Surface brightness fluctuations have been proved to be a very powerful technique to determine the distance and characterize the stellar content in extragalactic systems. Nevertheless, before facing the problem of stellar content in distant galaxies, we need to calibrate the method onto nearby well-known systems. In this paper we analyze the properties at $J$ and $K_s$ bands of a sample of 19 star clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), for which accurate near-infrared (NIR) resolved star photometry, and integrated photometry are available. For the same sample, we derive the SBF measurements in $J$ and $K_s$-bands. We use the multi-purpose stellar population code \emph{SPoT (Stellar POpulations Tools)} to simulate the color-magnitude diagram, stellar counts, integrated magnitudes, colors, and surface brightness fluctuations of each cluster. The present procedure allows us to estimate the age and metallicity of the clusters in a consistent way, and provides a new calibration of the empirical $s$-parameter. We take advantage of the high sensitivity of NIR surface brightness fluctuations to thermally pulsing asymptotic (TP-AGB) stars to test different mass-loss rates affecting the evolution of such stars. We argue that NIR-SBFs can contribute to the disentangling of the observable properties of TP-AGB stars, especially in galaxies, where a large number of these stars are present.
We present the detection of very extended stellar populations around the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) out to R~21 degrees, or ~18.5 kpc at the LMC distance of 50 kpc, as detected in the Survey of the MAgellanic Stellar History (SMASH) performed with the Dark Energy Camera on the NOAO Blanco 4m Telescope. The deep (g~24) SMASH color magnitude diagrams (CMDs) clearly reveal old (~9 Gyr), metal-poor ([Fe/H]=-0.8 dex) main-sequence stars at a distance of 50 kpc. The surface brightness of these detections is extremely low with our most distant detection having 34 mag per arcsec squared in g-band. T…
We observed five giant molecular clouds (GMCs) in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) in the 12CO J=1-0 line using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). The sample includes four GMCs with some signs of star formation -- either YSOs, H II regions, and/or young clusters -- and one quiescent GMC without any sign of massive star formation. The data from the ALMA 12 m, 7 m, and Total-Power arrays are jointly deconvolved to obtain high-fidelity images at high spatial resolution (3 arcsec = 0.7 pc). The four star-forming GMCs show very complex structures with clumps and filaments. The…
We have derived high-spatial-resolution metallicity maps covering $\sim$105~deg$^2$ across the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) using near-infrared passbands from the VISTA Survey of the Magellanic Clouds. We attempt to understand the metallicity distribution and gradients of the LMC up to a radius of $\sim$ 6~kpc. We identify red giant branch (RGB) stars in spatially distinct $Y, (Y-K_{\rm s})$ colour-magnitude diagrams. In any of our selected subregions, the RGB slope is used as an indicator of the average metallicity, based on calibration to metallicity using spectroscopic data. The mean LMC me…
We provide a homogeneous set of structural parameters of 83 star clusters located at the periphery of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) and the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). The clusters' stellar density and surface brightness profiles were built from deep, AO assisted optical images, and uniform analysis techniques. The structural parameters were obtained from King and Elson et al. model fittings. Integrated magnitudes and masses (for a subsample) are also provided. The sample contains mostly low surface brightness clusters with distances between 4.5 and 6.5 kpc and between 1 and 6.5 kpc from …
We present results from the Large Magellanic Cloud Near-infrared Synoptic Survey (LMCNISS) for classical and type II Cepheid variables that were identified by the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE-III) catalogue. Multiwavelength time-series data for classical Cepheid variables are used to study light-curve structures as a function of period and wavelength. We exploit a sample of $\sim$1400 classical and $\sim$80 type II Cepheid variables to derive Period--Wesenheit relations that combine both optical and near-infrared data. The new Period--Luminosity and Wesenheit relations are us…
We present a dust extinction AV map of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) in the H I ridge region using the IRSF near-infrared (IR) data, and compare the AV map with the total hydrogen column density N(H) maps derived from the CO and H I observations. In the LMC H I ridge region, the two-velocity H I components (plus an intermediate velocity component) are identified, and the young massive star cluster is possibly formed by collision between them. In addition, one of the components is suggested to be an inflow gas from the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) which is expected to have even lower metalli…
We confirm the existence of a second Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) star cluster, KMHK 1592, with an age that falls in the middle of the so-called LMC star cluster age gap, a long period of time (~ 4 - 11 Gyr) where no star cluster had been uncovered, except ESO121-SC03. The age (8.0+-0.5 Gyr) and the metallicity ([Fe/H]=-1.0+-0.2 dex) of KMHK1592 were derived from the fit of theoretical isochrones to the intrinsic star cluster colour-magnitude diagram sequences, which were unveiled using a robust star-by-star membership probability procedure. Because of the relative low brightness of the star c…
We present for the first time extended stellar density and/or surface brightness radial profiles for almost all the known Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) old globular clusters (GCs). These were built from DECam images and reach out to ~ 4 times the GCs' tidal radii. The background subtracted radial profiles reveal that the GCs located closer than ~ 5 kpc from the LMC centre contain an excess of stars in their outermost regions with respect to the stellar density expected from a King profile. Such a residual amount of stars - not seen in GCs located farther than ~ 5 kpc from the LMC centre-, as we…
We present the results of the light curve model fitting technique applied to optical and near-infrared photometric data for a sample of 18 Classical Cepheids (11 fundamentals and 7 first overtones) in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). We use optical photometry from the OGLE III database and near--infrared photometry obtained by the European Southern bservatory public survey "VISTA near--infrared survey of the Magellanic Clouds system". Iso--periodic nonlinear convective model sequences have been computed for each selected Cepheid in order to reproduce the multi--filter light curve amplitudes a…
We use astrometry and broad-band photometry from Data Release 2 of the ESA's Gaia mission to map out low surface-brightness features in the stellar density distribution around the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds. The LMC appears to have grown two thin and long stellar streams in its Northern and Southern regions, highly reminiscent of spiral arms. We use computer simulations of the Magellanic Clouds' in-fall to demonstrate that these arms were likely pulled out of the LMC's disc due to the combined influence of the SMC's most recent fly-by and the tidal field of the Milky Way.
