How does the low surface brightness galaxies (LSBGs) form stars and assemble the stellar mass is one of the most important questions to understand the LSBG population. We select a sample of 381 HI bright LSBGs with both Far Ultraviolet (FUV) and Near Infrared (NIR) observation to investigate the star formation rate (SFR) and stellar mass scales, and the growth mode. We measure the UV and NIR radius of our sample, which represent the star-forming and stellar mass distribution scales. We also compare the UV and H band radius-stellar mass relation with the archive data, to identify the SFR and stellar mass structure difference between the LSBG population and other galaxies. Since galaxy HI mass has a tight correlation with the HI radius, we can also compare the HI and UV radii to understand the distribution of the HI gas and star formation activities. Our results show that most of the HI selected LSBGs have extended star formation structure. The stellar mass distribution of LSBGs may have a similar structure as the disk galaxies at the same stellar mass bins, while the star-forming activity of LSBGs happens at a larger radius than the high surface density galaxies, which may help to select the LSBG sample from the wide-field deep u band image survey. The HI also distributed at a larger radius, implying a steeper (or no) Kennicutt-Schmidt relation for LSBGs.
We study the near-infrared (NIR) scattering in LDN 1642, its correlation with the cloud structure, and the ability of dust models to simultaneously explain sub-millimetre emission, NIR extinction, and NIR scattering. We use observations from the HAWK-I instrument to measure the NIR surface brightness and extinction. These are compared with Herschel data on dust emission and, with radiative transfer modelling, with predictions calculated for different dust models. We find an optical depth ratio $τ(250\,μ{\rm m})/τ(J)\approx 10^{-3}$, confirming earlier findings of high sub-millimetre emissivity…
We present medium-resolution spectra ($R \sim 2000$--4000) at 0.4--1.0\,$μ$m and 0.7--2.5\,$μ$m of 16 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) selected with red color in the near-infrared (NIR) of $J - K > 2.0$ mag at $z \sim 0.3$. We fit the H$β$, H$α$, P$β$, and P$α$ lines from these spectra to obtain their luminosities and line widths. We derive the $E(B-V)$ color excess values of the NIR-red AGNs using two methods, one based on the line-luminosity ratios and another based on the continuum slopes. The two $E(B-V)$ values agree with each other at rms dispersion $\sim$ 0.249. About half of the NIR-red A…
We investigate the structural properties of the underlying hosts of 34 blue compact dwarf (BCD) galaxies with deep near-infrared (NIR) photometry. The BCD sample is selected from the Cosmic Assembly Near-IR Deep Extragalactic Legacy Survey in the Great observatories origins Deep Survey North and South fields. We extract the surface brightness profile (SBP) in the optical F 435W and NIR F 160W bands. The SBPs of BCDs in the H band reach 26 mag arcsec^-2 at the 3σlevel, which is so far the deepest NIR imaging of BCDs. Then we fit the SBPs with one- and two- component Sersic models. About half of…
We present a catalogue of an HI-selected sample of 1129 low surface brightness galaxies (LSBGs) searched from the alpha.40-SDSS DR7 survey. This sample, consisting of various types of galaxies in terms of luminosity and morphology, has extended the parameter space covered by the existing LSBG samples. Based on a subsample of 173 LSBGs which are selected from our entire LSBG sample to have the 2-horn shapes of the HI line profiles, minor-to-major axial ratios (b/a) less than 0.6 and signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) of HI detection greater than 6.5, we investigated the Tully-Fisher relation (TFr) of …
We present a narrow $\rm Hα$-band imaging survey of 357 low surface brightness galaxies (LSBGs) that are selected from the spring sky region of the 40% Arecibo Legacy Fast Arecibo L-band Feed Array (ALFALFA) HI Survey. All the $\rm Hα$ images are obtained from the 2.16 m telescope, operated by Xinglong Observatory of the National Astronomical Observatories, Chinese Academy of Sciences. We provide the $\rm Hα$ fluxes and derive the global star formation rates (SFRs) of LSBGs after the Galactic extinction, internal extinction, and [NII] contamination correction. Comparing to normal star-forming …
AGNs and Host Galaxies in COSMOS-Web. I. NIRCam Images, PSF Models and Initial Results on X-ray-selected Broad-line AGNs at $0.35\lesssim z \lesssim 3.5$
We present the observed H$α$ flux and derived star formation rates (SFRs) for a fall sample of low$-$surface$-$brightness galaxies (LSBGs). The sample is selected from the fall sky region of the 40$\%$ ALFALFA {\ion{H}{1}} survey $-$ SDSS DR7 photometric data, and all the $Hα$ images were obtained using the 2.16 m telescope, operated by the National Astronomy Observatories, Chinese Academy of Sciences. A total of 111 LSBGs were observed and $Hα$ flux was measured in 92 of them. Though almost all the LSBGs in our sample are {\ion{H}{1}}$-$rich, their SFRs derived from the extinction and filter$…

