In the paper, we prove that in an arbitrary Delone set $X$ in $3D$ space, the subset $X_6$ of all points from $X$ at which local groups have axes of the order not greater than 6 is also a Delone set. Here, under the local group at point $x\in X$ is meant the symmetry group $S_x(2R)$ of the cluster $C_x(2R)$ of $x$ with radius $2R$, where $R$ (according to Delone's theory of the 'empty sphere') is the radius of the largest 'empty' ball, that is, the largest ball free of points of $X$.
The main result seems to be the first rigorously proved statement on absolutely generic Delone sets which implies substantial statements for Delone sets with strong crystallographic restrictions. For instance, an important observation of Shtogrin on the boundedness of local groups in Delone sets with equivalent $2R$-clusters immediately follows from the main theorem.
In the paper, the 'crystalline kernel conjecture' (Conjecture 1) and its two weaker versions (Conjectures 2 and 3) are suggested. According to Conjecture 1, in a quite arbitrary Delone set, points with locally crystallographic axes (of order 2,3,4, or 6) only inevitably constitute an essential part of the set. These conjectures significantly generalize the famous statement of Crystallography on the impossibility of (global) 5-fold symmetry in a 3D lattice.
Linearly repetitive Delone sets are shown to be rectifiable by a bi-Lipschitz homeomorphisms of the Euclidean space that sends the Delone set to the set of points with integer coordinates.
In the paper we present a proof of the local criterion for crystalline structures which generalizes the local criterion for regular systems. A Delone set is called a crystal if it is invariant with respect to a crystallgraphic group. So-called locally antipodal Delone sets, i.e. such sets in which all 2R-clusters are centrally symmetrical, are considered. It turns out that the local antipodal sets have crystalline structure. Moreover, if in a locally antipodal set all 2R-clusters are the same the set is a regular system, i.e. a Delone set whose symmetry group operates transitively on the set.
We complete the proof of the upper bound $\hatρ_3\leq 10R$ for the regularity radius of Delone sets in three-dimensional Euclidean space. Namely, summing up the results obtained earlier, and adding the missing cases, we show that if all $10R$-clusters of a Delone set $X$ with parameters $(r,R)$ are equivalent, then $X$ is a regular system.
We address the problem of determining finite subsets of Delone sets $\varLambda\subset\R^d$ with long-range order by $X$-rays in prescribed $\varLambda$-directions, i.e., directions parallel to non-zero interpoint vectors of $\varLambda$. Here, an $X$-ray in direction $u$ of a finite set gives the number of points in the set on each line parallel to $u$. For our main result, we introduce the notion of algebraic Delone sets $\varLambda\subset\R^2$ and derive a sufficient condition for the determination of the convex subsets of these sets by $X$-rays in four prescribed $\varLambda$-directions.
The local theory of regular or multi-regular systems aims at finding sufficient local conditions for a Delone set $X$ to be a regular or multi-regular system. One of the main goals is to estimate the regularity radius $\hatρ_d$ for Delone sets $X$ in terms of the radius $R$ of the largest "empty ball" for $X$. The present paper establishes the lower bound $\hat{ρ_d}\geq 2dR$ for all $d$, which is linear in $d$. The best previously known lower bound had been $\hatρ_d\geq 4R$ for $d\geq 2$. The proof of the new lower bound is accomplished through explicit constructions of Delone sets with mutual…
We extend a discrepancy bound of Lagarias and Pleasants for local weight distributions on linearly repetitive Delone sets and show that a similar bound holds also for the more general case of Delone sets without finite local complexity if linear repetitivity is replaced by $\varepsilon$-linear repetitivity. As a result we establish that Delone sets that are $\varepsilon$-linear repetitive for some sufficiently small $\varepsilon$ are rectifiable, and that incommensurable multiscale substitution tilings are never almost linearly repetitive.
We consider algebraic Delone sets $\varLambda$ in the Euclidean plane and address the problem of distinguishing convex subsets of $\varLambda$ by X-rays in prescribed $\varLambda$-directions, i.e., directions parallel to nonzero interpoint vectors of $\varLambda$. Here, an X-ray in direction $u$ of a finite set gives the number of points in the set on each line parallel to $u$. It is shown that for any algebraic Delone set $\varLambda$ there are four prescribed $\varLambda$-directions such that any two convex subsets of $\varLambda$ can be distinguished by the corresponding X-rays. We further …
Non-periodic systems have become more important in recent years, both theoretically and practically. Their description via Delone sets requires the extension of many standard concepts of crystallography. Here, we summarise some useful notions of symmetry and aperiodicity, with special focus on the concept of the hull of a Delone set. Our aim is to contribute to a more systematic and consistent use of the different notions.