We present results from an analysis of $\sim$ 29,000 RR Lyrae stars located in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). For these objects, near-infrared time-series photometry from the VISTA survey of the Magellanic Clouds system (VMC) and optical data from the OGLE (Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment) IV survey and the Gaia Data Release 2 catalogue of confirmed RR Lyrae stars were exploited. Using VMC and OGLE IV magnitudes we derived period-luminosity (PL), period-luminosity-metallicity (PLZ), period-Wesenheit (PW) and period-Wesenheit-metallicity (PWZ) relations in all available bands. More …
We use a new panoramic imaging survey, conducted with the Dark Energy Camera, to map the stellar fringes of the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds to extremely low surface brightness V $\gtrsim$ 32 mag arcsec$^{-2}$. Our results starkly illustrate the closely interacting nature of the LMC-SMC pair. We show that the outer LMC disk is strongly distorted, exhibiting an irregular shape, evidence for warping, and significant truncation on the side facing the SMC. Large diffuse stellar substructures are present both to the north and south of the LMC, and in the inter-Cloud region. At least one of the…
The survey description and near-infrared properties for 92 galaxies are presented for the Extended Disc Galaxy Exploration Science (EDGES) Survey, along with an investigation into the properties of the stellar halos of these galaxies. EDGES is a Spitzer Space Telescope Warm Mission program designed to reach the surface brightness limit ($\sim$0.5 kJy sr$^{-1}$ or 29 AB mag arcsec$^{-2}$) of the Infrared Array Camera (IRAC) 3.6 and 4.5 $μ$m bands for a wide range of galaxy types found within the local volume. The surface brightness profiles exhibit a large range in disc scalelength, with breaks…
We present time-series photometry of 21 nearby Type II Cepheids in the near-infrared J, H and Ks passbands. We use this photometry, together with the Third Gaia Early Data Release parallaxes, to determine for the first time period-luminosity relations (PLRs) for Type II Cepheids from field representatives of these old pulsating stars in the near-infrared regime. We found PLRs to be very narrow for BL Herculis stars, which makes them candidates for precision distance indicators. We then use archival photometry and the most accurate distance obtained from eclipsing binaries to recalibrate PLRs f…
We present a new empirical \(JHK\) absolute calibration of the tip of the red giant branch (TRGB) in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). We use published data from the extensive \emph{Near-Infrared Synoptic Survey} containing 3.5 million stars, of which 65,000 are red giants that fall within one magnitude of the TRGB. Adopting the TRGB slopes from a companion study of the isolated dwarf galaxy IC\,1613 as well as an LMC distance modulus of \(μ_0 = \)~18.49~mag from (geometric) detached eclipsing binaries, we derive absolute \(JHK\) zero-points for the near-infrared TRGB. For comparison with meas…
Surface brightness-colour relations (SBCRs) are largely used for general studies in stellar astrophysics and for determining extragalactic distances. Based on simulated spectra of late-type stars using MARCS model atmospheres, our aim is to analyse the effect of stellar fundamental parameters on the surface brightness. We also compare theoretical and recent empirical SBCRs. We used MARCS model atmospheres to compute spectra and the surface brightness of stars. We first explored the parameter space of MARCS (i.e. effective temperature, $\log g$, $\mathrm{[Fe/H]}$, microturbulence, and mass) in …
We investigate infrared properties of asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars in our Galaxy and the Magellanic Clouds using various infrared observational data and theoretical models. We use catalogs for the sample of 4996 AGB stars in our Galaxy and about 39,000 AGB stars in the Magellanic Clouds from the available literature. For each object in the sample, we cross-identify the 2MASS, WISE, and Spitzer counterparts. To compare the physical properties of O-rich and C-rich AGB stars in our Galaxy and the Magellanic Clouds, we present IR two color diagrams (2CDs) using various photometric data. We …
A very long term near-infrared variable star survey towards the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds was carried out using the 1.4m InfraRed Survey Facility at the South African Astronomical Observatory. This project was initiated in December 2000 in the LMC, and in July 2001 in the SMC. Since then an area of 3 square degrees along the bar in the LMC and an area of 1 square degree in the central part of the SMC have been repeatedly observed. This survey is ongoing, but results obtained with data taken until December 2017 are reported in this paper. Over more than 15 years we have observed the two…
We analysed 30 RR Lyrae stars (RRLs) located in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) globular cluster Reticulum that were observed in the 3.6 and 4.5 $μ$m passbands with the Infrared Array Camera (IRAC) on board of the Spitzer Space Telescope. We derived new mid-infrared (MIR) period-luminosity PL relations. The zero points of the PL relations were estimated using the trigonometric parallaxes of five bright Milky Way (MW) RRLs measured with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and, as an alternative, we used the trigonometric parallaxes published in the first Gaia data release (DR1) which were obtaine…
New determinations are presented of the cosmic infrared background monopole brightness in the Planck HFI bands from 100 GHz to 857 GHz. Planck was not designed to measure the monopole component of sky brightness, so cross-correlation of the 2015 HFI maps with COBE/FIRAS data is used to recalibrate the zero level of the HFI maps. For the HFI 545 and 857 GHz maps, the brightness scale is also recalibrated. Correlation of the recalibrated HFI maps with a linear combination of Galactic H I and H alpha data is used to separate the Galactic foreground emission and determine the cosmic infrared backg…