We present the first attempt to select AGN using long-term NIR variability. By analysing the K-band light curves of all the galaxies in the UKIDSS Ultra Deep Survey, the deepest NIR survey over ~1 sq degree, we have isolated 393 variable AGN candidates. A comparison to other selection techniques shows that only half of the variable sources are also selected using either deep Chandra X-ray imaging or IRAC colour selection, suggesting that using NIR variability can locate AGN that are missed by more standard selection techniques. In particular, we find that long-term NIR variability identifies A…
Low Surface Brightness Galaxies selected from the 40% sky area of the ALFALFA HI survey.I.Sample and statistical properties
We investigate the value of the near-infrared imaging from upcoming surveys for constraining the ellipticities of galaxies. We select galaxies between 0.5 < z < 3 that are brighter than expected Euclid sensitivity limits from the GOODS-S and N fields in CANDELS. The co-added CANDELS/HST V+I and J+H images are degraded in resolution and sensitivity to simulate Euclid-quality optical and near-infrared (NIR) images. We then run GALFIT on these simulated images and find that optical and NIR provide similar performance in measuring galaxy ellipticities at redshifts 0.5 < z < 3. At z > 1.0, the NIR-…
We use data from the All Wavelength Extended Groth Strip International Survey to construct stacked X-ray maps of optically bright active galaxies (AGN) and an associated control sample of galaxies at high redshift (z less than 0.6). From our analysis of the surface brightness profiles obtained from these X-ray maps, we find evidence of feedback from the active nuclei. We find that excluding galaxies and AGN, residing in group environments, from our samples enhances the significance of our detection. Our results support the tentative findings of Chatterjee et al. who use X-ray selected AGN for …

A Near-Infrared Spectroscopic Survey of K-selected Galaxies at z ~ 2.3: Comparison of Stellar Population Synthesis Codes and Constraints from the Rest-frame NIR
Breaks in the surface brightness profiles in the outer regions of galactic discs are thought to have formed by various internal and external processes, and by studying the breaks we aim to better understand what processes are responsible for the evolution of the outer discs. We use a large well-defined sample to study how common the breaks are, and whether their properties depend on galaxy stellar mass or observed wavelength. We study radial surface brightness profiles of 753 galaxies, obtained from the $3.6 μm$ images of the Spitzer Survey of Stellar Structure in Galaxies (S$^4$G), and the $K…

We present a near-infrared (NIR) imaging study of barred low surface brightness (LSB) galaxies using the TIFR near-infrared Spectrometer and Imager (TIRSPEC). LSB galaxies are dark matter dominated, late type spirals that have low luminosity stellar disks but large neutral hydrogen (HI) gas disks. Using SDSS images of a very large sample of LSB galaxies derived from the literature, we found that the barred fraction is only 8.3%. We imaged twenty five barred LSB galaxies in the J, H, K$_S$ wavebands and twenty nine in the K$_S$ band. Most of the bars are much brighter than their stellar disks, …