The local theory for regular and multi-regular systems was developed in the assumption that these systems are Delone sets, or (r;R)-systems. The requirement for a set to be a (r;R)-system particularly implies that any two points in a Delone set can be connected by a sequence of points from the set with sequel interpoint distances bounded by 2R. In the terminology we adopted in this paper, it means that a Delone set is a 2R-bonded set. Meanwhile, there are crystals, e.g. zeolites, whose atomic structure is multi-regular microporous point set. In these structures there are cavities that are rela…
We prove that in every compact space of Delone sets in $\mathbb{R}^d$ which is minimal with respect to the action by translations, either all Delone sets are uniformly spread, or continuously many distinct bounded displacement equivalence classes are represented, none of which contains a lattice. The implied limits are taken with respect to the Chabauty--Fell topology, which is the natural topology on the space of closed subsets of $\mathbb{R}^d$. This topology coincides with the standard local topology in the finite local complexity setting, and it follows that the dichotomy holds for all min…
The paper establishes an equivalence between pure point diffraction and certain types of model sets, called inter model sets, in the context of substitution point sets and substitution tilings. The key ingredients are a new type of coincidence condition in substitution point sets, which we call algebraic coincidence, and the use of a recent characterization of model sets through dynamical systems associated with the point sets or tilings.
Given a lattice $Γ\subset SOL$, we show that there is a coarsely dense subset $\mathcal{D} \subset Γ$ that is not biLipschitz equivalent to $Γ$. We also prove similar results for lattices in certain higher rank abelian-by-abelian groups and for the solvable Baumslag-Solitar groups.
Delone sets are locally finite point sets, such that (a) any two points are separated by a given minimum distance, and (b) there is a given radius so that every ball of that radius contains at least one point. Important examples include the vertex set of Penrose tilings and other regular model sets, which serve as a mathematical model for quasicrystals. In this note we show that the point set given by the values $\sqrt{n} e^{2πi α\sqrt{n}}$ with $n=1,2,3,\ldots$ is a Delone set in the complex plane, for any $α>0$. This complements Akiyama's recent observation (see arXiv:1904.10815) that $\sqrt…
Two Delone sets are bounded distance equivalent to each other if there is a bijection between them such that the distance of corresponding points is uniformly bounded. Bounded distance equivalence is an equivalence relation. We show that the hull of a repetitive Delone set with finite local complexity has either one equivalence class or uncountably many. A very similar result is proven in arXiv:2011.00106 [math.MG].
With a view to establishing measure theoretic approximation properties of Delone sets, we study a setup which arises naturally in the problem of averaging almost periodic functions along exponential sequences. In this setting, we establish a full converse of the Borel-Cantelli lemma. This provides an analogue of more classical problems in the metric theory of Diophantine approximation, but with the distance to the nearest integer function replaced by distance to an arbitrary Delone set.
This paper characterizes when a Delone set X is an ideal crystal in terms of restrictions on the number of its local patches of a given size or on the hetereogeneity of their distribution. Let N(T) count the number of translation-inequivalent patches of radius T in X and let M(T) be the minimum radius such that every closed ball of radius M(T) contains the center of a patch of every one of these kinds. We show that for each of these functions there is a `gap in the spectrum' of possible growth rates between being bounded and having linear growth, and that having linear growth is equivalent to …
This paper addresses the problem of describing aperiodic discrete structures that have a self-similar or self-affine structure. Substitution Delone set families are families of Delone sets (X_1, ..., X_n) in R^d that satisfy an inflation functional equation under the action of an expanding integer matrix in R^d. This paper studies such functional equation in which each X_i is a discrete multiset (a set whose elements are counted with a finite multiplicity). It gives necessary conditions on the coefficients of the functional equation for discrete solutions to exist. It treats the case where the…
In this paper we prove that, for any integer $d>0$, every linearly repetitive Delone set in the Euclidean $d$-space $\RR^d$ is equivalent, up to a bi-Lipschitz homeomorphism, to the integer lattice $\ZZ^d$. In the particular case when the Delone set $X$ in $\RR^d$ comes from a primitive substitution tiling of $\RR^d$, we give a condition on the eigenvalues of the substitution matrix which implies the existence of a homeomorphism with bounded displacement from $X$ to the lattice lattice $λ\ZZ^d$ for some positive $λ$. This condition includes primitive Pisot substitution tilings but also concern…
We construct examples of Delone sets of the plane (that is, discrete subsets that are uniformly separated and coarsely dense) that are repetitive (each patch of the set appears in every large-enough ball) though non-rectifiable (i.e. non bi-Lipschitz equivalent to the standard lattice). More generally, we construct such a set so that the translation action on the closure of its orbit has any prescribed Choquet simplex as its set of invariant probability measures (in particular, we provide uniquely ergodic examples). The construction relies on classical examples of Burago-Kleiner and McMullen, …
