have negative amplitudes in the computational basis. Our construction relies on how the degeneracy of the Ising Hamiltonian's ground states is broken away from the end point of the anneal: above a certain value of the antiferromagnetic $XX$ interaction strength, the perturbative ground state at the end of the anneal changes from a symmetric to an antisymmetric state.…
We discuss quantum annealing of the two-dimensional transverse-field Ising model on a D-Wave device, encoded on $L \times L$ lattices with $L \le 32$. Analyzing the residual energy and deviation from maximal magnetization in the final classical state, we find an optimal $L$ dependent annealing rate $v$ for which the two quantities are minimized. The results are well described by a phenomenological model with two powers of $v$ and $L$-dependent prefactors to describe the competing effects of reduced quantum fluctuations (for which we see evidence of the Kibble-Zurek mechanism) and increasing no…
Current quantum annealing (QA) hardware suffers from practical limitations such as finite temperature, sparse connectivity, small qubit numbers, and control error. We propose new algorithms for mapping boolean constraint satisfaction problems (CSPs) onto QA hardware mitigating these limitations. In particular we develop a new embedding algorithm for mapping a CSP onto a hardware Ising model with a fixed sparse set of interactions, and propose two new decomposition algorithms for solving problems too large to map directly into hardware. The mapping technique is locally-structured, as hardware c…
Preparing ground states of Hamiltonians is important in the condensed matter physics and the quantum chemistry. The interaction Hamiltonians typically contain not only diagonal but also off-diagonal elements. Although quantum annealing provides a way to prepare a ground state of a Hamiltonian, we can only use the Hamiltonian with Ising interaction by using currently available commercial quantum annealing devices. In this work, we propose a quantum annealing for the XXZ model, which contains both Ising interaction and energy-exchange interaction, by using inductively coupled superconducting flu…
Finding an energy minimum in the Ising model is an exemplar objective, associated with many combinatorial optimization problems, that is computationally hard in general, but occurs in all areas of modern science. There are several numerical methods, providing solution for the medium size Ising spin systems. However, they are either computationally slow and badly parallelized, or do not give sufficiently good results for the large systems. In this paper, we present a highly parallel algorithm, called Mean-field Annealing from a Random State (MARS), incorporating the best features of the classic…
