Automatic brain tumor segmentation from multi-modality Magnetic Resonance Images (MRI) using deep learning methods plays an important role in assisting the diagnosis and treatment of brain tumor. However, previous methods mostly ignore the latent relationship among different modalities. In this work, we propose a novel end-to-end Modality-Pairing learning method for brain tumor segmentation. Paralleled branches are designed to exploit different modality features and a series of layer connections are utilized to capture complex relationships and abundant information among modalities. We also use a consistency loss to minimize the prediction variance between two branches. Besides, learning rate warmup strategy is adopted to solve the problem of the training instability and early over-fitting. Lastly, we use average ensemble of multiple models and some post-processing techniques to get final results. Our method is tested on the BraTS 2020 online testing dataset, obtaining promising segmentation performance, with average dice scores of 0.891, 0.842, 0.816 for the whole tumor, tumor core and enhancing tumor, respectively. We won the second place of the BraTS 2020 Challenge for the tumor segmentation task.

Recent advances in machine learning and prevalence of digital medical images have opened up an opportunity to address the challenging brain tumor segmentation (BTS) task by using deep convolutional neural networks. However, different from the RGB image data that are very widespread, the medical image data used in brain tumor segmentation are relatively scarce in terms of the data scale but contain the richer information in terms of the modality property. To this end, this paper proposes a novel cross-modality deep feature learning framework to segment brain tumors from the multi-modality MRI d…

Multi-modal magnetic resonance (MR) imaging provides great potential for diagnosing and analyzing brain gliomas. In clinical scenarios, common MR sequences such as T1, T2 and FLAIR can be obtained simultaneously in a single scanning process. However, acquiring contrast enhanced modalities such as T1ce requires additional time, cost, and injection of contrast agent. As such, it is clinically meaningful to develop a method to synthesize unavailable modalities which can also be used as additional inputs to downstream tasks (e.g., brain tumor segmentation) for performance enhancing. In this work, …
Magnetic Resonance (MR) images of different modalities can provide complementary information for clinical diagnosis, but whole modalities are often costly to access. Most existing methods only focus on synthesizing missing images between two modalities, which limits their robustness and efficiency when multiple modalities are missing. To address this problem, we propose a multi-modality generative adversarial network (MGAN) to synthesize three high-quality MR modalities (FLAIR, T1 and T1ce) from one MR modality T2 simultaneously. The experimental results show that the quality of the synthesize…

Multi-modal MR imaging is routinely used in clinical practice to diagnose and investigate brain tumors by providing rich complementary information. Previous multi-modal MRI segmentation methods usually perform modal fusion by concatenating multi-modal MRIs at an early/middle stage of the network, which hardly explores non-linear dependencies between modalities. In this work, we propose a novel Nested Modality-Aware Transformer (NestedFormer) to explicitly explore the intra-modality and inter-modality relationships of multi-modal MRIs for brain tumor segmentation. Built on the transformer-based…

Simultaneous segmentation and detection of liver tumors (hemangioma and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC)) by using multi-modality non-contrast magnetic resonance imaging (NCMRI) are crucial for the clinical diagnosis. However, it is still a challenging task due to: (1) the HCC information on NCMRI is invisible or insufficient makes extraction of liver tumors feature difficult; (2) diverse imaging characteristics in multi-modality NCMRI causes feature fusion and selection difficult; (3) no specific information between hemangioma and HCC on NCMRI cause liver tumors detection difficult. Brain tumor segmentation (BTS) in magnetic resonance image (MRI) is crucial for brain tumor diagnosis, cancer management and research purposes. With the great success of the ten-year BraTS challenges as well as the advances of CNN and Transformer algorithms, a lot of outstanding BTS models have been proposed to tackle the difficulties of BTS in different technical aspects. However, existing studies hardly consider how to fuse the multi-modality images in a reasonable manner. Accurate brain tumor segmentation from Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is desirable to joint learning of multimodal images. However, in clinical practice, it is not always possible to acquire a complete set of MRIs, and the problem of missing modalities causes severe performance degradation in existing multimodal segmentation methods. In this work, we present the first attempt to exploit the Transformer for multimodal brain tumor segmentation that is robust to any combinatorial subset of available modalities. Concretely, we propose a novel multimodal Medical Transformer (mmFormer) for incompl…

Using multimodal Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is necessary for accurate brain tumor segmentation. The main problem is that not all types of MRIs are always available in clinical exams. Based on the fact that there is a strong correlation between MR modalities of the same patient, in this work, we propose a novel brain tumor segmentation network in the case of missing one or more modalities. The proposed network consists of three sub-networks: a feature-enhanced generator, a correlation constraint block and a segmentation network. The feature-enhanced generator utilizes the available modali…

Lung tumors, especially those located close to or surrounded by soft tissues like the mediastinum, are difficult to segment due to the low soft tissue contrast on computed tomography images. Magnetic resonance images contain superior soft-tissue contrast information that can be leveraged if both modalities were available for training. Therefore, we developed a cross-modality educed learning approach where MR information that is educed from CT is used to hallucinate MRI and improve CT segmentation. Our approach, called cross-modality educed deep learning segmentation (CMEDL) combines CT and pse…

Tumor segmentation in multimodal medical images has seen a growing trend towards deep learning based methods. Typically, studies dealing with this topic fuse multimodal image data to improve the tumor segmentation contour for a single imaging modality. However, they do not take into account that tumor characteristics are emphasized differently by each modality, which affects the tumor delineation. Thus, the tumor segmentation is modality- and task-dependent. This is especially the case for soft tissue sarcomas, where, due to necrotic tumor tissue, the segmentation differs vastly. Closing this …

Early and accurate prediction of overall survival (OS) time can help to obtain better treatment planning for brain tumor patients. Although many OS time prediction methods have been developed and obtain promising results, there are still several issues. First, conventional prediction methods rely on radiomic features at the local lesion area of a magnetic resonance (MR) volume, which may not represent the full image or model complex tumor patterns. Second, different types of scanners (i.e., multi-modal data) are sensitive to different brain regions, which makes it challenging to effectively ex…
