We present results of an analysis of the J, H, and K$_s$ 2MASS images of 139 spiral edge-on galaxies selected from the Revised Flat Galaxies Catalog. The basic structural parameters scalelength (h), scaleheight (z_0), and central surface brightness of the stellar disks (mu_0) are determined for all selected galaxies in the NIR bands. The mean relative ratios of the scaleheights of the thin stellar disks in the J:H:K$_s$ bands are 1.16:1.08:1.00, respectively. Comparing the scaleheights obtained from the NIR bands for the same objects, we estimate the scaleheights of the thin stellar disks corrected for the internal extinction. We find that the extinction-corrected scaleheight is, on average, 11% smaller than that in the K-band. Using the extinction-corrected structural parameters, we find that the dark-to-luminous mass ratio is, on average, 1.3 for the galaxies in our sample within the framework of a simplified galactic model. The relative thicknesses of the stellar disks z_0/h correlates with their face-on central surface brightnesses obtained from the 2MASS images. We also find that the scaleheight of the stellar disks shows no systematic growth with radius in most of our galaxies.
We investigate the effects of ram pressure stripping on gas-rich disk galaxies in the cluster environment. Ram pressure stripping principally effects the atomic gas in disk galaxies, stripping away outer disk gas to a truncation radius. We demonstrate that the drag force exerted on truncated gas disks is passed to the stellar disk, and surrounding dark matter through their mutual gravity. Using a toy model of ram pressure stripping, we show that this can drag a stellar disk and dark matter cusp off centre within it's dark matter halo by several kiloparsecs. We present a simple analytical descr…
In order to understand the physical mechanism underlying non-steady stellar spiral arms in disk galaxies we performed a series of N-body simulations with 1.2 and 8 million particles. The initial conditions were chosen to follow Kuijken-Dubinski models. In this work we present the results of a sub-sample of our simulations in which we experiment with different disk central radial velocity dispersion and the disk scale height.
Several mechanisms of bar formation in stellar galactic disks are considered, including Toomre swing amplification and normal mode approach. On example of the well-known model of Kuzmin--Toomre using N-body simulations it was shown that the stellar bar is developed as a result of the evolution of an unstable normal mode. The pattern speed and the growth rate found agree well with linear perturbation theory. Nonlinear evolution of the bar is followed. Role of the growing transient spirals in bar formation is discussed.
We present the results of integral-field spectroscopic observations of the two disk galaxies NGC 3593 and NGC 4550 obtained with VIMOS/VLT. Both galaxies are known to host 2 counter-rotating stellar disks, with the ionized gas co-rotating with one of them. We measured in each galaxy the ionized gas kinematics and metallicity, and the surface brightness, kinematics, mass surface density, and the stellar populations of the 2 stellar components to constrain the formation scenario of these peculiar galaxies. We applied a novel spectroscopic decomposition technique to both galaxies, to separate the…
We analyzed the radial surface brightness profile of the spiral galaxy NGC 7793 using HST/ACS images from the GHOSTS survey and a new HST/WFC3 image across the disk break. We used the photometry of resolved stars to select distinct populations covering a wide range of stellar ages. We found breaks in the radial profiles of all stellar populations at 280" (~5.1 kpc). Beyond this disk break, the profiles become steeper for younger populations. This same trend is seen in numerical simulations where the outer disk is formed almost entirely by radial migration. We also found that the older stars of…
A suite of vast stellar surveys mapping the Milky Way, culminating in the Gaia mission, is revolutionizing the empirical information about the distribution and properties of stars in the Galactic stellar disk. We review and lay out what analysis and modeling machinery needs to be in place to test mechanisms of disk galaxy evolution and to stringently constrain the Galactic gravitational potential, using such Galactic star-by-star measurements. We stress the crucial role of stellar survey selection functions in any such modeling; and we advocate the utility of viewing the Galactic stellar disk …