We define a general framework that includes objects such as tilings, Delone sets, functions and measures. We define local derivability and mutual local derivability (MLD) between any two of these objects in order to describe their interrelation. This is a generalization of the local derivability and MLD (or S-MLD) for tilings and Delone sets which are used in the literature, under a mild assumption. We show that several canonical maps in aperiodic order send an object P to one that is MLD with P. Moreover we show that, for an object P and a class S of objects, a mild condition on them assures …
In the study of aperiodic order and mathematical models of quasicrystals, questions regarding equivalence relations on Delone sets naturally arise. This work is dedicated to the bounded displacement (BD) equivalence relation, and especially to results concerning instances of non-equivalence. We present a general condition for two Delone sets to be BD non-equivalent, and apply our result to Delone sets associated with tilings of Euclidean space. First we consider substitution tilings, and exhibit a substitution matrix associated with two distinct substitution rules. The first rule generates onl…
We show that the Leech lattice gives a sphere covering which is locally least dense among lattice coverings. We show that a similar result is false for the root lattice E8. For this we construct a less dense covering lattice whose Delone subdivision has a common refinement with the Delone subdivision of E8. The new lattice yields a sphere covering which is more than 12% less dense than the formerly best known given by the lattice A8*. Currently, the Leech lattice is the first and only known example of a locally optimal lattice covering having a non-simplicial Delone subdivision. We hereby in p…
There is a growing body of results in the theory of discrete point sets and tiling systems giving conditions under which such systems are pure point diffractive. Here we look at the opposite direction: what can we infer about a discrete point set or tiling, defined through a primitive substitution system, given that it is pure point diffractive? Our basic objects are Delone multisets and tilings, which are self-replicating under a primitive substitution system of affine mappings with a common expansive map $Q$. Our first result gives a partial answer to a question of Lagarias and Wang: we char…
We prove that the set of visible points of any lattice of dimension at least 2 has pure point diffraction spectrum, and we determine the diffraction spectrum explicitly. This settles previous speculation on the exact nature of the diffraction in this situation, see math-ph/9903046 and references therein. Using similar methods we show the same result for the 1-dimensional set of k-th power free integers with k at least 2. Of special interest is the fact that neither of these sets is a Delone set --- each has holes of unbounded inradius. We provide a careful formulation of the mathematical ideas…
Discrete point sets $\mathcal{S}$ such as lattices or quasiperiodic Delone sets may permit, beyond their symmetries, certain isometries $R$ such that $\mathcal{S}\cap R\mathcal{S}$ is a subset of $\mathcal{S}$ of finite density. These are the so-called coincidence isometrie. They are important in understanding and classifying grain boundaries and twins in crystals and quasicrystals. It is the purpose of this contribution to introduce the corresponding coincidence problem in a mathematical setting and to demonstrate how it can be solved algebraically in dimensions 2, 3 and 4. Various examples b…
We show that, in a generic setting, self-affine and almost self-affine measures are exact dimensional, with local dimension equal almost everywhere to the information dimension and given by the zero of a superadditive pressure functional.
Monotone sets have been introduced about ten years ago by Cheeger and Kleiner who reduced the proof of the non biLipschitz embeddability of the Heisenberg group into $L^1$ to the classification of its monotone subsets. Later on, monotone sets played an important role in several works related to geometric measure theory issues in the Heisenberg setting. In this paper, we work in an arbitrary Carnot group and show that its monotone subsets are sets with locally finite perimeter that are local minimizers for the perimeter. Under an additional condition on the ambient Carnot group, we prove that t…
We investigate the interplay between the local and asymptotic geometry of a set $A \subseteq \mathbb{R}^n$ and the geometry of model sets $\mathcal{S} \subset \mathcal{P}(\mathbb{R}^n)$, which approximate $A$ locally uniformly on small scales. The framework for local set approximation developed in this paper unifies and extends ideas of Jones, Mattila and Vuorinen, Reifenberg, and Preiss. We indicate several applications of this framework to variational problems that arise in geometric measure theory and partial differential equations. For instance, we show that the singular part of the suppor…
Strongly convex sets in Hilbert spaces are characterized by local properties. One quantity which is used for this purpose is a generalization of the modulus of convexity δ_Ωof a set Ω. We also show that \lim_{ε\to 0} δ_Ω(ε)/ε^2 exists whenever Ωis closed and convex.