Going deeper into the dark with COSMOS-Web: JWST unveils the total contribution of Radio-Selected NIRfaint galaxies to the cosmic Star Formation Rate Density
We analyze a set of optical-to-near-infrared long-slit nuclear spectra of 16 infrared-luminous spiral galaxies. All of the studied sources present H$_2$ emission, which reflects the star-forming nature of our sample, and they clearly display H I emission lines in the optical. Their continua contain many strong stellar absorption lines, with the most common features due to Ca I, Ca II, Fe I, Na I, Mg I, in addition to prominent absorption bands of TiO, VO, ZrO, CN and CO. We report a homogeneous set of equivalent width (EW) measurements for 45 indices, from optical to NIR species for the 16 sta…
Using $I$-band images of 35 nearby ($z<0.1$) type 1 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) obtained with Hubble Space Telescope, selected from the 70-month Swift-BAT X-ray source catalog, we investigate the photometric properties of the host galaxies. With a careful treatment of the point-spread function (PSF) model and imaging decomposition, we robustly measure the $I$-band brightness and the effective radius of bulges in our sample. Along with black hole (BH) mass estimates from single-epoch spectroscopic data, we present the relation between BH mass and $I$-band bulge luminosity ($M_{\rm BH}-M_{I,\r…
In this work we investigate the far-UV to NIR shape of the dust attenuation curve of a sample of IR selected dust obscured (U)LIRGs at z$\sim$2. The spectral energy distributions (SEDs) are fitted with CIGALE, a physically-motivated spectral synthesis model based on energy balance. Its flexibility allows us to test a wide range of different analytical prescriptions for the dust attenuation curve, including the well-known Calzetti and Charlot & Fall curves, and modified versions of them. The attenuation curves computed under the assumption of our reference double power-law model are in very goo…
There is growing evidence for disk-mediated accretion being the dominant mode of star formation across nearly the whole stellar mass spectrum. The stochastic nature of this process has been realized which implies an inherent source variability. It can be traced more easily for low-mass YSOs (LMYSOs) since high-mass YSOs (HMYSOs) are still embedded even when reaching the ZAMS. While variable reflection nebulae around LMYSOs were among the earliest signs of star formation, little is known on the variability of scattered light from embedded clusters, the birthplaces of HMYSOs. Since the few most …
X-ray selected samples are known to miss galaxy clusters that are gas poor and have a low surface brightness. This is different for the optically selected samples such as the X-ray Unbiased Selected Sample (XUCS). We characterise the origin of galaxy clusters that are gas poor and have a low surface-brightness by studying covariances between various cluster properties at fixed mass using hydrodynamic cosmological simulations. We extracted approx. 1800 galaxy clusters from a high-resolution Magneticum hydrodynamic cosmological simulation and computed covariances at fixed mass of the following p…
We present extended Lyman-α (Lyα) emission out to 800 kpc of 1034 [O III]-selected galaxies at redshifts 1.9<z<2.35 using the Hobby-Eberly Telescope Dark Energy Experiment (HETDEX). The locations and redshifts of the galaxies are taken from the 3D-HST survey. The median-stacked surface brightness profile of Lyα emission of the [O III]-selected galaxies agrees well with that of 968 bright Lyα-emitting galaxies (LAEs) at r>40 kpc from the galaxy centers. The surface brightness in the inner parts (r<10 kpc) around the [O III]-selected galaxies, however, is ten times fainter than that of the LAEs.…

I present an overview of the JWST Advanced Deep Extragalactic Survey (JADES), a joint program of the JWST/NIRCam and NIRSpec Guaranteed Time Observations (GTO) teams involving 950 hours of observation. We will target two well-studied fields with excellent supporting data (e.g., from HST-CANDELS): GOODS-North and South, including the Ultra Deep Field. The science goal of JADES is to chart galaxy evolution at z > 2, and potentially out to z > 10, using the rest-frame optical and near-IR though observations from $\approx$ 1 - 5 $μ$m. Multi-colour NIRCam imaging with 9 filters will enable photomet…