By means of N-body/SPH simulations we investigate the morphological properties of thick disks formed through minor mergers. We show that the vertical surface density profile of the post-merger thick disk follows a sech function and has an excess in the regions far from the disk mid-plane (z>2kpc). This stellar excess also follows a sech function with a larger scale height than the main thick disk component, and it is usually dominated by stars from the primary galaxy. Stars in the excess have a rotational velocity lower than that of stars in the thick disk, and they may thus be confused with s…
Warps are vertical distortions of the stellar or gaseous disks of galaxies. One of the proposed scenarios for the formation of warps involves tidal interactions among galaxies. A recent study identified a stellar warp in the outer regions of the south-western (SW) disk of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and suggested that it might have originated due to the tidal interaction between the LMC and the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). Due to the limited spatial coverage of the data, the authors could not investigate the counterpart of this warp in the north-eastern (NE) region, which is essential to…
The physics of angular momentum transport from galactic scales (~10-100 pc) to much smaller radii is one of the oustanding problems in our understanding of the formation and evolution of super-massive black holes (BHs). Seemingly unrelated observations have discovered that there is a lopsided stellar disk of unknown origin orbiting the BH in M31, and possibly many other systems. We show that these nominally independent puzzles are in fact closely related. Multi-scale simulations of gas inflow from galactic to BH scales show that when sufficient gas is driven towards a BH, gravitational instabi…
We use the Mitchell Spectrograph (formerly VIRUS-P) to observe 12 nearby disk galaxies. We successfully measure ages in the outer disk in six systems. In three cases (NGC 2684, NGC 6155, and NGC 7437), we find that a downward break in the disk surface brightness profile corresponds with a change in the dominant stellar population with the interior being dominated by active star formation and the exterior having older stellar populations that are best-fit with star formation histories that decline with time. The observed increase in average stellar ages beyond a profile break is similar to theo…
We present results of numerical modeling made for the galactic stellar and stellar-gas disk embedded in the spherical halo and bulge. The stellar disk is simulated by N-body system, the equations of hydrodynamics are solved by TVD-method. We used TREEcode-algorithm for calculation of a self-gravity in stellar and gaseous components. The possibility of bars birth in a hot stellar disk because of gravitational instability of a cold gas component is investigated. The conditions of occurrence lopsided-galaxies from a axisymmetric disk as a result of gravitational instability are explored. The self…
The Milky Way's stellar disk can tilt in response to torques that result from infalling satellite galaxies and their associated tidal debris. In this work, we explore the dynamics of disk tilting by running N-body simulations of mergers in an isolated, isotropic Milky Way-like host galaxy, varying over satellite virial mass, initial position, and orbit. We develop and validate a first-principles understanding of the dynamics that govern how the host galaxy's stellar disk responds to the satellite's dark matter debris. We find that the degree of disk tilting can be large for cosmologically-moti…
By undertaking deep long-slit spectroscopy with the focal reducer SCORPIO of the Russian 6m telescope, we studied stellar population properties and their variation with radius in 15 nearby S0 galaxies sampling a wide range of luminosities and environments. For the large-scale stellar disks of S0s, we have measured SSP-equivalent metallicities ranging from the solar one down to [Z/H]=-0.4 - -0.7, rather high magnesium-to-iron ratios, [Mg/Fe] > +0.2, and mostly old SSP-equivalent ages. Nine of 15 (60%) galaxies have large-scale stellar disks older than 10 Gyr, and among those we find all the gal…
Major mergers or/and the repeated minor mergers lead to dynamical heating of disks of galaxies. We analyze the available data on the velocity dispersion of stellar disks of S-S0 galaxies, including the new observational data obtained at 6m telescope of SAO RAS. As a measure of dynamical (over)heating, we use the ratio of the observed velocity dispersion to the minimal dispersion which provides the local stability of the stellar disks with respect to gravitational perturbations. We came to conclusion that stellar disks in a significant part of galaxies (including LSB and some S0 galaxies) are c…
The results of photometric decomposition of surface brightness distributions in 85 early-type unbarred galaxies are presented. The SDSS r-images are analysed. Double-tiered exponential disks are found in all galaxies which are studied; the statistics of the disk parameters is derived.
We estimate the masses of disks of galaxies using the marginal gravitational stability criterion and compare them with the photometrical disk mass evaluations. The comparison reveals that the stellar disks of most of spiral galaxies we considered cannot be substantially overheated (at least within several radial scalelengths) and are therefore unlikely to have experienced a significant merging event in their history. However, for substantial part of S0- type galaxies a stellar velocity dispersion is well in excess of the gravitational stability threshold suggesting a major merger event in the …
We use the marginal stability condition for galactic disks and the stellar velocity dispersion data published by different authors to place upper limits on the disk local surface density at two radial scalelengths $R=2h$. Extrapolating these estimates, we constrain the total mass of the disks and compare these estimates to those based on the photometry and color of stellar populations. The comparison reveals that the stellar disks of most of spiral galaxies in our sample cannot be substantially overheated and are therefore unlikely to have experienced a significant merging event in their histo…
Like the majority of spiral galaxies, NGC 6155 exhibits an exponential surface brightness profile that steepens significantly at large radii. Using the VIRUS-P IFU spectrograph, we have gathered spatially resolved spectra of the system. Modifying the GANDALF spectral fitting routine for use on the complex stellar populations found in spirals, we find that the average stellar ages increase significantly beyond the profile break radius. This result is in good agreement with recent simulations that predict the outskirts of disk galaxies are populated through stellar migration. With the ability to…
We have obtained and analyzed long-slit spectral data for the lenticular galaxy IC 719. In this gas-rich S0 galaxy, its large-scale gaseous disk counterrotates the global stellar disk. Moreover in the IC 719 disk we have detected a secondary stellar component corotating the ionized gas. By using emission-line intensity ratios, we have proved the gas excitation by young stars and so are claiming current star formation, most intense in a ring-like zone at the radius of 10" (1.4 kpc). The oxygen abundance of the gas in the starforming ring is about half of the solar abundance. Since the stellar d…
We provide and describe a library of diffuse stellar radiation fields in spiral galaxies derived using calculations of the transfer of stellar radiation from the main morphological components - disks, thin disks, and bulges - through the dusty interstellar medium. These radiation fields are self-consistent with the solutions for the integrated panchromatic spectral energy distributions (SEDs) previously presented using the same model. Because of this, observables calculated from the radiation fields, such as gamma-ray or radio emission, can be self-consistently combined with the solutions for …
Most, if not all, disk galaxies have a thin (classical) disk and a thick disk. In most models thick disks are thought to be a necessary consequence of the disk formation and/or evolution of the galaxy. We present the results of a study of the thick disk properties in a sample of carefully selected edge-on galaxies with types ranging from T=3 to T=8. We fitted one-dimensional luminosity profiles with physically motivated functions - the solutions of two stellar and one gaseous isothermal coupled disks in equilibrium - which are likely to yield more accurate results than other functions used in …
We present a catalog of bulge, disk, and total stellar mass estimates for ~660,000 galaxies in the Legacy area of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7. These masses are based on a homogeneous catalog of g- and r-band photometry described by Simard et al. (2011), which we extend here with bulge+disk and Sersic profile photometric decompositions in the SDSS u, i, and z bands. We discuss the methodology used to derive stellar masses from these data via fitting to broadband spectral energy distributions (SEDs), and show that the typical statistical uncertainty on total, bulge, and disk stel…
We present ionized-gas (OIII) and stellar kinematics (velocities and velocity dispersions) for 30 nearly face-on spiral galaxies out to as much as three disk scale lengths (h_R). These data have been derived from PPak IFU spectroscopy (4980-5370A), observed at a mean resolution of R=7700 (sigma_inst=17km/s). These data are a fundamental product of our survey and will be used in companion papers to, e.g., derive the detailed (baryonic+dark) mass budget of each galaxy in our sample. Our presentation provides a comprehensive description of the observing strategy, data reduction, and analysis. Alo…
A small fraction of core collapse supernovae (SNe) show evidence that the outgoing blast wave has encountered a substantial mass ~ 1-10 M_sun of circumstellar matter (CSM) at radii ~100-1000 AU, much more than can nominally be explained by pre-explosion stellar winds. In extreme cases this interaction may power the most luminous, optically-energetic SNe yet discovered. Interpretations for the origin of the CSM have thus far centered on explosive eruptions from the star just ~ years to decades prior to the core collapse. Here we consider an alternative possibility that the inferred CSM is a rel…
